Sipping prosecco and having cicchetti, while watching gondolas pass by leisurely in Venice was one of the best activities I could do on my 12 day Italy itinerary – and I didn’t even have it on my list!

Italy is one of those places that you wish to return to as soon as you’ve left.

There’s so much to see in Italy. These 12 days itinerary Italy are for you if you have 12-15 days in Italy. 12-15 days isn’t much considering travel between one city to another. How do you choose which places to see?

To plan the best 12 day Italy itinerary or the best 14 day itinerary Italy for yourself, I’d advise sticking to one to three regions at the most and picking the cities that offer the experiences you’d like.

Pick favourites like Rome, Venice and pair them with a few island experiences. Or the Dolomites, if you would like to be in the mountains. Places like Trentino are stunning yet not as touristy – worth a visit too!

12 Days Italy Itinerary – General info

The best 12 day itinerary Italy for you would be picking what you want to see and planning to travel in the easiest way possible, spending less time on travel and having more time for sightseeing.

For instance, if you want to get from Amalfi Coast to Sardinia, a ferry can take you there, but it would need 15 hours or more. In such cases, fly to the destination. Or many cities in Italy are well connected by high-speed and regional trains, so consider taking the train.

You can also do offbeat destinations through your 12 day tour of Italy or consider extending it to 14-15 days.

These Italy itinerary 12 days have been planned, assuming you’d have the entire 12 days in Italy, but they can be used as Italy itinerary 14 days if you have more time.

For cities that are far away, you’ll spend half of the day travelling from one city to another. You can use the evening for sightseeing. But if you don’t want to, the following 12 days in Italy itinerary are planned, keeping that into that account, and you’d still have enough for sightseeing.

The best Italy itinerary 12 days would include seeing a few cities in three regions at the most. For a 12 day itinerary Italy, I think four-six cities in three regions would give you enough time to see the highlights of each city and relax and unwind at Italy ‘s mountains or beaches.

The other three Italy itinerary 12 days combine cities like Rome, Venice, Florence etc., with either Sardinia, Sicily, or Amalfi Coast.

12 day itinerary Italy

Day 3 – Venice to Cortina d’Ampezzo/San Martino di Castrozza

Go to Cortina d’Ampezzo to see the most celebrated peaks of the Dolomite range in the Veneto region or if you’d like to see the Pale di San Martino range in Trento Aldige, you should go to San Martino di Castrozza.

Venice to Cortina d’Ampezzo

The best way is to drive, share a ride or take a bus from Venice to Cortina d’Ampezzo. During winter, Cortina is linked to northern Italian cities like Venice, Bologna and their airports through a direct bus from the city to Cortina.

Or you can take a train from the Venice Mestre station to the Calalzo di Cadore station , which is about 35 km away from Cortina d’Ampezzo. Expect traffic on weekends. Roads are bustling on Friday/Saturday mornings from Venice to Cortina and on Sundays from Cortina to Venice.

Venice to San Martino di Castrozza

Venice is about 180 km from San Martino di Castrozza. You can take a transfer from Venice airport or take the Brusutti bus from Venice to San Martino di Castrozza. For travelling by train, you have to take the train to Feltre station and arrange for transport from Feltre to San Martino di Castrozza. Taking a direct bus to San Martino, a direct transfer, or driving is more convenient.

Day 4 and 5 – Cortina d’Ampezzo/San Martino di Castrozza

Hiking – If you’re here in summer, there are nearly 20 options to choose from for hiking. The Croda Da Lago Circuit is a popular but moderately difficult hike. You can do easier hikes if you’d like, from the nature park to the Fanes waterfall or from the town centre to Mortisa and the Volpera caves.

Hike to the Lago di Sorapis , a lake famous for its unique turquoise water. This hike can be challenging, but many travellers do it for the lake’s calming, beautiful view. The hike takes about 5 hours up and down the mountain.

See the Cinque Torri and Tofana mountain ranges – They’re about 7 km away from each other.

See the Mario Rimoldi Modern Art Museum

If you are here in winter, you can ski here. Cortina is famous for its groomed pistes suitable for all levels. You can ski in the Tofana (great for beginners), Faloria and Cinque Torri areas.

San Martino di Castrozza

In San Martino di Castrozza, you can do explore these places –

See the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park . This park has the Pale di San Martino mountain group, the largest mountain group of the Dolomites. You can hike or discover trails within the park and even stay in the park at one of the lodges. Visit the picturesque Val Venegia (valley) and see the ‘Matterhorn of the Dolomites’, the Cimon Della Pala that overlooks the valley.

This is the second-highest summit of the Pala group. Hiking from San Martino would be very challenging, and driving is better unless you can do the challenging hike.

You can also go to the Rosetta Peak for a panoramic view of the Pale peaks, San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero valley and the Lagorai mountain range.

See Val Canali. You can get to the Rifugio Treviso (a mountain hut used as a base) by car for a great view of the Val Canali or park your car at the car park below Malga Canali for an easy 1-hour walk to the Rifugio Treviso.

There are separate areas in San Martino di Castrozza for skiing. 60 km of the place has marked slopes for skiing surrounded by the beautiful Dolomites.

Day 6 – Cortina d’Ampezzo/San Martino di Castrozza to Milan

Cortina d’Ampezzo is 410 km away from Milan.

You can drive or take a bus from Cortina to Milan. Flixbus’ 6.30 am bus takes the shortest time of 6 hours 20 minutes.

To travel by train, you’ll have to change trains twice, once at Ponte Nelle Alpi Polpet and then at Venice to reach Milan. For the train, one needs to get to the Calalzo – Pieve Cadore – Cortina station, which is 35 km away from Cortina d’Ampezzo.

San Martino di Castrozza to Milan

San Martino di Castrozza is 330 km away from Milan.

Booking a direct transfer or driving is easier. If you’d like to take the train, you’ll have to get to Feltre station (48 km from Castrozza) to take the train to Milan. Or for a bus, you have to first get to Trento to take another bus or get to Mestre Venice and then take the train to Milan.

Day 7, 8 – Milan, Lake Como

Many people wonder if they should pick Turin or Milan and Milan is definitely the better choice for city getaway. On day 7, start your day by visiting the Duomo Di Milano and spend your evening strolling around Via Monte Napoleone, Milan’s upscale fashion district.

Day 8 – Milan to Lake Como

Start early in the morning to get to Lake Como and get enough time for sightseeing during the day.

You can take a bus, train, car or drive for this short-distance trip. Milan to Como city is 50 km away compared to Bellagio, which is 80 km away.

Milan to Lake Como is a 60-70 minute drive unless there’s more traffic on the road. Como has traffic restrictions, and vehicles cannot enter certain parts.

To travel by train, take a train from Milan to Como Lago station . To get to Bellagio, choose a train that stops at Varenna Esino station, the closest train station to Bellagio. To get to other towns in the Como region, get to Como station and travel from the Como station to other towns.

To get around the Lake Como area, you can do so by bus, by boat and by local train. Trains cover the eastern shores. The western coast of Como does not have a train service connecting the villages.

You can take a bus from just outside the station to get from Como to Colico. ASF autolinee runs buses which are cheap and convenient.

If you’re driving yourself, find out about the parts of Lake Como fall under the Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL) , which means you cannot drive in some areas unless you are a local resident. You can find parking and use the ferries to get from one village to another.

During summers in Europe and otherwise, it is common for visitors to get around the lake via boat. You can take a ferry, hydrofoil or private water taxi.

You can take the aliscafo/hydrofoil to travel quickly from one place to another. The hydrofoil stops at only limited locations. You can check the timetable and list of stops here .

Here are the top things to do near Lake Como. Pick based on what interests you –

If you visit between mid-March and mid-November, you can see Villa Balbianello , Villa Melzi and Villa Monastero . At times, they are open during the off-season/winter as well. Check their websites before visiting.

Water sports – You can try water sports like skiing, waterboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing, and diving.

Return to Milan by the end of the day.

If you want to stay back in the Lake Como region, on Day 9, you can take a train from Lake Como to Milan and take the high-speed Frecciarossa train from Milan to Rome.

Day 9 – Milan to Rome

Driving from Milan to Rome would need about 5 and a half hours. Avoid taking the bus – it takes 8 or more hours. Either drive, take a flight or take the high-speed train. A Frecciarossa train (high-speed train) runs from Milan to Rome every hour, which takes only 3 hours and 10 minutes to reach Rome.

Day 10, 11, 12 – Rome  

There’s so much to see in Rome that I suggest you keep aside three days to admire the city’s historical attractions and art. If you want to spend only two days in Rome , consider staying back near Lake Como for a day. Lake Como has many accommodation options, some of which offer gorgeous lake views. Start from Lake Como to Rome on Day 10 instead of 9 then.

Italy Itinerary 2 – 12 day itinerary Italy for Venice – Milan, Lake Como – Rome – Sardinia

Day 1, 2 – venice.

Here’s a 2 day Venice itinerary . If you’ve already been, a visit to the islands of Burano and Murano is worth it. This post should help in getting from Venice to Burano .

Day 3 – Venice to Milan

Trenitalia runs frequent high-speed trains between Venice and Milan. It takes between 2.5 to 3.5 hours to reach Venice. Tickets range between 21euros to 92 euros depending on the train you take. Check for train availability and prices here .

Or drive from Venice to Milan (270 km). If you want to take a road trip and have a few extra days, Padua, Verona and Brescia are en route when you drive from Venice to Milan. You can spend a day or more in each of those cities.

Many bus companies offer direct bus services. FlixBus offers the fastest bus, which takes 3 hours 5 minutes. Travelling by bus could take longer as this route can be unpredictable when it comes to traffic.

Avoid flying if possible. The distance between the cities isn’t much, but you’d be spending a lot on the flight ticket, so the other travel options are better.

Day 4, 5 – 2 days in Milan (One day can be spent at Lake Como)

You can spend one day in Milan and one day in the Lake Como region.

Day 6 – Milan to Rome

Day 7,8 – Rome

Day 9 – Rome to Sardinia

A ferry leaves from Civitavecchia airport, Rome, every night at 8 pm and reaches Cagliari port, Sardinia, in the morning around 9 am. You can also take a flight from Rome to Cagliari, which takes a little more than an hour to reach.

Low-cost airlines Ryanair and Voltea have at least one non-stop flight on this route every day.

Day 10,11, 12 – Sardinia

Sardinia is where tourists come to relax on the beaches and see the island’s extraordinary natural beauty. Cagliari, where you’ll land after taking the flight, is the capital city. These places are worth seeing in Cagliari –

There are many beaches in Cagliari. Poetto Beach is very popular among tourists. You can also spend time at either of these beaches in Cagliari – Calamosca Beach, Cala Fighera Beach, Sant’Elia Beach and Cala Regina Beach.

Take an early morning flight from Rome on Day 9. Since the flight from Rome to Cagliari will be only an hour-long, you can reach Cagliari, settle into the hotel, and use the other half for some sightseeing or relaxing at the beach.

Spend day 10 as well in Cagliari. Spend day 11 and day 12 in other regions of Sardinia. Or you could spend the first few days in any one of these other regions and spend your last day in Cagliari before flying out home.

For the remaining two days, either spend time in Villasimius or Stintino –

Villasimus – This commune is only 62 km away from Cagliari. Simius, Punta Molentis and Timi Ama and Porto Giunco are some of the scenic beaches in Villasimius.

Stintino –   Stintino is at the island’s north end, while Cagliari is at the south end. It’s 254 km away from Cagliari (a 3-hour long drive). Stintino has La Pelosa beach, regularly ranked as the best beach in Sardinia.

Other than La Pelosa, there are many more unspoilt beaches in Stintino. You can take a boat tour or try water sports such as scuba diving, snorkelling and others in the clear water here.

Italy Itinerary 3 – 12 day itinerary Italy for Rome – Naples – Amalfi Coast – Sicily

Day 1, 2, 3 – rome.

Day 4 – Rome to Naples

Naples is 225 km away from Rome

Take the Trenitalia high-speed train from Rome to Naples. It takes an hour and 15 minutes to get from Rome to Naples via this train. A bus ride will take about 3 hours. If you want to drive, the trip needs 2 to 2.5 hours or longer if there is unusual traffic.

Day 5 and 6 – Naples

Spend your first day in Naples seeing the Naples Royal Palace, Underground Naples, Cappella Sansevero and Castel dell’Ovo and Naples Cathedral. In the evening, walk around the city’s coast. Try Neapolitan pizza, which the city is well known for.

On Day 6, take a day trip to Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Day 7 – Naples to Amalfi Coast

There are 13 towns on Amalfi Coast. The four main ones are Positano, Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello. You can take a ferry or a direct bus from Naples to Amalfi Coast. The distance would vary a little based on which town you want to get to, but Amalfi Coast is quite close to Naples.

The four main towns mentioned here are 55-65 km away from Naples.

Day 7 (second half), Day 8 – Amalfi Coast

Since it would be a really short trip from Naples to Amalfi, you can start early morning on Day 7 and do some sightseeing in the noon and evening in Amalfi town.

See the Duomo di Amalfi and the Museo della Carta . Spend time by the beach or drive along the coastal road. For day 8, take the ferry from Amalfi to Positano and spend your day in Positano.

From Amalfi/Positano, you can take a trip to see the Blue Grotto. The Grotta Azzura , commonly called the Blue Grotto, is an unusual sea cave on the coast of Capri.

Tourists visit the cave to see the unique blue water and illuminated sea cave that looks so due to sunlight passing through an underwater cavity. Ferry service runs between Amalfi and Blue Grotto and Positano and Blue Grotto, which can take you there in an hour.

The cave has a 14€ entry which includes the service fee for a small boat that you can take to enter the cave.

Day 9 – Amalfi Coast to Sicily

Train, ferries or getting there by road would be very time-consuming: it would need at least 10 to 14 hours. It’s better to get back to Naples airport from Amalfi/Positano (62-65 km away) and take the flight to Palermo, Sicily. There are usually only two to three flights a day from Naples to Palermo, so book tickets in advance for this trip.

Day 10,11,12 – Sicily

Many regions in Sicily have beautiful beaches. There’s no way you could see everything in three days. Pick a region in Sicily and spend your time exploring the same region.

Fly into the capital city, Palermo and use the city as a base to explore beaches around the area. Palermo has some stunning churches and historic sites. Here are the places you should see in Palermo –

Italy Itinerary 4 – 12 day itinerary Italy for Rome – Milan – Lake Como – Pisa – Florence – Siena – Amalfi Coast

Day 1, day 2 – milan.

Day 3 – Lake Como  

Itinerary 1 has details on how you can travel from Milan to the Lake Como region and information on how to spend time near Lake Como.

For the Milan-Pisa-Florence part of this itinerary, hiring a car and driving the short distances between the city is a great option. However, if you wouldn’t like to drive, the cities are connected via bus/train.

Day 4 – Milan to Pisa (half-day left for Pisa sightseeing)

Take the high-speed Trenitalia train from Milan to Pisa. Take the direct train, which takes about 4 hours. Depending on which train you take, you’d get either half a day on Day 4 to do sightseeing in Pisa or both half of day 4 and the first half of day 5 for sightseeing in Siena. Direct buses also operate from Milan to Pisa.

In Siena, spend your time seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Piazza del Duomo.

Since Pisa and Siena are very close, it’s easy to halt in Pisa for sightseeing. If you think this would be stressful, skip Pisa in this itinerary. Or you could spend longer in Pisa and Amalfi Coast/Sicily and use this itinerary for planning a 14 or 15-day trip to Italy.

Day 5 – Pisa to Siena

Siena is only 127 km from Pisa.

Driving or a direct transfer is most convenient.

There is no direct train. But you can start from Pisa, take another train at Empoli and reach Siena in about 2 hours. Or you can take a direct bus from Pisa to Siena, which will take 2.5 hours.

Day 5, 6 – Siena

Day 7 – Siena to Florence

Florence is about 77 km from Siena. You can either drive, take the bus or train to Florence. All options will need between 1 to 2 hours.

These buildings lie in the historic centre of Florence, where only residents with permits, taxis and buses can drive. Most of the attractions listed here are close to each other – within a distance of 1.5 km. You can walk from one place to another quickly or take the bus.

Book tickets online in advance for the Cathedral, Pitti Palace galleries, Uffizi gallery, and Accademia gallery, as you’ll find long queues here, especially during the peak season.

Day 9 – Florence to Amalfi Coast

The best way to travel is to drive to Amalfi or arrange for a transfer by car. Direct buses run from Florence to Amalfi. The bus journey needs 8-11 hours.

Trains are not ideal. Amalfi Coast has one train station, Vietri Sul Mare, which is served only by regional trains. There is no direct train from Florence to Vietri Sul Mare. But if you want to travel by train, you can change the train at Naples station to get to Vietri Sul Mare. Vietri Sul Mare station is 21 km away from Amalfi.

Day 10,11, 12 – Amalfi Coast

Ideally, plan your 12 days Italy itinerary from March to May (spring) or autumn (September-November), which is the best time to visit Italy. Maximum tourists visit during summer (June-August) and the first two weeks of September.

Best 12 Day Italy Itinerary (2024) – For First Time Visitors

My husband and I, big fans of all things Italian, just had an amazing 12-day trip through the heart of Italy. We went from ancient sites in Rome to sunny beaches on the Amalfi Coast, saw amazing art in Florence, and even rode gondolas in Venice! In this blog post we will take you through some of the highlights of our trip and share our 12-day Italy itinerary for first time visitors, in case you’re planning your own Italian trip. Get ready to feel the sun on your skin, the aroma of fresh pasta in your nose, and the echoes of “ciao bella” bouncing off your ears!

Days 1-3: Roman Rhapsody

Rome, baby, Rome! Our Italian love affair started with a bang in the Eternal City. Imagine walking into the colosseum, feeling the ghosts of gladiators in your sandals, the roar of the crowd echoing in your ears. We tossed a coin (of course!) in the Trevi Fountain, whispering our wildest wishes into its sparkling embrace. Each day was a sensory feast – the aroma of freshly baked bread from cozy panetteria mingling with the melodic symphony of Italian chatter.

Since this was our first visit to Italy, we did all the touristy sightseeing at Rome and boy, was it worth it!

We started early in the morning and headed straight to the Colosseum , the city’s iconic symbol and a testament to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Imagine this: you walk into this giant stone beast, sunlight filtering through ancient arches, and suddenly you’re transported back 2,000 years – gladiators clashing, crowds roaring, all that blood and sand drama—you can practically smell it! We even peeked into the gladiatorial school (turns out, sword practice was mandatory—no excuses!).

After exploring the Colosseum, we headed to the Roman Forum , just a short walk away and strolled through this vast archaeological site where political, social and religious activity flourished centuries ago. We wandered amongst the ruins of temples, basilicas and arches to immerse ourselves in the history of the past.

Tip: We booked our tickets 2 months in advance to dodge the queues through Getyourguide . The skip-the-line passes to Colosseum and Roman forum get booked really fast, so we highly recommend to book this much in advance to avoid wasting time in long queues.

After soaking up the vibes of the Forum, we hiked up Palatine Hill . The view from the top was like a living postcard of Rome. It was hard to believe that the emperors once strolled these very grounds. We found a tranquil oasis of gardens and ancient palaces, with breathtaking views of the Forum and Circus Maximus.

Later, we stumbled upon this tiny cafe near the Roman Forum, tucked away like a secret. The carbonara, oh the carbonara! Creamy heaven mixed with black pepper and crispy pancetta, each bite a symphony of deliciousness.

Next morning we found ourselves in the smallest country in the world – Vatican City . We visited the Vatican Museums which were a treasure trove of art. The Raphael Rooms and the Map Room were jaw-dropping. And, of course, the Sistine Chapel – Michelangelo’s masterpiece. The ceiling frescoes, are not just paintings, they’re swirling angels and divine light, enough to make you question your earthly existence.

If you plan to visit the Vatican museums, please pre-book a tour in advance. I recommend taking a guided tour of the Vatican with fast-track access  to learn about the history and opulence of Vatican.

After visiting the museums, we took a break for lunch in the nearby Prati neighbourhood, known for its delicious trattorias and local cuisine. We also enjoyed a lemon sorbet at Gelateria del Monte , for which my taste buds are still singing odes of joy!

In the afternoon, we visited Castel Sant’Angelo , a stunning cylindrical fortress originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, and then headed to the legendary Bridge of Angels (Ponte Sant’Angelo) to enjoy a truly enchanting moment of sunset. This ancient bridge connects the city centre to Castel Sant’Angelo, creating a breathtaking crossing over the Tiber River.

Day 3 was all about soaking up the Roman vibes. We chilled at the Pantheon, a temple to ancient gods, then wandered through the Campo de’ Fiori market , a riot of colorful flowers and fresh produce.

Moving ahead to the Piazza Navona , a beautiful Baroque square decorated with stunning fountains, street performers and artists. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere and soaked up the energy of the city. From there, we headed to the famous Trevi Fountain , one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Legend has it that throwing a coin into the fountain guarantees your return to Rome.

Top Tip : The Trevi Fountain is always swarming with tourists during the day. Come back early in the morning, at sunrise, for a completely different atmosphere. You’ll be able to enjoy this place in peace and quiet, and take photos without other people in them. Also, avoid the tourist traps directly outside the Trevi Fountain. Instead, walk 5 mins to the locals-approved  Ristorante Sora Lucia and enjoy their delicious carbonara. Trust me, you’ll find the best meals off the beaten path!

Days 4-5: Amalfi Coast Serenade 

We boarded a slow train from Rome and went straight up till Salerno . Trading city vibes for coastal bliss, we arrived in Salerno, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. This pastel paradise stole our hearts with its turquoise waters lapping at the shore, boats bobbing like colorful toys, and houses cascading down cliffs like a watercolor painting.

A lot of travelers usually stay at Sorrento, but I would recommend visiting Salerno instead, as it is less crowded and the accommodations are a lot more affordable compared to the popular villages of the Amalfi coast.

We checked-in to our hotel and then went straight up to the Salerno port to board a ferry up till Amalfi . You can easily book the ferry tickets at the port, but we recommend booking it online through the Travelmar’s website. The ferry takes only 30 minutes to reach Amalfi from Salerno and is a lot more convenient than taking a local bus.

Reaching Amalfi was like stepping into a dream. Narrow streets snaked between colorful houses, adorned with overflowing bougainvillea- their sweet scent weaving through the air. We got lost in a lemon grove, the citrusy aroma so intense it felt like we were swimming in sunshine. Imagine biting into a sun-warmed lemon, tartness dancing on your tongue, and that’s Amalfi – fresh, vibrant, and bursting with life.

The next day, we again boarded a ferry from Salerno, but this time up till Positano. This vertical village clinging to the cliffs is basically Instagram IRL. Houses in shades of peach, ochre, and lemon tumbled down towards the turquoise water. We wandered through boutique-filled lanes, each corner unfolding a postcard-perfect vista.

Photo Op Alert: Grab your widest lens and head to the Spiaggia Grande beach. Capture the iconic view of colorful houses cascading down to the shore, the boats bobbing like lazy toys, and the sun painting the sky in fiery hues. Trust me, your phone storage will thank you!

As we sailed back to Salerno, the setting sun painted the sky in a thousand shades of orange and pink. A group of teenagers on another boat started belting out Italian pop music, their voices echoing across the water. We all spontaneously joined in, clapping and laughing, strangers united by the magic of the Amalfi Coast. Remember, sometimes the best moments are unexpected, serendipitous bursts of joy.

Days 6-8: Tuscan Tranquility

Day 6: With hearts full of coastal bliss, we took a fast train to Florence – the cradle of the Renaissance, and reached the Santa Maria Novella station. From the station, we went straight up to the Accademia Gallery, which is about a 15-minute walk. This is a very popular site, as it is home to Michelangelo’s David . During the high season, it gets extremely crowded, so we recommend reserving tickets online ahead of time to ensure entry and the cheapest price.

From the Accademia Gallery we walked up to the the Florence Cathedral aka the Duomo. It is part of the monumental complex of Santa Maria del Fiore. This “complex” includes not only the cathedral, but also a museum, the bell tower, the dome, the baptistery, and Santa Reparata. One of the best things to do in Florence is to climb the steps to the top of the dome. Not only did we see the inside of the cathedral, but we also witnessed the views of the frescoes on the inside of the dome, plus the 360 degree views over Florence.

We then took a stroll around the streets of Florence and watched the sunset at Ponte Vecchio . The city lit up at night and we enjoyed a glass of Aperol Spritz at one of those small bars across the other side of the river.

Overall, we spent our time ‘enjoying the vibe’ of the city rather than trying to ‘do everything’ and exhaust ourselves during our short stay, and that’s what I would recommend if you’re planning a one or two day trip to Florence.

The next day, we traded city sirens for rolling hills and medieval echoes. Our first stop was San Gimignano, a town straight out of a fairytale. Towers pierced the sky, whispering tales of knights and castles, and narrow streets were lined with shops selling artisanal crafts and locally-made honey. We even climbed the Torre Grossa, the tallest of the towers, for a 360-degree view that made us gasp.

As we sat in a sun-drenched restaurant in San Gimignano, devouring plates of fresh pasta and sipping local Chianti, a group of elderly locals started singing traditional folk songs. Their voices, weathered and warm, filled the square with a melody as old as the town itself. It was a moment of pure magic, unexpected and unforgettable.

Travel Tip: Consider taking a road trip through Tuscany to enjoy the gorgeous landscape and pit stops at multiple towns like San Gimignano. We rented our car from Sixt from Florence which gave us freedom to adventure out at our own pace.

Then came Pisa, where the Leaning Tower tilted like a playful drunkard. We posed for silly photos, pretending to hold it upright (spoiler alert: we failed miserably!). Later, we wandered through the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Duomo’s white marble gleaming under the Tuscan sun. Remember, there’s more to Pisa than just a leaning tower – explore the baptistery and cathedral for a full dose of architectural glory!

On our final day in Tuscany, we journeyed to Volterra, an ancient town perched on a hill. We explored the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci, marveling at terracotta warrior statues and gold jewelry that glittered like forgotten dreams. Later, we wandered through the town’s alabaster workshops, mesmerized by skilled artisans transforming rough stones into delicate sculptures. Take a workshop and try your hand at this unique local art form!

Travel Tip: Pack comfortable shoes! Tuscany is best explored on foot, wandering through quaint alleys and soaking up the atmosphere.

Our final chapter unfolded in Val d’Orcia , a landscape painted in shades of gold and green. Rolling hills dotted with cypress trees stretched as far as the eye could see, terracotta farmhouses basked in the sun, and the air smelled of rosemary and freshly baked bread. We rented bikes and pedaled through this golden Eden, stopping to take photos every five minutes (guilty as charged!). Feeling inspired? Rent a Vespa for a retro-chic way to explore the countryside!

When in Tuscany, you cannot miss indulging in a wine tasting experience, savoring different vintages while learning about the terroir and the passion of Tuscan winemakers. I highly recommend taking this small group tour , if you’re in Florence and do not wish to rent a car and drive in Tuscany.

Days 9-11: Venetian Voyage

Bidding farewell to the Tuscan sun-kissed hills, we boarded a train from Florence, hearts fluttering with anticipation, as Venice, the city of romance, awaited. Stepping off at Santa Lucia station, we were instantly swept away by the city’s ethereal beauty – gondolas gliding through shimmering canals, ancient palazzos reflected in the water, and a symphony of clinking bells filling the air.

Our adventure begins in Piazza San Marco , a square so grand it makes your jaw drop faster than a rogue spritz. St. Mark’s Basilica gleams like a mosaic-covered spaceship, pigeons pirouette like feathered ballerinas, and the Doge’s Palace whispers tales of doges and intrigue. We grabbed a coffee at Caffè Florian , the oldest caffè in the world, and soaked in the Venetian vibes like a true maestro.

Travel Tip: Pre-book tickets for St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace! Trust me, skipping the line feels like winning the lottery in sequins.

Later, we hopped on a Vaporetto , the Venetian water bus, like locals in the know. The wind whipped through our hair as we glided past colorful houses reflected in the canals, feeling like gondoliers in training (without the singing, maybe).

We stumbled upon a tiny bacaro (wine bar) tucked away in a hidden alley. The cicchetti (Venetian tapas) were like edible poems – fritters crispy as laughter, burrata drizzled with honey, and tiny spritzes the color of sunshine.

For dinner, Osteria Ai Pugni boasts the most melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi and tiramisu you’ll ever encounter. Just be prepared for singing waiters and boisterous laughter – it’s all part of the Venetian charm! We learned that Venice is all about those hidden gems, so keep your eyes peeled!

Next day, we conquered the Rialto Bridge , Venice’s bustling heart. Souvenir stalls overflowed with masks and Murano glass, pigeons begged for crumbs (tourists, take note!), and street performers serenaded us with tunes that made us want to twirl.

Packing Tip: Ditch the bulky suitcase! Venice calls for comfortable shoes, flowy dresses that billow in the breeze, and a wide-brimmed hat for those golden-hour strolls.

Now, onto the real business – gelato! Gelateria Nico is a Venetian institution, boasting scoops the size of your head and flavors so creative they’ll make your taste buds tango. Nutella & caramelized figs? Pistachio & stracciatella? The possibilities are endless (and dangerously delicious).

As we strolled along the waterfront at sunset, the sky ignited in a symphony of oranges and pinks. Gondoliers serenaded their passengers, their voices floating across the water like whispers on the breeze. We found ourselves sharing a spontaneous slow dance right there on the pier, Venice working its magic once again.

Our final day was all about island hopping. Burano , with its rainbow-colored houses, stole our hearts (and Instagram feeds). We wandered through lace shops, marveling at delicate creations that looked like spiderwebs spun from moonlight. Later, we ventured to San Giorgio Maggiore , home to a majestic basilica and breathtaking views of the city. Imagine basking in the sun on the island’s green carpet, the campanile chiming like a gentle reminder of time well spent.

Beyond the Itinerary:

Venice is a city to be savored slowly, getting lost in its hidden alleyways, discovering tucked-away trattorias, and soaking in the atmosphere at a local bacaro (wine bar). We recommend taking a cooking class to learn Venetian specialties, exploring the islands beyond Burano, and even venturing out to the Lido beach for a dose of sunshine and Adriatic vibes.

The day of departure- we packed our bags, and said goodbye to Venice- reminiscing the fantastic time throughout our trip in Italy. The First-Timer’s 12 Night Italy Itinerary

Having only visited Italy for a short three days along the Amalfi Coast, I was extremely excited to come back for a more in-depth trip. My husband and I both agreed that we wanted a mixture of experiences during our 12 night Italy itinerary.

There’s so many questions about Italy so I wanted to take the time to write out our Italy Itinerary.  For our first time together, we decided to stay north and on the coast, skipping Rome, Amalfi, Milan for this trip. Italy is an incredibly easy country to travel through — renting and driving a car is rather relaxed for international driving, the trains are simple to use, and everywhere you go is picturesque.

Planning our itinerary, we chose to start our time in Tuscany where we had freedom to explore and have day trips. Afterwards, Florence made sense as we needed to drop the car off, so we headed into town for a few nights afterwards. Cinque Terre called our names after seeing the beautiful coastline, and we couldn’t get enough of sunbathing and the Mediterranean Sea. The final destination was tough to choose, but ultimately we went with Venice for a few reasons, the biggest being that the city is sinking. We came back from the trip feeling relaxed and loved every destination on our Italy itinerary.

Good to Know Before Traveling to Italy

• Train travel in Italy is wonderful. I always recommend arriving a little early to the train station.
• Renting a car gets you access to off-the-beaten path places, so I would encourage it for the first trip.
• English is widely spoken, so do not worry about any language barrier!
• Italian food is not a thing — each region has its own cuisine. For instance in Tuscany, the region is known for favorites like boar tagliatelle. Try new foods, and you’ll be wonderfully surprised!
• Credit or cash? Both are important and many places accept credit. However, cash always wins, so be prepared to use it more frequently.
• Taxis — before getting in, ask the price. In most places, the fares are set between airports and town centers.

Best time of year to visit Italy: Most travel guides would encourage the best of weather and the least amount of crowds. Somewhere in later September or early May is a great option. With that said, each season has its own magic.

12 Nights: Tuscany – Florence – Cinque Terre – Venice

Day 1: land in florence, head to san gimignano.

Rent a car and make the short hour-and-a-half drive into Tuscany. San Gimignano is a great place to spend an afternoon, and couldn’t be a more beautiful place to begin your journey in Italy. Read: What and Where Guide to San Gimignano. Stay: The Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel Review  or Book Here.

Day 2: San Gimignano

If you felt like you didn’t spend enough time in San Gimignano, head into town early before the crowds and enjoy having the town all to yourself. From here, I would spend the day road tripping through Chianti. The iconic region is full of great towns and wineries to explore. Read: One Day Road Trip Guide to Chianti . (A great day itinerary).

Day 3: Siena

As you check out, pick out a few towns to stop along your way down south. Siena is a lovely place to stop off at to explore the square, and have a lunch. Arrive to your next hotel, where you can base yourself in the southern part of Tuscany. Stay: Castello Di Casole

Day 4: Siena, Exploring Val d’Orcia

We took a whole day to explore the Val d’Orcia region, through the hilltop towns of Montalcino, Pienza, and Montalpuciano. Read:   Mini Road Trip Guide to Siena.  (The perfect day trip!)

Day 5: Head to Florence

As your final day comes to an end, the journey back to Florence is just as breathtaking. We arrived into town around 2, after checking into our hotel. The afternoon was amazing for our first Florence day to exploring the the iconic sights. Read: A Weekend Guide to Florence . Stay : The Hotel Bernini Palace .

Day 6: Exploring Florence

Wake up early to get the most of your day and to beat the crowds. I couldn’t recommend more doing an early-access tour of the Duomo and seeing David with a skip-the-line pass. A dinner in town, and sunset along the Ponte Vecchio is a must.

Day 7: Head to Cinque Terre

The train ride into Cinque Terre is easy, with a normal stop in Pisa, you arrive in a short two and a half hours. Staying in Riomaggiore is a gem, and we loved having an afternoon to explore our base for the time in Cinque. Day 8: Cinque Terre

Waking up early to head to Vernazza and walking the trail to Monterosso was beautiful. It took around two hours to do, and the views were worth it. You can have lunch in Monterosso, and then take the train back to Riomaggiore. We went back into Corniglia to watch the sunset, and ended up having dinner in town.

Day 9: Cinque Terre

One more day to soak in the sun and take a dip in the sea. This is a great coastline to pick a spot on a rock, and set up shop for an afternoon of swimming and sunbathing. In Riomaggiore, we found a great spot around the corner from the ferry, a few hundred yards south of the main harbor, where it was quieter. Our last night we had dinner in Manarola at Trattoria dal Billy, which was our best meal in the area.

Day 10: Head to Venice

Wake up and take the train to Venice! The journey does take a bit, with transfers in Pisa and Florence, but in four hours time you’ll find yourself in one of the most magical places in the world. The afternoon was well spent getting oriented and exploring the seemingly endless canals. Our first Venice day felt like an absolute dream and was so happy we booked more than one day here. Day 11: Venice

You can easily spend a full day exploring Venice and still feel like you didn’t see it all. There’s much to do and see.

Day 12: Venice

The final day, we ended up sleeping in, but originally had planned to go to Burano and Murano. These are amazing day trips and will be doing it next time we go!

Day 13: Fly home

6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

Great trip, it’s a shame travel is such an expensive pastime, I love driving in Europe.

Thank you for the info. We are headed there this month on a cruise. Wondering if you would have any ideas on what to pack for the weather for Feb-Mar. Also, as far as money, you said credit cards and cash. Cash, as in, euros or American dollars?

You will definitely want to have some warmer layers, it’s quite cold in the winter. You’ll want to have local currency (euros), I would recommend pulling out of an ATM on arrival. Airport exchange is always the most expensive.

I’d love to do something like this, I’m obsessed with Italy!

I’ve been to Italy a few times and Lake Garda has been my favourite place to visit. I’d love to visit Venice and Florence too one day. This is a great itinerary and I agree that renting cars is great in Italy.

Seven years ago my daughter and I wanted to do a “girl’s trip” We considered many locations; Savannah, GA, Seattle, San Diego, etc. but then I heard about a 10 day “group tour” of northern Italy. While this was not something I would have ever considered, it occurred to me I would never get to share the trip with my daughter any other way. One consideration about this trip was the timing, February. Granted, there would be no tourist but it might be chilly. We bought down jackets and made our reservations.

We flew into Milan. It had not snowed in 20 years and yet that day our flight was the last to land before the airport closed. This was not at all what we planned for but what an adventure. From Milan we toured Parma to see cheese being made, Modina to see how balsamic vinegar is aged, stopping at the Enzo Ferrari Museum which was fascinating, then to Bologna where I ate the best Bolognese sauce of my life, over to Lucca which is an ancient walled city with a tiny restaurant serving carbonara like I’d never tasted before, then up the coast to Cinque Terre which looked exactly like I had seen it in pictures and it did not disappoint, then to Turin to see the Shroud of Turin. Did I mention that every day from the moment we landed, it was like being inside a snow globe and everything was breathtakingly gorgeous covered in snow. I am sure it is all more beautiful in the spring and summer but this left me speechless.

I say all of this to encourage anyone who might think they can’t travel alone or have never considered a “tour” to give it a try. My entire experience was wonderful. I have traveled many places; Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium, even Monte Carlo but this trip was more than I could have ever dreamed. I would not take for the time shared with my daughter in a country that could not have surprised me or fascinated me more.

Our journey continues to the iconic   Trevi   Fountain , the unforgettable setting of Fellini’s “ La Dolce Vita “. Picture a youthful   Anita Ekberg   beckoning   Marcello Mastroianni   into the fountain with her famous line: “ Marcello, come here! “. Following a brief pause, we’ll visit   Piazza della Rotonda   to admire the   Pantheon , a majestic temple transformed into a basilica, and Bernini’s Renaissance fountain, built in 1575.

Colloseum and Roman Forums

After some leisure time for lunch, our english-speaking guide will take us to the   Colosseum   and the   Roman Forum . Begin with the   Flavian   Amphitheater , more commonly known as the   Colosseum , an iconic symbol of Rome that attracts visitors from all over the world. We’ll then continue to the   Imperial Forums , where the remains of political life are still palpable. Epic 12 day Italy itinerary: Amalfi Coast and Puglia

See a very unique part of Italy with this 12 day Italy itinerary full of amazing day trips. No leaning tower of Pisa, the Tuscan countryside or the Trevi fountain in Rome. No, on this trip we are bringing you the beautiful and popular Amalfi Coast, followed by one day in Matera and a week in traditional Italy, Puglia! This 12 day tour of Italy will be the time of your life and full days of Italian charm. Are you ready to pack and go?

Note: for this itinerary, we expect that you will have 12 full days. Depending on your travel time, it might be wise to arrive the day before and leave the day after, making it a 14-day trip.

Are 12 days enough for italy.

You might wonder, how to see Italy in 12 days? You are right, it’s difficult. Many are looking for a 2 week Italy itinerary with Amalfi Coast. Often it is then connected with a trip to Rome or Cinque Terre. But as we have noticed, the gorgeous region of Puglia is overlooked. While it is actually perfect to combine. That said, you could also easily spend 12 days in Puglia only.

So should you go on a 12 day trip to Italy? Without a doubt, yes! 12 days in Italy and this itinerary will give you plenty to discover while going home fully satisfied. Let’s face it, not everyone has the budget or annual leave available to spend at least 6 weeks to discover all. Will you be hungry (guess what, not only for Italian food) for more after this trip? Big chance! You might just end up returning to our favourite country in Europe, Italy. Perhaps you will end up in Venice, Florence or Milan in the end anyway. But for now? Stick to this road trip and enjoy it to the fullest! 

Can we do the 12 day itinerary for Italy alone or with a guided tour?

It might feel safe sometimes to travel with a guided tour. In general, we would not advise doing so. We will always share the truth in our blogs and therefore cannot ignore the fact that Italy is packed. High season is attracting a lot of tourists from all over the world. Especially the Amalfi Coast is booming, and Puglia is more pleasant. We, therefore, recommend travelling smart in your own time but also as per your own needs. If you travel with a group or guided tour, you might feel overwhelmed walking in groups through already busy destinations at peak times of the day. You can take more advantage going on your own. Besides that, Italy is not hard to travel on your own.

Tip : Italy is the perfect road trip destination. Prices can go up very quickly. Make sure you get the best deals by booking your rental car early!

What is the best month to travel to Italy?

After all said above, what is then the best month to travel? Without surprises that would be of course low season . But considering the destination of Amalfi Coast and Puglia you do want to have good weather and enjoy warmer waters. Therefore we suggest considering this itinerary for 12 days in Italy from May to June or in September . From the end of June until the first week of September is very busy.

The cheapest months to travel to Italy would be generally between October and March. Depending on your destination in Italy. You can imagine that a city trip can increase in price around special days. However, these months would not be preferred by us as we do love a little bit more sunshine and South European summer vibes. 

Getting around Italy: how to travel from the Amalfi Coast to Puglia? 

The start of this 12 day itinerary in beautiful Italy is on the Amalfi Coast. It would make the most sense to arrive in the city of Naples by airplane . It will not be very convenient to do the rest of this 12 day Italy tour by public transport . Really? You could do it, but you might need to skip some parts of this itinerary or have shorter days. The train (the quickest option) does not stop everywhere, and the bus will surely take longer. What to pack for 12 days in Italy?

Is this always your stress factor before departure? No worries, we will help you a little bit. Now of course this also depends on your own style. And everyone has different needs for an itinerary of 12 days in Italy or wherever in the world. But these tips might help you slightly in the right direction:

• In general, the Amalfi Coast and Puglia can get really hot in the summer months. Please check the weather forecast before departure. Rain is still an option. 
• You are also in areas with the open sea, therefore it can also be windy or cool down at night so do not forget something light to cover yourself just in case. Italy starts to come alive later in the evening. Families come out on the boulevards after the heat. So be ready for evening entertainment. 
• The Amalfi Coast, especially Capri, is also considered a jet set area. If you like to dress up, you can totally do so! Some women walk around in the prettiest dresses and men dress up too. Puglia is less jet set, but your linen outfits will still look amazing! (pssst, we are linen lovers and wear that every day anywhere in Italy) 
• The water is super tempting to jump in, do not forget your swim outfit!  
• If you want, you can also hike on the Amalfi Coast. It is not a heavy hike, but you might better prepare some activewear to bring.
• For this trip we estimate 3 days with longer travel time, so be comfy .
• For the rest: flip-flops, sandals, sneakers, shorts, skirts, dresses… be you!

Tip: Plan this trip far in advance

We cannot stress enough that you should book this trip far in advance. And that is actually for different reasons. First of all due to availability. The Amalfi Coast is booming. The hotels are quickly fully booked, especially for the high season. In Puglia, you might have a bit more opportunities. Still, as always, you have a big opportunity to miss out on the nicest places for the best prices if you book late. So secondly, the prices are going up rather quickly. And we have seen some insane hotel costs for the Amalfi region!

Besides that, as a third reason to keep in mind is the rental car . Since Covid hit, we have seen the prices and availability for car rentals going upside down in multiple countries. Many car rental companies sold their cars during the pandemic as no one was allowed to travel. Since the world opened up again they have had less availability and increased prices. Now since 2022 we also have to deal with high inflation in Europe , which is not helping much for the travel budget either.

Where to stay during this 12 day itinerary in Italy?

So many places to visit in Italy on this 12 day itinerary. But that surely doesn’t require you to stay in 12 different places. Pick your accommodation smartly so that you only need to stay in 3 places and still be able to see all of this itinerary. That will definitely make your Italy tour perfect!

The places you will visit along the Amalfi Coast do require more travel time in between. Do note that accommodation in Positano is most often pretty expensive compared to the rest of Italy. We split up the recommended accommodations per wishes you might have for your stay:

Accommodation in Amalfi Coast

• With great views over Positano: Villa Dalu or Hotel Eden Roc Suites
• Centrally located in the Amalfi Coast region and cheaper: Hotel Il Pino and Hotel Villa Bellavista
• Lovely in the charming town of Amalfi: Terrazza Duomo on the main square, Belvedere Apartment or Villa Lara Hotel
• Budget, more inland: stay in Agerola about a 1-hour drive from Positano and 30 minutes from Amalfi. Also, a nice village to stay in with great views over the sea. As we were travelling with family, we booked a Bed and Breakfast with 3 rooms and shared living space: B&B Kebontà . The host was extremely helpful in making our stay unforgettable and made breakfast fresh from his own garden.

Accommodation in Matera

We recommend you stay in the area of Martina Franca, Alberobello and Locorotondo. From here you can easily visit all in the region.

Day 1: Positano

We start this itinerary on the Amalfi Coast for 4 days. We will bring you right away to the place that many know Italy for. That picture-perfect village on the cliffs , Positano. And we fully agree, this place is a dream for the eyes! Potentially a little less for the feet and legs as you surely need to walk uphill and many steps. The small alleyways through the village do give a great vibe and are pretty romantic in the evening with warm light around. You will also notice that some of the prettiest views over the village and sea just pop up around corners.

During the day there is enough entertainment. While walking around in the village you will quickly notice many boutiques (linen!) and ceramic shops. The last one is especially typical for this beautiful region. You will see ceramics in all colours and shapes. Besides that, if you forget some sandals you do not have to worry. You can have them custom-made in many different designs all around.

Want to catch some sunrays on this 12 day itinerary in sunny Italy? Positano also has beaches, with Spiaggi Grande as the main beach. You can rent a sunbed and umbrella if you like. Other fun things to do in Positano are: take a boat trip (Bluestar Positano is well known), and many places offer a cooking class! (Pizza making in a private home), rent a Vespa to travel around, check out a beachclub (Arienzo Beach Club), or another cafe/restaurant with excellent terraces for the views.

Day 2: Amalfi

The village with the same name as the coast, Amalfi. While you have some areas along the sea, the main part of the city is inside the town walls. To start it is nice to walk along the Piazzale dei Protontini. Walking towards the tip you are surrounded by the water of the port and will have a gorgeous view of Amalfi. Afterwards, you continue your walk into the city centre. Piazza Duomo is a true vibe with the beautiful cathedral , big steps to sit, terraces around and multiple shops. You can visit the cathedral, or just absorb the surroundings.

You will quickly notice that it is all about lemons in Amalfi! And they know very well what to do with it: combine it with liquor for Limoncello . Totally worth trying a sip! Fresh seafood is all around as well. A Fritto Misto from the takeaway fish shop C.I.C.A. is a must. Just follow the main street, where you will be impressed by all the shops: ceramics , bags , sandals and clothing . If you love real leather and linen, you will be more than fine! Another unique thing to do is to visit the Amalfi Paper Museum , where you can even make some paper yourself!

Day 3: Ravello

It is time to go more inland but on great heights. Ravello is like a small piece of heaven on the Amalfi Coast . Walking around here you can feel true charm and romance. And not just because of the impressive views or gardens. Yes, the area is very lush green. Having also less mass tourism, Ravello is a perfect day trip.

The villas in Ravello are true eye-catchers. The two most famous villas are Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. And that is mostly due to the stunning gardens with spectacular views over the sea and cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. When visiting Villa Cimbrone you can visit the famous “infinity terrace” . It is to fall in love with! I think we really just stood there for 20 minutes admiring it all.

Take it easy today with an easy stroll and terrace moment at the main square. Breathe in, breathe out. During the summer months, you can also enjoy more musical entertainment during the Ravello Festival .

Day 4: Boat trip to Capri or active hiking

It is up to you what you feel like today. Yes, this 12 day itinerary includes free days in Italy. Capri , a relatively small island in front of the Amalfi Coast, is for some a must-visit. It is known for its rich and famous lifestyle. But that is not all. The nature and waters around are wonderful . You can do tons of boat trips visiting some famous sights like the “Blue Grotto”. A trip to Capri is not necessarily cheap. There are several options to take the public ferry from Amalfi but there are also options for private boat trips that make multiple stops along the coast.

Another cheaper, option is to get active and hike the Path of the Gods . The hike starts in Bomerano (in Agerola) and ends in Nocello. However, from Nocello you can take 1500 steps down and end in Positano. The views are really amazing! From endless views over the sea , to more and more village views. You can also do the hike the other way around. But we were sure happy to take the 1500 steps down, instead of up. The hike can take around 3-5 hours if you take it nicely in holiday style. We did the hike in June, and it was very busy. So do start early to avoid the crowds. Do bring enough to drink, eat and sun protection.

Day 5: Drive to Matera with a beautiful viewpoint stop

That was it for the Amalfi Coast, time to hop on and continue to a different region in Italy on this 12 day itinerary! The drive towards Matera will be around 3 to 4 hours. You now get closer to the third oldest inhabited city in the world ! It is a surprise how they could’ve kept this out of the tourist spotlight. That did change more and more in the last years, also due to a James Bond movie, using Matera as movie scenery. Drive safe, and see you in Matera!

Before heading into the city or your hotel, you should already visit the best viewpoint to get a glimpse. It is called, and you can find it on Google under “Belvedere Murgia Timone” . If you want, you can also hike through this area.

Day 6: A day in Matera, the oldest city in Italy

This 12 day Itinerary will bring you to unique places in Italy. Matera, did you hear of it before? It is a unique destination, with the city having such a historical story to tell. It might now be recognized, but not very long ago it was still “ the shame of Italy “. The city is very different from the Amalfi Coast and Puglia. And that is mostly due to the architecture and caves . Caves? Yes, many houses and shops were built into the rocks, forming caves.

The city is a true labyrinth and there is a story to tell wherever you go. Therefore, it might be advised to go on a guided walking tour. It will be sad to leave this city, not knowing what you have actually seen. Surely, you will be impressed!

Day 7: Drive to the Puglia region

We end this itinerary in Puglia for 6 days. For the next part of this trip, we recommend you stay in the area of Martina Franca, Alberobello and Locorotondo. From here you can easily visit all in the region. The drive from Matera will take you about 1,5 hours.

You will now really enter a different region in Italy. For us, it felt like much more traditional Italy . Or the region where the food was made with real Italian mama love . Doesn’t that sound attractive? The region of Puglia is very diverse. You will not find big cities like Milan. No, everything here is admirably smaller in size with some very picturesque places. Not to mention the beautiful beaches with the prettiest blue waters! Are you ready for Puglia?

Day 8: Day trip in Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino

The Itria Valley has 3 very charming villages that are worth visiting on a day trip. The distance between the villages is around 15-20 minutes drive. It, therefore, makes it perfect to split up this day trip as follows: you start in the morning in Alberobello, the afternoon in Locorotondo and the evening with dinner in Cisternino .

To visit Alberobello in the morning, we advise you to go early. The place is famous for the Trulli houses , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And of course, this attracts some tourist buses that arrive around 10 AM. Stroll around for around 2 to 3 hours and enjoy the several viewpoints over this unique site.

The day trip continues to Locorotondo . A village that very much surprised us! We totally fell in love with this place , and we even dedicated a full blog to it: Locorotondo, Italy’s prettiest town in Puglia . The small alleys of the Centro Storico and the views of the surroundings will hopefully also make you fall in love.

Cisternino was also the evening entertainment. And that was surely a good choice! The town turns into a very romantic and vibrant place. The warm lights around light up the city beautifully. When walking around you will notice that the main square is full of Italians with family and friends enjoying food and drinks. However, do not forget to get lost in the small alleys. You might just find the most romantic restaurants there.

Day 9: Your free day to relax or take a tour

You have seen so much already on this 12 day Itinerary in beautiful Italy! Puglia is the ultimate region to also include some relaxing days. As you can also have quite some hot summer days, it might be wise to book accommodation with a swimming pool for a cool-down session. Or do you rather stay active? There are plenty of other day trips to do as per your own liking! Pick something from the list below. Or if you are in for a long drive to visit a bigger city, try Lecce or even more south Otranto with beautiful beaches and cliffs around.

Day 10: Seaside Polignano a Mare and Monopoli

Time to head up towards the seaside for a perfect day trip. Visit in the morning Polignano a Mare and continue the day in Monopoli in the afternoon. The drive between the two villages is only around 15 minutes. Polignano a Mare is known for its historical centre . Yet another village to walk around without maps, to let the alleys guide you and get lost. Get some ice cream on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, or go for a swim at the beach Lama Monachile.

When Polignano a Mare served you well, move on to Monopoli . Here you will go through a historical story with the old port (Porto Antico) and many fisher boats, the fortress Castello di Carlos V, the old town with the lovely white architecture around and as in every Italian village you can visit churches and cathedrals. Here you will see the beautiful Basilica of the Madonna della Madia . If you are lucky you might even witness a real Italian wedding taking place!

Day 11: Visit picturesque Ostuni

The last village, Ostuni , is around 30 30-minute drive if you stay in the area of Martina Franca/Locorotondo. A drive that is recognizable due to the surroundings with many olive trees and sea views in the far distance. On top of a hill, you will notice this white impressive village with yet again a great history to tell. The village with many attractive narrow cobblestone streets and Greek influences was built to protect from invaders.

When walking around in the old town you will walk past many small piazzas and flowers and plants that make it all look fantastic. It truly is like an open-air museum ! On Saturdays, there is a market, which will make your day even more exciting! An Italian market and its energy are lovely.

Day 12: Relax before departure

Day 12 of this itinerary in Italy will give you a final break before heading home. One thing we loved about Puglia is the serenity around. Where we stayed it was peaceful due to no unnecessary noises, just the birds and the sound of the wind. Take your book out or play some games of Uno and enjoy quality time.

Afterward, indulge in a delicious fish menu paired with wine at the Restaurant dei Pescatori, which boasts a terrace with stunning views of the lake. 

Continuing on, visit the winery Sorsasso for a tour and wine-tasting experience.

Day 9: Visiting Villa Carlotta

We start our visit by exploring  Milan’s crown jewel: the Duomo  (and the Duomo terraces based on opening). You will skip the lines with your licensed guide and view the Gothic spectacle that is the Duomo.

You will view the special archaeological area of  Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonte  before heading to the very top of Duomo: its rooftop, to experience one of the best views of the city. 

Following this, you will visit the  famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele  before stopping at  an exclusive restaurant for lunch .

Villa del Balbianello

On a private tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the villa’s grand halls, salons, and reception rooms, with a personal guide to provide commentary on the villa’s history and architecture.

Your boat tour begins at the port of Stresa. As you set sail, you will be greeted with stunning views of the picturesque towns and villages that dot the shoreline. The first stop on the tour is the island of Isola Bella, which is home to a magnificent Baroque palace and beautiful gardens. 

The palace, which was built in the 17th century, features ornate frescoes, marble statues, and intricate stucco work. The gardens, which cover over 10 acres, are a verdant oasis of flowers, fountains, and sculptures.

The next stop on the tour is the island of Isola Madre, which is known for its lush botanical gardens and charming villa. The gardens, which date back to the 19th century, are home to a wide variety of exotic plants and flowers, including magnolias, camellias, and rhododendrons. The villa, which was built in the 16th century, features frescoed ceilings and antique furnishings.

The last stop on the tour is the island of Isola Pescatori, which is the smallest and most traditional of the Borromean Islands. This charming island is home to a fishing village that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. You can stroll through the narrow streets, admire the colorful houses, and sample some of the local seafood.

On these packages you will travel from city to city on your own, exploring at your own pace. We have arranged transportation in most cases and day tours for you to see the destination. Enjoy the time and flexibility to linger longer or pick up the pace and see as much as possible. The choice is yours.

This tour is conducted at a medium-fast pace. Some long travel days may be required to complete this itinerary and you will typically spend two nights at each destination, with some one night stays required. This trip includes a mix of sightseeing and free time to explore at your own pace. You will be required to move about unassisted, including getting on and off vehicles, walking up and down stairs and some activities will be conducted on uneven or steep terrain. Welcome to Rome! On arrival at Rome Fiumicino airport (FCO), you will be met and transferred by private car to your hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure. 

Whether you’re booked on the 3 star or 4 star package, you will enjoy hotels located in the heart of the city with close proximity to the train station and all the sights that Rome has to offer. 

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before making your way to the meeting point to join a tour to discover Imperial Rome.

Accompanied by a local historian, step back in time as you explore Rome’s most significant ancient temples and monuments. Walk through the incredible Roman Forum surrounded by the ruins of ancient government buildings and then enjoy skip the line access as we continue our tour to the mighty Colosseum as you walk its tiers in the footsteps of gladiators and emperors past.

The rest of the day is free to explore the city on your own, or alternatively you may wish to join one of the optional tours below.

Make your way to the Vatican and meet your guide 15 mins prior for a tour of the incredible Vatican Museums. Skip the queues with your Skip The Line ticket and visit the largest art collection in the world. Your expert guide will lead you into the museum and its best galleries where you will admire frescoes, statues, tapestries and historical maps. Walk through the famous Hall of Maps and the Gallery of the Tapestries until you reach the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s Last Judgement.

Please note St. Peter's Basilica is not included in this tour.

Day 3 Rome Naples Pompeii Rome

After breakfast at the hotel, make your way to the station where you will board the high-speed train to Naples. On arrival at the station you will be met by your guide and join your group as you begin a full day excursion of the ancient city of Pompeii and Naples. First discover the famous archaeological site of Pompeii with the assistance of an expert historian. Enjoy skip the line entrance as your guide leads you through the ancient Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii has been preserved under meters of ash and pumice and now excavated ruins of streets and houses stand on display with intact frescoes and mosaics. Following this we travel to Naples where you will immerse yourself its undisputed charm on a guided tour of the city’s highlights. In the evening, return to Rome by train and make your way back to the hotel where the rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 4 Rome Florence

Make your way to Rome Termini station to board the high-speed train for your 1.5 hour journey to Florence. On arrival, make your way to the hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure.

Make your way to Piazza Mentana to join your group on an exploration of the historic and architectural evolution of the city through mediaeval centuries and its Renaissance glorious past. During this walk, you will see Piazza della Signoria with the town hall Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo, the Baptistery with its ‘Gates of Paradise’, Giotto’s independent bell tower, Brunelleschi’s Dome, Santa Trinita and Orsanmichele Church, Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the secret Vasari Corridor, as well as famous shopping streets and the Oltrarno. Also, stop for a surprise “tasting”, a nice and delicious break during your pleasant walk.  

Duration 2.5 hours

(Operates daily) Meeting Point: Piazza Mentana, 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour.

Learn to make pizza and gelato just like the Italians do! First, your professional pizza chef will show you the techniques to make your own dough, the secret of a perfect sauce, and how to stretch, roll, prepare and bake your very own pizza. Then your expert chef will fill you in on why gelato remains Italy's favourite dessert while giving you an insight into the "gelato culture" that continues to grow. Get to know the basic raw ingredients, and how to select the best products available according to specific principles during a presentation and tasting of some of the flavours used in gelato making.

(Operates daily)  Meeting Point: Via Panicale Via Panicale, 43/r, close to Florence Central Market, 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour.

Day 5 Florence Monteriggioni Siena San Gimignano Chianti Florence

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then meet your group for a full day tour of Tuscany. We first visit the ancient town of Monteriggioni known for its medieval fortifications and watchtowers. The tour then continues to Siena, where you will discover the impressive Piazza del Campo, Piazza Duomo, the Cathedral, Palazzo Pubblico and the famous Torre del Mangia. Following this, the tour will head to the walled town of San Gimignano, famous for its white wine, the world renowned Vernaccia, and its many towers, also declared a World heritage Site by UNESCO! The tour will continue with a visit to the Chianti area and a wine tasting experience of the Chianti red wine. Return to Florence in the evening where the rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 6 Florence La Spezia (Cinque Terre)

After breakfast at the hotel, make your way to the train station to board the regional train for a 2.5 hour journey to La Spezia. La Spezia is the starting city to explore the famous Cinque Terre, the stretch of coast with five fishing villages perched over the sea: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.  On arrival, make your way to our hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure. 

Included in your package is a  two-day Cinque Terre Train Card which allows access to the National Park area and the use of regional trains that connect the villages and of local buses so you can experience this fabulous region at your own pace.

Day 7 La Spezia (Cinque Terre)

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then the day is free to visit the towns of the Cinque Terre on your own using your included Cinque Terre Train Card.

Day 8 La Spezia Milan

After breakfast at the hotel, make your way back to the train station to board the intercity train for your 3.5 hr journey to Milan. On arrival, make your way to the hotel where the rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore the fashion capital on your own.

Day 9 Milan Lake Como Milan

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before making your way to the train station to take the regional train for a 40 minute journey to Como. Today you are free to discover the city of Como and its famous lake on your own. A day ticket is included for the hop-on, hop-off public boat which will allow you unlimited ferry travel to discover the lake and its beautiful towns including Bellagio and Monterosso. Spend as little or as much time in each town  exploring cobblestoned streets and quaint artisan stores. Make your way back to Como for your return regional train to Milan where the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 10 Milan Venice

After breakfast, make your way to the train station to board the high-speed train for your 2.5 hour journey to Venice. On arrival, make your way to the hotel before enjoying a 30-minute gondola ride this afternoon.

Day 11 Venice

Today you are free to explore the canals or surrounding islands of Venice on your own. Get lost wandering the winding canals, shop at the many boutiques or enjoy a gelato in one of the many piazza’s. 

Take a guided walk to admire the most characteristic and important sites of Venice - an essential tour for the historical understanding of Venice. A qualified and experienced guide will take you to the main sites which includes Piazza San Marco, Basilica San Marco, Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace), Bell Tower, Clock Tower and Procuratie. Continue to Santa Maria Formosa - history and anecdotes related to this wonderful and characteristic square. Campo San Giovanni e Paolo - the "Pantheon" of Venice, the Great School of Charity, the Captains of fortune. Marco Polo’s House and Malibran Theater - anecdotes and distant and recent history intersect in this beautiful corner of Venice. Return to San Marco through the Mercerie, a vital connection between Rialto and San Marco, and the main shopping street.

Accompanied by a qualified expert guide, walk through Campo Santa Maria Formosa, Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo (the “Pantheon” of Venice), view Marco Polo’s House and the Malibran Theatre. Return to San Marco through the main shopping area, Mercerie, vital connection between Rialto and San Marco and main shopping street. During the second part of the tour, enjoy the visit to the magnificent Doge's Palace with skip the line entrance included. Following this, visit one of the world's most majestic cathedrals, St Mark’s Basilica with skip the line entrance included. Follow a tour guide through one of the most majestic cathedrals in the world and learn about byzantine art and its religious background while taking a glimpse at the gold mosaics and marble floors.

This panoramic city tour will lead you to the discovery of the Venetian Lagoon and of its origins through a suggestive boat excursion that will stop in the three most important islands of the city: Murano, Burano and Torcello. On board, an expert hostess will tell you the story of each island, revealing their peculiarities and traditions. In Murano, you will visit an historical glassblowing factory, where you will be shown how they still work the typical glass that made Venice famous all over the world. In Burano, the island known for its colorful houses, you will admire the famous hand-made laces. Last stop is Torcello, where you will witness the vestiges of the first settlements of the inhabitants of Venice.

This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub. The flight portal will allow you to search for all available airfares to your destination. The function works like most general flight search engines allowing you to select your preferred airline, book different cabin classes (eg. Business class) and view flight durations and transit times to your destination. 

The flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub once the following criteria has been met:

• Your booking is confirmed
• Your departure date is within 11 months
• You  have completed your passenger detail form

Visa & Passport

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.

As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

3 – Moderate Tour: A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.

Tipping A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. While tipping is not customary, it's of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many destinations.

You may also consider tipping your tour leader and driver for outstanding service throughout your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Train - Reserved Seats Please note that some train lines do not provide a seat reservation which means the seat is available on a first come first served basis. This apply to Second Class and First Class.

The seat is reserved on the following train rides only : Rome - Naples / Rome -Florence / Milan -Venice.

The seat reservation is not available on the following train rides (even on 1st Class Upgrade) : Florence - La Spezia / La Spezia - Milan / Milan - Como.

Health & Mobility Requirements

All participants must be in good physical condition to fully engage in this journey. For the safety and welfare of yourself and fellow travellers, if you are feeling unwell prior to departure, we advise staying home and contacting us to arrange alternate plans.

Prior to selecting your trip, carefully review the itinerary to assess your ability to comfortably manage our travel style. Please be aware that if, based on evaluation by our leader or local representative, a participant is deemed unable to safely complete the itinerary, we retain the right to exclude them from all or part of the trip without reimbursement.

It is advisable to consult your physician for current medical travel advisories and any required vaccinations before embarking. We recommend carrying a first aid kit and any necessary medications in their original packaging, as they may not be readily available during travel. For those carrying medication, it's essential to check your government's foreign travel guidelines for local restrictions or regulations.

As a traveller from USA, Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa you will need an adaptor for types C, E, F, L.

• Unfortunately we cannot offer you a visa application service. Whether you need a visa or not depends on your nationality and where you wish to travel. Assuming your home country does not have a visa agreement with the country you're planning to visit, you will need to apply for a visa in advance of your scheduled departure.

• For any tour departing before 23rd June 2024 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after 23rd June 2024, a minimum payment of €375 is required to confirm your booking with Omega Tours.
