"The hill of many wonders"

Chitrakoot tourism.

Chitrakoot, a small town situated in the north Vindhyan range, is located over the districts of Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh and Satna in Madhya Pradesh. It holds great importance according to Hindu mythology and the epic Ramayana. Legends have it that Chitrakoot was the place where Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana stayed for eleven and half of their fourteen years of exile making it a reverred site among pilgrims.

According to Ramayana, Chitrakoot was the place where Bharata, brother of Ram came to visit Ram and ask him to come back to Ayodhya and rule the kingdom. It is also believed that the principal gods of Hindus, (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) took incarnations here. This divine city is also known as the 'Hill of many wonders' and it totally justifies the name. Chitrakoot mountain range has numerous places of great religious importance like Bharat Milap Temple, Hanuman Dhara , Janki Kund and much more. It is indeed the gift of nature and the gods. Chitrakoot is also the place where Goswami Tulsidas, author of 'The Ramcharitmanas', spent many years of his life. There are many lively fairs which are organized on different occasions and festivals. Not many know that Chitrakoot is also home to the only university in the world specially made for the differently-abled, Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University.  Thus, Chitrakoot is rightly called the Place of Many Wonders!

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places you should visit. Why? Easy! This National Park has the highest Tiger density and your chances of seeing a tiger are very high. So if seeing these majestic cats in the wild has been on your bucket list, then I highly recommend going to Bandhavgarh National Park.

The core zone of the Tiger Reserve is split up in 3 areas: Tala, Magdhi, and Khitauli, surrounded by a generous buffer zone. I visited the Tala zone and had 3 Tiger sightings on 2 safari drives, and saw a lot of other wildlife as well.

If you are looking for a responsible and eco-friendly safari company, I highly recommend Pugdundee Safaris . I was invited by them to get to know their lodges and safaris and was blown away by the high ethical and environmental protection standards they follow, such as waste reduction, conservation efforts and hiring locals.

They have two properties at Bandhavgarh and both are absolutely amazing. Kings Lodge is a stunning lodge with all the amenities you could wish for, including pool and a spa. The Treehouse Hideaway is something really special: You sleep in a super luxurious tree house and it is definitely a wonderful experience.

Taj-ul-Masjid Mosque Bhopal

by A World To Travel

Among the architectural landmarks of the city of Bhopal , the nerve center of the province of Madhya Pradesh in the heart of India, the Taj-ul-Masjid mosque truly stands out. Not only for its beauty but also for its size because it is said to be the largest in all of India. Its construction was initiated by Shah Jehan Begum (1868-1901), although the works did not finish until 1971. This mosque receives the largest concentration of Muslims in the entire country, the Ijtima. Some sources say that up to 175,000 people fit inside.

If you visit it early and during a weekday, you may be able to admire how it becomes Madrasa or school for young people. Maybe because of this fact, or for any other reason – who knows – women do not have to cover their heads as in any other mosque as a general rule (please bear in mind that this can change at any time and if you are a woman you may have to cover your head in any case). The shoes must be left at the entrance. Do not forget the camera, the reflections from the central pond and the ‘forest of columns’ inside are impressive.

Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park is definitely one of the must-visit Madhya Pradesh Tourist Places. The beautiful Sal tree forests and rolling meadows, as well as the flourishing wildlife at Kanha National Park was the inspiration for Kipling’s Jungle Book. While I didn’t get to see Shere Khan or Bagheera during my safari there, I still saw beautiful landscapes and many, many other stunning animals. From the Barasingha Swamp Deer to Indian Bison, beautiful birds and lovely butterflies, Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh is a paradise for animal and nature lovers.

It gets really hot starting in April, so if you are not used to the heat, I recommend visiting between October and March. The park is closed from July to Mid-October for the monsoon.

As a place to stay, I highly recommend Kanha Earth Lodge – a Pugdundee Safaris Lodge . Their bungalows are as luxurious as villas and the staff is incredibly friendly. Make sure you go on a sundowner up on the little hill behind the lodge – it is an incredible experience.

Chanderi – Madhya Pradesh Tourist Sites

by A Tale of Two Backpackers

Chanderi is a quaint town in the heart of Madhya Pradesh steeped with history and heritage and one of the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places. Set amidst a naturally beautiful landscape surrounded by hills, Chanderi had a prominent place in the history of India.

The town of Chanderi fell on the major trade route of Central India and on the route to Malwa and was always in the eyesight of the earlier rulers. This can be seen from the abundant archaeological structures found in the town. There are forts, mosques, temples, and lakes in this small town.

The Kirti Durg or Chanderi Fort is one of the most striking places in the city and at night the lights of the fort can be seen even from a distance. Other places of interest include the Badal Mahal Darwaza, Raja Rani Mahal, Koshak Mahal, Sehzadi ki Roza, Kati Ghati, Jama Masjid, Jageshwari Temple, Parameshwar Taal and many more. Each of the structure seems to tell the stories of the past.

Tales of the past is strewn all around Chanderi. Chanderi is most famous for the Chanderi sarees, a very fine fabric that is said to have been weaved since the fourteenth century. These fine fabrics were patronized by the Mughals and the royals of the country. The weavers or Bunkaars are still trying to maintain their heritage while weaving and even till date Chanderi sarees are one of the best sarees in the country. Chanderi is a hidden gem in the tourism map of Madhya Pradesh. With so many wonderful historical structures, natural beauty and weaving of the Chanderi fabric, the place is sure to win the heart of its visitors.

Gwalior Fort

by ASocialNomad

Described by Mughal emperor Babur as the Pearl of India’s fortresses, Gwalior Fort is truly magnificent.

Although there’s been a fortification here since 525 A.D., this current fort was built, its thought, in the 8th century. The fort location was selected when, legend says, a local chief received waters which healed leprosy – he then founded Gwalior, which stands for “saint” in Hindi”.

There are two entrances to the fort, the west gate, which you can take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to, or the east gate, which you can approach only on foot. I seriously recommend the short walk of around 15 minutes if you don’t stop and admire the view up from the Gwalior Gate through the East Gate. This lets you appreciate the truly magnificent location and display the fort puts on. En route you’ll pass 5 gates (or their remains) and also a memorial to the first recorded zero as it was Indian mathematicians who first invented the circle that we know as zero.

Once at the top, the fort covers an area that is 3km long and there are various temples and areas to visit. Go early to avoid the heat, take a break and enjoy the peaceful surrounds. Walk down, past the superb Jain carvings after the Urvai or west gate and then take an autorickshaw back to town. This is a truly magnificent fort and well worth the visit.

Pench National Park

by Karla Around The World

Pench National Park offers a variety of activities that is not just limited to wildlife and jeep safari. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Pench Tree Lodge where you can do a Nature Walk within the property, bush dinner, picnic, organic farm dinner, cycle and more. The property itself feels like you are in the middle of nowhere and all the greenery surrounding it makes you feel like you are in Paradise.

If you had had enough of wildlife excursions, you can also go for the village experience and the market where you can interact with the locals. I really loved my visit to the Village. We observed how their daily life is like out there and interacted with them. It was sad that I couldn’t speak their language and that the guide had to translate everything but despite that we had meaningful interactions with them as they showed us their home, their lifestyle and more.

Bhimbetka Rock Shelters UNESCO World Heritage Site

This UNESCO Heritage Site features prehistoric rock paintings that are over 30,000 years old, but first human settlement in this area dates back more than 100,000 years. The complex is evidence of the oldest human settlement in India. Due to its historic significance, it became a UNESCO Site in 2003.

The various rock paintings from the different time period show animals and people, dancing and hunting scenes and is one of the largest prehistoric complexes in the world.

The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are about 1 hour from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

by Nomadic Chicca

Orchha is one of those Madhya Pradesh tourist places where I wish I could stay longer. As soon as I arrived the calm and relaxed vibe of this town got me and I wanted to explore more. Orchha means “hidden” and as its name, is still one of those places where tourism has not arrived in masses yet. Being the testimony of the medieval times when the monuments and palaces where built when Orchha was the capital of the Bundelkhand Empire, being in Orchha is like traveling back in time.

It will take just catching one sunset at the gorgeous Jehangir Mahal palace to grab your heart and a walk near the river Betwa, where in summer you can do great rafting, or grabbing a tea in one of the palace hotels to feel the beauty and magic of this place. The best time to visit Orchha is from October to March, when you find the best temperatures and weather, avoiding the months of the Monsoon or the summer when temperatures can rise up to 50ºC.

Satpura National Park

by My Adventures Across The World

There is no doubt that going to Satpura National Park is one of the best things to do in Madhya Pradesh and that this is one of the best places to visit in India . This is one of the top destinations in the country to have an opportunity to see tigers in their natural environment, though doing so requires a lot of patience, and some early wake up calls as these animals are incredibly elusive.

It is said that around 40 tigers live in the park, though spotting them isn’t easy and requires several game drives. The best time to spot them is in the very early morning hours or in the late afternoon, right before sunset. They are night creatures that tend to roam alone and prefer wet areas, so the best time of the year to visit Satpura for chances to see tigers is during or right after the wet season.

UNESCO Site Buddhist Monument at Sanchi – Madhya Pradesh Tourist Places

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Sanchi is definitely a must-visit Tourist Place in Madhya Pradesh. It is about a 1-hour drive from Bhopal. The stone Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest structures in India and dates back to 300 B.C. It was inscribed as a UNESCO Site in 1989.

The four gateways that surround the Mahastupa (Great Stupa) have intricate carvings that show important events in Buddha’s life and supposedly the ashes of Buddha himself have found their final resting place inside the Great Stupa.

Like most sights in India, you can visit from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Indian citizens pay an entrance fee of 60 INR and foreign citizens pay 500 INR.

Khajuraho Group of Monuments – UNESCO Site India

Another one of the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places is the Khajuraho Monuments in Chhatarpur. They were built between 950-1050 AD and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Out of the original 85 temples, only 20 remain, but they are well worth a visit. The temple complex is most known for its celebration of eroticism and showcases a plentitude of sculptures in suggestive poses. Their intricate carving and architectural skill will leave you in awe.

A big thank you to Madhya Pradesh Tourism for inviting me to the Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart and showing me this stunning region.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.
