Comparison review: Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari

With how popular the Hyundai Alcazar , and before it, the Tata Safari have been right from the get-go, this three-row midsize SUV segment of the Indian car market is quickly becoming the newest frontier for carmakers to draw in the numbers. And having sampled both these SUVs, it's surprising we're only just seeing this trend pick up. We can't think of any significant downside to the immense flexibility that an extra row of seats provides, in a footprint not significantly larger than these SUVs' two-row counterparts. But we still need to see which one of these pulls off this package the best.

tata safari vs alcazar

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Styling

Both, the Hyundai Alcazar and the Tata Safari stay true to the five-seater SUVs they've been derived from. So the Alcazar inherits the more compact, city-slicker stance of the Creta. The Safari, conversely, is immediately noticeable as being taller, wider and longer which translates into better proportions and quite an imposing presence. If the sheer mass of car your money buys is what's most important to you, the Safari is your bet.

But that's not to say that the Hyundai won't grab eyeballs. The full-sized grille's chrome inserts attract just the right amount of attention, nicely offset by the new detailing in the split headlamps and the bumpers. The Safari uses similar visual trickery to separate from the Harrier, with more chrome and a different honeycomb grille but isn't quite as effective at separating itself from the Harrier as the Alcazar is from the Creta.

tata safari vs alcazar

The two only truly differentiate themselves when seen in profile, with their extended rear sections. Hyundai has gone further and lengthened the Creta's wheelbase by 150mm for the Alcazar to accommodate the extra row of seats but it must be said that the Safari looks no less proportionate with just the extended rear overhang(63mm) it carries. The cladding around the rear quarter-glass and the stepped roof effect(ornamental in this sunroof-equipped version) seems to help. We like the Alcazar's flatter roof and the darkened C-pillar but the Safari's softer lines seem to gel better as a design. Both sit on 18-inch wheels which works just fine on the Alcazar but with its sheer size, we think 19s would have struck the right balance for the Safari.

tata safari vs alcazar

There are new rear sections to both SUVs to accommodate the extensions. The Alcazar's is the more noticeable departure with the large two-part LED lighting and the wide chrome band between them. These clusters seem a touch larger with the narrower Hyundai which again seems to make the Safari look the better executed with its similarly upright but better-contoured rear section.

tata safari vs alcazar

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Interiors, space and features

On the inside, the general layout and themes have been carried over for both, but the focus is firmly on the rear seats as well as on offering a richer experience on the move. In the Hyundai Alcazar, this comes across in the tan and dark grey theme to the cabin. The layout of the dashboard is otherwise the same as in the Creta, with the distinct flowing centre console angled to the driver and the in-dash 10.25-inch touchscreen. This makes a great first impression but we would have liked to have seen a few more soft surfaces, especially around the dash-top and other frequent touchpoints.

tata safari vs alcazar

The Tata Safari makes a similarly appealing first impression, by offering a good mix of materials and textures in the cabin and by having more of the touchpoints, including the dash top, finished in softer materials. The Hyundai still holds a slight edge in the way everything seems to be put together but the Safari seems to offer a more thoughtful mix of materials, even if the white and grey theme might take some maintenance.

tata safari vs alcazar

But as with most new Hyundais, the Alcazar's trump card is the massive list of features and conveniences it offers. The new 10.25-inch instrument cluster is one of the highlights with its crisp layouts and the very useful lane change function that comes with the also new 360-degree camera. There's multi-colour ambient lighting, wireless charging and ventilated seats, all of which the Safari misses out on. In fact, the Hyundai's connectivity package is significantly more advanced than the Tata's with a touchscreen that is much more fluid in its operation, far more seamless Android Auto/Apple Carplay integration and a much wider suite of connected tech and voice controls.

tata safari vs alcazar

This continues to the second row where there are sunshades in the windows, another wireless charger and the foldable tray tables. But even with this, the Safari is the clear choice if comfort in this row is your absolute priority. In the captain's chairs here, the Tata offers larger, more supportive seats with just the right amount of cushioning and underthing support. There is a much greater sense of space here, with the raised seating and the wider range of legroom adjustment that the second row offers in the Safari. Both come with a reclining function and a panoramic sunroof, but the lighter colours exaggerate the Safari's larger dimensions to create a sense of space that the Alcazar lacks. The second-row seats in the Alcazar are reasonably supportive in isolation and legroom is much improved from the Creta, the soft headrest cushions adding a special touch too.

tata safari vs alcazar

A significant benefit of the Alcazar's second-row seats are that they tumble and fold to offer easier access to the third-row, there's even a thoughtful indent along the door sill to serve as a handle. This is quite unlike the Safari where, in these captain seat versions, the only way in is through the wide but still awkward gap between the two seats. But once inside, the Safari is the best bet for longer journeys. There's more legroom even with the second row pushed back fully, enough for adults to spend some amount of time in. As is expected there's not much thigh support or a very supportive seat back in either, the Alcazar's third row is best used by children. Both offer a separate AC unit as well as USB ports and cupholders in this space. The Alcazar claws back ground with its more practical storage spaces, there is more boot space with all rows up and with the folding second row, there's a flatter, easier to access load bay. The second-row armrest could have had a folding mechanism to fully utilize this space, but still, there is much more luggage space with the Safari's second-row not offering any flexibility in this regard.

tata safari vs alcazar

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Driving impressions

In the diesel versions we have here, the Alcazar can also be had with a new petrol engine, the Tata Safari holds a distinct advantage on paper. And there are few surprises with how that translates to the real world. The 170PS and 350 Nm from the Stellantis-sourced 2.0-litre Multijet diesel in the Safari is enough to offset the significant weight advantage that the Alcazar has, largely due to the 115PS and 250 Nm it makes from the 1.5-litre diesel it's fitted with.

tata safari vs alcazar

But having said that, the Hyundai-developed six-speed torque converter shared between both SUVs here is expectedly better attuned to the Alcazar's motor. This makes the Alcazar a smoother companion on the daily grind, where the gearbox does very well to extract the best out of the engine's relatively modest outputs. There is a linearity to the power delivery that makes tackling start-stop traffic just that bit easier.

The Safari is better at keeping up with traffic as our numbers suggest thanks to its higher outputs, although the gearbox can't eradicate the larger engine's lag quite as well which makes the experience feel a touch more hesitant, an effect compounded by the drivetrain's tendency to coast off-throttle. But the Safari offers a much better view out, you're sitting higher than most others and the edges of the bonnet are easily visible. The lighter steering also works well to hide the Tata's girth.

tata safari vs alcazar

Besides, the Land Rover derived underpinnings lend the Tata a sense of indestructibility over heavily battered roads that's quite reassuring after having spent some time in the Alcazar. Unlike in the Hyundai, very few jolts are passed into the cabin and even though you can hear the suspension hard at work, things remain fairly serene inside. Both SUVs here have been given different suspension tuning over their two-row counterparts, with Hyundai having gone further and strengthened the chassis in the Alcazar with more high-strength steel. This has worked, the Alcazar is one of the more comfortable Hyundais we've driven, especially at steady urban speeds, where the SUV dials out minor road imperfections commendably.

tata safari vs alcazar

The Safari is somewhat caught out in these very specific situations where the suspension seems to be unable to fully dampen small, repeated vibrations. But once at highway speeds, the Safari is our clear favourite. It feels much more comfortable at building speeds and holding momentum with a solidity that's quite reassuring. Surprisingly, it also feels more confident around bends. There's more body roll than in the Alcazar but this is more progressive and the squarer dimensions make it feel more cohesive around turns.

tata safari vs alcazar

The Alcazar is hampered by its lower outputs, which makes maintaining speeds and passing slower traffic a tad bit less straightforward, a trait that will likely be exacerbated by a full load of passengers. The Hyundai's steering offers more precise control here, the counterintuitive setup in the Safari is laborious at parking speeds but doesn't quite weigh up in traffic. But this doesn't fully cancel out the Alcazar's slightly twitchy demeanour at triple digits speeds where the suspension can't quite iron out undulations or broken patches completely. As for slowing down from speed, both cars could do with a bit more initial feel and bite from the brake pedal, but pushing through this reveals a useful amount of braking performance. The lighter Alcazar fairing a bit better.

Both offer drive and traction modes and we found choosing between comfort and sport is all you really need to worry about. The Safari offers its full outputs in this mode and is a more alert drive in this situation, although this should widen its efficiency disadvantage to the Alcazar further.

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Safety

Neither of these SUVs have been tested for Global NCAP ratings. But both offer six airbags in these top trims with the Safari also adding a hill-descent control function. The Alcazar gets TPMS and the very useful 360-degree cameras that incorporate the lane change camera right in the instrument cluster. Conversely, the lone rearview camera in the Safari is not very crisp.

tata safari vs alcazar

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Verdict and prices

Priced at Rs 24.35 lakh for the top-spec diesel here, the Hyundai Alcazar is a significant Rs 2 lakh less than the equivalent Safari at Rs 26.35 lakh. That's quite a deal given the immense features the Hyundai packs, the better luggage space and more manageable dimensions. In fact, if you planning on using your three-row SUV primarily as a daily driver with the occasional family outing, this might be the better choice. But our pick would be the Tata Safari. It seems to fully maximize comfort for all passengers, especially in the second and third rows, and its dynamic ability seems to cover all situations that you might put it through. The Tata is more comfortable more of the time and there's no denying the massive presence that comes with the package.

Hyundai Alcazar VS Tata Safari: Comparison

Alcazar vs Safari

As Hyundai launched its first 7-Seater SUV, Alcazar, it has stepped in the competition of 7-seater SUVs. One of the strongest rivals of Alcazar is Tata Safari which debuted in 1998 and has been holding a prestigious position in India ever since. Maintaining its streak Tata has brought in an all-new version of Safari a few months back only. Safari’s legacy of years and Hyundai’s first venture in the 7-Seater segment, a comparison between the two seems quite intriguing.

Hyundai Alcazar

Tata Safari

The size of an SUV is one of its USPs. Since both SUVs can accommodate 7 passengers, it’ll be interesting to know how spacious these SUVs are on the outside as well as the inside.

Wheelbase and width are similarly significant for the usable space of any car. Alcazar is longer and Safari is wider, thereby both of their cabins seem more or less similarly spacious. While Alcazar offers a bigger boot space, it lags behind Safari substantially on the grounds of comfort and convenience of the 3 rd row. Moreover, the 73L boot space of Safari can be expanded further via tumbling 3 rd row. Along with an amply spacious 3 rd row, the 2 nd row in Safari takes it far ahead of Alcazar as it is set a bit higher than the 1 st row, which impressively enhances the visibility of 2 nd -row passengers to the world outside the car.

Engine and performance

With the availability of a petrol engine, the Hyundai Alcazar has a definite advantage over the Tata Safari. Hyundai has equipped the Alcazar with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces 156.9 bhp of power and 191 Nm of peak torque, and is paired with 6 speed manual and automatic ( torque converter ) transmission.

The comparison between the Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar can be made for the diesel engines that both manufacturers have equipped their SUVs with.

Diesel Engine

If you prefer power to mileage, you will certainly find Safari more appealing than Alcazar. However, most people’ priority is mileage, and Alcazar is definitely leading in this department. For a 7-Seater SUV, Alcazar’s 20.4 kmpl mileage is quite commendable as compared to seemingly moderate mileage figures of 16.14 kmpl of Safari. The difference of both cars’ mileage may seem a small figure in the table but most people are very much aware of the massive difference it makes in the long run.

Features are the ones that define the comfort and convenience of a car, let’s see how much luxury Hyundai and Tata are offering through these cars.

In this aspect, Alcazar seems to be on the winning side. Alcazar offers a 10.25 inch fully digital instrument cluster and front parking sensors, whereas Safari is missing the front parking sensor, and offers 7.0-inch MID instrument cluster with analogue speedometer. Some of the more Alcazar advantages over Safari are paddle shifters, 360-degree camera, Blind view monitor, and Air-purifier with AQI display.

Nevertheless, Safari does facilitate you with an amply better off-road ride experience, more comfortable seats, and a unique feature which Tata calls ‘Boss mode’. In this feature the passenger behind the co-driver can recline the back-rest, slide the co-driver seat and his own seat to free more room, without disturbing the co-driver. So, if you are looking for more features, then Alcazar should be the choice, however, if you prefer comfort and off-roading quality then Safari is your car.

Every Brand tries to load the cars with the best safety features, and better safety is something that one primarily expects from an SUV. Let’s see how safe rides both of these cars offer.

On the safety side, both cars sport the most imperative safety features. As Alcazar takes the lead due to Brake assist, Safari provides you with Hill Descent control that Alcazar doesn’t. However, both the cars are offering a relieving safety of up to 6 airbags which will include Driver’s, Co-driver’s, Side, and Curtain. Apparently, Tata and Hyundai, both have ensured the best possible safety in their cars.

Here is the most vital comparison, as the pricing of a car can change the choices in a jiff. The prices of both the 6- & 7- Seater SUVs are as follows.

Also Read – Maruti Fronx vs Maruti Brezza

The base model of Safari is less costly than Alcazar, but as we go up the variants, prices seem to favour Alcazar. In totality, Alcazar is a bit lower-priced than Safari, while offering quite similar features and performance.

There is no specific winner among these two SUVs. Safari is certainly more riveting to those who want more power, torque, and a usable 3rd row. Moreover, Tata Safari has a legacy name value and reliability. However, Hyundai Alcazar should be your choice if you are looking for a 7-seater SUV with remarkable fuel economy.

Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari: Detailed Comparison

tata safari vs alcazar

By Harsh Rana

tata safari vs alcazar

Regular family outings do require an SUV that can seat as many people as it can. Keeping that in mind, multiple carmakers tried introducing a fully packed SUV that is under a tight budget and is practical in nature. Planning to buy a 6 or a 7-seater SUV? Here is a detailed comparison between Hyundai Alcazar and Tata Safari to figure out which one suits you better.

Hyundai Alcazar

Hyundai-Alcazar

Undoubtedly, it is a 7-seater Creta but just to make sure that it is even practical, Hyundai has worked on its wheelbase for more space on offer. According to the brand, the new Alcazar features several first-in-segment features to set it apart from its well-established rivals.

Under the hood, the all-new SUV uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, petrol engine that churns out a massive 159PS of power and 191Nm of peak torque. Coming to the diesel motor, it’s a 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit good for 115PS of power and 250Nm of torque.

Transmission duties for both of them are handled by either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.

Just like the Creta, this one is the most feature-rich SUV in its segment. To name a few, Alcazar comes with distinctive features such as a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, 8-speaker Bose surround sound system, air purifier, retractable tables for the second row, side footsteps and rear window sunshade to name a few.

Pros & Cons

It is still not tested in terms of safety. Also, the third row of the Alcazar is not at all the best in the segment keeping in mind the ample amount of wheelbase it has got to offer. Coming to the pros, it is feature loaded with several of them available as standard. Surprisingly, the boot carrying capacity is decent even after retaining the third row.

Tata Safari

2021 Tata Safari Revealed

With a solid build quality, Tata Motors came up with the new Safari as their flagship offering. The expectation from the name was so high that initially, there were a lot of mixed reactions from the enthusiasts across the country. It’s back even stronger with a localised platform known as OMEGARC which is again a derivation of Land Rover’s D8 platform.

It comes powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that propels a colossal 170PS of power and 350Nm of peak torque. For transmission duties, Tata Motors has offered 6-speed automatic and manual gearboxes as per the customer’s requirement.

The interior of the Tata Safari remains very similar to its younger sibling. Just like the Harrier, it will sport a semi-digital instrument cluster, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 9-speaker JBL surround sound system, terrain response modes, etc. All of them together makes it a sensible SUV in terms of features.

Priced similarly to the Alcazar, it still misses out on some modern features. Talking about what’s good, the 7-seater layout gets full marks in terms of practicality. Also, the ride quality of the new Safari is best in its segment.

Hyundai Alcazar vs rivals: Price, specifications comparison

Hyundai has finally launched the Alcazar SUV, with prices starting at Rs 16.30 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Based on the Creta, the Alcazar is available in three trim levels, with a six- or seven- seater layout and two engine options.

The Alcazar enters the three-row seat SUV segment, which will see it compete against the likes of the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500. Read on to see how Hyundai’s newest SUV compares with its rivals.

Hyundai Alcazar has the longest wheelbase

Alcazar and MG Hector Plus also get a petrol engine option

Hyundai Alcazar prices range from Rs 16.30-20.00 lakh

Hyundai Alcazar vs rivals: Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, all SUVs here measure around 4.5 metres. However, it’s the MG (4,720mm) that is the longest, while the Hyundai (4,500mm) is the shortest in this comparison. The Tata Safari is the widest (1,894mm) and the tallest (1,786mm) of the lot, narrowly beating out the Mahindra XUV500 in both aspects, which is 1,890mm wide and 1,785mm tall. The new Hyundai Alcazar, however, boasts of the largest wheelbase (2,760mm) here, which is 10mm larger than its nearest competitor in this aspect, the MG Hector Plus. Finally, all SUVs here in their top-spec forms come with 18-inch alloy wheels.

Hyundai Alcazar vs rivals: Diesel engines

All competitors make use of four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motors. But, it’s the Mahindra that has the largest displacement engine, at 2.2-litres. The XUV500’s diesel engine also produces the most torque, at 350Nm. Meanwhile, both, the Tata and the MG, use a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre unit. While it may be down on torque compared to the Mahindra’s engine, the Safari and the Hector Plus have the most powerful engine here, producing 170hp.

The Hyundai Alcazar has the smallest diesel engine in this comparison and that is reflected in its output. The power (115hp) and torque (250Nm) are significantly down when compared to the others.

In terms of gearboxes, all SUVs here come with a 6-speed manual unit. They all also feature the option of a 6-speed torque converter automatic, barring the MG Hector Plus. It’s also worth noting that all these SUVs are front-wheel drive only. The XUV500 used to be offered with an all-wheel drive option earlier, but that was discontinued in its transition to BS6.

Hyundai Alcazar vs rivals: Petrol engines

In this comparison, it’s only the Alcazar and Hector Plus that come with petrol engine options. The Alcazar’s 2.0-litre petrol engine is of larger displacement and is naturally aspirated whereas the Hector Plus’ smaller 1.5-litre engine uses forced induction. The Hyundai’s petrol unit is more powerful than the MG’s, putting out 159hp compared to 143hp, while the MG’s engine is torquier, producing 250Nm in comparison to the Hyundai’s 191Nm.

The MG also one ups the Hyundai by offering a 48V mild-hybrid system, however, this can only be had with the 6-speed manual gearbox. The MG Hector Plus petrol is also available with dual-clutch automatic and CVT automatic transmissions. The Hyundai Alcazar, meanwhile, can be had with either a 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic gearbox.

Hyundai Alcazar vs rivals: Price

Hyundai has priced the Alcazar between Rs 16.30 to 19.85 lakh for the petrol versions and Rs 16.53 to 20.00 lakh for the diesels. This comes across as being reasonably competitive when compared to rivals. Sure, the difference at entry-level between the Alcazar and Hector Plus petrol is a massive Rs 2.67 lakh but, at the top-end, this difference shrinks down to Rs 67,000. In terms of the diesels, the Alcazar again has the highest starting price but, it is not the most expensive SUV here in its top-spec diesel form. The top-spec Alcazar diesel is Rs 1.81 lakh cheaper than the top-spec Safari and only Rs 4,000 and Rs 39,000 more expensive than the Hector Plus’ and XUV500’s top-spec variants, respectively. To add to that, the Alcazar is packed with features such as a panoramic sunroof, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging in the second-row and leatherette upholstery and is also backed by Hyundai’s expansive aftersales network throughout the country. However, it’s worth noting that prices for the Alcazar are introductory for the time being and will be hiked in due course.

So, that’s how the new Hyundai Alcazar stacks up against the competition on paper. But, how it does compare to the rivals on the road? That’s something we can only answer after doing an in-depth, comparison review of the lot in the real-world.

Hyundai Alcazar VS Tata Safari: Six By Six

Three-row suvs with seating for six are a new niche. here are the best examples.

tata safari vs alcazar

Mercedes Benz A200d — Sedan Chic

Six-seat monocoque SUVs seem to be gaining popularity. While some would attribute Maruti Suzuki with pioneering the space with its Ertiga-based XL6 in August 2019, MG Motor’s Hector Plus, which launched in July 2020, renewed interest in the segment. In the span of a year, Tata and Hyundai have thrown their respective hats in the ring — with the Safari and the Alcazar — and Mahindra’s upcoming XUV700 will join them later this year.

These SUVs are aimed at the more compact family units; those who are living without an extended family, are looking to start one and have the option of being chauffeur-driven. To that end, there’s an extra amount of effort made to make the second row as comfortable as the first. I’m on a mission to find out how true that is, with the two newest entrants, the Hyundai Alcazar and the Tata Safari.

At the outset, let me say I prefer the driver’s seat to any of the passenger ones and it’s difficult to convince me otherwise (the Maybach GLS got close though). Both these SUV’s driver’s seats are well-bolstered, comfortable and six-way power adjustable, though the Alcazar’s come with ventilation, which is an absolute boon on hot days. You sit higher up in the Safari though the rather thick A-pillars and long bonnet hamper overall visibility and it takes a while to compensate for just how big the SUV is in tight spaces. On the other hand, the smaller Alcazar is much easier to manoeuvre in the city with the 360-degree camera and blind spot monitors helping out tremendously. Overall, the Hyundai’s driver’s seat is a nicer place to be in compared to the Safari, and the experience is enhanced by the easy-to-view digital instrument cluster; it’s a bit easier to read in bright sunlight and far cheerier than the Tata’s part-digital unit. I’m not a fan of Alcazar’s flat-bottom steering though.

Interestingly, both have a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels, though the diesel engines they are mated to are quite different. The Alcazar’s 113-bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged engine is punchy enough and delivers power quite linearly, but you can tell there’s a diesel unit under the bonnet. It’s no surprise the Safari’s 168-bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine (borrowed from Jeep) feels stronger. It’s got a 10.19 kgm advantage too, and it shows — if you’re going to accelerate hard in city and sport modes, keep the steering dead straight as a slight tilt can make the car pull hard in that direction. Driving the Safari in an enthusiastic manner feels like it’s a barely restrained beast with the tyres and electronics managing to just rein it in. In my book, that makes it a bit lairy and fun, but it’s not for everyone.

The Alcazar feels considerably more manageable when pushed, making it not as exciting, but it’s all-wheel disc brake set-up also sheds speed more confidently than the portly Safari’s four discs. Neither SUV is a corner carver, but it is the Alcazar that strikes a better balance between ride and handling, albeit by a small margin. While nothing seems to phase the Safari’s Land Rover-derived monocoque chassis and bump absorption is excellent, there’s too much roll, pitch and yaw and the hydraulic steering weighs up inconsistently too. Although both cars also get terrain modes that do alter the drive slightly, neither is meant to really go off-road. The Safari could take on a light trail route but it’s a far cry from the previous Safari’s capabilities; remember, it had a ladder-frame chassis and a 4×4 system too.

BMW Motorrad goes clutchless, unveils Automated Shift Assistant

Coming to what makes these six-seat SUVs unique, the second rows get four-way adjustable captains chairs instead of a bench and in both cases, those with rounder rumps may feel a bit cramped. Still there’s ample breathing room in both cars that’s accentuated by the panoramic sunroofs though the Alcazar surprises with its roominess, which is, in part, thanks to the 19 mm in the wheelbase it has over the Safari. It seems like Hyundai has tried harder to enhance the second row experience by adding tray tables to the front seat backs and wireless charging and it works. Tata isn’t too far behind though as in the Safari, the left side second row passenger can adjust the front passenger seat to their liking with the aptly named ‘Boss mode’ function.

Access to the third row in the Safari is between the second row seats. While the captain seats do fold away, the function is only to liberate cargo space and not for access. The Hyundai’s one-touch foldaway function makes it easy to access the third row. However, full-size adults will definitely be more comfortable in the Tata than in the Hyundai, when it comes to third row space, although the AC blower controls and USB ports are both only on the left side. Still, over long distances, the third row is best for children. Naturally, boot space is at a premium in both SUVs with all the seats up and it is advisable to fold the third row in to make room.

Another aspect these SUVs share is that they both have a five-seat sibling that looks similar from the front, which may hamper their appeal to some. It is from the sides and the rear that the Safari and Alcazar stand out when compared to the Harrier and Creta, respectively. There’s no doubt the Safari looks the part of an SUV — it’s big, rugged and stands fairly high above the ground. The Alcazar shares its polarising front-end design with the Creta, but with subtle changes, However, the rear of the bigger Hyundai is definitely more eye-catching than its five-seat sibling and that really helps the Alcazar’s case. While looks are subjective, between the two, the Safari looks the part of a big SUV.

On most metrics, it is the Alcazar that nudges ahead of the Tata Safari, and its price tag is another area where the Hyundai SUV manages the same. This range-topping Alcazar Signature (O) variant with the dual-tone paint scheme costs Rs 20.15 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, and comes with far more equipment than the near-top-spec Safari XZA+ we drove, which is priced at Rs 21.64 lakh. So, if you’re looking for a six-seat SUV that is good to drive and be driven in, the Hyundai Alcazar is your best bet.

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Dimensions, specs, and features compared

Times Drive Desk

Hyundai Alcazar will be the latest entrant in the seven-seater SUV segment in India. Set to be launched this month, can the Alcazar give a tough competition to the likes of Tata Safari? Let's try to gauge that.

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Dimensions, specs, and features compared

The seven-seater segment in India is growing with the arrival of new products. In last year, cars like MG Hector Plus and Tata Safari have revived the popularity of three-row SUVs (not that cars like XUV500 and Toyota Innova were any less in demand). The segment is now poised to grow with the arrival of another contender -- Hyundai Alcazar. Showcased a few days ago, the Alcazar is Creta's seven-seater sibling and will be launched this month. But unlike Hector Plus and Safari, which are three-row versions of their five-seater siblings, the Alcazar is reasonably different from the Creta, not only in terms of design but mechanically as well. But can this new seven-seater SUV give rivals like Tata Safari a run for their money? Let's try to compare things using the existing information available about Alcazar.

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Space

Alcazar banner side.jpg

Hyundai  Alcazar's  is 4,500 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall, and has a 2,760 mm-long wheelbase. Tata Safari, on the other hand, is 4,661 mm long, 1,894 mm wide, 1,786 mm tall, and has a 2,741 mm-long wheelbase. The Alcazar also offers a reasonable boot space of 180-litres with all three rows up as compared to a meagre 73-litres of boot space on Tata Safari.

These figures reveal that Tata Safari is longer, wider, and taller than Hyundai Alcazar. However, it is the South Korean three-row SUV that offers more boot space and a longer wheelbase.

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Features

Alcazar int sketch.jpg

Hyundai hasn't revealed if the Alcazar will get any additional feature as compared to the Creta, except for the dedicated AC vents for the third-row passengers. So, it is safe to assume that Alcazar will borrow features from Creta and will have provisions like a 10.25-inch infotainment system with BlueLink connectivity, BOSE sound system, wireless smartphone charger, eight-way powered driver seat, front ventilated seats, low line tyre pressure monitoring system, blue ambient lighting, Auto Healthy air purifier, multiple driving and traction modes, and a panoramic sunroof. Of course, the third-row seats get dedicated AC vents but with speed control.

New Tata Safari interior

Tata Safari, on the other hand, gets provisions like an 8.8-inch touchscreen with iRA connectivity suite with a voice assistant for connected car technology, a seven-inch TFT display for the instrument panel, automatic AC, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, powered driver seat, push-button start/stop, ambient lighting, cruise control, Majestic Skydome (Tata speak for panoramic sunroof), sliding function for second-row seats (captain seats), multiple driving modes, etc.

This tells us that Alcazar is likely to be more feature-rich as compared to Tata Safari because of provisions like ventilated front seats, a bigger touchscreen, and BlueLink connectivity suite.

Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari: Specs

The Alcazar is available with a choice between a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel powerplant. The petrol unit is the third generation Nu 2.0 unit that puts out best-in-segment 157 bhp and 191 Nm of peak torque. The 1.5-litre diesel engine, on the other hand, develops 113 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, which is the same as in Creta diesel. Both the powerplants are available with a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Alcazar camo rear.png

The new Tata Safari is propelled by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that puts out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. This engine is offered with a choice between a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes.

These figures reveal that Tata Safari's diesel engine is more powerful than Alcazar's petrol and diesel engine. However, the lack of a petrol powerplant may push some customers towards Hyundai Alcazar.
