This 3 days/2 nights takes you to the white sand beach of Pagudpud, the imposing 20-windmill farm of Bangui, the creamy white rock formations of Kapurpurawan, the winding viaduct of Patapat and the towering lighthouse of Cape Bojeador. After visiting the north, the group will be brought to the southern part of the region for a historical and gastronomical extravaganza. Take a trip down memory lane as you stroll the cobblestone alleys of Vigan City, visit the old Baroque churches, Malacanang of the north. Don’t forget to sample their famous bagnet and empanada. Before going home, make sure you have some inabel Iloco for pasalubong.

The topography of the region makes it a good stage for all sorts of exhilarating adventures like sandboarding at the La Paz sand dunes in Laoag, surfing the waves of Pagudpud or that of San Juan in La Union and hiking Mount Tirad. If you need an adrenaline rush, Ilocos region will not disappoint. If you're looking for a fascinating culinary experience, the Ilocanos boasts of unpretentious, simple but extremely tasty dishes your tongue will ever encounter. Bagnet, empanada, dinengdeng, pinakbet, poqui-poqui, warek-warek, buridibud. You can already work up an appetite by just saying these dishes names. History and culture is a way of life here. Art is manifested through their weave, churches and pottery.

Background information

The Ilocos Region, also known as Region I, is situated between the West Philippine Sea, CAR, the Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon. It was originally composed of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union. Pangasinan, which used to be part of Central Luzon, was only included as part of Region I on 1972 during the time of the late President Marcos. The primary language is Ilokano, followed by Pangasinan then Tagalog. There's this stereotype that Ilocanos (i.e. the people in this region) are much more careful about spending money, hard-working and close-knit compared to their brothers in Luzon. They're also noted to be extremely loyal and brave, and are able to withstand hardships for longer periods of time. Perhaps there is some to truth these claims if you put it in a context that considers their land's geography. If one factors the limited area for agriculture in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and La Union, one will see that food production is a real issue. So they are, in a way, forced save as much as they can and find other sources of income to make ends meet. I am intrigued by the lines on their hands, a product of complicated hand weaving to make the world-famous inabel that most people in the city adorn their dining tables with. It is fascinating how they are able to make very simple yet tasty dishes most people have dismissed as peasant food in the past yet a quick survey in the menu of most Manila Pinoy restaurants would indicate that these dishes now command a good cost on the table. I guess I like that their life is a lesson lived and shared to all those who cared to learn --- that even though you cannot change the cards that you are dealt with, if you ever so patiently learn how to play the hand you'll end up with something worth admiring."

How to Get to Ilocos

Manila to ilocos.

Laoag is a 6 to 8-hour ride from Manila while Vigan is 8 to 9 hours. Several bus lines serve the route including Florida Bus Line, Partas Liner, Baliwag Transit and Fariñas Transit. The trip is via North Luzon Expressway and Manila North Road passing through the provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union and fare is around P400 – P700.

By air, Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific fly to Laoag daily from Manila, travel time is an hour. From Laoag International Airport.

Clark to Ilocos

For those coming from Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark Field, Pampanga, ride the shuttle or jeepney going to Dau Integrated Bus Terminal, fare is around P50. In Dau Terminal, look for buses going to Vigan and Laoag.

Baguio to Ilocos

There are numerous departures (buses and vans) daily from Baguio City Bus Terminal to Vigan and Laoag, travel time is not more than four hours, fare ranges from P200 – P300.

The Ilocos region particularly Ilocos Sur & Ilocos Norte is a famous destination to city dwellers in Manila. It comprises various activities like (1) strolling or riding a kalesa to the historical Spanish-era houses in Vigan , (2) enjoying a 4×4 ride in Paoay ‘s Sand Dunes, (3) checking out the humongous windmills in Bangui , or (4) beach vibin’ at Pagudpud ‘s Blue Lagoon!

About Ilocos Sur & Ilocos Norte

Ilocos Sur & Ilocos Norte is more than just historical sites and exhilarating activities. It is also famous for its signature delicacies that tourists are fond of. For example, Vigan empanada and okoy , chichacorn , longganisa , bagnet , and sinanglaw . Truly we cannot deny that fact that Ilocos is famous because of its local delicacies alone.

Moreover, the 2 provinces are located in the Northern most part of Luzon. This is why the weather is unpredictable, the tides can go up and down anytime of the year. However, the best chance of good weather is during summer season in the Philippines.

I visited Ilocos last December 2021 and the weather wasn’t in our favor. And then my family and I visited Ilocos again last May 2022 where the weather is finally on our side! Finally !

Where to Stay?

Assuming that you are following this 3 Days 2 Nights itinerary and that you are a budget traveler. Below are the places I recommend for your stay.

1st Night: Vigan, Ilocos Sur

2nd Night: Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

We stayed at Classique Homestay & Cottages which is a front beach of the famous Blue Lagoon beach. The price of the homestays here are quite expensive considering their facilities. However, this is the most budget place we saw with decent front beach. Air-condition room starts at Php2,500.00 good for 4-6 people. You can find other accommodations around the area but the beach is not that good from my preference.

Day 1: Ilocos Sur

Since we did a road trip and we came from Pangasinan, we left our house at 4am in the morning and arrived to our first destination in Old Quirino Bridge at 8am. We took some photos and headed to our next destination which is the Bantay Bell Tower and Church. There is no entrance fee to the Bantay Bell Tower, but they accept donations.

We checked in to our homestay in Jun And Tell Transient House which is just 2-3 minutes away from Vigan’s Calle Crisologo. After that we decided to rest for a few hours and headed straight to Baluarte Zoo at 3-5pm. We paid Php200.00 each for a shuttle ride going to 5 sites/stops.

At night we went strolling at Vigan’s Calle Crisologo. This is the place where you can buy souvenirs and food delicacies like chichacorn, longganisa iloco, bagnet , etc. You can also ride a kalesa here to appreciate more beauty of the Spanish-era houses. Kalesa ride is Php250.00 for a group of 4 and it will last for 1 hour. Calle Crisologo is the most famous tourist destination when in Ilocos Sur.

Sidetrip: Crisologo Museum

Day 2: Ilocos Norte

The next day, we woke up at 3am and left Vigan at 4am. We headed straight to Paoay Church which is my Dad’s most favorite Church in the country. We went to take a few photos outside the Church then my Mom paid her respects and lighted a candle inside. The travel time from Vigan to Paoay is about 1 hour and a half.

Subsequently, we went to the Malacanang of the North and Sand Dunes which is still within the premises of Paoay. The Malacanang of the North opens at 9am to 4pm everyday and the entrance fee is Php20.00. It is just beside the main highway in between Paoay Sand Dunes and Malacanang of the North.

The price of Sand Dunes varies on your negotiating skills. They gave us a price of Php2,000.00 for a group of 5. But you can still lower it down to Php1,500.00 if you are good with your negotiating skills. Unfortunately for us, we were not able to try it because we have 2 kids with us.

We went straight to Bangui Windmills which is another 1.5 hours from Paoay Sand Dunes. You can actually see the windmills even just along the road of Bangui. However I highly recommend going straight to the beach where you can see the windmills up close. It is so incredible up close!

After Bangui Windmills, we now entered Ilocos Norte and went to our accommodation in Blue Lagoon to check in. We took a rest for a few hours and walked by the shore in the afternoon.

Day 3: Ilocos Norte

We woke up at 5:30am and bathe in the beach for about 2 hours. After that we packed our things and did a sidetrip to Patapat Bridge before going home. We left Blue Lagoon at 9am and arrived in Vigan at 12:30pm just in time for our lunch. My family did one last stroll and rode a kalesa before going home. At 2:30pm we went back to Pangasinan and arrived at 7pm. End of tour .

Take note that the Kalesa Parking Area is just beside Vigan Park, a short walking distance from Calle Crisologo.

Day 1 - Day 1: Arrival + Check-in

Head to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila so you can catch your flight to Laoag City. After arriving at the Laoag International Airport, your driver will bring you to your hotel so you can check in.

After getting settled in your room, you can rest and prepare for your tour the next day, or you can explore the areas near your hotel. If you're up for a hearty meal, you can visit La Preciosa, a local restaurant known for their large servings of Ilocano specialties like pinakbet (mixed vegetable stew cooked in fermented shrimp paste), bagnet (deep fried pork belly), dinardaan (offal in pig's blood), and sarabasab (grilled pork liver).

Day 2 - Day 2: Laoag Tour

The first tour of this trip will allow you to explore Fort Ilocandia Resort, St. William's Cathedral, and Laoag Sinking Bell Tower, all of which are historical places in the city. You will also head to Paoay, where you will stop at Malacañang of the North, a two-story mansion that used to be the holiday house of the Marcos family, and Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church boasts Baroque architecture reinforced to adapt to the Philippines being earthquake-prone. 

Before your tour ends, you'll also visit the Nagbacalan Loom Weavers Cooperative, where you can see and purchase traditional woven products, and the Suba Sand Dunes, where you will enjoy a 4x4 vehicle experience on the sands of Paoay.

Day 3 - Day 3: Pagudpud Tour

Check out of your Laoag City hotel and head to Pagudpud for your tour. Be ready for a day of exploring Pagudpud and nearby municipalities as you will visit the Pasuquin salt makers to see how salt is harvested from the seawater and the Bangui Windfarm to appreciate how renewable energy is harvested in Ilocos Norte. 

You will also visit stunning tourist attractions like the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, the Kapurpurwawan Rock Formation, and the Patapat Viaduct. Make sure to have your cameras ready, as you'll want to snap some photos to commemorate your visit.

At the end of the tour, your driver will drop you off at your hotel in Pagudpud so you can rest and recharge.

Day 4 - Day 4: Free and Easy + Optional Add-on Adams Tour

Enjoy your free day in Pagudpud on your own. If you are up for an adventure, you can visit natural tourist attractions like the beautiful Blue Lagoon Beach, the picturesque Saud Beach, the enchanting Kabigan Falls, or the relaxing Agua Grande.

You also have the option to book an add-on tour to the municipality of Adams. If you book this tour, you'll enjoy visiting the Inuwayan Winery and the Inuwayan Farm, where you can try farm-to-table cuisine and local wine.

Day 5 - Day 5: Check-in at Vigan + Free and Easy

Check out of your hotel in Pagudpud and make your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vigan City. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day on your own.

If you still have the energy to explore, you can visit tourist spots like Plaza Salcedo, where you can enjoy a dazzling fountain show at night, or Baluarte Zoo, where you can see animals like lions, tigers, ostriches, and kangaroos. 

You may also sample the local cuisine, including Ilocos empanada and pinakbet, by visiting popular restaurants like Irene's Empanada and Café Leona.

Day 6 - Day 6: Vigan Tour

Vigan is rich in history and culture, and you'll see that firsthand when you go on this city tour. You will visit the Vigan National Museum, which is also known as the Padre Burgos House, as it is the birthplace and ancestral home of priest patriot Father Jose Burgos. You will see paintings and artifacts on display here. 

You will enjoy a ride in a kalesa, a horse-drawn carriage used during the Spanish colonial period. You'll also take a walking tour of the historic Calle Crisologo, a cobblestone street lined with houses dating back to the Spanish era. 

Foodies will also enjoy this tour, as an empanada- and okoy-making demonstration at Plaza Burgos is also part of the itinerary.

Day 7 - Day 7: Departure and Check-out

Enjoy the free breakfast at the hotel. If you still want to explore, you can visit other tourist attractions like the Crisologo Museum or the Syquia Mansion on your own, or try more delicacies at a local restaurant like Cafe Uno. Just remember to return to the hotel in time for checkout.

Afterward, wait for your transfer to pick you up so you can catch your return flight to Manila at the Laoag International Airport.

Peak Season Bookings - All bookings passing through December 24 and 31 are required to avail of the mandatory Christmas and New Year's Eve Dinner. Prepayment is required and can be paid in advance through Guide to the Philippines or direct to the hotel on the day of check-in.
