6 Best Ways How To Get From Phuket To Krabi?

Thailand Travel Essentials

When I have to pick the transport for the planned route, I look at two things. Will I see new places and meet new people and what will be the cost of it. So let’s take a look at what options do we have if we want to travel from Phuket to Krabi and back.

What are the 6 best ways how to get from Phuket to Krabi?

  • By ferry from Rassada pier in Phuket to Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi
  • By bus from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Krabi Bus Terminal
  • By minibus from your hotel
  • By private speedboat
  • By rental car

Of course, there are other options like cycling or hitchhiking but I will exclude both of these because cycling in Thailand will be too dangerous and locals are not familiar with the idea of hitchhiking.

Now as we’re aware of the traveling options from Phuket to Krabi lets take a closer look and compare each of them.

Get From Phuket To Krabi By Ferry

When planning your trip from Phuket to Krabi by ferry, you should know that ferry on its way to Krabi makes a stop at Ao Nang Beach.

I would recommend staying in Ao Nang over the Krabi. I will write a separate article and explain why.

As I have already mentioned it ferry from Phuket leaves at Rassada Pier. In high season it is recommended to be there early to avoid long lines and to get the best seats.

We had the ferry from Phuket to Krabi in September which is low season. It was almost empty, and it was easy to walk around. We took pictures outside for as long as we wanted. Then we went downstairs to get the coffee and then back to ferry front deck where we enjoyed it.

Ferry from Phuket to Krabi

How much does the ferry cost from Phuket to Krabi?

The price for the ferry from Phuket to Krabi for adults is THB 690 (USD 21,68 or EUR 19,10) per person. For kids, it is THB 490 (USD 15,40 or EUR 13,57).

The price also includes minibus transfer from your hotel to Rassada Pier and from Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi to your new hotel.

Note that these transfers are okay from touristy places in Phuket like Patong Beach or Kata Beach, but more distant areas like Rawai Beach might be a problem. You have to make sure that transfer will be able to pick you up in the morning.

In my case, I bought the ferry ticket in Kata Beach, but as I was staying in Rawai Beach, I had to book the taxi in advance with the help of my hotel. That cost me extra THB 600 (USD 18,86 or EUR 16,61) to get from Rawai Beach to Rassada Pier in Phuket.

One more thing. There is only one ferry per der from Phuket to Krabi, and it leaves at 8:30 AM so you will have to wake up early.

How long is the ferry ride from Phuket to Krabi?

The ferry ride from Phuket to Krabi is 2 hours and 45 minutes long.

If the weather is nice, I believe it is the best way how to get from Phuket to Krabi.

Once you get closer to Ao Nang and Krabi, you will see many small and beautiful islands all around you. Have a camera with good zoom and stabilizer, and you will be able to make some awesome pictures.

Note that the ferry ride probably will be the smoothest ride among other options as speedboat might be quite bumpy, and the Thai roads aren’t the best as well.

Where to buy ferry tickets from Phuket to Krabi?

There are several options but I would like to highlight only one, and that is buying the ferry ticket at any travel agency in Phuket. So anywhere in Phuket Town, Patong Beach, Karon Beach, etc.

I suggest this because then you will also get the transfer from your place of staying to the Rassada Pier in Phuket. As ferry is leaving only at 8:30 AM it makes it a perfect option.

But you can also buy the ferry ticket online or at the Rassada Pier in Phuket.

Speedboat From Phuket To Krabi

I suggest choosing speedboats for island hopping tours only. This way you will spend less time on the boat, and you will have more time to spend on beautiful islands in Phuket.

So, how to get from Phuket to Krabi by speedboat?

First of all, there are private tours only.

The idea is simple. With more travelers, the speedboat gets cheaper.

The total one-way price for the speedboat that has space for six passengers will be about THB 14 000 (USD 440,27 or EUR 387,65).

So if you are six travelers, you will have to pay THB 2 333 (USD 73,39 or EUR 64,58) each to get from Phuket to Krabi by speedboat.

It is almost five times more expensive than the ferry, but there is an even cheaper alternative.

If you would be a group of 15 travelers you could hire the speedboat with space for 15 passengers. In this case, the ride from Phuket to Krabi would cost only THB 1400 (USD 44,03 or EUR 38,75) per person.

And if you are a good negotiator, the price could get even more attractive.

If you choose the speedboat over other options, I believe it will be possible to negotiate to stop at random islands on the way to Krabi.

Speedboat from Phuket to Krabi

From Phuket To Krabi By Bus

It probably will be the second or maybe even the first choice for most of the travelers because you can not get seasick on the bus 🙂

Where to buy the bus ticket from Phuket to Krabi?

The only place where to get bus ticket is in the Phuket Bus Terminal 2 or in the bus itself.

The ticket will cost you THB 117 (USD 3,68 or EUR 3,24) for a regular government licensed bus.

The bus ride from Phuket Town to Krabi Town will take about 3 hours, and in Krabi, you will finish your trip in Krabi Bus Terminal.

In early morning buses from Phuket to Krabi leave every 30 minutes.

Bus from Phuket to Krabi is going past the Phuket airport. So you might want to check the map for options getting onto the bus at some place close to you.

From Phuket To Krabi By Minibus

The best thing about minibus is that it will pick you up from your hotel.

Minibus with nine seats in it will cost you starting from THB 3 200 (USD 100 or EUR 88,60).

To book one ask at your hotel reception or you could book online.

I’ve driven minibusses in Thailand quite a lot, and I’ve noticed that Thai drivers like loud music so be prepared for two hours long party 🙂

Taxi from Phuket To Krabi

Taxi is similar to the minibus. Only, in this case, it is cheaper. It will cost you starting from THB 2 500 (USD 78,65 or EUR 69,19) to get to Krabi.

Booking a taxi at your hotel almost always will be more expensive than catching a taxi on the street. It is because most hotels have their flat rates for taxi rides to the most popular tourist destinations. And of course, these rates include a commission for the hotel.

I already mentioned booking a taxi with the help of my hotel from Rawai Beach to Rassada Pier in Phuket. That ride cost me THB 600 (USD 18,89 or EUR 16,61) which I find quite expensive, but I had no other options.

I am not sure that taxi drivers from the street will agree to drive you to Krabi. I doubt it because drivers booked through the hotel are more like private drivers. Their cars have no stickers or signs that would indicate that this is a taxi.

From Phuket To Krabi By Rental Car

The last one is the option to rent a car at Phuket airport and drive it to the Krabi airport.

I have to admit that I haven’t driven a car in Thailand and therefore I can not say anything specific about this option but it sounds good enough and you might want to consider it.

I checked a couple of car rental websites and seemed like it will cost you about THB 1 400 (USD 44 or EUR 38,70) to rent a car in Phuket for one day.

Related Questions

Can you buy ferry tickets at Rassada Pier? Yes, you can, but you should be aware that purchasing ferry tickets at Rassada Pier might be more expensive than buying tickets elsewhere. It is because taxi drivers and other services get a commission from getting you to the pier.

Phuket to Krabi

Phuket to Krabi

Best options, other options, how to get from phuket to krabi.

Two of the most popular destinations of the Andaman, Phuket and Krabi are connected by numerous buses and boats plying the route any time of the day. The road distance from Phuket to Krabi is 170 km, but the bus journey takes no less than three hours. Buses pass via Phang Nga, the most underrated sea province of the Andaman Coast. Ferry from Phuket to Krabi may call to Koh Phi Phi first or pass between Koh Phi Phi and Koh Yao Yai heading directly to Ao Nang or Khlong Jilard pier in Krabi. The former take up to four hours to bring you to Krabi; the latter need just half that time. Note that the Andaman Sea is often rough – if you suffer from seasickness, choose the fastest ferry or go by bus.

When people say they are going to Krabi they very seldom plan to stay in Krabi Town proper – what is a real pity, to tell you the truth. With an abundance of natural attractions like crystal clear rivers in the mangrove forest or emerald pool, several worth visiting temples among which Wat Tham Suea commanding the views north of town being the number one and several less known natural wonders like Shell Cemetery, Khlong Hin Kwang or an absolute stunner Khao Ngon Nak within an easy reach from town, Krabi deserves a closer look. Add to this a great choice of budget accommodation and surprisingly decent cafe and restaurant scene – and try to squeeze a couple of days in Krabi Town proper into your Krabi beach life itinerary.

Getting around in Krabi

The streets of Krabi Town can be negotiated on foot. But with the main attractions scattered beyond the town limits, you will have either to rent your own transport or to join a tour.

If walking is not your thing, songthaews are a cheap and convenient way to get around the city, as well as to Ao Nang and Krabi airport (THB50-THB100 per person in a shared vehicle depending on the route). If you want to have the whole vehicle for yourself, discuss the price before the trip.

Both bicycles and motorbikes are a great way to explore Krabi. Almost all the guesthouses in Krabi Town and Ao Nang have their fleet of vehicles for rent. Daily rates for motorbikes fluctuate between THB150 and THB300. Traffic tends to be not so chaotic and intense outside Ao Nang and several central streets in Krabi Town, and the countryside setting is absolutely magnificent – with slender hevea trees dropping precious tears of future latex foam from the cuts in their trunks to small cup attached; with beautiful mighty oil palms flaming with bright orange and red berries; with tiny tidy villages with Buddhist temples giving the way to mosques; and ghostly silhouettes of karst hills in the horizon.

Which beach in Krabi to choose

With some of the most beautiful Thai islands with pristine (or sometimes not-so-pristine) beaches within an easy reach, it is quite possible to miss what the mainland beaches around Krabi Town have on offer. In the mean time all of them have their own character and charm and while the two star mainland beach destinations of Ao Nang and Railey Beach are totally commercialized and have lost their ‘beach’ appeal to a certain extent, there are still good stretches of sand to consider.

To get a great family holiday – a fancy resort, friendly service, beautiful setting – have a look at Khlong Muang Beach , 20 km further along the coast from Ao Nang.

To enjoy a low-key vibe right by the side of the tourist-crazy Ao Nang, head to Noppharat Thara Beach .

To get away from it all, walk along the spectacular unpeopled beach and marvel dramatic sunsets on the background of the jaw-dropping views of Koh Hong island, consider Tub Kaek Beach, further north from Khlong Muang Beach .

Railey Beach , which once was the most well kept Krabi secret, is still stunning, though the influx the hordes of tourists produce will sooner or later put it at the same catastrophic edge at what Koh Phi Phi find themselves at the moment.

Ao Nang , a perennial package tourist favourite, is not as bad as it sounds. The beach is beautiful and a great choice of accommodation, restaurants and tours on offer combined with rather affordable prices can make you stay longer than you have expected to do.

Your onward travel from Krabi

Krabi is a convenient starting point for any travel further south down the Andaman Coast to Trang and the [Trang islands](/en/travel /trang/koh-libong) as well as to Koh Lanta (take a special note of private transfer service from Krabi to Koh Lanta by Andaman Taxis at THB1800 for a minivan which is a real deal).

Wish you travel to Bangkok , you can choose between direct buses (12 hours, from THB650) and cheap flights operated by several low-cost airlines including Lion Air and Air Asia with over a dozen departures throughout the day.

To jump over to the Gulf coast, pass via Suratthani (4 hours, from THB250), where you will be able to catch a ferry to the islands of the Gulf – Koh Samui , Koh Phangan and Koh Tao or proceed from Suratthani to Bangkok by train (10–12 hours; from THB750).

How to get from Phuket to Krabi Town (and vice versa)

Phuket and Krabi are the two most visited places in Southern Thailand. So there’s a good chance that you will want to travel between these two hubs at some point during your travels. You have basically three different travel options (unless you want to drive there by yourself, but then you probably wouldn’t read this post) and it’s all relatively easy, quick and stress-free.

The total distance from Phuket Town to Krabi Town is 165km (from bus terminal to bus terminal), and depending on the type of vehicle it will take you between 2 and 3 hours . Of course it also depends on the traffic situation – not so much in Krabi but more on Phuket Island, especially the first part of the trip along the Main Road 402 until you pass the Sarasin Bridge that connects the island with the mainland.

The trip is one of the most beautiful in all of Thailand. It’s not like up in Isaan where you look out of the window and see only rice paddies and buffalos for hours, but here you will pass all these huge limestone cliffs – the most special one is probably the Elephant Hill in Phang Nga .

So here we go, these are your different travel options between Phuket and Krabi:

Phuket to Krabi Town

Phuket Town Bus Terminal 2

The most popular way to get from Phuket to Krabi.

There are busses traveling between the two cities at least once every hour from about 7am to 10pm. Depending on the type of coach (Standard, VIP, First Class etc.) the ticket costs 150-180 Baht , and the trip takes about 2.5 hours .

There’s no need to pre-book your ticket, just show up at the bus terminal and buy it at one of the booths of the bus companies.

  • There are two bus terminals in Phuket. You should go to the Phuket Bus Terminal 2 (the newer one of both which is in the northern part of town). They have more frequent departures and newer coaches.
  • If you stay on the beach like Patong, Kata or Karon, a taxi should bring you there for 100-150 Baht. Coming from Phuket Town, you can just hop on a motorbike taxi that should bring you there for about 60-80 Baht.

If you don’t want to take a taxi to the bus terminal, you can also book a minibus at one of the many travel agents all around Phuket. The advantage is that they will pick you up directly from your hotel, but the disadvantage is that you have less legroom than in the bus, and if you have a lot of luggage you might even have to buy 2 tickets.

The one way fare for the mini busses from Phuket to Krabi Town is about 200-250 Baht if you book your ticket at the travel agencies, and the trip is slightly faster than with the bus – just over 2 hours – because they drive a lot faster.

Phuket Taxi

The taxi is obviously your most convenient travel option, but at the same time also the most expensive one. You can just ask one of the drivers in your beach town in Phuket (there are not so many in Phuket Town) and see if they want to do the trip – not everyone will go as they are not sure if they can find a customer in Krabi to drive back to Phuket.

If you find one who agrees then you can expect to pay between 1,500 and 2,000 Baht and the trip should take about 2 hours . Sure, you can also book your taxi at the travel agencies, but then again you would have to pay them a commission and the price will be around 2,500 Baht. Makes only sense if you share the taxi with two or three other people.

There are no flight connections between Phuket and Krabi.

Krabi town to phuket.

Krabi Town Bus

Busses to Phuket leave frequently (about once every hour) from early in the morning till late in the evening. The ticket price is about 150-180 Baht one way, and the trip takes between 2.5 and 3 hours – yes, just like the other way around.

Most minibuses in Krabi Town leave in riverside at the intersection of Kongkha Rd and Utarakit Rd (see the map below). Of course, you can also book your ticket at one of the many travel agents in riverside. It costs about 250 Baht and the trip takes about 2 hours .

It’s more difficult to find a taxi from Krabi Town to Phuket than from Phuket to Krabi Town. The best idea is to just inquire at one of the travel agencies in riverside, they should be able to arrange one for you for about 2,500 Baht . The trip takes about 2 hours – same like with the minibus.

How about Ferries from Phuket to Krabi?

That’s a good question, but not a good idea. Yes, there are ferries serving the Phuket-Krabi route, but it will take you around 4 hours (1 hour from your hotel in Phuket to the pier and waiting time, about 2.5 hours by boat to Krabi Pier and 30 minutes from the pier to Krabi Town) and cost about 750 Baht . Just stick to the street travel as described above, which is twice as fast and less than a third of the price.

However, if you plan to visit one of the many beautiful islands in the region, such as Koh Phi Phi , then it does make sense to first take the ferry to the island (like Phi Phi), stay there for a couple of nights and then take another ferry to Krabi.

  • You can check the ferry time tables, prices and even book your ticket online on  PhuketFerry.com or YourKrabi.com .

It might not be a good option for you if you tend to feel seasick.

Phuket to Krabi by Ferry/Speedboat (Fastest)

  • Cost: about 800–1,200 THB (US$24–36) p/p
  • Journey time: 2–2½ hours (speedboat); 3-8 hours (ferry)

From Bang Rong Pier (north of Phuket), there are two speedboats to Krabi. They arrive at different piers: one at Nopparat Thara Pier, which is close to Ao Nang Beach, and the other at Floating Pier, which is close to Railay Beach.

The departure time is 9:30am and they take about 2 hours. The sea is often rough. If you suffer from seasickness, traveling by taxi is recommended instead.

From Rassada Pier (south of Phuket), there are ferries to Krabi once a day in the high seasons and three times a week in the low seasons. The direct trip takes about 2½-3 hours.

Another option is stopping over on Phi Phi Island, and then continuing the journey to Krabi later in the day. The whole journey will take 4-8 hours.

Check the sample itineraries for Thailand tours:  Top 5 Thailand Itineraries for 10 Days .

Phuket to Krabi by Taxi (Comfortable)

  • Journey time: 2–2½ hours

Traveling from Phuket to Krabi by taxi is the most flexible and comfortable way. You can choose the pick-up and arrival points.

This is recommended if you'll carry a lot of luggage or have children or elderly people in your group — basically this is the best option for those who are prone to travel sickness.

Some taxis may refuse to use the meter or charge excessive prices. To avoid these problems, we recommend you book a taxi online or ask the hotel to call one for you. Then you will get a reasonable price.

Phuket to Krabi by Bus (Cheapest)

  • Cost: about 2,600 THB ($78) per car (2–3 people)
  • Journey time: 2½ hours

Phuket Bus Terminal 2 has hourly buses to Krabi Bus Terminal daily from 7:30am to 9:30pm. It won't be comfortable, but it could be a good local life experience and a chance to meet locals. Krabi Bus Terminal is 5 km (3 miles) from downtown Krabi.

Another way, shared minivan, is similar to going by bus. Ten seats are available per minivan. It is more convenient than a bus station bus in that it can pick you up from your hotel. However, you need to expect a painful amount of waiting time as the minivan will go from hotel to hotel picking up other passengers. You can purchase tickets from travel agents on the streets or at hotels.

What is the most recommended way to travel from Phuket to Krabi?

Speedboat and taxi are the two recommended ways. What will be best for you depends on your destination in Krabi.

If you book a hotel in Krabi near Ao Nang or Railay beach, which have speedboat piers, a speedboat would be fast and convenient.

If your destination is in/near Krabi town, or you fancy a comfortable and flexible journey, taxi would be the best choice.

You could choose a private tour with private transfers for zero-hassle, relaxing journeys.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

How to go from Phuket to Krabi

travel phuket to krabi

These two much-loved beach towns face each other on opposite ends of famous Phang Nga Bay. It’s hardly a wonder they are among the most popular destinations in Thailand. The whole region is speckled with islands where cotton-coloured beaches dash under lazy palm trees and dramatic mountains lurch from cerulean seas. To the east is Krabi, with Ao Nang’s lux hotels and the rock-climbing mecca of Railay. To the west, Phuket beckons with pumping Patong and the villa-speckled sands of Karon.

Covering the 37 miles (60 km) that separates one from the other should be a breeze. Boats, buses, and taxis all run the route from Phuket to Krabi, with a whole range of prices and comfort levels on offer. Let’s take a look…

Phuket to Krabi by normal ferry

Phuket to Krabi by normal ferry

Time – Up to 8 hours Price – $20 Comfort – 4/5

If you drew a direct line from Phuket to Krabi, it would cut right across Phag Nga Bay. That’s the route the ferries take, and boy is it a pretty one! From the talcum-powder beaches of Koh Yao Noi to the sheer cliffs of the Phi Phi islands, there’s plenty to keep you gasping and snapping photos along the way. That’s good news, too, because the journey can take up to eight hours in total.

The reason for the long trip? You’ll need to make a change of boat at the port in Koh Phi Phi itself. Ferries leave Rassada Pier on the south-eastern edge of Phuket come the morning, arriving in Phi Phi around midday. You can either linger on the jetties or go kick back on Tonsai Beach that’s just next door. That’s a great way to break up longer layovers but will mean paying the 400 THB entry fee to the island.

Tonsai Pier

Boats might not be the fastest way to go between Phuket and Krabi but they sure do offer some awesome views of the region’s island and tropical coast.

There’s plenty of choice when it comes to boats out of Phuket itself for that first leg, but we’d recommend sticking with Chaokoh Travel Center. It’s possible to book connecting tickets with them on 12Go.asia that will take you all the way through to Krabi. They also run double-decker vessels with open-air spaces up top for island watching as you sail.

Departures to Krabi from Phi Phi go at 1.30pm and 3.30pm, which means you can expect to pull into Krabi Town late in the afternoon or the early evening. Your arrival point will be Klong Jilad Pier. There, taxis, shared minivans, and even local songthaew shuttles offer further links to Krabi Town center. Alternatively, you can catch the Krabi ferry from Phi Phi that goes direct to Ao Nang Beach – Krabi’s main hotel resort.

Phuket to Krabi by speedboat

Phuket to Krabi by speedboat

Time – 2.5 hours Price – $37 Comfort – 3/5

The folk over at Koh Yao Sun Smile run a regular speedboat link that goes straight from Phuket to Krabi. It’s among the fastest options for crossing the water, with a travel time in the region of only 2.5 hours from dock to dock. There’s typically a single departure each day. It leaves at 9.30am from the Bang Rong Pier on the north-western edge of Phuket island, which is a super-convenient spot for those jetting into the local airport – the terminals are a quick 25-minute drive away.

Speedboats are a contender for the fastest rides of all across the water from Phuket to Krabi.

The trip itself isn’t the slow and scenic odyssey you can expect on the larger boats. It’s high-octane, adrenaline-pumping stuff on the speedboats. In fact, travelers who are prone to seasickness, bringing lots of luggage in tow, or wanting to take in the views as they sail should steer clear of this mode of transport. There’s not too much room on board, and rides are infamous for getting bumpy.

Pre Book a Speedboat on the Phuket Krabi Route

We’d recommend booking ahead of time if you’re set on catching the speedboat link between Phuket and Krabi . Because these nippy vessels can’t carry more than 20-30 people on average, it’s important to secure a seat before they all get snapped up, particularly for holidays between November and March. To do that, head over to 12Go.asia and get a-booking. Just be ready to pay a premium when compared to the slower ferry connections.

Phuket to Krabi by shared minivan

Phuket to Krabi by shared minivan

Time – 3.5 to 4 hours Price – $20-25 Comfort – 4/5

Departures From Phuket Airport

An economical and fast way to navigate your way around the southern Thailand coast from Phuket to Krabi is to choose the shared minivan. Run by Krabi Airport Shuttle, they take around 3.5-4 hours to complete the trip. The standard pickup point is at Phuket Airport, which is great news if you’re looking to waltz off a plane from Bangkok and make straight for Krabi’s beautiful beaches. If you’re traveling from a hotel or a resort, it’s also possible to book rides with a transfer from your hotel in a single ticket using 12Go .

Shared minivans drive the whole way around the coast to Krabi from Phuket, taking approximately four hours from start to finish.

The shared minivan from Phuket to Krabi is a popular choice because it takes way less time than the ferries. There’s no need for a stopover on Koh Phi Phi here, just a one-way ticket to ride from west to east. The roads are well-maintained for the whole route to boot. First, you’ll follow the 402 up the middle of Phuket island and then cross to the mainland. From there, highway 4 weaves through the countryside’s rubber plantations and jungle-topped karst mountains all the way to central Krabi.

All vehicles are air conditioned and can carry up to nine passengers. One drawback is that you might need to make some stops at the hotels in Ao Nang or Krabi Town to drop everyone off once you’ve arrived. On the flip side, that also means you’ll get transported right to the door of your next stay.

Phuket to Krabi by private taxi

Phuket to Krabi by private taxi

Time – Around 3 hours Price – $85+ Comfort – 5/5

You’ll probably need to fork out over $80 to move from Phuket’s buzzing go-go bars to the beachside massage parlours of Krabi in your own ride. That might seem like a lot, but there are things worth remembering. First: That’s the rate for the whole vehicle. In groups of four, that’s just $20 apiece – the same cost as a ferry or a shared minivan is per person. Second: Private taxis take comfort levels to new heights. Things like air-con interiors, free water and upholstered seats usually come as standard.

Adding to all that is the convenience of being collected and dropped off wherever you choose. Oh, and taxis take a little less time to whiz through the jungles and the mangrove forests to reach Krabi. Without stops to make or other travelers to wait for, you’ll be able to go from A to B in under three hours, traffic depending. With a driving distance of 99 miles (160 km), that’s cracking news if you’re simply pining to dip your feet in the crystal-clear waters of Railay Beach or Ao Nang!

Phuket to Krabi by local bus

Phuket to Krabi by local bus

Time – 3.5 hours Price – under $5 Comfort – 3/5

Go local, save plenty – that’s the mantra on the route from Phuket to Krabi. Cue the local buses, which can whisk you off Thailand’s largest isle and put you in the midst of the salt-scented fish markets of Krabi in as little as 3.5 hours. They leave from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 several times throughout the day. Early departures start about 7am, with the latest possible leaving town around 10pm.

Don’t come expecting limo levels of comfort. These are shared, big buses that are used by both Thai commuters and international travelers. There’s often competition for room, the air conditioning might not be the best, and the seats are nowhere near as plush as in private taxis. Balancing that out is the price. This is by far the cheapest way to get from Phuket to Krabi Bus Station. A handful of dollars is all you’ll need to buy your ticket from the booth in the station!

Going from Phuket to Krabi can be a real adventure. Take the boats via Koh Phi Phi and you’ll glimpse one of the iconic islands of the Andaman Sea along the way, with its cream-coloured beachfronts and rickety sunset bars. Go by road and it’s about navigating jungles, rubber plantations, and wild karst mountains. Excited?

Phuket to Krabi FAQ

That’s got to be the local bus. It trumps the lot on the price front with tickets that cost less than $5 a pop. What’s more, journey times stay roughly the same as on the minivan, with total travels taking about three hours. The only downside is the comfort. These are public transport links, which can get busy and hot. Still, so what? The refreshing waters of Ao Nang Beach await on the far side.

Get onto 12Go.asia and score yourself a seat on one of the uber-quick speedboats if you’re looking to get from Phuket to Krabi as fast as possible. Travel times can break the 2.5-hour barrier on those. The route whisks you straight across the water to piers in Ao Nang and Krabi Town. The departure point is at Bang Rong, just 25 minutes’ drive from Phuket Airport.

The choice is yours. One way is to go by sea. That’s a real adventure, but it will take some time. Expect trips to be around eight hours as you weave through tropical islands to change on the docks of Koh Phi Phi. Alternatively, there’s the heart-thumping speedboat, which costs more but arrives in under 2.5 hours. Faster on-land options include the shared minivan and private taxis. They follow the main road around the top of the Andaman Sea to Krabi. Both can be booked in advance with 12Go.asia .

The best way is to organise a private transfer using 12Go.asia . Providers like BangkokTaxi24 and Andaman Taxis will have a driver ready and waiting for you as you emerge from the arrival hall. Easy. To keep things a little cheaper, you could hop onto one of the shared minivans and opt for an airport pickup. Or, travel from the terminals to the Phuket bus station and then connect to the local coaches bound for Krabi there.

The regular boats between Phuket and Krabi tend to run on island time. In other words – they’re not the fastest! In fact, trips from pier to pier on this route can be as long as eight hours or more. The reason for that isn’t so much the time it takes to cross the Andaman Sea, but rather the lack of direct ferries. On the flip side, there’s always the speedboat. It leaves once a day and smashes the trip in less than 2.5 hours. Just don’t expect the most comfortable ride!

Prices vary from company to company, but you’re likely to pay in the region of $20 for a ticket on the normal-speed boats that go from Phuket to Krabi. The best way to book them is via 12Go.asia . Doing that will ensure you have all the right connections to the right ferries as you pass through Koh Phi Phi along the way. It’s also a great way to beat the crowd to the best departure times during the high season. For faster connections on speedboats, you’re looking at about $37 or more per person each way.

You can either grab your own minibus ride in a shared car or go with the local bus. The first guarantees a little extra comfort and will often come with a pickup at your nominated point on the island. The second is way cheaper (tickets are priced at just under $5!). However, it might take a little longer and will only leave from the Phuket bus terminal near Phuket Town.

4 ways to get from Krabi to Phuket

Where to stay in phuket.

Still looking for accommodation? Don't forget to check out our favourite places to stay in Phuket at the bottom of this page.

Krabi to Phuket by Bus

Travelling to Phuket from Krabi is cheaper by bus or minivan. Costs start from 300 THB ($8.20) for a bus ride that takes around 3h - 3h 30m.

When taking the bus, you can choose between two companies: Good Luck Lanta Tour and Minibus 1996.

Departure and arrival station

All buses depart from Krabi Bus Terminal , about 10 minutes from Krabi town. You can also be picked up from Krabi Airport .

Good Luck Lanta makes its last stop at Phuket Bus Terminal 1 , while Minibus 1996 parks at Phuket Bus Terminal 2 .

From Bus Terminal 1, you can take a direct songthaew to Patong for around 60 THB ($1.60). If you’re coming from Terminal 2, you will first have to take one of the pink songthaews to Terminal 1. This costs around 15 THB ($0.40).

You can also opt to spend a little extra and take a taxi to your hotel. There are plenty of metered taxis in Phuket, so hailing one on the street shouldn’t be a problem, although it might be a bit expensive. Be sure to agree with the driver on a flat rate or to run the meter prior to departure.

Bus schedule from Krabi to Phuket

Pre-pandemic, there were also local buses at Krabi Bus Terminal that could take you to Phuket. These local buses departed every 30 minutes from 06:20 to 17:00. Tickets were 150 THB ($4.10) and could only be bought at the bus station.

The last time we checked (September 2023), though, we couldn’t confirm if the public bus was still available. If you have any info on this public bus, we would love to hear about it in a comment below!

Alternative: Shared minivans from Krabi to Phuket

The minivans from Krabi to Phuket offer more trips per day than the bus. Fares start from 260 THB ($7.10), and travel time is around 3.5 hours, depending on which van you take and where you’re coming from in Krabi.

Keep in mind that because of the limited space in the minivan, you can only bring small pieces of luggage with you.

Same as the bus, Phuket Krabi Transport departs from Krabi Terminal and heads to Phuket Bus Terminal 1. On the other hand, Krabi Sea Pearl offers hotel pick-up in Krabi town and Ao Nang and arrives at Phuket Bus Terminal 2.

Want to explore more? Before going to Phuket, you can have a side trip first to Koh Lanta , which is just a 2-hour minivan ride from Krabi. You can check out our guide on Koh Lanta to Phuket for more info.

Krabi to Phuket by Ferry or Speedboat

It’s no surprise that the ferry is the most preferred option for tourists. During the ride, you’ll be entertained with marvellous coastal views between Krabi and Phuket.

This sea journey takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours and ticket prices start from 450 THB ($12.30). Unfortunately, there are only a few trips daily, so we recommend planning and booking in advance.

Speedboat or Ferry from Krabi to Phuket?

Both ferries and speedboats are available on the Krabi to Phuket route. Ferries are bigger, slower and cheaper, the better choice if you’re prone to motion sickness or if you’re travelling in the rainy season from June to October. Ao Nang Princess offers two ferry trips daily — one from Nopparat Thara Pier and the other from East Railay.

If you prefer to travel fast and don’t mind spending more, you can take a pricier speedboat. Koh Yao Sun Smile and Green Planet operate speedboats to Phuket from Krabi.

Departure ports in Krabi

Boats operating from Krabi to Phuket depart from two ports: Nopparat Thara Pier and East Railay . You can choose your departure point depending on your hotel’s location in Krabi.

Ferry schedule from Nopparat Thara Pier, Krabi to Phuket

Ferry schedule from floating pier east railay, krabi to phuket, arrival ports in phuket.

In Phuket, there are two arrival ports: Rassada Pier on the southeast coast and Bang Rong Pier on the north.

Rassada Pier is the closest to most tourist destinations on the island — 4 km away from Phuket Old Town and 16 km away from Patong Beach. Only Ao Nang Princess docks at Rassada Pier .

From Rassada, you can take a taxi to your hotel. Prices start from 950 THB ($26) if you book online via 12go.Asia . There are also shared minivans waiting at the port. Vans are cheaper, but they make several stops to drop off passengers along the way so travel time is longer.

Are you heading to Phuket’s more laidback northern coast? If so, it will be better to take a speedboat that arrives at Bang Rong Pier. Both Koh Yao Sun Smile and Green Planet dock at this port. You can get a taxi at the port or you can ask your hotel beforehand to be picked up.

Alternative: Krabi to Phuket by Combined Van + Ferry

If you don’t want the hassle of getting your own transfer to and from the ports, you can also just book a combined van and ferry ride from Krabi to Phuket.

This way, the tour operator will take care of all your transfers: a shared van from your hotel in Krabi to the port, a boat ride from Krabi to Phuket, and then a shared van from the pier to your hotel in Phuket. Prices for a combined van and ferry start from 600 THB ($16.40).

Green Planet Speedboat provides door-to-door services from Krabi town centre to Phuket city centre.

Ao Nang, on the other hand, also picks you up from the centre of Krabi, but takes you to Phuket’s southern coast at Nai Harn Beach, some 40 minutes away from Patong.

Heading to the Phi Phi Islands?

If you want to travel from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi, we’ve got good news for you! The ocean between Krabi and Koh Phi Phi can be crossed within one hour if you book a speedboat ferry. If you want to travel with a larger ferry, travel time takes 3 hours. See below the schedules for some of the companies operating on this route:

Keep in mind that there are several ferry departure ports in Krabi as well as arrival piers in Phuket. When booking your ferry ride, double-check these details so that you can depart and arrive at the nearest ports to your hotels.

TIP: When travelling from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi, there are a few companies that offer hotel pick-up service at your hotel in Ao Nang or Krabi Town if you book with 12GoAsia . Check the Taxi + Ferry option to see which companies offer pick-up services in your area.

Krabi to Phuket by Indirect Flight

Phuket and Krabi sit just across each other and are separated only by the Andaman Sea. However, there are no direct flights from Krabi to Phuket. All flights between the two towns make a stop in Bangkok.

The flight itself takes at least 4.5 hours. When you add the transfers to and from the airports, travel time takes around 6h 30m - 8h.

And with combined costs starting from 2,650 THB ($73), we don’t think it’s worth taking a flight to Phuket from Krabi. But if you really prefer to fly, we give you a step-by-step guide below.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

Step 1: Krabi Town to Krabi Airport by Airport Shuttle

There are 4 ways you can get from Krabi Town (or Ao Nang) to Krabi Airport: by songthaew for 50 THB ($1.40), by shared minivan for 150 THB ($4.10), by airport shuttle bus for 150 THB ($4.10), and by private transfer with rates from 540 THB ($14.80).

You can find songthaews, shared minivans and airport buses at the public bus stop in Krabi Town and at the transfer station in Ao Nang. It’s important to note that these shared modes of transport make a lot of stops. We don’t suggest these options if you don’t have a lot of time before your flight.

When you’re short on time or travelling in a group, you can also just take a private transfer. Prices for a 9-seater car start from 540 THB ($14.80) from Krabi Town and 670 THB ($18.30) from Ao Nang. You can book your ride beforehand through BookAway .

Travel time by shared transport to Krabi Airport is around 40-50 minutes from Krabi Town and about 1 hour from Ao Nang. Taking a private transfer is faster: 30 minutes from Krabi Town and 50 minutes from Ao Nang.

Step 2: Krabi Airport to Phuket Airport by Flight

Thai Airways, Air Asia, Bangkok Airways and Vietjet Air offer indirect flights from Krabi to Phuket daily. These flights make a stop at either  Don Mueang Airport  or  Suvarnabhumi Airport  in Bangkok.

Depending on the layover in Bangkok, the flight time from Krabi to Phuket takes at least 4.5 hours.

Airfares range between 2,500 THB ($68) and 4,000 THB ($110).

Step 3: Phuket Airport to Phuket Town by Bus

From Phuket Airport, you have several options when travelling to Phuket Town:

  • Airport bus to Phuket Town (1.5 hours) – 160 THB ($4.40)
  • Shuttle bus to the western beach destinations (1-2 hours) – 100 THB ($2.70)
  • Shared minivan to your hotel (1-1.5 hours) – 200 THB ($5.50)
  • Taxi to your hotel (30-60 minutes) – 600 THB ($16.40)

Your choice of transport really depends on where you’re headed in Phuket. Check out our page on Phuket Airport for a detailed guide.

Krabi to Phuket by Taxi

If you prefer a door-to-door transfer, it will be easier to book a private transfer from Krabi to Phuket. When travelling in a big group, this is often cheaper than taking the ferry. There’s just one downside: you’re going to miss the scenic ferry ride through the Andaman Sea.

A benefit of booking a taxi or private transport is that you don’t have to take into account the ferry schedule and don’t need to arrange transportation to and from your hotel and the ferry ports.

Fares start from 2,530 THB ($69) for a minivan that can fit up to 8 passengers.

Hailing a taxi from the street is often more expensive. Also, there are not many taxis in Krabi so we suggest booking in advance. This can be done through your hotel, a local travel agency, or our preferred booking platform, BookAway .

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PHUKET

The most ideal time to plan your trip to Phuket is during the months of November, through to and including February. Throughout this period of time the climate is more pleasant, allowing you to really enjoy your time on the island. Temperatures stay between 25-30 degrees, and any monsoon weather is blocked by the mainland of Thailand, meaning there are always blue skies to relax under, a slight breeze to keep cool and the least amount of rainfall to not get in the way of exploring around the island.

HOW LONG TO VISIT PHUKET FOR

For you to really experience all that the island has to offer and to make sure that you fit in everything on your Phuket bucket list, 10 days is a great amount of time, and if you can push to 2 whole weeks then that’s even better. Also, within this amount of time you will be able to move to different locations around the island which is going to provide you with an even better insight into the culture, experiences and landmarks. It is possible to still enjoy this paradise within 5-7 days but there is a chance that you won’t be able to squeeze in all of the must-do activities.

Aerial View From Kata Karon

THINGS TO DO IN PHUKET

Visit The Phuket Big Buddha This famous landmark stands at 45 metres tall and sits on the Nakkerd Hills. From here you will also be able to see a great panoramic view of the island whilst being in awe of this giant masterpiece. The atmosphere that surrounds the Big Buddha brings a calm feeling to those within its presence. Whilst the area is very quiet you will be able to hear dharma music and small bells chiming.

Walk up to the Karon View Point At this spot you will have a magnificent view overlooking the Andaman Sea from one side, and the three west coast beaches on the other. The viewpoint is situated just South of Kata Noi Beach, and from here you can take a short 25 minute walk down to the golden sands and turquoise waters, making it a great day spent exploring and relaxing.

Check out the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery Here you will be able to taste the flavours of locally made rum, as well as see the process of how they create it and take part in a cocktail workshop that will teach you how to make an array of specialities with this specific rum. It’s a great way to have a fun yet relaxing day out of the sun whilst learning more about the island and its unique personality.

Take part in a traditional Thai cooking class If you are looking to completely emerge yourself into the Phuket culture, then this is a great activity to do. There are several locations across the island that offer cooking classes that will introduce you to the key ingredients needed to create those mouth-watering Thai flavours.

Admire the Jui Tui Shrine Wrapped in vibrant colours, this breath-taking monument is a trio of statues that each represent a Chinese god. An interesting fact about this beautiful site is that it wasn’t always in the location where it stands today. Many years ago a fire broke out and nearly destroyed this landmark, which is why it was then decided to be moved to a different spot.
