2025 Toyota MR2: Everything We Know So Far

The mid-engine icon is all set to make a return and here's what you can expect from Toyota's upcoming affordable sportscar

Toyota has been on fire these past few years with its new sports cars and shows no signs of slowing down. First, they brought back the 86, and later came the Supra and the all-new GR Yaris (Europe only) and GR Corolla (U.S. only). Each model so far has not been a disappointment and shows that Toyota still knows how to make sports cars. For years now, there have been rumors of the MR2 name coming back and that is exciting.

The original MR2 was a fun, lightweight mid-engine sports car which ran for three generations before production ended in 2007. But it seems a new MR2 is on its way and is set to arrive in 2025. The sports car market has an array of offerings in each segment but no one has a new, cheap mid-engine sports car for the masses. We know Toyota is making a successor to the MR2, especially with the unveiling of the new Sports EV concept . Just like its recent collaborations with BMW and Subaru, it may have help from a few friends.

A Hybrid Engine From Suzuki

Collaborating with other brands seems to be the best way to effectively produce new cars and Toyota is no stranger to this. They partnered with BMW in the production of the new Supra and Subaru with the GT86. The new MR2 will see Toyota partner up with Suzuki as an engine provider. It will use a one-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine known as K10C.

This is an engine that’s already been used in existing Suzuki vehicles since 2015 and would be a good unit for the new MR2. We might also see the car have mild hybrid assistance which should offset turbo lag and make driving smoother with less stress on the engine. Suzuki’s engine currently makes 109 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque

Expected Engine Specs

As seen above, the old MR2 was not very powerful, and the new one isn’t expected to be much more powerful either. The old car wasn’t a numbers car and its replacement won’t be a numbers car either. I guess this explains why Toyota didn’t use its powerful three-cylinder units we see in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla . Unless maybe that engine is being saved for a more powerful MR2.

The MR2 Will Have A Manual Transmission

You might see this a lot but, car enthusiasts are always excited when a new car has manual transmissions. Even some affordable sports cars are ditching manual transmissions, especially the German and Italian cars except Porsche. On the hand, new Japanese sports cars still offer a manual like the new Z, the Mazda Miata, and new Toyota sports cars. But Toyota didn’t even offer the new Supra with a manual until a strong backlash from fans made them create one which is said to be better than BMW’s manual.

A manual would be expected in the MR2 without a doubt. This would put it in a unique space among the very few mid-engine manual sports cars on the market. Only Porsche and Lotus have recently offered manual transmissions in their modern mid-engine cars. Toyota’s manual cars feel great to drive and with the recent developments of a new manual for EVs, learnings from this transmission could also be applied in the new car.

The MR2 Will Be A Small, Nimble, And Lightweight Sports Car

Weight has been the penalty of excess power which the MR2 never had to deal with. The old car only weight 2,200 pounds (998 kilograms), which means it didn’t need much power to make it move. It was lighter than the previous two generations and was also faster. Toyota aims to hit the same weight target with the new MR2. This would make it among the lightest cars in its class alongside the Mazda Miata and lighter than the Toyota GR86. Toyota may very well achieve this target especially if it utilizes the new TNGA-B platform which would be suitable for the MR2.

Another side effect of this lightweight pursuit is sharp handling. There will be no need for a complicated system to make the car handle or drive well since there isn’t much mass to force around. No need for any fancy suspension either as lighter vehicles are more compliant and forgiving on the road. The combination of being lightweight, small, and nimble is good for driving fun and engagement at moderate speeds. Traction will also be no problem as the engine sits in the middle and helps put the power down. I expect this car to handle just as well as any Lotus while delivering the simplicity and joy of a modern sports car.

An MR2 Designed By Daihatsu

In line with recent collaborations, Daihatsu is also part of this project and has the task of designing the new MR2. We’re not sure if it will be a soft top only like the last-gen or have a hardtop, but we’re sure of having the ability to take the roof off. The new Sports EV concept could serve as the design inspiration for the Toyota MR2. Toyota and Lexus have gone through great efforts to show off these concepts and designs from the EV pickup and BZ concepts are already seen on present road cars.

Saying the MR2 will look very similar to the Sports EV is not farfetched. Even Lexus has said its Electrified Sport Concept is a true preview of its next supercar. With that information, it is safe to say the New Toyota MR2 will take a lot of inspiration from the Sports EV Concept.

It May Be The Most Affordable Mid-Engine Sports Car

• The Third gen MR2 cost $24,645 in 2002 while the NB Miata cost $21,280.
• Prices for the MR2 are expected to be around $16,000-$25,000.

A new Toyota MR2 may be the most affordable new mid-engine sports car by a large margin with an expected MSRP of around $20,000. This is almost unbelievable, especially since the current Miata which is its main competition starts at $28,000. But given the development costs being split between Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu, this price point may be feasible or closer to Miata.

Having an MSRP under $30,000 for any mid-engine sports car is a feat. The only car to do that in recent times is the Honda S660 which starts under $20,000 but is sold mainly in Japan and is a Kei car. The MR2 will not be as fast as the next affordable mid-engine car which is the Porsche Cayman, but that is not the point.

The goal here is to give buyers a fun mid-engine car experience at the price point of an entry-level sports car. Reviving the MR2 name is the best decision in this instance and with Toyota’s current flame getting brighter by the day, we expect great things from the new MR2. But we may not get any concrete information from Toyota until 2025.

A mid-engine sports car legend could return very soon.

Toyota has been fleshing out its sports car lineup in recent years. As of 2024, the brand sells the GR Supra coupe and GR Corolla hatchback in America, and delightfully has kept the GR86 in production for a second generation. And if Japanese reports are correct, Toyota may not be finished with its fun-to-drive machines.

Toyota is reportedly plotting a revival of its mid-engine MR2 sports car , which was last sold in America in 2005. Here’s what we know so far.

What engine will the new Toyota MR2 have?

According to Best Car in Japan, Toyota should give the new MR2 the same 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-three that powers the GR Yaris and the GR Corolla. The report says the MR2 could pack up to 316 horsepower and 304 lb-ft of torque, which would be a bit more potent than the GR Corolla Morizo. And the MR2 would be available with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic.

Hemmings believes Toyota could offer a hybrid variant as well. The vehicle would be distinct from the “high-performance sports BEV” Toyota previewed in 2023 that could arrive later.

The new MR2 should use a rear mid-engine layout

Best Car says the new MR2 will be a low-slung sports car with a “surprisingly tall” A-pillar. It should have a rear mid-engine layout like its predecessor. The report says Toyota is still considering two body styles for it. One “two-decked” option would look more like the first MR2 with a distinct trunk area. The other would look more like a Porsche 718 Cayman . The estimated weight of the vehicle is 2,866 pounds.

When will the new Toyota MR2 arrive?

Best Car estimates a release date of 2026 for the new MR2. We don’t know yet whether it will be launched in America. Automotive News does not have an MR2 listed in its future product pipeline for Toyota.

How much will the Toyota MR2 cost?

Best Car estimates the new Toyota MR2 will cost between 10 and 11 million yen, which is between $65,000 and $73,000 at the present exchange rate. However, American pricing — if it arrives here — could be different. Considering that pricing would stack it up against the likes of the Porsche 718 Cayman, we’re betting Toyota will find a way to offer it for below $50K in the States … again, if it winds up coming here.

My entry into the world of the roadster.

So, I've reached that age, and hairline where all good men decide to buy a roadster. I started my search with the MR2. After having a 4Runner (the mule) for many years, I am convinced that the Toyota reliability is no myth. However, I was tempted to go the Boxster, Z3, Z4 path. After having a Z4 fall off of the market before I could get out to see it, I began looking back at that MR2 that started my search. I called the owner, and arranged the test drive. Then I bought it on sight. Sure there are more powerful roadsters, but it isn't about that. It is about fun. This is one fun little car. It is remarkably comfortable as well. I'm not sure how, but the seats are road trip worthy, and leg room is ample. You don't feel confined. I will say that there is no dignified way of getting into or out of the vehicle. Then again, as a middle aged, bald, white guy - dignity isn't my first concern. Anyway, if you have the opportunity to buy one of these, you really should. It is just a fun piece of solid engineering.

Most people dont know what it is, but they sure like it. Storage is minimal behind the two seats. Remove the spare tire to get a little more. Pack light, Get the top down, Hit the road, and Enjoy.

Only drive this car for fun on a sunny day. Short road trips are best due to the stiff suspension. Rides and handles like a go cart due to transverse mid engine design. 6 speed SMT (sequential manual transmission) is unique in a street car. It is an automated manual transmission. Lift off the gas, bump the shift lever up or down to shift gears, foot back on gas. When you come to a stop automatically shifts into 1st gear. Unique exterior styling, some like it some don't. Very limited luggage space in front trunk and behind the seats. Standard with a soft top only. Fun sporty car with Toyota reliability.

Tons of fun, a real value

I always wanted a Miata, but their interiors are so small, I am 6'2" and 235 lbs. I fit quite comfortably in my MR2 Spyder. With a 5 speeed manual and excellent mid engine handling, the car is a gas to drive. There is a real feeling of driving engagement. I am getting 31 mpg. Never had a problem. Toyota reliability. With such limited production lots of people have no idea what it is and I get questions. Yes, storage is pretty limited, but this wasn't made for family cross country treks. I purchased the car in April 2017 with 42k miles and now I have 50k with no problems.

The Toyota Mr2 is pure fun. It had a design that was ahead of its time. The exterior is unique in its wedgy shape and stands out in the crowd. I have T-Bars that open the roof and makes it feel like a convertible but with a higher level of safety.The interior is spacious even for people well over 6 foot tall. The interior is well designed and the dashboard is user friendly. The seats are very firm and comfortable and provide excellent support. The real plus to this car is the high revving engine. that roars over your shoulder as you accelerate. The car handles extremely well and shows minimal body roll. The transmission is flawless and has short throws which adds to the fun. The engine is fuel efficient getting 35-40 mpg combined. The car is very reliable and reasonable to insure. This MR2 Drag Race Near-Miss Will Be the Biggest Save You Watch All Year

How this MR2 driver kept it away from the wall, we'll never know.

We might have a new contender for save of the year. By all estimations, this Toyota MR2 should've ended up crunched against a wall. Yet, it lived to see another day thanks to some expert-level reactions from its driver. We're still in shock from watching this save.

The video above comes to us from Sydney Motorsports Park in Australia. Organizers held a side-by-side roll racing event on the track's main straightaway on Friday, where it looks like anyone could show up and go head-to-head against other drivers.

Roughly 32 minutes into the video we see the SW20-generation MR2 line up against a modified Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Both cars get off the line well, but halfway through the race, the Toyota's back end steps out, and the car does a 180-degree spin. Somehow the driver of the MR2 manages to avoid both the wall and the Lancer, while spinning back into the forward-facing position.

Aside from a few struck cones and some heavily flat-spotted tires, the MR2 looks to be relatively unscathed after it comes to a stop, at least cosmetically. There's no telling what a high-speed spin like that could've done to the car's driveline. We never actually see the car move under its own power before the video cuts to the next race. Still, we're mighty impressed.

If An Electric Toyota MR2 is Happening, Here’s How It Should Be Done: An MR2 Owner’s Take

While the GR Supra may have divided the Toyota faithful, the rumored new MR2 doesn’t have to, no matter what powers it.

When we first heard years ago that Toyota planned to revive its "three brothers" sports car lineup, and hinted at filling the gap between the 86 and GR Supra with a mid-engined model to honor the MR2, as the owner of two of them I was ecstatic. But that thrill withered quickly before the prospect of this new sports car being electric . It's not because I'm biased against EVs—it's because Toyota's apparent lack of enthusiasm for pure battery power combined with the GR Supra's teething issues gives good reason to worry about any future electric revivals for the Japanese brand's treasured heroes.

And so, speaking as someone who daily drives a 1991 MR2 Turbo and races an '87, I've given a lot of thought to how Toyota should execute an electric mid-engine sports car that lives up to the original's reputation for thrifty, iconoclastic performance. You listening, Toyoda-san?

First, let's get granular about what makes an MR2. No matter what endless comparisons to the Acura NSX and Ferrari 348 led some to believe, the MR2 was never a supercar-slayer straight from the factory. It was always an economical two-seat coupe where the engine happened to be in the middle, and one whose available convertible or T-tops made it just as fitting a summer night cruiser as its weight over the driven rear wheels made it a competent winter car.

Its proportions followed those of six-figure exotics, but price, power and poise were all on the approachable side. And for those seeking to narrow the performance gulf between their super-saver supercars and the real thing, there were also forced induction engines on offer—on the first two generations, anyway; the MR2 Spyder never got the more powerful 2ZZ-GE it deserved.

Most of these attributes aren't inherently hard to replicate in a modern EV. Because modular EV "skateboards" like the one Toyota's co-developing with Subaru can accommodate any body style from a microbus to a beach buggy, designing a two-seat coupe around one would be a trifle for Toyota engineers, T-tops or none. If GMC's doing them on the Hummer EV, Toyota can on an E-MR2. And with rear-wheel drive being the new norm with EVs, their platforms make the perfect basis for a sports car.

But EVs also tend to spread their batteries evenly across their floors to balance weight distribution at 50-50, which would eliminate one of the MR2's defining traits: A heavy rear end and the handling characteristics that come with one. Put simply, tail-heaviness increases stability under acceleration, but decreases it during braking. Skilled drivers can weaponize this instability to rotate the car more quickly, and increase cornering speeds, but those without the chops to master it can throw themselves into a spin, one often blamed on snap oversteer.

Unassisted mid-engined cars don't suffer fools, though any MR2 revival wouldn't be such a car; it would benefit from electronic stability and traction control, and only with these turned off would it bare its teeth.

Simulating the handling of a car with an iron-block four-banger out back, of course, is as simple as biasing a battery rearward. How big that battery needs to be can't be determined without a bunch of other parameters set, but it needs to be as big as Toyota can make it while gunning for a target weight of 3,000 pounds on base models. As heavy as modern cars have gotten, that's perhaps not the challenge it sounds like. Aluminum in mass-produced cars is more common than it was during even the MR2 Spyder's lifetime, EVs can get away with reduced sound deadening, and using the excuse of nodding to nostalgia, Toyota can cut costs with manual crank windows . Gotta accept some compromise in an affordable mid-engined sports car.

But it must be said, even if Toyota ticks all these boxes, it would be ill-considered to call its revived midship runabout two-seater an MR2. EVs can't— at least for the time being —faultlessly replicate fossil-fueled cars' driving experiences, and invoking the MR2 name would inform expectations no spiritual successor, no matter how good, could meet. 

This hypothetical sports car needs a name that ties it to the MR2 without suggesting it's truly one of them, and a moniker from the MR2's history can do just that.

Back in the mid-1980s, Toyota was secretly working on an MR2-based rally car with all-wheel drive, a turbocharged 2.0-liter, and a widened, prototype-style body with a giant ducktail spoiler. Called the 222D , it was aimed at a rally category called Group S, the slower, safer, more prototype-friendly successor to the wild Group B. But Group S was dragged into the drink with Group B, leaving Toyota with no place to race the 222D. The car was subsequently consigned to a warehouse, its potential unrealized. But with no legacy comes no baggage and no one to disappoint, so calling the MR2's electric tribute the 222 E would honor what could have been, not to mention establish a rally theme for the inevitable high-performance model.

Such a car could gain all-wheel drive from a second (or third, or fourth) motor on the front axle, and to supply the juice to run it, a bigger battery. With how popular overlanding has become, it may as well feature a little lift, all-terrain tires, bash plates, and a Safari Rally -appropriate ducktail spoiler. And as long as I'm daydreaming, a detachable roof rack, be it for a popup tent or a spare set of tires.

Yet all this fantasizing isn't worth squat if Toyota decides against pursuing an EV in the vein of the MR2, never mind an affordable third sports car altogether. The latest rumor out of Japan suggests Toyota's aiming more toward the $100,000 mark with its mid-engined model, a roughly 550-horsepower hybrid along the lines of the Acura NSX. That sure as hell isn't an MR2, if it's anything more than a hoax to begin with. It also assumes Toyota's third sports car isn't dead in the water, which it could well be between tightening emissions and an economy kneecapped by COVID-19.

But if Toyota does produce a third sports car, one that happens to be mid-engined and priced below the GR Supra, cars like the Camry TRD show us Toyota's starting to figure out performance cars again, meaning we have little reason to worry. Assuming the engineering is done in-house, that is, and that Toyota looks to past MR2s for guidance. But if it doesn't, and a fiasco on the scale of the ongoing GR Supra or 86 valve spring debacle unfolds, it'll be all some people need to write off Toyota as a company no longer capable of producing a sports car for a man in dandism, new rich and sports .

The 2024 Toyota MR2’s glorious looks don’t stop there, head up back, and you’ll meet a wide, yet stunning trunk, dressed in taillights that flow down to the latter edges of the MR2’s rear. The iconic Toyota logo sits proudly, center stage. The 2024 Toyota MR2's exterior build alone is enough to leave gearheads drooling and itching to let loose behind the wheel.

Head inside the cabin and the high-end quality continues. The sporty, leather, three-spoke steering wheel features small analogue gauges at the top of the wheel. Rich suede materials cover the futuristic-looking bucket seats, alongside splashes of leather throughout. Striking red stitches run along the center console and door sills. For a two-seater sports car, the upcoming MR2 offers masses of space and a respectable amount of legroom. Toyota Establishes Sales Company in Russia

Tokyo -TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today at the MOSCOW Auto Salon 2001 that it has established OOO* "TOYOTA MOTOR" (TMR), a new sales and marketing company in Russia. "TMR is scheduled to initiate operations in the spring of 2002 and aims to sell about 20,000 vehicles annually, accounting for about 10 percent of the expected 200,000-vehicle import market," said TMC Senior Managing Director Zenji Yasuda, who made the announcement on the press day of the Russian capital's main car show. TMC has long viewed Russia as one of the world's key markets. In 1998, it opened a representative office in Moscow and, while assessing the market environment, has been carrying out sales activities centered around the efforts of local dealers via various trading companies. From now, TMR is to play the central role in Toyota's vehicle and parts business in Russia. The new company will be capitalized at 1 million U.S. dollars, with 70 percent invested by TMC and the remaining 30 percent coming from Toyota Tsusho Corporation. "This marks our first big step into Russia.
