Flanders Classics call for more respect for riders ahead of Sunday's Tour of Flanders
First raced in 1913, the Tour of Flanders gained massive popularity in the region as a punishing sporting exhibition with riders enduring long distances over terrible roads.
From the 1970s to 2012, the key feature of the race was the steep, moss-covered pitches of the Muur van Geraardsbergen , or Kapelmuur (after the small chapel at its summit) and the Bosberg shortly after. Since 2012, the course has shifted to closing circuits with dual ascents of the Paterberg and Oude Kwaremont and a finish in Oudenaarde.
The Tour of Flanders route has been overhauled this year with an emphasis on safety, shifting the route to more major roads on the run out to the finishing circuits around Oudenaarde and a new approach to the Koppenberg.
The crescendo of the 'Holy Week' of Flemish cycling will take place on March 31, 2024.
The race favours riders who are strong enough to shed their rivals on the double-digit gradients and fast enough to burn any hangers-on off their wheels in the sprint.
Last year, two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) soloed to victory after a stunning attack on the final climb of the Oude Kwaremont that distanced Mathieu van der Poel and the other big-name rivals. Van der Poel held on for second place while Mads Pedersen edged out Wout van Aert for third place.
Van der Poel won over Van Aert in 2020 and ahead of Dylan van Baarle in 2022. In between Danish champion Kasper Asgreen took the win, out-sprinting Van der Poel in a thrilling final to win the 2021 race.
