The Best Travel Vloggers on YouTube in 2022

If you’re anything like me, your YouTube home feed includes a lot of travel stories, with food and travel vloggers, around the world explorers, van life channels, and outdoor adventurers.

Watching travel videos helps me decide where to travel next in the world, and what exactly to do once I get there.

In person travel around the world is difficult with the pandemic right now, so I’ve loved watching travel adventures virtually from my favorite YouTubers. It’s a wonderful way to mentally escape the stress and uncertainty of the last year.

YouTube has more than 2 billion (yes, that’s billion with a b ) monthly logged in users. If you’re a prospective travel vlogger, getting your videos on YouTube can be as easy as filming a video, editing with a video editor , and uploading. Because getting started on YouTube can be so simple, that’s meant plenty of vloggers, with interesting stories to tell, are on the platform.

Many of my favorite vloggers introduce viewers to bucket list travel adventures around the world, while others stay closer to home.

Several travel bloggers on this list, like Kara and Nate, made the transition from around-the-word travel videos to van life during the pandemic. Others have bought and renovated isolated cabins, while others continue their adventures locally.

I enjoy watching their current adventures, but it’s also a great time to dig back in the archives and watch older videos. I even check out a few classic travel TV shows from time to time!

The Best Travel YouTube Channels

Kara and Nate 2.1 Million YouTube Subscribers

I just found Kara and Nate’s channel in the last year. It’s fantastic, and I wish I’d found it sooner! Kara and Nate are a husband and wife team from Nashville Tennessee, who traveled to 100 countries before travel slowed down in 2020.

The production quality of this channel is fantastic, with high quality videography, and great audio as well. These days, they’re making content driving through the USA in a van, with plenty of stops at interesting accommodations and attractions along the way.

Eamon and Bec 782K YouTube subscribers

Eamon and Bec are a Canadian couple that I started watching when they were travelling around Europe and Morocco in their self converted Sprinter van. There’s plenty of gorgeous content on here about their travels, their vegan recipes (they even have a vegan cookbook), and life on the road.

These days, Eamon and Bec are vlogging about renovating their cabin in the woods of Ontario, Canada.

Foresty Forest 245K YouTube subscribers

Foresty Forest is the real deal, if you’re interested in bicycle touring, ascending mountains, and the great outdoors. His crockpot makes frequent appearances, with simple home cooked meals made in the van.

This is old school YouTube, without paid sponsorships, or paid reviews.

You’ll find yourself singing the insanely catchy theme song, “ Foresty Forest, he lives in a van… Foresty Forest! “

I always catch myself smiling when there’s a new Foresty Forest upload.

Favorite video: Living in a Minivan During Freezing Temperatures

Christian Schaffer – 70K subscribers

Christian makes her living as an outdoor adventure and travel photographer, and was a former Abercrombie model and retail manager.

As you’d expect, her travel videography is beautiful, but the channel is also packed full of thoughtful, intelligent tips about van life, making money, and life in general.

The Wild Card: Tom Green 267K YouTube subscribers

Bet you didn’t expect to find Tom Green on this list!

Tom is best known as a comedian, whose career started on MTV in the 1990s. He’s known for quirky and often pretty juvenile comedy like the Bum Bum Song , the Slutmobile , and Hollywood films Road Trip and Charlie’s Angels, as well as being married to Drew Barrymore in the early 2000s.

These days, Green seems a lot more introspective, as he’s vlogging his van life with his adorable dog, Charlie. Green’s still a quirky mix, with gorgeous cinematography, visits to stunning and out of the way places, musical offerings, and rambling, free-form live streams.

Slim Potatohead 129K YouTube subscribers

Slim Potatohead is something of an outlier among travel vlogs.

There’s definitely good videography and storytelling here, but this is not the vlog for you if you’re looking for fast paced, high excitement travel. Slim meanders along on his adventures, and it often seems like very little happens in a given blog. That said, he’s definitely an authentic voice that’s well worth checking out.

He travels pulling a small older trailer, spending plenty of time off grid in nature. Older videos feature the USA and Mexico, but these days he’s focusing on travel within Canada. There are videos on frugal camper renovations, camping spots, and plenty of exploring and meandering.

Mark Wiens 7.28 Million YouTube subscribers

Enthusiastic and energetic, Mark Wiens is a food vlogger who shares about South East Asia from his home base in Bangkok, Thailand.

I was first introduced to Mark’s Migrationology blog back in 2012, and I’ve loved following his transition to being one of YouTube’s most popular food and travel vloggers.

He features plenty of street food videos, with a strong focus on Thai food and travel.

Tyler and Todd 77K YouTube subscribers

Tyler and Todd are one of my absolute favorite channels. They’re funny, engaging, and have absolutely gorgeous videography and solid audio.

They’re a Canadian couple who travel with their adorable dogs Charlie and Eddy.

Because of the pandemic, they’re currently not traveling, but I’ve loved following along as they make a home in Nova Scotia, building an off grid cabin.

Incredibly personable and funny, they’re a treat to watch each week.

Vancity Vanlife 145K YouTube subscribers

Vancity Vanlife features Chrome and his adorable bulldog pup, Cruz.

Chrome is a former professional DJ, so this is a fantastic channel if you love great music and great audio. As a former DJ, he has a fantastic voice for audio.

He uploads almost every day, and this channel is a throwback to early daily vlogs of YouTube. Videos are based mostly around Vancouver, British Columbia, but he does sojourn around Canada and into the USA when he’s able. It’s a great channel to get a feel for daily van life realities.

Drew Binsky 2.34 Million YouTube subscribers

Drew, an American YouTuber, is definitely an engaging, entertaining presence on YouTube. He’s also controversial, as he continued traveling during the pandemic, and he’s garnered criticism for visiting countries like North Korea.

This is the type of channel that you’ll likely either love or hate.

Favorite travel video: He is the Ice Man (Wim Hof)

Project Amber 57K YouTube subscribers

Project Amber follows the adventures of a UK vlogger and his adorable Spaniel puppy, Lance as they travel in a converted ex-ambulance.

There’s plenty of great content in the archives that features road trips around the UK and Europe.

The man and dog duo just bought off-grid land in Portugal, and I’m looking forward to watching his local Portuguese adventures.

Lost in Europe

Ash Pollard of Lost in Europe is a 27 year old photographer from Leicester/England.

As the channel title suggests, he mostly features van travel around Europe. There’s some gorgeous videography here, and I’ve loved his time in Scotland, as well has his new content on van life in the winter.

Bald and Bankrupt 2.66 Million subscribers

Bald and Bankrupt follows the adventures of English travel vlogger Benjamin Rich, who mostly focuses on visiting post-Soviet states.

This channel is much more about meeting everyday people, and getting to know them and their lives, than cinematic scenes and views. It’s great entertainment, and I love that it focuses on getting to know people.

Like Drew Binsky, Rich has travelled during the pandemic. Rich was hospitalized for nine days for coronavirus in July 2020 in Serbia, which was not under lockdown at the time. He admitted that he was “blasé” about the pandemic, and has cautioned his viewers to take the pandemic seriously.

You’ll find reviews on many of our favorite brands on this channel, like Aer, Bellroy, Peak Design, and The North Face, and while they focus a lot on everyday carry gear, travel bags are thrown in the mix, too. Unlike some of the other channels we follow, Rushfaster has a team of gear reviewers, like we do at Pack Hacker, and they curate the products they showcase to ensure they meet their standards when it comes to form, function, and quality.

Maurice Moves

If you like to check out channels that showcase more than just bags, Maurice Moves has a great mix of tip and gear videos, plus comparison videos to help you select the right gear. The channel also includes videos about topics as varied as minimalism and keto. That's because they focus on three basic categories with their videos: everyday carry, everyday habits, and everyday growth. They focus on finding the best accessories so that you don’t have to, with videos on things ranging from everyday carry items to travel accessories. Be sure to check out their Shorts, and see if you can tune into your happy place, too!

When you’re short on time, you need a gear reviewer who will get to the point quickly without missing anything important. Bo Ismono has quick yet thorough videos that include travelogs, how-to videos, and behind-the-scenes of bag manufacturing, in addition to bag reviews, packing tips, and travel tips and tricks. Bo is a film editor based in Germany who also contributes to Carryology.com (more on them later!), so there is good production quality in all the videos on this channel. If you like Bo's style, they also have another channel focusing on other interests like movie reviews, martial arts, and a podcast.

Sometimes you want to hear about the gear, and sometimes you want to hear about where it's been. If you’re looking for more travel in your travel gear reviews, Josh Fenn shares a lot of personal travel experience along with gear recommendations. This Oregon-based filmmaker and digital content creator brings a documentary style to everyday carry and travel gear guides. We like that you can really get to know Josh when you watch the videos on this channel, so we recommend checking it out!

We all have that friend who has the coolest gear you didn’t know you needed, and Ron Kwok is that person. Ron has a ton of knowledge about different types of gear and is really passionate about everyday carry items. When you watch this channel, you'll see Ron does an amazing job of breaking down different load-outs to show you how to tailor a kit to fit your needs. This is a great channel to watch if you want to know what’s a practical purchase and what to skip.

Chase Reeves

Whether chatting about everyday or travel gear, Chase Reeves brings high energy and enthusiasm to the videos on this channel. While most of them focus on gear, you’ll also find some fun videos about traveling and their life, and we really appreciate that personal touch. Chase Reeves loves finding well-designed products that make life a better experience and has a bunch of great roundup videos to help you find the best bag and accessories for you.

Sergio Sala

If you like to take photos and videos on vacation, check out Sergio Sala’s channel. It’s filled with great tips for traveling with filmmaking gear, and it also includes tons of really detailed city guides. The global Carryology community is one of the original backpack review channels out there, so they have a ton of knowledge for you to dig into. These carry enthusiasts really dive deep into everyday carry gear, from backpacks to messenger bags and wallets, along with detailed reviews on luggage and other travel gear. Odie Matthews

Watching Odie Matthews is like sitting down to chat with your friend who loves gear as much as you do. This channel started out as Traveling Salseros, but whatever it’s called, we like how awesome they are at helping you narrow down what type of gear will work for you based upon all of its features. Danny Packs shares reviews on all the latest and greatest gear, whether it’s backpacks, everyday carry items, travel, and clothing, and they also have great tips for travel, organizing, and packing.

If you’re on the hunt for gear ideas and inspiration, check out Jon Gadget. They’re from the United Kingdom and do a great job of showing unique ways to optimize your loadout by pairing household items with cool everyday carry gear. They have lots of detailed reviews of travel gear and gadgets to help make your everyday life and next trip run smoothly, which comes in handy whether you're traveling for business or vacation.

Nomads Nation

As the name might suggest, these guys seem to love travel gear as much as we do! They have extremely thorough walkthroughs of every piece of a product, from the materials to individual features, colorways, and price. Some of their most popular reviews are of bags we've tested, too, like the Nomatic Backpack, ALPAKA Elements Pro, and Tortuga Setout. Love travelling for food? Need cooking inspiration from around the world?

Sure, there are some fantastic shows on mainstream TV and platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, but for me, the ultimate destination for the best food & travel shows is without a doubt, YouTube.

What’s so great about YouTube Food & Travel shows?

The vast majority of YouTube food & travel shows are independently run which means you get a unique and uncensored perspective through the eyes of the creator/s.

As someone who, by many people’s definition, is a professional chef, I attribute the vast majority of my culinary education to watching food & travel YouTube shows, particularly the ones I list below.

I also use these shows as inspiration for my future travels and to help me plan my trips around the best food a country or city has to offer.

Food Travel YouTube has literally opened my eyes to a whole new world of culture and flavour and given me wanderlust more than ever before.

If you’re a foodie and you want regular inspiration – here’s a list of the very best YouTube Food & Travel Channels:

The Best Ever Food Review Show

Founded and hosted by William Sonbuchner (stage name “Sonny Side”), the Best Ever Food Review Show team literally take us on a perpetual journey around the world, exploring some of the most unique and interesting food culture that the world has to offer.

Sonny doesn’t go on your stereotypical food tour. You will find him going deep, exploring tribal foods in Africa, tasting his way through remote villages in Asia, and going on adventures that most people would be nervous to undertake.

For all intents and purposes, this show is so much more than a food show. Sonny pulls back the curtain on cultures that many in the West have just not been exposed to.

He has a super open-minded approach and will try anything once (actually, I have seen him try things he doesn’t like multiple times – a true hero!).

Sonny partners with super knowledgeable local guides who help him to do unique food tours through the eyes of a local.

He is fantastic at both expressing what he is eating and also the cooking process which he very often observes and documents. For me as a cook, this is great because I really get to understand the building blocks of a dish which always gives me inspiration for my own cooking.

The show is detailed, funny, un-filtered and truly inspirational. It’s firmly my favourite channel on YouTube – get subscribed !

Mark Weins is a food adventurer based in Bangkok, Thailand. That said, you’d be forgiven for thinking that he has no permanent address as he is constantly travelling to some of the most interesting places in the world, uncovering some of the most amazing food that each culture has to offer.

Mark’s show is super family-friendly and a great way to gain inspiration for both your travels and your cooking at home.

Some of my favourite episodes have been where Mark travels to locations in Africa and the Middle East.

What I love about Mark Weins is that he travels to places that many of your traditional food & travel shows just wouldn’t go. Whether that is because they are simply not seen as “popular” or perhaps misunderstood as being dangerous or undesirable.

Another charm to Mark’s channel is the fact that he always travels with his wife and young son. It’s truly a family affair!

I highly recommend you get subscribed to Mark Wein’s channel and start working your way through his HUGE back catalogue of shows. They are truly bingeable!

The Food Ranger

The Food Ranger is another firm favourite when it comes to incredible YouTube food & travel shows. In fact, I’d say that The Food Ranger was one of the first food travel shows that I started watching on YouTube and really got me into the “street food YouTuber” scene (and now I am addicted!).

I started watching The Food Ranger (aka Trevor James) at a time when he was living in Chengdu, China. He had moved there and was studying in culinary school there.

But it was clear that his real passion was travelling and, as he often puts it, “going deep” into the street food markets of China. This lead him to traveling further and further from his home base in Cheungdu and exploring the world.

Trevor has such childlike wonder and giddy excitement when it comes to discovering and tasting new street food, it’s truly infectious!

If you are looking to get inspiration for where to travel for food, and specifically the hidden gems where you can experience truly local cuisine first-hand, The Food Ranger really is the show for you!

Again, Trevor James has a HUGE back catalogue of content which you could binge-watch for days!

Strictly Dumpling

Strictly Dumpling is another huge and well-known food & travel channel and for good reason.

Host Mike Chen is a knowledgeable and passionate foodie who LOVES checking out restaurants and doing food tours all over the world.

I’d say that for the most part Strictly Dumpling keeps more to the “beaten track” than other channels I have mentioned, however, that should not diminish the awesomeness of this channel one bit.

Mike has got a real eye for finding absolutely amazing foodie spots in cities all over the world and is super gifted at documenting his visits and sharing his excitable and honest feedback on everything he eats.

If you’re travelling to major destinations and are looking for restaurant inspo, definitely check out Strictly Dumpling to see if Mike has been there, and if he has, watch the content and take notes!

Desi Chris is one of the newer channels I have subscribed to but man it is SO good!

Chris is an American living in Vietnam, but his true passion is Indian food! He speaks Hindi fluently so has the most amazing interactions with locals as he travels the length and breadth of India searching for the most amazing Indian street food.

Desi Chris is different from most travel food shows in that, it has a very minimal amount of editing. Chris will make his way to a market looking for food, hit record on the camera and give almost a POV documentation of how his adventure goes.

You’ll find videos of him interacting with locals, getting restaurant recommendations, jumping on the back of newfound friends’ motorbikes and all sorts! Every episode truly is an adventure.

In many ways, Desi Chris reminds me of YouTubers like Bald and Bankrupt and Harald Baldr , except Chris is ALL about the food.

I find Desi Chris an extremely therapeutic watch which means for me it’s the perfect show to put on before bed as I am winding down.

This is somewhat of a bonus show as I wouldn’t count this strictly as a food and travel show. That said, this show features plenty of food and is a very unique format.

How can I describe travelgeek ? It’s a non-cringe POV ASMR channel all about travel in Japan.

Each episode features the host going on a different trip – whether that is a night train, a ferry, or an overnight stay in an internet cafe. It’s all shot with no talking and no music, but there are subtitles throughout where the host explains where they are and what they are doing.

These episodes almost always include food in some way – whether that is seeing the kind of food served up on various types of transportation in Japan, or local eateries where the host travels.

I find this channel hugely therapeutic to watch before bed – and one foodie to another, I imagine you will enjoy it too !

According to a recent study Google conducted with Ipsos MediaCT, two out of three U.S. consumers watch online travel videos when they're thinking about taking a trip. What exactly are travelers looking for? What's popular? What content are they watching? Here's what we found.

Travel content has proliferated as people around the world share their experiences and seek inspiration for their next adventure. Every month, more than one billion people visit YouTube to watch more than six billion hours of video, making YouTube an ideal place to explore how travelers interact with video content. 1 According to a recent study Google conducted with Ipsos MediaCT, two out of three U.S. consumers watch online travel videos when they're thinking about taking a trip. 2 But what are travelers looking for? What's popular? What content are they watching? To find out, we analyzed aggregated and anonymized views of travel content on YouTube in the U.S. from early 2012 to early 2014. For the purposes of this research, we define "travelers" as those individuals who engage with or search for travel content on Google.com and/or YouTube. Overall, our findings have big implications for marketers looking to connect with travelers, regardless of category.

Videos influence travel decisions

YouTube data shows that travelers are spending more time watching online videos than ever before, with views of travel-related content up 118% year over year (YoY). According to the data, travelers are increasingly using mobile devices to consume travel-related videos anytime and anywhere; in 2013, mobile devices accounted for roughly 30% of all travel video views, with mobile viewing up 97% on smartphones and 205% on tablets, YoY. 3

Across devices—desktop and mobile—travelers are consuming travel-related videos around the clock. Nearly half are viewed during prime time (3:00—10:00 p.m. PST). 4 While desktop users tend to watch videos throughout the day, smartphone and tablet users tend to tune in during the evening hours.

What's piquing their interest? Eighty-eight percent of YouTube travel searches focus on destinations, attractions/points of interest or general travel ideas. 5

Much like the seasonality we see in the industry overall, travel search activity on YouTube peaks in July, with smaller spikes in March and October. While a large percentage of Google.com travel searches are brand specific and based on purchase-intent activity, searches on YouTube generally occur earlier in the travel-planning process.

Compelling content grabs travelers' attention

While travel watchers on YouTube are interested in community-generated content, the majority of travel-related views (67%) are for brand or professionally released videos. In fact, views of branded videos are up 394% YoY, and we see companies with a strong brand presence, such as Turkish Airlines, Disney Parks & Resorts and Expedia, making the most of this opportunity. 6

Viewership across travel categories increased significantly YoY. While most are tuning in to watch videos about tourist destinations and attractions (40% of the total travel views), the largest growth can be seen in the cruises and charters category, up an impressive 262%. 7 This rise is due, in large part, to an increase in videos from companies such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Viking River Cruises and Princess Cruises.

Travelers are looking to sustain a connection

Travelers want to do more than just watch videos on YouTube; they want to connect with creators and brands. In 2014 year to date, subscriptions to top travel channels on YouTube have increased 106% YoY. 8 And these subscribers watch 86% longer per view than nonsubscribers do. 9

They're also extremely interested in hearing real-life stories. Nearly half of the travel subscriptions are to vlogs (video blogs) that feature personal travel experiences.

Travel vlogs, in fact, receive 4x more social engagement (likes, comments, shares, favorites and subscriptions) than other types of travel content on YouTube. 10 Travelers tend to find them more engaging on a per-view basis.

People of all ages subscribe to YouTube travel content. Fifty percent of travel channel subscribers are aged 25 to 64, while 38% fall in the 18 to 24 age range. 11 The younger audience tends to favor travel vlogs, suggesting they have more of an interest in "authentic" content. Perhaps they're living vicariously through their fellow YouTubers, or, at the very least, getting inspired to travel.

The 25-to-64-year-olds seem to be interested in a broader range of content relevant to frequent travelers. Often these are videos associated with decisions further down the travel purchase path, such as brand information, reviews and tips.

Going beyond travel content

It's not all about travel for these YouTube visitors, though. Three in four come to watch videos related to their interests, hobbies or particular topic. 12 Travelers often watch content in categories closely related to travel, such as restaurants, spas and food and drink. Compared with the average YouTube user, travelers are 18x more likely to watch videos about restaurants, for example. 13

As we can see from the chart below, they're also interested in viewing videos about categories tangential to travel such as finance, extreme sports, home and garden, and autos and vehicles. Interestingly, they're less likely to engage with content about computer and video games, comics and animation, and hair care.

Travel videos drive brand buzz

Viral videos aren't just for the twerkers, laughing babies and anything animal related (for those "aww" moments). There's virality in the travel category as well. That's because travelers, like any other YouTube users, enjoy sharing their favorite videos with friends and family.

Looking at travel videos that have gone viral (defined as content created to drive buzz that's not overly transactional and generated 500,000 views or more), we can see that airline companies account for most of the views (76%). 14 Turkish Airlines' "Kobe vs. Messi" series, Virgin America's "#VXSafetyDance" and WestJet's "Christmas Miracle: Real Time Giving" are great examples of videos that are engaging, fun and, at times, touching. Airlines have embraced video as a powerful differentiation tool, one that allows their brands to stand out and be creative with a range of topics.

Nineteen percent of viral video views come from destinations, which include brands such as Disney Parks & Resorts. Two standout examples from Disney Parks are "Grumpy Cat Finds Her Disney Side" and "Disneyland Musical Marriage Proposal."

While a viral video can rack up millions of views (if you're lucky), views are just one measure of a video's success. Shares, subscribers gained and other online actions are important as well.

Implications for marketers

Across industries, advertisers are increasingly embracing online video to drive awareness and engagement, and this trend is only expected to accelerate. For travel advertisers, online video is a powerful way to convey excitement about a destination, product, service or brand. From 2012 to 2013, uploads of travel-related videos (both brand/professionally released and community generated) grew by 190%, and growth in travel video uploads overall outpace those of other major categories on YouTube. 15

As digital video becomes an even bigger part of the traveler's journey, it's increasingly important for advertisers to seize the opportunity. A strong video strategy can help brands reach, inspire and engage today's digitally savvy traveler in more ways than ever before.

ChatGPT 3.5 Review: First Doesn't Mean Best

While ChatGPT 3.5 isn't as robust as 4.0, nor does it generate images, for most inquiries it gets the job done. Just be sure to double-check.

ChatGPT is mind-blowing, but not without faults. When OpenAI's chatbot stormed onto the internet in late 2022, it dazzled with its ability to answer seemingly any question with a unique answer.

This type of power, being able to ask open-ended questions and get back useful answers, is not how traditional internet search works. Putting questions into Google yields links to various articles and Reddit threads with people giving their research and opinions. It's up to you, the end user, to absorb all that information and synthesize a conclusion in your head.

ChatGPT does that synthesis for you. It truly does feel like a calculator, but not for numbers, instead, for the wealth of human knowledge found online.

There are different tiers to ChatGPT. The one available for free, version 3.5, uses 175 billion parameters. Think of parameters as the number of pieces of information. The more parameters a model has, the better it can understand language and produce nuanced sentences. While that certainly is a lot, it pales in comparison to ChatGPT 4.0, which reportedly has 1 trillion parameters , but costs money based on the number of inputs and outputs. For this review, I tested the free version.

How CNET tests AI chatbots

CNET takes a practical approach to reviewing AI chatbots. Our goal is to determine how good it is relative to the competition and which purposes it serves best. To do that, we give the AI prompts based on real-world use cases, such as finding and modifying recipes, researching travel or writing emails. We score the chatbots on a 10-point scale that considers factors such as accuracy, creativity of responses, number of hallucinations and response speed. See our page on how we test AI for more.

When using ChatGPT, keep in mind that the service automatically collects the information you put into its system, so be mindful of giving the service any personal information. For more information, see OpenAI's privacy policy .

It's hard to recommend ChatGPT 3.5 as a shopping aid. Because its training data is only up until September 2021 , it lacks information about newly released products. It's hard to ask it to make comparisons on the latest TVs and cars if ChatGPT 3.5 has nothing to work with.

Google Gemini and Perplexity are all connected to the open internet, meaning that information on new products is present. Microsoft Copilot was recently updated to incorporate GPT-4 Turbo, a more advanced AI model from OpenAI that has training data up until April 2023 . Like Gemini and Perplexity, it too is linked to the open internet to bring in links and other more recent bits of information. Anthropic's Claude isn't connected to the open internet, but its training data goes up until August 2023, so at least it's a bit more recent.

Searching for recipes on Google can be a slog. Finding a good recipe sometimes means having to scroll through paragraphs of needless backstory to get to the recipe itself.

ChatGPT cuts out all that fluff and gives you a recipe, instantly, while also allowing you to add additional variables specific to your dietary needs. These types of recipes might not be as easily available via a Google search.

For example, I asked ChatGPT for a chicken tikka marinade recipe and it produced one in seconds, minus a backstory of visiting an Indian restaurant for the first time on Curry Mile in London. When I asked it to make a vegetarian version, ChatGPT remixed it instantly, swapping the chicken for paneer, an Indian cottage cheese.

At the same time, ChatGPT 3.5's recipe generation lacked context. While ChatGPT does get straight to the point, the author of this other recipe I found pointed to the importance of using Kashmiri chili powder, kasuri methi (dried fenugreek), chaat masala, amchur (dried mango powder) and black salt. ChatGPT's version of this recipe was noticeably barebones by comparison.

When asking Gemini this same question, it was able to include ingredients like Kashmiri chili powder and amchur. I guess there's some secret sauce Google is using to get a bit more culture out of its recipe generation. In our tests, Gemini performed the best, followed by Microsoft Copilot (in creative mode), then ChatGPT 3.5, and it was a tie between Perplexity and Claude. However, no AI chatbot excelled at this test.

Research and accuracy

Research can be a slog of jumping between Google searches, research papers and public libraries. Generative AI can condense all of that hard work, absorbing the wealth of published knowledge online and helping synthesize information and giving specific answers to specific questions.

It's also handy if generative AI can pull up the sources it's referencing. However, ChatGPT 3.5 doesn't source much at all.

Whatever information ChatGPT dumps on your screen requires having to go to Google to actually find it and link to it, which ChatGPT makes challenging. Often, when asking ChatGPT for an exact source, it'll say that as an AI language model, it doesn't have direct access to real-time data or the ability to browse the internet. The inability to easily cross-reference sources makes the actual real-world usefulness of ChatGPT questionable. Sure, among friends, you may cite ChatGPT and get away with it. But for school or work, you'll be left scrambling on Google, potentially on a futile chase looking for a source that might not even exist.

It seems that OpenAI has tweaked ChatGPT to often not point to specific papers or sources when asked. This could have been because in the past it would make up papers that didn't exist. One user on Reddit from 10 months ago said that when asking, "Give me some papers on the relationship between homeschooling and neuroplasticity," ChatGPT would point to a paper that didn't exist. Asking that question now, ChatGPT says as an AI model, it can't browse the internet or access specific papers. However, when asking questions regarding the neurological implications of COVID-19 on health, ChatGPT immediately pointed to four sources, all of which were easily found on Google.

It doesn't help that ChatGPT 3.5, at times, would hallucinate. Hallucinations are when an AI chatbot produces an incorrect answer but says it with confidence. It wasn't always immediately obvious and took some additional digging around on Google before I realized that ChatGPT 3.5 was making up factoids.

This inconsistency is annoying, as it's hard to pin down why ChatGPT 3.5 bars citing some pieces of information while allowing others.

Compared to other Chatbots, Claude performed the best at synthesizing different bits of research as well as linking to sources. Copilot, in creative mode, also performed similarly to Claude, finding the nuances in a complex topic. Google Gemini, with its access to the open internet, did a better job than ChatGPT 3.5, but hallucinated in odd ways, making up the names of studies that didn't exist. And Perplexity, while it did a decent job, worked in sources that weren't academically reliable.

Summarizing

ChatGPT 3.5 certainly shows its limits when asked to summarize an article. I asked it to summarize an article I wrote earlier this month regarding ChatGPT's impact across the tech scene at CES 2024 . I pasted the entire article into 3.5 and the summary it yielded was lacking. It picked up the background information and mentioned the main thesis, but failed to bring the point home. It also abruptly stopped its summary, ending midway through a sentence. When I asked why it had stopped summarizing, ChatGPT 3.5 apologized and gave another summary, only to abruptly stop at the same spot.

ChatGPT has a 4,096 character limit, according to Android Authority , meaning it can't summarize a 940-word article. Essentially, don't expect it to help you parse through large legal documents or terms of service agreements.

In comparison, Gemini has the ability to summarize articles just based on a link, but its link-based summaries were barebones and rather useless. When I pasted the whole article into Gemini, however, it actually did a better job of summarizing my article than ChatGPT 3.5.

Perplexity and Claude failed to get the full scope of my article.

Looking up travel ideas for major cities like Los Angeles or Tokyo isn't hard. The internet is packed with websites, TikToks, tweets and other options showcasing the most populous cities in the world. What about Columbus, Ohio, though? That's where an AI chatbot can come in handy, filtering through TripAdvisor, Reddit and other posts to put together a serviceable itinerary.

When I asked ChatGPT 3.5 for a three-day travel plan in Columbus, it did a surprisingly solid job of putting together packed itineraries full of activities. It recommended places to see as well as restaurants to visit. And unlike Google Gemini, all the restaurants it recommended were actually real. Why Gemini was more prone to hallucinations than ChatGPT in this test isn't clear. But it does point to how much tuning OpenAI has done to ensure information remains accurate.

According to CNET's Bella Czajkowski , who's from Columbus, the only potential ding was that ChatGPT 3.5 recommended going to the Short North Arts District both on the first and third day. Generally, people like travel plans that don't repeat locations.

Perplexity made vague recommendations whereas Claude performed well, but had one error. Gemini hallucinated the most, making up the names of restaurants that didn't exist.

Of the chatbots, Copilot performed the best, making a clean and organized list of activities, all bullet-pointed, along with pictures and emojis.

Writing emails

ChatGPT does well in writing basic emails. From finding an excuse for not turning in your homework on time to an apology for missing an event, ChatGPT returns results that read believable, if not always genuine. When asking it to generate an email asking your boss for time off, ChatGPT 3.5 does default to overly formal-sounding language, but asking it to lighten up the language does create something more passable. Still, it'll require some tweaking to sound believably human. Even when asked to dilute some of the formality, it can still come across as robotic. So, ChatGPT will certainly give a solid template, but will require some editing to make it sound real.

Comparatively, Gemini wrote emails well and was easy to tune to make it sound more casual and humanlike. Perplexity performed well at writing basic emails, but faltered on more complex topics, often coming off as robotic. Claude performed the best, crafting sentences with great nuance and believability. Copilot had no problems writing basic emails, but it refused to answer prompts about more controversial topics.

ChatGPT 3.5 is fine for most people, but there are better options

For most basic queries and even a few more complex ones, ChatGPT 3.5 will get the job done for most people. The answers it yields are serviceable, and often with a bit of tweaking, is still a lot less work than writing things yourself.

That's not to say that ChatGPT 3.5 should be used as an end-all solution. It's a tool that, when used in conjunction with Google and other resources, can help cut time down on research and discovery. Still, to get the most out of it, questions have to be worded in a manner that can get AI chatbots to respond most accurately. This is referred to as prompt engineering, a subspecialty that may become a necessary skill as AI chatbots permeate throughout the tech we use.

While ChatGPT 3.5 is user-friendly enough so that most people can still find value in it, it's best to keep your guard up and not to take ChatGPT's answers as absolute. It's always best to do a bit of fact checking, which means that Google will still be your web browser's homepage for the time being.

It raises the question: Why use ChatGPT 3.5 when you can use Microsoft Copilot, which uses GPT-4 Turbo, for free? Given that GPT-4 Turbo reportedly uses over 1 trillion parameters , which are values that make an AI model more accurate, and is connected to the internet, there really isn't any reason to download the ChatGPT app.

Given its drawbacks, it's hard to recommend ChatGPT 3.5 over Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude, despite how revolutionary it was back in November 2022.
