Viktor Hovland played the best golf of his life in the final two weeks of the PGA Tour season, and it paid off Sunday with the biggest trophy of his career — a FedEx Cup title along with the $18 million bonus.

Staked to a six-shot lead, Hovland didn’t flinch under a relentless challenge from Xander Schauffele . The 25-year-old Norwegian stayed on the attack and closed with a seven-under 63 for a five-shot victory in the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Hovland capped off his best season with three victories. Even more staggering is that he played his final tournaments — the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields and the Tour Championship — in 36-under par.

Schauffele made him work for that $18 million and got to within three shots with seven holes to play. Hovland ended the suspense with a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole, and he put Schauffele away with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Schauffele and Hovland put on a superb show. Playing in the last group, on a day that was delayed nearly two hours by thunderstorms, they had the best scores of the day.

Hovland was the No. 2 seed going into the Tour Championship, meaning he started at eight-under par. Hovland posted a 19-under 261 — the same score as Schauffele, who started the tournament at three-under par.

Schauffele did everything he could. He was six shots behind when he left East Lake on Saturday evening, knowing that his only hope was to put as much pressure on Hovland as he could over the front nine.

Schauffele shot 30. Hovland nearly matched him birdie for birdie, posting a 31 that included a key 15-foot par save on No. 2 after the two-hour delay from thunderstorms that slightly softened the East Lake turf.

Schauffele, for all his California chill, was simply relentless. He holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-three 11th hole and followed with a 12-foot birdie on the 12th, cutting the lead to three shots with seven holes to play.

It felt like the margin was even smaller considering how well Schauffele was playing, and Hovland having missed three birdie chances from 10 feet or closer.

The putt that mattered came at the 14th, the toughest hole at East Lake. Hovland came up short of the green, about 100 feet from the flag, and his pitch was weak and stopped just inside 25 feet from the hole.

He poured it in the heart and pumped his fist stronger than he had all day. The clincher was another pure short iron, this one to 10 feet on the 16th for birdie. At that point, the engraver went to work on the silver FedEx Cup trophy.

Now it’s a matter of how his peers judge his season. The PGA Tour player of the year was thought to be a two-man race between Masters champion Jon Rahm and his four wins and Scottie Scheffler with The Players Championship among his two wins and the No. 1 ranking from his remarkable consistency.

Hovland ended the season with wins at the Memorial and two FedEx Cup playoff events, including the one that mattered.

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark won the B-Flight, closing with a 65 to finish third, 11 shots behind. That was worth a $5 million bonus. Rory McIlroy had a 65 to finish fourth and collect $4 million, while Patrick Cantlay (66) was alone in fifth to earn $3 million.

The next time Hovland and Schauffele meet is for no prize money at all — the Ryder Cup in Rome in a month’s time.

Viktor Hovland knew he was playing the best golf of his life. Staked to a six-shot lead Sunday in the Tour Championship, he figured a steady diet of fairways and greens and plenty of pars would be the safest route to winning the FedEx Cup.

Xander Schauffele made him change his plans.

And then the 25-year-old Norwegian star performed even better.

Hovland didn't flinch under a relentless challenge from Schauffele, matching birdies at East Lake in Atlanta from start to finish until he capped off the best two weeks of his career with his biggest trophy — a FedEx Cup title and the $18 million US bonus.

He closed with a 7-under 63, the lowest score by the winner in Tour Championship history, and won the Tour Championship by five shots over Schauffele.

"The game plan was to try to play as boring as possible — play it like Tiger back in the day when he would post a 69 or 70 in a major championship and walk away with the victory," Hovland said.

This was anything but boring golf — Hovland with a 63, Schauffele with a 62. A six-shot lead was cut to three shots on the back nine until Hovland poured in a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole that made an already steep hill all but impossible for Schauffele to scale.

"What he was doing today was very special," Hovland said. "It made this day more stressful than it should have been."

So ended a season when Hovland won for the first time in the United States at the Memorial, had a multiple-win season, and then capped it off with two weeks of such sublime golf that he won the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields and the Tour Championship at 36-under par.

Schauffele made him work for that $18 million, firing at flags from the opening hole. He got to within three shots with seven holes to play and had momentum on his side. And then Hovland ended the suspense with that 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole, and he put Schauffele away with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Schauffele and Hovland put on a superb show. Playing in the final group, on a day that was delayed nearly two hours by thunderstorms, they had the best scores of the day. The next best score was a 65 from players who never had a chance at winning.

"I thought 62 would have let me get close to him," Schauffele said. "He played unbelievably well. He made important putts and he's just played like a champ."

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., finished 25th at 2 under, while Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., was 26th at 1 under.

It was the second time in four years that no one scored better than Schauffele, and he left Atlanta without a trophy to show for it. Such is the nature of the FedEx Cup finale, and the importance of a strong season and a big performance in the two post-season events leading up to the Tour Championship.

"I'll hold my head up high," Schauffele said. "It was the most fun I had losing in quite some time. It's such a weird feeling. I shot 62. I lost by five. Just kudos to Hovi. He played unbelievably well the last few weeks to get himself into this position and to really just put a cherry on top for himself and his team."

Schauffele did everything he could. He was six shots behind when he left East Lake on Saturday evening, knowing that his only hope was to put as much pressure on Hovland as he could over the front nine.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Megan Khang beat Jin Young Ko with a par in a playoff for her first LPGA win, and Andrea Lee rallied to clinch a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team at the CPKC Women’s Open on Sunday.

After struggling most of the afternoon, Khang made a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club to force the playoff. Ko hit her tee shot on the first playoff hole into the hazard left of the fairway and took a double bogey after a penalty shot.

The 25-year-old Khang hit her second shot to the fringe left of the pin on 18 and two-putted for her first win in eight years on the LPGA Tour, giving her caddie a giant huge after it dropped. She shot 2-over 74 in the final round to finish at 9-under 279.

Lee needed to finish 13th to earn one of the seven automatic qualifying spots for the U.S. team. She just missed a birdie on 18 to shoot 70 in the final round, leaving her 11th at 2 under with several players still on the course.

After a nearly hourlong wait, Lee tied for 13th, earning a spot in the Sept. 22-24 matches in Spain.

Lexi Thompson earned the eighth U.S. Solheim Cup spot based on world rankings despite missing the cut by eight shots.

EUROPEAN TOUR

PRAGUE (AP) — Todd Clements came through a bunched field Sunday to win the Czech Masters for his first European tour title, closing with a bogey-free round of 9-under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Matt Wallace.

Wallace missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole at the Albatross Golf Resort that would have forced a playoff. He shot 67.

Clements, who turns 27 on Tuesday, graduated from the Challenge Tour last year and is ranked No. 394. He hadn’t finished in the top 20 in any previous event this season, but shot in the 60s every round at the Czech Masters.

Clements finished on 22-under 266.

Nicolai Hojgaard (69) finish third. The six-way-tie for fourth included Robert MacIntyre of Scotland (66) and Ludvig Aberg of Sweden (66), both of whom could be part of Europe’s team for the Ryder Cup next month.

MacIntyre’ strengthened his spot in third place on the European points list. Qualifying ends next week at the European Masters in Switzerland. Aberg, a 23-year-old Swede who only turned pro in June and was playing in his first European tour event, is under consideration for a captain’s pick.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

GRAND BLANC, Mich. (AP) — Vijay Singh won The Ally Challenge for his first PGA Tour Champions title in nearly five years, mainly because of a five-putt triple bogey by Paul Goydos.

Singh closed with a 4-under 68, and he walked off the 18th green at Warwick Hills thinking he would need some help from Goydos, who was in the group behind and had a one-shot lead. Singh didn’t realize the help already had been delivered.

Goydos was leading by one and had about an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole. He left that about 3 feet short. He rammed the par putt by the hole. He missed the 3-foot bogey putt. And then he missed again from about 4 feet and then tapped in for triple bogey.

Goydos closed with a par for a 71, two shots behind. Singh finished at 14-under 202, one shot ahead of Jeff Maggert.

Steve Stricker, playing for the first time in a month, closed with a 68 and tied for eighth to match his worst finish of the year. He has five wins — three of them senior majors — and five runner-up finishes.

KORN FERRY TOUR

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Chan Kim closed with a 7-under 64 to win the Albertsons Boise Open for his second straight win on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Kim needed a strong closing round to hold off David Kocher, who birdied his last hole for a 59 and finished two shots behind. It was the third 59 on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, and the sixth sub-60 round in professional golf in 2023.

Kim, the Hawaii native who played at Arizona State, previously had eight wins on the Japan Golf Tour. Now he has back-to-back titles on the Korn Ferry Tour, and he already is assured of a PGA Tour card for 2024.

Starting with a two-shot lead, Kim opened par-birdie-eagle to seize control. The challenge came late in the round when Kocher had seven birdies over the final eight holes of the front nine, made eagle on the par-5 16th and finished with a birdie for his 59 to close to within one shot.

Kim made birdie on the 16th for a two-shot cushion with two to play, and he finished with two pars for a four-day total of 28-under 256.

tour championship and fedex cup

ATLANTA – Rory McIlroy pulled off an improbable comeback, rallying from six strokes back to knock off World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler with a final-round 4-under 66 at East Lake Golf Club to win the Tour Championship.

McIlroy became the first player to win the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour’s season-long competition, three times. He did it in dramatic fashion on Sunday, authoring the largest final-round comeback in Tour Championship history and finishing at 21 under, one stroke better than Scheffler and Sungjae Im. McIlroy said he wasn’t giving himself much of a chance to claim the top prize of $18 million at the start of the round, figuring he’d need to shoot 61 or 62.

“What a week, what a day. I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of this today,” McIlroy said. “I feel sort of bad that I pipped him to the post. He’s a hell of a competitor and an even better guy. It was an honor and a privilege to battle with him today. I’m sure there will be many more. I told him we’re 1 all in Georgia. He got the Masters and I got this.”

The Northern Irishman spotted Scheffler six strokes in the staggered-start scoring system implemented at the Tour Championship. McIlroy gave him an even bigger head start by pulling his opening tee shot of the tournament on Thursday out of bounds and made triple bogey at the first and bogey at the second to fall 10 strokes behind.

“I got off to the worst start possible,” said McIlroy, who said he thought of South Korea’s Tom Kim, who opened the Wyndham Championship with a quadruple bogey and went on to win.

“It just shows you anything’s possible, even when you’re a few behind or a few in front in the tournament. Anything can happen,” said McIlroy, who rebounded to shoot 67 on Thursday. “I’m going to remember this week mostly for that.”

He chipped away at Scheffler’s lead with another 67 on Friday and then made his move on Saturday. After the third round was suspended for the day due to lightning, McIlroy returned Sunday morning and made birdies on his final two holes to cap off a round of 7-under 63.

“It’s a perfect way to end the round,” McIlroy said.

Still Scheffler, who made four birdies in his final six holes of the third round, entered the final round with a six-stroke cushion. It disappeared quickly.

“Everybody talks about how fun it is to win. It’s not,” NBC’s Paul Azinger said. “It’s the hardest thing in the world to do. It’s only after the fact that it’s fun.”

On a bright, steamy day, McIlroy stumbled again at the first hole but bounced back with four birdies in a five-hole stretch beginning at the third. Trying for his fifth win of the season, Scheffler struggled to three bogeys in his first six holes.

“This is a disaster,” Azinger said after Scheffler flubbed a flop shot into a greenside bunker at No. 6. “It’s hard to watch this happen to a guy of this pedigree, this caliber. This was always going to be a hard day for him, a hard weekend, and he’s really feeling the heat now.”

McIlroy made birdie one hole later to tie for the lead. But Scheffler wouldn’t go down without a fight. He stuck his approach to 5 feet at No. 8 to regain the lead. McIlroy knotted the tournament again with a short birdie at No. 12, but surrendered a stroke when he failed to get up and down at 14. He got the stroke back in dramatic fashion, sinking a 32-foot birdie putt one hole later and sending the pro-McIlroy gallery into a frenzy. For the day, McIlroy was the top putter, gaining nearly four strokes on the field on the greens.

The lead belonged to McIlroy one hole later when his chip from behind the green hit the flagstick and stopped 7 feet away. McIlroy coolly canned the par putt to stay 21 under and Scheffler missed from 9 feet.

“That was a combination of skill and luck,” McIlroy said of his par at 16, which knocked Scheffler from the lead for the first time all tournament.

Scheffler failed to birdie either of the last two holes and closed in 3-over 73, which tied for the highest score of the day among the 29-man field, and his six-stroke cushion matched losing the largest lead going into the final round in Tour history.

“I really fought hard today,” Scheffler said. “Rory just played a really good round of golf. He made some key putts there at the end, and he definitely deserved to win.”

Despite a double bogey at 14 when he duffed a flop shot, the 24-year-old South Korean Im birdied two of his last four holes to shoot 66 and concluded his most successful season to date with quite the payday. He took home $5.75 million for finishing tied for second.

“My goal this week was to finish top 5, and to be finishing this high up is very unexpected,” Im said. “I’m glad how everything came out together.”

So, too, was McIlroy, who previously won the 2016 Deutsche Bank Championship after being 4-over through three holes and overcoming a six-stroke final-round deficit there as well. Why does he thrive in the role of chaser?

“Because I think out of anyone in the field,” he said, “I care the least about the money.”

Patrick Cantlay posts 'a huge win,' capturing FedEx Cup in dramatic fashion at the Tour Championship

  • Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Patrick Cantlay was on the verge of losing his 2-shot lead on one hole, with nothing less than the FedEx Cup, the $15 million prize and his newfound reputation as "Patty Ice" on the line.

He was clutch as ever in his biggest moment on Sunday in the Tour Championship.

Cantlay made a nervy, 6-foot bogey putt on the 17th hole to stay a shot ahead of Jon Rahm going to the par-5 18th hole at East Lake. Then Cantlay hit his longest drive of the week -- 361 yards down the middle -- with Rahm already in the fairway.

The final shot was a 6-iron from 218 yards to 12 feet -- the closest of anyone all day -- that all but clinched the 1-shot victory, the FedEx Cup and perhaps even PGA Tour Player of the Year.

"It was the best shot I hit all week," Cantlay said.

Cantlay outlasted Bryson DeChambeau in a six-hole playoff at the BMW Championship. One week later, he held off the No. 1 player in the world with his 1-shot win over Rahm in the Tour Championship.

"Felt like a huge win, and it was," Cantlay said.

The nickname "Patty Ice" surfaced only last week, and it's starting to stick.

"To me, it just means cool under pressure, and I think that suits my personality really well," said Cantlay, who never changed his expression until a big smile when he tapped in for birdie and a 1-under 69, waving his cap to thousands of fans around the green.

It seems to suit his game too.

Rahm couldn't get enough putts to fall. The U.S. Open champion stayed close all day, and his shot into the 18th was equally special. It landed right next to the hole on its second bounce, rolling through to light rough just off the green.

Cantlay expected him to chip in for eagle "because that's what he does." Rahm narrowly missed and shot 68, allowing Cantlay a safe two-putt for the win.

The triumph was worth $15 million -- $14 million in cash and $1 million deferred -- for the 29-year-old Californian whose rise in golf was slowed by a back injury that kept him out for three years and nearly ended his career.

Now, he has stamped himself among the elite in golf, boosted by the FedEx Cup postseason.

"It's fantastic," Cantlay said. "It's such a great honor because it's all year. I played really consistent all year and caught fire at the end. There's a lot of satisfaction considering all the work I've put in my whole life."

Rahm, who started the tournament 4 shots behind and went into the final day 2 shots back, never caught Cantlay. Rahm never let him breathe easy, either.

Cantlay took a 2-shot lead with an approach to 6 feet for birdie on the 17th hole and then nearly lost it all.

He drove to the right on the 17th, clipping a tree and dropping down into deep rough, and then he hit a flyer over the green and the gallery. His pitch back to the green came up short and into more deep rough, and he had to make a 6-footer to save bogey and stay ahead.

That set up the final hole, where Rahm could only match birdies with Cantlay.

"I gave it my all," Rahm said. "It wasn't enough."

Rahm was bogey-free over the last 28 holes, but he cashed in on only two birdies. He tied with Kevin Na for the low 72-hole score of the tournament at 14-under 266. They will split points toward the world ranking.

Cantlay started at 10-under par as the No. 1 seed and finished at 21 under.

"Patrick played great golf, and he was four shots ahead of me [at the start]. And even though I might have been the better man over the week, he earned it," Rahm said. "That up-and-down after missing from 17, the second shot from 18 to almost make it is even more impressive.

"I think you can say he won this."

Rahm earned the $5 million consolation prize for finishing second in the FedEx Cup, while Na (67) picked up $4 million. Justin Thomas (70) birdied the last hole to finish fourth, which was worth $3 million.

"It felt really weird to have this feeling of disappointment of not winning on a day you are making $5 million," Rahm said.

Cantlay started the postseason by saying he did not like the format of the Tour Championship, with the staggered start depending on a players' FedEx Cup position and no official victory for the lowest score at the Tour Championship.

He's still not a fan, even if it worked out in his favor. All Cantlay could do was play the hand he was dealt, and he played his cards perfectly.

Even more satisfying was the manner in which he won the past two events -- the six-hole playoff against DeChambeau when he made one clutch putt after another and delivering the key moment with the FedEx Cup on the line against Rahm.

"It's exactly why I play golf. I play golf so I can be in those moments against the best players in the world," Cantlay said. "It's why I practice so hard. It's why I'm in love with the game, because it's that great vehicle for competition. It maybe makes it a little sweeter knowing that the guys I played against are the best players in the world."

Cantlay won for the fourth time this season -- no one else won more than twice. One of those victories was the Memorial, where Rahm had a six-shot lead after 54 holes and had to withdraw because of a positive COVID-19 test result.

That figures to make Cantlay a front-runner for PGA Tour Player of the Year, with Rahm (U.S. Open title, No. 1 ranking) and Collin Morikawa (British Open, World Golf Championship title) also likely to be on the ballot.

Rahm won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average.

FedEx Cup Playoffs: Tour Championship starting positions for all 30 golfers

The Tour Championship, the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, begins this week in Atlanta. Here are the starting positions for all 30 players.

Getty Images

The PGA Tour season, at long last, is coming to a close. All that’s left is the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale in the Tour Championship, where (wait for it) $75 million will be up for grabs.

So, how does it all work? We’re glad you asked. We could all use a refresher.

The Tour Championship uses a stroke-based bonus system based on the current FedEx Cup standings , meaning not everyone enters the tournament on the same playing field.

This has been the formula for the past four years, as the Tour changed the format beginning in 2019. The old format crowned a Tour Championship winner and a FedEx Cup Playoffs champion (although sometimes it was the same person), and keeping track of essentially two different tournaments — for players and fans — was, well, confusing.

So now there’s just one champion, who, along with winning the Tour Championship, will also be the FedEx Cup Playoffs champ.

The leader of the FedEx Cup points race starts the Tour Championship, held at East Lake in Atlanta, at 10 under. The top five in the standings is staggered (2nd at eight under, 3rd at seven under, 4th at six under and 5th at five under), and the last 25 players in the field are more bunched (i.e. places 6-10 start at four under, and so on).

Here’s where everyone will start for the playoffs.

Tour Championship starting scores

10 under: Scottie Scheffler Eight under: Viktor Hovland Seven under: Rory McIlroy Six under: Jon Rahm Five under: Lucas Glover Four under: Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick Three under: Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele Two under: Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, Si Woo Kim One under: Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day Even: Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, Sepp Straka

max homa

Max Homa’s heckler incident illustrated risky future for PGA Tour, gambling

But just because Scheffler has a two-stroke lead over second place — and a much larger lead over others — doesn’t mean he’s bound to run away with this.

Take last year, for example, when Scheffler held the same spot on the leaderboard but was eventually beaten by Rory McIlroy, who started the tournament six shots back and even rebounded from a triple bogey on his first hole of the week to win the whole thing.

You can follow the action from 1-6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s broadcast is 1-3 p.m. on Golf Channel and 3-7 p.m. on CBS, and Sunday’s final round is 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on CBS.

2023 FedEx Cup standings, schedule, PGA Tour leaderboard, purse, prize money for FedEx Cup Playoffs

Your one-stop shop for everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 fedex cup playoffs.

fedex-cup-fans.jpg

Two FedEx Cup Playoffs events are in the books, and Lucas Glover and Viktor Hovland have left their mark. Glover took down the top 70 on the PGA Tour in Memphis at the FedEx St. Jude Championship while Hovland shot a 61 to race past the top 50 in the playoffs at the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields. As a result, both have moved into the top five of the FedEx Cup standings as the Tour heads to East Lake for the Tour Championship.

The most obvious changes to the playoffs this year is the field size. While 30 has always been the number at the Tour Championship, the St. Jude Championship was reduced from top 125 to top 70 this year and the BMW bumped down to the top 50. These smaller fields have made the bubble watch for the following event even more interesting than normal as the top 50 in this year's FedEx Cup automatically qualify for the eight small-field signature events on next year's PGA Tour schedule . As noted earlier, the top 30 move on to the Tour Championship.

2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs schedule

All three events are 72-hole, stroke-play tournaments, though the fields gradually get smaller as the playoffs roll on. The points change, too, as everything is quadrupled. During regular season events, most winners receive 500 FedEx Cup points for finishing first at tournaments (in a handful of events, 600 points went to first place). The winners of the first two FedEx Cup Playoffs events will instead receive 2,000 points each. The point boost goes for every slot on the leaderboard: 300 for second becomes 1,200 and so on.

Only four golfers -- Rahm, Scheffler, McIlroy and Max Homa -- surpassed the 2,000-point total during the entire regular season , which means the FedEx Cup standings have already have shifted quite a bit, although those four are all still in the top six in the rankigns Winners are disproportionately rewarded and deservedly so given this is the postseason.

This provides the opportunity for golfers -- like Glover -- to go on a hot streak and rocket up the FedEx Cup standings. After not even sniffing the top 25 in the FedEx Cup standings all year, he is suddenly in the top five with one events to go. Regardless of what else happens, everyone in the top 10 of the FedEx Cup rankings is in prime position at the Tour Championship at East Lake. Similar to other sports, now that the postseason has begun, almost anything can happen.

2023 FedEx Cup standings

Again, there was not too much movement at the top of the standings. Part of that is because Rahm and Scheffler built a massive 1-2 lead in the regular season, and part of it is because most of the top 10 players in the FedEx Cup standings have played well early in the playoffs.

Here's a look at the top 30 going into the Tour Championship.

The scores are set for the Tour Championship, and the top five have an extraordinary lead on the bottom five. Beating Scottie Scheffler is difficult enough. Now you have to do so with him up by five or seven or 10 on you to start the week.

Every winner of the Tour Championship in this current format has started Tour Championship week at 4 under or better, and two of the eventual winners have started at 10 under. It's unlikely that anyone outside of the top 10 here will win this tournament and the $18 million first prize.

2023 Tour Championship format

Heading into the Tour Championship inside the top five or top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings is important because of how scoring is dispersed. Whoever is first in the FedEx Cup standings after the BMW Championship starts the Tour Championship at 10 under, and the event is played under normal scoring conditions from there. Second starts at 8 under and so on (see full numbers below).

With so much money at stake (again, $18 million for first place), those margins become more meaningful than even a normal week.

  • 6th-10th: -4
  • 11th-15th: -3
  • 16th-20th: -2
  • 21st-25th: -1

The numbers are startling for the finale. The winner of the Tour Championship receive $18 million. If you just make into the final FedEx Cup Playoff event, you're guaranteed $500,000. Here's a look at what the lucrative top 10 will look like at the Tour Championship.

  • 1st: $18 million
  • 2nd: $6.5 million
  • 3rd: $5 million
  • 4th: $4 million
  • 5th: $3 million
  • 6th: $2.5 million
  • 7th: $2 million
  • 8th: $1.5 million
  • 9th: $1.25 million
  • 10th: $1 million

Last year, McIlroy overcame a six-stroke deficit at the start of the week and a five-stroke deficit at the start of the final day to defeat Scheffler by one and swipe an additional $11.5 million from him in the process.

The world’s top-ranked golfer is dominating the PGA Tour. Scottie Scheffler won the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Monday morning following a weather delay and restart late Sunday—his fourth win in his last five starts. He added a tartan plaid jacket to his second green jacket at The Masters , which followed wins at The Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational .

Scheffler carded an 8 under par 63 on Saturday to take a 1-stroke lead over Sepp Straka and 2 strokes ahead of his final round playing partner at The Masters, Collin Morikwa. Both those players shot a 1 over par 72 in the final round to fall back.

Scheffler entered Sunday’s final round as the -165 favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook to win the tournament with Straka and Morikawa both +650 and Masters runner-up Ludvig Aberg +1100 sitting 3 shots behind. Scottie was +450 to win at the start of the RBC Heritage .

Golf’s 27-year-old superstar was 3 under par through 11 holes Sunday and 19 under par with a 4-shot lead over six players when play was suspended before resuming 2 1/2 hours later at 7 p.m. ET. Scheffler played three more holes and took a 5-stroke lead into Sunday evening as play was suspended for darkness.

Early Monday he finished off the $20 million signature event with a 3-shot victory at 19 under par to earn another $3.6 million and take his season total to over $18 million. His bogey on the 18th hole ended a streak of 68 consecutive holes at par or better. Sahith Theegala finished second while Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark T3 and Justin Thomas part of a 4-way tie for fifth.

Justin Ray, golf Lead Data Analyst, added a number of posts on X to show Scheffler’s run of dominance. Beyond Scottie being the last player since Tiger Woods in 2008 to win four times in a five-start stretch on the PGA Tour, this post about Scheffler holding the lead following a round 31 times on Tour the past three seasons speaks to Scottie’s spectacular play and dominance. The next closest player to have led or co-led following a round is 16 times.

Scheffler ramains the No. 1 ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings for the 49th consecutive week. His win at Harbour Town was also the 10th of his career on Tour. It took him 51 tournaments to win his 10th PGA Tour title following his first win. Tiger Woods did it in 59 events with David Duval the fastest from wins 1 to 10 at 33 starts.

Scheffler’s strokes gained stats are simply staggering. Scheffler ranks No. 1 in SG: Total, Tee to Green, Approach, No. 2 Off the Tee and top-10 Around the Green. He’s continued to win despite ranking outside the top 150 in SG: Putting. Scheffler gained more than a stroke both off the tee and on approach shots in his first three rounds at Harbour Town. He has done this in 27.2% of his rounds over the last three seasons. The rest of the PGA Tour has done it 4.7% of the time.

Scheffler then finished off another victory with a strong performance on Sunday at Harbour Town that included this chip-in for eagle from 53 feet off the front right short rough on the Par 5 at hole No. 2.

He’s now played 40 rounds in 2024 and has yet to shoot a round over par. It’s 44 in a row dating back to last year’s Tour Championship in August. Tiger Woods currently holds the Tour record at 52 rounds shooting par or better, which he set during the 2000-01 season.

Scheffler’s desire to win and determination to be the best is shining through despite any pressure that may mount. He’s nearly locked up 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year honors before the end of April, and commented on his play and performances following rounds 3 and 4 while dealing with any added pressure.

Internally, do you feel less pressure compared to a few months ago when you're out there playing?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: It's tough to answer. I mean, I talked about it a bit at the end of last week. I really love winning, and I don't really like losing at all. It's one of those things where I try to manage the expectations of myself, kind of get that stuff out of the way and then go out there and compete.

Scheffler also added 700 FedEx Cup Playoffs Points to his total by winning the Signature Event at the RBC Heritage. He tops the points list with 3,915 - more than double Wyndham Clark (1,892) with Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg and Sahith Theegala next at more than 1,500 points.

Scheffler is scheduled to compete in the Wells Fargo Championship May 9-12 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC - another $20 million Signature Event. He should be a first-time father by then with wife Meredith expecting their child very soon.

“I definitely will enjoy the birth of my first child, and my priorities will change very soon, so golf will be fourth in line, but I still love competing,” he said last Sunday in the Butler Cabin at The Masters .

He competed at the highest level again without a letdown to win the RBC Heritage. Scheffler will enter the next major as the +450 favorite at the PGA Championship May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY. FanDuel Sportsbook also has Scheffler at +6500 odds to win the Grand Slam and all four majors this year.

Scottie Scheffler is showing no signs of letdown and fans and bettors continue to support him despite ultra-low odds to win not seen since Tiger Wood’s dominance.

You can bet on it.
