The lid slips on and off in a flash, rinses in seconds, and is dishwasher safe. The icing on top of the cake is their total satisfaction promise, which covers everything they sell (they had nearly 10,000 positive reviews last year).

We travel with this coffee system and we also use this at home for a quick cup. It makes a great travel coffee mug in general, and it makes good coffee quickly and easily. We’d say it’s between this and the AeroPress Go for us in terms of our favorite travel coffee options.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

If portability is a critical factor in your decision making, then you should definitely consider the JoGo CoffeeStraw.

This innovative little device is basically a cross between a metal straw and a French Press. At one end of the stainless steel straw you’ll find a BPA free heat regulated silicone tip for drinking through. At the other end is a fine micron-mesh filter made from stainless steel.

Using the straw couldn’t be simpler. Just add ground coffee to any cup, pour in hot water, then wait a couple of minutes for it to steep (and the water to cool down!). Once brewed, you just drink through the straw. As you drink the coffee passes through the filter, giving you a coffee that is similar in style to a French Press.

Obviously, there is no pressure involved in the extraction, so the coffee produced isn’t espresso style. However, we find it to produce very tasty and smooth coffee, and it is incredibly easy to use. It’s also very small and lightweight.

In terms of cleaning, the filter unscrews for easy rinsing. The straw also comes with a bottle cleaner style brush so you can clean the inside, and it is also dishwasher safe.

The other good thing about this straw is that its use is not just restricted to coffee. You can also use it for loose leaf tea, fresh juice with seeds, or any other drink where you want to use a more environmentally friendly straw. It can also be used to drink cold brew coffee.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. You need to supply your own hot water and mug, and there’s no way to control the brew strength other than by adjusting the initial amount of coffee. As the coffee grounds (or tea leaves) stay in the mug, it will continue to brew as you drink.

We haven’t found this to be a problem, but if you are someone who likes to savour a cup over a prolonged time this is something to consider. The best option is to try and drink it consistently rather than slowly as otherwise the drink may become bitter or over brewed.

From an environmental perspective it saves on plastic straws as well as paper filters and single use coffee pods. It’s a unique product, and definitely one to consider for ultra-portable coffee making on the go!

GROSCHE Milano Moka Pot

When I travelled across Australia for a year, primarily camping out of my four-wheel drive vehicle in remote locations, my coffee maker of choice was a Moka Pot.

This is one of the most popular ways to make coffee at home in Italy. Basically, it’s a metal pot with two parts. – the hot water goes in the bottom container below the ground coffee, and you place it directly on a heat source like a stove top or gas burner. The water boils and is pushed through the coffee grounds and up into the upper pot.

Moka pots make espresso style coffee quickly and easily. The model we’ve chosen is available in 1, 3, 6 and 9 cup sizes, so you can brew from 1.5oz up to 15.2oz of coffee depending on your preferences.  You can either drink this as espresso, or use it as the base for longer drinks like an Americano or latte.

At 1.35lbs / 612g this isn’t the lightest coffee maker in our list, but it is definitely a durable and easy to use option. Just be aware it’s not dishwasher safe.

Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set

Stanley are well known for their all-steel vacuum flask which they have been making since 1913. However, they also make a number of other camp and travel focused products, including some portable coffee makers.

We’re recommending the Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set, which comes, as the name suggests, as a set with a cup and a stainless steel pour over filter.

You can also buy just the pour over part of the set if you already have a mug or cup you want to use.

The pour over filter and mug are both made from 18/8 stainless steel and is BPA free. It’s also dishwasher safe. The mug itself has a drink-through lid as well as double-wall vacuum insulation which can keep your drink hot for up to 1.5hours.

The mug has a capacity of 12oz and the pour over filter has a capacity of 20oz. The pour over has a built-in easy clean stainless-steel filter, so you don’t need any disposable filters.

It’s a very solid and sturdy device which is built to withstand the rigors of a camping trip. It also has an excellent guarantee. Just be aware that it is a little heavy due to the solid build.

AeroPress Espresso & Coffee Maker

If you are looking for something quick and simple that brews smooth ground-free coffee every time, this AeroPress might be a fantastic option for you. AeroPress basically created a new type of portable coffee extraction method, known as the AeroPress brewing system.

The AeroPress brewing system results in uniform extraction for a full coffee flavor. It includes a micro filter for grit free coffee and guarantees a 20 second ‘press time’ – just add your coffee and water. The end result is up to an 8oz coffee drink which is similar to but not quite as strong as espresso, to which you can add water to create a 10 oz sized Americano if you wish.

The AeroPress kit comes with 350 disposable filters, a scoop, funnel and stirrer. However, we recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You might also consider the flow control filter cap for more brewing control.

An added bonus is that there are no fiddly parts that are hard to get to when washing, so the cleanup is relatively simple. That said, in our experience no coffee system is ever that easy to clean as coffee grinds have a habit of getting everywhere!

Overall, this is a relatively lightweight and portable system that makes great coffee, and which is perfect for throwing in your backpack for your next camping trip or holiday. It’s designed to be simple to use, and you don’t have to worry about grind size or getting coffee grit in your finished drink, plus you can make both espresso style coffee and Americano style coffee by just adding hot water.

AeroPress Go

AeroPress also make the AeroPress Go . This has the same brewing system as the original, but it includes a 15oz (444ml) cup which fits all the accessories when not in use, and is slightly more compact. We have one of these and love it for the coffee it produces as well as for how portable it is.

It also comes with 350 disposable filters, but we’d recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You also get a coffee scoop.

It is obviously slightly heavier overall than the original AeroPress because of the mug, and it can only brew 8oz instead of 10oz as it’s slightly smaller. Otherwise you’re going to get the same great coffee.

Although this travel coffee maker is one of the heaviest on our list, weighing 2.2lbs / 1kg, we wanted to include it for those of you wanting coffee when traveling via car or RV. Despite the weight, it’s still fairly compact.

It’s a single cup design which fits most coffee capsules, or you can use your own ground coffee, so you have plenty of options to make drip coffee. It’s quite similar to the drip coffee makers you find in many hotel rooms across the world.

The Chulux travel coffee maker includes a 12oz / 340ml water tank and a removable drip tray, which ensures that your daily coffee demand is met, mess free. It’s also quite quick, producing a 12oz cup of coffee in around 3 minutes, and it has an automatic shut off function after brewing for safety.

Famous among the hiking community, the Wacaco Portable Espresso Maker is designed to be the smallest, lightest and most versatile handheld espresso machine. Space and weight are major factors when selecting the right travel coffee maker and this model is portable, compact and functional!

CONQUECO Portable Espresso Machine

The Conqueco Portable Espresso machine is a one-stop-shop for coffee on the go, with support for Nespresso pods and L’OR capsules. It’s also one of the few options on the market that has a built in battery which allows you to heat your water on the go – although this can take a while, so using pre-heated water is quicker.

Operated by a rechargeable lithium battery, this machine can heat water up to 194F/90C and the coffee it produces is at 158F/70C. You will need to use the supplied car or wall adapter to charge the battery pack prior to use.

If you use the built-in battery to heat the water from room temperature, it will be able to make three cups of espresso. If you use preheated water, it can make 200 cups!

With a 50 ml water tank capacity, you can create a standard 40-45ml single espresso shot very quickly from hot water – in seconds in fact. The 15 bar high-pressure pump helps to unlock the delicate flavor and premium aromas of your coffee capsule during the brewing process. Once you are done, it has a self-cleaning process.

If you’re looking for something a bit different for your coffee making needs, then check out the Bripe Coffee Brew Pipe. As the name suggests this is kind of like a drinking pipe for coffee lovers.

The “bowl” of the pipe serves as the brewing and heating area, whilst the stem is where the coffee is filtered as you drink it. The kit includes a quad-jet torch which you can use to heat the water in the bowl of the pipe before you suck it through the stem, meaning you don’t need to worry about power.

There’s also a thermometer so you can check the water temperature is perfect for your brew, and the filter is stainless steel and reusable. The only waste is the ground coffee. Which Travel Coffee Maker Would You Recommend?

The answer to this will vary depending on your preference for coffee style. For us, we think that the AeroPress Go or Coffee Gator pour over travel cup are our favourite options. They’re both relatively inexpensive, easy to use, portable, and easy to clean. They also make great coffee!

If price and portability are your main criteria, then check out the Primula Single Serve Coffee Brew Buddy or JoGo CoffeeStraw . The latter in particular is super easy to use and only weighs an ounce!

If you absolutely must have espresso coffee on the go, then the Wacaco espresso maker is an excellent choice.

Now you have your coffee maker all figured out, you might need some accessories to go with it. Your needs will vary depending on the coffee maker you purchase, but here are some options to consider.

Travel Coffee Mug: Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug

When using a device like this it is obviously important to carefully read and follow the directions for safety.

There’s no use having all of this equipment if you don’t have any actual coffee! There’s a huge range of coffee available today from all around the world, which comes in different formats depending on your requirements.

We recommend checking what type of coffee your coffee maker manufacturer recommends. Usually there will be a specific grind size for your coffee maker, or if it takes pods, a specific type of pod it is compatible with. Here are some quick links to different types of coffee to get you started:

Finally, don’t discount instant coffee for those situations where you just don’t have any alternatives. When we travel, I use a small, cheap Black& Decker 5 cup drip coffee machine. I have found it even easier than a French press + cleaner is better.

Hi Kathleen – I haven’t tried it and so don’t have personal experience. It has largely positive reviews and running the brand through Fakespot the reviews also appear genuine. So if you are after a French press style mug coffee maker it certainly looks like a good option. If you do purchase it I’d be happy to hear your opinion!

Thanks very much! According to the manufacturer it should work on an induction stove. There are some reviews suggesting it doesn’t, but the manufacturer says that that was an older model, and the new version which is on sale now is induction compatible. I have a number of CoffeeGator products, and they have always been very quick to respond to any questions when I’ve messaged them, so I would say that if for some reason it doesn’t work for you, I am sure they would help out 🙂

All you need to know: The AeroPress is a unique travel coffee brewer, where brewing your coffee has been rethought in order to make it as easy and non-messy as it gets.

The way it works is you put a filter in the bottom cap, make sure it’s wet before adding your coffee grounds, then you add hot water, stir it a little to mix with the coffee grounds, and then you add the plunger from the top and press it down slowly. The plunger creates a pressure that will push the coffee through the filter, in order to keep the coffee grounds from spilling into your mug. All you need to know: The Coletti Bozeman is a travel friendly coffee brewer, which works on its own and doesn’t require hot water to brew coffee. You fill it with water and your favorite medium/coarse ground coffee, place it on a heat source (could be a stovetop or a woodburning stove), and then you wait for it to start boiling.

All You Need to Know About Campsite Coffee

No matter where you go and how you live, it is always possible to make a great cup of coffee. First of all you need a proper travel coffee maker, and this article got you covered on that issue.

There are a few more things that are nice to know, and besides the actual coffee maker a few additional tools will definitely come in handy. Here’s a walk-through of how to make the best cup of coffee while travelling and being off the grid:

1. Opt for whole beans instead of ground coffee

Whole beans ensure that most of the aromas are properly sealed until the point of consumption, whereas ground coffee may not have the same amount of taste.

One of the biggest advantages of buying whole beans is that you can grind them exactly the way you want. Maybe you’d want a coarse grind one day in order to make French press coffee, but the next day you want a finer grind for your AeroPress / slow pour coffee.

That’s all possible with whole beans and a proper compact burr coffee grinder .

TIP: Make sure your whole beans are fresh when you buy them. Local coffee shops are most likely the place to go, if you want to make sure the whole beans are actually roasted recently. The packaged date doesn’t usually tell you anything about when they were roasted, and the flavors will peak just a few days after they were roasted.

A mason jar is also a great way to store the beans, in order to extend their freshness for longer.

2. Heat your water to 200° F / 93° C

Unless your coffee is brewing in a moka pot or percolator, you should ensure the temperature of the water is between 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit, or 90 to 95 degrees Celsius.

By ensuring the right temperature, your coffee grounds will have the right amount of aromas extracted and give your coffee the best flavor possible.

You can measure the water temperature with a ThermoPro TP03 Digital Instant Read Thermometer or similar. The easiest method is to heat up the water to a few degrees higher than the desired temperature, and then let it slowly decrease to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Experiment with the amount of grinds

The most widely recommended amount of coffee grinds for one cup is 2 tablespoons, or the equivalent of 7 grams.

To measure this amount of coffee accurately, you’ll need a kitchen scale that’s able to somewhat precisely measure out 7 grams. Most digital scales are able to do so.

While above is the general guideline, you can indeed try experimenting with the amount that suits your liking.

Do you want a stronger cup of coffee with a more intense flavor? Add a few extra grams of coffee grinds to your brewer.

Want a less intense flavor? Reduce the amount with 1-2 grams.

Some of the travel coffee makers make it super easy though, because the amount of coffee needed is fixed according to a 1-2 cups portion size.

While there’s a slight learning curve to achieving your perfect brew, you have to try pretty hard to make a bad cup of coffee using the Aeropress Go.

The compact and lightweight portable coffee maker wins our top spot for straightforward design and ease of use, with a reasonable price tag to match. With some experimentation and practice, it’s also versatile for making different styles of coffee. There are two ways to brew. The standard method is similar to a French press—pour water, stir grounds, and press. For a stronger cup, flip it upside-down to use the inverted method, favored by our deputy editor, Zoë Hannah, who snapped this photo of her Aeropress Go. She uses it while camping and at home when a caffeine craving strikes. All of the components pack inside the cup and there’s a soft, grippy lid that keeps everything together inside your backpack. Everything is top-rack dishwasher-safe, too. The one drawback is that the small container for paper filters doesn’t close well, and they can slide out. That’s why we recommend the brand's reusable metal filter that’s made to fit.

Freshly ground coffee beans are essential if you’re serious about coffee, but carrying around a grinder to use with your portable coffee maker is impractical.

We appreciate this option from Cafflano with a built-in adjustable grinder featuring a clever foldaway handle. There’s also a reusable stainless-steel microfilter nestled inside and a hole in the cover to slowly pour water over the grounds.

There’s nothing more required to fill the 16-ounce double-walled tumbler with java, though it lacks a sipping lid, which is definitely a drawback.

When I travel, I can’t do without good morning coffee at my immediate disposal. Years ago, I’d hoard Illy instant coffee sticks from flights (still unavailable in the U.S.!) just in case I couldn’t get my hands on a decent cup.

These days, there are plenty of portable coffee makers, but fewer options for espresso, which is why I was excited to try Wacaco’s top-of-the-line Picopresso Portable Espresso Maker.

Right out of the box, the Picopresso felt like a high-end camera lens in hand—definitely more espresso machine than maker.

There are about a dozen components, though they're clearly labeled in the manual. That really helped during the brewing process and with getting it back in the zippered carrying case for storage.

I wasn’t sure I’d have the hand strength to generate pressure required for extraction, which can reach a maximum of 18 bars (the equivalent of 261 psi) on the Picopresso. Not so. The pop-out piston operated smoothly and with minimal effort.

Some other portable coffee makers we cover are designed with an integrated cup, which the Picopresso doesn’t have. While it would be a nice extra, it certainly isn’t a dealbreaker.

If you can swing the price, the Picopresso makes an exceptionally good shot of espresso. If you prefer the convenience of a capsule for espresso, scroll down to our review of Wacaco's Minipresso NS2 .

You can’t beat the convenience of a capsule espresso maker, especially if portability is a priority. Wacaco’s Minipresso NS2 is a relative newcomer in the brand’s lineup, compatible with original Nespresso capsules.

The portable espresso maker is only five inches long and weighs a mere 10 ounces. Just like the Picopresso we recommend, it can reach 18 bars of pressure (the equivalent of 261 psi) and has the same 2.7-ounce capacity.

There’s also a similar pop-out piston for manual extraction. But unlike the Picopresso, there’s an integrated cup that screws off on the bottom.

We didn’t get our hands on this cordless portable coffee maker, but since it’s from Popular Mechanics reader favorite, Makita, we’d be remiss not to bring it to your attention.

When we wrote about job site coffee makers a few years back, an earlier model won Editors’ Choice , and the improvements made to this updated model are considerable.

For starters, it has a top handle and removable water tank under the lid, along with a permanent filter and an auto-turn-off if the water is too low to make a cup. Best of all, it’s compatible with Makita’s 12-volt max CXT and 18-volt LXT rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, sold separately.

Depending on which you use, it brews a short five-ounce cup in five minutes or enough to fill a 16-ounce travel mug. The stainless-steel mug shown in the photo is included.

Anyone who’s a fan of the French press should zero in on Espro’s superb Ultralight Travel French Press. Perkin’ may take a bit longer than some methods to get a strong brew, but it makes great-tasting coffee and enough of it for your whole crew ( 3, 6, 9, and 12 cup sizes available). The Minipresso turned out to be one of our favorite coffee makers overall – we love it so much that we find ourselves using it a lot at home. The Minipresso uses pressure to make frothy, rich coffee extractions with a manual pump so you can use it anywhere as long as you have access to hot water. Our one gripe is that it’s a bit tedious to clean between shots, so it might not be the best choice if you need to make a lot of servings of coffee for a group. That said, we highly recommend the Minipresso to singles or couples who love espresso and the outdoors. Just be warned, you might find yourself drinking more coffee than usual!

We’re fans of the JoGo Brew Straw for home use, camping, and coffee on the trail. All you have to do is add hot water and regular coffee grounds to your cup, then wait four minutes. You can add sweeteners and cream, then drink through the straw using the insulated silicone tip to control the flow. The JoGo helps reduce coffee stains on your teeth, and the fine mesh strainer does an excellent job of keeping your brew grit-free to the last drop. When you’re done, simply dump the spent grounds into your compost or trash bag. The JoGo weighs an ounce and is as compact as an ink pen. It’s a bit heavier than instant coffee packets for backpacking, but it allows you to choose your own coffee and reduces packaging waste. We also love that the JoGo can be used for cocktails and tea!

While this system is a bit on the bulky side, we love that the parts nest together in a neat, tidy package. You can have both great flavor and ultimate convenience with Kuju Coffee Pocket PourOver Coffee . These individual packets of specialty coffee have a gourmet taste, and you don’t need a special coffee maker since the paper pour overs anchor right on to the rim of your cup. A kettle is helpful since you have to pour water slowly, but a pot and a steady hand will do in a pinch. While we still prefer instant coffee for backpacking since it’s lighter and the wrappers are less bulky to pack out, we love Kuju Coffee for camping trips or traveling when hassle-free brewing and easy cleanup are key.

A key consideration you need to make is how fast you want your java to brew. If you’ve got time to enjoy a slow morning coffee ritual, why rush it? But if you like to be able to just get up and go, you might want a faster and more convenient coffee option. Keep in mind that you’ll still need to boil water to make hot coffee with any brew method. Luckily, boiling water can be super quick and easy with the right camping or backpacking stove .

EASE OF CLEANUP

All of the coffee makers on our list are relatively easy to clean. However, some are a bit more simple than others – especially when you have limited access to running water. Instant coffee only requires you to dispose of wrappers and rinse your mug when you’re done. Coffee makers with paper filters stay fairly clean since they keep the grounds contained and easy to dump. With coffee presses and espresso makers, you’ll have to scoop out the grounds and do a little more rinsing and wiping.

Brew Methods In A Nutshell

There are a lot of ways to make coffee outside. Here’s the gist of each brew method and a few pros and cons for each:

INSTANT COFFEE

Very fine coffee that dissolves completely when stirred into hot or cold water. Available in packets or a jar.

Pros: Ultralight, fast, no grounds to dispose of, very little cleanup, no coffee maker needed

Cons: Expensive long-term, more bitter than other methods, single-serve packets create more trash

TEA BAG COFFEE

Pre-ground coffee in disposable paper tea bags that you steep and discard.

Pros: Easy, no coffee maker needed, very little cleanup

Cons: Packaged ground coffee isn’t as fresh, wet bags are heavy and bulky to pack out

COWBOY COFFEE

Coffee grounds and water boiled directly in a pot or kettle for 2-3 minutes, then allowed to settle with a dash of cold water before pouring off the liquid.

Pros: Nostalgic, easy, good for groups, boiling makes coffee less acidic

Cons: Grit in your teeth

POUR OVER COFFEE

A cone-shaped holder for ground coffee that sits directly on top of a carafe or mug while you slowly pour hot water over it. Some pour-overs use a paper filter, while others are made of mesh to be paper-free.

Pros: Simple, affordable, usually lightweight & compact

Cons: Slight learning curve to making strong coffee with this method, helpful to have a kettle with a narrow spout for slowly pouring water

COFFEE PRESS (AKA FRENCH PRESS)

A carafe with a mesh plunger filter that pushes spent grounds to the bottom, leaving the brewed coffee behind to pour off.

Pros: Brews multiple cups at a time, lots of control over strength of coffee

Cons: Can be expensive, makes more acidic coffee, lack of attentiveness can lead to bitter coffee

A pot with a basket inside that continually cycles boiling brew through the grounds using gravity until the desired strength is reached.

Pros: Iconic, durable, good for groups, deep flavor, holds heat well

Cons: Slower than other methods, coffee can be a bit gritty, lack of attentiveness can lead to bitter coffee

TRAVEL ESPRESSO MAKER

Travel espresso makers utilize high pressure to extract a rich brew. Each maker is a little different, but most use a pump or plunger to force hot or cold water through a small amount of grounds. Espresso can be sipped as a shot or added to more water for an Americano.

Pros: Gourmet flavor, fast, versatile, brews hot or cold, less bitter than other methods

Cons: Generally more expensive, more steps involves

Critical Camping Coffee Maker Considerations

KITCHEN SUPPLIES

Finding the ideal coffee brewing method greatly depends on what type of supplies and kitchenware you have access to. If you’re car camping, you’ll likely have a  camping stove  and  kettle  or  pot  to work with. You’ll probably also have the ability to toss spent coffee grounds in a garbage bag and have access to water for rinsing. If you’re on the road or backpacking, a smaller  backpacking stove will be the most practical tool for boiling water for coffee. Remember that you’ll have to pack out anything you bring into the backcountry, including any packaging and used coffee grounds. Wherever your adventures take you, you’ll also need some great cups or  travel mugs .

WATER TEMPERATURE

We don’t expect you to bust out a thermometer to make camping coffee, but it does make a big difference in flavor if you get the water temperature right for your style of brewing. Most coffee presses and pour overs perform well with water that’s about 200 degrees. There’s no need to get too nerdy about it – just bring your water to a boil, then let it sit for about a minute before brewing. Alternatively, bring water to bubbling, just before it boils.

PRE-WARM MUGS

A cold  mug  will cool your coffee too quickly, taking away from your sipping enjoyment. If you want to make sure your java stays hot for a long time, boil some extra water to fill your cup to pre-warm it for a few minutes. Dump the water out just before you pour in your fresh-brewed coffee.

GRINDING COFFEE

Coffee experts recommend buying coffee beans a week at a time and grinding them fresh before each use for optimal freshness. You can also store your coffee in the freezer to keep it fresher for longer. You can save yourself some work by buying pre-ground coffee or grinding enough beans for your trip before you leave home. If you want to grind your beans fresh on car camping trips and don’t mind taking an additional item, there are some great  manual coffee grinders  on the market. Remember, every brew method has a recommended grind from coarse to fine. It’s simple to do, and it really pays off in better flavor and drinkability to dial the grind size in.

Thanks to the recent intersection between the hipster and hiking cultures, you can forget mediocre mugs of instant and cold strolls to the cafe. There are plenty of pocket-sized, artisanal coffee makers on the market that you can use to brew from your sleeping bag.  

We tested these coffee makers on camping trips, day hikes and windswept surf trips. We also discovered a useful crossover: many of these little coffee-makers are desk-sized and keep your drink warm for hours, meaning you can maintain a steady supply of caffeine when working from home, without having to pop to the kitchen to microwave your mug.

The kind of coffee maker you need depends on what kind of coffee you like – there are really portable options out there for every style of brew. If you like a long, even cup of coffee, pick a “drip” brewer or a french press (also known as a cafetiere).

You will need to be able to boil water to use with these coffee makers, although with some systems, the kettle is integrated, so you can pop the whole thing on the stove. Most make a single shot or cup of coffee at a time, unless we’ve specified otherwise, but many also come in larger models.

How we tested

We looked for portability and durability first – so glass and ceramic were out, as was anything that took up too much room in our backpack. We also preferred options that didn’t need paper filters, because those can be fiddly to pack – although we made some exceptions. Overall, we looked for the best-tasting cups of coffee across a range of brew methods, with a variety of beans and roasts.

The portable coffee-maker of choice for many coffee experts just got even more portable. Aeropress makes some of the smoothest, best extracted coffee we’ve tried, and this slightly smaller travel version is no different. Packing down into its own plastic mug, it’s a brilliantly compact device. It also comes with some upgrades on the classic model – we found it had a slightly smoother plunge, for example. It comes with paper filters, but we prefer reusable metal ones when we’re on the go – Aeropress doesn’t have an official one yet, but they’re easy to find online.

This is the most rugged, adventure-ready coffee maker we tested. It’s essentially a tall cafetiere, made from steel, with an integrated mug. Thanks to the vacuum insulated wall, it kept our coffee warm for at least an hour. It’s incredibly neat and simple: add coffee (coarse ground) and water, stir, then pop on the lid – which integrates the press – and push down. The mesh press sits snug against the wall, so the grounds stay firmly at the bottom of the cylinder while you drink. It’s very durable and easy to clean – simply unscrew the bottom compartment and throw away the grounds. It’s on the heavier side but makes two generous cups at a time.

Wacaco nanopresso

This is a handheld espresso maker that extracts with more pressure than most machines and is the perfect camping companion if you like your coffee short and strong. It’s not quite barista-quality espresso, but if you consider the fact that it will fit in your pocket or the side pocket of your backpack, it’s a very fine substitute.

We found a finer grind made the best coffee – water seems to flow straight through coarse-ground coffee – and you need roughly the same proportions of coffee to water that you would use for any drip system. It’s easy to clean and fits on any mug.

The espresso it makes – a shot at a time – is exquisite, as good as you would make at home, and well worth the little bit of space it takes up in your pack. Brewing with this is an art, but it is one you can replicate at the campsite: make sure you use V60 filters , and let your boiled water cool a little before pouring it, which should be done as slowly and precisely as possible, in circles over medium-coarse grounds. The lightweight plastic dripper in the single-cup size is very small, and even though it’s a slightly odd shape we found that we could fit it easily into our backpack pocket.

In an age where boutique beans, home grinders , bean storage methods, and intricate brewing systems exist, it’s easy to give a percolator the side eye. But percolators still have a place in this world. According to Jesse Raub, coffee expert and former commerce writer at Serious Eats, it’s often nostalgic. “Some people who grew up drinking percolator coffee want that kind of a flavor profile,” he says, adding that the temperature of percolator-derived coffee tends toward more bitter and sour flavor notes because of the boiling involved in the process. Percolated coffee, however, isn’t intrinsically lousy. When we tested 20 electric and stovetop percolators, we found ourselves describing the coffee as bolder and more robust than the same beans brewed through more contemporary methods.

One of the more common uses for a percolator these days is outdoor activities like camping. Yes, there are alternatives, like the moka pot, but from experience, I can say that the moka pot is a terrible piece of camp equipment because it’s hard to locate a cup close enough to the fire to catch the coffee without getting far too hot. A percolator will just sit on the fire, doing its thing, with no additional cup finagleing necessary. I keep one in my camp cooking box . While it may only see the sun every couple of years, there are no components that will wear out in storage, so it’s a safe, reliable bet for my morning camp coffee.

Taking the low-tech features of percolators indoors, they’re handy when you need to brew coffee in quantity for family or group gatherings. They’re great backup coffee makers, too. If you have a gas stove and lose power, which is a semi-frequent occurrence during storms where I live, that percolator can be your caffeine-delivery best friend.

Best Overall

Elite gourmet classic stovetop coffee percolator.

It’s a sturdy, compact percolator that brews a full-flavored cup of coffee.

The plastic handle can get hot, so use caution and keep a towel or oven mitt at hand.

The Classic Stovetop from Elite Gourmet lives up to its name. The easily recognizable design evokes images of percolators of old. This sturdily-constructed model brewed 8 cups at once in about 15 minutes on a gas stovetop, yielding a 170°F finished cup. The plastic handle didn’t present any issues with heat; although, if we were using this on a camping trip, we’d be cautious with it around an open flame. This model outperformed a drip coffee maker in terms of fully developed flavor, with no discernible grounds in the cup. It’s entirely dishwasher safe, making it easy to clean, and its small form makes storage a non-issue.

Best Electric

Farberware 12-cup percolator.

This Farberware percolator is easy to load and pour from, and it produces a rich, bold cup in a short time.

We’d like to see more evident water level indicators, as the interior markings are hard to read.

We like the Farberware 12-Cup for its solid build and snug-fitting internal components, which didn’t shake and rattle when moved. The large capacity is great for small gatherings, families, or people who drink a lot of coffee over the day. The keep-warm feature held the temperature for 45 minutes in our tests, which helped with the longevity of a fresh cup. Comparing the finished product, the "perked" coffee had a richer, bolder flavor than one usually achieves from a pour-over . Its tall, narrow form allowed for easy storage, and all the parts were easy to clean and dishwasher safe. Brewing took 12 minutes, and we produced finished coffee at temperatures between 190 and 200°F.  There were no noticeable grounds in the cup, but we had to use a little trial and error to find the right grind size to ensure that.

Cook N Home 8-Cup Coffee Percolator

The Cook N Home is a simple, solidly built percolator with an excellent handle design for comfort and avoidance of heat from the burner.

Brewing took longer than expected, and the finished product had trace amounts of grounds.

This well-built percolator from Cook N Home has a good-sized basket and a sturdy handle design that kept it safe from the burner, minimizing the chances of getting too hot to hold. It was intuitive to use, with a distinctively marked fill line, and pouring was easy, with no leaks or drips. All the pieces fit snuggly inside, with little rattling or jiggling, and it was easy to store. These attributes and the sturdy construction made it a top choice for traveling or camping. The components are all dishwasher safe and came apart quickly when we were ready to clean them. When we assessed the flavor, the coffee tasted less bitter and more robust than the same coffee made in a drip maker. Brewing took 21 minutes, and there were trace amounts of grounds in the coffee, but not enough to be bothersome.

Farberware Yosemite Coffee Percolator

The Yosemite is easy to use and clean, and makes a large quantity of coffee in a relatively short time for a percolator.

The design doesn’t allow you to fully empty the percolator when pouring or cleaning without turning it upside down to remove the last bit of liquid.

The Yosemite is a great stovetop model for families, groups, or the highly caffeinated. It has a 12-cup capacity and brewed in about 24 minutes: 15 to boil and the remainder to brew. The design is sturdy and avoids one of the design issues of percolators past: the handle design keeps the grip far enough from the burner not to get uncomfortably hot. Its size might present storage issues or affect its portability for offsite or outdoor use, but that’s not surprising with a higher-capacity model. There were no grounds in the finished coffee, and the flavor compared to that of a drip coffee maker, though the coffee’s initial temperature of 195°F masked the taste until the cup cooled a bit. The percolator was easy to clean, but the manufacturer recommends hand-washing to extend its life.

Judging a favorite was challenging, as all of our Top Picks had perfect or near-perfect scores. Balancing price, capacity, ease of use, durability, and flavor, our favorite remains the Elite Gourmet Classic Stovetop 8-Cup Percolator .

Our testing consisted of a relatively simple process; we filled the percolator with freshly ground coffee and operated it per the manufacturer’s instructions. We then brewed the same coffee using each of our preferred methods (pour-over, drip, or French press , depending on who was testing), and compared the flavor of the finished coffee. While testing the percolator, we gathered data in the following areas:

• Design: How sturdy is it, overall? Does any component seem cheap or poorly made? How comfortable is the handle to hold from an ergonomic standpoint? Does the handle feel hot during use?
• Ease of use: How easy is it to brew the coffee in the percolator? Is it easy to fill and add coffee grounds? How easy is it to pour the finished coffee? Are there any leaks? Is it easy to move around and store?
• Performance: How long does it take to make the coffee? What temperature is the finished coffee? Are there detectable grounds in the coffee? How does the coffee’s flavor compare to the roaster’s tasting notes? Are there different flavor results between the percolator and the alternate method? Are there any inconsistencies between the batches? If the percolator has a “keep warm” function, how well does it perform?
• Ease of cleaning: How easy is the percolator to clean, and are any parts dishwasher safe?
• Durability: Did the percolator get damaged during testing? Did anything break? For stovetop models, would we take them camping?

Stovetop vs. Electric

Electric percolators are convenient because they often have a pre-determined brew time and a keep-warm feature after brewing and are frequently faster than stovetop models. Their dependence on electricity limits their usefulness during power outages or, say, camping trips. Depending on size, they also don’t store as easily as a stovetop percolator.

Stovetop models are wholly analog, allowing for over or under-brewing as the user monitors the process via sight and color. They tend to have a smaller form factor, are therefore more easily stored or stowed, and are independent of an electrical heat source. They tend to be slower when it comes to brewing, though.

In general, the higher the capacity of a percolator, the longer it takes to brew. A smaller percolator is good and relatively quick if you’re only regularly making coffee for one or two people. Suppose you’re occasionally brewing for larger groups. In that case, Raub points out that you could buy multiple, smaller percolators and easily store them to accommodate this without getting into the higher price of a large-format model. But investing in a larger model makes sense if you’re regularly brewing for a large group. 

Compared to other brewing methods, like a drip coffee maker or Nespresso , percolators take a long time to brew. Our winning models took between 12 and 24 minutes to make a pot of coffee. Like most coffee makers, the percolator's water must boil before brewing. Drip makers and the like are more efficient at heating water than percolators and complete that step faster. Once the water boils, it recirculates over the grounds and gets boiled again when it reaches the bottom, which takes a degree of time. A percolator will never be the fastest choice for making coffee, but it’s hard to argue with the simplicity of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A percolator is a simple tool. To use one, you fill water to the desired level, set the tube into the water, place the basket on the tube, fill it with ground coffee corresponding to the amount of water in the pot, put the lid on the basket, put the lid on the percolator, then apply heat. Of course, whether that heat comes from a stovetop, an induction cooktop , a fire, or an electrical outlet will depend on the percolator. Once the water boils, the coffee-making begins, and you watch the water rising in the lid’s glass dome to judge its strength. Electric models frequently have a pre-set brew time, leaving the observational judgment out of the equation.

Cleaning a percolator is the easiest and messiest part of using one. First, allow the percolator to cool because everything inside is hot from having boiling water coursing over or through it. Then extract the inner pieces and dump the grounds, which will still be hot, so use a little caution. No, seriously, coffee grounds have exceptional insulating properties and stay hot for quite a while. Without fail, grounds will stick in the basket, and you can either wipe them or rinse them out, provided your sink will withstand them going down the drain. From there, you can hand wash the pot and components or run them through the dishwasher if the manufacturer says it's safe to do so.

Whether electric or stovetop, percolators generally work in the same way. There’s a pot, for lack of a better description, that holds water. A straw-like stem, which sits on a semi-conical base and rises almost to the height of the percolator, goes into the water. A basket with a perforated cover sits on top of that tube, and the grounds go in the basket. The pot gets heated via an electric heating element or the stovetop, and after it boils, it shoots up the tube.

As the water exits the tube, it bounces off a glass dome in the percolator’s lid. As the water falls out of the dome, it filters through the perforated lid on the grounds basket, then filters, or percolates, down through the grounds, infusing with the coffee as it travels.

When the infused water, now weak coffee, gets back to the pot, it heats again, travels up the tube, and percolates again. This recirculation builds the coffee’s intensity and strength until it reaches the desired level of doneness, and the user takes it off the stove, or, in the case of electric models, the pre-determined brew cycle finishes.

According to Raub, the short answer is pressure. A moka pot is a sealed chamber that heats water from below, and the pressure pushes the water up over the grounds and out the spout. While it doesn’t build enough pressure to make classic espresso, it makes espresso-like coffee that’s close enough to the real thing for most people. A percolator relies on boiling water. Since the percolator isn’t a pressure-sealed vessel, it depends on the pressure from boiling water to force itself up the tube to start brewing. The water infuses and recirculates until reaching the desired strength level.

Strong Contenders

GSI Outdoors 8-Cup Glacier Stainless Steel Percolator ($55 at Amazon )

The GSI Outoors is marketed as a camping percolator, so it’s even more bare-bones than some of the other models we tested. Unfortunately, the handle got quite hot, and the hinge on the lid broke during testing. A better handle design and tougher hinge would move this percolator up the list.

Cuisinart Classic 12-Cup Stainless Steel Percolator ($80 at Amazon )

The Cuisinart scored very well in our testing, and we had to split hairs for the Best Electric title in our ratings. This percolator only missed out because some of the coffee’s nuances were absent after brewing. It’s the definition of a strong contender.

Mixpresso 10-Cup Electric Percolator Coffee Pot ($48 at Amazon )

The Mixpresso rated very well, with cleaning as its only downside, for which we’re being very nitpicky. The biggest complaint was a stubborn brown ring in the bottom of the percolator we couldn’t scrub out.

Presto 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffee Maker ($68 at Amazon )

The Presto is another high-scoring percolator, but it has one drawback. We expect a stovetop model to get hot, but the electric Presto’s outside reached 160°F, which presents safety issues when sitting on a countertop.

Hamilton Beach 12-Cup Electric Percolator Coffee Maker ($53 at Amazon )

The Hamilton Beach similarly scored extremely well, and we had to get very picky about its scoring. The interior components could have been easier to clean or not require periodic special processes like cleaning with vinegar.

Stanley The Cool-Grip Camp Percolator ($31 at Stanley )

The instructions for the Cool-Grip were very vague, leading to a trial-and-error process for this otherwise highly-rated model.

What Didn't Make the List

Testing 20 models, not all score high enough for us to recommend. The bar was high, with our Top Picks scoring almost perfectly across the board, magnifying any minor transgressions and shining a spotlight on major ones. The Stansport 9-Cup Aluminum Percolator Coffee Pot ($19 at Amazon ) had a seemingly flimsy construction, a handle that got too hot on the stovetop to hold, and allowed grounds into the final cup. The construction of the Capresso Perk 8-Cup Coffee Maker ($70 at Amazon ) gave us a similar impression as the Stansport, but it had a better handle. Unfortunately, consistently made weak, flavorless coffee compared to testing the same beans via other methods.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
