There is one terminal in Belfast International Airport. The terminal has two floors, with the Arrivals hall and check-in desks situated on the ground floor. The upper floor, meanwhile, is where one can find the Departures hall.

How to Get From Belfast International Airport to Belfast City

Belfast International Airport can be found just under 20 miles from the city centre of Belfast in Northern Ireland.

If travellers wish to go by public transport from the airport to city centre then a number of buses can be boarded from the outside of the airport building.

There is an express bus called Airport Express 300 which operates from the airport dropping passengers of in the city centre. Travellers can catch the express bus 4 times an hour in peak times from a designated bus stop outside the main airport building. The bus runs all day with a reduced off peak service and on average the journey time will last around half an hour depending on time of day and rush hour traffic. Visitors can purchase bus tickets on board the airport bus from the driver or from the arrivals tourist information desk inside the terminal building.

Tourists travelling further a field can catch a bus directly from the airport to Lisburn by using the Ulster bus number 109A and by using Airporter bus service to Londonderry.

Visitors wishing to travel by taxi into Belfast City centre can ride themselves or they can share a cab ride using the taxi share scheme on offer from the official fleet of taxis which use the airport. The taxi rank can be found outside the main building on the right hand side after travellers exit the airport building. Passengers can check out prices before they decide to hire a taxi by viewing a list of fares on display before they exit the airport building. Just a reminder to double check your cab fare with the driver before you start your journey, so you know exactly what the charge will be.

There is no direct rail link from the airport to the city. The closest train station is based in Antrim which is a 6 mile journey by connecting bus from the airport. You can catch a train to Londonderry, Lisburn and Belfast from Antrim train station. If you wish to travel to Dublin, a train can be boarded from the train station in Belfast city centre.

If you are travelling by car to the airport, please input zip code/post code BT29 4AB into your GPS system. There are a number of car parks available at the airport if drivers wish to leave their car at the airport whilst on holiday. For passengers being dropped off or collected, the airport asks that drivers use the directions to the set down zone.

There are a number of car rental firms based at Belfast Airport who have a wide range of car hire available to suit most needs. Please remember and bring along your driving license when renting a car. Car hire firms supplying cars are Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget, National to name but a few.

Bus 300 covers this route to the airport. Buses are available 7 days a week, running every 15 minutes during peak times Monday to Friday.

The journey time is approximately 30-40 minutes , depending on traffic. The cost of the ticket is £8 for single tickets and £11.50 for return tickets. You can check timetables and all the information about the bus to Belfast Airport on   Translink .

What kind of transport options can I book from the airport?

Belfast International Airport, not to be confused with the smaller George Best City Airport, is located near the village of Aldergrove, Northern Ireland. It's 18 miles from the bright lights of the Irish capital.

The local Belfast International Airport taxi and transfer companies are well established, charging tourists £28 - £30 for a trip to the city centre. Journeys are usually billed per person, per mile but it is important to contact your chosen firm for exact figures.

Minibuses are charged around £60 (roughly £7 per person) and can seat between six and eight people, ideal for group tours. Executive cars, likely an Audi A6 or Mercedes E-Class, are billed at a similar rate, equating to nearly £2 per mile.

The Mercedes S-Class, a super-elite car, is always available, but expect to pay up to £60 for the privilege.

Be aware that many executive firms will charge a minimum fare – a one-mile journey is exactly the same price as a ten-mile journey; short trips can prove costly.

Whilst minicab firms and black cabs do offer the staple saloon journey, these firms can prove unreliable at peak times, especially on a Friday and Saturday night.

Belfast City Council Reveals Updated Strategic Plan for Belfast City Centre

T he strategic plan for Belfast, known as the Belfast Agenda, has been updated to address the city’s evolving needs and challenges. Initially published in 2017, this refreshed plan outlines a joint vision for Belfast up to 2035, considering recent economic, social, and environmental changes.

City partners have committed to a comprehensive program of actions to be completed by 2028. These actions include ambitious targets such as constructing 6,000 new homes, planting 150,000 trees, tackling chronic homelessness, boosting business start-ups by 20 percent, and reducing the economic inactivity rate by five percent annually.

Belfast’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Ryan Murphy, underlined the need to adapt to the evolving environment. He acknowledged the significant shifts stemming from Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, austerity measures, societal changes, and the ongoing climate crisis. Despite these hurdles, the core vision for Belfast remains unwavering, aiming to foster a thriving and resilient city.

Updating the Belfast Agenda involved collaboration among various stakeholders, including community planning partners, educational institutions, the private sector, and the voluntary sector. This inclusive approach ensured that the strategic plan reflected the diverse perspectives and priorities of the city’s stakeholders.

Councillor Murphy highlighted the significance of this milestone in Belfast’s journey, emphasizing the importance of collective action in shaping the city’s future.

The comprehensive strategic plan aims to position Belfast as a city that meets its residents’ needs and aspirations while addressing key challenges and seizing opportunities for growth and development.

Key partners involved in co-designing the Belfast Agenda include the Belfast City Council, health and social care organizations, educational authorities, economic development agencies, emergency services, and community organizations.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of stakeholders from various sectors to work together in pursuit of a shared vision for Belfast’s future.

Edinburgh Airport – VINCI to take a controlling interest; becomes second largest UK airport operator

Quietly and stealthily, the French airports operator VINCI - with more than 70 assets worldwide, the leading private sector operator - has been building its portfolio in the UK , while all eyes have been on its acquisitions elsewhere.

Having already acquired Belfast International (100%) in 2018 and a majority stake in London Gatwick Airport the following year, VINCI has now moved to take a similar position to that at Gatwick by acquiring 50.01% of the equity at Edinburgh Airport , which serves the Scottish capital city and the second most visited tourist city in the UK .

The transaction should be completed in the summer of 2024, at which time VINCI would become the second largest airport operator in the UK by passenger numbers.

At the same time GIP, the majority shareholder at Edinburgh now, continues the downscaling of its airport activities...except where they concern VINCI , which is becoming the de facto operating partner of the funds manager (which has recently been wrapped up in the giant BlackRock asset manager).

But there are other factors to consider while the deal is secured, such as the position of the minority investors at Edinburgh , which represent major Australian pension funds.

And it does pose the question of whether VINCI might be tempted to go for a 'full house' of UK capital city airports by taking a look at least at what Cardiff Airport has to offer.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.
