Afficher moins

Pic Carlit

Pic Carlit is the highest mountain in the Pyrenees Orientals. Situated in the eastern part of the French Pyrenees approximately 12km from the border of Andorra. Pic Carlit is a good hike from either chalet refuge des Bouillouses approaching from the southeast or Porte Puymorens approaching from the west. The area enjoys brilliant sunshine for most of the year, so pack plenty of sun cream. The lakes of Carlit are arguably one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of the Pyrenees.

  • Getting There

Pic Carlit has 2 main hiking routes, Font Romeu / chalet Bouillouses or Porte Puymorens. Font Romeu Font Romeu can be accessed from Perpignan and then a train to Villefranche, where you will change to a smaller sight-seeing train that can take you directly to Font Romeu or from Toulouse and catch a train to La Tour Da Carol, and then the sight-seeing train to Font Romeu. Alternate to a train, the N116 road leads to Font Romeu from Villefranche. It is possible to hike Pic Carlit from Font Romeu, but it is approximately a 15km hike each way. To make the hike more pleasurable, a stop overnight at the Chalet Refuge de Bouillouses can be taken which lies 8km from Pic Carlit. The hike to Carlit from chalet refuge des Bouillouses, goes through the lakes of Carlit, one of the most picturesque parts of the Pyrenees.

Chalet refuge des Bouillouses

Porte Puymorens Porte Puymorens can be visited from Toulouse by catching a train to La Tour Da Carol and then a short journey via either train or coach to Porte Puymorens. The hike from Porte Puymorens approaches Carlit from the west and takes in part of the GR7 route to Estany de Lanos before heading southwest to the summit of Pic Carlit. This hike is approximately 10km each way.

Porte Puymorens

The summit of Pic Carlit is split into 2 sections and the routes from either direction lead to the intersection of the 2 summits. To the North is the slightly lower summit marked with an iron cross. To the South lies the main summit marked with another cross, this time adorned with a red tin.

Pyrenees Orientals

The views from the summit are breathtaking as Carlit towers above neighboring peaks and affords excellent views across its many lakes.

Hi ! Perhaps you could attach to it pictures from others about Pic Carlit. User Andy_Hornung has for example a lot of photos of this mountain. Great page otherwise, but perhaps I already told it ! :)

On l’aura.

Hiking and Backpacking

Challenging hike to the Peak Carlit in Pyrenees-Orientales, France | Bouillouses Natural Site

It was the second day of our 2 day hike to the Peak Carlit. That day we hiked 18 kms through the beautiful lakes at the Bouillouses Natural Site and ascended to the Pic Carlit (2921m).

That night we slept really well, it was very quiet and calm with no people around us and the temperature was very comfortable, not too cold but very humid.

So we got ready quickly, ate our breakfast and started our 18kms hike for the day.

We wanted to leave our backpacks somewhere in the forest so that we can hike as lightweight as possible. We had a very good previous experience with Puigmal when we were glad we did it as it would have been impossible to get down from the peak. So we tried our luck at the hotel situated right at the lake Bouillouses and they let us leave our backpacks in their living room with no problem. One smaller backpack stayed with us for some food and water carrying.

The trail started quite challenging with the huge rocks on the way to climb but then got easier going through the forest and lots of lakes.

There were lots of people on the trail probably because it was weekend so we couldn’t rush through them. But we needed to move moderately fast cause we saw some big clouds coming out and we didn’t want them to block the views on the top.

The area we were passing by was extremely beautiful untouched places with lots of trails to take and secluded corners to explore. The lake views were so surreal with the perfect reflections of the mountain range in the calm waters and different unique flowers around. The rock formations were also very impressive with lots of shapes and forms. We wished we had more time to explore this area taking photos and it deserves to do the separate hike.

tour pic carlit

We saw the peak Carlit from far in all its glory and as always doubt our abilities to get there. But it already happened to us before and we knew that by doing one step a time we are going to make it.

So the half way to the peak was going on relatively flat paths and had little uphills and downhills. And then we saw the sign telling that from this point the trail is starting to be very hard and it is only recommended for expert hikers. We never saw this type of signs before so it was a bit scary.

tour pic carlit

So the trail surely became a constant uphill with more and more little falling rocks as normal for any peak in the area. We met several little waterfalls with the frozen water and there was the snow in the mountain comb that was melting down slowly but was still saved in the middle of the hot summer. That was incredible to see.

tour pic carlit

We started to see some impressive views from above over all the lakes and mountain ranges.

tour pic carlit

But at one point we seemed to lose our track that we didn’t realize at first as there were so many different routes and crossroads and also we followed the people that is not always a great decision.

And so we had to make our way through some animal paths and climb several rock formations that we did for the first time in our lives and were really glad that we left our heavy weight down. Also we regretted not having any gloves for the hands to protect it from scratching.

But this experience of losing our way and climbing the rocks made this hike even more memorable and when we reached the top we felt like we overcame so much, including our fears.

So the amount of reward and happiness at the top was hard to describe and express in words. The views were unbelievable and as the peak was very steep from all sides and it is the highest in the area we really got to experience the feeling of being on top of the world and above everything.

The clouds were really close to our heads and all of a sudden we heard a thunder and the sound was so different from what we are used to being lower. It was the scariest thing ever but at the same time the most authentic. It was a manifestation of nature in all its power.

tour pic carlit

So sadly not having enough time to contemplate all this beauty we had to start our way down. The downhill wasn’t easier than the uphill without using the hands it was absolutely impossible to step – this steep was the trail.

And we were just in time down at the lake before the clouds completely covered the peak and it started to rain. We waited for some time for the rain to calm down and then moving slowly because it was all slippery we went down to the hotel where we left our backpacks.

For us it was for sure one of the hardest trails we’ve done so far but also the most rewarding. It took us in total 6 hours to do both ways. It is a must hike for everyone who is in the area and the lake Bouillouses natural site is very well worth to explore too. We wouldn’t recommend going with heavy weight and the trekking poles are also not very useful sometimes. Wear some good trekking shoes and use some gloves for the hands. Take the right side of the mountain when it gets confusing and you will be on the right track. In the summer months to the Bouillouses area you can get by bus as well, taking the first one in Mont-Louis and then changing to the other one at Pla de Barres campsite.

Pyrenees High Route (HRP) – A Microstate And A Sunrise Summit (D35-39)

Day 35 – port de rat to cabana pleta serrera, 8.2 miles; 3,664ft ascent.

I woke to an orange light filling the small shelter I slept in.  Stepping out I found myself sill in the clouds, but they were breaking up as the sun rose above the horizon just obscured by the final few hundred feet to the pass.  As more and more blue was filling the sky I decided it was time, á bientôt France – see ya again soon.

tour pic carlit

I climbed to the small gap in the jagged ridge, The Rats Pass and got my first full view of Andorra, a tiny soverign microstate tucked into the High Pyrenees.  From wikipedia-

Believed to have been created by Charlemagne, Andorra was ruled by the count of Urgell until 988, when it was transferred to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Urgell. The present principality was formed by a charter in 1278.  Andorra is the sixth-smallest state in Europe, with an area of 468 square kilometres (181 sq mi) and a population of approximately 79,034.

The view to the East and South was directly into another ski area that is a competition site for the Freeride World Tour, Ordino-Arcalis.  A nice, long pause on the pass, then down along the Western side of the slopes and past a couple calm lakes was a very pleasant way to start the morning.

tour pic carlit

The trail led to a small hamlet called El Serrat where I was able to catch a bus for €.40 down deep into the valleys where the slightly larger towns are for some much needed town food and a resupply.  After topping off my tummy with a pint of ice cream it was time to head back up.

A little way up a dirt road from El Serrat was a manned chalet, the Refugi Borda de Sorteny.  It was very busy, when I tried to ask the host a logistical question and he understandably prioritized the paying customers rather than talk to me I took my leave and headed higher.

After a long meadow and a steep short climb along a stream the trail led into another small plateau where there was a small shepherd’s cabin occupied by a friendly young couple from Scotland.  They were ok with me setting up my tent on the leeward side of the cabin out of the steady wind, so we chatted as they got small cooking fire going and the sunset started glowing.

Day 36 – Cabana Pleta de Serrera to Abri Pedourres

12.8 miles; 5,635ft ascent.

I got an early start to approach the pass to the East in the morning shade.  A good thing too because the environment turned mostly alpine with very little tree cover and after the Coll de Meners the trail stayed close to a high contour for most of the rest of the morning.

tour pic carlit

After cresting the pass the trail led down past a very well built stone emergency shelter, then a couple small lakes, then up a stream past pristine waterfalls to the very nice Refuge de Coms de Jan.  I paused for a while to eat second breakfast and do a little washing in the outflow of the small lake below.

Onward the path undullated over short steep false passes and along contours along the curved hillside.  Another refuge, the Refugi de Cabana Sorda, was timed perfectly for a lunch spot.  The view was a wide panorama of the valleys and surrounding peaks of Andorra.  Along past another stream cut valley and up a short climb was yet another refuge, the Refugi de Juclar.

tour pic carlit

At this point it was hot and time for a midafternoon siesta.  This refuge felt like a special spot- good music, good vibes, Tibetian prayer flags fluttering, and a beautiful setting.  I had a short power nap in the shade, then enjoyed a couple glasses of good wine and an incredibly rich vegan brownie before heading out into the cooling afternoon air.

tour pic carlit

The trail led through boulder fields, first along a reservoir then a small lake just above it before climbing steeply for a while to the Collada de Juclar, the pass that was my exit from Andorra and rentry to France.  It was powerfully stunning on this pass with jagged neigboring ridges splitting in several directions, views on either side of lake-dotted valleys, all lit by the warm light of the late afternoon sun.

tour pic carlit

I took a long pause but because I had neglected bringing enough water to high camp I had to descend.  The first couple of lakes I passed had people camping on the good flat areas beside them, so continuing around the valley I found a short ridge between two lakes with perfect flat areas and large boulders to block the breeze.  The sunset grew very colorful as a thin mist formed and shapped into small clouds.

Day 37 – Abri Pedourres to Pic Carlit

14.7 miles; 4,260ft ascent.

I had intended this to be a short day down to l’Hospitalet Près l’Andorre then a town day for laundry and blog writing, but it wasn’t meant to be.  I got into the small town a bit too early and didn’t get the ‘ slow down and stay a while ‘ feeling- wifi wasnt easy to find, there was a busy noisy road passing by, and eating/resupply options were limited to one cafe/tiny market and an expensive hotel restaurant.

So I had some coffee and filled my food bag with what I could find then headed back out.  From here to the end of the trail the HRP would mostly overlap with the GR10.  Out of town the trail climbed gradually for 5+ miles along an mine cart track/aquaduct/logging road/who knows what.  After turning into a valley and climbing more steeply for a while the trail eventaully leveled out near a large lake with the Refuge des Besines perched on the hillside above it.

tour pic carlit

I had a couple glasses of sweet red wine, now almost routine during the mid afternoon siesta, then when a huge group of Spanish hikers showed up shouldered my sack and headed out and up another pass (Coll de la Coume DAngelo).  At the first waterpoint on the downhill side I met a German HRP hiker going the opposite way who warned me that Pic Carlit is very steep on loose sand and scree and it sees a lot of people during the day so be ready to wait for bottlenecked crowds.

Fair warning, so I decided to make a long evening and get as close to the mountain as I could in an effort to beat most of the masses with an early start.  It had been a long, hot day so the final couple thousand feet up werent easy and slowed me down considerably, but I reached the small alpine lakes at the base of the imposing peak just in time to watch as the final daylight climbed the switchbacks I would follow early the next morning.

tour pic carlit

Day 38 – Pic Carlit to Bolquere

13 miles; 3,126ft ascent.

I set my alarm for 3.45 so that I could be on the move by 4.30.  Yup, it was to be a sunrise summit mostly or entirely done in darkness led only by the light of my headlamp.  Im not so sure it helped much to not be able to see the high consequence angle that grandually got higher and higher, but it did help maintain consentrated focus.  Even with that I did miss a switchback which quickly led to cliffed out scree danger and a sketchy descent that hald my palms practically dripping sweat when I stabilized back on the right path.

tour pic carlit

I got to the top just as the first light was coming to the far distant horizon.  As the light got stronger I realized that I was looking out over The Mediterranean!  What a thrilling feeling to see the distant water, my destination, after crossing such incredible and demanding terrain!  I stayed for a while, joined only by a couple other small groups that came up from the other side, until the orange alpine glow turned to gold then rose to fill the lake filled valley below.

A steep descent led to the bowl below and an area of crisscrossing trails connecting the many little lakes.  There were a lot of people in this area, clearly a popular high country destination.  After a long lunch pause at one of the cabins beside a lake I followed a dirt road across a small ski area and through a pine forest down to the wide valley below and the town of Bolquere.  Once again I had timed my resupply poorly, it was Sunday so everything is closed, so I spent the afternoon wandering the area looking (unsuccessfully) for wifi to write and ending up in a little camp area next to the church in the center of town.

tour pic carlit

Day 39 – Bolquere to Pla de la Fonts

6.4 miles, 2,119ft ascent.

This day was a little confusing.  I was thinking it would be fun to go to Carcassonne (a castle some ways to the North) for Bastille Day, a national holiday that involves big firework shows.  So I set out to investigate transportation (a village a few K away had a train station) and lodging.  First I had to find wifi and passed through 3 small villages with no open restaurant or bar before finally finding one near the train station.

tour pic carlit

I realized that I was an extra day away from the holiday which would mean an extra day of town expenses so after mulling it over while munching on a menu de jour lunch I decided it was more prudent to just stay on trail.  I backtracked up the valley, past vast meadows and a cuddle puddle, before rejoining the HRP on the road to Eyne.  On the other side of this little town the trail became single track and led peacefully into a Nature Reserve and up along a stream through a cool forest to the plateaus in the narrowing valley up high.

tour pic carlit

On one of these small plateaus I found an idyllic site near the stream, with a perfect view down the valley to Pic Carlit on the distant horizon.  I enjoyed another fine sunset and a calm, quiet evening of solitude, distant cowbells and the burbling stream being the reminders of a timeless presence.

Taylor Swift Displays Friendship Bracelets Received from Fans on Eras Tour at Country Music Hall of Fame

Instruments and outfits from the "Fortnight" singer's career are also on display at the Nashville museum's Taylor Swift Education Center

Where are all the friendship bracelets Taylor Swift has received from fans throughout the Eras Tour?

In conjunction with the release of Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department , on April 19, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville began displaying a new artwork in its Taylor Swift Education Center featuring many of the bracelets fans have given the pop superstar.

The new artwork commemorates the 2023 leg of Eras Tour shows in North America, featuring unique posters labeled with specific dates and cities as well as what appears to be hundreds of friendship bracelets gifted to Swift, 34, by concertgoers, according to a press release.

Amanda Edwards/Getty

Several other new artifacts have been added to the Taylor Swift Education Center around the release of TTPD , including a custom Taylor PSGA Koa guitar featuring her name engraved into the fingerboard that was played by the "Karma" singer during The Red Tour.

Also on display is the Deering Boston B6 six-string acoustic-electric banjo played by Swift for her performance of "Mean" on the 2012 Grammy Awards — where the song won both best country solo performance and best country song. She even decorated the instrument by hand with "13" on the banjo head as well as lyrics from "Mean" and doodles of clouds and stars.

Swifties will also be able to view the "Fortnight" musician's outfit from both the 2006 ACM Awards and CMA Music Festival: a sequined BCBG Max Azria silk handkerchief dress adorned and BCBGGirls decoratively-stitched metallic bronze boots.

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

The Eras Tour kicked off in March 2023 and marked Swift's first tour since releasing the albums Lover , Folklore , Evermore and Midnights. Many fans took it upon themselves to create beaded bracelets utilizing phrases or titles from her music, inspired by a lyric from "You're On Your Own, Kid," where she sings, "Everything you lose is a step you take / So make the friendship bracelets / Take the moment and taste it / You've got no reason to be afraid."

Friendship bracelets have since become something of a phenomenon at Swift's concerts. Even celebrities have joined in on the fun , with Lupita Nyong'o , Sarah Paulson , Kumail Nanjiani , Mindy Kaling , Simu Liu, Joe Locke, Selena Gomez , Mariska Hargitay ,  Savannah Guthrie , Halsey , Lance Bass , Flavor Flav and more sharing photos from the Eras Tour after receiving bracelets.

Before Swift officially entered a relationship with Travis Kelce, the NFL star was already in the know regarding the friendship bracelet trend — and attempted to use one to make a move on her .

"If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it," said Kelce on a July 2023 episode of his New Heights podcast, noting that he wasn't ultimately able to meet her and give the gift. (Luckily for him, they connected through other avenues and have remained together since going public in September 2023 .)

Madonna Talks Life on Tour With Her Kids: “Nothing Brings Me More Happiness”

Madonna and three children.

Madonna has been clear from the beginning that The Celebration Tour is no mere “greatest hits” circuit. It’s more like an artist’s MoMA retrospective blown up into an arena tour showcasing her singular contributions to the culture. It’s also the Queen of Pop’s most deeply personal tour yet, paying tribute to her influences, mentors, parents, and the friends and collaborators she’s lost. Nowhere is that personal touch more apparent than the inclusion of four of her children in the show. Across 78 performances so far, Madonna has worked double-duty as mom with son David and daughters Mercy, Stella, and Estere along for the ride—each one getting their own moment on stage. Mercy accompanies her mother on piano during “Bad Girl,” while David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” (which, apparently, required the young musician to work up a bit of confidence to do). Twins Stella and Estere meanwhile, show off their dance skills during “Don’t Tell Me” and a segment dedicated to ballroom.

Ahead of her final arena dates in Mexico and a historic (potentially record-breaking) free show in Rio de Janeiro, Madonna sat down to answer questions over e-mail about life on the road with her children.

Rocco performed on stage during MDNA , and Lola worked in the wardrobe department on that same tour. Your children always seem to be involved in some capacity with your work. How does that feel as a mother?

I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance, and art. Starting from the top with Lola , who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and and a rhythmic gymnast, switching to musical theater and contemporary dance. Now she is a unique singer and song writer in her own right. When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together. It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.  Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.

It seems like your children have been honing their talents for years. How important is it for you as a mother to make sure they take their art seriously?

Because The Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show. As they all dance, and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years.  David has played guitar since he was a child.  Mercy has played piano since she was eight and has been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.  There is always an endless parade of music and dance teachers coming and going in our house. And then we add to that Djing as Estere showed a keen interest in learning. She started taking DJ lessons and took it very seriously.

Each of the children has their own moment in the show. Mercy James playing piano during “Bad Girl” was a highlight. Any back story on how that all came together?

I saw a strange poetic juxtaposition of hedonism, erotic exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life.  Singing Bad Girl was kind of a confession, not an apology, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.

Stella and Mercy.

Stella performs in “Don’t Tell Me,” which is a big number during the show. How was she with learning the choreography?

Stella, who I would say is my shyest child, comes alive on stage, and I love having her as my little cowgirl. But she happens to be an incredible fine artist, and I’m hoping that she follows in the footsteps of Rocco who after being a B-boy, skater, and graffiti artist has really come into his own as an incredible painter.

David during the show’s finale.

David singing a verse during “Mother and Father” was fantastic. Has he expressed any interest in following in your footsteps with a musical career? He had originally only played guitar at the beginning of the tour. Did it take some convincing to get him to sing?

Mother and Father is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory. He has always wanted to sing and play guitar.  He loves being on stage. This is nothing new. I love that we both get to sing to our mothers. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.

Estere

Estere showing off her moves.

Estere

Estere, backstage in a “Britney Spears” t-shirt.

How did Estere get so into ballroom? Does she have any vogue mentors (aside from you)?

While Estere was learning how to DJ she became interested in ballroom competitions and just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler.  She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals in another room, and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability.  So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.

Because this tour is a celebration of your entire career, did you kids learn or realize anything new about you?

I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them.  And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.

The tour just wrapped up its U.S. dates. With five shows in Mexico City coming up and the huge free concert in Rio, what’s going through your mind right now?

This show was created for an indoor arena. Transforming and adapting it to perform outdoors on the beach, with no roof in Rio is going to be quite an undertaking and full of surprises. God willing, we will pull it off, and it will be an experience they will never forget.

On a hulking gray building on a wide boulevard once bisected by the Berlin Wall, a silver call button grants access to an expansive, shadowy, unfurnished foyer. Ascend a winding set of stairs and open the door at the top, and you’ll find the office of the CEO: South Korea-born Peggy Gou , who has swiftly become the world’s most in-demand female DJ-producer working in dance music today.

Trending on billboard.

A Korean woman in a scene dominated by white men, Gou, 32, has orchestrated her own dizzying rise, immersing herself in Berlin’s electronic scene upon moving here 10 years ago, then ascending to white-hot producer/fashion tastemaker thanks to last summer’s viral single, and her first Billboard chart hit, “It Goes Like (Nanana).” This new ubiquity — ever-higher billing at the world’s major music festivals, a German Vogue cover, a 2024 BRIT Award nomination for international song of the year — has neatly teed up Gou’s debut album, I Hear You , coming June 7 through eminent indie label XL Recordings.

“I remember meeting managers who told me, ‘I can make your life easier,’ ” Gou recalls. “I was like, ‘How? Tell me.’ Even if you take care of all these emails, you still have to come back to me because no one can make decisions for me. Every decision has to come from me.”

These decisions have produced an expansive business that includes heavy touring; A-list brand deals; her label, Gudu Records; and a merchandise line, Peggy Goods. With strong fan bases across continents, Gou will next be raising her profile even more in the United States ahead of and beyond I Hear You ’s release.

“Because Peggy has such an incredible touring footprint globally,” XL Recordings head of U.S. campaigns Laura Lyons says, “in the U.S., we’re in a position where, because we haven’t historically had her in the market as much, we need to build on the moments when she’s here in person and also translate the excitement of an international, globe-trotting DJ to the local market.”

One week and 6,000 miles later, the odds will look clearly in Gou’s favor.

The first time Gou played Coachella, in 2018, the line to get into her show wrapped around the at-capacity Yuma Tent where she was performing at three in the afternoon. “Even one person not being able to see my set, that upsets me,” she says. “So I was like, ‘Maybe next time, I play a bigger stage.’ ”

On the first night of the 2024 festival, that “maybe” has become a firm “for sure.” Gou presides over the Sahara Tent — Coachella’s biggest and most established dance music mecca — from atop a towering stage as an emoji version of herself smiles at the audience from massive LED screens. With the newly expanded Sahara Tent stretching 320 feet, not including spillover — almost a football field long — it’s likely Gou’s crowd is the largest ever assembled to see a female producer in Coachella history. (After the set, she shares Instagram Stories of herself backstage hanging with J Balvin, getting chummy with Will Smith and then getting a burger from an In-N-Out somewhere in the Coachella Valley.)

That might be anathema to some purists, particularly those steeped in the techno-as-religion culture of Berlin. But Gou has been able to maintain her underground cred even while blowing up. The early-April screening of the music video for I Hear You ’s third single, “1+1=11,” happened at a smoky Berlin club where the techno went until 3 a.m. on a Wednesday, and her friend group includes revered producers like Four Tet and Floating Points, whom she was recently hanging with in Mexico City. “I love those guys,” she says. “So nerdy. Like, ‘Guys, stop talking about how fat your drum is.’ ”

I suggest to Gou that her underground pedigree, paired with a forthcoming debut album that’s refreshingly accessible, might make her uniquely well-suited for the United States, where the so-called “underground” styles of house and techno have become the scene’s prevailing commercial forces in the live space. For her, that idea is beside the point. “Some people are like, ‘She’s really underground,’ or ‘She’s commercial,’ ” Gou says. “I don’t care. I’m just going to keep doing my thing and you can say what you want.”

Growing up in South Korea’s third-most populous city, Incheon — where she was born Kim Min-ji — Gou listened to “sh-t,” “good music” and “everything.” She lived in the shadow of her older brother, who’s “like super genius, one of the crazy Mensa IQ people.” Meanwhile, “Study wasn’t my thing. I was kind of rebel. So if you tell me to stay here, I will not stay there. If you tell me to go, I will stay. I didn’t like people telling me what to do even from when I was a kid.”

By 2016, she was making her own music, and by 2018, revered dance label Ninja Tune was releasing it. She started her own Gudu Records in 2019; that same year, she released the groovy house track “Starry Night,” which featured her singing in Korean and became a dance world hit.

All the while, she was touring. As her own manager, “I was the only person who was pushing me,” she says. “I didn’t need to be there. I didn’t have to do that. I think I got hyped. I got too excited about the shows and getting many shows.” In 2019, she played in 25 countries, including some, like Lebanon, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, that are far from the well-trod dance world circuit.

“Imagine a bullet train,” Gou says, speaking rapidly. “This was me in 2019. When it stopped, it didn’t stop slowly; it had to stop super fast.”

When the pandemic started, she returned to South Korea and spent three months at home — the longest amount of time she had been with her family since she was 14. She recharged even as life in South Korea — which introduced what many considered one of the world’s best COVID-19 control programs — continued without large-scale lockdowns. (“Asian culture is different because when you have a flu, you wear a mask,” she says, “so it was not that difficult for Asian people to keep the rules.”)

She kept working upon her return to Berlin in mid-2020, finding that the ’90s dance music she was listening to during the pandemic had “changed my taste.” While she had been making her debut album for a while, she decided to make ’90s dance the center of the project, evident in the interplay of the bass and chimes on a track like “Lobster Telephone,” which sounds like it’s sprinkled with powdered sugar. The “It Goes Like (Nanana)” bassline is pure Jock Jams — the 1995 compilation that introduced a generation of suburban adolescents to dance music — and has helped the song aggregate 72.2 million on-demand official U.S. streams and 565.3 million on-demand official global streams to date, according to Luminate. Altogether, the album, on which she sings in both Korean and English, is dance music distilled down to its most polished essentials — and you don’t have to be a hardcore fan of the genre to get into it.

The sonic opposite of EDM maximalism, I Hear You may very well represent the future of main-stage electronic music. “In my career, I never once thought, ‘I’m on the next level now,’ ” she says. “Only when ‘Nanana’ happened did I realize that people were recognizing my song before my face. That’s when I really realized, ‘F–k, this is different.’ ”

“For [“It Goes Like”] to become this global song of the summer and be Peggy’s first song to hit No. 1 on the U.S. dance radio charts was just such a fantastic tone-setter for this album,” Lyons adds, “and for what we believe she’s capable of achieving in the U.S.”

If you’re Peggy Gou, it’s entirely possible that the person seated across from you at Thanksgiving dinner may turn out to be Lenny Kravitz — which was exactly the case when, in 2022, she went to a friend’s house in Miami for the holiday.

“He had absolutely no idea who I was,” Gou recalls. “The only thing I could mention was that I did [two songs] for [his daughter] Zoë’s movie [ The Batman ].” It was a solid in. The pair talked over turkey, and her friend told Kravitz to check out Gou’s music. Not long after, Kravitz asked if she wanted to collaborate.

She sent Kravitz a track — a song that she had struggled to find a singer for after artists including The Weeknd and Giveon turned it down — and heard nothing back. “So I decided to go to the Bahamas,” where Kravitz lives, she says. “My friend was like, ‘You want to have Lenny Kravitz on your album? F–king book your flight, go there and get it.’ ” There was, Gou says, some “opinion clash” during the recording process, as “I’m a perfectionist and he’s perfectionist.” She adds with a smile, however, that Kravitz did ultimately tell her she was right about a part of the song they had disagreed on. Their slinky “I Believe in Love Again,” the second I Hear You single, arrived in November.

Gou’s single-minded professional chess moves manifested her deal with XL in the first place, years after she reached out to the label about an internship back when she was a student in London. XL didn’t respond then, but it got in touch after the success of her 2018 single “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane).” “I did make a joke,” she says of her first meeting with XL, “like, ‘Check your inbox.’ ”

XL also most likely enjoys working with a talent who’s changing the face of electronic music simply by being one of the most popular artists making it. “As incredible as it is to see a Korean woman occupy this space in dance music culture,” says Lyons, who herself is Asian American, “it’s not the reason why I’m excited by her.”

While a new level of streaming and chart success would be a nice outcome for I Hear You , to Gou, they’re “very 1D hopes.” She’ll consider the album a success if people listen to it and — she puts a hand over her heart — “get a feeling.”

The feelings are clearly being felt at Coachella, where people in the crowd — many of them, like Gou, also wearing sunglasses though the sun set long ago — are flailing around, arms in the air and dreamy smiles on their faces. A crew of six dancers pop and lock, vogue and gyrate onstage. Gou will take this show on the road this summer for a run that includes European festivals like Primavera Sound, Glastonbury and Creamfields. In August, she’s hosting and headlining her own one-day mini-fest at London’s Gunnersbury Park; the show’s 8,000 tickets sold out within days of going on sale.

Unlike her early years of touring alone, Gou now travels with her tour manager and a road assistant or two. She “doesn’t always fly private,” but says the primary appeal of a private jet is a preference for efficiency that she says is part of her heritage: “I’m someone who [doesn’t] like wasting my time. I’m very efficient. I think that’s from Korean culture. Efficiencies are very important in Korea.”

These days, Gou’s team also includes a security detail, as she has experienced stalkers and people “waiting at the hotel or waiting at the airport for 10 hours.” She “can’t go to Italy alone” and brings two security guards to Argentina where the crowd is “quite wild.” She recalls spending the entirety of a commercial flight to Ibiza facing the window after half the plane recognized her while boarding. “I was like, ‘My neck,’ ” she says with a laugh, feigning pain. “It’s nice, but sometimes it gets a lot for me.”

“She can see 100 meters ahead in the airport. She notices the colors of things, remembers what people are wearing and is just super, super sensitive,” her touring manager says, “especially when there’s a lot of people around.”

But her skin has gotten thicker as her career has grown. “In the beginning, I remember [people saying], ‘You will never be bigger than this person. No one’s going to buy your record. No one knows your name.’ I heard these things so many times.”

The criticisms “used to really affect me,” Gou continues. “I used to want to scream, like, ‘That’s not f–king true.’ ” But as time went on, she realized she was the reason her feelings were getting so hurt. “I was not happy,” she says of her pre-pandemic life. “I was so focused and tunnel-visioned. My relationship with boyfriend wasn’t doing well. Friends, workwise — nothing was happy. I learned a lot about myself during the pandemic.” Learning to listen first and react later has been huge for her. It’s why she’s wearing a mirrored headpiece that reflects her ears on her album cover and why she named the project I Hear You .

Dressing in brightly colored, flowing sets and racing gear helped her catch the attention of top fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, with which she has had two partnerships. She was good friends with late DJ-designer Virgil Abloh; after his 2021 death, she posted on Instagram that “I will forever be grateful that in the infancy of my career, Virgil showed support at a time when not many others would.” Her own Peggy Goods line creates custom merch for each of her shows; at the “1+1=11” music video screening party, more than one person wears a bomber jacket with the song’s title embroidered on the back.

Gou documents the fabulousness of it all on her Instagram, which has 4.1 million followers and which — yes — she runs herself. To her, the account is a natural evolution of her old Tumblr, where she would post photos of her outfits, meals and outings. She uses the same approach now on Instagram — except the outfits are by Ferragamo, the meals are on a beach in Ibiza and the outings are playing for tens of thousands of people screaming her name. Her glamorous aesthetic, and the size of her audience, has yielded deals with brands including Don Julio, Coca-Cola and Maybelline.

Like most anyone who has achieved major success and its attendant visibility, people still give Gou sh-t. But in a true boss move, she has come to enjoy it.

“Now when I hear criticism, it means I’m doing super well,” she says. “So go ahead: Say my name.”

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP AUDIO: NFL draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is Detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

A view of the NFL Draft green room is shown, Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Detroit. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

Associated Press writers Corey Williams and Mike Householder contributed to this report.
