Policeman’s Helmet Hike: This 4-hour moderate hike starts at the Gorge Car Park. It’s a 3-mile hike with an elevation of about 1115 feet. As you ascend up the trail, you’ll discover some incredible views and landmarks.

Then there are more moderate walks that can take up to six hours. These walks include a 7-mile hike through the Sigubudu Ridge and Rugged Glen Nature Reserve to enrich this San art site. 

Mont-aux Sources Hike: If you’re looking for a challenge, then take the grueling 5-hour trek up to the highest point in the Drakensberg – The Mont-aux-Sources. This peak rises up to 10,768 feet. 

While it is quite the challenge, once you make it to the top, you’re rewarded with unrivaled views of the whole Drakensberg Mountain range.

• Blindmans Corner Hike: The Blindmans Corner Hike is a challenging 5-hour trail near Okhahlamba. It is a circular route that is quite uphill. It starts at Monk’s Cowl Cap and takes you past Crystal Falls, The Sphinx, the Breakfast Steam, and then up to Blindmans Corner.

From there you’ll get to see other landmarks such as Cathkin Peak, Sterkhorn, and the Champagne Castle. 

• Sterkspruit Falls: Another short and easy hike in this area is the Sterkspruit Falls hike. It starts at Monks Cowl, which then takes you down to the majestic Sterkspruit Falls before returning to the starting point. It takes about 2 hours to complete in total.
• Nandi and Sterkspruit Falls : This hike is a 4-mile circular trail that takes you to both Nandi Falls and Sterkspruit Falls. It starts at the Monk Cowl and takes you past vistas, smaller waterfalls, and pools. 
• Hlatikulu Forest Hike: Another way to reach the Sterkspruit and Nandi Falls is through the Hlatikulu Forest Hike. It takes you down to the Sterkspruit River and passes both fall through the tranquil Hlatikulu Forest. It takes about 4 hours to complete one way. 
• Main Caves Hike: This is a short 1-hour hike from the Giant’s Castle camp. It takes you to a bushmen cave where you can discover rock art and a bushman model scene, highlighting the life of a bushman family. 
• World’s View:  The World’s View hike is a moderate 3-hour hike that crosses the Bannerman Bridge and Sugarloaf Kop. Once you get to the top, it will feel as if you’re on top of the world with matching views to go with it.

It goes without saying that the Drakensberg, famed for its dramatic, majestic mountain range and towering peaks, is one of the best places in Africa – and indeed the world – to enjoy amazing hikes.

Thankfully, there are a multitude of local hikes to enjoy in this beautiful corner of the world.

#6 Brave Dragon Rock Reptile Centre

Found in the heart of Champagne Valley, in the central Berg, this unique reptile- and nature-centre is a fun and fascinating place for most ages to enjoy.

If you love fishing, you are in luck because many of the rivers and dams found in the Drakensberg permit fishing.

One such place is Royal Natal Park, which is situated within uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site.

Here, guests are allowed to fly fish (and only fly fish) – provided they bring their own rods and purchase a fishing permit upon entering the park.

Once you have your permit, you can enjoy incredible fly fishing in one of the most breathtaking parts of the Drakensberg.

#8 Enjoy MTB Fun with Cathkin Trails

For MTB lovers, the Drakensberg is understandably one of the more exciting and beautiful places to ride.

Happily, with Cathkin Trails, a local non-profit organisation who are passionate about developing and maintaining MTB trails, this dream can easily become a reality.

There are some 30 kilometres of trails that have been built to date, with more planned for the future.

Riders can choose between daily, weekly or annual membership fees but they must sign the indemnity form and receive a wristband before they can ride on any of the trails.

Ukhahlamba-drakensberg park: where nature and culture converge.

U U NESCO’s description of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, which encompasses South Africa's highest mountain range, is accurate in every way. This KwaZulu-Natal World Heritage Site, it states, 'has exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts.'  

Located just 2 hours from Durban and 4 from Gauteng, the mountainous national park  includes attractions such as Cathedral Peak, Giant's Castle and Monk's Cowl, to name a few.   

A particularly renowned attraction of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park is the Amphitheatre, a wall of rock 5km in length and 1 000m high. From its domed summit at Mont-aux-Sources spill the spectacular Tugela Falls. Brushed with a dusting of snow in the winter, the 'berg', as the site is affectionately termed by locals, is picture-perfect.  

This is a perfect place to partake in outdoor activities, fuelled by crisp mountain air. Hiking, rock climbing and fly-fishing are popular in the region. There are several game parks in the area where a wide variety of African antelope such as the large eland, can be spotted. The bird life is nothing short of magnificent, with the bearded vulture or lammergeier often circling in the sky above. Flora includes the indigenous protea, rare cycads and ancient tree ferns.  

4 000 years or so ago, these mountains were home to the indigenous San. Though the inhabitants have largely disappeared from the area, they have left their mark in the form of fascinating rock art. Some 30 000 paintings in 600 caves and overhangs have been recorded in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, yet another reason the area has earned World Heritage Site status.

How to get there   

From Durban, take the N3 using Exit 194 to reach the Central and Northern Berg, and Exit 99 for the Southern Berg  

Best time to visit   

The park is a good year-round destination, but particularly beautiful in the autumn (May) and spring (November).  

Things to do  

Hiking is a popular activity, but there are also birdwatching tours, tours to the Drakensberg Boys' Choir School and plenty of companies offering rafting, abseiling and mountaineering options. Your own car  is recommended to travel between the towns, valleys and attractions in the 'Berg.  

What to pack   

Hiking boots, fishing gear, a raincoat in summer and warm clothes in winter, and always take plenty of sunscreen and a hat.  

Where to stay   

Accommodation in the area runs the gamut from luxury hotels and game lodges to guest houses, B&B establishments, self catering facilities, caravan parks and camping sites.

Historical sites worth visiting in the Drakensberg

Nestled in the heart of South Africa, the Drakensberg Mountains stand as a majestic sentinel, guarding the nation’s rich history and natural beauty. This World Heritage Site not only offers breathtaking landscapes but also a glimpse into the past through its historical sites and memorials.

Known as uKhahlamba in the Zulu language, which translates to “Barrier of Spears,” the region is a living museum of South Africa’s past. In addition to Kwa-Zulu Natal battlefields, the Drakensberg is adorned with historical sites that reveal the region’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re fascinated by the tales of indigenous people, the clashes between colonial powers and local communities, or the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the Drakensberg offers a unique opportunity to connect with South Africa’s past.

They serve as reminders of the complex history of South Africa, the wars fought here and the effect they had in shaping the country.

Churchill Capture Site: This historically significant site commemorates the moment when Sir Winston Churchill, the British statesman and future Prime Minister, was captured during the Second Anglo-Boer War. The site, located near Estcourt on the Colenso road, is a popular tourist attraction and historical landmark in the region. Churchill, who was a young war correspondent at the time, was traveling on an armoured train with British troops when it was ambushed by Boer forces and he was taken as a prisoner of war. He was held captive for two months before escaping and making his way back to British lines.

Retief’s Klip: In the Northern Drakensberg, Retief’s Klip or Kerkenberg, is a stunning rock formation named after Piet Retief, a Voortrekker leader who was killed by the Zulus in 1838. After travelling from the Cape Voortrekker leader Piet Retief descended into the valleys of the Drakensberg and entered Natal in search of new lands and grazing for their cattle. While Retief went to meet the Zulu King Dingane to negotiate this, the remaining voortrekkers ascended to reach this area where they rested for a period. The name Kerkenberg means church as the shape of the mountains reminded the travellers of such.

Retief soon returned to tell the travellers the good news that they could settle in the land and he proposed Natal as the final destination of their migration and selected a location for its future capital, later named Pietermaritzburg in his honour. On the following day, Retief’s birthday, his daughter wrote his name in ash on one of the rocks where it can still be seen today. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t end happily, as Retief went on to be murdered by the Zulu King Dingane near Eshowe.

Kaalvoet Vrou: The Barefoot Woman is a bronze statue located close to Retief’s Klip at the top of the Drakensberg just in the Free State. It is located along the route that the Voortrekkers took up the side of the Drakensberg to get away from the British in Natal and commemorates Susanna Catharina Smit, sister of Gerrit Maritz, who is famous for saying that she would rather walk barefoot back across the Drakensberg than again have to live under the yoke of British rule, which they saw as oppressive and discriminatory.

Van Rensburg Kop: On the back road from Estcourt towards Mooi River, this particular site is a personal one for us because if the story that happened here had not unfolded as it did Magda (co-owner of Treks, Trips, ad Trails) would never have been born. This small hill marks the site of a battle that took place between a group of Voortrekkers and a large Zulu force. The Voortrekkers were outnumbered by the Zulus, but they managed to defend themselves by taking up a position on the top of the koppie. The Battle of Van Rensburg Kop was a significant event in the history of South Africa. It was one of the first major victories of the Voortrekkers over the Zulu people, and it helped to secure their position in the Natal region.

Spionkop: Also spelled Spioenkop. This hilltop in South Africa is located reasonably close to the town of Winterton. It is the site of the Battle of Spionkop, which was fought during the Second Boer War on the 24th of January 1900. The battle was a British defeat, but resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. The British forces trench at the summit of Spionkop (now marked by white stones) became the final resting place for many of the soldiers.

The legend goes (dispelled as a myth by some) that General Louis Botha, Winston Churchill and Mahatma Ghandi were all present at the same time on the top of Spionkop after the cessation of the battle and if any one of them had been inadvertently killed, especially Churchill or Ghandi, 20th century history would have been totally different. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, and it is also a place where many South Africans come to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers on both sides.

The Nelson Mandela Capture Site: The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is a historical landmark and museum in South Africa that commemorates the arrest of Nelson Mandela on 5 August 1962. The site is located on the R103 route in the Natal Midlands, approximately five kilometres outside of the town of Howick in KwaZulu-Natal and is a popular stop to visit on your way to the Drakensberg when travelling to or from Durban. Mandela’s arrest marked a significant turning point in the struggle against apartheid, and his subsequent imprisonment and release became iconic symbols of the fight for freedom and equality. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site Visitor Centre features a range of interactive exhibits and a display of historical artefacts and photographs. The most iconic feature however is a sculpture made up of 50 steel columns that reveal Mandela’s face when viewed from a particular angle.

Rock art, baboons and hiking in South Africa's Drakensberg mountains

Ancient rock art, towering waterfalls, and wildlife from baboons to weaver birds are among the wonders that await hikers in the Drakensberg Mountains.

It’s 6am in the morning. I’m crammed into the back of a Toyota, rattling up a truly terrible unsealed road in blanket mist, about to begin one of the greatest walks of my life. The next few hours will also serve up mud, two chain ladders and, at times, a view that extends no further than the end of my arm. But in the Drakensberg mountains, special things lie in wait.

I’ve come on a hiking trip to the largest mountain range in South Africa, which can be found around four hours south of Johannesburg. It’s a grassy massif full of grand, muscular contours, almost 940sq miles of which are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ancient rock art decorates its caves, baboons caper in its valleys and footpaths thread over its buttresses.  

On the afternoon I arrive here from the city, it feels something like deliverance. The foothills are a soft green, their slopes sketched with bracken. A herd of hartebeest appears at the roadside. Sunlight washes down onto villages of thatched rondavels (traditional round huts) and roaming hens. I drive past a ‘chameleon crossing’ sign, then weaver bird nests dangling from an acacia tree. The peaks on the horizon are tall and table-topped.  

When I reach the Cavern Resort & Spa, a hill sanctuary where red-winged starlings swoop past tree ferns and the world’s best-exercised spaniels snooze in reception, Mike Mlangeni talks me through the following day’s trail. Mike is a hiking guide, a proud Zulu, a Liverpool fan and an early riser. “We leave at 4am,” he tells me. “When we get there, we’ll have to take a four-wheel drive transfer to the start. Bad road,” he says, fixing eye contact. “But worth it.”

This is how we come to be juddering up a track before breakfast, watching the dawn fog become thicker. We’re about to begin the Amphitheatre hike, a 7.5-mile circuit that culminates on an outlandishly beautiful escarpment. Or so I’m told. The first hour, in near-zero visibility, is slow going, and it’s not until a semi-view opens up, with rags of cloud settled in the clefts of a mighty mountainscape, that I feel my blood pumping. Then we reach the chain ladders.  

“They’re simple,” says Mike, as we stand under a set of iron rungs disappearing up the rock face. “Just don’t look down.” Minutes later, we’ve negotiated both nerve-wracking ladders — around 78ft and 50ft respectively, although there’s a longer alternative route for those disinclined to climb them — and reached a grassy plateau. A malachite sunbird whizzes past, a blast of colour in the lingering mist. It’s at this point, after some 90 minutes of walking, that the sun breaks through and the scenery hurtles dizzily into focus.  

We’ve reached an altitude of over 2,438m. A river is chuckling away from us across the plateau and, as we keep walking, I see that it’s flowing directly off the cliffside. My pulse quickens. A sign bolted to a rock reads ‘Tugela Falls — The Tallest Waterfall In The World — 983 metres (3,225ft)’. Seconds later, the view from the drop-off opens up and hits me physically: a dreamlike universe of plunging water, basalt precipices and miles-away mountains.  

I walk south, dazed, rambling along the cliff edge and staring out, then turn and do the same heading north. There are butterflies at my feet and gorges in the distance. Somewhere far below, cloud-shadows are patching the valley floor. I can’t take it all in. “See,” says Mike smiling when I rejoin him. “Worth it.”

Two days later, I’m sitting under a sandstone overhang examining 1,000-year-old paintings of hunters and lions. I’ve driven further south in the range to reach the thunderously handsome area around Cathedral Peak Hotel, a resort here since 1939. I had thought, foolishly, that the Amphitheatre’s scenery wouldn’t be topped, but here the peaks are more clustered, more hewn, somehow even more thrilling in scale. Groves of flowering protea trees dot the hills and black cuckoos echo from slope to slope.  

The human figures in the rock paintings, which are thought to have been created using antelope blood, are shown running with spears. “They were done by the San people,” says my guide Zweli Sithole, his sun hat floppy above his scarified cheeks. “They were here before us Zulus, but they’re long gone now.” Zweli is the perfect hiking companion, with a warm patience and a habit of singing his words. “One step at a time,” he chants softly as we make the steep ascent up to a natural arch known as Mushroom Rock. “One step at a time.”

He leads me on a 10.5-mile loop through the empty green hills. Before I set out, the route description had sounded routine, but the reality is anything but. Craggy pinnacles frame the sky while slopes and ridges ripple into the distance. On a far hillside, elands graze in the sunshine. The views seem colossal and in all directions at once: spin on your heel and every way’s a winner. Zweli points out a high mountain pass that leads into Lesotho, then crouches by a stream to show me a crunched pile of crab shell left by an otter. We finish with a swim in the natural pool beneath Doreen Falls.    

We stop so often to just sit and stare that it takes us nearly seven hours to get ourselves back to the resort. My boots are dusty and my calves are sore, but I’m absolutely buzzing for the rest of the day. Drakensberg translates as ‘dragon mountains’, while the Zulu word for the range — uKhahlamba — means ‘barrier of spears’. Never, I’m left thinking, were such dramatic names more warranted.

South Africa's fifth largest reserve, the park is just a four-hour drive north from Johannesburg and also accessible by bush plane.

There are a number of safari lodges inside its fences, ranging from mid-range to ultra luxe, like Jamala Madikwe . There are less than 5,000 wild dogs left in the wild, but Madikwe has a good-sized pack that can often be spotted on wildlife drives.

Surfers flock to Jeffreys Bay between May and September to try to hang 10 at South Africa's most famous break, Supertubes. J-Bay, as the town is often referred to, is one of the top surfing spots in the world and hosts major competitions.

The right-hand point break can run for more than 300 meters during a good swell. It is known not only for its length and fast tubing formation (hence the name) but also for its consistency.
