In this article, we'll cover all the transportation options you'll have, and we'll also give you a few tips of where to go on the island.

How to get to Ibiza from Barcelona?

There are several ways to travel from Barcelona to Ibiza. The most popular and fastest option is taking a direct flight from El Prat Airport. Additionally, there is an alternative route available where you can travel to Valencia using either a bus or train connection and then take a ferry to the island.

Flights from Barcelona to Ibiza

Every day, numerous flights operate between Barcelona (El Prat Airport) and Ibiza, providing swift transportation to the island. On average, the flight duration is just one hour, ensuring a quick and convenient journey. From 06:00 to 22:00, you can typically find at least two flights per hour, offering passengers a wide range of departure options throughout the day.

Ibiza, along with Majorca, Minorca and Formentera, is part of the Spanish archipelago known as the Balearics, a small group of islands about 215km from Barcelona and the Costa Brava across the Mediterranean sea. Known as “The White Isle”, Ibiza is renowned for its natural beauty, sandy beaches, picturesque Old Town – and world-famous party scene. During summer clubbers congregate from the four corners of the globe to dance all night – and sometimes all day too – at superclubs like Pacha, Privilege, Amnesia, Space and DC10. Chances are that if you’re reading this, you’re planning on joining them! Read on for tips on Ibiza’s attractions, nightlife and on getting to the island by air or boat from Barcelona.

Ibiza Attractions

Life on Eivissa (as it’s known in Catalan/Spanish) takes place predominantly in the two major towns of Sant Antoni and Eivissa Town. Sant Antoni is a bustling resort town made infamous not so long ago by TV documentaries such as  Ibiza Uncovered , which charted the drunken antics of holiday makers running riot… and whilst there is a tacky element to the plethora of low to midrange high rise, tattoo parlours and bars offering cut price drinks, there are some must-see places too. After all this is the town where the legendary  Cafe del Mar  is located: every night, in what has become one of the island’s most celebrated rituals, assorted clubbers, hippies and jetsetters come to see the sunset over the Mediterranean as DJs play chill out tunes from Cafe del Mar, Cafe Mambo and other trendy bars overlooking the sea. Those who can’t afford the expensive drinks at the cafes, sit on the rocks instead and simply enjoy the vibe, created by the tunes, people and hippy entertainers such as fire jugglers and bongo drummers.

On the other side of the isle, Ibiza’s Old Town is undoubtedly a much more beautiful base for a stay. The majestic  Dalt Vila fortress  sits atop the city, below which winding medieval cobbled street unravel. This is where the locals live and hang out, and as well as more traditional cafes and restaurants you’ll also find hip boutique stores, art galleries and trendy bars (including gay bars!). The Old Town harbour is also the epicentre of the  Ibiza sailing scene , and this is where celebs pull up in their super yachts, adding more than a touch of glamour to the island’s capital.

If you thought that  the nightlife in Barcelona  was crazy, then you’re going to be blown away by the mischief and the mayhem and the madness that makes up the Ibiza party scene. Superclubs like  Pacha ,  Amnesia ,  Privilege ,  Space  and  DC10  have become legendary venues for dance music fans across the world and every year superstar DJs take up residence or make flying visits to rock parties that often last from dawn til dawn. Nights out don’t come cheap however, with some of the biggest clubs charging an eye-watering 50 euros for entry (drinks are ridiculously-priced too) so it’s a good idea to space out visits to the big name nightclubs with beach parties on the likes of Playa D’en Bossa or simply bar-crawling in Sant Antoni. There’s always something going on and you can often get reduced tickets from sales reps on the street/beaches as well. Just save up some cash!

Getting to Ibiza

There are two ways to get to any island (we’re not including swimming) and they are by plane and by boat. Regular flights leave from Barcelona to Ibiza / Eivissa and in fact they can be considerably cheaper than going by ferry, provided you book in advance. Flying week days or off season will also seriously reduce your costs, just as flying Friday night / Saturday morning in July / August will increase them! (Many Barcelonins head over to Ibiza for the weekend during summer). Who flies? Try these guys:  www.vueling.com ,  www.spanair.com ,  www.iberia.com ,  www.air-europa.com ,  www.ryanair.com . It’s also worth keeping an eye out in your local travel agent or online for all inclusive deals to Ibiza with flights and accommodation as these can often work out cheaper when packaged together.

Taking the ferry is the alternative to flying, and whilst it’s harder to get a great deal, and it is often the best option if you’re booking last minute as flight prices may be sky high by then (pun intended). Ferries leave every day from Barcelona port, normally late at night (around 11pm) and timed to arrive in Ibiza Old Town Port at around midday the following day. How to get from Barcelona to Ibiza

Best barcelona to ibiza travel tips.

The Whitlock had booked a couple of private tours with us, when they emailed me asking for some advice. They were planning how to travel from Barcelona to Ibiza, where they had found some great Ibiza all inclusive hotels , but they were finding some very conflicting information online… 

Some websites said you could get there by train and bus, and that sounded like a great option because Mr. Whitlock prefers to avoid airplanes whenever it’s possible.  However they weren’t able to find any airlines or train schedules online. Could I help? 

I need to say I was dumbfounded: Ibiza is… an island! Of course there is no train or road taking you there from Barcelona! So after confirming to them that the only way was flying or sailing, I decided to use my own blog to put some order on the net.

Barcelona to Ibiza by train or car: Debunking the myth

Ibiza is the third largest island of the Balearic Archipelago. And by definition, it's surrounded by water: the salted water of the Mediterranean Sea. And I'm afraid this isn't London-Paris: there's no Spanish version of the Channel Tunnel, nor plans to build it.

But I was certainly intrigued (and equally mad)… How could Google be ranking in the top positions a site that recommended getting from Barcelona (Spain) to Ibiza (Spain) by car, train or bus? And the answer is simple: some travel websites just write with SEO in mind, with little experience in the field and some disregard for user experience (I’m looking at you, rome2rio!).

If you are new to what SEO means, it’s all the little tricks that make Google algorithms like you. So these guys realized there were online searches for Barcelona to Ibiza train rides and wrote about how to go from Barcelona to… the Ibiza metro station in Madrid! Not the island, but a random subway station named like the island! No wonder my clients were confused!

From Barcelona to Ibiza by sea

What you need to know about barcelona to ibiza ferries.

The cheapest options are usually the seats with no privacy. A good reason to go by ferry is if you have a vehicle that you want to take to Ibiza. Otherwise you’ll end up having to rent a car in the island, and the additional cost is higher than the price of taking your car with you on the ferry.

How far is it ? 156 nautical miles – which is equivalent to 289 km or 179.5 miles.

How long does it take ? It’s an overnight sail that takes 8 to 9 hours. I’m afraid there’s no fast ferry connecting Barcelona and Ibiza.

Where do they depart from ? Port de Barcelona, from the Ferries terminal. It’s walking distance from Columbus monument at the end of La Rambla (but if you are carrying luggage you’d rather take a taxi).

Where do they arrive to ? Puerto de Ibiza, Botafoc pier. The Ibiza port is also located right next to the town center.

How often do they sail ? There are ferries pretty much every day, departing Barcelona in the evening and arriving in the morning.

Is it possible to bring a vehicle on board ? Yes, the ferries accept electric scooters, bicycles, motorbikes, cars, vans and RVs (for an additional fee). Check out with the company how often do you need to arrive to board with your vehicle and for the instructions on how to safely secure it for the sail.

Are there luggage restrictions ? Yes, just like for airplanes, the ferry companies set up a weight limit for the amount of luggage you can take on board if you aren’t traveling with a vehicle but occupying a seat.

Are there cabins ? Yes. Trasmed has private cabins for 2 to 4 people. Balearia has private standard cabins with 4 seats as well as private VIP cabins with king size bed for 2 people.

Other ways to get from Barcelona to Ibiza by sea

• Sail boat . If you have all the time in the world and no hurry to get to Ibiza, there are companies such as Vientoaparente that organize week-long vacations on a sailing boat departing from Barcelona and returning, but spending most days exploring Ibiza and the smaller islands around it.

• What about party boats ? While that’d be the dream of many young adults… I’m afraid I couldn’t find any company organizing party boats between Barcelona and Ibiza… There are companies organizing party boat outings that last a few hours, departing from both cities, though.

Should you go from Valencia, Spain?

But if you are in Barcelona should you head to Valencia to sail from there towards Ibiza? Sorry, but no, sorry. Yes, the sail is faster, just 2.5 hours. But if you have to drive or take the train from Barcelona, the time you’ll save from the sail ends up wasted getting to Valencia. 

Same goes for the price: you might find a super cheap deal from Valencia, but if you have to pay for the train ride or for gas (that is more expensive in Spain than it is in the US!). So make your calculations carefully, but if you are already in Barcelona, the best way to get from Barcelona to Ibiza is definitely not via Valencia.

What companies fly between Barcelona and Ibiza ? There are two companies that operate flights: the low cost airlines Ryanair and Vueling. Plus Vueling shares their flights with Iberia and Qatar Airways.
