Similar to many other parts of Europe , Iceland has rules in place to help preserve its culture and geographic isolation is also a factor in developing and preserving the country’s cultural qualities. Independence, self-sufficiency and a strong work ethic – traits that allowed this northern island to flourish in challenging conditions – continue to be highly valued today.

Icelandic culture and customs are full of myths and legends, many with a connection to Christian and pagan values. Folk tales of elves, gnomes, fairies and trolls still circulate, and whether or not the locals continue telling these to unlock the secrets of the past, or simply in jest, they’re definitely worth listening to. But when news outlets report on road plans being changed to avoid disrupting an elfin church, it’s easy to believe that this unusual country and its magical landscapes are a product of what lies ‘hidden’ in its mysterious depths.

Today, Iceland is a highly modern and progressive society. It is consistently rated as having the smallest gender pay gap and strong LGBTQIA+ rights representation in the parliament and media. It’s also one of the greenest countries in the world, with almost all energy coming from renewable resources such as hydropower and geothermal.

History and government

Pre-modern history.

This island nation was settled by Vikings in the ninth century, with much of the early literature recognizing Norse sailor Ingolfur Arnason as the first settler of Iceland, founding Reykjavik in AD874 along with his wife and brother. Icelanders remain proud to this day of their Viking heritage. The Icelandic language, for example, is so similar to the Old Norse spoken during Viking times that Icelanders can still read and understand the original Icelandic sagas.

A book of settlements titled Landnamabok, compiled in the 12th century, documents the names and other details of nearly 400 original settlers of Iceland who arrived in the ninth and tenth centuries. The document tells of a Norse Viking called Floki who sailed to Iceland for fishing and farming, however, due to his livestock not surviving in the conditions, had to return to his home in Norway. After heading up a mountain and looking over a fjord full of sea ice, he named this land Iceland.

In AD930, an Icelandic General Assembly was established and was deemed a Christian settlement less than a century later. Settlers and slaves brought to Iceland by Scandinavians were of Irish and Norse descent, and although some still debate which communities influenced the identity we now know to be Icelandic, the first distinctive text documenting ‘Icelandic-ness’ is said to be a rule book of sorts – the First Grammatical Treatise.

20th century and today

After long periods under Norwegian and Danish rule, Iceland was recognized as a sovereign state in 1918. On 17 June 1944, Iceland became an independent republic. It has a multi-party parliamentary system and a written constitution. The parliament is still called Althingi after its medieval General Assembly.

Many of Iceland’s major industries stem from its location and surrounding natural resources. Tourism aside, fishing and seafood products make up much of the country’s exports and employ a majority of the workforce along with agriculture and farming. Recent investment in greenhouses and geothermal energy has seen Iceland become increasingly self-sufficient, growing products that usually do not fare well in icy climates, such as potatoes, tomatoes and potted plants. Other food is imported along with many consumer goods.

Eating and drinking

Flanked by the ocean and inhabited by almost twice the amount of sheep as humans, Iceland understandably boasts a cuisine dominated by seafood and local lamb.

The country’s diet relies on plenty of potatoes and lamb, but seafood trumps all – sourced fresh year-round from the waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic and prepared in a variety of ways. Be sure to try Hardfiskur – a salty fish jerky, best enjoyed buttered.

Sheep and cows are free-range and fed chemical-free diets, making lamb and dairy products exceptionally good here. One of the best ways to enjoy the produce on offer is to warm yourself up from the inside out with a hearty meat soup: a mixture of lamb, root vegetables, herbs, and rice.

Skyr, a popular yogurt that is technically a cheese, is also a must-try in all its variety of flavors. Eat it like the locals do at any time of the day – for breakfast, as a snack, as a dipping sauce, in drink form (called drykkur), or as a dessert topping.

Surprisingly, hot dogs are Iceland’s most iconic fast food. Widely available, a hot dog is probably the cheapest meal you’ll have in Iceland. Order one with all the toppings – sweet mustard, ketchup, raw onions, deep-fried onions, and aioli.

Rye bread (also known as rugbraud) and butter is a common side to most meals in Iceland, but the preferred way of cooking the loaves are quite unique. Traditionally, the bread is buried near a natural hot spring, sprinkled with sugar, and left to gently steam for up to 24 hours. The end result is dense, cake-like bread that has a slightly sweet taste. Enjoy it with a traditional Icelandic soup, smoked lamb, or, of course, fish.

Name a food and chances are Icelanders have tried to add licorice to it. Black licorice is beloved by locals and found in a wide range of desserts and candy bars. During your time here, head to Valdis in Reykjavik to test out a cone filled with salted black licorice ice cream. Even if the weather’s cold, the ice cream joints will be open!

The weird and wacky

Icelanders have a reputation for serving up some of the most unusual food in the world – boiled sheep’s head, fermented shark known as harkarl, ram testicles and smoked puffin to name a few. Although the country’s isolation and harsh winters once meant these foods were eaten out of necessity, today most of these ‘delicacies’ are only prepared to shock tourists. Try if you dare, but we suggest sticking to the common foods that locals eat.

Alcohol can be expensive in Iceland and is best bought at the duty-free shop. Although forms of prohibition existed until 1989, alcohol is now widely available all over the country in state-run liquor stores. If you’re feeling brave, try the local brew, Brennivin – a potent, traditional caraway-flavored schnapps nicknamed ‘black death’.

Geography and environment

Iceland possesses some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders and unique landscapes. From active volcanoes to vast ice fields, bubbling hot springs and enormous glaciers, these dramatic contrasts have earned Iceland the nickname of the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’.

Many of these geological features are products of geographical location – on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates intersect and their movements away from each other create volcanic activity. The country is covered by moss-carpeted lava fields, soaring fjords, incredible waterfalls and dramatic geysers, all of which add to Iceland’s otherworldly look.

The country is also the perfect spot to see the Northern Lights. From September to March, you’ll have the best chance to view this spectacular natural light show when the skies are clear and auroral activity is high. But don’t let that stop you from visiting in other seasons – Iceland’s natural wonders are truly year-round attractions.

1. Northern Lights

The Northern Hemisphere's Aurora Borealis has captivated and intrigued travelers for years. Any winter tour of Iceland absolutely must include a chance to see the Northern Lights. This natural light display that runs along magnetic fields often brings hypnotic green, yellow and red shades to the night sky in Iceland from September to March. As one of nature's most magnificent triumphs, this is one unforgettable spectacle.

2. Gullfoss

Otherwise known as Golden Falls, this spectacular three-tiered waterfall drops suddenly into a deep cavern. The falls are surrounded by lush, green countryside, and the rainbows created by the mist and spray provide brilliant photo opportunities.

3. Lake Myvatn

This part of northern Iceland was born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and continues to be shaped by volcanic activity to this day. The combination of strange lava formations, thermal caves and a sprawling lake dotted with craters and rising rocks makes for an eerie yet beautiful landscape.

4. Jokulsarlon

Literally translating to ‘glacial river lagoon’, this monumental glacier lake is the largest in Iceland. Featuring a parade of large and small blue icebergs floating on and under the pure, icy water, this lagoon is so beautiful that it has been used as a backdrop for Hollywood films, a set for reality television shows and in a starring role on a postage stamp!

Iceland is notorious for being an expensive destination. Travelling on a budget here is difficult but can be done. Head to Bonus – Iceland’s discount grocery store – so you can cook rather than eat out for each meal. The duty-free store at Keflavik International Airport is the best place to pick up a bottle of Icelandic alcohol such as Brennivin liquor, Reyka vodka or Viking Gold beer for a fraction of the price you’d find elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to travel as a group, as operators can get better rates than a single traveler at hotels and restaurants, plus they know all the local hotspots.

If you’d like to take home Icelandic local specialties, Reykjavik is the best place to shop. Some of the country’s coolest retailers can be found on Laugavegur, one of the oldest shopping streets. Here you can browse clothing from quirky local designers alongside traditional lambswool sweaters, as well as tourist shops selling plastic Viking hats and puffin magnets. For smaller boutiques selling local art, head to Skolavordustigur.

Festival and events

Despite the long and dark winters, Icelanders are among the happiest people in the world. Why? One reason is that they understand the importance of getting together and having a good time, even if it’s pitch black outside. There are many celebrations to join in on throughout the year, but here are a few to look out for:

Winter Lights Festival

Every year, buildings around Reykjavik light up at night to celebrate both the winter world and the growing light after a long period of darkness. The Winter Lights Festival uses many public buildings and all major museums and thermal pools to illuminate the city with lighting designs and art installations as a way to get people thawed out after a long winter.

This annual mid-winter feast in January or February is one of Iceland’s oldest festivals, dating back to Viking days. Fearless eaters can find restaurants in Reykjavik offering special Thorrablot dinners of boiled sheep’s head, rotten shark’s meat, and cured ram testicles. If you can, try to snag an invitation to a local’s house, where celebrations tend to be more festive and involve lots of singing, dancing, and drinking.

Viking Festival

Modern-day Vikings in traditional garb flock to Hafnarfjorour each June for a festival Leif Erikson would approve of. Swordfights, archery, axe throwing, a traditional market, concerts, and a proper Viking feast are all part of the festivities.

National Day

1944 marks the year that Iceland became a republic after an overwhelming majority of the citizens voted for independence. The deciding referendum took place between May 20 and 23 that year; however, Iceland’s National day is celebrated on June 17th – the birthday of the man who originally led the movement in the late 19th century, Jon Sigurdsson. There are parades all around the country, usually with brass bands and marching horses. Music food, fireworks, and street parties – you get it, they’re a patriotic bunch.

Dalvik Fiskidagurinn Mikli (The Great Fish Day)

Each August, the northern fishing village of Dalvik invites you to a free, all-you-can-eat fish and seafood buffet – held for no reason other than to get people together over a delicious meal. You might come for the free food, but you’ll stay for the company.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Deciding what you want to see in Iceland will give you a better idea of when is the best time to travel. Wanting to get active around the countryside and see waterfalls and wildlife? The warmer spring and summer months are probably ideal. Prefer to soak in the geothermal lagoons and get a chance to see the Northern Lights? Well, likely the cooler months – with their longer nights – are best for you.

Spring and summer are considered optimal times to visit Iceland if green landscapes and balmy days are your thing. The early spring months bring warmer days, while summer offers long daylight hours with only short nights. In the summer season, July and August are the warmest months and the busiest time for tourists.

In September, tourism tends to slow down as the weather becomes unpredictable and the countryside is usually less accessible. However, there are plenty of attractions for the off-peak traveler, including the beauty of fall colors and, of course, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

As you might expect, winters in Iceland can be challenging. During late December there are about four-and-a-half hours of daylight and it's often cloudy. In January, there are on average three sunny days in Reykjavík, with temperatures hovering around freezing point, often with chilling winds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Iceland, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Iceland, including citizens of South Africa.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Is tipping customary in Iceland?

Tipping isn't expected in Iceland. Hotels, restaurants and cafes already include a service fee and consumption taxes (VAT) in the bill, so tipping extra isn't necessary. However, feel free to leave a small amount if your experience has been particularly good, especially for assistance provided by drivers, tour leaders or service workers.

What is the internet access like in Iceland?

Travelers will be able to access the internet in cybercafes and at wi-fi hotspots in Iceland's cities and large towns. Rural and remote areas may have less internet access, so be prepared when traveling away from the city.

Most accommodation and eateries in Iceland offer wi-fi access, which is usually free to use with a code. If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card with a data package.

Many Icelandic libraries and tourist information offices have shared computers for public internet access if you are without a device to connect to wi-fi. Sometimes a small fee is charged for this service.

Can I use my cell phone while in Iceland?

Travelers can use their cell phones in Iceland's main cities and towns, though remote and isolated areas may have inferior cell reception.

If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card for the duration of your journey. This will likely be the cheapest way to use your phone in Iceland.

What are the toilets like in Iceland?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in Iceland.

In terms of public toilets, Reykjavik and other major towns and cities have some, but along highways and at many tourist destinations – especially campgrounds and natural attractions – there is a lack of facilities. Expect to pay a small fee when visiting public toilets and, in busy months, expect queues in main tourist areas.

There have been recent occurrences of tourists resorting to other means in remote places and near tourist sites. We recommend being prepared and talking to your group leader if you have any concerns.

Iceland's unit of currency is the krona. Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

• Hotdog = ISK 400-600
• Glass of beer = ISK 1,100-1,500

Can I drink the water in Iceland?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Iceland unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Iceland?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland and are used frequently by locals to pay for just about anything. Paying with a credit card at shops, guesthouses, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and on taxi rides shouldn't present a problem. Iceland is almost a cashless society, so cards are the best option; however, a lot of payments will require your four-digit PIN, so be sure to know this before you leave home.

What is ATM access like in Iceland?

ATMs are usually easy to find in Iceland's cities and villages and generally accept most foreign cards.

What is the weather like in Iceland?

Iceland’s temperatures are cool and do vary throughout the year. In winter months, minimum temperatures plummet to below freezing. In Reykjavik, summer temperatures average at around 52°F, while winter maximums are approximately 32°F. Rainfall is quite consistent throughout the year; between 25–50 mm per month, with most days experiencing some rainfall.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe country to travel to and is one of the safest countries in the world.

Is Iceland safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The people of Iceland have an open and accepting attitude to LGBTQIA+ communities, and Iceland is considered one of the world’s most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries. Since 2006, same-sex couples have had equal access to adoption and IVF, and in 2010 the Icelandic Parliament made a unanimous decision to define marriage as between two individuals. As might be expected in a small country, however, the gay scene is quite low-key, even in Reykjavik.

In 2012, more legislation was passed to formalize the name and identity-changing process for the needs of trans and genderqueer individuals. There is still a way to go to achieve full equality, but Iceland is, in many regards, leading the way globally.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. What to wear in Iceland

In summer, Iceland experiences cool but mild weather throughout the country, with maximum temperatures averaging around 55°F. It’s still important, however, to pack some warm clothing at this time, as temperatures at night can drop quite dramatically. In winter, some days barely reach over 32°F, so preparing for this is crucial. It can be wet and windy, and roads may be iced over, so thermal gear, a waterproof jacket and pants and sturdy walking boots are all highly recommended.

Warsaw, Poland: August 1 - 3

Welcome to Warsaw, the cheapest destination to catch Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in 2024. Today, Warsaw boasts a historic city center designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You won't have to pay a penny to ogle its architectural masterpieces while awaiting the show. In terms of actually seeing Taylor Swift's bejeweled performance on the PGE Narodowy stage in early August, we have good news! According to Islands' research, those who don't have tickets can nab one for as little as $443. Plus, with a safety score of 72.98 out of 100, you can't beat it.

More great news: Your leftover cash will go a long way in Warsaw. Islands' deep dive into meal costs found the average inexpensive dish will set you back $10.19. The current exchange rate (one Polish zloty is 25 cents) means you can dine at a top restaurant like   the bougie  Stolica for a great deal. Too tired to walk to your hotel? Islands' research found that an average taxi costs just $8.19 to travel 5 miles. We found average room rates for a four-star hotel to be $93.92 per night. During our investigation, a stay at the Hampton Inn Warsaw was priced at $121 on August 3, so book soon! 

Gelsenkirchen, Germany: July 17 - 19

There's no chance of experiencing a cruel summer when visiting Gelsenkirchen for Taylor Swift's July concerts. Islands discovered that the cheapest concert ticket price will average around $387. That's not bad compared to the thousands some Swifties shelled out for seats sold by second-hand sellers in the U.S. Set in western Germany, Gelsenkirchen may not be as well known as its more populous counterparts Berlin and Hamburg, but it's packed with budget-friendly things to do and affordable places to stay and eat. According to Islands' research, the average four-star hotel costs $105.19 per night. It'd be best to find a room early as they'll get swept up quickly. 

As for nosh, you won't have to break the bank to eat well here. According to Islands' research, the average cost of a meal in Gelsenkirchen is $17.36.  Cafe del Sol is a fan fave in the city center. It's rated four stars on Google for friendly and fast service, tasty dishes, and good value. A classic burger will set you back about $10. Hoping to find inexpensive transportation from your hotel to the arena? No problem! A 5-mile taxi ride will cost about $21.22 on average. 

Hamburg, Germany: July 23 - 24

Hamburg is a captivating city filled with fabulous shopping, decadent restaurants, eclectic markets, and enough live music to keep your toes tapping from dawn until dusk. No wonder you're looking to grab a cheap ticket to see Taylor Swift perform at the city's Volksparkstadion in late July. We bet you know all too well that this is where major concerts happen, with Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, and, of course, the legendary T. Swift gracing the stage before. And you'll be pleased to know that an inexpensive ticket at this gorgeous venue to see Blondie herself is as low as $411. 

Grab a hotel room as fast as you can — they're bound to go quickly. While an average night costs $166.56 per Islands' research, we found rooms as low as $100 at the Condi Hotel . While in Germany, you should give schnitzel a try.  Frau Möeller won't disappoint with its $14 "breaded pork cutlet." That's below the average meal price of $16.28. If you're looking to hit up a pub or bar after the show, hop in a taxi and check out some of the local establishments. No champagne problems required. According to Islands' research, an average pint of domestic beer will cost only $5.43.

Stockholm, Sweden: May 17 - 19

Once enveloped by Stockholm's friendly nature, avant-garde architecture, and overt creativity, it's easy to feel like the protagonist in a love story. No matter where you turn, something is bound to delight your senses, be it by touch, sight, taste, sound, or smell. When you add the myriad of captivating tourist attractions and 57 bridges that connect this Swedish city's 14 isles, becoming enchanted is the norm. This truly is a collection of  islands for city lovers .

Like Taylor Swift, this waterfront capital likes to make its fans feel at home, tempting travelers with affordable rooms, low transportation costs, and cheap restaurants bursting with menu items designed to please every palate. The average meal at an inexpensive eatery costs $14.21, and a pint of beer is just over $7 ($7.12, to be exact). If you visit the highly-rated Mom's Kitchen , you can enjoy a mouth-wateringly good pasta carbonara for $12.  As for concert tickets, these can be found cheaper than those available in Hamburg or Warsaw. The price for a cheap seat is $406. If you grab a ticket for Swift's last Stockholm show (May 19th), you'll find better hotel rates. At the time of writing, that night at the Quality Hotel Globe  cost $150.

Paris, France: May 9 - 12

So, you are in love and looking for a place romantic enough to ignite your spark and exciting enough to provide endless activities that won't put you in the red. Should you head to France? Mais oui, Paris! In addition to being one of the most amorous cities in the world, the French capital is the cheapest destination to buy an Eras Tour ticket. The cheapest concert ticket price for a seat is a mere $313! Yes, you read that correctly. Now, take a deep breath because you need to calm down.

While these savings will make up for the more expensive hotel rooms you'll find here (our research found that average nightly rates are $242.93), you'll still want to hold on tightly to your extra cash. Keep in mind there are beautiful yet pricey restaurants on or near the Champs-Élysée. Instead, grab a bite at Le Blainville , where you can stuff yourself full of risotto for $13, which is under the average cost of an inexpensive meal, which Islands found to be $19.53.

Munich, Germany: July 27 - 28

Although smaller than Berlin and Hamburg, Munich is vast enough to occupy Swifties of all ages and interests. Located in the south, this German capital boasts colorful markets, historic buildings, world-class museums, fab restaurants, and plenty of beer. Speaking of ale, you're in luck. Summer visitors can enjoy a popular pastime: drinking in a beer garden. Bavaria's biggest beer garden,  Hirschgarten is found right here. It hosts 8,000, so you can share your champagne problems with thousands. According to our research, an average pint in Munich costs just $4.89. And a concert ticket? The cheapest one will cost $472. Not bad!

Next up, you'll need to find accommodations — all that beer may make you fearless, so it's best to sleep it off before hitting the Olympiastadion for hours spent screaming, dancing, crying, or more likely, all of the above. Our research found that four-star hotel rooms average about $186.60 per night, but you can stay at Hotel Obermaier for $170 on July 28 (as of the time of writing). An inexpensive meal will run, on average, $16.29, and a shawarma at Sababa is only $7. If you have time to spare and don't mind driving a rental car through foreign countries, embark on an ultimate Taylor Swift road trip . Organize your playlist (obviously, "Getaway Car" needs to be included) and set your sights on Vienna. The Eras Tour hits this Austrian beauty on August 8-10, so you'll have plenty of time to cover the 250 miles. 

Lisbon, Portugal: May 24 - 25

Lisbon is pretty, friendly, historic, and chock full of fun things to do. It's also an affordable place to visit for any concert buff. This charming Portuguese capital sits on the Atlantic Ocean, presided over by rolling hills, giant stone arches, and the picturesque Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lest you think it will be easy to avoid over-eating in this lovely city, know that Islands found the average cheap meal costs $14.92, and a pint of beer is only $3.26. Dishes at Floresta das Escadinhas cost between $7 and $14, and travelers rave about the friendly staff, tasty food, and signature sardines. Soon, you'll say, "Should've said no," after reaching for another pint, fish, or ice cream cone. 

Expect to pay about $204 for a hotel room, higher during the key concert dates. A room at the well-reviewed Jupiter Lisboa Hotel on May 25 isn't too bad at $226, according to earlier Islands research. Taxis are quite reasonable in Lisbon, so take a taxi to the Estádio Da Luz. The average taxi fare costs about $10.14 per 5 miles, which we found during our study. If you want to  vacation like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce , book a flight to the Azores. Portugal's answer to the superstars' Bahamian holiday spot, Harbour Island, these easy and exotic islands have non-stop flights  that are quite affordable. A round-trip flight from Lisbon to Terciera on Ryanair can be as cheap as $45.

Lyon, France: June 2 - 3

If Paris is France's city for lovers, Lyon is the country's haven for gastronomes. While this elegant waterfront ville is carpeted in hidden passages, intricate churches, ornate fountains, and archeological treasures, the mouth-watering food entices tourists to visit in droves. Well, that and the Eras Tour scheduled to hit the Groupama Stadium on June 2 and 3. The lowest ticket price for this stop on Taylor Swift's journey — Are you ready for it? — is $582. That's more expensive than all but one of the destinations on this list. Try not to worry. You'll be able to save elsewhere during your stay in Lyon. 

Luckily, this pretty city is home to enough budget-friendly accommodations and restaurants that there's no need to pad your wallet before visiting. While our research found that the average four-star hotel will cost about $160.26 a night, you might be able to grab a room at the Hôtel Lyon Métropole for around $150 on June 2. When it comes time to whet your appetite, garnering energy for your all-night dance party, visit Empanadas Club for, you guessed it, empanadas. An order of four will cost about $17.50, which is around the average price of a meal at $16.28, according to our research. Save your feet by taking a taxi to the concert. Fairly inexpensive, the driver will charge an average of $19.41 to drive you 5 miles.

Cardiff, Wales, UK: June 18

Of all the cheap destinations on this list, tickets to Taylor Swift's Era's Tour are most expensive in Cardiff. In this southern Welsh city, the cheapest concert ticket price on average is $679. If you just experienced a blank space in your brain at that number, don't panic. Islands found that important elements like accommodations, restaurant meals, and taxi fares are low enough to make a trip to experience the concert in this Welsh capital worthwhile. A night in a four-star hotel, for instance, averages $118.98. Prices may be higher the night of the Eras Tour, of course, but as of mid-April, you could nab a room right off Cardiff International Airport at Celtic International Hotel for $133. Getting around town won't cost a ton, with taxis charging about $15.86 per 5-mile journey. 

That means you could get to the main tourist sites like Cardiff Castle cheaply. Visiting Wales without eating in a pub is unheard of, so plan your grub stops wisely. Lewis Arms Hotel is a cheap place to enjoy a meal and drinks, with a classic fish and chips dish (including mushy peas) available for $12. An average domestic pint throughout the city will cost about $5.39. With all the money you save, buy a cozy cardigan in one of the local shops. It won't be Taylor Swift-branded, but it will keep you warm on the post-concert journey back to your hotel.

Vienna, Austria: August 8 - 10

What better place to sing with Taylor Swift than Vienna, the city of music? Classical greats like Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Mozart lived and worked in this elegant city, embedding their musical roots throughout this Austrian gem. A true mastermind when it comes to putting on a good concert, Vienna is primed for creative genius in many forms — like Taylor Swift, of course. And Islands' research found that the cheapest average Eras Tour ticket to see the Vienna leg is $496. 

Hotels in Vienna are more expensive than all others on this list of the cheapest destinations to catch Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in 2024, except for Paris. Swifties can expect to pay an average of $226.67 for one night. Prices are inflated around the concert; the cheapest night is August 10. For affordable food, head to the cheap and cheerful W!R Schachteln restaurant. The roast pork with crackling costs $13.73, while a serving of Oliver's chocolate cake with sour cherries is just over $5. With local pints averaging $4.89 each, you can have your beer and drink it, too! Save a night or two to enjoy an outdoor performance at Liechtenstein Garden Palace or a local park — you won't regret it. The Summer Rhapsody concerts conclude on August 18, so your timing is perfect.

Our methodology

These cities were chosen by looking at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour international dates with available tickets on StubHub as of April 11. Data was then collected in each city, including the average cost of an inexpensive meal, the average cost of a taxi fare for 5 miles, the average four-star hotel cost per night, the cheapest average concert ticket available, and the city's safety score. International currencies were converted to U.S. dollars using the conversion option available on the Numbeo website, where we collected a lot of our data. 

We then determined the total lowest average cost by calculating the price of the cheapest concert ticket, a two-night hotel stay, six inexpensive meals, one domestic beer, and two taxi rides. This amount does not include plane tickets and other travel expenses, clothing, or concert merch. Each city was given a total lowest average cost, which resulted in our final ranking of the cheapest destinations for Taylor Swift fans to catch the Eras Tour abroad in 2024. Dublin, Ireland, was excluded from the study as concert ticket prices were not available.

Victims of Nazi concentration camps built in British Channel Islands finally being counted

The names Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Buchenwald are infamous as the scene of atrocities -- concentration camps, run by Adolf Hitler's notorious SS.

But what you may be surprised to learn, as we were, is that two Nazi concentration camps were established on British soil in the Channel Islands, around 80 miles from the British mainland. The islands lie just off the coast of France, became possessions of the English crown around a thousand years ago – and were occupied by Germany for nearly five years during World War II. Even in the United Kingdom many people don't know about the camps -- and as we discovered, exactly what happened there is hotly disputed.

Holly Williams: It's pretty well hidden, isn't it?

Marcus Roberts: Yeah, well, if you--

Holly Williams: It's all overgrown.

Marcus Roberts: If you didn't know how to get here, you wouldn't easily stumble across it.

Marcus Roberts: This was a sort of back entrance…

There's not much left of the Third Reich's Lager Sylt concentration camp… on the windswept island of Alderney -- about three miles long and one and a half wide – nature is gradually swallowing up its crumbling concrete walls. 

Holly Williams: And the camp's up here…--

Marcus Roberts: These take you straight into the-- the camp.

Holly Williams: Wow.

Marcus Roberts is an Oxford-educated amateur historian who runs heritage tours. He's spent years researching this forgotten chapter in British history. 

Marcus Roberts:  So undoubtedly if you wanted to put-- a pin on the map, you could say, "This is where the Holocaust happened on British sovereign territory."

When Germany invaded France in 1940, the British government calculated that the Channel Islands had no strategic value – and gave them up without a fight. Nearly all of the residents of Alderney decided to evacuate before the German troops arrived. On the empty island, the Germans set up two concentration camps – as well as labor camps. They brought in prisoners of war and forced laborers to build giant fortifications that still survive today -- part of Hitler's Atlantic wall to protect against Allied attack. A minority of them were Jewish – others were from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Spain. 

Holly Williams: I understand this was called the Tunnel of Death?

Marcus Roberts: Yes. It was notorious in the memory of prisoners. On two occasions, they were forced to cram in here in an apparent rehearsal for their own death. 

After the war, in 1945, the British military investigated the camps, and put the death toll on Alderney in the low hundreds. Some of those who lost their lives were buried under this plot of land. But Marcus Roberts and others argue that more than 10,000 must have died on the island – based on controversial calculations about the size of the labor force needed to build the fortifications. Roberts told us it's because he's Jewish that he's determined to count all of the dead. 

Marcus Roberts: There is the-- the Jewish instinct to, you know, leave no one behind

Holly Williams: You're trying to make sure that all the Jewish dead are counted?

Marcus Roberts: Remembered. If you don't remember a life, it's as if they've never lived at all. 

Most academics dispute Roberts' estimate of the death toll, but partly as a result of those disagreements, last year the British government appointed a team of researchers to comb through archives across Europe, and more accurately count the number of prisoners who died on Alderney. Dr. Gilly Carr -- an archaeologist at Cambridge University -- is coordinating the review.

Holly Williams: Why is this just a document search, not a dig?

Gilly Carr: It is likely that some of the people in mass graves were Jewish. And according to Halakha or Jewish law, you cannot disturb the dead. But the second reason is that according to prisoner statements, some people were dumped at sea or thrown off cliffs. What are we going to do? Dig up the entire island? Well, we can't do that.

The researchers are drawing on rich material. The Nazis were meticulous record keepers -- and British archives contain first hand testimonies from survivors.

Holly Williams: Look at this. "We were beaten with everything they could lay their hands on: with sticks, spades, pickaxes." 

Gilly Carr: It sounds absolutely ghastly.

Holly Williams: "On certain days, five to six, up to 10 men died."

Dr. Carr told us there's no evidence that gas chambers were used on Alderney -- but there were summary executions, and the prisoners built the Nazi fortifications on starvation rations.

Holly Williams: Were they taken to Alderney to be worked to death?

Gilly Carr: They were certainly seen as expendable. The aim was to get every ounce of work out of them. And if they died, it didn't matter, and that was kind of perhaps "expected."

Holly Williams: They were disposable human beings.

Gilly Carr: Yes. Yes.

Holly Williams: How did your father end up in Alderney?

At a pub in the Channel Islands, we met Gary Font. His father – Francisco Font – fought on the losing side in the Spanish Civil War, was arrested in France, handed over to the Germans, and sent to a concentration camp on Alderney. Francisco survived, and later married a British woman -- Gary's mother.

Gary Font: He witnessed-- the execution of a young Soviet boy who decided to leave the working detail and to change his footwear. So he started to pick up these paper bags, and wrap them 'round his feet, and then tie them with string. And a SS guard had seen him do this, and walked up to him and-- and shot him-- point-blank range.

Gary told us his father's experiences left him scarred. 

Gary Font: I saw the emotion on his face. Yeah, it's a tough one.

Holly Williams: Do you think that emotion came from-- that he had survived the War in Spain, and survived the camp here?

Gary Font: Yeah, exactly. That was the first time I realized, "Wow, you know, this man has a deep-rooted emotion inside of him that he could never get out."

The British government's effort to get the truth out – by recounting the dead – was commissioned by Lord Pickles – a former cabinet minister and now the U.K.'s envoy for post-Holocaust issues.

Lord Pickles: The figures vary, not by a few hundred, not by a few thousand, by-- by tens of thousands. 

Holly Williams: So it was the controversy that prompted you to commission the review?

Lord Pickles: Yes. It seemed to me that the sensible thing was, "Well, okay. Let's do that-- this in the open. Let's do it fully transparent.

He's also asked the researchers to put names to as many of those killed as they can.

Lord Pickles: If you remember them as individuals, then it's another blow against Hitler. Hitler wanted to eradicate the memory of people.

Holly Williams: So this is kind of an ongoing fight against Hitler and his ideas?

Lord Pickles: Hitler's evil hand still continues to affect-- to affect Europe and to affect the world.

But it's taken nearly 80 years for the British government to re-examine what happened on Alderney -- and to make its report public. The official British investigations in 1945 were classified for decades. And unlike the trials of Nazi officials in Nuremberg -- the British authorities failed to prosecute a single German officer who worked on Alderney – even though many of them ended up in British prisoner of war camps.

Holly Williams: I mean just to be clear, these are possible war criminals. The British government has gathered evidence against-- against them. And they are in British custody.

Gilly Carr: Yes, they are at this point, yes.

Holly Williams: A sort of slam-dunk case?

Gilly Carr: You'd have thought. 

That's led Marcus Roberts and others to claim that the British government tried to cover-up the extent of the atrocities on Alderney. Dr. Carr told us that could be true -- but one key document from the British War Office investigation that may explain why there were no prosecutions is missing.

Gilly Carr: It could have been shredded-- decades ago as part of, "What do we need these files for anymore?

Holly Williams: But could it also have been shredded for more nefarious purposes?

Gilly Carr: I have no idea. In order for me to say there was a cover-up, I want to see the decisions taken. I want to look through those steps and to make up my own mind.

Holly Williams: Why might the British government have tried to cover up or whitewash what happened on Alderney and-- and maybe more broadly, on the Channel Islands?

Gilly Carr: There are some things that-- that happened that might not-- that the British government might not necessarily have wanted a wider audience to know about. 

Those things – once feared too troubling for the broader public – happened on three of the other Channel Islands -- where most residents did not evacuate before the occupation. When the Germans arrived, the locals mostly cooperated – often with little choice. Hitler's portrait was hung outside this cinema on the island of Guernsey. Nazi propaganda showed the British police working for German troops. And British newspapers on the islands printed orders from Berlin.

Holly Williams: This is a British newspaper. And it's got the swastika on top.

Linda Romeril: That's right.

At the official archives on the island of Jersey, Linda Romeril showed us how British officials implemented Nazi policies -- asking Jewish residents to identify themselves, and then confiscating their assets.

Linda Romeril: There was a huge amount of requisitioning of people's houses, people's property during the occupation period.

But some resisted -- risking punishment to paint anti-nazi graffiti, and illegally listening to British news on the radio.

Jenny Lecoat: That's my great aunt Louisa. I suspect that she was probably quite steely.

One member of the resistance was Louisa Gould -- who hid an escaped Russian prisoner in her home for nearly two years. Jenny Lecoat told us when her great aunt Louisa was finally caught, she was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany.

Holly Williams: She was killed in a Nazi gas chamber?

Jenny Lecoat: She was gassed to death, yeah.

Holly Williams: After the occupation, did the British government get in touch with your family to talk about what Louisa had done during the occupation, and about her murder by the Nazis?

Jenny Lecoat: The British government, I think, were kind of ashamed. They were horrified it had happened, and they didn't really want to get too involved in what had gone on there.

Holly Williams: Not wanting to talk about the resistance? Or not wanting to talk about the occupation at all?

Jenny Lecoat: Well, it was such a mixed picture. There were people who had resisted the Germans as much as resistance was possible within a tiny, nine-by-five-mile island. And there were also people who'd collaborated. Some people had betrayed their own country. The only possible legislation was treason, which was still a hanging offense. They didn't wanna get into that. That was the confusing, messy, dirty mixed picture of-- of the Channel Islands occupation.

We'll learn more about that messy, dirty history when the British government's review of the death toll at the camps on Alderney is published next month. But it's unlikely to satisfy everyone.

Marcus Roberts: Some kind of-- ap-- apology and, you know, moral recompense would be helpful.

Holly Williams: You-- you want the British government to apologize--

Marcus Roberts: Yeah. I'd like--

Holly Williams: --for not having prosecuted alleged war criminals?

Marcus Roberts: Yeah. So I think it would be appropriate for them to recognize what should have been done, didn't happen.

The horrors carried out on this tiny, remote island are difficult to imagine... the victims were silenced and buried… but now, nearly eight decades later, they're finally being counted.
