Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Is tipping customary in India?

While traveling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travelers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my cell phone while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your cell phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travelers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travelers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now ­– let your inner child rejoice!

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

Credit cards are being accepted in an increasing number of cafes, shops, restaurants and hotels in India, with Mastercard and Visa being the most common. That said, cash is still king, especially outside of cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

What is ATM access like in India?

ATMs are widespread across India in both cities and smaller towns. Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Maestro are the most commonly accepted cards, but of those Visa and Mastercard are more likely to have success. The daily withdrawal limit differs from bank to bank.

What is the weather like in India?

The weather in India varies from region to region, but it’s generally safe to say that December–February sees dry, cooler weather before the heat intensifies from March–May. June, July and August are the monsoon months, though the amount of rain differs across the country, while October, September and November see rainfall ease once more.

Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travelers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

My India Golden Triangle Itinerary — A 5 Day Tour

The Golden Triangle is one of the most popular routes for visitors to India. The three points of the Triangle are Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, which are about 4-5 hours from each other. I was a little short on time but excited to complete the whole loop. I managed to see so much of India’s Golden Triangle in 5 days, 6 nights and this is the itinerary I followed.

Day 1 — A day of Mayhem in Delhi

There’s a lot to see in Delhi so you’ll want to come up with some priorities. I love history and being a really old city, Delhi has some incredibly historic sites, some of which are very well maintained.

Chandni Chowk

My morning started in Chandni Chowk, which is a large market area with many different types of markets including spices, jewellery, fabrics, wedding and party needs and brass and copper products. The vendors generally cluster in the same areas so there are different bazaars within the Chandni Chowk area for each of these.

Chandni Chowk began life as an elite market with luscious gardens and orderly roads. Nearly 4 centuries later that seems a world away. The market was originally built by Shah Jahan in the mid 17th Century and designed by his daughter Jahanara. It attracted artisans and merchants from all over Europe.

Chandni Chowk is frenetic. The place is overrun by people, cars, rickshaws and the occasional animal. It can be overwhelming to your senses but it is an authentic Delhi experience. If you’re not confident in your ability to navigate successfully, hiring a guide can be a great idea. I had a guide from Delhi Magic Tours and he was great. Not only did he show some of the different bazaars, but we wandered down alleys and onto rooftops that I never would have ventured down on my own. Not that they were dangerous or sketchy, just uninviting and nondescript.

Either way, make sure to swing by Parathe Wali Gali and pick up a paratha, which is a type of flatbread, pounded with spices and vegetables, then fried in oil. It’s delicious.

Humayun’s Tomb

In my Opinion, Humayun’s Tomb is one of the best sights in Delhi. It is an enormous tomb that houses the remains of Emperor Humayun and around 160 members of his family and descendants. The Mausoleum is a grand structure, built primarily of red sandstone and a gargantuan marble dome.

As is common in Mughal architecture, the most notable feature is the symmetry, which can be seen in both the structure and the expansive grounds that stretch out in all directions.

Make sure you swing by the Isa Kahn Niyazi’s tomb on your way in or out too.

Qutb Complex

The Qutb Complex predates the Mughal Empire by some centuries. It was completed in 1368 and comprises 3 major structures: the Quwwut-ul-Islam Mosque, the Qutb Minar, and the Alai Darwaza. The Mosque is largely ruined but many arches and columns remain.

What struck me about the mosque was the incredible detail in the carvings on each pillar and the walls. Each pillar has been artfully decorated; the carvings in the stone are remarkable. Likewise, the patterns on the wall near the arches are exquisite.

Stay: Sheraton New Delhi

I’ve stayed at quite a few 5 star hotels now and the facilities and service can rarely be faulted. But the Sheraton actually stood out for a few quick reasons. The rain shower was perfect pressure and temperature; you can order Indian specialties at the buffet breakfast like dosa, instead of just eggs your way. The coffee in the room was actually really nice. You have a choice of 6 different types of pillow. And you get a newspaper delivered every morning, whether you are interested in local news or not.

Day 2 — Onward to Agra

Agra was the second stop on my Golden Triangle tour, the drive to which was about 4 hours and largely uneventful, with the exception of one car roaring past us sideways, careening into the guard rail arse first. Ok yeah, that was a somewhat major event (everyone was fine by the way). Once you get out of Delhi and onto the highway, the traffic really thins out.

I checked into my hotel and headed straight back out for lunch at Pinch of Spice. In stark contrast to my dinner last night, the restaurant was packed with a waiting list for a table. My murg lababdda was absolutely delicious. A chicken dish, rich and creamy and packed full of local spices. It ranked up there with my butter chicken and I recommend anyone coming to India to try it if you see it on a menu. Pinch of spice was a great place for a meal and not expensive either.

Agra Fort is the “other” attraction in Agra. Everyone comes to Agra for the Taj Mahal and also sees the Fort. But there is just as much history in the story of the fort as there is the Taj, it’s just not as grand.

The Fort has actually changed hands several times and its structure has changed with it. Much of the buildings inside the fort were built in the mid 16th Century for Admiral Emperor Akbar, from where he ruled the Mughal Empire as his capital, but Shah Jahan (Akbar’s grandson, who built the Taj Mahal) also added some. It was a great irony that shortly after completing the Taj Mahal that Shah Jahan would actually be imprisoned in the Agra Fort, where he had a distant view of the Taj but could never enter it again.

Agra Fort was a magnificent place to wander. It felt more like a walled city, as it was large and full of independent buildings. My favourite was the Anguri Bagh in the photo above, made completely of marble.  Many of the gates and buildings in the fort are built from red sandstone and were equally detailed. The Mughals clearly wanted every part of the fort to be special, regardless of its purpose.

Stay in Agra: Doubletree by Hilton

Located just a few kilometres the Doubletree was a perfect location to stay. The room, the breakfast and service could not be faulted.

Day 3 — Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri

Day 3 in India was the day I’d waited years for. My alarm woke me up right on 5 am and I was straight out of bed. No food. No coffee. Just a guide waiting in the lobby and a boy ready to check something off his bucket list.

The Taj Mahal is one of the greatest structures ever built; a monument to obscene wealth and perhaps the greatest gesture of love in history.

After entering from the more convenient West Gate, we came to the Imperial Gate. The Imperial Gate itself does not get the attention it deserves because it lives in the Taj Mahal’s shadow, but it is itself a monumental structure. If it were located anywhere else in the world (i.e. not next to the Taj Mahal) people would travel to visit it.

As you walk through the Gate, the Taj is slowly revealed through an archway, perfectly framed in its fullest glory. Although we arrived before 6am we were not alone. However, it certainly didn’t feel overrun. Sometimes iconic monuments can feel rushed and overcrowded but it certainly didn’t feel like that today. The first reason is I am travelling in the low season, being monsoon season. The second reason is that I arrived early; when Indians travel they do not wake up early to go sightseeing.

On the other side of the Imperial Gate is the first real Taj Mahal photograph moment. The challenge is arranging the symmetry perfectly in the photo. You may need to elbow and jostle in order to get the very centre spot. Even harder if you want to be in it.

A little further down is, I think, the best photo spot. You are a bit closer and a bit lower, which emphasises the size of the Taj, and it is also lower on the pond so you can get some nice reflections (see header image).

The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his 3rd and favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Anyone else have a favourite wife? She died giving birth to their 14th child and on her deathbed she requested 3 things: for Shah Jahan not to remarry, to take care of the kids, and build her a tomb, the likes of which the world has never seen. On that third point in particular I think Jahan went above and beyond.

On either side of the Taj are twin mosques that are identical in every way. One was built as a mosque, the other was simple to complete the symmetry and is a guest house. Much like the Imperial gate both are built in the classic Mughal style architecture and both are exquisite in their own tright. It seems outright absurd to build such a monument for the sake of symmetry, but when you have f*** you money like Jahan did, you can do what you want.

We walked closer to the monument and the white marble just gleamed with beauty. We put our little scratch-free booties over our shoes and walked up to the mausoleum. The genius of the construction was on full show up close. Marble reliefs surround the palace in the shape of wilted flowers and leaves. This is striking because the images have not been carved in to the stone but are raised out of the stone. How you can carve this away from the stone and end up a perfectly flat background is beyond me and absolutely astounding.

The colourful decorations around the reliefs and arches have been inlaid with around 40 precious and semiprecious stones such as lapis lazuli, rubies, sapphire, jade, and jasper. These have come from all over the world including a rare abalone shell that is only found in New Zealand.

It was honestly such a highlight to visit the incredible monument that is the Taj Mahal, photos go some way to expose its grandeur, but it has to be seen in person to believed. A risk with a place like the Taj Mahal is its reputation can precede it, which can have the effect of setting expectations unrealistically high. But my expectations were both high and met.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri was built by Admiral Emperor Akbar, the same king that built Agra Fort. Akbar moved the Mughal capital from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri in 1571 after a local sheikh predicted the birth of his son after he had lost several. However, it was soon abandoned due to difficulty in maintaining water levels.

The city is surrounded by a wall 6km in circumference. With the exception of the city palace, the city is now mostly thick green scrub, where the peasants might have lived and worked. When you visit Fatehpur Sikri you actually visit the emperor’s palace. Unlike the Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri (the palace) is built entirely in red sandstone including the ground. It includes many fine examples of ornate stone carving skills. Although much of the adornments, and paintings have been lost to vandalism and fading over 4 centuries, remnants remain that hint of its past splendour.

As you pass through the gate you are welcomed by a large field with a viewing deck — the diwan-i-aam — from which the emperor would, among other things, watch convicted criminals be trampled by elephants. How grim.

The palace gave a beautiful insight into the lives of the royals and nobles that lived here. The public and private meeting halls were well-preserved, and, while green, the tansen chabutra pools hint at the courtyard’s former glory.

Behind the Fort of Fatehpur Sikri lies the Jama Masjid — or Friday Mosque — built in the typical Mughal style with large archways, domes, without minarets and almost completely in red sandstone. Also part of the complex is the equally impressive Buland Darwaza, an imposing gate giving access to the mosque and palace from the south side. The Jama Masjid and contents is arguably the jewel of the entire complex so when you visit make sure you see it.

Lunch at Motel Gangaur

Another butter chicken at a roadside restaurant, much more tomato-y this time. It’s interesting, at home butter chicken pretty well always tastes the same but that’s not so in India. I had a paratha on the side instead of naan.

Chand Bawri Step Well

We were running well ahead of schedule for some reason (And no, not because I’d been running my tour guide flat out since 5:30 am), so Sandeep, my driver, suggested we stop off at a monument not far off the highway. This was a solid suggestion and since I wasn’t entirely sure how I’d kill a few hours in the evening in Jaipur it sounded perfect.

So knowing nothing about the monument except that it was 1000 years old my expectations could not be lower. I pay my 300 rupees, round the corner and to my astonishment, a labyrinth of crisscrossing steps that descend down into the earth opens out in front of me.  On the fourth side was what looked like a five-story high temple etched into the stone face. It was incredible, the whole structure began at land level and dropped away into the earth.

Stay: Hilton Jaipur

I checked into the Hilton Jaipur and ate for dinner, at their own restaurant, what they call Daal Bati Churma and Roomali Roti. It was a selection of doughs and breads that you combine with a variety of curries and sauces. It tasted good and was accompanied by some live traditional Indian music.

Day 4 — Jaipur tour

I had 1 and a half days in Jaipur  which was a good amount when on a time budget. Jaipur is known for its old city, or the walled city, or the Pink City. The city was first painted pink for the visit of Prince Albert from England. Not only is pink supposedly a welcoming colour, but it also was to hide the shoddy materials and/or workmanship of the buildings at the time. These days it’s really more of a clay colour but the tradition has remained and some of the facades are indeed exquisite.

Albert Hall Museum

The first stop on the tour was Albert Hall Museum, just a couple of blocks from the Pink City New Gate. The Hall was built in honour of Prince Albert on his visit to Jaipur, during which he laid the first stone . Albert Hall, its footpath, and airspace are all covered in a blanket of pigeons. What started out as a small flock a few decades ago has — as a result of constant feeding by locals and visitors — turned into an insane coverage.

Love it or hate it they seem here to stay. Personally, as someone who doesn’t have to endure these pigeons every day, I thought it was pretty cool and enjoyed taking photos of them flying around the building.

The Pink City

Jaipur is one of the best-planned old cities in the world. It is laid out in a grid divided by 9 roads each way with very wide streets; impressive foresight for such an old establishment. It is known as a shoppers paradise with bazaars as far as the eye can see.

Just like in Delhi, the bazaars are clustered together by type. You’ll find a textbook market (to service the nearby universities), textiles, camel leather, fabric, apparel and a wealth of jewellery stores.

The centrepiece of the Walled City is the City Palace. At one end of the palace sits the Hawa Mahal. The Hawa Mahal is an ornate facade used by noblewomen to watch the world go by.

The City Palace is made up numerous buildings and courtyards including the Diwan-i-khas, diwan-i-aam, the ornate Chandra Mahal and the Mubarak Mahal, which is now a museum and gift shop. Take your time as you move from courtyard to courtyard, building to building, taking in the different types of architecture that adorn each.

The surprising highlight of the City Palace for me though was the Jantar Mantar, an old planetarium built in the 18th Century to monitor the seasons and the movements of our various celestial bodies. It’s just incredible the knowledge that Maharaja Singh possed to build this.

I had a traditional vegetarian “thali” lunch at LMB before wandering the streets of the bazaars, poking into stalls, averting my gaze and taking in the chaos.

Temple Shri Sitaramji, Galtaji ( Monkey Temple)

We drove about half an hour out of Jaipur, up into a mountain where a Hindu temple lay. The temple was actually pretty derelict and strewn with rubbish – not a strong start.

Despite this, it is still an active temple and one of the monks actually invited me into his temple where he said he lived and told me a bit about the God on the wall — Vishnu maybe — right before asking for a donation.

The main monkey part of the temple is built into a crevice between two rock faces. As I walked through what was reminiscent of an ancient ghost town I approached a pond at the foot (pictured above). I walked deeper into the chasm and up to the first tier where there was a green pool with kids bathing in it.

In its day the temple complex would have been magnificent. Today it is still impressive what they have constructed but it does feel like a shadow of its former self. As I ascended up the temple a few monkeys came to say hi, then a few more. Some were breastfeeding mothers, others were simply hungry themselves. Some still were angry with each other and were fighting along the steps. That was fun.

Stay in Jaipur: Hilton Jaipur

Day 5 — Amer Fort, drive to Delhi

Located about 40 minutes drive from Jaipur, Amer Fort stands strong in the mountains, fortified by a long wall. At the foothills of the fortress is the town of Amer. Much of the town consists of formerly abandoned and derelict buildings that some Indians have begun squatting in and claimed as their own.

The fort was built by Maharaja Man Singh — the commander of Emperor Akbar’s army. Man financed its construction out of war loot so he must have been good at his job! To get up to the palace from the town below you have the choice to walk up, ride an elephant, or catch a jeep. Or if you have your own driver they will take you up to the Moon Gate, one of 2 entrances, the other being the Sun Gate. It’s called the Sun Gate because it faces east for the rising sun. If you take an elephant it will arrive at the Sun Gate.

The gates sit on opposite sides of a large courtyard where military processions would take place presided over by the Maharaja. Up above, the well-to-do ladies could look down through marble screens with privacy.

We proceeded up a ramp and through a most ornate gate called the Ganesh Gate. In true Mughal style, the gate was covered from top to bottom in intricate patterns, inlaid with precious and semiprecious stones. The gate through to another grand courtyard. On each side was the winter and summer palaces where the imperial family would live depending on the season.

The fort was ingeniously constructed with some very intentional engineering. Because it’s in the desert, the fort is built upon 3 enormous water tanks, filtering one to another. The fort can hold enough water for 10,000 people for 3 years, which comes in handy when it only monsoons once a year and very briefly.

One example of the ingenuity is a pipe that runs around the outside of the palace that has the double effect of cooling the summer palace while also feeding water into the tanks. The ground also drains rainwater from all over the palace down into the tanks; it’s very well thought out.

Anokhi Museum

In the town of Amer, just below the Palace, the Anokhi Museum is set in a restored building founded by a British woman who came to India 50 years ago or so, fell in love with an Indian and the art of block printing. Block printing is an Indian method of printing on fabric using carved wood pieces like stamps. The patterns can be quite intricate in their design and often will involve multiple blocks to fill in different colours of the one pattern.

I struggle in even the best museums, so I’ll be honest, for me to feign interest in a very niche textiles museum was a tough ask. However, upstairs there was a demonstration which I did watch. After a few goes, the guy got me involved and then gave me the piece to take home. Woohoo free souvenir!

Hauz Khas village, Delhi

After about 4 hours on the road from Amer we arrived in Delhi around 5pm. My last activity on my 5 day India Golden Triangle tour was to stop by Hauz Khas Village on the way back to the hotel.

Hauz Khas village is a collection of a few alleys near Deer Park with a high concentration of cafes, restaurants and more bars than I’ve seen my entire time in Delhi (there were like 4 or 5 that I saw there). It’s a popular spot for young folk to hang out and be social.

I found a place that had super cheap food almost by accident. In truth, it was the first menu I saw with butter chicken on it and wanting one last hit before I left the country, in I went. I ordered half serves of everything knowing how portion sizes work in this country and I still didn’t finish it, though that may have been from the somersaults the Malaria tablets had been doing in my stomach all afternoon.

I ate what I could and on any other night I would have stopped in one of the pubs for a beer or three. But since I had a driver waiting, and I didn’t really feel like it, I resisted what little urge there was.

Following that I retreated back to the Sheraton for my final night in India; a third of #squadsq now behind me and an early flight in front of me.

As part of #squadsq, my time in Singapore was hosted by  Singapore Airlines but the fun I describe was 100% real.

Pros: - Competitive pricing of the tour, especially considering that it is a private tour - The hotels were all decent for the price, and I really enjoyed the breakfast buffets - I liked the structure of the tour, with all the key highlights of the Golden Triangle - The guide in Agra was good - The guide in Jaipur Himmat Singh was great, he gave me a lot of information and background knowledge on the visited sites, and was very friendly. He also helped me to find a good place to purchase perfume and really adapted the tour to my wishes - The driver Subhash was very kind and caring Cons: - The Delhi tour guide Pradhyuman Singh was not honest and made me feel uncomfortable. He made me pay the bicycle tour 500 rupees (should probably have been 5-10 times less). I knew it wasn't right and protested, but he kept repeating 500 and I didn't have a choice because I couldn't go anywhere else otherwise. Only after I paid he said that it was including a "tip" and that it was "as I wished" but on the moment I had no choice. I complained and clearly said I will not pay anything anymore if I'm not warned before. During the entire tour he kept repeating that he collects currencies from counties and absolutely wanted to "see" Swiss francs, implyingt that he wanted me to give him a Swiss banknote. Although I initially wanted to give a tip of 500 rupees, I told him he could have a CHF 10 note instead as a tip, which is approximately 1000 rupees, because he wouldn't stop talking about it. He then seemed unhappy and said that I have to tip 2000 rupees per guide. I said that it was way too much, but he kept insisting that it was always that amount, that everyone paid this amount, and that otherwise he barely gets any money to live. I tried to argue but eventually felt obliged to give the money - Irresponsive tour operator on the forced tipping issue: I contacted both the tour operator as well as Tourradar to ask for help on the problem encountered with the Delhi tour guide directly on the first evening. The tour operator never answered my message - In some places (Delhi mainly) I felt like I was always pushed to buy things, donate money, tip, overpay etc.

Taj Mahal, Tiger and Pink City

We had a great time in India. The tour manager Mr. Amit was very responsive to all my questions and issues prior to the trip and was waiting for us to greet us at the first hotel. Our driver Mr. Vikram was great too. He was very professional and was always on time waiting for us each day. We absolutely loved our local guide in Jaipur. He was so professional, knowledgeable and quick that we felt we were very well taken care of. Now here’s the reason I can’t give 5 stars to this tour. It was the hotel in Jaipur and the local guide in Delhi. The hotel was not up to the standard of 3 stars at all. The bathroom was disgusting, moldy and gross. They called us around 10pm asking us to order room service both nights we stayed. It was the most horrible service that I have ever experienced at any hotels around the world. Now the local guide in Delhi, he made us decide to say goodbye after 3 hours. We never had a problem tipping people at all until the rickshaw ride (which was included in the tour). It was such a turn off moment for us when the guide asked us to tip them 200 for a 200 ride. He was also on the personal phone calls a lot, which made us feel that he really didn’t want to be there at all for us. We had to call it a day.

The best part about this tour was Rakesh, our driver! This tour gives you a personal driver and personal your hides to see India. Ours, Rackesh, was the best and would highly recommend requesting him. The sights were wonderful and food was fantastic. Definitely upgrade to 5 star hotels, which are equivalent to 2-3 star by US standards.

World Travel Experiences - organized my 8-day trip in India, which included visits through Delhi, Agra with the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, and Varanasi. Overall, this felt like a perfect introduction to India, with each city offering completely different experiences in a concise manner. In addition, the tour operator offered additional options in each city that further tailored the experience based on individual preferences. Just a great, organized set-up where it felt that you were able to enjoy the cultural experience - while at the same time having the appropriate amount of time to refresh/reset for a holiday. The value/cost of the tour - from service, experience, hotels, etc - was great.

Golden Triangle Tour - 3 Days

This was an excellent 3 day tour of some of India's most famous places and I cannot praise it enough! The driver was great and the tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, patient with questions, spoke good English and also eager to be sure you enjoyed their tour! I felt that they all earned their tips and deserved them.The hotels rooms also were quite adequate with restaurants with delicious food. I felt very safe and well taken care of as an older woman of 73 years traveling alone. The schedule was not too tiring for an older person. Here is more detail if you want it. The driver Deevan Singh was a super safe driver, very courteous, kind, always early and eager to please. He made the long drives pleasant. He did not speak English as well as the tour guides, but we were able to understand one another. He even sang Krishna songs for me! He was able to get me to the airport on time for my night flight home to the USA on the last day of the tour despite a major traffic jam in Delhi. I want to recognize the young man who was my tour guide of Delhi. He also showed me the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at my request even though it was not on the itinerary. I also saw the India Gate, Presidential Palace, Lodmi Gardens and tomb, and an amazing old Muslim multi-story well from the 13th century. I am sorry I did not write down his name to give him proper credit. I also especially want to recognize my Agra tour guide Hilal for the Taj Mahal and Red Fort. He was older and a very experienced tour guide for 30 years. At my request he additionally took me to see the back view of the Taj at sunset when we arrived the first evening, as well as gave me the detailed tour the next morning at sunrise. He was very kind, informative and unhurried so I could take my time seeing it all more slowly. He knew the best photo ops and even took photos of me there. I suggest you ask for him for Agra! My tour guide Anil Sharma for Jaipur was also great and an experienced guide of 20 years even though he seemed young. We saw the Amer Fort, Wind Palace from the exterior, and toured the astronomical observatory which was amazing. I had wanted to ride the elephants at the Amer Fort but he suggested we wait till the afternoon. At first I was disappointed, but he was right that it was better to do it that way as you could take more time and have photos taken. The elephant ride was my favorite part of the entire trip! He also took photos of me at various places with my camera and then used his when my battery finished and sent them to me. The only small complaint I have is that the two hotels - the Maple in Agra and Amer Valley in Jaipur - were older and not so well maintained if you looked very closely. But this is part of being in India and could be overlooked because they were clean, had a nice appearance and courteous staff. If you want to travel in more luxury, be sure to pay extra for an upgrade if you can. I have been to India 6 times but before always traveling alone. This time it was so comfortable and pleasant to be on a tour and taken care of so well with experienced people. As you can tell, I loved this tour and highly recommend it to everyone! Explore Golden Triangle

Amit was very helpful in planning a 2-day solo trip for me in Delhi and a 5-day Golden Triangle Tour for my sister and I. He suggested extra programs in Delhi (light and water show at Akshardham Temple), Agra (dance show or Sheroes Hangout Cafe and renting sarees to take pictures during the sunrise tour of the Taj Mahal), and Jaipur (food walk tour and visiting Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort). All communication with Amit was prompt and informative. Vikram, our driver, made us feel safe and secure. He was very attentive in providing extra bottles of water during the hot days, umbrellas during the monsoon rain, and in finding vegan food options for me and mild, non-spicy Indian food for my sister. Vikram went above and beyond and made us feel instantly welcome in India easing initial apprehension about traveling alone as women. The tour guides Neeraj in Delhi, Dilip in Agra, and Raj in Jaipur (please excuse any misspelled names) spoke excellent German and showed us the sights in the cities they love and know well. We saw everything that interested us and learned a lot. The hotels, we asked to upgrade to from 3 stars to 4 stars. Especially Shapura House in Jaipur was excellent - friendly staff, great accomodations with all amenities you can think of, and wonderful breakfast buffets with life cooking and many good options. We were pleasantly surprised to see a dance show and puppet show at Shapura House. Raj also took us to a textile place and my sister got to print an elephant with four different vegetable colors and stamps on fabric. We have recommended Yolo India Tours to friends and family and won't hesitate to book through them again.

India's Luxury Golden Triangle with Leopard Safari & Sunrise Taj Mahal

Being I am single and 70 years old, many people gasp when I say I am traveling to foreign countries. I have used Tour Radar before and will again. First time for the local tour company, Swastick India Journeys. I was very pleased with Swastick. I have absolutely no complaints. All my questions were answered promptly, considering the 12 hour time difference between Texas USA and India. I always have a lot of questions, I never like surprises. and they never failed to respond. I booked this with 2 other people. We booked the Golden Triangle tour so we could see the most popular historical sights. I always request a tour of less than 20 people. It was a guaranteed depart trip and it became a private tour for the 3 of us. Our driver was Sandeep Nirwan Fatehpura. He was waiting for us at the airport. I always arrive 1 day before the tour starts and stay at the hotel the tour will start from. I asked for Swastick to arrange a tour guide for this extra day. They did, and we were comfortably able to get local currency, a little shopping, and relax before the tour started. Sandeep picked us up daily at our hotels, always letting us know the night before what time he would arrive. He was always on time. On the Days we had a local tour guide, they met us in the hotel lobby before our driver arrived. The guides also met us and ensured we were checked into any new hotel we moved to. Then they informed us what our itinerary was for that city. All the tour guides were informative, pleasant and attentive to our needs, and spoke English very well. The itinerary for the trip was spectacular. But our driver made it super spectacular. Sandeep's driving skills were exemplary. Even our tour guides complimented him. He spoke very good English, so when we had no guide along, we were able to ask him questions. This made our long trips to the next city very enjoyable. We felt very safe and secure with him. He always was checking with us to ensure we were comfortable, needed anything, including needing to take a break on the long drives. We also chose to stay 2 days after the standard tour. Initially we were to stay at the same hotel in New Dehli. Sandeep made some suggestions for the extra days. Swastick was able to accommodate us and we added two more villages to our itinerary. We did have to pay an additional fee for the changes. I felt the charges were reasonable. So with accepting the add on, we were able to see more of India's villages, customs and everyday life. The last day we were safely taken to the airport for our journey home.

How Long to Spend in India

Most people spend 7 to 14 days in India.

For first timers , this almost invariably includes the classic route visiting Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur (India's "golden triangle"), which usually takes about 7 days.

Many couple's or family trips spend 10–14 days in India for a more relaxed pace and time for unique, fun experiences like a tiger safari. They often visit Rajasthan (5–7 days), which is known for its tiger safaris, deserts, and culture; Mumbai (2–3 days), which is famous for Bollywood; and Goa (3–5 days), a wonderful beach destination.

Delhi, being the capital city, is usually the starting point for an India trip. There you can easily have a summative first impression of India by visiting its historical and religious landmarks and local markets.

Jaipur, the famous "pink city", is best-known for its elegant architecture like the famous "Palace of Wind" (Hawa Mahal). If you don't have enough time for Jaipur, then visit Delhi and Agra — capital city and Taj Mahal — the absolute highlights, which takes about 5 days.

India’s Golden Triangle is a famous tourist route that got its name from the triangular shape formed by the three cities when you connect them on a map.

This route will bring you along spectacular forts , architectural marvels and one of the seven wonders of the world – the famous Taj Mahal .

The Golden Triangle is perfect for you if you want to see some of India’s highlights and get a taste of what this country is all about. It includes some of India’s best cultural destinations . This being said, India is a huge country that’s incredibly diverse and you could easily spend a lifetime exploring everything it has to offer.

But without further ado, here’s the 4, 5 or 6-day itinerary for the wonderful Golden Triangle of India, one of Asia’s cheapest destinations .

Itinerary for India’s Golden Triangle in 4, 5 or 6 days

This India Golden Triangle itinerary is pretty straightforward. It’s ordered by day and includes everything you need to know to do this trip independently.

Although this itinerary can be done in 4 days if you’re short on time, I would recommend doing it in 5 or 6 days to get the most out of it.

I’ve included a map and a day-to-day schedule (for 4, 5 and 6 days) a the end of this post. I hope this will make it a little bit easier for you to plan your trip.

Day 1: Delhi

This itinerary starts in Delhi, the capital, which is where most people will begin their journey in India.

Contrary to its reputation – because let’s be honest, Delhi doesn’t have the best reputation out there – this city has a lot to offer! India’s vibrant capital is full of beautiful temples and other buildings, including some of the most famous landmarks in India .

After hearing so many horror stories about this city , I was actually pleasantly surprised when I visited Delhi for the first time! However, I have to admit that it’s not all rainbows and sunshine and that there are plenty of scams here. Don’t keep this from visiting Delhi, however, as there are some truly magnificent things to see here!

But I’m drifting off.

It’s good to start the first day early, especially if you only have 4 or 5 days to spend on this Indian Golden Triangle itinerary. This way, you will be able to cover a fair part of Delhi’s most beautiful and interesting places.

Highlights of Delhi:

• Red Fort: This enormous fort was built in the 17th century and it was once the residence of the Mughal Emperors. You will find some beautiful structures and an enormous garden here.
• Humayun’s Tomb: Humayun’s Tomb was the first garden tomb in the Indian subcontinent. It was built in 1570 and, back then, it was grander than any other mausoleum ever built in the Islamic world. This tomb later inspired the construction of the beautiful Taj Mahal.
• Lotus Temple: The Lotus Temple is a unique piece of architecture that was built in 1986. This lotus-shaped temple is a Bahá’í House of Worship. • Chandni Chowk: Head to this bustling market to get a real feel of Delhi. This is one of the city’s oldest and busiest markets and it’s full of merchants selling anything from spices to saris. You may just find the perfect Indian souvenir here!

Day 2: Delhi to Agra & Agra fort

Today, you will have to make your way from Delhi to Agra, which is home to the famous Taj Mahal . I went from one city to another by train but you will find the other ways to travel from Delhi to Agra later in this post.

It takes about 4 hours to travel between these cities. So if you leave in the morning, you will have time left to visit Agra Fort in the afternoon – and no, you don’t want to head straight to the Taj Mahal as the best time to visit it is at sunrise!

Agra Fort is the city’s second most popular tourist attraction. This gigantic landmark is also called the Red Fort , just like the one in Delhi. It was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573 and served as the residence of the Mughal Dynasty for 65 years until the capital was moved from Agra to Delhi.

You will find some impressive structures inside Agra Fort and it also offers a unique view of the astonishing Taj Mahal .

Book a ticket for the Taj Mahal

If you haven’t already, you will want to book a ticket for the Taj Mahal today. This can easily be done online. This way, you won’t need to worry about queues and buying tickets tomorrow morning.

Day 3: Taj Mahal

On the third day of this itinerary for the Golden Triangle of India, we’re going to wake up super early to head to the Taj Mahal for sunrise. This place is on top of many traveller’s Indian travel bucket lists !

The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and that’s the perfect time to arrive. What time exactly that is, however, varies according to the season. So it’s good to check with your hotel the day before.

This wonder of the world was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away in 1631. It’s a spectacular piece of architecture that’s almost completely symmetrical !

The only exception is Shah Jahan’s cenotaph (empty grave). It can be found next to his wife’s cenotaph inside the mausoleum. It’s widely believed that this is not where the emperor’s cenotaph was meant to be.

Make sure to read my tips for visiting the Taj Mahal before your visit. There are quite some things to know in order to make the most of it… and to be allowed inside in the first place.

Other things to do in Agra

Here are some other things to do in Agra if you would like to spend more time here. I have to admit that Agra is not my favourite city in India, though. I thought the merchants were more aggressive here compared to any other place in India (which kind of says a lot).

• Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah: Often called the “baby Taj Mahal”, this was the first mausoleum in India that was made entirely of marble. It was built at the demand of Nur Jahan, the wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, in memory of her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. The latter’s title was Itmad-ud-Daulah, hence the name of the Baby Taj.
• Metabh Bagh: This park will offer you a different view of the Taj Mahal. It’s located across the river on the backside of this wonder of the world. Note that you do have to pay a fee in order to enter this park.
• I won’t include Agra Fort here (well, technically I just did), as I mentioned it on day 2 of this Golden Triangle itinerary.

Agra to Jaipur

After spending the day (or half a day) in Agra, it’s time to head to Jaipur, the so-called pink city of India. Here, you will find some of Rajasthan’s most important historical landmarks . It takes about 4 hours to get from Agra to Jaipur.

I headed there by train, but there are other ways to get there too (you will find these later in this post). Don’t forget to book your tickets in advance if you’re taking the train, though (but more about this later too).

Day 4 (and 5, optional): Jaipur

Contrary to Delhi and Agra, which are in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur is in Rajasthan , a state that’s famous for its forts and palaces. This city is also called the “pink city” due to its pink (actually it’s more salmon orange) coloured buildings.

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and it’s a nice introduction to the state. It boasts an interesting culture and it’s home to some astonishing, salmon-orange landmarks .

Highlights of Jaipur

• Hawa Mahal: This building has one of the most beautiful facades I’ve ever seen and it’s a place you absolutely cannot miss on a visit to Jaipur! The Hawa Mahal was constructed in 1799 by Kachhwaha ruler Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Its purpose was to provide royal women with a view of everyday life through the 953 windows. These women could not appear in public, after all.
• Amer Fort: The enormous Amer Fort was completed in 1599 and it’s one of the most famous forts in the state of Rajasthan . You will see some pretty amazing architecture here, including the stunning Sheesh Mahal , and you will also have a chance to learn more about the interesting history of this state.
• City Palace: Jaipur’s City Palace is another piece of beautiful architecture that cannot be missed during a visit to the pink city. It was built in 1727 when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II moved the capital from Amer to Jaipur.
• Patrika Gate: If you’re into photography, you will LOVE Patrika Gate . This colourful gate serves as an entrance to Jawahar Circle Garden and it’s incredibly photogenic. Surprisingly, this is also one of Jaipur’s newest attractions. It was only built a couple of years ago, in 2016, but it’s already one of the city’s highlights.

Back to Delhi

If you only have 4 days to spend on the Golden Triangle Route, then it’s time to head back to Delhi this evening .

However, if you have 5 or 6 days , you can spend another day in Jaipur and head back to Delhi in the evening of day 5.

It’s good to know that there are plenty of other great things to do in Jaipur. You could visit other forts, for example, or pay a visit to the Monkey Temple , which is a major Hindu pilgrimage site.

Day 6: Delhi (optional)

If you have 6 days to spend on this Indian Golden Triangle itinerary, you can either spend another day visiting Delhi or do a day trip from Delhi .

There are a ton of things to discover in Delhi but there are also plenty of nice day trips that you can make from this city.

Some of the best day trips from Delhi are Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary , which is great for bird lovers, Vrindavan , the holy city where Krishna spent his childhood according to the legend and Nuh , which is famous for its ancient fort ruins.

If you decide to spend one more day in Delhi, you could head to Qutub Minar , one of the tallest minarets in the world, Akshardham , a beautiful Hindu Temple or the National Gandhi Museum , where you can learn more about Gandhi. But the possibilities are endless!

Although it is possible to do the Golden Triangle in 4 days, I would recommend doing it in at least 5 days.

Best time to visit the Golden Triangle in India

The best time to visit India’s Golden Triangle is between the months of October and March . This is in the Winter when the weather is at its best and it won’t be too hot.

April to June are the Summer months , which will be blistering hot. I was in India in April and decided to escape to the mountains because of the torrid heat. So if you can’t handle the heat quite well (I really underestimated Indian summers) then this is not the best time to go here.

I visited the Golden Triangle during the monsoon , which is from July to October. Although it was still quite hot, it didn’t rain too much.

How to get around

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are three very well-connected cities that are easy to reach. They’re all a 4 to 5-hour journey from one another, so you won’t have to spend too much time on the road (especially not in Indian terms).

How to get from Delhi to Agra, Agra to Jaipur and Jaipur to Delhi

The easiest ways to get from one city to another are the following:

• Train: Taking the train is an easy and cheap option to get around India. Note that you will have to book trains in advance, though, as they tend to fill up quickly. It’s good to know that there are different classes in Indian trains, some have AC and others don’t. Keep this in mind while booking your train.
• Bus: Another option is to take the bus, but this is a less popular one that takes a bit longer. However, if there are no train tickets left, it’s good to know that taking the bus is also an option.
• Private car: A third option is to either hire a car with a driver or rent a car and drive yourself . This is a flexible way to get around but it is more expensive too.
• Tour: If you don’t want to organize things yourself, you could opt for this 6-day Golden Triangle tour that includes Udaipur , the so-called city of lakes.

Tip : Make sure to book your train tickets in advance if you’re getting around by train, as trains tend to fill up quickly in this part of the country. This can easily be done online. 12GoAsia is the only website I could find where you can book tickets with a foreign credit card and it didn’t disappoint!

How to get around in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur

Once you’re in a city, you can easily get around by one of the following options:

• Auto-rickshaw: The easiest way to get around cities is by taking an auto-rickshaw. You can find these nearly everywhere but if you don’t want to haggle, it’s better to book via the Ola app . This app works like Uber and this way, you will get a fair price immediately. Rickshaw drivers are notorious for charging foreigners 10 times the local price, after all.
• Bus: If you want to get around the city using public transportation, you can take the bus. This a very cheap way to get around and there are many public buses in all three of these cities (although I would recommend taking the metro instead of the bus in Delhi).
• Metro: This one is only for Delhi, note that there’s no metro system in Agra and Jaipur. The metro in Delhi, on the other hand, is wonderful (I’m a big fan)! It has AC, it’s cheap and it’s the fastest way to get from one place to another as there’s a lot of traffic in Delhi.

Golden Triangle itinerary in India: Final thoughts

India’s Golden Triangle is a route that includes some of the country’s most spectacular landmarks. This itinerary is perfect for first-timers who want to get a taste of what this country is all about.

Another thing that’s nice about this route is that the distances aren’t too big (because India, you are a HUGE country). But even by covering short distances, you will get to see many incredible forts, beautiful palaces and one of the seven wonders of the world.

During my visit to the Golden Triangle, my jaw literally dropped a couple of times. Not only is the architecture stunning, but the culture is fascinating too, which makes for an unforgettable trip!

We have already done golden triangle, Kerala and Goa

Our trip needs to include

4-5 days in Lakshadweep

week in our family village near Surat , gujerat.

We are in our 60s but all pretty good travellers. Would like to visit some newer big temples and some wildlife, otherwise open to anything. Some suggestions of an itinerary would be appreciated and a bonus if you could suggest some agents who could arrange this for us. Thank you

We did a month in Feb/Mar as follows:

Mumbai > Goa (you could skip this!) > Hampi (magical ruins) > Hyderabad (relatively new temple at Birla Mandir , plus old city and palaces) > Kanha NP (tigers!) > Pench NP > Aurangabad (Ajanta & Ellora) > Mumbai. I arranged it all myself using booking.com and irctc.co.in.

The outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through the nation’s poultry farms is the worst in US history. But scientists say it’s now starting to spread into places and species it’s never been before.

Today, my colleague, Emily Anthes, explains.

Emily, welcome back to the show.

Thanks for having me. Happy to be here.

So, Emily, we’ve been talking here on “The Daily” about prices of things and how they’ve gotten so high, mostly in the context of inflation episodes. And one of the items that keeps coming up is eggs. Egg prices were through the roof last year, and we learned it was related to this. Avian flu has been surging in the United States. You’ve been covering this. Tell us what’s happening.

Yes, so I have been covering this virus for the last few years. And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

OK, so bird flu, though, isn’t new. I mean I remember hearing about cases in Asia in the ‘90s. Remind us how it began.

Bird flu refers to a bunch of different viruses that are adapted to spread best in birds. Wild water birds, in particular, are known for carrying these viruses. And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks.

And how are these outbreaks caused?

So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus. But they shed it. So as they’re traveling over a poultry farm maybe, if they happen to go to the bathroom in a pond that the chickens on the farm are using or eat some of the feed that chickens on the farm are eating, they can leave the virus behind.

And the virus can get into chickens. In some cases, it causes mild illness. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza. But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry.

OK, so the virus comes through wild birds, but gets into farms like this, as you’re describing. How have farms traditionally handled outbreaks, when they do happen?

Well, because this threat isn’t new, there is a pretty well-established playbook for containing outbreaks. It’s sometimes known as stamping out. And brutally, what it means is killing the birds. So the virus is so deadly in this highly pathogenic form that it’s sort of destined to kill all the birds on a farm anyway once it gets in. So the response has traditionally been to proactively depopulate or cull all the birds, so it doesn’t have a chance to spread.

So that’s pretty costly for farmers.

It is. Although the US has a program where it will reimburse farmers for their losses. And the way these reimbursements work is they will reimburse farmers only for the birds that are proactively culled, and not for those who die naturally from the virus. And the thinking behind that is it’s a way to incentivize farmers to report outbreaks early.

So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. So we know how to deal with them. But what about now? Tell me about this new strain.

So this new version of the virus, it emerged in 2020.

After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu.

And pretty quickly it became clear that a couple things set it apart.

A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

This virus, for whatever reason, seemed very good at infecting all sorts of wild birds that we don’t normally associate with bird flu.

[BIRD CRYING]

He was kind of stepping, and then falling over, and using its wing to right itself.

Things like eagles and condors and pelicans.

We just lost a parliament of owls in Minneapolis.

Yeah, a couple of high profile nests.

And also in the past, wild birds have not traditionally gotten very sick from this virus. And this version of the virus not only spread widely through the wild bird population, but it proved to be devastating.

The washing up along the East Coast of the country from Scotland down to Suffolk.

We were hearing about mass die-offs of seabirds in Europe by the hundreds and the thousands.

And the bodies of the dead dot the island wherever you look.

Wow. OK. So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. But it’s even more deadly.

Absolutely. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history. So more than 90 million birds in the US have died as a result of this virus.

90 million birds.

Yes, and I should be clear that represents two things. So some of those birds are birds who naturally got infected and died from the virus. But the vast majority of them are birds that were proactively culled. What it adds up to is, is 90 million farmed birds in the US have died since this virus emerged. And it’s not just a chicken problem. Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock.

And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented.

So it’s showing up at Dairy farms now. You’re saying that bird flu has now spread to cows. How did that happen?

So we don’t know exactly how cows were first infected, but most scientists’ best guess is that maybe an infected wild bird that was migrating shed the virus into some cattle feed or a pasture or a pond, and cattle picked it up. The good news is they don’t seem to get nearly as sick as chickens do. They are generally making full recoveries on their own in a couple of weeks.

OK, so no mass culling of cows?

No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow. We don’t know exactly how that’s happening yet. But anytime you see cow-to-cow or mammal-to-mammal transmission, that’s a big concern.

And why is that exactly?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned.

And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there. And that’s what happens when this virus gets into wild animals, vast populations that we can’t control.

So, Emily, you said that another threat was the threat of flu in wild animal populations. Clearly, of course, it’s already in wild birds. Where else has it gone?

Well, the reason it’s become such a threat is because of how widespread it’s become in wild birds. So they keep reintroducing it to wild animal populations pretty much anywhere they go. So we’ve seen the virus repeatedly pop up in all sorts of animals that you might figure would eat a wild bird, so foxes, bobcats, bears. We actually saw it in a polar bear, raccoons. So a lot of carnivores and scavengers.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places.

And most devastatingly, we’ve seen enormous outbreaks in other sorts of marine mammals, especially sea lions and seals.

So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall. My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli and I were talking to some scientists in South America who described to us what they called a scene from hell, of walking out onto a beach in Argentina that is normally crowded with chaotic, living, breathing, breeding, elephant seals — and the beach just being covered by carcass, after carcass, after carcass.

Mostly carcasses of young newborn pups. The virus seemed to have a mortality rate of 95 percent in these elephant seal pups, and they estimated that it might have killed more than 17,000 of the pups that were born last year. So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before.

And why is it so far reaching, Emily? I mean, what explains these mass die-offs?

There are probably a few explanations. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches. These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity.

There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

So basically, this virus is spreading to places it’s never been before, kind of virgin snow territory, where animals just don’t have the immunity against it. And once it gets into a population packed on a beach, say, of elephant seals, it’s just like a knife through butter.

Absolutely. And an even more extreme example of that is what we’re starting to see happen in Antarctica, where there’s never been a bird flu outbreak before until last fall, for the first time, this virus reached the Antarctic mainland. And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before.

And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be. But penguins also, of course, are known for breeding in these large colonies.

Probably. don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins.

Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying.

Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark. They’re talking about the virus spreading through wild animal populations so quickly and so ferociously that they’re calling it an ecological disaster.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. But I think that we should be paying a lot of attention to how this virus is moving through animal populations, how quickly it’s moving through animal populations, and the opportunities that it is giving the virus to evolve into something that poses a much bigger threat to human health.

So the way it’s spreading in wild animals, even in remote places like Antarctica, that’s important to watch, at least in part because there’s a real danger to people here.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions. Scientists are already seeing evidence that the virus is adapting as it passes from marine mammal to marine mammal. And that could turn it into a virus that’s also better at spreading between people.

And if somebody walks out onto a beach and touches a dead sea lion, if their dog starts playing with a sea lion carcass, you could imagine that this virus could make its way out of marine mammals and into the human population. And if it’s this mammalian adapted version of the virus that makes its way out, that could be a bigger threat to human health.

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people.

Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now.

Right. I like that, a specialist in mammals. So what can we do to contain this virus?

Well, scientists are exploring new options. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether we should start vaccinating chickens in the US. The government, USDA labs, have been testing some poultry vaccines. It’s probably scientifically feasible. There are challenges there, both in terms of logistics — just how would you go about vaccinating billions of chickens every year. There are also trade questions. Traditionally, a lot of countries have not been willing to accept poultry products from countries that vaccinate their poultry.

And there’s concern about whether the virus might spread undetected in flocks that are vaccinated. So as we saw with COVID, the vaccine can sometimes stop you from getting sick, but it doesn’t necessarily stop infection. And so countries are worried they might unknowingly import products that are harboring the virus.

And what about among wild animals? I mean, how do you even begin to get your head around that?

Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus.

So, Emily, we started this conversation with a kind of curiosity that “The Daily” had about the price of eggs. And then you explained the bird flu to us. And then somehow we ended up learning about an ecological disaster that’s unfolding all around us, and potentially the source of the next human pandemic. That is pretty scary.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. But this is why scientists are concerned and why they think it’s really important to keep a very close eye on what’s happening both on farms and off farms, as this virus spreads through all sorts of animal populations.

One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

We just don’t entirely know how this is going to play out. Flu is a very difficult, wily foe. And so that’s one reason scientists are trying to keep such a close, attentive eye on what’s happening.
