Sailing along the river Maranon

After picking you up in Iquitos at 8 am, we'll board a bus that will take us to the idyllic town of Nauta. Once there, we'll travel again to the Marañon River , one of the main tributaries of the Amazon, running through Pacaya Samiria. There, a  boat will be waiting to take us along the course of the river on a 3.5-hour trip. We'll be impressed by the deep canyons that the Marañon has been causing in its path.

Once the walk is over, we'll go to the camp, where the tents will be set up for the night. We then enjoy a rest in our accommodation before we begin our adventure in the Amazon jungle . We'll take a break to regain our strength while tasting a delicious typical Peruvian menu before exploring the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve . The food we'll offer is adapted to all tastes, there is a vegetarian option, and also chicken, fish, vegetables, fruit, and much more.

We'll get into another boat again that will take us for a trip to the enormous Huaylla lake . Along the way, we'll see some of the wonderful wildlife that inhabits the reserve, such as herons , shanshos , camungos , and the amazing pink river dolphins . Our guide will show you many other surprises too.

Later, when night falls, we'll see scary tarantulas and hear the sounds of birds and other exotic nocturnal animals.

Once the busy day is over, we'll return to the camp and enjoy a well-deserved rest in the tent. There is still so much more to come!

After having a full breakfast at the camp , we'll head back into the Pacaya Samira National Reserve to set up the camp where we'll later spend the night. This immersion in nature will introduce us to what species of flora and fauna grow in the jungle.

If we take a look at the sky, we can probably see birds flying over the forest . We'll be attracted by the wide range of colors of the feathers of these animals, as is the case of the yellow-crowned parrot.

We'll also encounter some amazing mammals that inhabit the Amazon rainforest, such as sloths and different types of monkeys . If we're lucky, we may even see some of these animals climbing the tall trees that crown this immense ecosystem.

Before concluding this day in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, we'll take a boat ride at night to see caimans, turtles, and fearsome anacondas in their natural habitat. Afterward, we  return to the camp to spend our last night in the Amazon.

The third and last day of the tour will be dedicated to the Indigenous fishing tradition. We'll enjoy a day hunting for fish such as piranhas.

After eating a full breakfast at the camp, we'll dive back into the jungle to once again admire the exotic birds and landscapes.

We'll return to the camp to satisfy our hunger with a delicious meal. With our strength fully recharged and after having rested, we'll get on a boat to Nauta, where we'll take a bus that will take us back to Iquitos.

A Guide To The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Pacaya Samiria Natural Reserve Iquitos, Peru

Deep within the Amazon rainforest, the largest protected area in Peru contains a flooded tropical forest called the “Jungle of Mirrors”. The   Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the second largest ecological reserve in the entire Amazon, behind Grão-Pará Ecological Station of Brazil, and covers a vast wilderness of unexplored forests, lagoons, inlets and rivers totaling over 5 million acres, that is twice the size of Yellowstone National Park!

The reserve is located in the Northeast of Peru, just over 100 km away from the nearest town of Iquitos at the origin of the Amazon River . We’ve gathered all the information you need in one place, from advice on when to visit and how to travel, to accommodation options and an overview of what not to miss in Pacaya-Samiria.

Tour the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Pacaya Samiria represents 1.5% of the country’s area and the park encompasses and protects rich biodiverse tropical forest, as well as culturally rich indigenous populations. The reserve was established in the early 80s by the Peruvian government and currently follows an integrated management approach to benefit animal, plant and human populations in harmony.

Visiting the Pacaya Samiria reserve will allow you to observe an incredible abundance of endemic wildlife such as the famous pink river dolphins , brightly colored macaws and butterflies, endangered gentle giant manatees, and a variety of unique plants like giant Victoria lily pads , and exquisite orchids! What’s the best way to tour this breathtaking reserve? By an  Amazon River cruise , of course!

About the Pacaya Samiria Reserve

History & objective.

In 1982, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve was established by the Peruvian government to preserve the vast wilderness, high biodiversity and pristine landscapes within this Amazonian region. The reserve encompasses over 5 million acres, representing 1.5% of the country’s area. Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the second largest ecological reserve in the entire Amazon basin, second only to the Grão-Pará Ecological Station in Brazil .

The park’s principal objective remains clear: to protect the biodiversity of the flooded forest (known as varzea) in this region. However, management strategies have changed drastically over the last few decades, from previous exclusion of locals to incorporation of indigenous peoples in management roles. In recent years, the reserve’s objective has expanded to include the promotion of sustainable development of indigenous peoples within the park.

This integrated management style of including local populations has had a tremendous positive impact on the overall conservation effort within the reserve, including a reduction in hunting pressure and an increase in wildlife populations. Once local populations were given areas to manage, a positive shift occurred and many now view the reserve as a strong socio-economic benefit to their area, making the Pacaya Samiria an example of successful living community eco-tourism.

This national reserve is part of the National System of Natural Areas and is protected by the Peruvian Government, by administration in both Lima and Iquitos called Servicio Nacional de Áreas Protegidas. There is a Master Plan for the Conservation of the Biological Diversity and Sustainable Development of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, which dictates conservation and management strategies implemented within the park. Tourists who visit the park must pay an entrance fee, and are only allowed access to pre-determined zones of the vast reserve in order to protect the natural landscape from negative anthropogenic impacts.

Yanayacu River, Pacaya Samiria Natural Reserve

Yanayacu River, Pacaya Samiria Natural Reserve

The habitat types found in the Peruvian Amazon resulted from large-scale geologic events during the tertiary and quaternary periods. The Samiria River basin sits in the Pevas lake bed, which formed during the uplifting of the Andes, and leaving a geological depression characterized by soft alluvial soils. This depression in western Amazonia allows the vegetated landscape to transform into the flooded forest that the region is known for. The Amazonian rainforest, including regions of Peru, is responsible for 20% of the oxygen on the entire planet.

Approximately 50% of the country of Peru is covered by forest, and the country is characterized as having a multitude of tropical climates. The country is in close proximity to the equator to the North, bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the West, the Andes mountains along the East and dry, desertic conditions to the South.

This remarkable mosaic of varying landscapes provides a number of niche habitats to many species of flora and fauna, explaining why Peru has such high biodiversity. Peru’s tropical forests provide a humid warm environment; within the Amazonia region, conditions include abundant rainfall of 2000-3000 mm/ year and warm temperatures from 20-33 C. These climatic conditions are highly beneficial to the growth and lifecycles of a wide variety of plants and animals.

These old growth tropical forests also provide 3D structure comprising several layers of vegetation from the forest floor on the ground to the tall canopy in the air. Plants and animals in tropical forests are extremely well adapted to their environments, each species inhabiting a specific niche within the ecosystem. This particular biome, or network of ecosystems throughout tropical forests, are thought to be the oldest on earth, the diversification of plants and animals within the Amazon are extremely intricate, unique and fascinating.

Indigenous Populations

Though the Pacaya Samiria is considered a national park, several indigenous communities remain inhabitants of the Amazonian forest within the reserve. In total, the indigenous population includes approximately 42 000 people, which have inhabited this region for hundreds of years. There are 94 communities and 21 of them are of the unique Cocama ethnic group.

The indigenous populations that live within the reserve rely on fishing, gathering, hunting and subsistence agriculture. During the low water, or reflux season, there are several crops such as rice, beans, and peanuts, which are grown along river shorelines in the flat, fertile soil. In recent years, indigenous communities have benefited from tourism, either by selling authentic handicrafts or by providing tours of their community or forested areas.

The reserve provides a number of jobs for locals, which reduces pressures on the population to hunt or harvest wood illegally. This preserves the natural state of the Amazon jungle and has a positive socio- environmental impact within this incredible region.

Tourism will undoubtedly remain an important income stream for native communities. Visitors to the park by Amazon riverboat cruise are encouraged to buy handicrafts at fair value from local artisans.

The tourism industry helps to preserve the national park by providing jobs which reduce the pressure to hunt and harvest wood illegally. Thus, participation in a tour of the Amazon jungle helps to preserve the jungle by providing economic alternatives to local populations.

At Rainforest Cruises, many of our cruises offer excursions to local communities and villages where you can meet and interact with locals. Here you’ll learn more about the way of life in the Amazon, try delicious local cuisine and purchase many one-of-a-kind artisan handicrafts. You may also have the opportunity to spend some time at a school or talk to the community’s medicine man.

Wildlife Highlights

Some of the greatest levels of biodiversity within the Amazon, also occur within the Pacaya Samiria Reserve. Many animals come to mind when you think of the Amazon – river dolphins, macaw parrots, tarantulas, piranhas , and anacondas – but did you know that birds have the highest number of species found? To date, scientists have discovered a staggering number of species including 527 birds, 102 mammals, 69 reptiles, 58 amphibian species, 269 types of fishes, and over 1800 species of plants. Several years ago, a team of bird scientists recorded over 354 species in just 24 hours, and it has since been discovered in 2015 by Cornell researchers that Peru has the highest density of bird species per area in the world!

Characteristic fauna:

  • Amazon river dolphins (both pink and grey)
  • Giant river otters
  • Black Jaguars – third largest in the big cat family, these predators are elusive and endangered

  • Scorpions, and tarantulas- these are actually gentle giants, not venomous and are the largest spiders in the world
  • Frogs and Salamanders – including famous Poison dart frogs and beautiful tree frogs
  • Freshwater electric eels – eels use electromagnetic pulses to stun prey and communicate with one another
  • Paiche – world’s largest freshwater fish (up to 3 meters in length!), they pose no threat to humans but are overfished and thus – endangered

Pacaya Samiria Reserve Tour: Practicalities

Total area: 5,139,792 acres

Meters above sea level: 106 m

Nearest city: 180 km from Iquitos

Distance from capital: 1009 km from Lima

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is a vast protected area, located in the Northeast of Peru. This forested region encompasses the Loreto, Requena, High Amazon and Ucayali provinces, and is bordered by two major rivers: the Maranon and the Ucayali. These two rivers converge in the Ucamara depression, giving the origin of the Amazon river. The Amazon River basin is the longest extensive rainforest in the world. The Pacaya Samiria is the largest area of protected flooded forest within the Amazon rainforest. The reserve covers over 5 million acres and much of it remains unexplored.

Climate & Seasons

The climate of the Pacaya Samiria reserve is humid and tropical, with a minimum temperature of 15, and a maximum of 38. This vast protected area is characterized by the cycle of two seasons, called crescent and reflux (low-water season and high-water season), which correlate with the water levels within the forested region. It is best to plan your Amazon river excursion to the reserve based on if you would like to experience the low or high water season. The two seasons that occur each year are as follows:

  • Crescent- High Water Season (October – April)
  • Reflux- Low Water Season (May – September)

During the winter months from October to April, increased rains raise the water levels of rivers throughout the Amazon forest resulting in a high water season. The nickname “Jungle of Mirrors” originates during this period when large areas of the rainforest become flooded. This crescent period is the best time to explore the Pacaya Samiria by Amazon river cruise. Visitors will observe mirrored views of the Amazon rainforest, and can easily access intricate winding rivers, inlets and many lagoons within the flooded jungle.

In contrast, rainfall decreases greatly during the early summer months, and rivers throughout the Amazon forest recede accordingly.  This low water season is called the reflux, and occurs from May to September. The water levels reach their lowest point in August, which provides visitors to the reserve a unique opportunity to walk through forested areas.

This season is also much better for activities like fishing because marine life is concentrated within small inlets and lagoons. Surprisingly, during this season it is possible to see picturesque sandy beaches form on the river shorelines. This cyclic pattern of crescent and reflux is integral to the Amazonian river ecosystem , and provides two contrasting experiences for visitors of the Pacaya Samiria national reserve.

How to Get There

Since the Pacaya Samiria reserve is located 180 km southwest of Iquitos, you will arrive to Iquitos by one of the many daily flights from Lima. From the city of Iquitos, you will travel by land to the port of Nauta, which will take approximately 2 hours. The port of Nauta is at the tip of the Amazon river where the Maranon and Ucayali rivers meet. This is where you can embark on either a river boat to a jungle lodge, or your Amazon River cruise to get to the Pacaya Samiria reserve.

There are two ways to visit the Pacaya Samiria, either to embark on an organized tour through a jungle lodge within the reserve, or by boat on an Amazon river cruise. There are three main routes that tourists use to explore the vast reserve:

  • Yanayacu Pucate Basin: This area from an indigenous community near Nauta to the El Dorado lagoon has the most campsites and shelters along the Amazon river.
  • Samiria River Basin: This river basin allows you to visit three lagoons, the Yarina, Fortuna and Ungurahui. And you are able to stay with a native community in San Martin de Tipishca.
  • Pacaya River low basin: Due to the topography of this basin, the forests remain flooded for most of the year, for various hiking and canoeing activities.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve covers over two million hectares of northern Peru and is one of the largest protected areas in the country. It is located between the Mariñon River to the north and the Ucayaly River to the south. These two rivers merge into the Amazon further east, giving the reserve its triangular shape. Due to its low altitude in the Amazon basin, it is the most extensive floodable zone in the whole South American rainforest.

The reserve was created in 1982 with the aim of giving protection to the vast amounts of plants and animals in the region. This conservation has been greatly helped by the efforts of many of the park’s 100,000 inhabitants. Human settlement consists of both indigenous tribes and outsiders. The main ethnic groups in the area include the Cucama-Cucamilla, Kiwcha, Shipibo Conibo, Shiwulu and Kacha Edze peoples.

To visit Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is to experience something special. Pink river dolphins, playful monkeys, incredible flora, beautiful sunsets reflecting on the still waters – a trip to the “jungle of mirrors” is sure to leave you with a profound appreciation of the natural gifts that the northern selva has to offer.

Amazon Jungle Peru

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve provides a natural habitat for over one third of the all the species registered across the entire amazon rainforest. With five hundred species of birds and twice that amount in vertebrates, it is a wonderful location for those wishing to see plenty of animals during their stay in the jungle.

Large mammals such as the puma, jaguar, tapir, collared peccary and red brocket deer roam the dry lands of the forest, while endangered primates like the red-faced and white bellied spider monkeys can be seen taking refuge here. The park is also home to the anaconda and poisonous Jergon snake, among many more.

Much of the wildlife in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is typical of a forest which experiences annual flooding. There are over 250 types of fish, among which the paiche, sailfin catfish and Jau catfish are in need of protection. The yellow-spotted river turtle and twist-neck turtle are also present in the waters, and there has been a huge human effort in recent years to gather their eggs and allow them the proper incubation time, thus increasing their chances of survival.

You are likely to see caimans in the long grasses surrounding lagoons, while aquatic birds in the region include the great white egret, cocoa heron, snake bird and Jabiru stork.

Pink River Dolphin

Perhaps one of the most iconic features of these parts is the pink river dolphin. Also known as the Amazon river dolphin or “Boto”, this freshwater mammal inhabits the waters of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and never ceases to amaze onlookers as they catch a glimpse of its distinctive pink body flirting with the water’s surface.

Although the pink dolphin is the largest river dolphin species in the world, it is still considered an endangered animal. Conservationists are working tirelessly to ensure its survival in its natural habitat. To experience the boto up close is both a pleasure and a privilege, and a highlight of many who visit Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

The grey tucuxi dolphin is also present in the area. This species is smaller than the pink dolphin and tends to navigate the rivers in a group. Whereas the boto only gives brief flashes of its body, the tucuxi can be seen to emerge fully above the water.

Pink Dolphn Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Pink Dolphn Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Boasting over one thousand species of plants , Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is a heartland of wild and wonderful flora. Prominent among the various flowers is the orchid, of which there are twenty two species. The palm tree is dotted throughout the reserve, as are the mahogany, cedar, tornillo and “Dragon’s Blood” trees.

Many of the plants are a good source of nutrition with others having important medicinal functions. Cures for fever, diarrhea, headaches, muscular pain and snakebites, to name but a few, have been discovered over many years through trial and error using many of the wild plants of the jungle.

There are a number of activities that you can enjoy in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. These can vary from one lodge to another but, in general, tend to be more or less the same.

There are wonderful opportunities for swimming with pink river dolphins . The sheer excitement is unforgettable as you share the water with these amazing creatures. Although they tend to leave you alone, the thrill is no less electrifying as you see their light pink skin surface around you. For those wishing to stay dry, admiring the dolphins from the boat can be equally as enjoyable an activity.

Searching for caimans as night descends upon the jungle is a highlight for many visitors. Not only is it fascinating to see these creatures in the long grasses by the water, but the peace and tranquility of the setting creates an atmosphere like no other. As the sun sets and the skies change color, looking across the water gives you a true appreciation of why Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is known as the jungle of mirrors.

If you are planning on spending a few days here, you are likely to set out on a number of jungle trails . Here, you will encounter various plants and trees, each one with its own unique function. Learning about their medicinal and nutritional values, as well as the various other benefits that they have, is certainly an interesting education and gives many visitors a different perspective on the jungle as an important resource for humanity.

Taking a nighttime boat ride introduces you to a different side of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, appealing to all the senses rather than solely the visual spectacle. Here you can embrace the mysticism of the forest as your imagination takes over. This heightened sensory experience is greatly boosted by the incredible jungle symphony. Listening to the melodic cadences and patterns created by the birds and animals, hidden in their world of darkness, is as close to a heavenly moment as many will ever experience.

The flooded forest provides excellent opportunities for fishing , and many groups try their luck with piranhas. The South American fish, famous for its sharp teeth and widely-documented fondness for eating animal flesh, is a popular catch among locals, and visiting groups can often be rewarded for their hard work with a tasty lunch!

Wet and Dry Season

Due to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve’s seasonal flooding, there is a significant difference between visiting in the wet and dry season.

Although the park can be visited at any time of year, you can expect to see less wildlife in the dry season (April – November), and creeks and lakes will be smaller. There tend to be more insects around and travelling by boat is often a slower process. On the plus side, you can expect hot, dry days and certain islands that are not accessible at other times of the year can be visited.

When the waters rise in the wet season (December – March), there is a much greater animal density on the dry land. The increased volume of water makes it easier to travel around by boat and there are more chances to partake in water-related activities. You must, however, be prepared for a downpour at any time.

How to get to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

The most popular way of accessing the reserve is by flying to Iquitos, which is about an hour and a half by plane from Lima . Many lodges have offices here, from which you can be transferred by land to the smaller town of Nauta, about two hours away. Most groups board a motorized canoe at this point, continuing for approximately three hours to their jungle lodge.

A hot, loud, vibrant centre of activity, Iquitos claims the status as the largest city in the world that cannot be accessed by road. It was famous and extremely wealthy throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for its exportation of rubber . Following the collapse of this industry, the city experienced a time of great depression.

Today, Iquitos is thriving once again through tourism, and the exportation of timber, petroleum and Brazil nuts. Walking around the centre, you will be blown away by the noise of motorbikes and motor taxis doing the rounds. Once you accept and embrace this, you will learn to enjoy the madness that the city offers.

Locals are friendly and always happy to talk with you. The market area of Belen is bustling, while there are some beautiful hotels along the river port. We recommend at least one night to experience Iquitos before escaping to the peaceful Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Jungle lodges are wonderful places to guide you into your night’s slumber. Hearing the forest at night is as peaceful as it is mysterious. Emerging in the morning to be greeted by the virgin rainforest is simply a pleasure.

The lodges are in keeping with the natural environment. They are made from wood and most are limited to only a certain amount of electricity per night. Showers and toilets are generally provided in the rooms. The bug screen windows keep most of the insects out, while beds are surrounded by mosquito nets.

In terms of food, most lodges include breakfast, lunch and dinner in their jungle packages. Cooking facilities are quite basic but most visitors are generally satisfied with the standard of cuisine.

Clothing and Extras

In the jungle, you need to account for the humid weather, insects and possibility of rainfall. Therefore, light colors and materials are ideal. A white long-sleeved office shirt and gringo pants or three-quarter length shorts are a good example of what you can wear. It is likely that your clothes may get wet during the day so you should always have dry garments kept aside for your lodge at night. Most operators will provide you with boots and ponchos but you should always check this prior to leaving. A hat and sunglasses are optional but can be very useful.

Aside from clothing, deet-based insect repellent is essential. It is no harm to be stocked up with a torch and toilet paper, even though most lodges provide these. A book or playing cards are also a good idea for nighttime entertainment.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is considered a high-risk zone and some lodges require that you have proof of having had certain vaccines, such a yellow fever. Most people take anti-malarial tablets before, during and after their jungle trip. It is extremely important to consult a medical professional prior to travelling to this area.

Basic medication such as headache and diarrhea tablets are also highly recommended as you will be spending time in a remote region.

Suitable For What Ages

The Amazon Jungle is a special place and, for both children and adults, it can instill a lifelong love of nature. However, as a general guideline, it is probably more suited to children above the age of seven. It is also worth keeping in mind that you are far removed from a medical clinic should young children become ill.

If your worries lie at the opposite end of the scale, there is no need to fret. Lodges can be flexible with their activities and, as long as you have a sense of adventure, you will love Pacaya Samiria National Reserve regardless of what age you are.
