Why Buc-ee's Is The South's Best Travel Stop

Meet Buc-ee's, the detour-worthy convenience store chain that’s become a road trip destination in its own right.

The thing about Buc-ee’s is that, before you’ve been to one, it doesn’t make any kind of sense. And after you’ve experienced it firsthand, you don’t need for it to. It’s a 24-hour mega gas station with a bustling barbecue joint inside—a retail experience that’s part home-decor store and part outdoor outfitter. In this gawker’s paradise, the people-watching is surpassed only by the dizzying selection of snacks. I had never stepped foot in a Buc-ee's (or knew much about it) until now. I was on a mission to find out why it was named The South's Best Travel spot.

Folks come for the abundant and obsessively maintained restrooms and stay to browse the corn hole sets, footed pajamas, deer feeders, and scented candles (including some perfumed with the sugary aroma of their signature puffed-corn treat, the Beaver Nugget). You’ll find anything from a 14-ounce tub of bacon grease to a Dutch oven or a cast-iron smoker.

You could even complete your Christmas shopping here. Depending on your predilection for branded products (the namesake bright-eyed beaver in a jaunty red cap is omnipresent), your loved ones might be none the wiser. Speaking of which, the only line you’re likely to wait in is the one for a photo op with Buc-ee himself.

The impressive size of the store is really secondary to the comforting chaos that comes from wedging so many disparate yet familiar objects into an unexpected location—one that is open around the clock. It’s a spectacle that’s sprung from the sum of individual parts that, on their own, are not especially spectacular. Barbecue station employees who sing a call-andresponse routine every time a fresh piece of meat comes onto the slab for carving? In a restaurant, it would be a little charming but kind of hokey (and a bit grating at some point). But in a gas station at midnight, it’s practically hallucinatory. One must wonder—do these singing brisket slingers ever sleep?

Buc-ee’s outlets weren’t always so all-encompassing (and to be fair, not all of the older, more scaled-down locations are that way even now). Arch “Beaver” Aplin III opened the original in 1982 in a small South Texas town on a foundation of bagged ice and nice bathrooms and saw enough success to add a second location nearby just a few years later. Over the decades that followed, Aplin continued to build his brand in Texas, slowly at first and then with increasing momentum. The stores didn’t start to get supersized until the early 2000s and didn’t breach the state’s borders until 2019, when the Loxley, Alabama, spot was established. Today, there are Buc-ee’s in eight states across the South, with expansion beyond the region on the road map for this year.

Related: How Buc-ee's Became The Most Popular Convenience Store In Texas

Still, the store’s DNA remains steadfastly Texan: Every Buc-ee’s will have brisket and kolaches along with a small town’s worth of specialty-food counters (think fresh fudge and hot candied pecans). But each of the markets likes to add its own flavor, whether that’s in the form of actual local fare or via merchandise touting hometown sports teams and nearby national parks.

Last November, I had my first Buc-ee’s experience in Sevierville, Tennessee . I had just emerged from a two-day driving tour traversing twisty, mist-cloaked roads through the Great Smoky Mountains , part of an Asheville-to-Nashville leaf-peeping adventure I planned with my mom on a whim. It was, for the moment, both the newest Buc-ee’s and (as proclaimed by the several news outlets that documented its opening) the largest convenience store in the entire world. An array of snack foods and souvenirs unfurled across its impressive 74,707 square feet—a size that rivals some domestic airport terminals. The sheer enormousness of it was hitting all the patrons differently. One school-age child wandered the aisles urging other visitors to simply (but genuinely) “Enjoy… enjoy!” Meanwhile, in a relatively calm corner near the slushy dispenser, a weary-looking man was resting his basket atop a wall of bottled-water pallets and muttering to someone (maybe just himself), “I think this is the safest place to be in the whole store.”

In preparation for my trip, I’d done my homework—that is, I’d watched TikTok videos of other individuals documenting their own first visits to Buc-ee’s—and wondered if I would feel the same frenzied energy they did when I walked through the sliding glass doors. I’d also read reports on the must-try items and polled friends about their go-tos. Doing any kind of research before going to a gas station was a new one for me, as was much of the in-store experience.

I ambled, sampled, and successfully maneuvered the pit stop in an ill-advised outfit (involving overalls and multiple layers of outerwear) without breaking a sweat or landing in a single suspicious puddle. I fielded two separate phone calls from my mother, who was exploring her own zone on the other side of the building, and longed for a walkie-talkie. (Will searching for your parents in a Buc-ee’s one day replace the childhood rite of passage of getting lost in a mall?) I dutifully filled my cart with two types of Beaver Nuggets and three flavors of jerky along with a T-shirt and a particularly eye-catching cooler bag in the same simple graphic black-and-yellow style of the chain’s iconic roadside billboards.

Eventually, I reunited with my mother by the meat counter, and together we took in one final performance of the brisket song before making our way out to the car to eat. (Seemingly the only thing that the Sevierville outpost doesn’t have on its premises is a seated dining area.) As we polished off our brisket sandwiches in the parking lot, swapping her chopped version for my sliced one partway through, we reflected on all we’d encountered and what we’d tell our friends. And then I did something else I’d never done at a gas station before: I totally forgot to fuel up. Fortunately, there was another Buc-ee’s just a quarter tank or so down the road.

10 Reasons We Love Love’s Travel Stops

The Oklahoma-based gas station and convenience store is a sight for sore eyes on long car rides.

travel stop the top

We’ve all been there. You’re five hours into an eight-hour car ride , or maybe you’ve only made it an hour from your house, but already everyone is getting restless. Someone needs to go to the bathroom. Someone spilled the box of Cheez-its, so you’re running dangerously low on snacks. The driver needs a caffeine fix, and Fido looks like he’s about ready to jump out the window. That’s when you see it—that familiar bright yellow sign topped with a beating red heart. There’s a Love’s at the next exit that’s about to solve all your road trip woes. Here are 10 reasons why we’ll always brake for a Love’s Travel Stop and why we can’t get enough of this Southern-born franchise.

Courtesy of Love's Travel Stops

1. It’s owned by a Southern family.

Tom and Judy Love started Love’s in 1964 when they spent $5,000 to lease an abandoned service station in Watonga, Oklahoma. Though Tom passed away in 2023 at the age of 85, the nationwide franchise is still privately owned and run by the Love family.

2. There’s always a Love’s right when you need one.

With about 600 travel stops in 42 states, nearly every highway in the U.S. is blessed with a Love’s. This means that no matter where you’re driving in the South—even if you’ve gotten really deep in the sticks—you’re likely to find a Love’s stocked and waiting to welcome you in.

3. Their road trip snacks are elite.

The one redeeming quality of a long car ride (other than a great playlist) are the snacks . Like any convenience store, Love’s has a huge selection of packaged snacks—chips, sunflower seeds, Little Debbie cakes, beef jerky, the whole nine yards. But the real star of the show at a Love’s is their company-branded candy line, which includes everything from gummy bears and peach rings to frosted heart pretzels and saltwater taffy.

4. They’re always open.

Driving late into the night? Love’s is open. What about those wee hours of the morning? They’re open then, too. There’s something about a 3 a.m. Coke and peanuts that just hits different.

5. It’s a great place to stretch your legs.

After long hours spent cramped in the car, your legs may be itching to move. Love’s is a great place to stop because the store is so big that you’ll have plenty to peruse while you walk the life back into your aching limbs.

6. You can have a meal there.

Hundreds of Love’s locations are paired with fast-food favorites like Arby’s, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Hardee’s, and Bojangles. But even if there’s no dining partner, Love’s has its own line of hot sandwiches and tacos (for breakfast and lunch), as well as a roller grill that features hot dogs and smoked sausages, as well as their signature Tornados taquitos in flavors like Ranchero Beef Steak and Southwestern-Style Chicken.

7. They give back to the community.

Giving generously is a huge part of the Love’s company culture. The franchise donates to nonprofits in Oklahoma and beyond, including Teach for America, Operation Homefront, and the United Way of Central Oklahoma. In addition, all locations donate a part of their budget to a local nonprofit of their choice, and Love’s participates in the Children’s Miracle Network. To date, Love’s has raised more than $33 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

8. They think of everything.

There’s a lot more to a Love’s Travel Stop than just gas and snacks. Locations across the country offer truck care, RV parking and hookups, laundry facilities, and even private showers.

9. Dogs are welcome.

Not only does Love’s accommodate humans, but it takes care of their furry friends, too. Many Love’s locations feature dog parks and pet waste station.

10. You’ll find plenty of clean restrooms.

The number one reason to stop on a road trip? Someone’s got to go. Rather than pressing your luck on a small-town gas station, count on Love’s to provide clean restrooms without a line.

Roadtrippers.

While planning a road trip usually begins with a starting location and a destination, the real work starts when it comes to figuring out where to stop, what to see, and how to get there. Your favorite GPS application might show you the quickest route from point A to point B, but that isn't necessarily the best route. Luckily, several different websites and apps can help you design your perfect road trip .

Some of them are best for finding the halfway point between two places so you can split up the trip, while others focus on highlighting the most interesting or unique points of interest. After all, a road trip is all about the journey, and you'll find so many places to stop with these resources that you won't want the adventure to end.

Offering route information for 45 countries, Whatshalfway.com is a simple website that provides your route's midway point as well as suggestions for places to stay, restaurants, and things to do along the route. Simply input your starting and ending point, any cities you want to pass through on the way, and add as many stops as you please. There are also options to avoid tolls and/or highways.

The website will automatically route the trip with evenly spaced suggested stops along the way. The "Click here to find a venue" link will open a new page with all nearby businesses, but these are drawn directly from Google maps so there may not be any businesses, restaurants, or accommodations that suit your personal needs. There's also no way to export or share the list.

You can use MeetWays to find the halfway point between two addresses, with the option to add one point of interest (like a hotel, movie theater, or restaurant). It's available in over 30 countries and displays a list of businesses relevant to your selected point of interest (or a list of nearby restaurants if you leave the point of interest field blank.) However, if you only need the halfway point MeetWays works in an additional how 115 countries

If you want to take the scenic route, you can easily change the settings to avoid highways or toll roads. Routes are easy to share via email or social media but there's no way to edit your starting and ending points nor is there a way to accommodate multiple stops.

Sometimes you just need to find the nearest pitstop that has gas, a bathroom, a decent place to eat, or some combination of the above. The website iExit is perfect for all of that and more. But it shines brightest when you use the mobile app while already on the road.

Easy-to-read images show what's offered at each exit on the interstate you're currently on, making it easy to plan out your pitstops before taking an exit. See gas prices, accommodation options, Wi-Fi availability, and restaurants all conveniently compiled on one page. You can either type in your starting point and destination to see pitstops along the route or use the GPS feature on your phone to find the nearest exits to your current location.

Travelmath will appeal to travelers who like to plan for all aspects of their trips. Simply input in your two cities and Travelmath will tell you the biggest cities or most popular destinations to stop in along the way, along with the distance and time between each one. It will even calculate the estimated cost of driving!

If you aren't sure if taking a car is the right option for your trip, it will also give you a side-by-side comparison of flights and driving details to help you chose the best method.

If you care less about the halfway point and more about the best places to stop, then Roadtrippers is what you're looking for. It's available as a website and mobile app, so you can easily plan from home or while on the road. Just punch in Point A and Point B into the application and Roadtrippers will show you what routes are available plus highly rated points of interest, restaurants, cafes, and hotels along the way.

The site and app are both free to use, but you can pay for a premium version to unlock even more features such as offline use, adding more than five stops, and collaborating with friends.

25 Best Stops on an Epic Cross-Country America Road Trip

The Great American Road Trip is just as much a part of Americana as the stars and stripes. While in yonder years, Route 66 dominated as the iconic drive, today, the cross-country road trip reigns supreme. We mapped out a 10-day itinerary—including top city sights and national parks between Washington, D.C. to Washington State—so you can make the best of your journey west.

Chelsea is Brooklyn-based travel writer, editor, and photographer. When not home eating her way through NYC, she's gallivanting across the globe, sailing the coast of Croatia or hiking the peaks of Peru. Her superpowers include booking flight deals and sleeping in small plane seats.

Day 1: 263 miles from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh

Once you’ve gotten your fill of America’s capital, it’s time to hit the road heading west. About three and half hours in, you’ll pass by Fallingwater , the renowned residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright that sits cantilevered over a bucolic waterfall in rural Pennsylvania. The grounds are maintained year-round, with the original 1930s custom furniture and artwork still on display. From here, you’re just 75 minutes outside Pittsburgh. Upon arriving in Steel City, drop your bags at the Ace Hotel Pittsburgh —a refurbished century-old YMCA turned hip hotel in the up-and-coming East Liberty neighborhood—then follow the in-the-know crowd to Smallman Galley , a restaurant incubator with four rotating food concepts from a line-up of rising chefs. This season, there’s Detroit-style pizza, Vietnamese cuisine, Latin-fusion tapas, and innovative takes on American classics.

Day 2: 460 miles from Pittsburgh to Chicago

While the second half of this cross-country adventure focuses on the scenery, the eastern side is all about the cityscapes. Divide today’s day-long trek to Chicago with a pitstop in Cleveland, just two hours west of Pittsburgh. Here, grab a bite to eat at the West Side Market before wandering through the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to see guitars and paraphernalia from music legends like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Mick Jagger.

You’re going to want to pick up some gift shop snacks, because it’ll be another five hours before you pull into the Windy City. In Chicago, bed down at the Viceroy Chicago on the glitzy Gold Coast, whose opulent interiors are done up in Art Deco elements that nod to the hotel’s past as the 1920s Cedar Hotel. The real showstopper is the 18th-floor rooftop overlooking the Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan.

Day 3: 147 miles from Chicago to Madison, Wisconsin

A two-and-a-half-hour drive from Chicago brings you to Wisconsin’s charming college town of Madison. This untapped Midwest gem is home to locavore restaurants, indie boutiques, and contemporary art galleries. Follow the locals to Sophia’s Bakery & Café , where mouthwatering cottage cheese pancakes are served in a cozy dining room. The nearby Chazen Museum of Art and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art have impressive collections, but if you’d rather spend the day indulging in some retail therapy, check out Upshift for flirty vintage dresses or Anthology for quirky handmade crafts. There’s no better place to have dinner than the James Beard award-winning L’Etoile Restaurant , where chef Tory Miller—you may have seen him on Iron Chef Showdown —serves locally sourced dishes like Blue Valley Gardens duck breast with Swiss chard and soubise.

Day 4: 775 miles from Madison to Rapid City, South Dakota

Today is the longest stretch you’ll be on the road, so crank those tunes and prepare to cruise straight through Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota on I-90. Stretch your legs in Badlands National Park , an otherworldly expanse of jagged pink pinnacles, grass prairies, and ancient fossil beds. While rhinos, wild horses, and saber-toothed cats used to roam this wild terrain, today you’re more likely to spot bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs. Backcountry camping is available for the truly adventurous; others can set up at Cedar Pass Campground (which offers running water, toilets, and covered picnic tables) or the park’s eco-friendly cabins , which come outfitted with pine-wood beds, flatscreen TVs, and mini-fridges and microwaves.

Day 5: 533 miles from Rapid City to Jackson, Wyoming

It’s early to rise on day five if you want to beat the crowds for an early-morning visit to Mount Rushmore national monument, just 20 minutes away. After taking in the Presidents’ massive granite profiles, continue on through the gorges, canyons, and cliffs of the Black Hills National Forest . Once you’re out of South Dakota, you’ll cut through the heart of Wyoming, passing endless plains and the sprawling Wind River Reservation. Tucked between the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains, Jackson blends Wyoming’s rustic, rough-and-tumble side with a refined resort town vibe. The Anvil Hotel is a perfect example of this fusion: the redesigned 1950s motel reflects the region’s rugged past with a mountain-modern twist. Stylish interiors, courtesy of Brooklyn-based firm Studio Tack, are done up with brass fixtures, custom iron bed frames, and Woolrich blankets. After settling in, make a dinner reservation at Glorietta if you’re in the mood for Italian. The roasted acorn squash; ricotta cavatelli with spicy sausage, brown butter, and fried sage; and zeppole topped with mascarpone and strawberry compote come highly recommended.

Days 6-8: 426 miles from Jackson to Missoula, Montana

Get your cameras ready: the next few days are all about epic Rocky Mountain scenery, from Wild West backcountry to lush, lakeside meadows. Before leaving Jackson Hole, fuel up with homemade pastries or bread pudding french toast at Persephone Bakery , then set your GPS for Grand Teton National Park . This 310,000-acre swath encompasses Jackson Lake, Snake River, and the entire Teton range, which is webbed together by more than 200 miles of hiking trails. Just 10 miles north on 191, you’ll enter Yellowstone —America’s first national park famous as much for its rainbow-colored hot springs, mud pots, and spewing geysers as it is for picture-perfect wildlife sightings (keep your eyes peeled for bison, moose, black bears, elk, and the rare wolf pack).

After Yellowstone, cross the border into Montana’s Big Sky country and continue north past dude ranches, whitewater rapids, and vast cerulean skies as far as the eye can see. Home for the night—the Resort at Paws Up , a 37,000-acre working cattle ranch and luxe retreat in the Blackfoot Valley—is just a half hour east of Missoula. Take your pick between a private log cabin or riverfront glamping tent, which comes with its own chandelier, copper soaking tub, and on-call butler and chef, who will happily cook up whole-roasted rainbow trout or chili-dusted Black Angus prime rib. Although there’s world-class fly fishing, ATVing, and rock climbing on offer, horseback riding is the resort’s beating heart. Embrace your inner cowboy (or girl!) at the Saddle Club, whose 29,000-square-foot arena and more than 100 miles of trails make it the largest private equestrian center in Montana. The on-site wranglers can also arrange rodeo lessons, cattle drives, and dinners aboard traditional chuckwagons.

Days 9-10: 685 miles from Missoula to Seattle

Before heading west to your final destination, it’s worth making one last detour to see Montana’s stunning Glacier National Park . You can take in the scenery—crystalline, glacier-fed lakes; sheer, snow-capped peaks; untouched alpine meadows—along the gorgeous Going-to-the-Sun Road , a 50-mile route that crosses the Continental Divide and winds through Logan Pass alongside Saint Mary Lake. Heads up: be prepared to pull over to make way for mountain goats!

After (reluctantly) leaving the mountains of Montana, hop back on I-90 to enter the northern tip of Idaho. This short sprint overlooks steep gorges and straddles the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene before entering Washington via Spokane. The final four-hour leg to Seattle is pretty barren, so make sure you have your road trip playlist queued up for some carpool karaoke. You know you’re getting close to the coast when you hit Snoqualmie Pass, just 55 miles outside the Seattle. The drive cuts through the Cascade Mountain Range, home to towering evergreen forests, misty mountaintops, and thundering waterfalls.

Once you reach the city, you deserve to put your feet up at The Nest , Thompson Seattle ‘s rooftop bar, for sundowners and sweeping views of Puget Sound, Mount Rainier, and the Seattle cityscape. Cheers!

Road Tripping: A Tour of America’s Best Rest Stops

An image of the Iowa 80 truck stop sign.

Taking a road trip is one of the ideal choices for weekend travelers and everyday adventurers alike. From picturesque drives through cities like New York or Chicago to the idyllic sights and sounds of a trip through a national park, there’s something to see no matter where you find yourself across the country.

But no matter how prepared you are for your next road trip , you’re going to need to make a stop or two along the way. Fortunately, just as there are countless sights to see across the country, the highways and roads are also filled with must-see attractions.

To help you make the most of every one of your pit stops, here’s a list of America’s 10 best rest stops:

The Iowa 80 Truck Stop

If you find yourself off of I-80, on exit 284 in Walcott, Iowa, you will see none other than the World’s Largest Truck Stop . Sitting 40 miles east of the University of Iowa, this rest stop truly works to live up to its namesake, having close to everything anyone on a road trip may need, including the ever-important gas station .

Hungry? Take your pick from one of eight dining options, with everything from the Iowa 80 Kitchen’s seating for 300, to a quick bite at any of the other seven dining options. Or take your pick from your usual road trip favorite snacks at their expanded convenience store.

If that wasn’t enough, you can also get a haircut, find a chiropractor, visit a dentist, do some laundry, check out a movie, get in a quick workout (and needed shower afterward), and more! That’s not including their full-service truck service center with their own ASE Certified mechanics available 24/7. There’s even a trucking museum and even non-denominational services on Sundays to go along with the 5,000 customers they see on an average day.

South of the Border

An image of the South of the Border truck stop sign in Dillon, South Carolina.

Located off of I-95 in Dillon, South Carolina, the world-famous South of the Border is our next recommended stop to make. As the self-described “favorite highway oasis & gateway to the southeast,” you’ll find plenty to do here.

From grabbing a bite at one of the four different dining options, ranging from fast food, casual dining to a full-on steakhouse. There’s even a place to grab some much-needed ice cream after dinner!

The Border is also renowned for being home to the largest indoor reptile exhibit in the United States, and it is open every day. There you can see up to 15 species of crocodilians and over 50+ different kinds of snakes and other reptiles and lizards. All the more notable is Pedroland, an amusement park with a Ferris wheel, carousel, bumper cars, mini-golf, and an arcade. The Border even has an inn and a campground if you need to stay the night .

While our next selection is a chain, there is still plenty to do or find any time you find yourself at any of the 39 Buc-ee’s locations across the country, with a majority in the Lonestar state.

Each Buc-ee’s location boasts huge restrooms, tons of gas pumps, and fully stocked delis. You can even stumble across a world record or two during your stops at a Buc-ee’s as well, with the New Braunfels location boasting the world’s largest convenience store at a whopping 66,335 square feet as well as winning Cintas’ 2012 America’s Best Restroom Award. You can even take a trip down the Katy, Texas location’s world record 255-foot long carwash .

Little America

T here’s nothing little about it. Located at Exit 198 off of I-40 in Flagstaff, Arizona, the place is not even built or designed like a typical rest stop or travel center . In fact, it is a beautiful resort with a 500-acre golf course, swimming pool, fitness center, and a fully functional business center.

Along with the expected gas station, travelers and visitors alike can find a 24/7 convenience store that comes stocked with enough books, groceries, CDs, DVDs, and souvenirs to just be a full-on mini-mall. You can even find a private shower facility (with oversized tubs!), a coin-operated laundry, a deli, and more .

R-Place Restaurant

If your hunger pangs get you while passing through Morris, Illinois, on I-80, this is the place to park for a break. R-Place is a 24/7 haven for baked goods and American comfort food, as well as being infamous for their food challenges too.

If you manage to wolf down the Ethyl Burger, a 2-pound hamburger on top of a 1 lb bun, and over a pound of toppings within one hour, it’s free! You also get some bragging rights to also go along with it. In all, R-Place’s food is so popular outside of being considered a rest stop, and they even cater in their neighborhood.

Another chain stop on our list, any one of the various Sapp Bros. locations stretching from Salt Lake City, Utah to Clearfield, Pennsylvania. In all, Sapp Bros. Travel Center is more than just a rest stop, as they even provide 24-hour roadside service to go along with the usual assortment of fuel selections, service centers, personal showers, and more .

Tamarack Tourist Information Center

Just off of Exit 45 on I-77 and I-64 in Beckley, West Virginia, the Tamarack Marketplace has everything a traveler may need to rest and recharge. They have all the expected food courts and tourist information centers, but they even have a fine arts gallery that showcases the works of over 2,800+ artists from around the world, glass blowing workshops, a conference center, and more. It has been said that more than half a million people stop at the center every year. You can even get married there too!

Jubitz Truck Stop and Travel Center

FOX Travel Channel called this spot the “World’s Classiest Truck Stop.” Judge for yourself should you wind up off of I-5 in Portland, Oregon, at the Jubitz Truck Stop and Travel Center .

Operating since 1952, today travelers can find a place to rest for the night at the Portlander Inn with over 100 rooms for anyone too tired to keep driving. If you are there just for a quick rest, they have a restaurant, convenience store, and even an 80-seat movie theater. Jubitz is also famous for the Ponderosa Lounge complete with pool tables, TVs, dance lessons, video poker, and even live music on weekends .

Bear Lake Rest Area and Overlook

A Travel Channel special claimed this rest stop has the best view in the U.S. We can see that given how it is located off of Route 89 in Bear Lake, Utah .

It is such a great spot to look at Bear Lake and the iconic mountains that circle it. As a bonus, try taking the time at this stop for some fresh air at the hiking trail. If that’s not enough fun to do, you can even make time to do some fishing, go horseback riding, learn about the history of Butch Cassidy, and more!

Trail’s Travel Center

Finally, we have a hidden gem in the show-me state, just off I-35 in Albert Lea, Minnesota at the Trail’s Travel Center . This spot has all the expected fast food restaurants, but they have a famous tavern with the largest whiskey selection in southern Minnesota at the Skol Woodfire Grill . For those breaking up a long haul, there’s a movie theater, WiFi, and church services on Sundays to go along with their 300+ truck parking spots, 10 shower facilities, and other unique amenities .

20 "Don't-Miss" Stops On The Ideal California Road Trip, According To The Travelers Who've Already Crossed It Off Their Bucket Lists

You're not even leaving the state — but you'll feel like you're hopping between countries...

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

As the third-largest state in the US, there's no denying that California is absolutely massive. That's why many people swear that the best way to see everything the Golden State has to offer is by planning an epic road trip. I rounded up the most jaw-dropping stops and helpful insights from Redditors and BuzzFeed readers who've already crossed a California road trip off their bucket list — so whether you're actively planning a getaway or just daydreaming, you can make the most of it. Here's everything to see, eat, and do along the way.

Aerial view of a curvy coastal road with a car, sea on the right and hills on the left at sunset

1. "While you’re in San Francisco, I highly recommend crossing the bridge to Marin and Sausalito. It’s so pretty over there, and you'll be awarded with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge."

2. "Santa Cruz is worth stopping through for a good, long afternoon. If you like to hike, there are some great trails near the town of Felton, where you will find beautiful redwood trees."

— u/Spare-Arrival8983

3. "In Solvang, be prepared to eat like a hobbit the entire time you are there. You WILL have breakfast, then a second breakfast, then elevensies, lunch, afternoon tea, and so on. Go hungry. SERIOUSLY."

Sunlit street with pedestrians near a building with a windmill structure on its roof

4. "When driving to San Luis Obispo for a weekend getaway, I found an absolute gem in Buellton called Industrial Eats. It was absolutely amazing, so good that I stopped by again on my way back. 10/10 recommend."

5. "IMO, Santa Barbara is the best place in SoCal and an ideal starting point for any road trip. It’s pedestrian-friendly, has beautiful architecture, and has great bars and restaurants galore."

Beachfront view with palm trees and mountain background, with a modern building in the center

— u/tee2green

6. "If you are going on California Highway 1 (aka The Pacific Coast Highway), make sure you look at the road closure maps in advance. The PCH often has closures for landslides. US Highway 101 is the workaround."

— u/Mikelowe93

7. "If you plan on visiting Big Sur, spend most of your time in the north end. There's way more to see and do here. Visit Monterey and Carmel and then head south to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Andrew Molera State Park. These spots will give you a perfect feel for the area with their redwoods and beaches. The drive there is absolutely spectacular. The south end of Big Sur is kind of a mess with closures."

8. "Consider visiting Pinnacles, a lesser-known National Park roughly 100 miles south of San Francisco. It's home to tons of very cool geological formations."

Rocky spires and trees in a mountainous landscape

9. "Eat some street tacos! California has great Mexican food all over, but if you're driving the PCH from San Francisco to Los Angeles , there are lots of good street vendors just off the highway."

10. "Half Moon Bay is criminally underrated. The entire drive along the Pacific area is absolutely stunning, especially if you take the Skyline route. The woods, the fresh air, and the whole vibe are all incredible. A pit stop at Alice's Restaurant is a must."

Sunset at a beach with people and horses walking along the shore, mountains in the distance

— youwishyouwereme007

11. "To hit Yosemite and Tahoe, I suggest taking a nice big loop from Los Angeles on US 395 along the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It’s a beautiful desert drive, and there's almost never any traffic. June Lake is a lovely small town just off this route with a great brewery. And Mammoth Lakes is also a popular stop. You'll have to take a detour to get to Yosemite Valley, but it’s totally worth it, IMO."

12. "Muir Woods is across the Golden Gate Bridge, and it's amazing. It's a must-see if you're anywhere near San Fransico. It feels totally alien, and there are not many forests like it on Earth. I can't recommend going there enough."

Pathway through towering redwood forest with fence and person walking

— u/Overman112

13. "Visit anywhere in Humboldt County for its gorgeous rugged coastline and amazing forests. The landscape is truly awe-inspiring. I went to college there and then stayed for a while. It's a breathtakingly beautiful place."

Serenity at the beach with waves gently touching the shore, surrounded by cliffs and trees at twilight

— teamglatz3

14. "To make Los Angeles a more enjoyable experience, try to plan your day out around a specific locale within the city. That way, you won't spend half of that day driving in traffic. Look for other stuff to eat, do, and see near your 'must-see' attraction."

— u/FeelinIrieMon

15. "If you find yourself with extra time, I highly suggest going to San Diego. In my opinion, this city is much better than Los Angeles. There are lots of things to do (some are totally free), like Balboa Park, Friendship Garden, Torrey Pines, and seeing sea lions and seals at La Jolla Cove. The city has excellent breweries and great Mexican food."

Aerial view of a coastal area with a sandy beach, waves, a road, and houses

16. "If you can get into Nepenthe in Big Sur, it's a must. But even if you can't get a table, grab a coffee and see the view."

— u/taperwaves

17. "Visit Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks instead of Yosemite. These parks are less crowded and just as spectacular."

— u/ExamNo368

18. "Death Valley is so surreal and beautiful in its own way. There's Badwater Basin, Artists Palette, sand dunes, and super clear skies for stargazing. It really feels like you're on a different planet. Most people make the mistake of visiting when it's too hot, but November to February is *perfect*, and there are a bunch of ghost towns worth visiting if you're road-tripping!"

Sunset over rugged desert terrain with layered rock formations

19. "Pismo and Paso Robles are well worth a trip. You'll find pretty rolling hills, wine country, and lower-cost dining options, along with some great camping and hiking."

20. "If visiting Yosemite, I’d highly recommend getting a backcountry permit so that you can experience the landscape away from the crowds. We were able to get a lake to ourselves two nights in a row in the Tuolumne Meadows area in July. If you stick to Yosemite Valley, you will experience it with crowds."

The 14 Best Stops To Make On Your Trip Along Route 66

Route 66 drawn on road

Out of all the crisscrossing roads across America, there is one stretch of highway that practically everyone knows — Route 66. Sometimes dubbed the "Mother Road" and "Main Street of America," Route 66 became famous in part due to its constant portrayal in music, television, and books. The other reason for the roadway's notoriety was that it was one of the few highways that were actively advertised, known for its slogan as being the "shortest, best and most scenic route" to get from Chicago, Illinois all the way to Los Angeles, California .

Today, the 2,400-mile journey along Route 66 technically isn't considered a highway anymore, but it's still one of the most legendary road trips in the United States. If anything, travelers have only become more eager to hit the faux highway, spending over $132 million on Route 66 every year. One of the big reasons it's remained such a popular adventure across America is the countless intriguing, entertaining, or even odd stops to make along the drive. Some of the most unique places to see in the entire country are located near this famous strip of road. Out of all of the possibilities, these are the 14 best stops to make on your trip along Route 66.

Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum (Illinois)

Most people start their drive on this iconic road from Illinois, so why not kick it off with a visit to the Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum? It's home to thousands of different Route 66 relics and memorabilia pieces. Some of the coolest (and possibly most random) are booths from the world's very first Steak n' Shake and an antique Volkswagen hippie van that once belonged to a Route 66 legend. It's quite the experience.

However, the most useful thing for travelers at the museum is that they provide visitors with a slew of resources, tips, and recommendations for the famed road trip. That's why it's one of the best stops to kick off your Route 66 journey. The Route 66 Fall of Fame & Museum is open every day of the week except holidays and it's totally free! Making it the perfect place to check out for travelers on a budget .

Gateway Arch (Missouri)

This isn't just one of the most distinctive sites to see along Route 66, it's also one of the most recognizable monuments in all of Missouri. It also happens to be the tallest monument in the United States at 630 feet high. It's easy to understand why so many travelers hitting the open road for Route 66 stop at this record-breaking attraction.

First, saunter up to the monument from the ground level, so you can experience how truly massive it is from below. Then, you can take a ride on the monument's tram all the way up the 63 storiesto the top. From all the way up on the peak of the arch, you'll be able to see 30 miles into the distance over the midwest. If you can manage to sneak up there right before sunset, you're in for an impressive natural show.

There are a few important things to know about getting access to this beautiful experience, though. The tram ride up the Gateway Arch is actually free, but you will need a ticket and they sell out fast because of the attraction's popularity. Visitors should nab their tickets in advance on Gateway Arch's official website or by calling them at (877)-982-1010. There is also a 91-acre National Park around the arch to check out with a bunch of fun activities for kids and nice spots for walking off a bit of the Route 66 drive.

Meramec Caverns (Missouri)

Route 66 attractions take you everywhere, from hundreds of feet in the air to all the way on the opposite side of the spectrum deep underground. Nature lovers and adventure seekers alike will swoon at the Missouri Meramec Caverns right off Route 66. It took millions of years for this 4.6-mile complex of eerily beautiful caverns to form. Today, you have the opportunity to wander a piece of ancient natural history in all its rainbow-lit glory.

After taking the plunge underground, you'll find some of the scarcest and biggest cave formations on the planet. It truly shows you how much of the world remains a mystery from your everyday life. Tours explaining the background and significance of the cave system in deeper detail are available for $27 per adult. There are also a handful of other intriguing things to do at Meramec Caverns, including watching the light shows against the formations, rock climbing, panning for gold, and even zip lining.

Pop's 66 (Oklahoma)

One of the most quirky, but extremely lovable and classic stops along the Route 66 road trip is Pop's 66. Located in Arcadia, Oklahoma, it will be hard to miss this restaurant/soda store thanks to its enormous, colorful light-up soda bottle on the front lawn. It's, fittingly, 66 feet tall and actually the largest soda bottle in the whole world. So, you'll be able to spot it from a mile away.

When you're jonesing for a highway snack, Pop's will satisfy every craving from breakfast to late dinner. They're open daily from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. and serve up crazy good burgers, milkshakes, and egg sandwiches. However, that's not the thing that will stick in your mind after stopping by the notorious Pop's 66.

The spot is most well-known for is their wide variety of soda — emphasis on "wide." The store carries over 700 different kinds of soda. This isn't your run-of-the-mill Coca-Cola and Sprite offerings, either. Pop's 66 has mind-bending flavors you'll never find anywhere else, like coffee, lemon meringue pie, buffalo wings, beef jerky, and dog drool. You could spend hours exploring the wacky varieties of soda available at this one-of-a-kind shop and it's a must-see along Route 66.

The Blue Whale of Catoosa (Oklahoma)

When you search "Route 66 attractions" on the internet, one of the first places to always pop up is the Blue Whale of Catoosa, Oklahoma. The free-to-visit concrete whale is one of the more random places to stop along the Route 66 drive, but it's a quintessential attraction on Route 66 nonetheless. The friendly-faced Blue Whale sculpture is 80 feet long and a towering 20 feet tall. It was originally built over 50 years ago by a very determined and creative zoologist named Hugh Davis. He spent years developing the art installation next to a little pond, imagining it as a place his grandchildren would one day play in.

As it turns out, it would bring joy to way more people than just Hugh's family. Over the past five decades, the Blue Whale has become a world-known tourist attraction for Oklahoma and is still enjoyed by countless families. People are so supportive of the Blue Whale of Catoosa that it's even recently been getting some renovations to keep it in tip-top shape.

Cadillac Ranch (Texas)

It's rare to guarantee that an attraction is unlike anything you've ever seen before , but that statement rings true for Cadillac Ranch in Texas. The Cadillac Ranch is a completely free, funky art installation and roadside attraction consisting of 10 semi-buried cars covered in vibrant graffiti. It sounds like something out of a twisted dream, but it's very real life on Route 66. It's a favorite stop along Route 66 for photographers because of the colorful burst of color it brings to an otherwise barren desert.

The slightly confusing site was conceived from the mind of a local millionaire named Stanley Marsh who enlisted the help of several artists to bring it to life. Although the cars started off in their original prime and proper condition, people started vandalizing the cars with graffiti. As it turns out, Mr. Marsh actually preferred the new psychedelic effects of the visitor's spray paint additions. Since then, the cars have been completely caked with colors left behind by travelers past and visitors are encouraged to leave their mark behind by contributing a piece of spray paint art. You can even buy spray paint onsite from a souvenir truck.

Glenrio Ghost Town (New Mexico/Texas)

A ghost town might not be the first place you think will end up on your Route 66 itinerary, but this road trip is full of surprises. Sitting on the border right between Texas and New Mexico, you'll find the bones of a ghost town named Glenrio right off Route 66. There isn't much left of this railroad town after time has eaten away at it. All that remains is an old cafe, a motel, a deceased Texaco service station, a post office, and a few other structures.

It's a spooky reminder of how quickly a town can go from filled with life to completely desolate. Visitors are welcome to drive through the abandoned ghost town and even stop along the way to snap the occasional photograph of Glenrio's architectural cadavers. However, it's important to keep in mind that these places are still owned by someone out there and most don't want visitors entering the structures. Respect the area and any "no trespassing" signs.

Blue Swallow Motel (New Mexico)

By the time travelers reach New Mexico on a Route 66 road trip, they're usually exhausted and desperately in need of a relaxing night at a comfortable hotel . Luckily, you can have a place to rest your head peacefully and stop by an essential Route 66 attraction when you visit the Blue Swallow Motel. This little vintage-style motel has been taking in wayward travelers from Route 66 since 1939 and has no plans of ceasing any time soon. It's legally considered a historic place by the National Register, so its position is pretty solidified as a Route 66 legend.

The rates range from $95 to $150 depending on the size of the room, making this retro hotel affordable for just about any budget . Even if you're not planning on crashing the night at the Blue Swallow, it's still worth stopping by just to see the place. It really does make you feel like you've been plucked out of the 21st century and transported back 50 years or so. Plus, the Blue Swallow Motel offers one of the most iconic spots to get a photo of the Route 66 sign painted on the asphalt with the hotel's bright, neon sign in the background.

The Blue Hole (New Mexico)

After spending hours on end trapped in a tin car with an endless road stretching ahead, you probably need a little retreat into nature. On Route 66, one of the most entertaining natural attractions to visit is the Blue Hole in New Mexico. The Blue Hole isn't your everyday, standard swimming hole that mostly appeals to young children and families, though. It's a miraculous luridly blue oasis smack dab in the middle of the desert that's great for swimming but mainly known as a prime scuba diving destination. Would you have expected to find scuba diving along Route 66?

If you want to partake in Blue Hole's top activity, you'll need to get yourself a one-week Scuba permit for $20 that you can pick up right at the attraction's dive shop and a skin-diving permit. You can also rent diving suits, goggles, and tanks at the dive shop. Visitors are welcome to dive all year round and winter is actually the most popular time to explore this aquatic world.

If diving isn't quite your thing, there are a bunch of other fun things to do in Blue Hole, too. You can go swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and even cliff jumping if you have a bit of thrill-seeker in you. When you're thoroughly knackered from all the water activities, the nearby city of Santa Rosa has tons of delicious places to eat.

Petrified Forest National Park (Arizona)

Out of all the stops along Route 66, the Petrified Forest National Park is something that you must see with your own eyes to believe. Located in the desert of Arizona, this park is unlike any other you've been to before, distinguished by its petrified wood that paints the entire landscape in a wild, rainbow gradient effect. The petrified result came from different minerals, like volcanic ash, being sucked into the wood and crystallizing over thousands of years as the wood disintegrates.

The range of colors here makes it one of the strangest, albeit stunning, national parks in the United States. That's probably why it's one of the most-visited national parks in the country and one of the top stops along Route 66. Visitors are welcome to hike, picnic, bike, take a tour, horseback ride, or even pitch a tent and camp for the night at the Petrified Forest. If you have a camera, you'll definitely want to break it out for this place.

Hackberry General Store (Arizona)

Wait! Don't drive right on past this little shop that looks like it might be on its last leg. At first glance, the Hackberry General Store might look like a jumbled mess, but it's actually one of the most cherished stops along Route 66. The store was given new life by a guy named Bob Waldmire in the 1990s, a well-known figure around Route 66 due to his family's legacy as the inventors of corndogs.

As the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. Even though it looks long abandoned, this nostalgic pitstop possesses a huge collection of interesting mementos from the 1950s to explore, like gas pumps, signs, and vintage cars. Plus, the Hackberry General Store is still open for business if you want to do a bit of shopping. They sell tons of unusual and fun souvenirs from pins to pocket watches.

Barringer Crater (Arizona)

You never realize what a tiny speck you are in the universe until you come face to face with something absolutely massive like the Barringer Crater in Arizona along Route 66. This natural wonder was formed over 50,000 years ago from a piece of an asteroid colliding with the earth, leaving behind a cavity that's almost a mile long. It's a one-of-a-kind stop both along Route 66 and in the United States in general.

Travelers along Route 66 can explore the area around Barringer Crater by wandering the trails around the outer edges of the giant depression. It's wild to be right next to an impact that powerful. To get a sense of just how forceful the impact was, you can watch a 3D animation recreation of it at the on-site Meteor Crater & Barringer Space Museum. When you're done walking around the edges of the crater under the Arizona heat, you can check out the museum's 24 intriguing exhibits to learn more about space.

Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch (California)

The Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch in California took glass bottles, stuff that most people would consider to be trash, and converted them into a priceless treasure of a roadside attraction near Route 66. This makeshift ranch is a maze of colorful bottle trees that might as well be a DIY stain-glass masterpiece when the light catches just right. You really do find the funkiest works of art along the famed Route 66.

The odd Bottle Tree Ranch was a passion project built by an artist named Elmer Long, who had turned collecting bottles with his dad as a kid into a lifelong hobby. Sadly, the original creator passed away a few years ago, but his bottle ranch lives on and still welcomes Route 66 travelers with open arms. It doesn't cost any money to visit Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch, but friendly donations are always accepted. Today, the extensive Bottle Tree Ranch remains one of the most unique and iconic places to visit and take photographs on Route 66.

Santa Monica Pier (California)

All good things must come to an end and that includes your Route 66 road trip. Before you call it quits on the adventure, though, finish it off the right way by stopping by the Santa Monica Pier. The Santa Monica Pier in California is the technical end point of Route 66, but once you arrive, there is still excitement to come. If you're traveling Route 66 from west to east, you can just start your trip with the pier instead.

At Santa Monica Pier, you can get to know the area's rich history or spend the afternoon at the amusement park to ride on the beloved Pacific Wheel right on the coast. If you're feeling sleepy after embarking on such a long road trip, you can opt for a more relaxing day of fishing, lounging on Santa Monica State Beach, and tasting some of the pier's well-known desserts. Conclude your day at Santa Monica Pier by stopping to see the "End of The Trail" sign for Route 66. You can easily find it by walking straight on the pier, past Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, but before the Playland Arcade.

Airline stopover flights: A complete guide to maximizing your flight itinerary

Jordi Lippe-McGraw

Editor's Note

Want to explore new places without spending extra? That's what airline stopover programs are all about.

Picture this: You're on your way to a far-off destination with Qatar Airways or Emirates . You have a layover in a place like Doha or Dubai. Instead of waiting at the airport, you can step out and see the city. And guess what? It might not even cost you much, thanks to these cool stopover deals that airlines offer.

You could be wandering the streets of Doha today and then off to Bangkok tomorrow. Or, maybe you're soaking up Lisbon, Portugal's vibes before heading to Accra, Ghana. Have you ever considered visiting Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on your way to one of South Africa's cities or national parks? These programs can unlock that kind of adventure.

Why are they great? First off, they're a bargain. You're essentially getting two trips for the price of one. Plus, airlines win, too. They get more tourists to their home cities and bet on you loving it so much that you'll come back for more.

Thinking of a two-for-one travel hack? You're in the right spot. We've put together a no-fuss guide on airline stopover programs, focusing on the deals for paid tickets. If you're using points or miles, don't worry — there's a guide for that, too.

Copa Airlines

travel stop the top

Through the new Panama stopover option, Copa Airlines passengers can spend between 24 hours and seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City. While there's no extra charge to book a Panama stopover, you'll still need to cover some expenses, like an overnight hotel, if needed.

Fortunately, hotels are heavily discounted, and you can select the tour itinerary that most appeals to you on the stopover website . I, for one, like the Panama City and Beach tour , which includes six nights split across two high-end hotels. This tour covers all food and drinks, transportation and hotels for $1,242 per person.

If you're flying Emirates, why not take the opportunity to explore the United Arab Emirates for a few extra days along the way?

To take advantage of the airline's Dubai Stopover program, use the advanced search feature on the airline's website and ensure you have built a stopover into your itinerary. You can do this by building a multicity itinerary with a stop in Dubai.

After booking, contact your local Emirates office for assistance reserving a stopover package, which can include add-ons like a room at one of over 100 partner hotels, transportation, meals, visa arrangements (Emirates can help with 96-hour or 30-day visas) and tourism activities.

You can also visit the airline's Hotels & Visas desk at Terminal 3 in Dubai International Airport (DXB). All arrangements come at an added cost but might still be worthwhile since the airline does all the legwork for you and has secured special rates for its customers.

Etihad Airways

travel stop the top

Etihad currently offers two different stopover options in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

After booking a multicity itinerary with a stopover of at least 24 hours that does not originate or terminate in Abu Dhabi, you can use your booking number to enjoy discounted rates at top hotels in the area.

The duration of each stopover is capped at a 24-hour stay. Depending on the flight itinerary, a maximum of two nights can be booked under this offer. Reserve either a free one-night stay or a discounted stay of up to six nights at one of over 20 premium hotels. These include the Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri and the Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl.

Alternatively, you can opt for a one- or two-night stay at one of over 10 other lower-priced properties. The airline also provides discounts on activities and tours.

Ethiopian Airlines

Transit times through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) in Ethiopia can be long. So, if your layover is between eight and 24 hours, Ethiopian Airlines will arrange a complimentary hotel stay and airport transfers, provided you have the necessary visa or are eligible for a transit visa upon arrival, which the airline will facilitate.

Take in the northern lights and some art nouveau architecture with a stopover of up to five days when traveling through Helsinki Airport (HEL) on Finnair.

You'll have to pay for your own accommodations and activities , but your ticket shouldn't cost more when adding extra time in the city. The airline partners with Visit Finland to provide stopover travel inspiration, accommodations, tour packages and more.

Iberia's Hola Madrid stopover program allows passengers to spend between one and six nights in Madrid at no extra charge. You can also obtain discounts on hotel stays with Melia, airport transfers, entrance to museums such as the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum and a two-day complimentary transport card.

A lot of airlines have added Iceland service, making it easy to connect through Keflavik Airport (KEF) from the U.S. to other points in Europe. So, you might want to check out Icelandair's stopover program, which is considered the pioneer of airline stopover packages.

You can stay for one to seven nights at no added ticket cost. When booking, select the stopover option and how many days you'd like to spend exploring the land of fire and ice (up to one week). For inspiration on what to do during your stopover, check out Iceland Travel , where you can view various excursions and activities.

Fly Oman Air via its home airport of Muscat International Airport (MCT) between international destinations — the airline doesn't fly to the U.S. — and you may be eligible to book a stopover of two or three nights with one night free at partner hotels through Oman Air Holidays .

There are a few terms and conditions to be aware of, such as booking a round-trip international itinerary, but the stipulations aren't too complicated.

Qatar Airways

travel stop the top

Although you'll need to check some of the blackout dates, Qatar Airways offers serious discounts on stopover packages, including hotels, meals, city tours and activities, for passengers transiting through Doha's Hamad International Airport (DOH).

You can even book themed packages, such as a beach vacation and a luxury trip with a private desert safari. You can book a ticket with a stopover using this page on Qatar Airways' website.

Stay from one to four nights in Switzerland with the Stopover Switzerland program. First, book your multicity itinerary through Swiss' Stopover Switzerland booking portal , then select your travel package for the number of nights you'll stay.

Packages are bundled by cities and categories like "luxury," "taste of Switzerland" and "best of Switzerland," with pricing that starts at 180 Swiss francs ($185). The arrangements include accommodations and free public transportation across Switzerland, plus a passbook with over 100 discounts on attractions, mountain trains, dining and more.

TAP Air Portugal

Stay in Lisbon or Porto for up to five days at no additional charge during a stopover in Portugal. Start by seeing if your flight is eligible for a stopover. If it is, select which city you'd like to visit, then choose whether you'd like to schedule your visit during your inbound or outbound journey and specify how long you'll stay.

Once your stopover is booked, you can use TAP Air Portugal's mobile app for discounts on hotels and attractions, travel inspiration, guides and more.

Turkish Airlines

travel stop the top

Turkish Airlines offers one of the best stopover programs out there. Business-class passengers with a stopover of 20 hours or more can stay in a luxury hotel in Turkey for up to two days. Economy-class passengers can stay at a slightly more affordable hotel for one day. Your stopover must be longer than 20 hours to qualify for a free hotel room.

Once you've reserved your flights, send an email (find the right email address based on the destination here ) — including your name, reservation code or ticket number, dates needed for accommodations, preferred room type (single, double or triple), telephone number and email address — at least 72 hours before your first flight.

If your stopover is between six and 24 hours, you can explore Istanbul with a free city tour, including bus transportation and meals. You don't need to reserve ahead of time. Just head to the Touristanbul desk upon arrival at Istanbul Airport (IST) to register. For more information on the different tours offered, go to the airline's Touristanbul page . As always, make sure to check visa requirements before traveling.

Once you've finalized your flights, you can contact Japan Airlines customer service to inquire about available stopover packages, which may include discounted hotel stays, transportation and sightseeing tours.

For one-way Advantage awards , travelers can add one complimentary stopover. For round-trip Advantage awards, travelers can add two complimentary stopovers. Additional stopovers (up to three per award ticket) can be added for $100 each. Stopovers can only be added online if the route is eligible.

Select the multicity booking option on the Singapore Airlines website to arrange a stopover.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

travel stop the top

Royal Jordanian Airlines offers a generous stopover program to explore the magical sites of Jordan. Whether you're traveling to the Middle East or connecting to other destinations, you can extend your stay to discover the historical sites, natural wonders and cultural treasures of Jordan.

Pick the multicity booking option when reserving your flights on the Royal Jordanian Airlines website to incorporate a stopover in your itinerary.

Bottom line

Building a stopover into your itinerary is a great cost-effective way to see another country or city during your trip. Luckily, many airlines and tourism boards are more than happy to help travelers make the most of even a short time on the ground to explore a new destination and hopefully pique their interest in another visit.

Even if your airline doesn't publish or promote a stopover program of its own, you can always explore your options by performing multicity searches and pricing out tickets before making your own hotel and transportation arrangements. If in doubt, you can always call the airline to ask what your choices might be.

Hawaiian Airlines, for instance, lets travelers flying to or from the airline's nine international destinations enjoy a free stopover in Honolulu on each leg, whether outbound or return. The only stipulation is that travelers must use the multicity option when booking on Hawaiian's website . So, you might have more opportunities to see another part of the world on your next vacation thank you think.

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 airliners sit on the tarmac

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

4 travel tips to put your mind at ease during your next trip

travel stop the top

The season of summer holiday travel is just around the corner.

You might find yourself heading to one of the U.S.’s many national parks, exploring a historic European city or jetting off somewhere tropical, like the Maldives.

That all sounds like fun, but unfortunately, travel mishaps may also happen. Luggage gets lost, passports get misplaced and phones may not work at international destinations when they aren't connected to Wi-Fi.

To avoid the headaches and prepare for whatever may come your way (or what accidentally gets left behind), follow these simple tips.

Watch this video to see the four things you should do before your next trip.

Pre-Travel Tips

All you need to get travel-ready is your smartphone.

  • Take pictures.

Take pictures and screenshots of the important items and documents before you leave for your trip.

This would include:

  • Your luggage
  • The photo page of your passport
  • Your ID cards
  • Any travel-related confirmations
  • Location and contact details for the places you’re staying

Creating an album on your phone or marking the images as favorites will make it easier to find them should you need them.

It couldn’t hurt to also share these pictures with a trusted loved one, like a significant other or close friend.

  • Turn on Notify When Left Behind

Turn on Notify When Left Behind if you use Apple products.

The feature, available on some iPhones, iPads, Macs, and AirPods, will notify you if you are separated from your items, like if you forget your AirPods in your hotel room.

To turn Notify When Left Behind on or off, open the “Find My” app, select the device and then toggle the setting on or off.

  • Tell your credit card company about your plans

Have you ever had your card payment declined when paying for something on a trip? That’s probably because your credit card company is picking up unusual activity and flagging it as suspicious.

Prevent that from happening by informing your credit card company of any upcoming domestic or international travel by setting a travel notification.

Many credit card companies allow you to set the notification online or via the app, though some companies may not require one at all.

  • Check international phone plans

If you want to use your phone when you're not connected to Wi-Fi while traveling, see what international phone plans your mobile carrier offers that fit your budget. An international plan will allow you to do things like make and receive phone calls, access social media and find directions as long as you have cell service. Without a plan, those functions will only be available when the device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Bonus tip, you can download maps to use offline and easily navigate a new place!

When creating an ideal sleeping environment, you might think of lighting, temperature and sound — but what about food?

What you eat during the day can have a surprising impact on how well you sleep at night, according to experts.

“Food choice is an essential consideration for ensuring good sleep quality. Some types of food promote sleep while others may cause sleep disruption,” Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib, head sleep expert at Wesper, a sleep analysis company in New York, told Fox News Digital.

Here’s what to know.

Signs that food is interfering with sleep

If after eating you’re struggling to fall asleep, waking up often during the night or experiencing heartburn, acid reflux or indigestion, your food choices could be the culprit, according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, chief medical adviser at Sleepopolis in California.

Other warning signs include experiencing restlessness or stomach discomfort, needing more frequent bathroom breaks at night, or waking up feeling groggy or unrested.

“Having intense dreams or nightmares or noticing changes in your usual sleep routine” are other indications that food could be interfering with sleep, Dasgupta said.

Depressed woman awake in the night.

“Paying attention to these cues can help you figure out if certain foods or drinks are messing with your sleep quality, so you can make adjustments as needed for better rest,” he said.

Best foods to eat for quality sleep

Foods that encourage better sleep include meals with a good amount of lean protein, meals that are high in fiber, and meals that are rich in complex carbohydrates, according to Rohrscheib.

“This food combination keeps us feeling full and satisfied throughout the night and prevents us from waking up from hunger,” she said.

Depressed senior woman lying in bed cannot sleep from insomnia

“It also reduces the risk of indigestion and heartburn.”

Foods containing dairy are especially beneficial, she said, because they contain tryptophan, an amino acid that is essential for the production of serotonin and melatonin, two chemicals needed for sleep.

Bananas can also help promote sleep , according to Dasgupta.

“They contain magnesium and tryptophan, which can help you relax and boost production of sleep-inducing hormones,” he told Fox News Digital.

Healthy eating and diet concepts.

Almonds also provide magnesium for muscle relaxation; they contain protein and healthy fats to keep blood sugar levels stable, he said.

“Cherries contain natural melatonin, potentially helping to regulate your sleep-wake cycles,” Dasgupta said.

Oatmeal is also a sleep-friendly food.

“Its complex carbohydrates increase serotonin levels, while its melatonin content helps to regulate sleep,” said Dasgupta.

As we all hear around Thanksgiving time, turkey is rich in tryptophan, facilitating the production of serotonin and melatonin, Dasgupta noted.

“Kiwi is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and serotonin, all of which support sleep pattern regulation,” he said.

Dasgupta also recommends eating Greek yogurt to promote improved sleep, as its calcium content assists in the body’s use of tryptophan for melatonin production, while its protein helps maintain blood sugar levels.

“Finally, warm milk, with its tryptophan content and comforting warmth, can help you relax” for a good night’s sleep, he said.

Those who are lactose-intolerant can opt for warm almond milk.

Foods that can disrupt sleep

Some foods are more likely to cause indigestion and heartburn, which makes it difficult to fall asleep and maintain sleep, according to Rohrscheib.

“This includes foods with high fat or acid content, foods containing caffeine, or spicy foods,” she said.

Dasgupta agreed that eating heavy or spicy foods ahead of bedtime can cause stomach discomfort, heartburn and acid reflux, which can make it harder to settle down comfortably.

Various fresh dairy products.

“ Greasy or heavy meals take longer to digest , which can leave you feeling uncomfortable and disrupt your sleep,” he advised.

Caffeine is also a common culprit in sleep disruption — experts recommend avoiding it in the hours leading up to bedtime.

“Any food containing caffeine, even small amounts, should be avoided to prevent sleep disruption,” Rohrscheib said. “This includes coffee, some teas, sodas, energy drinks and some chocolates.”

"Any food containing caffeine, even small amounts, should be avoided to prevent sleep disruption," Rohrscheib said.

It’s best to abstain from alcohol as well, Dasgupta said. “While it might seem like a nightcap, it messes with your sleep cycles, leading to worse sleep quality.”

Highly processed foods and foods containing high amounts of sugar cause a quick spike in glucose levels and increase the risk of a “blood sugar crash,” also known as hypoglycemia, Rohrscheib warned.

“When we’re hypoglycemic, our brain will attempt to wake us up to eat more food to normalize our blood glucose levels,” she said. “Thus, these foods should be avoided before bedtime.”

Group of Sweet and Salty Snacks, Perfect for Binge Watching.

“Lastly,  processed or junk foods , loaded with additives and unhealthy fats, can throw off your sleep patterns,” Dasgupta added.

Portion size is also a factor in sleep quality, both experts agreed.

“Regardless of the type of meal you eat, consuming too much and making yourself over-full is likely to make you uncomfortable and cause poor sleep quality,” Rohrscheib said.

These Are the Best Frequent Flier Programs of 2024

Only the best will do.

travel stop the top

d3sign/Getty Images

Summer vacation is just around the corner, which means many of you will be taking to the skies to get to your dream destinations. But, before you do, make sure to sign up for a frequent flier program to ensure you maximize those travel benefits. But, which one should you be signing up for exactly? WalletHub has the answer.

The personal finance website released its report on the 2024 Best Frequent Flier Programs . The report ranks the 10 largest domestic airlines based on 21 key metrics, including everything from the "value of a point/mile" to "blackout dates for reward flights." The team also created three distinct consumer profiles, a "Light Flier," who spends roughly $355 on annual airline travel, an "Average Flier," who spends roughly $3,736 on annual airline travel, and a "Frequent Flier," who spends $7,117 on annual airline travel, so see how each program pans out for every traveler.

After looking at all the data, WalletHub named Alaska Airline's program the best in the business.

"Alaska Mileage Plan is the best frequent flier program of 2024, beating last year’s winner United MileagePlus," WalletHub wrote in its findings. The airline won thanks to its policy to never allow miles to expire, its high number of destinations and partner airlines, and the value earned by every category of traveler (light, average, and frequent).

It was joined in the top five programs by United Airlines and its MileagePlus program in second, followed by Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles, Hawaiian Airlines' HawaiianMiles, and American Airlines' AAdvantage.

The good news is, no matter which program you choose you'll likely be winning. According to WalletHub, seven of the 10 largest airlines are "offering more rewards value in 2024 than in 2023. On average, the top 10 airlines are offering 18 percent more value than they did last year."

"For any good and sustainable airline rewards program, it has to be a win-win situation. Consumers get perks such as priority boarding and free check-in luggage; gradually, they become more loyal to that specific airline, make more purchases, and spread more positive Word of Mouth over time," Wan Yang, an associate professor and associate editor of International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, The Collins College of Hospitality Management, shared in the findings about what makes one program better than another. "Meanwhile, they will accumulate more miles with that company, which makes 'switching brands' more costly. Eventually, the airline company will gain great long-term benefits from those loyal consumers, also known as more 'Lifetime Value' from consumers."

Beyond the study, WalletHub also shared a custom calculator that allows travelers to personalize the results of the best frequent flier programs based on their own budget. This way, you can always pick the one that's right for you.
