There is a lot to see and learn, so I definitely recommend a guided tour of the Champagne region especially if you’re visiting for the first time.

In this post, I’ve put together a list of champagne tours in France so you can plan your next champagne trip. This post covers some of the big champagne houses where it’s usually easier to schedule visits especially if you plan ahead. But we also cover first a few guided tours that will take you around to multiple champagne destinations without you needing to drive.

Reims Afternoon Tour of Epernay Region & Family Growers

I am a big fan of smaller grower champagne producers, many of which are family owned. Many of these smaller producers aren’t set up to manage tastings in English, especially at the last minute. So if you aren’t set on visiting a particular champagne house, joining a tour with a group like this can drastically simplify your trip organization.

If you don’t want to deal with navigating the train or a rental car on your own, you can join a tour group like this one and still get the chance to see and taste wine from multiple champagne houses.

To start it off, visit Champagne Pommery in Reims. Visiting Champagne House is truly a unique place where you can explore the stunning and spectacular cellars. But beyond that, exploring the vicinity gives you a premium art exhibit experience. Think of being mesmerized by Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Things To Do:

Explore 18 kilometers of underground cellars. Gallo-Roman crayères are chalky pits interconnected with galleries. The crayères were carved more than 2,000 years ago. Walking into the cellars means learning the history behind the immense pits.

Visit the Villa Demoiselle. It’s a great way to appreciate Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles manifested in the Champagne House’s architecture, cabinetry, and decor. Visiting the Villa Demoiselle also allows you to discover different arts and crafts like stained glass windows as well as murals by French artisans.

Champagne Bollinger offers some of the best tours in Champagne France. What makes this Champagne House stand out is its magnificent façade in Aÿ. It is simply beautiful and comes with two staircases that serve as a division between the winery and the cellars.

But Bollinger is more than meets the eye. The Champagne House will give you unique experiences once you explore their cellars.

Wine tasting. Champagne Bollinger offers a unique wine-tasting experience featuring 5 different Champagnes. The friendly Champagne tour guides will walk you through Bollinger’s special and unique methods of wine-making.

Discover the cellars. When you go into the cellars, you’ll have to go through 6 kilometers of passageways but it’s worth it. In this section, there are 11 million bottles of Champagne being stored.

But what makes many visitors so fascinated about the cellars is that there are additional 750,000 magnums of reserve wine stored by the village of origin as well as vintage by vintage.

Fun fact: Those were wine bottles from 1830 that the Bollinger family had no idea were in the “hidden room” until 2010. An intern was tasked to clean up the cellars only to discover a stock of antique bottles concealed behind a wall of empty bottles.

Located in the town of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Champagne Billecart-Salmon was born out of a wedded couple and has survived 7 generations that share the same passion for enology. One of the highlights of the family-owned Champagne House is its French-style garden and a 100-year-old horse chestnut tree.

Explore the chalky tunnels. For many who have visited Billecart-Salmon, the most exciting part of the tour is the chalk tunnels. The tunnels were built in the 17th century, which adds a sense of history to the overall experience.

You might feel a somewhat somber ambiance as you walk through the tunnels since it is dimly lit and chilly. But it is exactly this unique atmosphere that makes it fascinating.

Wine tasting. You can’t end the tour without tasting Billecart-Salmon Champagne. The family has a summer house where you can taste their creations. You can start with lighter wines and build up to heavier wines that stay on the palate. During wine tasting, you’ll also get to learn about the different grape varieties they use.

That said, not everyone is lucky enough to book a tour with Billecart-Salmon. Champagne tours are available upon request and you may need to book it 6 months ahead, so good luck!

Canard-duchêne.

Canard-Duchêne lies in the heart of the Reims Mountain vineyard. Visiting the Champagne House and discovering their wines’ distinct characteristics are a great retreat if you opt for a Champagne day tour.

A true embodiment of oenotourism, one of the best things (at least, in my book) about paying a visit to the Champagne House of Canard-Duchêne is the full-life yoga classes offered. But there is so much more to enjoy beyond that.

Explore the estate by electric bike. This is a good way to appreciate nature and its blessings. Go on an adventure with an electric bike and love on the lush of Ludes. You’ll be able to witness the beauty of the first Cru village situated in the heart of the grapevines on the Reims Mountain hillsides.

Following the bike ride, you will get served with 2 flutes of Champagne. After that, a tour guide will walk you through the cellars to learn about their terroir and the iconic Pinot Noir grape variety. Included in the tour is also a guide on the secrets of crafting their cuvées.

Veuve Clicquot

When it comes to luxury wines, Veuve Clicquot is one of the first Champagnes that comes to mind. It should also be on top of your list of Champagne tours in France.

Visiting the family estate is a unique experience. The Champagne House offers different tours from learning about the different winemaking methods to visiting their Unesco World Heritage-listed cellars to having a gastronomic picnic, and more.

Visit Maison Veuve Clicquot’s historic cellars . This is a great way to learn about the Champagne House’s 250 years of history. Harness your creativity and visit the Les Crayères, which are Unesco World Heritage-listed cellars.

Well, the Maison Veuve Clicquot offers a picnic “rosé together” where you can savor a delicious gourmet meal and wine pairings on the lovely grounds of Parc du Manoir de Verzy.

La Maison Mumm

The Champagne House of G.H. Mumm lies in the beautiful city of Reims. If you’re staying in a convenient location and want to take a day Champagne tour in France, G.H. Mumm is easily accessible. The House offers unforgettable experiences that make visitors keep coming back.

Spend time in the G.H. Mumm’s cellars. There is so much history and tradition to learn here. In the underground chalky caves, you will learn everything about the house’s winemaking techniques and centuries-old artifacts and history through their museum exhibit.

Visit the Foujita Chapel. This chapel was built in the 1960s and designed by Tsuguharu Foujita, a painter from Japan. He was also the designer of Mumm’s iconic Brut Rosé cap. Because of this, René Lalou, who ran Maison G.H. Mumm at the time, rewarded him with a land plot near the house Foujita’s chapel.

The chapel visit includes a tasting of the reserve Rosé Foujita cuvée, which is exclusively offered in French or in Japanese.

Visit the cave and cellars. What makes this tour amazing is that as you go down the historic cave and cellars, you’ll be greeted with gorgeous stained glasses. In the cellars, you’ll find thousands of dusty bottles, arranged in row after row of shelves.

You’ll also see a sign of dedication by Napoleon, who was a huge Dom Pérignon Champagne fan. And did you know that the cellar was used during World War I? That is one of the fascinating facts you can learn when you visit the cellars.

Maison Dom Pérignon is currently not open for public visits, but you can book a private tour with third-party sites.

Moët & Chandon

Moët & Chandon is basically an empire that owns several luxury goods brands including Champagne Dom Pérignon. Nestled in Épernay, the Champagne House boasts a rich history that is worth learning about. 

Besides their luxurious wines, there are several ways to explore this magnificent Maison. From walking through their cellars and terroirs to Champagne tastings, a private tour of the Maison Moët & Chandon is a great way to spend quality time in Champagne France.

Have a taste of their Moët Imperial and Moët Vintage Champagnes. Explore the cellars and taste Moët & Chandon’s signature wines. On this tour, you’ll discover how to make those champagnes. You should be able to tell the distinctions between the two wines.

You can also enjoy two vintage cuvées that have been aging in the cellar for 14 years. You will also be treated to a third Grand Vintage tasting.

Take a stroll through the vineyards. Drive through Champagne vineyards with breathtaking views. You can then visit the private area of Fort Chabrol to immerse yourself in the region’s biodiversity. Then, enjoy a glass of Grand Vintage, Grand Vintage Rosé. Driving through the champagne countryside (before drinking, not after!) is one of my favorite things to do because the vineyards are so beautiful.

Walk the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can take your own self-guided tour by spending a day exploring the Avenue de Champagne. On this street, multiple champagne houses are located close to each other and you can walk between them to do tastings. Just remember to check about scheduling the tastings in advance in case they are busy.

Charles de Gaulle airport is even closer with a journey time to Champagne of 30 minutes on this line. A visit to the Champagne region of France is quite different compared to visiting any other wine region across the globe. Located northeast of Paris, this small region produces what may be considered the most renowned and recognizable wine in the world.

While the region may be small, there is plenty to do and see, and of course, lots of bubbles to sip along the way! This straightforward travel guide is designed to highlight some of the best things to do in Champagne in addition to some of the best vineyards to visit.

Champagne Region Basics

First, check flight prices directly into Paris . The easiest way to get to Champagne is by either car or by rail. There are direct express trains (TGV) running multiple times daily from Paris to Reims , the capital of the Champagne. The train ride will take you approximately 45 minutes.

There is also a train route available that takes you to the second city of the Champagne — Epernay . Getting to Epernay by train will take a little bit longer, closer to an hour and a half. That being said, whichever destination you choose to begin your journey should be based on the kind of experience you’re looking to have in Champagne.

Reims is a wonderful town to walk around, with many Champagne retailers, restaurants, and tasting rooms. If you’re looking to visit the producers themselves, or visit Epernay , we suggest renting a car as having the flexibility will make your trip much more enjoyable.

What To See in Champagne France

Cathedrale notre-dame de reims (reims).

The Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims is an architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Champagne. The cathedral is one of the most iconic and significant buildings in the region, and a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the area.

Understanding Champagne as a Wine

It’s no secret that Champagne is a very special wine. Surprisingly, how these wines are made is still a mystery to many. At its core, Champagne is an incredibly well made wine that takes dedication and patience to produce. It is a wine that is intimately tied to the “terroir” of the region, and each house’s unique philosophy on production.

Champagne is made as a blend of three main grape varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, & Meunier . The process has its roots in blending, in which still wines of each varietal are made from different parcels of land and then blended together, creating the signature cuvee for each producer.

In some cases, the winemaker may be working with as many as 400 different base wines! Once the blend is decided upon, the wine is inoculated with yeast for a second time, and sealed. As the fermentation occurs for the second time in the bottle, the bi-product — carbon dioxide — is trapped in the sealed environment. This creates the bubbles that make Champagne so famous.

The wines age with the yeasts in the bottle for a minimum of 15 months, but most producers choose to age their wines for much longer periods. This length of aging helps to create the toasty aromatic signature of Champagne.

Each producer has its own signature blend. For example, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is a signature blend for that producer. However, the same producer may also make a multitude of other “cuvees”, including single-vintage or single-parcel Champagnes. How many days should you spend in champagne.

The number of days you spend in Champagne largely depends on your particular travel style. However, we recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Champagne to get a taste of what the region has to offer. In this amount of time, you can visit several of the major Champagne houses, enjoy wine tastings, and explore some of the beautiful countryside and historic towns within the region. 2-3 days will give you enough time to have a good overview of the region and its wine-making traditions. If you have more time to spare, you can easily spend a week or more in Champagne, especially if you want to visit some of the smaller, family-run Champagne houses or take part in some of the region’s many festivals and events.

What is the best time of year to visit Champagne?

Champagne is a beautiful wine region to visit year round. However, there are a few times of the year that are particularly good for visiting if you want to avoid crowds and have a more immersive experience: In Spring, between April and June , the vineyards start to come alive after the winter months. The weather is mild, and there are fewer tourists than in the summer. April and May are particularly good months to visit if you want to avoid crowds. During the autumn months of September and October , visiting Champagne is ideal as the grape harvest takes place, and the vineyards are at their most beautiful. The weather is also still mild, and there are fewer tourists than in the summer. In the winter, between November and March , the weather can be cold and snowy but it’s a great time to visit Champagne if you want to avoid crowds and experience the region’s Christmas markets and festivals. Many Champagne houses also offer unique winter experiences, such as champagne tastings by the fireplace.

What should you wear when you visit Champagne?

French style tends to be elegant and understated, so consider packing classic pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. Additionally, many Champagne houses have dress codes for wine tastings, so it’s important to dress modestly and avoid clothing that is too casual or revealing. If you plan to dine at a high-end restaurant or attend a special event, it’s a good idea to pack a few dressier items, such as a cocktail dress or a dress shirt and slacks. When you’re out during the day, wear comfortable shoes. Champagne is a region with plenty of vineyards, historic towns, and cobblestone streets (yikes heels!), so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that you can walk in for extended periods.

You made me want to hop the next flight to Paris. I can’t imagine a more perfect day!

We are bookmarking this article for when we get to Champagne! We are huge fans of the wine and hope to get there soon…thanks for all the terrific recommendations!

I absolutely love Champagne-but my favorite thing (other than visiting small grower-producers I represented in past) it sitting in wine bars and restaurants and getting to choose from sooooo many different Champagnes by the glass! Not just the big guys- give me some steak tartare and a glass of champers and it’s a good day!

I’ve spent time looking at how to plan a trip to visit Champagne and now I have a much better blueprint. This answered all my questions! And OMG the Perching Bar sounds like my idea of Heaven! A Treehouse with Champagne? Are you kidding me? I may go and then never leave.

The Beginner's Guide to Visiting Champagne

If that celebratory glass of champagne has gone to your head, you’re not alone. Americans are drinking France's most famous fizz more and more: In 2017, stateside shipments of Champagne reached their highest levels ever , at 23 million bottles (a five percent increase from the previous year). What if you want to go further than the local wine store, and visit the land that gave the world the ultimate mood-lifter in a glass ? You won't be able to just show up and traipse around Veuve Clicquot's svelte vineyards; you'll need a plan. We gathered our need-to-know tips into this handy primer to help you out.

First things first: The term "Champagne" isn't a catch-all for anything sparkling in a glass. It refers to a type of bubbly, made according to specific standards, within one of the sub-zones of France's Champagne region. This winemaking region surrounds Paris on the northeast side, with the cities of Reims and Epernay often used as visitors' home bases (heavy-hitter producers like the aforementioned Veuve and Mumm are there, too). They're both easily accessible by train from Paris and less than a two-hour ride away, though you can rent a car (or hire a driver—particularly recommended if you plan to drink and not stay overnight).

Epernay is one of our favorite home bases for a Champagne tour.

Two days is plenty for a first visit, according to Caroline Brun, one of the area's foremost guides. “Don’t worry," she says with a laugh. "You will be addicted to Champagne after that first visit, and next time, you can visit for longer.” Avoid harvest time, usually in late summer, especially if you want to see the smaller, independent vineyards rather than just the big name brands. Those owner-operated set-ups—known as grower champagnes—will likely be too busy to welcome visitors. Instead, Brun recommends going in October and November. “The harvest is over, but you can still find some grapes remaining in the vineyards," she says. "The colors are changing, so all the slopes aren’t green, but reddish gold.”

What to Pack

Though quaffing a glass of champagne might be glamorous, adopt a more practical approach for outfitting yourself when you visit the region. Bring sneakers or flat shoes: Many of the roads are cobbled, the cellars are uneven, and you’ll likely be picking your way through the vines. A sweater or down vest is handy, too: The weather in this part of northern France can prove rather English (think: gray and rainy, regardless of time of year), and the caves are often chilly, too.

Have a Strategy

Don’t expect to be spontaneous, either. Unlike Napa, or even Bordeaux, where tasting rooms are usually ready to welcome walk-ins, even the larger houses in Champagne operate by appointment. Check websites to book your slot (be prompt: lateness isn’t just considered rude—it might result in your forfeiting access). Wineries open in the morning and almost all will shut over lunch. “Remember that it’s really important to have a hearty breakfast, since you may well have your first tasting at 10 a.m. [before drinking all day], and you may not be used to that,” says Jenna Jones, from wine tour specialist Grape Escapes .

Logistics in the region can be frustrating. Public transportation is patchy, and taxi prices are exorbitant: Call for a pick-up from a vineyard beyond city limits, and you’ll pay not only for your journey, but for however long it takes for the taxi to arrive, too. If you want to explore those less accessible champagne houses, it’s best to book a tour that includes transport. If time is short, visit Montagne de Reims, home to Ruinart and Taittinger.

Where to Taste

Champagne has five main regions , or zones. Stay in Reims to explore the Montagne de Reims , which focuses on pinot noir. This zone makes the fullest bodied Champagnes, often intended to age. By contrast, base yourself in Epernay to explore the pinot meunier–focused region of the Vallée de la Marne . Pinot meunier is usually blended with other grapes; for example, it’s used with pinot noir to make delicious blanc des noirs . Stay there, too, if you’re curious to see the Côte des Blancs , which focuses solely on chardonnay-based bubbly. This is also used in blends or to make the light, aperitif-style blanc de blancs Champagne. You could make Troyes your base if you want to explore two lesser-known areas: the Aube , which contributes grapes mostly for non-vintage fizz, and the newish Côte de Sézanne , which specializes in chardonnay-focused plantings.

The first three regions will hold the greatest interest for most travelers. You can visit all three in a single day, albeit with a little planning, but if you’d rather spend less time commuting and dive deep into a single region, Jones recommends focusing on the Montagne de Reims. Most household name champagnes lean heavily on pinot noir, she says, so visitors’ palates tend to be accustomed to this style. Such familiarity also makes tasting more accessible, and it’s easier for a newbie to discern the subtle differences between the houses there.

Among the major marquees, don’t miss Taittinger , which most insiders agree is the best organized and most insightful of the visitor experiences. Ruinart , too, is a standout. Among grower champagnes, try Eric Rodez in Ambonnay, which makes an unusual blanc de blancs from chardonnay grown there, or the Côte des Blancs–based Henry de Vaugency , where the English-speaking owner Pascal conducts tours personally (his Grand Cru quality wines start at less than €20 per bottle, too). There’s a fine museum at the tiny vineyard of Meteyer , which also produces superb Champagne from the Côte des Noirs; another notable nearby is Lamiable , in the Grand Cru village of Tours sur Marne.

One major advantage to visiting smaller produces like these: The entire process takes place onsite, so you can see the journey from grape to bottle. Larger brands, by contrast, tend to welcome visitors solely to their cellars, where the bottles are stored.

Epernay is arguably the handiest base, as it’s at the center of the region. What's more, its main drag is the Avenue de Champagne, whose tenants read like a roll call of the area’s best-known alums: Moët & Chandon (tip: despite the SNL skit, it's pronounced "Mo-ET"), Perrier Jouët, Pol Roger, and more. Even better, a new five-star hotel and spa, Royal Champagne , opened this spring north of the town and is owned by Franco-American couple Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, who also own biodynamic Champagne house Leclerc Briant . It’s on a storied site, where Napoleon once guzzled a few magnums. The head sommelier of its restaurant, Alberto Segade—a veteran of London’s Claridge's —is especially knowledgeable.

Reims has its own attractions beyond the local wine—its Gothic cathedral, for example—and as a university town, is much livelier in the evenings; both Ruinart and Taittinger are here. Stay in the city center at the historic, 18-room Grand Hotel des Templiers . There’s a fistful of Michelin-starred restaurants in the city—and though delicious, they tend to be overpriced. Consider eating among the locals at fish restaurant Le Bocal , tucked in the back of a fishmonger, and the funky, deli-style wine shop and wine bar Au Bon Manger .

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider Troyes . Less business-focused than the other two, it retains far more of those medieval buildings, with their familiar, whitewashed wooden façades. One of them is the wood-timbered Maison de Rhodes , right in the historic center. It was once the local base for the Knights of Malta, hence the name. The wine bar and shop Au Crieurs de Vin in town features mostly organic Champagnes, many of them surprisingly affordable.

8 Top Champagne Houses in Reims, France

Wine lovers visiting Paris often choose to take a day trip to Reims for Champagne tasting. Getting there via train from Paris is actually very easy and quick. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the bubbles at a few of the top Champagne houses in Reims.

Reims is the center of the Champagne world in France. You can visit world-famous estates in Reims and Epernay , such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger, or check out the smaller Champagne houses you may not have heard of.

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

• Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

• Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

7 Best Champagne Houses in Reims to Visit

1. champagne pommery.

Location:  Place General Gouraud,  51100, Reims, France Hours: Early April to mid-November: every day 9:30am-7pm. Mid-November to late March: every day 10am-6pm Phone: +33(0)3.26.61.62.56 Email:   [email protected]

The Pommery Elizabethan-style estate was built in the 19th century by the lady of the house, Jeanne Pommery. It is one of the most archtecturally stunning estates you can visit today. Pommery is also one of the biggest Champagne house today, producing over 500,000 cases of Champagne a year.

You’ll definitely want to stop here for a tour to see the ancient Roman caves and art nouveau tasting rooms. The chalk cave cellars are equally impressive, and can be access from an incredible staircase worth seeing – it’s 116 steps down to the cellars!

Your tour will end with a tasting of one of the famous Pommery Champagnes. There are various tours you can take at Pommery. Be sure to book in advance.  The tours are given in English, French, and German.

• “Art of Champagne” Caves – 22€-30€:  1 hour tour of the Gallo-Roman chalk cellars, with explanations of the history, wine development of Pommery, plus a visit to the contemporary art exhibit, followed by a tasting. Choice of 1 glass for 22€, cuvee experience for 26€ or 2 glasses for 30€.
• Henry Vasnier’s Dream – 35€ 90 minute tour that follows the dream of Henry Vasnier, right arm man to Mrs. Pommery and patron of the City of Reims. Includes a visit of the Pommery Cellars and the Villa Demoiselle. Includes a 2-glass tasting.

2. Champagne Taittinger

Location:  À la table de Thibaud IV – Champagne Taittinger, 20 rue de Tambour, 51100 Reims

Another Champagne house with an impressive chalk cave that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, Taittinger will stun you from the moment you arrive at the impressive entrance gates.

Unfortunately, their main location is currently closed, but you can still visit Demeure des Comtes de Champagne in the center of Reims and try the tasting experience called “À la table de Thibaud IV”.

The experience is meant to showcase the life of Thibaud the fourth, King of Navarre, who was also a poet, while tasting the two signature cuvées of the House: the Brut Réserve and the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs.

It’s a mix of audio and tasting and is offered in English and French. The price is 60€ and it lasts about 1 hour.

#3 Champagne Lanson

Champagne Lanson is the only big House located in the heart of Reims that offers a unique visit experience that takes you on a journey from the vine to the flute. Their tour guides you on a journey through the different stages of the wine making process, providing a truly immersive experience.

You’ll see the vineyards, then be guided to the “Clos Lanson”, then to the various places where the cuvees are made, passing through the cuveries and finally to the cellars. The tour will be followed by a tasting of the House’s emblematic cuvée: Le Black Création 257.

Tours lasts approximately 2 hours and are available in both English and French.

#4 G.H. Martel & Co

Located just around the corner from Veuve Clicquot and Taitttinger is another top Champagne house that offers tours and tastings: GH Martel & Co . This Champagne house also has a medieval chalk quarries, which was dug between the 4th and 15th centuries, and it is open to the public for tours.

As you descend into the cellar, at a depth of up to 22 meters, you’ll see their interesting collection of wine-making tools and machinery. The tour begins with a film, then leads you through the cellars and the ecomuseum, and then to their shop where you’ll taste 3 Champagnes.

They often have specials and deals available on their large range of wines, in case you’re looking for some steals to take back home with you. The tour and tasting takes about 1 hour. If you don’t have the time for a full tour, you can stop into the wine shop for a tasting at any time.

#5 Champagne Mumm

Location:  G.H. Mumm, 29 Rue du Champ de Mars, 51100 Reims, France Hours:  Daily 10am-1pm and 2pm-5:30 or 6pm, seasonally. Tours in French and English until 5:30pm Boutique available during opening hours Email: [email protected]

The House Mumm started in 1827 in the historic birthplace of the Champagne, Reims. This almost bicentenary estate opens the doors of its cellars where about 25 million bottles rest peacefully in the cellars.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

There are three visit types: The Cordon Rouge Mumm experience, the discovery experience, and the 100% Grand Cru experience. The visit will end at one of the most beautiful museum about champagne. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to taste their Champagnes.

#6 Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove has been in business since 1811, and its production is 3 million bottles per year. It can be quite interesting visiting a large house like this to learn the Champagne making process. The facility was built in 2019, so it’s very modern.

You can book a tasting only, or embark on one of their three tours, which takes you to their production facility and give you an explanation of the process, along with a demonstration in their eco-museum.

The tour will be followed by a comparative tasting of 3 non-vintage Champagnes (2 whites and 1 rosé) or you can add on a vintage tasting as well.

#7 Champagne Pol Couronne

Champagne Pol Couronne was started in 2015. This family-owned champagne house, located in the historic city of Reims, offers a private tour and tasting in their showroom, so you can get an intimate look into the meticulous craft of champagne-making.

The personalized tastings here are exceptional. Your palate is in for a treat. Each sip allows you to taste the terroir, skill, and passion that go into making each bottle. Champagne Pol Couronne offers a tasting of 3 Champagnes, or 3 Grand Cru Champagnes

They also offer a Champagne masterclass and a sabering experience, if you’re looking for something more unique.

#8 Veuve Clicquot

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

• Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

• Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
• Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
• Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

Juan’s knowledge and enthusiasm seemed to be endless, you will learn so much about what makes the region special, it will take days to fully digest. One of the highlights for us, was the private tour of the small independent Champagne house where we learnt about the whole process of making the Champagne, from master of the vines.
