Tour d’Argent: The iconic Paris restaurant in 7 intriguing figures

We’ve just had lunch at the iconic Paris restaurant, the Tour d’Argent. In short: It was the best dining experience I’ve ever had. And the new renovation job is excellent.

It was a four-course Michelin meal with a view over the Seine, the Notre Dame, and the rooftops of Paris. And it was two-and-a-half hours in Parisian heaven.

We’ve collected seven intriguing facts and figures about the restaurant, which are compiled below with some practical details for your own potential visit.

1) 1582: The year the Tour d’Argent was built

The first incarnation of la Tour d’Argent opened in 1582 as an inn on the ground floor. The Tour d’Argent, meaning “the Silver Tower”, takes its name from from the glistening champenoise stone with which it was originally built.

In the 16th century, the restaurant catered toward royalty, aristocrats and nobility, providing a safe place for the elite to dine. Many Kings of France dined at the Tour d’Argent and legend has it was here that King Henry III first discovered a fork, which was at the time the latest sensation from Italy.

2) 1936: The year the Tour d’Argent moved upstairs

In 1922, owner André Terrail purchased and merged buildings 15 and 17 on Quai de la Tournelle, which allowed him to add a new top floor. And so it was in 1936 that the restaurant shifted from the ground floor to the top, allowing a more contemporary design including those enormous bay windows for panoramic Paris views.

3) 16: Total months for the new renovation

From April 2022 to August 2023 the Tour d’Argent had an extensive renovation. The project, led by interior designer Franklin Azzi, brought the restaurant into the 21st century.

The designers added a metallic, “kinetic ceiling”, a carpet inspired by the Seine, and expanded the kitchen into the dining room.

Artist Antoine Carbonne added a modern fresco he called “Perle”, which depicts a medieval-inspired map of Paris that blurs the lines between fantasy and history.

Down on the ground floor, where the original Tour d’Argent was located, is the Bar des Maillets d’Argent. Cafe by day and cocktail bar by night, the bar’s 1930s design pays homage to the last years the Tour d’Argent was located here. Perched on the very top floor is the Tour d’Argent’s bar Le Toit de la Tour , which is a reservation-only rooftop bar .

4) 1,179,385: The number of the duck we had

In 1890 Frédéric Delair codified the recipe for canard au sang (pressed duck), which specified preparation, sauce and service. To maintain the recipe’s longevity he decided to start numbering the ducks served. To this day, the restaurant gives clients an embossed card recording which number duck they received. We shared duck number 1,179,385.

5) 300,000: The number of wine bottles in the cellar

The Tour d’Argent is famous for having one of the largest wine collections in the world. The cellar, guarded around the clock, contains more than 300,000 bottles – with some of the bottles dating back to the 18th century. Of those wines, about 15,000 are offered to diners in the 5kg, 400-page “anthology wine bible”.

Safe to say, we’re not wine connoisseurs. When we spoke about the wine list on the podcast, we admitted to being “first pagers”, and were more than happy to go with the recommendations of the sommelier.

6) €150: Cost for one lunch at the Tour d’Argent

There is certainly a sliding scales of prices at the Tour d’Argent. For €150 (160USD and 250AUD) per person, you can have the four-course lunch (drinks not included). On the other end of the scale is the nine course tasting menu for dinner priced at €1,582 (1,680USD and 2650AUD).

On 5th October 2023, the 1,178,727th duck was served at the Tour d’Argent . It was a Challans duck which, like all the others since 1890, comes from the Burgaud family. Loyalty is a key word in this house, where they are continuing the legacy of Frédéric Delair, the maître d'hôtel who became owner of the Tour d'Argent and made pressed duck the restaurant's speciality. He refined the serving, cutting the duck at the end of a fork, without it touching the dish. He had the brilliant idea of numbering the ducks served, a tradition kept to this day by the Terrail family, who bought the restaurant in 1911. They are also faithful to historical recipes, such as The Three Emperors' foie gras, first served in 1867 during the Universal Exhibition in Paris, to three emperors: William I of Prussia, Tsar Alexander II and his son – the future Alexander III – as well as Chancellor Bismarck.

The change in tradition:

Chef Yannick Franques, who has been in the kitchen at Tour d’Argent for four years, is not content with perpetuating history, but rather intends to bring the restaurant into the present day: “The recipe for the pressed duck has remained intact. The duck is cut in mid-air, with very precise movements, at the table, by the maître d'hôtel, then presented in two courses: the supreme with blood sauce, served on a plate specially made by ceramist Sylvie Coquet. Then during the second course, you can enjoy the confit leg, on a small skewer, with a piece of duck pudding. Today I use – as best I can – all parts of the duck, to respond to current concerns about limiting waste. I have also twisted certain dishes, like the pike quenelle, which I also prepare with pike perch. "I'm working on lightening some sauces too, and have created new dishes like the 'mystère de l’œuf' and plantain gyoza. We studied the restaurant archives a lot and took out recipes from the boxes, such as 'the lobster of the three maharajahs'. I work with ingredients that we didn't use before like yuzu, or certain spices which I find at Ankhor, which sources its produce in France. I also wanted to rethink the first course, by offering – on the Christofle silver presentation plate – a Parisian parfait on a zabaglione  which changes every season."

Looking to the future:

This legendary restaurant opens itself up to the future just as its bay windows open onto the Seine and Notre-Dame Cathedral, or rather the latter's lengthy reconstruction project. “Contrary to what we thought, the work on the cathedral does not put off our customers – it even constitutes entertainment for them. At night, the site is entirely illuminated,” explains André Terrail III, President of the establishment since the death of his father Claude in 2006. After 18 months of work, the Tour d'Argent reopened its doors. “The 6th and 7th floors have been completely rebuilt,” explains Virginie Guyonnet, Communications Director for the Tour d’Argent group. The renovation, including the facelift of the gourmet restaurant's dining room, was entrusted to architect Franklin Azzi. The kitchen has expanded and now opens onto the room, allowing customers to watch an impressive procession of chef's hats as the team complete the theatrical dishes in full view; you can watch, for example, as the livers are crushed and mixed with Madeira and Cognac, then the carcass is put in a majestic silver press. Three new spaces have been created for the building, from the ground floor to the roof: the Bar des Maillets d'Argent, open from breakfast; the Toit de la Tour, on the 7th floor, for a drink at the top of the Tower; and the Apartment, the former home of the Terrail family, today open for an exceptional stay.

The experience at the heart of La Tour:

“All the developments made over the past 10 years at the Tour d’Argent are at the service of the table, of the gastronomic experience offered to our customers. So Le Boulanger de la Tour, our bakery, works above all for the restaurant; Kévin Derpierre, our Baker, offers a specific bread with each dish. At L’Épicerie de la Tour, you can find produce from our suppliers. On the ground floor, the Bar des Maillets d'Argent opens from 9am to midnight and extends the gastronomic experience with a cocktail or digestif. We are also working on a cigar offering on the terrace,” explains Terrail. “The cellar, today managed by Victor Gonzales who succeeds David Ridgway, still has nearly 300,000 bottles. This exceptional choice of wines is obviously also part of what customers come for at the Tour d’Argent,” he adds. While their name might translate to silver, it’s a gold medal finish for La Tour d’Argent and the team continuing to bring excellence to France’s gastronomic scene.

We choose Tour d'Argent as we were looking for a Michelin Star lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Through much research we found this is one of the only Michelin restaurants in the city to offer service on a weekend afternoon. First of all, the setting... is incredible, amazing panaromic views from 6 floors up, stunning decor in classic french style. We choose the lunch menu and tried most dishes between the two of us and although the starters weren't to our taste the duck and desserts were outstanding. Above the food though was the service, attentive, knowledgeable and highly professional without ever being pushy or in your face. The house wine was also a surprising highlight. More

What could I say about Tour d'Argent that hasn't been said before? I honestly don't know. We got its name as a personal recommendation and decided to give it a try. We had lunch on occasion of my birthday and it was truly one of... the most memorable meals I ever had. Everything from the food to the service and decor is top notch. And while this is probably a place where to go for best value for money, the experience even exceeded our expectations. On some other fine dining restaurants I've been to before they can be spartan with portions, but Tour d'Argent by contrast give you plenty! I would agree with other reviewers in saying the service is correct and not overly fussy. Well done to Tour d'Argent for keeping with its tradition and savoir-faire. More

From the moment we entered the restaurant to the moment we left no one could have made our night more special. The waiter helped choose the wine at a price that was suitable, we ordered the duck set menu which was fabulous the dessert was... so large we could not manage it all. Already saving for our next booking. More

One of the best meals my husband and I have had in 40 years of marriage. We dined here last week and are still spending of the experience. Our arrival was greeted by the pleasant doorman. We were taken up to the restaurant by elevator... and met by the Maitre’d, who sat us at a window side table, which was beautifully set. We enjoyed small nibbles with glasses of champagne which set the tone for the evening. The wine list as others have mentioned, is massive. I am in the wine business but deferred to the (native Boston!) sommelier’s suggestion of a Malbec to accompany the restaurant’s signature duck duo preparation (which was done table side). This was after a second amuse Bouche of zucchini flowers and appetizers of crab and foie gras. The first course is duck breast, and soufflé potatoes, served with the famous duck blood sauce. The second preparation is the leg accompanied by sausage served in pastry cups. As expected, all was exceptional. During the meal the owner stopped by our table to inquire if we were enjoying our evening - and we certainly were! Too bad our numbered duck card arrived too late for him to sign for us . We ended our meal with dessert (no room for the wonderful looking cheese cart course!), a chocolate creation for myself and the famous baba with champagne and berries for my husband. These were served with coffee and tea and more little dessert bites. Of course, this all comes at a premium ($900 US) but we felt it was worth every penny. More

We enjoyed a lunch from the set menu. To each course we had a glas of wine with perfect help from a helpful sommelier - she really knew her wines;-) Foie gras ravioli was divine and extremely rich in taste. The duckling served to perfection!... Desert with a superb taste of chocolate and full bodied coffee. The staff is impeccable in their job. Have to mention the view also; what better way to experience Paris than from the windows of this restaurant. Will be back! More

I have been wanting to go to this restaurant for many many years and have the experience of the canard presse. To be honest it was not all disappointing. We got the best table in the restaurant ( at least in our opinion ) The... second service of the duck was perfect The lady sommelier chose a very good red wine BUT From the beginning the waiters seemed as if there were / is a second service coming that evening and rushed us to order. Instead of looking from a distance the waiter came on frequent occasions sort of disturbing us. Bread crumbs on the table was not, until the very end removed from the table The first serving of "extras" was incredible dry and boring. The whole atmosphere of the duck being pressed in front of you was not there. In my opinion the most important part of the "show". I have been to at least a dozen of Michelin restaurants around the world and must say that "The Tour" has to step up the game to get stars. We left with an empty feeling both in our minds and in our stomach ( even the lady complained ) because where did the rest of the duck go ! More

After several trips to Paris and numerous Michelin starred meals, my husband and I decided to finally give Tour d’Argent a try, if only for posterity. We knew the building and location were magnificent, that the sense of history would be palpable, and that the... grandeur of the restaurant itself would be notable. But we weren’t expecting to be wowed by the food. In fact, the menu offerings sounded stiff and old fashioned —royal hare soup w/ foie gras ravioli, wild pike en croute, duckling, whiting with a brioche crust. Yet to our great delight, the dishes were each delicious and interesting, not overwhelming and heavy. The hare soup was especially memorable and the fish superb. On top of it all, the hospitality was extraordinary—not at all pretentious but energetic and warm. We are thrilled that we had this experience and thank the entire staff for their amazing work. It takes a lot of training and coordination to produce such perfection, century after century. More

I have wanted to try this restaurant out since I was a student in Paris in the 70s but never did the stars align to make it happen. Finally, on a recent trip, and scouting out a special place for my daughter's birthday, I managed... to organise a lunch for myself. First, of course, is the amazing perch over the Seine which directly faces the cathedral of Notre Dame; still impressive yet sobering to see the massive amount of work that will be required to make it whole again. Service was excellent all around, someone always there to do what is required, without really making their presence felt. A unique skill seen only in restaurants like this in France but seldom seen elsewhere. Sommelier's was from Boston but was very knowledgeable and most helpful to me in finding some off the run wines from the Jura and Savoie. Food was excellent though three courses and one finished feeling full but not bloated. I had two bottles of wine and the three course menu for 300 euros. I would certainly take my daughter there for her birthday, if only they were open in mid-August! More

Beautiful day and of course view. Yes the Tour is old school comfort and class, but it’s not stuffy. The service is friendly, attentive, not overdone and you can have a friendly chat. You have lots of room and elegance. The wine list is of... course legendary and you can have a really informed discussion with the sommelier and find mature wine in your price range which is rare these days. Including big names at less than retail prices. Amazing. We had the fixed price menu which is the best value and though the choice is small the quality is high. I found the olive tapenade on my Guinea fowl a bit too strong, but otherwise all good and the quenelles and desert were really delicious. We come here rarely but every time it’s a treat. More

Dreadful experience the minute we set foot in this renowned establishment with the Maitre d' refusing to give us a table in the middle when the restaurant was pretty empty: he insisted on sitting us at the very back (with zero view yet the same... extortionate prices!) on the basis that we had not booked several months ahead!! He was snooty and unhelpful. The food was nice but standard boring classical French, nothing to excite the pallet. The waiters were lovely but the atmosphere was zero except for some obsequious manager turning up to say Hi. "SURFAIT" is the word to describe this place, an expensive old-fashioned tourist-trap. Totally uncreative and unexciting food: the silver came out as pure theatre. None of the flair, ingenuity or sense of surprise of Marsan by Helene Darroze for example which is simply terrific. More

We made a reservation for lunch, with a glass of champagne and a tour at the cave included. Our lunch was amazing from the beginning to the end, in every detail. We took our two little daughters with us and we had no problems at... all with that. In fact, the made a different, simpler, menu for them, which was very kind. The service was very attentive and gentle. The food itself was great - we chose the lunch menu (105 euros per person) plus the cheese step (which I strongly recommend). The menu consists in some “amuse bouche”, the a starter (I had the Quenelles and my wife had the egg with mushrooms and truffle, both excellent), the main course (the duck, not the famous pressed one, but still delicious) and the dessert (we had chocolate pie, also very good). Besides the great food and the excellent service, the view from the restaurant is amazing. It’s not cheap, but worths every cent! More

Second visit to this marvelous restaurant! Andre Terrail and his team put on a marvelous display of virtuosity in service. As it was our last day of a 3 week trip to Europe, we over-committed ourselves and arrived quite tardy to the restaurant for our... lunch reservation (I did give the reception updates on our later than expected arrival time). The reception, appreciative of our communications, was kind. The young lady smiled, took our coats and whisked us upstairs to the dining room. The dining room reception was equally warm to our late arrival and then the show began. A fine ballet of wine stewards, front waiters and back waiters effortlessly took care of our every whim and need; discussing everything from menu, wine and desert options to the historial sites viewed from the floor-to-ceiling windows and general history of this temple of cuisine. The service was meticulous and thoughtful and, of course, was the food. Light, elegant and ephemeral flavors as well as rich and seductive flavors….food for the gods! Two of our guests asked for crepes suzette without alcohol and the team happily obliged…table side service of crepes was lovely with fresh juices and rinds of citrus fruit to substitute for the alcohol usually used. The cheers cart is one of the best in the world (you are in France, after all). To cap it all off, it was Three Kings Day, and the restaurant served all guests a portion of the obligatory Galette des Rois…a guest at another table was lucky enough to the find the “crown” in their piece of cake and was provided with a fun crown to wear at the end of their meal. So fun! This place does not skip a beat and deserves every accolade! Thank you! More

Most amazing restaurant. The service was excellent . . . From the young doorman that welcomed us on arrival to the greeting from owner André Terrail at the end of our meal. The location superb, with the Restuarant sitting on the banks of the Seine... with fabulous views towards Notre Dame. The whole meal was an amazing experience, especially the famous pressed duck. Seeing the crepes suzette flambé d by our table was pure magic especially the hand made ice cream. A truly memorable evening in Paris. Thank you More

I and two friends had Sunday lunch at the Tour d'Argent following the recommendation of some of our fellow students in a French immersion program in Tours, France. We enjoyed the view (right beside the window), the service (the sense of humor of our waiters... with our Franglais), and the food. The scallops were amazing and we appreciated the advice of the sommalier since the wine list was a large volume that weighed >15 lbs. We appreciated the warmth of the service and being able to spend several hours eating, drinking, and enjoying each others company. I hope to return on a future visit with my husband or other family members. More

Having heard so much about this restaurant, I was very much looking forward to the evening. Unfortunately however, from the first moments there, I saw that so much was lacking. Upon entering the restaurant 5 minutes before my reservation time, a woman at the door... told me to have a seat and she would get back to me soon. This took me by surprise, as she was not at all welcoming. the two of us sat in the bar lounge as we were told, and there we sat. % minutes passed, then 10 and even 15. No one ever came to us to offer us a drink, or even a glass of water. The game woman saw that I was gettin irritated, and she finally came over to say that she was having to take another group up to theta floor before because she had no where to put them. This seemed like a strange excuse for the delay of over 15 minutes. When she finally came to escort us to the elevator, she asked me what was wrong. I guess she cold tell by my face that I was not happy. I told her that I felt it was inexcusable to keep us waiting for so long, and her only response was that they take one party up the elevator at a time and that's "just how we do it." There was absolutely no apology at all. Then, we finally got to our table, and to add insult to injury, we sat at the table for 7 minus (yes, I counted) until someone finally came to take a drink order. The rest of the evening was filled with mishaps and lack of attention. "I end up spending about £100 a month on travel. When you add up rent and everything else it builds up. 

"When I was trying to opt out I was advised not to but when you add up the smaller payments it makes a difference."

What could the consequences be?

Peter Jackson, formerly chief data officer at the Pensions Regulator and now in the same role at Outra, says he understands the pressures young people are under but warns...

"If you flip out of your pension you are pushing a cost of living crisis into your retirement. You are not going to have a sizeable pension pot available to you when you come to retire."

Mr Jackson goes on: "It's harder to build that pot when you are 55 or 60 because you have only got a few years left.

"Personally, that would be the last thing I would stop doing."

How much could you lose?

Pausing pension contributions even for a short time can have consequences, the life assurance and pensions company Standard Life has found.

Its analysis suggests a person who began working on a salary of £25,000 per year in 2020 and paid the standard monthly auto-enrolment contributions (5% employee and 3% employer monthly contributions) from the age of 22 could amass a total retirement pot of £459,000.

Opting out for three years would knock off £36,000 from your retirement pot - and six years £71,000.

Missing out on free money

And crucially, Mr Jackson adds...

"With a lot of employers, if you increase your contributions a lot of them will match it up to a certain percentage so it is kind of like free money."

Clare Moffat, pensions and legal expert at Royal London, says pausing pension contributions "might be something people have to do" as bills rise but they should take any pay rise as an opportunity to opt back in.

"A lot of younger people think they are not going to get any state pension or they are not going to see state pension until they are about 70 but then they still want to retire when they are about 60," she says.

"It's up to employers to help a bit as well. Remind people when they get a pay rise that this might be a good time if you have opted out to opt back in."

When it comes to knowing how much to contribute, she says, "it's better to think how much money you would need in retirement" - and there are tonnes of free online retirement calculators.

She adds: "I've never heard someone say I wish I had saved less for retirement - most people wish they had saved more.

"Sometimes, people can be put off and think they need to be saving hundreds of pounds a month but if you're in your 20s, little increases are good."

Money locked away is a good thing

Why not look at saving for a pension differently, suggests Claire Trott, divisional director for retirement and holistic planning at wealth manager St James's Place.

People see it as money being tied up for decades, but "actually that's a real winner".

"We all know we can dip into things we shouldn't but with pensions you can't. They are there, they get their tax relief, they get the growth, they sit there and year on year you will see some change," she says.

"Obviously, we know that markets fluctuate so it may not always look that rosy, but the longer it can stay in there the better.

"Getting it in there in your 30s or ideally in your first job just means you get that compound growth on it over the long-term."

She concludes:

"With pensions, because it's locked away and you are making that good decision, it means you are doing your future self a real service because you can't touch it and it is there to be invested appropriately."

Cheap breakfasts are the order of the day at Beefeaters - where two kids (under 16) eat free breakfast with any adult breakfast purchased for £9.99 or more.

Available 6.30am to 10.30am midweek and 7am and 11am at the weekend.

This one is a real bargain - a two to 11-year-old can get three courses and a drink for just £1 with every purchase of an adult meal.

Head to the Brazilian outlet's website to download a voucher for one free children's meal (for those under 10) per adult meal purchased.

Kids under 12 can enjoy a mezze or souvlaki wrap, plus a drink and ice cream or sorbet for dessert if an adult spends £10 or more.

Kids can eat for just £1 with a purchase of every adult meal Monday to Friday from 12pm.

Until 12 April, up to two children can eat for free all day (excluding weekends) when one adult orders any main.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without emptying your wallet.

In this series over the coming months, we're trying to find the cheapest ways to identify the healthiest options in the supermarket.

We've asked  Sunna Van Kampen,  who went viral on social media for reviewing supermarket products in the search of healthier choices, for his input. 

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, rather how to get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

Today we're looking at pasta , a staple in many kitchens but often dismissed as just a carb-heavy comfort food. 

The key to transforming your pasta into a protein and fibre-packed meal without sacrificing taste or breaking the bank lies in the variety of wheat, Sunna says. 

"Pasta made from refined wheat strips out the bran and germ, which lowers the protein content as well as fibre and other nutrients," he says. 

"Typical lower-cost pasta varieties therefore contain on average about 5-6g of protein per 100g. Make yourself a nice big plate and you can expect 10-12g per portion - not really a game changer."

Here's where the Italians have it right. 

"Traditional Italian branded varieties are made using local semolina flour from Italy in traditional ways," Sunna says.

"Italian pasta must adhere to strict standards that have been set by the government - meaning a typical branded Italian pasta will select the best durum wheats in terms of gluten quality, healthiness and protein content."

That means a 200g plate of pasta has 24-28g of protein - before you add any meat or protein into the sauce.

Another option that's been popping up on supermarket shelves is legume pasta, made from lentils or chickpeas.

"These help increase the protein content (on average about 12-13g per 100g) but have other important health benefits too," Sunna says.

"Lentil pasta can boast 25-50% more fibre than standard pasta, is gluten-free and helps keep you fuller for longer."

On that note... 

Fibre is vital for gut health and Public Health England estimates as low as 9% of us are getting enough of it in our diets.

"This is where lentil or wholewheat pasta can be a game changer," Sunna says.

With a 200g serving of lentil pasta you'd be getting 6.4g of fibre, which is 21% of your daily intake, or for wholewheat you'd be getting 7.6g of fibre or 25% of your daily intake. 

"Fibre will also help limit the impact of the carbohydrates, so opting for a higher fibre variety can also be helpful if you are focused on weight loss," he says.

The nutritionist's view - from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food, and health sciences at Teesside University

"Yes, these are good suggestions. 

"It's definitely worth promoting the higher fibre and higher protein types - both of which make you feel fuller for longer and also help to support and encourage a healthy bowel. 

"White versions of pasta also can cause a spike in blood glucose levels, leaving us feeling tired shortly after, as well as potentially hungry again quite soon. 

"This effect is correlated with increasing the risk for type 2 diabetes and should be discouraged."

Own label regular pasta ( low protein, low fibre, gluten ) is usually £1.50/kg at all supermarkets as they price match each other on household staples.

Own label wholewheat pasta ( low protein, high fibre, gluten ) is usually £1.50/kg at all supermarkets.

Branded Italian pasta ( high protein, medium fibre, gluten ) ranges from £2.25-£3.00/kg .

Lentil pasta ( high protein, high fibre, gluten-free ) is where things get pricey at an average of £6.80/kg .

Now you've got the facts and figures, it's up to you to decide what works for your budget and needs. 

April is around the corner - here are the key money dates that could affect you in the next month.

'National price hike day'

TV and broadband customers are likely see rises of between 6.7% and 8.8% depending on their provider. 

Council tax rises by just under 5% for most people who live in councils with responsibility for social care in England. In areas where the councils don't oversee social care, the rise for most is 2.99%. Rises are more variable in Wales, while council tax has been frozen in Scotland.

The TV licence jumps from £159 a year to £169.50, while water, rent for social housing, car tax and (Scottish) train fares also go up.

Minimum wage rise

The national minimum wage for those 21 and over rises to £11.44 - an increase of £1.02, or 9.8%.

There are bigger percentage increases for younger age groups -as well as a 21.2% rise for apprentices (going up to £6.40).

From 1 April, when the new cap kicks in, to 30 June, the price paid by a typical household that uses electricity and gas is £1,690 a year.

This is £238 a year lower than the cap between 1 January and 31 March. 

The Royal Mail increases the price of stamps again as the company struggles with a decline in letters.

The price of a first class and second class stamp go up by 10p to £1.35 and 85p respectively.

5 April - end of tax year

If you're paying into an ISA, funds need to have cleared by this date for it to count towards the 2023-24 year's contributions. The new £20,000 allowance kicks in the following day.

Benefits and pensions increase

Benefits and tax credits - specifically those linked to inflation - rise by 6.7%. 

For joint claimants over 25, universal credit standard allowances rise from £578.82 to £617.60 a month.

The basic and new state pension also go up by 8.5%.

The new state pension is for those who reached state pension age on or after 6 April 2016. It rises to £221.20 a week - up from £203.85.

National insurance cut

After Jeremy Hunt's promise in the budget, a further two pennies in every pound is cut from NI contributions. 

Capital gains cut

The top rate for capital gains tax goes down from 28% to 24%.

8 April - eBay fee

eBay introduces a "regulatory operating fee" for sellers, charging 0.35% of a total sale, including postage. 

It affects anyone listing items in the UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.

17 April - inflation data for March

We get insight into inflation in March when the Office for National Statistics releases its latest figures.

High margins for fuel retailers may mean drivers are still paying over the odds at the pump, according to the competition regulator.

In a monitoring report, following its fuel market study of 2022, the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) said fuel margins - the difference between what retailers pay for their fuel and the price they sell it at - remained "concerning".

The regulator said supermarket margins, which had stood at 4% in 2017, rose to 7.8% in 2023.

Other retailers, it said, saw their margins hit 9.1% last year.

This was "not a good sign for drivers", the CMA said, though it stopped short of openly declaring that they were being overcharged.

Lobby groups representing both the supermarkets and independent retailers, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) respectively, have consistently denied ripping drivers off.

Emissions of climate-heating gases from the UK continued to fall last year.

That's good news for the climate, and reinforces the fact UK has cut emissions faster than any other G20 country - by 53% since 1990.

But the reasons aren't entirely good.

While most of the fall last year was down to the UK burning less gas for electricity because it imported more from France, a large chunk was due to homes and businesses cutting back on electricity amid soaring prices.

Budgets were also "squeezed" by high interest rates, inflation and mortgages, said Glenn Rickson, who analyses the UK power sector for S&P Global Commodity Insights.

More than 600 Border Force officers at Heathrow Airport will go on a four-day strike from 11 April, the last weekend of the Easter school break, their union has announced.

The officers, who carry out immigration controls and passport checks, have voted to take strike action over a new roster and changes to their shift pattern. 

The PCS union has warned the changes could see 250 members of staff lose their jobs by the end of April.

"Ministers have 14 days to withdraw these unfair and unnecessary proposals or our members at Heathrow will take strike action," Fran Heathcote, its general secretary, said.

"Ripping up flexible working arrangements is no way to treat staff especially as the government says their work is critical to our nation's security."

Respected energy consultants Cornwall Insight have predicted the typical household's energy bill will fall to £1,560 a year from July. 

That's more than £100 less than the price cap that comes into force on Monday, which is set at £1,690 a year. 

However, the leading market researcher's latest prediction is around 7% higher than its previous forecast from around a month ago.

Ofgem changes the price cap every three months based on several factors, the most important of which is the price of energy on wholesale markets.

Wholesale prices recently hit their lowest point for a quarter of a decade, but have risen slightly in recent weeks.

The price cap does not limit a household's total bills - the figures provided are just for an average-use household.

Cornwall Insight also predicts the price cap will rise slightly from the July figure to £1,631 in October. 

"With wholesale prices hitting a two-and-a-half-year low, it was only a matter of time before a slight rise occurred as the market stabilises," Dr Craig Lowrey, its principal consultant, said.

"While no household will want to see forecasts rising, it's important to recognise that these do still represent a fall from the new cap coming in from April, itself a large drop." 

Uswitch has said the prediction is "another step in the right direction" for households. 

Energy expert Will Owen said: "Energy prices are forecast to rise into autumn and winter, so for the many households wanting price certainty, now is a good time to consider fixing.

"We're increasingly seeing suppliers offer better value deals, but Ofgem’s steps to reform the price cap must encourage more innovation from suppliers and bring back competition on price and customer service."
