sikkim-trekking-2

The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of India's most spectacular hikes. With awe-inspiring views of the world's highest peaks, this hike is definitely one for your bucket list!

Singalila Ridge Trek

The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of the most spectacular  treks in India  and follows the northern ridge that separates the vast country from that of its smaller neighbor -  Nepal .

As you ascend up onto the ridge itself you're greeted with some of the most impressive vistas on earth. The high  Himalaya region stretches out in front of you as you gaze across at the world's five tallest mountains including Everest , Lhotse, Makalu and Kachenjunga.

Not only do you experience incredible views, you're also greeted with a wide array of flora and fauna along the trek. You'll hike up through mountain forests, past lovely areas of bamboo, camp among rhododendrons and hike high into mountain scrubland zones. Look out for the rare red panda and keep a sharp eye out for bears, boar and barking deer. If you're lucky you might spot some of the colorful pheasants along the route.

On the hike, you'll pass hamlets, teahouses and military check points as you will sometimes be trekking on the Nepalese side of the ridge. The trail is well defined and the trek can either be done with an operator or with a single guide - depending on your experience levels.

Please Note: The trek is moderately difficult due to the high altitude of the ridge which is constantly above 3,000 meters. The ascent to the ridge can be strenuous and we suggest having a good level of stamina to complete this trek. Accommodation is generally camping and the nights get very cold.

Regional Map

The Singalila Ridge is located on the north-south mountain ridge running from northwestern West Bengal through the region of Sikkim in the Indian part of the Himalayas.

Please see map below for details.

Day 3: Trek from Sandakphu to Phalut via Sabargram

Trek Distance : 21 km | Trek Duration : 7.8 hours | Altitude Descend : 3,636Mt to 3,600 Mt

Like the previous day, we recommend waking up for the surreal sunrise over the Himalayas. We climb up a little bit to a perfect viewpoint. Today’s view is even more fabulous than the previous, simply because the panorama is so vast. Head back down for breakfast and resume trekking towards Phalut to continue the circuit. It’s already been an awesome trek and there is more to come! After about 4 hours, we come across a stone house on top of a ridge. Near here is Phalut trekker’s hut, where we stay for the night. Because of the remoteness of this area, there are no guest houses or homestays. Anyways, the place has an amazing view!

  • Trekker Hut

Day 4: Trek from Phalut to Gorkhey

Trek Distance : 14 km | Trek Duration : 7 hours | Altitude Descend : 3,600 Mt to 2,346 Mt

Stepping out of the hut as the sun rises, you are reminded of what a gorgeous place we are in. The valley below us is filled with clouds, while the mountain peaks shine in the distance. Upon leaving last night’s “campsite,” we temporarily say goodbye to the awesome views of Kanchenjunga and the eastern Himalaya. Head down through lush rhododendron and magnolia forests, finding peace with the singing birds. Eventually, we reach Gorkhey and stay at a pleasant, family-owned guest house.

Day 5: Trek from Gokhey to Timburey via Ramam

Trek Distance : 15 km | Trek Duration : 7 hours | Altitude Descend : 2,346 Mt to 1,996 Mt

After breakfast, begin today’s journey. We hike through a village called Samandin and and after about 5 hours, we reach Ramam. Here, the trail reaches a junction of two streams called Gorkhey Khola – a sight so perfect, it could be on a postcard. Keep going to Timburey, where we stay at Saumbu Homestay, run by a local Tamang family. During dinner, learn about the culture and lifestyle of locals while cooking food with them – a valuable experience!

Day 6: Trek from Timburey to Srikhola and Drive back to Darjeeling

Trek Distance : 3 km | Trek Duration: 1 hour Drive Distance : 85 km | Drive Duration: 4 hours | Drop off point Ashmita trekkers: Darjeeling.

The last day will help you traverse through Srikhola, another exotic destination. Srikhola nestles amidst wild growths of magnolia, chestnuts, oaks, pines, and birches. A river runs through the place making it cooler and more vibrant than usual. Seep in the extraordinary scenery and mesmerizing view of the landscapes. Customer Reviews

Sarah anin, united states - january 22, 2024.

We had a wonderful trip with Ashmita Trek and Tours and enjoyed our time with Rupesh Dá! Rupesh was extremely helpful and friendly during our 6 day trek in Singalila national park. We had marvellous views on ‘the sleeping buddha’ at sunrise. Food was very tasty and the communication with the company to arrange the trek according to our wishes. Highly recommended!

Dave Powell, United Kingdom - January 10, 2024

I have been lucky enough to trek in South America, Europe and North Africa and this was up there with the best! Ashmita Trek And Tours is an excellent company. From my first contact with them they communicated promptly and clearly and everything was very well organised. my guide Mr,Tenzi was amazing in every way. he is a great professional, friendly, safety orientated and shared his knowledge of the mountains and culture which enriched the whole experience. I was stretched but had an amazing time. The views of the high mountains were a highlight as was sunrise at dawn on Singalila Ridge.

Avinash Collis, India - January 01, 2024

We did the 6 day Sandakphu - Singalila Ridge Trek with Ashmita Trek and Tours guide Pemba Sherpa and had an incredible experience! Pemba was the best guide we could have asked for. Everything (accomodation, food, itinerary) was perfectly organized. Highly recommended!

Odyssey, United Kingdom - December 26, 2023

We had a lovely 6 day of trekking to Singalila Ridge Sandakphu, the scenery was breathtaking with changing landscapes. It was a cool experience trekking along the borders of India and Nepal. The trekking is a fair distance (~15km) but relatively manageable, as it’s mostly on flat terrain with a few inclines. Needs some getting adjusted to the low altitude though. Rupesh, our guide, was amazing the whole time. He made sure the whole experience was smooth (from pick up to navigating trails to meals), and was so knowledgeable that we could ask him any questions about nature and culture. Thank you Rupesh for giving us this unforgettable experience!

Jitendra Chandnani, India - December 21, 2023

Sandakphu trek was a last minute trek for me. Ashmita Trek and Tours  organised a very well laid out plan and route given the fact,I had only four days to do the trek. On the dot punctuality is the hall mark of this trek and tours including the Trek Guide. Sangay Bhutia was my trek guide for the duration and without mincing any words will say he was nothing but Superlative. Sangay is a hidden gem and an asset for Ashmita Trek and Tours. I will strongly recommend this company and more over Sangay our trek guide. He has a vast knowledge of Flora and Fauna and is a trained mountaineer. One feels safe with him as he closely keeps a watch of his trekkers health at every stage. He is extremely polite, courteous and goes out of the way to assist. He has inculcated the spirit of high mountain treks in me. I shall most certainly come back for the Goechala trek too. Thank you Ashmita treks and also many thanks to my Trek guide who is also my personal friend Sangay Bhutia!!!!

Welcome to a definitive trek in Darjeeling -  Singalila Ridge Trek ! Only two hours from the city, the great way starts. Although not a far drive from the city, the path appears as though it is in no place, as you navigate from edge to edge. The beautiful Singalila Ridge interfaces the excellent Himalaya of Nepal to India. The feature of the trek is strolling this edge to Sandakphu (11,929 feet), the most noteworthy point in West Bengal, where you get stunning perspectives on the most elevated tops on earth.

Ascend from your tranquil sleep at Sandakphu and make a short movie to a perspective. From here, see Mount Everest (29,028 ft), Kanchenjunga (28,170 ft), Lhotse (27,940 ft), and Makalu (27,825 ft) in the entirety of their magnificence. It is truly outstanding, if not the best mountain in India. What another place would you be able to see 4 of the 5 most noteworthy tops on the planet in one clearing view?

Singalila National Park is one of India's best trekking regions. The scene, natural life, individuals, and each other piece of the experience make Singalila special and adorable. The path starts from Manebhanjan on the edges of Singalila National Park. Climb over and around the verdant, forested slopes before showing up at the desolate glades of Tumling and Kalapokhri. The mountains give a genuine feeling of point of view and we feel lowered just to be in their quality. Take a few minutes to simply respect them and take some photographs, however, photographs can't do this view equity.

The wonder doesn't stop. From Sandakphu to Phalut, the mountains stay with us. Indeed, the view from Phalut is about as entrancing as the day preceding. The fruitless open zone offers a route to an uncovered perspective of the lofty snow-topped pinnacles. In Phalut, we remain in a trekker's cabin, eye to eye with the terrific Himalayas. From Phalut, we trek through the beautiful view of Gorkhey and Timburey before recovering a ride to Darjeeling. In Darjeeling, we take you on a marvellous day voyage through the city's social attractions and top it off with a delightful supper.

Consistently on the trek (aside from at Phalut), we remain in teahouses possessed by neighbourhood families. This is one of the most important pieces of the trek. Find out about the way of life and individual families that run the cabins. At the homestay in Timburey, figure out how to make momos and other conventional neighbourhood top choices!

Best Time to Visit

The best seasons for this trek are Summer (April to June) and Autumn(October to November) when the climate conditions are moderately milder. The climate is charming, with moderate temperatures. During the favoured season, the climate gives the best for the trek; the climate stays moderate, and you can get the best out of the trek. The mountain scenes are without a doubt: staggering. The blossoming backwoods and shocking scene along the path are no less mysterious during the favoured season.

This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatize successfully. We will send you the information in your mailbox about Acute Mountain Sickness and trekking in high altitudes. On this trip, we carry bottled oxygen for use in emergencies.

11. Guidance on Tipping : Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you for good service. Normally the guide and any other trek staff are given their tips at the end of the trek and this is best done as a group. The main guide will make sure that the tip is appropriately distributed among all the staff members on the trek.

12. Spending/Emergency Money : Approximately Rs. 8000-10000/- (in Indian Currency)should be carried for miscellaneous expenses including porter and trek crew tips, drinks, soft drinks, etc. We recommend that you carry your travel money in the form of cash as the availability of ATM is less in these remote areas. This can also serve as your emergency spending money.

13. Travel Insurance : It is recommended to have travel insurance for these kinds of adventures. When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary. We will ask for the Travel Insurance Details over a mail. Indians can buy insurance from us while booking the trek.

I and my friends went to Markha Valley trek with Trekmunk and we all had a great time. Walking up and down the hill, coming across some beautiful sites was mesmerizing. Staying in tents was so much fun. And our guide had all the knowledge about the trek. Trekmunk is really good with its food and accommodation facilities. I highly recommend Trekmunk. Kudos to their Team.

No words for the bike trip from Srinagar to Leh. One should experience it to feel it and all this because of the management of Trekmunk especially Mohit and Harshit whose efforts even made the hardest of the ride exciting adventurous and above all safe. Although some hindrances which are quite common like bike issues and medical problems arose with our co-riders, I liked the way these two guys handled it dexterously. I went with one of my best friends and came with a lot more and the trip turned out to be memories that can be cherished for a lifetime. Thanks, Team Trekmunk for giving me a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go on my next adventure with them.

I chose (after a lot of research) Trekmunk for my first trek - The Hampta Pass and Chandratal Trek. And I am so really glad I did so. The trekker needs to only focus on the trek and the beautiful landscape around him/her. The rest of everything is taken care of by Trekmunk from day 1 till the end of the trek. Scrupulously managed logistics; no compromise on safety and security; experienced, intelligent and knowledgeable trek leaders; scrumptious meals; contingency and backup plans; etc. make Trekmunk an ideal choice to go trekking with. My trek was lead by Ashish Pathania, Prashant Reddy and Sanjay Thakur. The three are were thorough professionals. They were jolly, very helpful, experienced, knowledgeable, organized, and needless to say polite yet strict when needed. They played the most important roles in making sure our overall trekking experience was a wonderful one. Thank you Trekmunk for one of the most beautiful experiences I have had till date. Will see you guys soon.

We were a group of 12 friends and booked a trek to Kedartal with Trekmunk, it was an amazing experience..even though it was our first trek to the Himalayas and Kedartal being a difficult terrain trek we were guided excellently by the Trekmunk team. They served us nutritious food, took complete care of our safety and health and gave us the right advice to overcome AMS. Eagerly awaiting our next trek with them.

Our 7 days trip to Meghalaya was a truly memorable experience. Thank you Trekmunk for arranging such an adventurous backpacking trip and a special thanks to Mohit Goswami our trip leader for giving us an experience of what true travelling is. From hitchhiking to traversing the unknown places to eating delicious Momo's to climbing 3000 steps, we did it all in those 7 days which came to end so quickly and none of us wanted to go back home. Such an experience where you just pick up your rucksacks and walk down the roads of a traveller could have been only possible because of Trekmunk!

Practical information.

Singalila Ridge trek follows the border separating Nepal and India and most villages in this area are ethnic Sherpa. The ridge is heavily forested with oak and rhododendron forest and has superb views of many well known peaks- Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga and Chomolhari.

Your journey starts by visiting the old British Raj hill station of Darjeeling followed by a classic six day trek following the main spur running south from the vast Kanchenjunga massif. After the trek we visit the hill station of Kalimpong staying at the historical Himalayan Hotel. In Kalimpong you have the chance to visit a Buddhist monastery and orchid nursery or just to relax in the gardens of the hotel with a cup of tea enjoying views of Kanchenjunga.

Fly to Bagdogra

Drive to Darjeeling (4 hours)

Traveller’s Inn in Darjeeling

On the flight to Bagdogra, if the weather is clear, you will get a superb view of the Himalayas from the plane including the giants of Makalu, Everest and of course Kanchenjunga.

The drive to Darjeeling takes about 4 hours and follows the famous Darjeeling toy train. The hill station was built by the British during colonial times in India on top of a ridge facing the Himalayas and soon developed many tea gardens due to the ideal climate.

Excursion to Tiger Hill

Sightseeing in Darjeeling

We are woken early and driven to Tiger Hill for the early morning sunrise views of Kangchenjunga.  On the way back, we visit Ghoom monastery before returning for a late breakfast at the hotel.

Today we explore Darjeeling with a local guide visiting the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which has an interesting collection of Everest memorabilia, and also the zoo with many animals including snow leopard, bear and red panda.  We can also visit one of the many tea plantations and get a tour around the tea processing factory.

Drive to Manebhanjang (1 hour)

Walking 5 hours

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

From Darjeeling we drive for about an hour to the road head at the small town of Manebhanjang. The trail starts by ascending 600 metres along a jeep track and then eases off as it passes through oak and rhododendron forest.  We camp for the night at Megma.  From here there are good views of Darjeeling spread over the ridge opposite and a panaorama of the entire Kangchenjunga range on the other side.

Walking 4 hours

Today we trek along the Singalila ridge and in the pre monsoon season pass flowering magnolias, rhododendrons, primulas and other sub-alpine flowers.  We stop at the holy Kali Pokhari lake which is well known as it never freezes. Around the lake there are many prayer flags and mani walls (carved stones with Buddhist prayers).

From Kali Pokhari it is a steep walk to Sandakphu.   At an altitude of over 3600 metres, it has views of Kangchenjunga, Jannu, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and a number of high peaks in Sikkim and Bhutan such as Chomolhari.

If it is a clear morning we will enjoy sunrise views over Kanchenjunga and Everest!  There are superb views of the Himalaya throughout the day as we walk along the Singalila ridge passing through forests of rhododendron and Himalayan fir. We camp overnight at Phalut which is where Nepal, Sikkim and West Bengal all meet- there are also views of both Everest and Kangchenjunga.

For the first part of today’s walk we stay on the ridge before descending through rhododendron and magnolia forest to our campsite at Ramam.

The trail continues descending with views of thickly forested hillsides and subtropical valleys along with an increasing number of farmlands and villages.  After reaching the Sri Khola valley there is a short climb to the village of Rimbik.

Drive to Kalimpong (2 hours)

Himalayan Hotel in Kalimpong

In the morning we meet the jeeps for the drive to Kalimpong.  Kalimpong has a similar layout to Darjeeling as it straddles a ridge.  We can relax here for the rest of the day while enjoying the views of the surrounding Himalayan foothills and perhaps make a visit to the Bhutanese Gompa.

Drive to Bagdogra airport (3 hours)

In the morning we drive to Bagdogra airport where we catch the flight to Delhi.

Typical Day On Camping Trek in Nepal

We provide a comfortable experience on our camping style treks. Our team works hard to support you so that you can relax and enjoy trekking in Nepal . We provide personal tents, mess tent, kitchen tent and toilet tent(s). The camp will be set up and dismantled by the trek crew. We bring along a cook and kitchen helpers to provide the meals.

The day starts with an early morning mug of tea brought to your tent by one of the trek crew. Before heading for breakfast you pack your overnight gear into your duffel bag. During breakfast the trek crew pack away the tents. The porters arrange their loads and set off on the trail in the cool of the morning. After breakfast, between 7am and 8am, we start walking.

The pace of the trek is moderate as there is plenty of time in the itinerary to reach the camp for tonight. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and explore the local villages. Lunch will be around midday at a spot by the side of the trail. Our cooks prepare lunch for us and the food is usually ready by the time the group arrives.

After lunch we continue the walk and on most days we arrive to camp by mid afternoon. Some of the trek crew would have gone ahead of the group to set up camp and to put up the tents. On arrival to camp you will get a hot drink and biscuits. In the evening our cook will provide a three course meal in the mess tent around 6pm.

After supper the leaders will discuss the plan for the next day. Afterwards people might stay in the mess tent chatting about the day’s events or playing cards. After a tiring day most people head to their tent quite early for the night. Tomorrow is likely to be very similar as today! The only difference is that if we are crossing a high pass or climbing to a summit we leave camp earlier in the morning.

You can read more about our Camping Treks in Nepal on our Blog. This article explains the advantages of camping versus teahouse lodge treks. It also describes what the campsite set up is like and more about the food provided by our cooks.

Food provided on Camping Trek in Nepal

While on a camping style trek in Nepal we provide tasty and nutritional food. We make sure there is more than enough quantity to go around as trekkers will be hungry after a long day on the trail. Over the years we have worked on increasing the variety of the menus. We have expanded the list of ingredients provided to the cooks so they have more to work with. Also in 2015 we purchased two food dehydrators with a vacuum sealing machine. We dehydrate a large number of different vegetables in Kathmandu before departure. This has transformed the quality of food especially on longer treks to remote areas.

For breakfast we provide porridge or cereal, toast or chapatis and eggs. There will be hot drinks including tea, herbal teas, hot chocolate and coffee. We provide fresh coffee from our Bialetti Moka coffee machine.

For lunch we stop at a convenient spot with water at the side of the trail. The cook and kitchen walk ahead of the group in the morning and lunch should be ready shortly after our arrival. After lunch we have time to relax before starting to walk again in the afternoon.

On arrival at camp in the afternoon you have biscuits and a hot drink such as tea or coffee. Around 6pm we serve a three course meal in the mess tent. The starter is often soup with popcorn or poppadoms. We have a range of main dishes and carbohydrates including rice, potatoes or pasta.

We cater for a variety of dietary requirements. Our meals are suitable for vegetarians. If there is a meat dish then we also provide vegetarian options as standard. During booking we find out if you have any dietary needs and agree upon meal plans before departure. If you have any questions about the food provided please get in touch with us to discuss further.

Sandakphu and Phalut Trek on Singalila Ridge:

The Sandakphu and Phalut trek, or the shorter Sandakphu trek , is a must to do trek for people looking to explore Darjeeling or Sikkim hills with breathtaking panoramas of Himalayan peaks. Our given itinerary follows the Singalila Ridge from South to North. For this reason, this trek is also called the “ Singalila Ridge Trek” .

sandakphu-phalut-a-himalayan-panoramic-route

About our trail:

Our trail reaches its highest point, Sandakphu, at ~ 3636 m/11926 ft. This is the highest point in West Bengal, in the district of Darjeeling. Phalut is another tabletop on the same ridge that is further north of Sandakphu, almost at the same height of ~ 3620 m. Due to its northerly position, i.e., its proximity to the high mountains, Phalut offers somewhat closer mountain views of the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas.

One of the finest ridge trek in the Himalayas – Mesmerising sunrise and sunset views

As already said, the trail follows the famous Singalila Ridge, a prominent spur that runs southward from the Kanchenjunga massif. This ridge is the border between India and Nepal in the Eastern Himalayas. The east side of the ridge is India, and Nepal is on the west side. Although not as interior as some of the Sikkim treks that we arrange, this trail is still among one of the most scenically rewarding in the Indian Himalayas.

Below is a satellite map image showing an aerial view of the Singalila Ridge. You can easily see how open the vista is when you are walking along the ridge.

hiking-trail-on-singalila-ridge

You will get spectacular panoramic views of Nepal Himalayas including Kanchendzongha range, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Janu, Chamlang, Baruntse and a host of Sikkim peaks all seen in one stretch. You may absorb the serene “Sleeping Buddha” formation from multiple vantage points following our trail.

Trekking inside the Singalila National Park – the forests of Eastern Himalayas:

The Singalila National park area has rare species like Red Panda and is a birder’s paradise. Flowering of Rhododendrons and Magnolia turn the forest with red, pink and white shades during spring and foliage hue during autumn-fall.

Suggested Sandakphu & Phalut trek Itinerary 2023:

Our route follows the Singalila Ridge, which is the border of India and Nepal. Due to stay restrictions, non-Indians, i.e., foreigners, can’t stay in Nepal homestays or tea houses anymore like the Indians do. So the Indians and foreigners will have different itineraries.

Day 1: Drive from NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport to Chitrey   (~ 2200 m, 7200 ft) – 90 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Shared homestay accommodation. Foreigners can’t stay here, but 3 Km down at Maneybhanjung  (~ 1980 m/6500 ft). Day 2: Trek to Tumling (~ 2900 m/9500 ft) – 9 Km via Meghma ;– 5 to 6 hours. (Foreigners need to stay inside West Bengal, India at Tonglu GTA Trekkers Hut , shared dormitories ~ 3050 m/10000 ft.) Day 3: Trek down to Gairibas (~ 2570 m/8430 ft) and up to  Kalapokhri (~ 3100 m/10200 ft) – 12 Km – 6 to 7 hours. As there is no accommodation in this area inside India, foreigners need to trek directly to Sandakphu (6 Km further ahead) or else stay back at Gairibas GTA Trekkers Hut . Day 4: Trek to Sandakphu (~ 3636 m/11930 ft) – 6 Km – 3 to 4 hours. Stay in a lodge/hotel/trekkers hut, etc. (For foreigners accommodation is at Sandakphu GTA Trekkers Hut ) Day 5: Sandakphu to Phalut – 21 Km – 8 to 9 hours at a moderate pace. Accommodation at GTA Trekkers Hut (shared dormitories) for ALL. Day 6: Wake up early and hike (~ 15/20 mins) to Phalut Top   for the sunrise views. – After breakfast, trek down to Gorkhey – 15 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Lodge or a homestay accommodation. Day 7: Trek to Srikhola bridge via Ramam – 12 Km – 5 hours; Drive to NJP or Bagdogra – 150 km – 6 hours or transfer to Darjeeling – 90 Km – 4 hours, etc.

Important notes regarding the itinerary:

Infograhics on Singalila Ridge trek:

From the below image you will get a general idea about the Singalila Ridge trek in Darjeeling that includes different variants and possibilities.  Note that foreigners/non Indians must stay within India.

singalila-ridge-infographics-trail-accommodation-in-india-nepal

Foreigners, i.e., non-Indians, must walk and nightstay on the Indian side of Singalila Ridge:

This is a teahouse-style trek that follows the famous Singalila Ridge, forming the border between Darjeeling (West Bengal) in India and Nepal. As a matter of fact, you can get better facilities and services in terms of accommodation, food, comfort, etc. on the Nepal side (homestay, lodge, and hotel).

Whereas on the Indian side, the area falls inside Singalila National Park and is a restricted area. Only basic government-made trekker huts are there along the trek route for accommodation at night. You will have more options for homestays and lodges once you are outside the core area.

Starting in December 2021, Indian authorities are not allowing foreigners/non Indian passport holders to stay in Nepal while walking on the Singalila Ridge. So for foreign nationals, the accommodation options are GTA-operated government huts within Singalila National Park. This is enforced on the spot by the Indian paramilitary personnel stationed at various checkpoints along the trail on the India-Nepal border.

You can’t stay inside Nepal, even if you have a Nepal visa. This is due to the fact that there are no “ passport control ” offices between India and Nepal along the trail.

So it is mandatory for foreigners to stay inside India and make a night halt at the GTA/Govt. Trekkers Hut while trekking inside Singalila National Park.

On the other hand, for Indian citizens, we arrange stays in Nepal teahouses, wherever possible, and their itinerary will be different than that of foreigners.

What are the accommodations during Sandakphu Phalut trek:

This is a “Tea House” trek, i.e we don’t camp inside Singalila National Park but stay in Homestay/Lodge available on the trail. As you should expect on a mountain trail, these are basic accommodation run by the local Nepali/Tibetan families. Rooms are dormitory bed type with triple/quad sharing or more. Beds and blankets are neat and clean. Don’t expect an attached toilet or running hot water anywhere.

Do we camp and stay in a tent?

No we don’t. As a matter of fact, none is supposed to camp within the boundary of Singalila National park. This trail inside national park is designed for years to run a Tea House mode trek, same as its neighbouring Nepal treks. If you prefer a pristine full camping trek, we do have more legitimate options for you. These treks lie further north to Phalut on the Singalila ridge inside Sikkim and  offer closer views of Sleeping Buddha and high mountains of Nepal and Sikkim.  Our less crowded  Phoktey Dara or Singalila Pass Phalut   trek will surely entice you for great camping experiences.

Regarding GTA/Foreigners accommodation on

Phalut has only one accommodation option. The Trekkers Hut is operated by GTA (Gorkha Territorial Administration), an govt. administrative body in the Darjeeling Hills. This can’t be booked online neither you can check availability unless you drop in to their office, either at Gorkha Bhavan, Saltlake Kolkata (near City Centre, Salt Lake) or Darjeeling, Silver Fir building office. More over it has a maximum capacity of 20 beds, and they keep few on hold for guides/porters/staff accompanying trekkers. There is NO private accommodation/lodge at Phalut or vicinity. Due to heavy demand mostly this is full in the season.

Is this trek suitable for the beginners?

Also we have noticed that beginners/first time trekkers are often finding it pretty difficult to cover the 21 Km trail from Sandakphu to Phalut. So considering both we either keep you at Phalut Trekkers Hut or at Sabarkum/Molley, a place 14 Km from Sandakphu on the way to Phalut. This is decided case to case as per each individual group. However the itinerary remains same and you reach Gorkhey via Phalut in case the accommodation is at Sabarkum/Molley.

Alternate shorter and easy Tour – Sandakphu trek:

Though the trail ahead of Sandakphu is Easy considering the terrain, but adding Phalut involves total 6 days of trek covering around 80 Km. Often it can be strenuous if not prepared well. Also beginners as well as experienced trekkers can find it exhausting to reach Phalut, 21 Km from Sandakphu in a day.

However we have started arranging a smaller version of this trail omitting Phalut from the itinerary. This is the shortened version of Singalila ridge trek and called “ Sandakphu Trek ” . The wonderful walk along the ridge is ideal for the beginners/first timers, who want to explore Darjeeling/Sikkim Himalayas. This essentially retains almost all the flavour that the Sandakphu and Phalut produces, certainly the not scenic walk to Phalut! However this is not a showstopper considering the trail is same (initial 3 days of trek) till Sandakphu. Sleeping Buddha, Famous trio (Everest Lhotse, Makalu), and numerous Sikkim and Nepal high Himalayan ranges can be observed.  The descent from Sandakphu to the beautiful village of Gurdum is similar in beauty that of  Phalut to Gorkhey trail. Finally the Sandakphu trek also ends at Srikhola same as the longer duration Phalut trail. Advantage of Sandakphu trek is this trail requires 4 days of trekking and can be done year long apart from the monsoon (June to September). The walk is not strenuous like Phalut and covers around 40 Km in 4 days which is indeed an Easy grade trek and can be completed comfortably by anyone who has got basic physical fitness and will to walk.

We strongly advice to check our “Sandakphu Trek” itinerary, who want a shorter and easier version of this trail without losing much.

How to reach Chitrey (The trek base):

Nearest Rail station:  New Jailpaiguri (Station Code: NJP)

Nearest   Airport:  Bagdogra (Airport Code: IXB)

We will arrange a pickup  from NJP/Bagdogra/Siliguri to Chitrey and drop from Srikhola to NJP/Bagdogra. This will be shared by the team members on actual basis and paid directly to the driver. Typically a Tata Sumo/Mahindra Maxx charges Rs 3500 for a drop to Chitrey and Rs 5000 from Srikhola to NJP/Bagdogra. One such car can accommodate 6 to 8 people.  This is NOT included in the TREK FEE and to be payable directly to the driver/owner.

If you wish to reach our Trek Base Chitrey on your own by public transportation:

Reaching Chitrey without a reserved vehicle will require some local road knowledge and changing of vehicles. Return from Srikhola is much easier as there are direct shared service to Siliguri and Darjeeling.

  • From NJP railway station take a shared jeep for Darjeeling and get down at Ghoom railway station. You can get one such shared jeep from Tenzing Norgay Bus terminus/Junction area in Siliguri also. From Ghoom take one shared service for Sukhiapokhri which is 12 Km. Change from here to Maneybhanjang, 7 Km away. Our trek base Chitrey is 3 Km up on the Sandakphu road. You are supposed to reach our Homestay at Chitrey on your own. You may get one vehicle to hire from Maneybhanjang to Chitrey (for Rs 400/500) but that depends on time and on driver’s will.
  • From NJP/Bagdogra reach Darjeeling Mor (crossing/chowk in Siliguri on the way to Darjeeling) on Hill Cart Road. From here you get shared services for Sukhiapokhri. From Sukhia you can reach Chitrey as mentioned earlier. Be sure that you have enough time as you may have to wait long for your turn. Sometime you may get a direct Maneybhanjung service (essentially the cars returning to Srikhola) in around noon/early afternoon.
  • While returning things are much easier. There are morning shared services from Srikhola to Siliguri and Darjeeling. For Srikhola there are two vehicles early in the morning at 5:30 am to SIliguri. It takes 6/7 hours to reach Darjeeling Mor in Siliguri (Rs 400 per seat). From here take an auto rickshaw to NJP/Bagdogra.
  • From Srikhola you get shared services for Darjeeling city. Early morning vehicles start between 6 and 7 am. Then you get jeeps between 10 and 11 am. It takes around 4 hours to Darjeeling (Rs 200 per seat).

How to reach NJP:

For the treks in Sikkim and Darjeeling , one has to reach the city of Siliguri (considered the corridor to the North-East) in West Bengal.

The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), 5 Km from Siliguri and the airport Bagdogra is 10 Km.

You can fly or by train reach Siliguri from Kolkata ( good for the trekkers coming from South/central or Western India) or Delhi as per your convenience from any part within India.

Direct flights are available from New Delhi and Kolkata. All the flights to Bagdogra reaches late in the morning or early afternoon. It becomes difficult to reach the trek base like Yuksom/Hilley/Uttarey on the same day unless a car is booked (takes around 8 hours to reach). One can stay the night in Siliguri and start the travel to the trek base next morning. It is better to reach Siliguri by flight/train to Kolkata and then take an overnight train to NJP unless you are coming from northern India.

From Kolkata to Siliguri:

1) by train:.

There are several overnight trains running between Kolkata (Howrah or Sealdah) to NJP. Day trains are also available.

From airport (Dumdum, CCU) , Sealdah railway station is 15 Km and may take 1 to 2 hours depending upon the time you travel. Howrah is 17 Km and may take up to 2 hours during the heavy traffic in the rush hours. Howrah and Sealdah are only 5 Km apart, though it may take an hour to travel. Pre Paid taxi booths are available.

DARJEELING MAIL – Train No. – 12343  (Good option to reach NJP in the morning. Starts around 10 pm in the night and reaches NJP 8 am in the morning.) PADATIK EXPRESS – Train No. – 12377  (Good option to reach NJP in the morning. Starts around 11 pm in the night and reaches NJP 9 am in the morning.) KANCHANKANYA EXPRESS – Train No. – 13149 (Starts at 8:30 pm in the evening and reaches NJP 7:30 am in the morning) SHATABDI EXPRESS – Train No. – 12041  (Day train, starts 2:15 pm in the afternoon and reaches NP at 10:20 pm in the night. There are hotels/lodges outside the railway station at a walking distance of 5 minutes. Otherwise book an auto rickshaw/taxi to Siliguri, which takes around 15 minutes. There are several hotels around Siliguri Junction/Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus/S.N.T (Sikkim Nationalised Transport stand).

There are other trains also of which some run daily and some on particular days of week.

Avoid booking wait listed (WL) tickets in AC classes (1A/2A/3A) or Chair Car (CC). Book Sleeper class (SL)/Second Sitting class (2S) tickets which have normally more seats/berths and hence much better chance to get confirmed.

2) By flight:

From Kolkata(CCU)  take a flight to Bagdogra (IXB). From airport book a taxi to reach Siliguri which is 10 Km away.

From Delhi to Siliguri:

1) by train:.

Following trains are good to reach NJP and run daily.

DIBRUGARH RAJDHANI – Train No. 12424  (arrives NJP late in the morning @ 10:45 am) NORTH EAST EXP – Train No. 12506  (arrives NJP @ 8:20 am in the morning) BRAHMAPUTRA MAIL – Train No. 12424  (arrives NJP at 5 am in the morning. But this train runs late frequently.

Always avoid booking wait listed (WL) tickets in AC classes (1A/2A/3A) or Chair Car (CC). Book Sleeper class (SL)/Second Sitting class (2S) tickets which have normally more seats/berth and hence much better chance to get confirmed.

From Delhi (DEL) take a flight to Bagdogra (IXB). From airport book a taxi to reach Siliguri which is 10 Km away.

For night stay in NJP/SIliguri:

Trekkers reaching on the previous day before the journey to the actual trek base need to stay the night in Siliguri/NJP. There are several options in Siliguri for spending a night while staying in Standard or Budget accommodation. It is better to reach to the centre of SIliguri called Siliguri Junction (adjacent to Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus and Sikkim nationalised Transport/S.N.T stand). It takes 30 minutes from Bagdogra or 15 minutes from NJP. There are hotels 5 minutes walking from NJP also.

Return from NJP/Bagdogra:

Normally you reach NJP/Bagdogra from any trek base  by 5/6 pm in the evening. You can take any train after 7 pm to Kolkata safely, which reach early in the morning. Accordingly arrange your homeward journey from Kolkata onward.

Drive from NJP/Bagdogra to Chitrey: 90 Km - 4/5 hours

the singalila ridge trek

Himalayan Trekkers is a fantastic tour operator that I highly recommend. They had provided an experienced and knowledgeable guide who will take you on the adventure of a lifetime. The treks are well-organized and the food is delicious. I especially appreciated the company’s commitment to sustainability and ethical tourism.

In short, Himalayan Trekkers is a great choice for anyone looking for a safe, enjoyable, and sustainable trekking experience in Sandakphu – Phalut trek route. Special mention: Dawa Drukpa is an awesome guide and Robin is an awesome porter, even better as people. Thanks Himalayan Trekkers.

We booked a 7D6N trek to Sandakphu & Phalut, and a driver for the following days to take us to Sikkim. The communication in advance was clear and swift. We had a great guide (Amar) and driver. We can recommend booking your trek through Himalaya Trekkers, but be aware of the more than basic conditions in the GTA huts run by the government, which are mandatory accommodation for foreigners.

the singalila ridge trek

SINGALILA RIDGE TREK

Prayer Flags Singalila Ridge Sikkim

Duration: 17 days Accomodations: Hotels, camping on the trek Grade: Moderate-strenuous Best time:  March-May & October-November

The Singalila Ridge is an excellent moderate to strenuous trek. The trek was often used by officers of the British Raj. In the summer, they escaped the heat of the plains by retiring to Darjeeling and the mountains beyond. The itinerary visits some of the most interesting towns in West Bengal and Sikkim, including historic Darjeeling, and walks up to the point on the map where Nepal, Sikkim and West Bengal meet. The itinerary is very varied - including visits and a good look around Kalimpong, Gangtok and Darjeeling.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVE DELHI. Our Local representative will greet you at the international airport and help you transfer to your hotel.

DAY 2: AT LEISURE. You can either rest or venture out into the city for a taste of the heat, dust sights and sounds of teeming India. Delhi has endless sightseeing possibilities. Some of the best places to visit are the Red Fort, the Lodi Tombs and Lodi Gardens, Tibet House, India Gate and the Old Observatory. Delhi basically is 12 cities all merged into one and laced together by the new city of the British Raj, Overnight at  Hotel.

DAY 3: FLY TO BAGDOGRA, DRIVE TO KALIMPONG. (4,100ft/1,250m) After catching the 3-hour morning flight to Bagdogra, we will be met and driven to Kalimpong. The drive takes two or three hours, first through a few tea plantations and jungle and thereafter up into the foothills above the Indian plains. Overnight at the Himalaya View Hotel.

Kalimpong: Kalimpong, 74 km east of Darjeeling and 72 km north of Siliguri, is a bustling and rapidly expanding, although still relatively small, bazaar town. It is set among the rolling foothills and deep valleys of the Himalaya.

It was once part of the lands belonging to the rajas of Sikkim, until the beginning of the 18th century, when the Bhutanese took it from them. In the 19th century it passed into the hands of the British and thus became part of West Bengal. It became a centre for Scottish missionary activity in the late 19th century. Until the outbreak of the Sino-Indian war in 1962, Kalimpong was one of the most important centres of Indo-Tibetan commerce, with mule trains passing over the 10,826ft/3,300m high Jalepla Mountain pass. The Kalimpong-Jalepla road was the largest all-weather route between the two countries. With relations improving between India and China, Kalimpong will probably lose its trans-border business to Gangtok, in Sikkim.

The main crops grown locally are ginger and cardamom. Kalimpong was once densely- forested, but widespread tree felling has left large areas denuded. There are still some areas where tracts of forest still stand, including along the left back of the Teesta River and in the environs of Lava and Richila.

Kalimpong's attractions include three gompas, a couple of solidly-built churches, a sericulture centre, orchid nurseries, and the fine views over the surrounding countryside. Although not many travelers visit Kalimpong, there is enough here to keep you occupied for a couple of days. For the energetic, there are some good walks around the town.

The Himalaya View Hotel. The Himalaya View Hotel still captures the romance of a turn-of-the-century boarding house. Wood floors and stone walls convey the warm feeling of a mountain lodge, but Tibetan furnishings disclose a different history. Once the home of a leading Kalimpong British family - the author Annie Perry grew up here - the large sitting room with fireplace invites guests to gather and make use of a personal collection of Tibetan literature.

DAY 4 : SIGHTSEEING IN KALIMPONG, DRIVE TO GANGTOK. (5,074ft/1,547m). The morning will be spent sightseeing in the town and visiting the main monasteries, before being driven to Gangtok. Again, this is approximately a 3-hour drive, spectacular in places. Watch out for the amusing road signs! On arrival in Gangtok you will be transferred to the Netuk House Hotel or Nork Hill Hotel.

Gangtok: The capital of Sikkim, Gangtok (which means 'hilltop'), occupies the West Side of a long ridge flanking the Tanipul River. The scenery is spectacular and there are excellent views of the entire Kangchenjunga Range from many points in the environs of the city.

Many people expect Gangtok to be a smaller version of Kathmandu. It's not, but it is an interesting and pleasant place to stay. Gangtok only became the capital in the mid-1800s (previous capitals were at Yuksom and Rabdentse). The town has undergone rapid modernization in recent years. Gangtok has also become something of a hill station resort, being a popular holiday destination for Bengalis. The influx peaks during the 10-day Dura Puja holiday period at the end of September or early October, when Bengalis converge on the town en masse from the plains.

To the north is Enchey Gompa and the telecommunications tower. The palace of the former chogyal and the impressive Royal Chapel (the Tsuk-La-Khang) are lower down along the ridge. Nearby is the huge Tashiding, or Secretariat complex, and, below it, the relatively recently built Legislative Assembly, both executed in a traditional architectural style. On a continuation of this ridge but much lower is the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, an Orchid Sanctuary and, not far beyond the institute, a large chorten and adjoining gompa.

DAY 5: SIGHTSEEING IN GANGTOK, DRIVE TO RUMTEK.   (5,084ft/1,550m). You should visit the local handicrafts centre, the Institute of Tibetology, the local town markets of Gangtok, and the Orchidarium. In the afternoon, you drive to Rumtek monastery. It is only an hour’s drive away and affords excellent views of Gangtok from the opposite hillside. Overnight at the Martham Village Resort. This is a very pleasant spot and consists of a number of thatched cottages dotted over a hillside next to a village.

Rumtek Monastery: The the seat of Karmapa Rinpoche, Rumtek is the newest and perhaps the most impressive in size and grandeur in Sikkim. Like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the leader of the Gelugpa sect, the Karmapa Rinpoche (literally Precious One), is a reincarnate lama much revered by the Sikkimese people. Portraits of the 16th Karmapa, who passed away in 1981, are seen in every Kargyudpa monastery showing a kindly round face and ornate black hat, which he holds on his head with one hand. The hat is said to have the power of flight and if not held down or kept tight in a special box will fly away. The old Rumtek monastery was destroyed by an earthquake, but has now been restored and sits just below the new complex, built to house the 16th Karmapa when he fled from Tibet in the 1960s. Also worth visiting is the nearby Jawaharhal Nehru Botanical Gardens, 75 acres of temperate forest and plants. If you feel like the exercise you can walk along the road to the monastery and no doubt meet some of the local children who will be keen to strike up a conversation.

DAY 6: DRIVE TO DARJEELING. (7,001ft/2,134m).  Again, you will enjoy a very scenic drive that may take six or seven hours. Sikkim is nearly all deep gorges with heavily-forested mountainsides with twisting rivers in the bottom of the gorges. There are steep patches of terracing and on clear days there are excellent views of Kangchenjunga. After arriving in Darjeeling, you will be transferred to the New Elgin Hotel.

DAY 7: DRIVE TO MANEYBHANJANG, (7,000ft/2,134m) TREK TO MEGHMA. (9,512ft/2,900m). After a drive of about 1 1/2 hrs you begin the trek. The trail passes through evergreen forest and bamboo glades, across farmland and pastures and past small villages until you reach Meghma, a total of around 18km. From here there is a panoramic view of the Himalaya to the north. Camp overnight.

DAY 8: TREK TO KALIPOKHARI. (10,195ft/3,108m) You begin by trekking 4 kms to Kalipokhari. This is a crystal lake, surrounded by pine trees. You then ascend for about another 4 kms as far as Bikhebhanjang (10,977ft/3,346m). You will now reach the magnolia and rhododendron forests around Sandakphu, from where you will get a magnificent view of some of the world's highest mountains, including Everest, Kangchenjunga and Makalu. Camp overnight.

DAY 9: TREK TO SANDAKPHU. (11,927ft/3,636m). Although this is a fairly short trek, there is no point rushing to the top! Today can be spent exploring, looking at the view, or simply relaxing, getting used to the height and enjoying the peaceful mountain and forest surroundings, before the walk up to the viewpoint at Phalut in two days time. Camp overnight.

DAY 10: TREK TO MOLLEY. (11,599ft/3,536m). (5-6 hrs) 14km. The trail follows along the Singalila Ridge through chestnut, oak and silver fir, with commanding views of the Himalaya all along the route. Molley is a small village in the alpine-like forest. Camp overnight.

DAY 11: TREK TO PHALUT. (11,810ft/3,600m) (5 hrs, 8kms) This is a fairly easy walk to the tri-junction of Sikkim, Nepal and Bengal. This is the main and best viewpoint for the spread of mountains to the north. The afternoon is free to explore or just gaze at the mountains. Camp overnight.

DAY 12: TREK TO RAMMAM. (8,398ft/2,560m) (5 hrs, 12km) This is a gentle walk through a hidden valley, passing through the villages of Gorkhey and Samaden en route. This is an easy descent, with the weather getting warmer with the decrease in altitude. There should be orchids and a full range of flowers in view, especially during the spring. Camp overnight.

DAY 13: TREK TO RIMBICK. (8,396ft/2,559m) (6 hrs, 18km) For the first 9 km or so this is along fairly level paths until Sirkhola, a well-known bird-watching centre. From here the path begins a gentle gradient down to Rimbick, the largest town in the area. It is possible to see Darjeeling from the town. Camp overnight.

DAY 14: END TREK, DRIVE TO DARJEELING. It is a fairly long drive back to Darjeeling and you will arrive after a lunch stop at Sukhia. The rest of the day is free to relax, though there is no need to rush out and look around as you have another two days to explore this fascinating town. Overnight at the Windamere Hotel.

Darjeeling: Straddling a ridge in the Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya and surrounded by tea plantations on all sides, Darjeeling has been a popular hill station since the British established it as an R&R camp centre for their troops in the mid-1800s. The industrious Brits, not averse to mixing a little business with pleasure, recognized that the quality of the soil and the mild climate were ideal for tea cultivation. The forested hill slopes were soon denuded of their cover and planted with this most lucrative revenue earner. These days, people come here to escape from the heat and humidity of the north Indian plain. You get an indication of how popular Darjeeling is from the 70 or so hotels recognized by the tourist office and the scores of others which don't come up to their requirements. Here you will find yourself surrounded by mountain people from all over the eastern Himalaya. They have come to work, to trade or - in the case of the Tibetans - as refugees. Mother Teresa spent her early years as a nun here with the sisters at Loreto Convent.

Moutains from Darjeeling

DAY 15: SIGHTSEEING IN DARJEELING. Today you make an early morning visit to Tiger Hill to see the sunrise over Kangchenjunga.  A short ride on the famous mountain railway is also a must. Trains came to India in the early part of the last century - among the very first and most novel is the famous Toy Train of Darjeeling. It is exactly 116 years old having made its maiden trip in September 1881.

In 1870, an agent working for the Eastern Bengal Railway came up with a brilliant idea to reduce the costs of transport. His name was Franklyn Prestage, and his idea was the Toy Train. It took eight long years for Prestage to submit his scheme to Governor Sir Ashey Eden, who gave it immediate sanction. Named the Darjeeling Steam Tramway Company, it was changed to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Company on 15 September 1881. It remained as such until it was taken over by the Indian Government on 20 October 1948. The construction had begun in 1879, the first 20 miles from Siliguri to Tindharia station was opened in March 1880 for the Viceroy's special train only, and finally, on 4 July 1881, the baby locomotive and three coaches puffed right through to Darjeeling - a total of 50.75 miles.

A half day trip on the world-famous railway is highly recommended (Please be aware that the railway sometimes runs out of coal, and therefore the train that runs on the tourist circuit is not always running. You can always get onto the regular departure that runs down to Siliguri, getting off at the first stop, from where we can arrange for you to be picked up). Sometimes the train goes so slowly that it is faster to walk! Some of you may remember Brian Blessed, the actor, sitting on the roof of the train in his film that re-enacted Mallory and Irvine's attempt on Everest.

There are also various interesting monasteries to visit and the Himalayan Zoo with its black bears, Siberian tigers and snow leopards. A visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is well worthwhile, for the list of Everest summiteers. There is also the Tibet Self-Help Centre and the Happy Valley tea estate. Overnight at the Windamere Hotel.

DAY 16: DRIVE TO BAGDOGRA, FLY TO DELHI. On arrival back in Delhi you will be transferred to the Imperial Hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax by the pool with a beer or perhaps go shopping in the emporiums around Connaught Circus.

DAY 17: FLY HOME. Transfer to airport and fly home.

There will quite likely be changes to the itinerary in terms of anything from on-the-spot choice of campsite to when a rest day is taken. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns off the beaten track, local availability of horses or yaks, can contribute to the need for changes. The Trek guide will do everything in his power to see that you are inconvenienced as little as possible in such circumstances. Timings are approximate.

India, Sikkim & Darjeeling

grading

An easy but rewarding trek which offers spectacular views of the big mountains including Everest and Kanchenjunga. This trek traverses along the Singalila ridge which forms the international border line between India and Nepal. It offers a good distant view of Mt. Everest (8850 m) accompanied by Lhotse (8501m) and Makalu (8475m) and a close view of Kanchenjunga (8586m). Kanchenjunga along with the surrounding ranges closely resembles a person sleeping and hence the view from Sandakphu is popularly called 'The Sleeping Buddha'. The Singalila ridge is actually an extension of one of the ridges that sweep down from the high snows of Kanchenjunga itself and the trek along this ridge is renowned as being one of the most scenically rewarding in the entire Himalayas. This area is also culturally diverse, with Tibetan, Mongolian, and Indians intermixed with immigrant Nepalese. Buddhism is the most popular religion and during the course of our trip there's immense chance of interaction with the warm locals at Trekker's Huts that dot this trail.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
