Laufey, The Marías and Jungle among 2024 SLC Twilight Concert Series headliners

S ALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Music festival season has officially kicked off — with the first weekend of Coachella wrapping up — and, here in Utah, there are plenty of opportunities for fans to experience big names onstage at a fraction of the price.

On Monday, the lineup for the 37th Twilight Concert Series in Salt Lake City was announced — featuring artists like Laufey , Jungle and The Marías , just to name a few.

Season passes go on sale beginning Tuesday, April 16, at 10 a.m., while tickets for individual shows go on sale starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17.

Season passes for general admission are expected to come out to around $80 after taxes and fees (for an average cost of about $13 per show) while VIP season passes will be about $275 after taxes and fees (for an average cost of about $46 per show).

Service fees are shown on the ticket website, but taxes are not shown until going through the ticketing process, so the prices may differ slightly. All shows will take place at the Gallivan Center except for The Marías, who will perform at Library Square.

Performance dates, individual ticket prices and more information about the performers are all included below.

Friday, June 21 — Laufey, Grace Enger, Anna Beck

The SLC Twilight Concert Series is scheduled to kick off with a bang — with the first performance of the series being Grammy-winning international pop and jazz sensation Laufey . Laufey is a multi-instrumentalist singer, composer and producer based in Los Angeles.

“As a musician, my goal is to bring jazz and classical music to my generation through a more accessible road,” Laufey said on her website .

One of her most popular songs is “ From The Start ,” and several of her songs have hundreds of millions of plays across streaming platforms.

Grace Enger has been supporting Laufey on The Goddess Tour. One of Enger’s most popular songs is “ The Neighborhood ,” which has several million streams. Several of her other songs have hundreds of thousands of plays.

Anna Beck is a local Utah singer who performed at Kilby Court earlier this year.

Individual tickets for Laufey will start at $20 before taxes and fees when purchased in advance.

Thursday, June 27 — Thee Sacred Souls, The Mañanas, Jazzy Olivo

Thee Sacred Souls is a band that plays what their website calls “Southern California sweet soul.”

Their song from 2020 “ Can I Call You Rose? ” has taken off in 2024, being featured in several videos across various social media platforms. The band aims for a more old-school sound — taking inspiration from the ’60s and ’70s eras of music — and has performed on several late-night shows and toured across several countries.

The Mañanas is a band from Denver, Colorado. The band released their debut album in 2021 and one of their most popular songs is “ Don’t Think Your Love Has Given Up .”

Jazzy Olivo is a singer-songwriter from the Dominican Republic who is now based in Utah. One of her most popular videos is of her singing “ El Circo .”

Individual tickets for Thee Sacred Souls will start at $15 before taxes and fees when purchased in advance.

Friday, July 19 — Watchhouse, TBA, Branson Anderson

Watchhouse is a folk duo made up of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz that first started out with the name Mandolin Orange. After they had a child together, they went through a lot of changes — both with their music and their lives.

Despite the change in band name, traces of the former name still exist, as Watchhouse changed their artist name on platforms like YouTube and Spotify, but “Mandolin Orange” still shows up in the text of some music videos and album covers.

One of their most popular songs is “ Golden Embers ” and they have hundreds of millions of streams on several of their songs.

One of the opening acts has yet to be announced, but Branson Anderson is another local singer. Anderson is from Nevada and spends most of his time in Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

Individual tickets for Watchhouse will start at $15 before taxes and fees when purchased in advance.

Wednesday, August 7 — Jungle, BALTHVS, The Plastic Cherries

Jungle is another band that has become quite popular on social media, with their song “ Back on 74 ” taking platforms by storm and inspiring users to recreate dancers’ moves from the official music video.

BALTHVS is described as “ a Colombian psychedelic funk trio ” that combines elements from genres including disco and Middle Eastern music. BALTHVS has reached millions of streams worldwide and played at Colombia’s largest music festival.

The Plastic Cherries hail from Utah and often perform in the Salt Lake area and states surrounding Utah, according to their website. Their most popular song to date is “ Lovers On The Run .”

Individual tickets for Jungle will start at $15 before taxes and fees when purchased in advance.

Friday, August 16 — The Marías, Automatic, Homephone

The Marías is a Grammy-nominated band that has collaborated with the likes of Bad Bunny and Tainy.

The Marías are set to release their sophomore album, “Submarine,” at the end of May. The band released the album’s lead single “ Run Your Mouth ” in March. One of their most popular songs is “ Cariño ,” and they have hundreds of millions of plays on several songs.

Automatic is joining The Marías on their North American tour, including the stop in Salt Lake City. One of their most popular songs is “ Too Much Money ” and they just released their latest album “Excess” in 2022.

Homephone is a band based in Salt Lake City, and their song “ More Than Chemical ” has earned tens of thousands of streams.

Individual tickets for The Marías will start at $15 before taxes and fees when purchased in advance.

Wednesday, August 21 — Alex G, julie, Cannibal Queen

Alex G is a Philadelphia-based musician who has several songs with hundreds of millions of streams. He started out writing and recording music in his bedroom as a teenager and later worked with Frank Ocean.

Alex G is known for songs like “ Mary ” and “ Sarah ” and released his latest album “God Save The Animals” in 2022.

There is not much information online about the band julie (stylized in all lowercase letters), yet it has managed to amass quite a large following on social media. One of their most popular songs is “ flutter ,” but one of their most popular music videos is for “ pg.4 a picture of three hedges .”

Cannibal Queen is a local Utah artist who has opened for artists including Neon Trees and The Aces. Cannibal Queen has been making music in Salt Lake City since 2016 and has continued on that journey, playing at Kilby Block Party in the past and now at the Salt Lake City Twilight Concert Series.

Individual tickets for Alex G will start at $10 before taxes and fees when purchased in advance.

Venue and event rules

When buying tickets, a warning at the bottom of the page reads, “All events are held rain or shine. Artists subject to change.”

Everyone entering the venue — including children — needs to have a ticket. There will be free water stations, as well as food trucks and beverage stations.

There are no refunds (even if a specific artist cancels) and there is no re-entry into the venue. Weapons, firearms, backpacks, large purses and pets (excluding service animals) are also not allowed.

Umbrellas, blankets, chairs, coolers, outside food/drink/alcohol/liquids, drones and professional recording equipment are prohibited.

Mild spring weather in Reno-Sparks this week; Festival of Colors set for Saturday

the sounds of the 60s tour

Is spring here for good? Temperatures will stay above freezing this week in the valleys, and there's only a slight chance of precipitation at all. The Festival of Colors makes its return to Rancho San Rafael Park on Saturday — you'll probably want to put a lot of thought into your apparel in advance.

This week in history: Saturday is the 201st anniversary of the birth of Jesse Lee Reno, namesake of the Biggest Little City. Reno was a Union Army general killed by a Confederate sniper in 1862. Reno never set foot in Nevada, let alone his namesake city, but researchers think Central Pacific Railroad president Leland Stanford named the town after Reno to honor Stanford's friend Gen. Irvin McDowell, one of Reno's former commanding officers.

Northern Nevada events, April 15-21

Menopause: The Musical, April 16-21  This is a return engagement for this traveling show that pokes musical fun at women and aging with some funny and sometimes poignant tunes. Shows take place at 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Performances are at the Showroom, Eldorado Hotel Casino, 345 N. Virginia St., Reno. The show is in town through June 30. Tickets are $35-$55. Details at caesars.com/eldorado-reno.

Narrow Head, April 17: Of the best records of 2023 was “Moments of Clarity,” the second album by this Texas group that mixes emo-like metal and punk, classic ’90s alternative rock, and effects-heavy shoegaze for a sound all their own. They’ll play at this Holland-Project-sponsored show at 8 p.m. at Cypress, 761 S. Virginia St., Reno. Tickets are $18-$20. Details at hollandreno.org.

Y&T, April 19: This Bay Area heavy rock band is a frequent visitor to this particular venue in Reno, and they are set to return for this show at 8 p.m. at Cargo, Whitney Peak Hotel, 255 N. Virginia St. Tickets are $25. For details, call 775-398-5400 or visit cargoreno.com.

Festival of Colors, April 20: Rancho San Rafael Park plays host to a this party featuring color throws, music, yoga, arts and crafts and more. The event runs from 12 to 5 p.m. at 1595 N. Reno Punk Rock Flea Market, April 20-21: It’s the return of this twice-a-year event that features loud bands and tons of local arts and crafts vendors. Headliners include national acts The Copywrights, Dwarves and Sammy Kay. Locals include Zoinks, Boss’ Daughter and Heterophobia. It takes place starting at 10 a.m. both days at El Sol, 1580 Hymer Ave. No. 120 in Sparks. Tickets are $5-$12 single day or $15 for both days. Details at rprfm.org.

The Quality of Life, April 21:  The Reno Little Theater hosts this play about a Midwestern churchgoing couple grappling with the loss of their daughter, and their left-leaning cousins dealing with cancer and the loss of their home due to wildfire. Lost Tapes From Major Musicians Are Out There. These Guys Find Them.

For decades, recordings left at studios have languished in storage rooms and basements. Master Tape Rescue, a company of two industry vets, is coming to save them.

A blond man reaches up and handles two boxes of recordings labeled “Louie Armstrong” located on shelves where many such tan boxes with lettering are visible.

Reporting from Los Angeles

In late 2020, Brian Kehew was working at the venerable Hollywood studio Sunset Sound when the owner asked him to help identify some tapes the Who had left behind. It was not an unusual request for Kehew, who has done tape transfers and mixes on hundreds of archival recording projects over the last 30 years, and serves as a tech and sometime backing musician for the band. He expected to find some overdubs or a safety copy of a master, nothing particularly important.

When he got his hands on the reels, he was shocked: The studio was sitting on all the original two-inch multitracks of the group’s 1975 album, “The Who by Numbers,” as well as previously unreleased songs from those sessions.

“I immediately contacted Pete Townshend, and we arranged to send the tapes back to England,” Kehew, a blond-haired Southern California native, said in a recent interview at his North Hollywood studio, which was lined with rare, vintage and obsolete tape machines. “The band had been looking for the tapes for years, but this was one place they hadn’t thought to check.”

For Kehew, a producer of Fiona Apple’s “Extraordinary Machine” and an expert on both the Beatles and Moog synthesizers, the recovery of the Who recordings underscored the fact that significant tapes “might be sitting in someone’s attic or barn or basement” and not where they belong, in a record company vault or an artist’s archive. “The obstacle to getting these tapes back in the right hands has always been the time and effort involved,” he said. “But what if there was a facile way to connect everyone that doesn’t involve a lot of hassle or red tape?”

The answer may be Master Tape Rescue , a company recently started by Kehew and his partner, Danny White, a fellow music industry veteran. The company acts as an archival matchmaking service of sorts, cataloging recordings from studios or private collections and then vetting and connecting rights holders with tape holders.

Over the past six months, as Kehew, 59, and White, 57, have canvassed the vaults of various studios and other holdings, they have discovered a wealth of fascinating material: previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix jam sessions, unknown Billie Holiday tapes, a trove of historic Chicago blues material, a large collection of professional concert recordings from artists including David Bowie, R.E.M. and Iggy Pop. “And it feels like that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” White said.

It was another historic discovery that brought White — a lanky, Indiana-born musician, studio owner and president of Sound Techniques, a recording console maker — into the project. In the late 2000s, he backed the Buddy Holly guitarist Tommy Allsup on tour. In 2009, inspired by the experience, he wrote a young adult novel, “The Last Rock and Roll Show,” about a pair of kids who discover lost Holly recordings. Life would imitate art when White was hired by the estate of a former Holly producer to assess its tape archive — and discovered more than 20 first-generation masters by the “Peggy Sue” singer.

Holly’s catalog was among the recordings reported to have been destroyed in the 2008 Universal Studios fire, which came to wide public knowledge in 2019. The find was major, showing that not everything was lost in the blaze. “It’s not all of Buddy’s masters,” White said, “but it’s a big chunk of his catalog, which is significant given the circumstances. And this was all sitting in a closet for years.”

In cases like the Who or Holly, there is real financial value in the recovered tapes. But most lost recordings, even ones from name acts, may be worth only a few hundred or thousand dollars. “Even though you have a tape, you don’t own the rights to what’s on it, so you can’t expect the moon,” Kehew said. “Labels might pay a small licensing fee use to a tape or track for a boxed set, sometimes they’ll buy it outright. Usually, they offer a finder’s fee or a storage fee — like, here’s a reward for preserving our tape all this time. It scales up and down with the artist, and how special the material is.”

But White said money isn’t the point: “We’re doing this more out of a sense of history, and hopefully help find some cool stuff that’s just been collecting dust for decades.”

NEARLY EVERY STUDIO that operated in the peak era of analog recording from the 1950s to the early 2000s has a locker, vault or room dedicated to housing tapes left behind by artists and labels.

Historically, finished album masters — held on a single quarter-inch tape reel, from which commercial copies would be manufactured — were considered the most valued asset. The multitracks — heavy, cumbersome two-inch reels of tape, containing the individual elements of the recording — would typically be collected and delivered to the label after a session. But inevitably a small percentage of tapes landed in the studio’s on-site storage, often forgotten completely by the artist and record company.

Paul Camarata, who owns Sunset Sound, watched his entire second-story space fill floor to ceiling with tapes like this, more than 1,500 at last count, from the big-band leader Harry James to the 1980s hitmakers Toto, before calling in Master Tape Rescue. “I’m always thinking we gotta get these tapes out of here,” he said. “But we’re in a strange quandary — we don’t own the tapes, and I would never just throw them away. We’ve just become an unwitting storage service.”

Over the years, record companies have “come down and scoured our archives hoping to find some gold,” he said. “But it’s kind of like leaving your car at the mechanic for 40 years and just expecting to pick it up one day.”

In 2010, Clay Blair began operating the Boulevard Recording Studio in Hollywood. It came with an illustrious history: Opened as Continental Recorders in 1966, it morphed into Producer’s Workshop in the 1970s (turning out projects by Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan) and eventually became Westbeach Recorders, the pop-punk stronghold whose clients included Blink-182, Rancid and the Offspring. When Blair took over the space, he inherited a disused echo chamber that had been turned into a tape storage.

“There’s at least a couple hundred tapes in there that go all the way back to the ’60s,” said Blair, who is also working with Master Tape Rescue. “There are recordings by Liberace and Engelbert Humperdinck, a score for an Evel Knievel film, we found a Jerry Garcia tape from the ’70s, a soundtrack he did that’s never been released. Just the other day, we found the two-inch reels from Concrete Blonde’s hit ‘Joey.’ There’s all kinds of stuff hiding in these studios that nobody has any idea about.”

Still, numerous recording facilities that have been sold or closed over the years simply threw out their archives. The most famous example is Olympic Studios in London, which in 1987 took its entire tape inventory — including incredibly valuable multitrack recordings by bands like the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin — and placed them in a dumpster. Enterprising collectors salvaged as many reels as possible; some were reunited with the artists, others turned up as bootlegs.

Historically, multitrack recordings were seen as less valuable than finished master tapes. Back in the 1960s, bands would often roll back over recorded performances for fresh takes, or labels would bulk erase reels after a session and reuse the tape for other projects. “A lot of great, interesting recordings got lost that way,” said Andrew Sandoval, a reissue producer who has specialized in catalog work for ’60s groups like the Monkees and the Beach Boys.

Sandoval said that even major artists of the era, like the Kinks, have very few of their early multis. “You’re never going to hear alternate takes of classics like ‘You Really Got Me’ or ‘All of the Day,’” he said. “None of those things exist.”

During the 1970s and ’80s, multitracks were haphazardly stored, organized and prized, even by major labels. It wasn’t uncommon to walk into a place like Coast Recording Equipment Supply, a pro audio shop in Hollywood, and find used reels being sold for recording that contained multitrack masters by bands like the Doors.

It wasn’t until the CD era and the explosion of deep-dive compilations and boxed sets in the late ’80s and early ’90s that record companies started to fully realize the value of their multitracks. “When you get into the re-marketing of music and creating reissues, the first thing a label asks is: ‘Is there something new here?’” Sandoval said. “In order to find or create something new, you usually need to go back to the multitracks — that’s your biggest source of alternate takes, outtakes and unreleased material.”

Today, multitracks arguably hold even more value thanks to the rise of remix projects, the development of immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, and even TV, film and commercial sync opportunities, which often require use of the original recording elements.

“The ability to recast an artist’s music, to present it in a new way, usually depends on the multitracks,” said John Jackson, the longtime Sony/Legacy A&R executive. Now running his own consultancy, advising Billy Joel, Rosanne Cash and the estate of AC/DC’s Bon Scott, he noted that “if you don’t have the multitracks or have a plan for the multitracks, you’re not recognizing and celebrating the value of that artist’s music fully.”

THERE’S NO QUESTION that the vagaries of the music business have claimed plenty of important recordings over the years.

In February, the 146-track boxed set “Written in Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos” won best historical album at the Grammys. Chronicling the tunesmiths behind the iconic Memphis soul label, it was a 20-year passion project for its producer, Cheryl Pawelski. A former catalog executive at Capitol and Warner Music who now runs her own label, Omnivore, Pawelski said the original tapes that make up the Stax box had actually been thrown out years earlier.

“Fortunately, before they got rid of the tapes sometime in the ’90s, the publisher that owned the material transferred it all to DAT,” said Pawelski, referring to the now outdated digital tape format. “That’s because a single DAT could hold 90 or 120 minutes — it was a space saving measure.”

Pawelski knows that “Written in Their Soul” is a feel-good story in a business often filled with dispiriting tales of lost history. “God knows what’s been thrown out. Just thinking about the stuff that probably wound up in landfills in Memphis or Chicago, it makes me very sad,” she said. “As music lovers, as reissue producers, we’re chasing something that’s very ephemeral in what is essentially a business environment. And I think a lot of music has gotten the raw end of those business dealings.”

Corporate neglect and studio closures aren’t the only reasons tapes get lost or go missing; there have been more nefarious forces at work as well. Jackson, who spent years overseeing Sony/Legacy’s work on the Elvis Presley catalog, noted that even the biggest artists have not been immune from having their recordings stolen.

The Presley archivist Ernst Jorgensen spent “decades putting Elvis’s whole tape collection back together,” Jackson said. “And a lot of times that involved someone saying, ‘Meet me at this motel behind Graceland and I’ll sell you the multitracks of this session.’”

A few years ago, Kehew worked on a reissue of a 20-times-platinum LP by a big major-label act from the 1990s. He noticed the multitracks were not in the label’s vault, but since those tapes weren’t needed for the project, he thought little of it. A few months later, he was approached by someone who had inherited a store of tapes and wanted him to assess the contents. There, among the mostly worthless reels, were “the multitracks for this 20-million-selling album,” Kehew said, “just sitting in a dusty garage in downtown L.A., next to some boots and a bunch of oil cans.”

Someone had checked out the tapes from the label without a signature, he said, later abandoning them. “The label was very happy to have them back. The band probably never even knew they were missing.”

Sandoval believes the untapped holdings of studios and private collections could produce a bounty in the coming years. “There’s recordings people have been sitting on for one reason or another,” he said. “As those folks pass away, and their families find and inherit the tapes, that stuff is finally going to surface.”

Kehew and White are counting on that and hope to streamline the process through their efforts with Master Tape Rescue. “I do believe there are hundreds of studios all over the world that have tape vaults that are worth exploring,” Kehew said. “Or that there are producers or engineers, or estates, who might have material of real value for artists or labels. A lot of stuff is still out there — it’s just a matter of finding it.”

2024 Masters leaderboard, winner: Scottie Scheffler's patience begets second green jacket in three years

Scheffler displayed a disciplined approach that, combined with extraordinary ball striking, turned sunday into an epic coronation at augusta national golf club.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Three straight birdies at the turn made the inevitable reality as Scottie Scheffler pulled away from a packed leaderboard at the 2024 Masters to become the 10th man in history to claim two green jackets in a three-year span. The 27-year-old Scheffler, spending his 82nd straight week as the No. 1 golfer in the world, left no doubt Sunday that what was already known is indeed true: every golf tournament he plays goes through him.

Scheffler finished 11 under -- four strokes clear of the field -- after entering the 88th playing of the Masters as an overwhelming favorite. He did nothing to dissuade his supporters over the first three rounds, either leading or staying within a single stroke after 18, 36 and 54 holes entering Sunday's finale.

Once a two-stroke lead after three holes became a four-way tie entering the turn Sunday, Scheffler flipped a switch and never looked back. He added to that three-birdie stretch from Nos. 8-10 by scoring three more on the 13th, 14th and 16th to keep Ludvig Åberg (-7) -- finishing second while playing in his first career major championship -- at arm's length.

"It's a difficult golf course to close out a win on," Scheffler explained. "You can't play overly defensive. ... You have to play to the correct spot and hit really good golf shots. I did that to the best of my abilities today and was fortunately able to hit some really key shots and make some nice birdies there on the back nine. Really, from hole 8 on, I played really, really nice golf."

Scheffler on Sunday became the 18th man to win two Masters and the first to do so over a three-year span since Bubba Watson (2012, 2014). He is also the fourth-youngest two-time Masters champion and the eighth golfer to win the first two major championships of his career at Augusta National.

With the 2024 tournament being his fifth Masters appearance, Scheffler is the second-fastest to have green jackets take up two hangers in his closet, the quickest to the achievement in 88 years (Horton Smith, third appearance, 1936).

Despite how simple Scheffler can make the game look, this Masters was anything but easy for the top name in the game. His iron play wasn't at his usually excellent level for most of the week, his tenor was tested plenty -- his pregnant wife and best friend not by his side like usual , instead at home days or weeks away from giving labor -- but when the correct shots in the correct moments were called upon, Scheffler answered.

Fighting his swing early on Sunday, Scheffler found himself in a dog fight with Åberg, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa all nipping at his heels. Scrambling saves were required to maintain his lead as he missed greens both short and long.

An uneasy feeling, Scheffler's short game took matters into its own hands. At its best when the tournament is often its tensest, his soft touch produced a stunner on the third from the bunker for his first birdie of the day.

His pursuers purred and had their moments, though. Åberg turned in 33 to touch the lead, Morikawa answered a Scheffler birdie on No. 8 with one of his own, and Homa lashed a mighty approach into 10.

The peloton was formed with 10 holes to play, and the thought of four of the best players in the world jostling through the second nine at Augusta National on Sunday raced through the minds of many. Unfortunately his peers, Scheffler raced away from the three-player pile up.

First, it was Morikawa who couldn't keep up as the two-time major champion needed two from the greenside bunker on No. 9 and ultimately carded a double bogey. Another followed on the 11th when his second found a watery grave.

Åberg had crashed just before them with the same fatal mistake. The Masters rookie battled back, it was too little too late. He ultimately became the third debutant in the last five years to finish runner-up.

Homa stood as Scheffler's last real threat as he sent a prayer into the air on Amen Corner's treacherous par-3 12th. It wasn't answered as Homa's ball traveled a yard too long, took a firm bounce and found a bush. Another double bogey ensued.

From a pack of four, only Scheffler was left standing.

While others took the bait and got greedy, Scheffler displayed discipline. While others tried to tame a brutally difficult Augusta National, Scheffler stayed patient. While others' emotions got the best of them, Scheffler remained calm.

Scheffler's superpower, his mental game, shined through when it mattered most. His ball striking gets praised and his short game is respected, but Scheffler's greatest strength has nothing to do with the club in his hand and everything to do with the mind of the person wielding it. The one now donning a second green jacket in three years.

Youngest two-time Masters champions

2024 masters leaderboard breakdown.

2. Ludvig Åberg (-7): After starting his Masters career with a 73, Åberg fired three straight under-par rounds including the only one in the 60s on Friday. A member of the penultimate pairing on Sunday, the Masters rookie felt it on the greens early. He curled in a ticklish birdie on No. 2 and another on No. 9 to head into the second nine with a share of the lead. Getting too aggressive down the hill into the 11th green, the young Swede's approach found the water and led to a double bogey -- his only dropped shots of the day. Åberg bounced back with two birdies over his next three holes to apply a smidge of pressure on Scheffler, but by then, the damage was done. The major debutant will learn from this mistake and be better for it. For now, he'll have to settle for a solo second.

T3. Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood (-4): Both Morikawa and Homa looked strong early. The two-time major champion did not miss a single approach shot across his first eight holes but was unable to connect on the greens. He stood square with Scheffler through this stretch of the golf course, but greed got the best of him on No. 9 when he tried to get too much out of his approach ultimately leading to the first of two double bogeys in a three-hole stretch.

Meanwhile, Homa was a surgeron around Augusta National. Picking and choosing his spots with care, the 33-year-old's birdie on the long 10th meant he had jumped into a share of the lead. He may have been too cautious when all is said is done as he erred long on the 12th, which led to his double bogey and refused to hit driver on the par-5 13th electing to play it as a three-shot hole. Still, it represents Homa's best major result and the return of major Morikawa.

"Greed got the best of me," Morikawa said. "Nine, can't miss it over there and can't leave it in the bunker. Eleven, just tried to hit too perfect of a shot. It's not like at that point I was trying to press. I knew where I stood. Yeah, it's just can't do that. In the past, I haven't done it, but kind of where the game's at. You kind of find your little stride. We put a lot of pieces of the puzzle together this week, but after watching Scottie this week, I know what to do if I really want to close this gap on what he's doing and how impressive he's playing."

T6. Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau (-2): After shooting the round of the tournament (65) on Thursday, DeChambeau carded three straight over-par rounds. The former U.S. Open champion fared well in the difficult conditions on Friday, but he lost his touch on the greens over the weekend. Remaining patient for the first half of the tournament, his aggression got the better of him late on Saturday and sunk his Masters chances. He fought back nicely with his hole-out on 18 in Round 3 and a couple birdies in the middle of his first nine on Sunday, but it was all for not. DeChambeau's T6 is his first finish inside the top 20 in his Masters career.

Take it in, Scottie Scheffler!

That is his sixth birdie in his last nine holes. Scheffler tacks one on 16 and his lead is four with two holes to play. The green jacket might as well be his.

3 up 3 to go

Scottie Scheffler makes par on No. 15 to remain at 10 under and three clear of Ludvig Aberg. Three pars should secure him his second Masters title in three years.

Scheffler birdies 14

He is up three with four to go. He taps in his fifth birdie in the last seven holes and now heads to the par-5 15th. Aberg was unable to go for the green in two after a wayward drive and needs to put a wedge close.

Aberg keeps fighting

The young Swede has rattled off two straight birdies to get within two of Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 just made birdie on 13 to get to 9 under. It looks like it will come down to these two as Max Homa sits four adrift at 5 under with only four holes to play.
