Mongolia Tours & Vacations
Landing in the concrete jungle of Ulaanbaatar, you might wonder where Mongolia keeps its famous wide-open spaces.
But just wait until you catch your first glimpse of sunrise over the famous Mongolian steppe. There’s no other view on Earth quite like it: mile after mile of rolling grassy plains, dotted with the white domes of gers and broken up with golden dunes or the craggy peaks of Tavan Bogd and the Altai mountains. It’s probably no surprise that our Mongolia tours are mostly about the getting out into the wild – soaking in the hot springs of Tsenkher or hiking through the Khogno Khan – but you’ll find there’s more to this country than just good views. With its epic history, brief communist past and a (proudly) democratic future, Mongolia is ready to greet the 21st century with plenty to offer the traveler.

Best time to visit mongolia.
Mongolia has an extreme continental climate due to its inland location. The best time for traveling is from May to October when the weather is pleasant. Due to the popularity of the Naadam Festival, July is the busiest time to go; it can get crowded, but Ulaanbaatar buzzes with an incredible vibe during this time.
The wet season is from July to August and although it rains frequently during this time, the rain turns the countryside into a pleasant shade of green. It can get extremely cold from June to October, with snowstorms sometimes grounding flights and bringing transport systems to a halt.
Culture and customs
Mongolia is known for its strong nomadic traditions, but life has recently become more urbanized for many citizens in this sparsely populated country. Almost 50% of the population live in or near an urban centers, while the other 50% live a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the countryside; although, settled agricultural communities can be found in rural areas and are growing each year. Despite this change in lifestyle, the rich nomadic heritage remains strong and traditional Mongol songs, dance, stories and clothing are still celebrated, especially during festivals and national holidays.
Many Mongolian people are Buddhist - this is evident in the monasteries and temples that populate the urban areas as well as the remote regions. Shamanism is also still in existence in some of the more isolated regions of Mongolia where the proud cultures have been somewhat protected from modern influences.
A common thread that links most Mongolians is respect for family and the importance of hospitality. Probably borne from the nomadic way of life, sharing with others and receiving guests with grace is a common theme that recurs in Mongolian society. Harsh conditions, a changeable climate and the uncertainty of nomadic life mean that most Mongolians go out of their way to provide a safe haven for family, friends and guests. It is for this reason that turning down food or not accepting a warm welcome is not advisable.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Mongolian food will probably be very different to what you’re used to. Due to many Mongolians living a nomadic lifestyle, access to ingredients and different modes of cooking are limited. Fermented milk products and meats such as goat, mutton and horse are commonly eaten. Vegetarians might find eating difficult here, especially since refusing food is considered rude when visiting people’s homes. The cafes and eateries of Ulaanbaatar offer more variety and should be frequented.
Things to try in Mongolia
These steamed meat dumplings are usually served during festive times, but can be found in restaurants and cafes all year round.
2. Khuushuur
Similar to buuz, these meat-filled dumplings are fried, not steamed. Served in the cafes of Ulaanbaatar, these pastry pockets are a cheap, flavorsome snack.
Geography and environment
Bordered by China and Russia , Mongolia is a land of mountains and plateaus, grasslands, marshes and deserts. Even though Mongolia is landlocked, Lake Khovsgol (one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes) provides 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water. This ancient lake provides much of the drinking water for the animal and human population, with the surrounding areas providing lush habitats for wolves, ibex, deer and bears. Due to Mongolia’s significant seismic activity, there are also many hot springs and volcanoes throughout the country.
Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, leaving much space for nomadic herders to roam. The fast-growing capital city of Ulaanbaatar is an exception, being home to high-density housing, universities and financial institutions. As an economic centers and transport hub, Ulaanbaatar has all the modern conveniences expected of an international city.
History and government
Early history.
The area now known as Mongolia has been inhabited for more than 800,000 years. Archaeological evidence, such as rock paintings, points to groups of hunters and gatherers living throughout Mongolia in prehistoric times.
Mongolia’s early history is colored by battles and invasions, with various nomadic empires laying claim to the land.
The most famous of these was the Mongol Empire, created by Genghis Khan in 1206. This empire was known as the largest land-based empire of its time and had great success invading and claiming foreign territory, before declining due to infighting, disunity and the rise of neighboring territories.
Recent history
Modern Mongolia is an interesting mix of Mongol, Chinese and Russian influences.
Rising up to gain independence from decades of communist rule, modern Mongolia is becoming more fast-paced and globalized as the years go by.
Holding its first democratic election in 1990, Mongolia now enjoys a time of relative peace and stability, with tourism, agriculture and mineral resources providing more abundance and improvements in infrastructure and living conditions.

Nomadic Expeditions
Travel Experts 9am-5pm EST
Where the Big Picture Gets Even Bigger
In the terrain of Mongolia’s rugged mountains, vast fertile steppe, and otherworldly Gobi Desert—you will find a beauty unique to only the wildest places on Earth.
The preservation of these dynamic landscapes may be owed in part to Mongolia being sealed off from the world for most of the 20th century. Yet the greater factor is that roughly a third of the population lives as nomadic herders, moving several times a year among the lush countryside, and they honor the land by respecting and preserving it—as Mongolian’s have done since the days of Chinggis Khan.
Nomadic Expeditions has been leading world-class tours and journeys throughout Mongolia since 1992, upon the signing of the country’s new democratic constitution—travel spearheaded by our Founder and CEO Jalsa Urubshurow, a pioneer in environmental conservation through sustainable tourism. Our infrastructure and expertise in the country has not only set a path for eco-travel to flourish here, it provides unrivaled authenticity and exclusivity throughout your Mongolia tour adventures.
We present the opportunity to seamlessly explore this land of astonishing marvels in rich detail—camel trekking across seas of hypnotic dunes, riding Mongolian horses in the footsteps of the long-ago Silk Road trade route, paddling the “dark blue pearl” of utterly pristine Lake Hovsgol, beholding the falconry of Kazakh golden eagle hunters who once relied on their birds to capture prey during winter in the Altai Mountains.
Staying in luxuriously appointed traditional gers and meeting local families of Mongolia’s eminently hospitable nomadic people—you will come to know more than a place, but a timeless way of life.

Explore Mongolia. Responsibly. Sustainably. Luxuriously. And safely, with Mongolia's most respected tour operator.
I enjoyed sitting outside at night seeing the stars and listening to the wonderful quiet and walking around in daylight, looking at the plants and the nearby great herds.… I have traveled a great deal … and this trip was one of the most educational and enjoyable.
Eco ger camps. Food. Seeing the wild horses. Feeling one with the country.… The trip exceeded every expectation I had.… The driver and guide were excellent.… The gers were comfortable.... All the food was fresh, plentiful and delicious.
I had four musts — Naadam, Przewalski's horses, riding a two-hump camel, drinking Chinggis Vodka. They were all great. Seeing the countryside from the back seat of a chauffeured Lexus was just icing on the cake.
Suddenly what seemed an empty landscape was peopled by millions of journeys. The hospitality and generosity and friendship offered by the Kazah and Tuvan families was wonderful. I had expected to feel an outsider but was welcomed into their lives.
The eagle festival was my favorite time in Mongolia. Having an eagle perched on my arm was in many ways spiritual.… I had been informed by previous visitors that a trip to Mongolia would be exceptional. It was, far exceeding my high expectations!
Traveling by four wheel drive on a no-lane freeway!! It was fantastic.… [Our tour leader] cared about our needs, and very easily adapted when the situation required. She always kept her eyes on our group and waited when the last person was walking slowly.
I liked the visits with families. Very interesting to see old traditional couples such as the eagle hunter and his wife, and then his daughter and her family who are "modern."
We have been telling all who will listen that Mongolia is the place to visit! The families we met in the gers were wonderful.… Thank you for making this experience so memorable … and did I mention FUN?
Everything went wonderfully.… [Our tour leader's] enthusiasm is contagious and he was an adept problem-solver.… I am grateful we had these specific drivers as they always knew where they were going, and could drive safely over very challenging terrain.
Very organized and it seemed to hit all the highlights.… We came back to camp every night tired and that is a good thing.… The restaurants' meals were delicious. The ger camp food was good.
Thank you, thank you! We really wanted this time be special for our family, and I am so thankful for your company in creating something unique and memorable for us!

Mongolia Tour Reviews
My first inquiry about the tour was swiftly addressed, and the service was excellent and very helpful. The trip itself was excellent; it was a perfect opportunity to see everything significant and discover a ton about the region’s history. The guide was excellent. Excellent knowledge, flexibility, and a willingness to go above and beyond to make sure I received what I needed out of the experience. Having deal with this company and its associated trip providers is highly recommended! 🙂
This tour just BLEW me away in every aspect. Prior to signing up for this tour, I knew very little about Mongolia, yet our guide was kind and knowledgeable the entire time. I am in awe of these nations’ beauty and surprised by their fortitude. In addition to returning, I’ll urge everyone I know to visit Mongolia. Book this Mongolia vacation immediately; you won’t be disappointed this.
We have never taken a tour quite like this one. This Mongolia vacation was made remarkable by our skilled guide, drivers, and company. The trip is designed with kids, adults, and seniors in mind. Not only do I heartily endorse them, but my family and I will participate in any tour they provide. Thank you very much, so much.

Essence of Mongolia - 5 Days
We absolutely LOVED our 5 day trip to Mongolia, spending a day in the city of Ulaan Bator before heading out was wonderful, but nothing beat the Nomadic family homestays & two-hump camel ride through the mini Gobi!! October is a little chilly, with even a bit of snow, but was totally worth going in the tourist "low season" as we had every place all to ourselves and it was so peaceful, quiet, and stunningly beautiful.
- Local Living
Wild Mongolia
Intrepid's Wild Mongolia tour was above and beyond my expectations. Our guide TEM, our drivers and staff we met along the way did all they could to make our tour interesting, educational, adventurous, safe and lots of fun. Mongolia is so much more than I expected. I never felt like we we roughing it. Accommodations were unique, scenic and sufficient. The homestays were a challenge that bonded the group and the families. The activities gave us a variety of experiences. I highly recommend is you want a challenging, adventurous tour with not too much physical exertion.
Essence of Mongolia - 7 Days
We signed up for the 7-day "Essence of Mongolia" tour. Our tour guide, Shuree, and driver, Maga, were absolutely amazing. We appreciated the flexibility of the tour schedule -- the activities were nicely spread out and were not back-to-back -- so we never felt that we had to be constantly rushing from place to place. We also throughly enjoyed our experiences staying with the nomad families. The families were very warm and friendly, and it was nice to see how each family was slightly different from one another (some families were bigger, each family had different animals that they reared, etc). Shuree, our tour guide, was also incredibly attentive to our needs and interests over the course of the tour. For example, I had told her at some point that I liked the history of the Mongol Empire, so she took a lot of time and effort to go through all the exhibits with me when we were at the various museums (and also told me stories about the different Khans during our car rides). There were so many other wonderful examples like this. Overall, my husband and I had an amazing experience. The tour provided us glimpses into different parts of Mongolian history and culture, and really, the "Essence of Mongolia". Our guide and driver were always present and caring, and we always felt welcomed and well taken care of. Thank you, Tour Mongolia!
Customized Mongolia Gobi Desert Adventure with Private Guide & Driver
I had an amazing experience!! Everything was planed and executed perfectly, my guide and driver Deema and Khangai were wonderful it was a pleasure to share my trip with them. I learned a lot and experienced some of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen. I strongly recomend this tour to anyone interested.

Tailor-Made Private Mongolia Tour of Nomadic Gobi & Nature
We had a great time in mongolia with a great driver and tour guide! Mongolia is an absolute stunner!
Mongolia's highest peak, Climb to Mt.Khuiten
That was an extraordinary trip with Discover Altai Team. The Altai region is so beautiful, the nomadic families were very welcomed. I can't recommend enough the team and trip organization. My personal tips are: pack enough warm clothes, the night gets cold in tent. We had an amazing experience in this region and definitely recommend for everyone!!!

Trekking in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia
The trip was absolutely amazing. From the pristine mountains and valleys, the excellent food and Daurens expertise and knowledge of the area, the trip couldn't have been run better. If you're planning a trip to Mongolia the Altai Mountains are a must see as they are just so beautiful and all the local nomads are incredibly friendly and helpful. Dauren was a fantastic guide who seemed to know everything about the area and answered any questions we asked. He also knew a lot of the nomads personally and they would often stop to chat with him and invite us all for some food or drinks. He was also quick to adapt to things like illness in the group by arranging horses or a local ger for the person to rest in. Overall I'd strongly recommend the Altai Mountains to anyone who enjoys beautiful hikes and I don't think you could get a better guide than Dauren.

Reviews of small group tours to mongolia.
This trip was amazing! I couldn't recommend it more highly. Huge landscapes and big skies, history, culture and warm and generous people. The trip itself was very well organized with a fantastic guide (thank you Gan-Erdene) and really competent great drivers. The accommodation in Gers was great - in many places as it started to get cold - they would come and light the stove at night and again early in the morning - super cozy! The only advice I would give is to bring a sleeping bag for the stay with the Nomad family (if you have room in your bag and especially as the weather gets colder) along with a good coat and rain coat. But in every single way this was a trip of a lifetime.
A great experience, getting a taste of different environments, experiencing a little bit of the traditional nomadic culture and food, all with the help of a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Ulaanbaatar traffic is no joke, but once outside the city you really start to feel the immense openness and beautiful expanse of the countryside. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend is you want a challenging, adventurous tour with not too much physical exertion.

thanks to Nomadic Trails. Tulga and everyone on his team were so accommodating to any of our requests and even helped us navigate our way through the local market and barter for souvenirs. Truly delicious food as well at every stop. Phenomenal all around. Thank y’all for everything! Unbelievable experience in Mongolia!
Tulga, our tour guide is very knowledgeable and helpful, his driving skills also worth a praise and believe me, on these roads, it is a big advantage for someone like me with a motion sickness. They provided a cook for us, who exceeded all of our expectations. If you want a truly amazing experience just go with them!
and he was able to provide a varied, personal, unique experience. I wanted to create my own personal itinerary and Tulga had the knowledge, contacts, experience and sense of adventure to make that happen. I’ll be returning in 2020 to travel with Nomadic Trails again. Can’t wait!
hopping on our horses to go to the Tsaatan reindeer tribe, then finally staying at one of the best camps in Murun. Everything was so well-organized. Noteworthy is Tulga’s relationship with the tribe, which is an important consideration when we were planning this trip as we want to be as respectful as possible to the tribe for them not to feel uneasy during our stay. Our group was delighted to have raw and authentic Mongolian experience without having to sacrifice comfort – we had delicious food, great accommodation and comfortable transportation all throughout our trip – thanks to the incredible team of Nomadic Trails!

17 things to know before traveling to Mongolia
Aug 20, 2023 • 7 min read
Use these tips on health, safety and etiquette to plan your trip to Mongolia © Henn Photography / Getty Images
A land defined by boundless steppes, blue skies and roving nomads, Mongolia is perfectly set up for adventure and cultural immersion. Memorable experiences are a given, but travel in the world’s least-densely-populated country comes with its own challenges, so it pays to level-up on your Mongolia knowledge before you come.
On my own Mongolia adventures, I’ve wild-camped in a lightning storm; got queasy on fermented horse milk; broken down multiple times on epic drives ; had my pocket picked; crashed a Kazakh wedding; been thrown from two horses; and – perhaps my biggest faux pas – tried to cross part of the Gobi desert in a Toyota Prius. (Spoiler: I got stuck!)
Experience is the mother of wisdom, so here are some tips to help you make fewer mistakes on your own trip. However you choose to explore this fascinating country, remember that Mongolians are famously hospitable and predisposed to help strangers in need – even if things do go wrong, someone will eventually put you back on the right track.
1. Organize your tour well before you travel
Mongolia’s travel season is fleeting, stretching from late May to late August, so the best drivers, guides and vehicles are soon snaffled up. In the past, it was possible to rock up to Ulaanbaatar in summer and ask around at guesthouses to find space on a tour, but with the suspension of the Trans-Mongolian Railway, fewer travelers are passing through. Booking tours ahead is the way to go.
2. Don’t be too ambitious with your Mongolia itinerary
A common mistake is to try to see too much of Mongolia in one go, which can turn your trip into a wearisome, bone-rattling driving safari. It’s better to focus on just one area of the country, or schedule a stop of at least two nights in each destination so you can slow down and enjoy the majesty and serenity of the Mongolian landscape.
3. Book domestic travel tickets through local Mongolian agencies
Schedules for domestic flights and rail travel often change at the last minute. If you book through a local travel agent in Mongolia, they’ll be able to sort you out if your flight is canceled or delayed. If you miss a connection or are running late, a good tour operator might even be able to hold the plane for you for an hour or so.
4. If you plan to drive yourself, avoid July and August
The summer travel season from July to August coincides with the time when the grassy tracks of the steppe become waterlogged and the risk of getting stuck rises exponentially. If you intend to drive yourself, it’s better to come in the shoulder season in June or September for firmer ground. If you come at the height of summer, stick to the paved roads that fan outwards from the capital, or hire a car and a local driver who knows the local driving conditions.
5. Download podcasts and audiobooks for those long road trips
Mongolia is three times the size of France , and most roads are bumpy tracks, which translates to low average speeds even in a modern 4WD. Expect to spend hours bouncing along through vast, unchanging landscapes – beautiful but somewhat repetitive. This terrain is crying out for a good soundtrack; preload your audio player with good tunes or a selection of audiobooks or podcasts to help the miles pass.
6. Bring sanitary supplies and medication
While you can pick up most health essentials in the capital, once you’re out on the steppe you’ll find that personal sanitary supplies and medication are much harder to find. Make space in your pack and come prepared with everything you need.
7. Spice up your mutton with condiments
Ulaanbaatar has a buzzing dining scene, but out in the wilds, you’ll subsist mostly on mutton dumplings (buuz) , fried mutton pancakes (khuushuur) , mutton with pasta chunks (tsuivan) , or just plain boiled mutton (makh) . On a long expedition this can get boring, so remember to pack a bottle of sriracha, horseradish, gochujang, piri-piri sauce, or any other condiment that you like to use to zhush up your food.
8. Boil or purify water from streams and lakes
Rural Mongolia may look pristine, but even crystal clear water can contain microbes, contaminants or impurities. Boiling water for at least one minute can kill most harmful microorganisms, or you can use water purification tablets or a portable filtration system to cut down on energy use.
9. Pack camping gear to save money (and if heading out west)
In Mongolia’s most popular destinations, you can stay overnight in fixed ger (yurt) camps set up for tourists, but in remote western areas such as Bayan-Ölgii province, it’s a good idea to carry your own tent and camping gear, as ger camps are few and far between. Ulaanbaatar is full of shops selling outdoor equipment, in case you didn’t bring your own gear from home.
10. Bring gifts when visiting nomad families
It’s customary to bring something for your hosts when staying with local people in Mongolia. Popular gifts include food, candies, cigarettes and bottles of alcohol. Taking along souvenirs or photographs from your own country is another great way to foster cultural exchange.
11. Climb a hill to get a mobile phone signal
In recent years, cell phone coverage in Mongolia has become much more widespread, with fewer dead zones, though there are still some off-grid spots. If you’re in the countryside and don’t have a signal, usually all you need to do is climb the nearest hill and you’ll be back online.
12. Think twice about riding that horse
Falling off a horse is one of the most common accidents to befall foreigners in Mongolia. If you are keen to get in the saddle, make sure your travel insurance covers it, and consider getting some practice before you leave home. Be extra careful in remote areas such as the Gobi , as horses tend to be more skittish, often a result of mixing different herds to make up the numbers for the tourist season.
13. Observe ger (yurt) etiquette
There are special rules for staying in Mongolia’s most famous form of accommodation. Inside a ger , it’s polite to wait until you’re seated and have been served tea before engaging in conversation with your hosts. It’s also disrespectful to throw trash into the central stove; instead, place it in front and your host will dispose of it.
14. Be vigilant when walking around central Ulaanbaatar
While Mongolia is generally a safe place to travel, tourists have been known to get robbed in Ulaanbaatar. Back in 2012, I had my wallet picked from my back pocket outside the Ulaanbaatar Department Store – a rookie mistake! Also take extra care when crossing the street – Ulaanbaatar is choked with cars and pedestrians get no special treatment from motorists.
15. Use official taxis after dark
In Ulaanbaatar there are two types of taxis – official taxis and the unofficial kind, essentially regular cars prowling the streets for fares. While unlicensed cabs are generally safe by day, you should stick to official taxis at night. Two useful taxi apps are UBCab and ABA taxi Mongolia , each with their own registered drivers.
16. Use what3words to find places and points of interest
Mongolia has adopted the popular what3words navigation system, where locations are mapped using unique combinations of three words. This makes it easier to locate sites and attractions in a country with few named roads and landmarks. The current edition of the Lonely Planet Mongolia guidebook lists what3words locations next to every point of interest.
17. Get a GPS tracker device
The vehicle version of the hikers’ GPS device, a GPS tracker will provide an extra level of safety when adventuring into the great Mongolian emptiness. If you drive with a tracker, any tour company or support office in Ulaanbaatar can locate your whereabouts if you get lost or your vehicle runs into difficulties.

11 Things To Know Before Visiting Mongolia
I n a remote corner of Asia, sandwiched between China and Russia, is a fiercely independent, ancient land called Mongolia. The "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky," so named because its arid climate keeps it sunny about 250 days of the year, is an explosion of every color, from the green of the vast steppes to the pink of the windflowers and the gold of the ancient Buddhist shrines on white, snowy mountains. Increasing numbers of travelers are drawn to the wide-open spaces of one of the least densely-populated sovereign countries on Earth, where they can stay in a yurt with eagle tamers and yak herders or trace the path of Genghis Khan or Marco Polo atop a semi-wild horse.
Traveling to this breathtakingly unique step back into history isn't quite as straightforward as a jaunt to Paris or Cancún. Once we get a few logistical tips out of the way, we'll give you a tantalizing glimpse into one of the planet's most mysterious and thrilling locales.

First things first: How long can you stay without a visa? If you're an American citizen, you can stay up to 90 days, but make sure your passport is valid at least six months after the date of arrival. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, register with Mongolian Immigration within seven days of arrival or risk a fine of up to $300. After 90 days, visas are only granted for business, diplomacy, study, and various other non-tourist categories.
Many other nationalities will only have 30 days to stay in Mongolia before they'll need to apply for a visa. Those include most other countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, and more. Before 2023, Mongolia required nationals of many of those countries, including France and the UK, to possess special diplomatic passports to enter. In January 2023, the Mongolian government declared 2023-25 "Years to Visit Mongolia" and allowed citizens of 34 countries to visit for up to 30 days under any official passport.
Travel In The Summer, But Pack For All Seasons
Mongolia is a landlocked country with a climate categorized as "extreme continental." That means it can get very hot -- up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit -- in the summer and very cold -- down to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit -- in the winter. As long as you don't spend too much time in the Gobi Desert, most experts recommend traveling in the summer, when all the festivals occur and the countryside is lush and green. Highs in Ulaanbaatar average around 75 degrees Fahrenheit from June to August. Others recommend visiting in May and September when highs are around 64 degrees Fahrenheit, crowds are smaller, and prices are lower.
That said, you never quite know what you're going to get, especially at night in the steppes, valleys, and deserts. Temperatures can still drop to 40 degrees Fahrenheit at night in July and August, and the country's fierce winds are legendary. What's more, temperatures are known to change in a matter of minutes. No matter when you visit, pack for all seasons (yes, that means a jacket and gloves even in the summer), and make sure to bring a windbreaker. But also bring sunglasses, sunscreen, lots of water, and high-quality camping gear. Ulaanbaatar, the capital, has plenty of outdoor clothing and equipment stores, so you're covered if you forget anything.
Consider Getting A Tour Guide
Mongolia is the 20th largest country on Earth by area, but it's also the most sparsely populated sovereign nation. It's only just opening up to tourism, and vast swaths of the land lack paved roads, electricity, plumbing, or English-speaking locals. For many visitors, that means that the easiest way to explore as much of the list below as possible is to book a reputable tour guide. Tours can last from a single afternoon in a particular spot to a three-week odyssey across the country.
Most tour companies offer some version of a "Top Hits"-style tour that guides visitors through Mongolia's most popular attractions, including staying in a yurt, riding horses, attending festivals, and visiting mountains, forests, and temples. They also offer more specialized tours that include touring through nomadic communities nationwide, visiting reindeer herders in the north, staying with Kazakh eagle hunters, or meeting the competitors of the Naadam Festival. If you want to mix and match all these experiences, you'll probably be able to, as many tour companies allow custom tours.
Prepare If You Want To Go It Alone
All that said, if you're traveling to Mongolia at all, you're probably an adventurous spirit allergic to anything even close to a coach bus full of cameras and fanny packs. However, if you want to plan your own trip through the country and leave the comforts of Ulaanbaatar, be sure to spend a long time preparing, even if you just plan to drive.
It's best to approach the preparation as you would to any remote wilderness. Bring camping gear, a First Aid kit, a hefty supply of non-perishable foods, and filtered water. Bring water purification tablets just in case, and hydrate a lot: Much of the country is very dry, and dehydration can hit unsuspecting travelers. Don't forget medications, particularly if you have pollen allergies.
Rent a sturdy four-wheel drive vehicle that can travel on unpaved roads, and get a few spare tires. Think of every travel insurance policy you can, then get another one. It's best to drive in either June or September since the grass of the steppes can be waterlogged in July or August. Cell service is unreliable in the wilderness, so map out your trip beforehand and get a GPS tracker that will allow a support office in Ulaanbaatar to locate you if you run into trouble. And just like any good road trip, stock up on downloaded podcasts, music, audiobooks, and actual books. One book to remember is a Mongolian phrasebook: Outside Ulaanbaatar, not everyone speaks English.
Address Dietary Needs Beforehand
Mongolia is a carnivore's paradise and a vegetarian's surmountable challenge. Much of the country makes a living through herding, so many animals eventually end up on plates. Staples of the Mongolian diet include mutton, beef, goat, horse, and camels. Meat finds its way into most dishes, whether it's inside steamed dumplings (buuz), fried dumplings (khuushuur), stir fry (tsuivan), or the iconic Mongolian barbecue (khorkhog).
Milk is equally popular, and some popular local dishes include aaruul (made from boiled yogurt), airag (a slightly alcoholic beverage made from fermented mare's milk), or khoormog, which is yogurt made from camel milk.
The standard local diet can present a challenge if you're a vegetarian, lactose intolerant, or kosher. What's more, if you plan to stay with nomads, it is considered disrespectful not to eat the food they cook for you. Make sure to communicate any dietary preferences with your tour guide ahead of time so you can plan the trip accordingly. When you start your trip in Ulaanbaatar, go to supermarkets and stock up on nonperishable foods you can bring with you on the rest of the trip. The capital city also boasts a range of international restaurants, including some vegan spots that serve plant alternatives to traditional Mongolian cuisine.
Start In Ulaanbaatar
No matter where you're coming from, chances are you'll land in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's thriving capital of around 1.5 million people. Nearly half the country lives here, and it shows -- there are gleaming skyscrapers, fancy hotels, restaurants from all over the world, jazz clubs, opera, and even standup comedy in English. As mentioned, if you plan to head out into the wilderness, you can stock up on whatever you need here.
The city is a destination unto itself, and it's best to give yourself a few days to enjoy its treasures. As a former Buddhist monastic center, Ulaanbaatar is a garden of breathtaking monasteries and temples, including the Gandan Khiid Monastery, which boasts an 86-metre-high statue of Avalokitesvara, the tallest indoor statue in the world, the Choijin Loma Temple Museum, the active Gandantegchilen Monastery, and many more. As a long-time seat of power, it is home to the grand Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, once home to a powerful Tibetan monk who ruled Mongolia at the turn of the 20th century.
You can learn all about Mongolia's past and present by visiting Sükhbaatar Square, home to the State Parliament House and a large statue of the infamous conqueror Genghis Khan nearby. The National Museum of Mongolia houses over 50,000 historical objects from the Neolithic era to the present, while the Mongolian National Library houses over 3 million books, many of which are ancient Buddhist texts.
Ride A Horse Through The Steppes
Horses are deeply embedded in Mongolian culture. Many infants are taught to ride before they can walk, and horse racing is one of the "Three Manly Sports of Mongolia," alongside archery and wrestling. In the 13th century, Genghis Khan's so-called "Devil Horsemen" created the largest empire in the world thanks largely to their prowess on horseback.
Today, Mongolia's steppes look much the same as they did 700 years ago, and a horse is one of the best ways to experience the vast, empty, windswept fields. Most Mongolian tours will include some form of horseback riding and some multi-day tours are devoted exclusively to crisscrossing the country on horse. At first glance, the steppes may look like big empty fields, but there's a lot there. The trusty steeds can take you to Buddhist monasteries, alongside beautiful lakes and rivers, and into dense forests and mountains. Some tours explicitly allow you to embrace your inner conqueror by following the paths of Genghis Khan and the Golden Horde.
A few things to remember: Most Mongolian horses are considered "semi-wild," so it's best to have some horseback riding experience. Check with your guide beforehand. Mongolians also approach their horses from the left and stand while they're riding them. Don't make any sudden motions, or you may wind up like Joe Biden, who made a gift horse buck when he tried to tie two ceremonial scarves around its neck during a visit to Mongolia in 2011.
Ride A Camel Through The Gobi
It's a remarkable and rare country that boasts both reindeer and camels. In the country's south, near the border with China, the grassy steppe gradually makes way for the Gobi Desert, which, at 500,000 square miles, is the fifth largest desert in the world. There's no more exciting way to explore the desert than in between the two large humps of a Bactrian camel , a rare breed full of wool and fat that help them withstand the Gobi's extreme temperatures of anywhere from minus 38 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit.
Several tours include leisurely camel treks through the desert's fascinating scenery. Gobi translates to "semi-desert," and it is only five percent sand –- though the 260-feet Khongoryn Sand Dunes are nothing to scoff at. But the Gobi also contains steppes, green valleys, rivers, lakes, and the Flaming Cliffs, the fiery red cliffs where the first known collection of dinosaur eggs was discovered and are still teeming with fossils. You're also likely to spot gazelles, ibex, wild sheep, wolves, foxes, golden eagles, bears, and maybe even snow leopards.
But if camels are your true passion, schedule your trip in March, when the annual Thousand Camel Festival features everything from camel racing to a camel parade to camel polo.
Visit National Parks
As you may have guessed, Mongolia is home to a stunningly diverse array of mind-blowing natural wonders. The best way to enjoy as many of them as possible is through visiting some of the country's 99 protection areas, which cover 17.4% of its territory. The first created was Bogd Khan Uul, a 7,400-foot mountain just outside Ulaanbaatar, that was proclaimed one of the world's first protected areas in 1778, over a century before the U.S. named Yellowstone its first national park. Today, the mountain offers panoramic views of the city alongside forests, streams, flowers, birds, and even ski and golf resorts.
About two hours east of Ulaanbaatar is Gorkhi-Terelj, a grassy paradise teeming with multicolored wildflowers, flowing rivers, elk, moose, bears, and dramatic granite rock formations resembling turtles. The park also features a glacial lake and the Yetsii natural hot springs. Swimmers who don't mind colder water will adore Lake Khövsgöl, one of the country's largest, deepest, purest lakes dotted with four islands. From the glassy, deep blue water or one of the many hiking trails surrounding it, you may observe ibex, bears, or over 250 species of bird.
And if you'd like to climb to the "Top of Mongolia," head to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, which features Khüiten Uul, the tallest mountain in Mongolia at 14,291 feet above sea level. Just for good measure, the park includes four other towering peaks, two beautiful lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, and eagle hunters.
Stay In A Ger
No trip to Mongolia is complete without a stay inside the iconic ger tent, more commonly known in the West as a yurt. A ger typically contains two elaborately decorated beds, a central wood-burning stove, a shrine, and, increasingly often, modern conveniences like a satellite dish, solar panels, or charging outlets.
Over half the country's population lives in these lightweight, portable, circular tents, including in Ulaanbaatar. In the countryside, that expands to nearly 90%. Travelers can opt to stay at a ger camp, which is often a cluster of 30 or more tents geared toward tourists. The camps often have toilets, showers, electricity, and a central restaurant.
You can also book a homestay with a nomadic family, which is most often organized through a tour company. In addition to spending the night, you'll also be able to observe a slice of Mongolian life as you shadow the family through their daily tasks, whether it's milking a yak or herding cattle. At night, you'll join several generations enjoying a communal meal together. All good ger guests should remember a few etiquette rules in mind and confer with your guide beforehand. It's customary to bring gifts and eat all the food you're given. Enter through the left and sit down immediately, but wait until you've been served tea to begin talking. Don't lean against the walls, don't throw trash into the fire, and accept everything with your right hand.
Attend Traditional Festivals
Would you rather watch an eagle swooping down to catch a fox, a five-year-old riding a horse before of a cheering crowd, or wrestling on top of a frozen lake? Or, as mentioned earlier, camel polo? Mongolia is famous for its many festivals, which often combine outstanding athleticism with incredible animals, music, dance, food, and traditional costumes. They take place at different points in the year, but no trip to the country is complete without catching at least one.
The most high-profile is the Naadam Festival in July, which is something like the country's own Olympic games. The festival begins with a dazzling, televised opening ceremony in Ulaanbaatar, awash with music, dance, pageantry, and color. Sites across the country host competitions in each of the "Three Manly Sports": wrestling, archery (open to men and women, despite the aforementioned moniker), and horseback riding (open to children as young as five.)
In October, head to western Mongolia for the Golden Eagle Festival, where ethnic Kazakh eagle hunters compete to see whose birds catch the most prey with the most precision and speed. March sees the Thousand Camel Festival, which shows that any competition you can have on a horse can also be held atop a camel.
If you prefer a more non-competitive -- and chilly -- vibe, come in February for Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian Lunar New Year, where you'll celebrate the New Year with a traditional feast of dumplings, mutton, horse, rice, cookies, and airag.
Keep An Eye On The Trans-Mongolian Railway
Long, long ago, anyone who didn't want to see Mongolia via a horse, camel, or bumpy Jeep ride could board a luxurious train that could show them most of Mongolia while they sipped tea and ordered from the onboard restaurant. Some traveled all the way from Moscow to Beijing through Mongolia.
The coronavirus pandemic and war in Ukraine means that travel between Russia and China is a thing of the distant past, but we're hopeful that one day travel on the Trans-Mongolian Railway will return. That seems unlikely in the near future, but it can't hurt to check periodically to see if the travel gods have smiled upon you.
This is because the train was a marvelous way to experience Mongolia - and Russia, the Great Wall of China , Lake Baikal, and countless attractions in between via the Trans-Siberian Railway, which went from Moscow to Vladiovostok. The nearly 5000-mile journey crossed through eastern Mongolia, giving passengers a chance to see the steppes, the Gobi Desert, and Ulaanbaatar. Tours booked around the train ride would plan stops along the way, allowing passengers to experience the country's best. Then they'd return to climate-controlled splendor that could show them some of the best of the Eurasian landmass. Those days may be long gone, but if you can ever ride even a portion of the train, it's worth the effort. In the meantime, we still have all of Mongolia to enjoy.
