How to throw a travel themed party

How to Throw An Amazing Travel-Themed Party

travelling party ideas

Once upon a time in what seems like a previous life, I spent a decade working in the event industry, mostly as an event stylist. It was only natural that when someone asked me about travel themed party ideas, I had a lot of thoughts on the matter. Here I walk you through throwing a travel-inspired bash from the invitation, all the way through to the party favours.

More than just travel

Ok, you’ve decided on a travel theme but there are a few more things to consider first. There are lots of different aspects of travel to channel and it will help to narrow your theme down to something more specific. Think about who or what the party is celebrating and let that guide you. Is it a bridal shower, retirement, birthday or going away party? If so, you may need to consider that special someone’s age, gender, interests and style along with that of your guests. Here are just a few ways to interpret a travel theme:

  • Vintage travel – Think old maps and leather suitcases, muted pastels and brass compasses.
  • Transport – Planes, trains… Imagine a glamorous Orient Express do, or a whimsical hot air balloon theme taking you anywhere you dream.
  • Focus on a destination – Create a Hawaiian Luau to a Mexican Fiesta, an Irish shindig to a French-themed fete.
  • National flags – Casual vexillologists will love showing off their knowledge of world flags, a great conversation-starting theme.
  • Around the World in Cocktails – A cocktail party exploring the origins of your favourite mixed beverages.
  • Travel Trivia Tournament – Can be a romantic night for two or extend to a bigger group of adults.

Travel themed party invitations

The key to a great themed party is weaving the theme into every aspect, start to finish. Sometimes it’s easy and obvious, other times it takes a little more creativity. Let’s begin with invitation ideas. Your invitation will set the tone for the entire party, so consider how it works in with the overall look and feel. Don’t forget to list the following on your invites:

  • Date and time
  • Theme (especially if it’s fancy dress)
  • Dress code (as above)
  • Set catering expectations, don’t leave your guests hanging wondering if they should eat beforehand or worse, leaving early because they’re hungry (e.g. finger food provided).
  • What people may bring along (e.g. BYO favourite alcoholic beverage, or bring along a dessert to share)
  • RSVP date and contact details (ask people to mention any dietary restrictions e.g. vegetarian, gluten free etc)

Food & drink

First, consider the style of the party including the number of guests, space and budget. Is it going to be standing room only, in which case you’ll provide finger food on trays or set up a buffet? Will it be a more intimate, sit down affair? Do you have the seating required? Also, are you buying or making the food or a combination of both? What are your capabilities?

Now get creative. Are you going to theme the food around a particular destination? Alternatively, maybe you go for regular party food, but present it with a travel twist such as aeroplane cake toppers or served on map lined tray. Here are some examples of both:

Travel themed party decorations

travelling party ideas

When decorating for a party, you can go from 0 to 100 in less than 10 seconds, so make sure you have a budget in mind. Think about things you already own and can repurpose, or if you’re buying something new, how can you use it again? Are you a crafty DIY type who loves to make your own custom pieces, or do you just want something simple and out of the box? Here are travel themed party decoration ideas:

Here are a few sources for travel themed party decor:

Etsy are especially great for vintage-style travel party decor using maps to create items like bunting, favours and seating charts. Amazon is also towing the trend for vintage map-inspired travel party decorations. Oriental Trading takes a little more scouring to unearth their classier travel themed decorations, but there are some great pieces like world globe balloons and pastel suitcases for centrepieces.

For destination themes, check out Meri Meri for tropical decor ,  Coterie for Italian-tile inspired vibes and Sweet LuLu for a Mexican fiesta.

Don’t forget your local thrift store, Facebook Marketplace, eBay and for basic items like vases, candle holders etc. You might find a couple offloading once-used wedding decor!

Setting the mood

Music! You must have music. Create a playlist in advance so on the day, you just have to hit play. Lighting is another sure-fire way to set a mood. If your soiree is a daytime outdoor bbq, you need not be concerned. However, don’t forget lighting for night events, whether it’s lowering the lights and sparking up some candles on the dinner table or creating a festive mood with something a little more disco-esque. Get my Spotify Travel Party Playlist here…

Travel themed party favors

Do you want to send guests home with a memento? What is the age range or interests of the group? Taking home a polaroid from the photo booth might be enough, or you might want to send kids home with something sugary.

travelling party ideas

Take the time to write a short note or send a quick email to thank guests for coming, especially if they brought a gift. If you are writing a physical note, think about using a postcard or a design that will echo your invitation to round out the event.

Enjoy throwing your travel themed party, and don’t forget to drop your thoughts, questions and ideas in the comments below.

Travel Themed Party Decorations

If your crowd is full of jet-setters, a travel themed party may be the perfect occasion to showcase all the trinkets, photos and memories picked up while abroad. What better way to pick your next destination than swapping stories with friends whose passports are as worn as yours? Above, you’ll find a lovely custom dessert table designed by Sweets Indeed that is sure to provide some inspiration for your own travel inspired party! Here are some tips to help you throw a travel-themed bash:

Invitations

Stir up the nostalgia with customized luggage tag invitations . Ask your guests to bring photos, souvenirs, foreign tender or some other memento from their travels for a little show-and-tell.

Vintage Suitcase Decor

Suitcases – Place vintage-esque luggage cases in various places around the party area. You can even leave some open and fill them with snacks and travel inspired props. Check out this setup featured on Style Me Pretty .

Map party decor

Maps – Visit rummage and estate sales to find old world maps. These can be framed and hung as artwork that is not only perfect for your party, but is beautiful as everyday decor as well.

Create Map Decor Ideas

Make your maps a little more interactive by rolling them into cones to hold snacks like popcorn and pretzels. Above, One Fab Day shows even more creative ways to incorporate maps into your party decor.

Globe decor

Globes – Traditional globes are a fabulous decoration item. Not only do they add a sophisticated flavor, they can also be the perfect conversation starter, allowing guests to point out where they have traveled and where they plan to adventure next. As featured on Style Me Pretty , here is a beautiful way to complement your vintage suitcase decor with a well placed globe.

Paper Airplane Garland made out of Maps

Planes – Outlines of airplanes can be printed out on colorful paper and tied together for garland. Or, if you’re feeling extra crafty, try making paper airplanes from old maps and stringing those together for pieces of garland, as seen on Run Lucas Run .

Place cards – Keep that theme chugging. If your party includes a sit-down meal, customize Place Cards  with a cute airplane or suitcase graphic, or write the menu on traveled-themed stationery.

A couple hours into the evening, have everyone sit down and share their treasures. Pass around photos and show any digital prints on phones or tablets. You could even give little prizes to the person or couple who has traveled the furthest or has the most stamps on their passport(s).

Travel themed cupcakes

If you’ve planned far enough in advance, request that your guests bring a treat from some exotic land they have visited. They could also make a homemade dish or show patronage at a shop and buy a premade item. And you could always bake some travel-themed cupcakes, as seen here from Kara’s Party Ideas .

Beverages are also a great opportunity to showcase everyone’s travels. You could feature horchata from Mexico, wine from France, sake from Japan and tea from China.

When it’s time to leave, have gift bags filled with candy from a variety of countries ready for your guests. Or get extra creative and design a favor box with a stamp to look like a well-traveled package. Enjoy your party! No luggage necessary.

a cake a other sweets and decorations for a travel-themed party

A travel-themed party is a great way to celebrate this exciting and rewarding hobby and the world’s most wonderful destinations .

Travel-themed parties can also be a great way to get people talking and make the conversation flow. People who attend travel-themed parties will want to share with others the places they have been and the places they someday hope to go.

Ideas for travel destinations and vacations can be shared, and possible travel companionships will blossom, too.

So let’s get started.

Read on to get great themed party ideas for food, decor, and more.

Start Planning for Your Travel-Themed Party

No matter what you are celebrating, a travel-themed party should be full of travel-related decorations, finger foods, sweets, savory snacks, and even costumes, or at least a travel-themed dress code for your guests, too, right?

So, where to start?

Narrowing your travel theme down is an excellent place to start planning for a travel-themed party, and here are some suggestions to get the ball rolling and your creative juices flowing.

Single Country/Regional Theme

Maybe you are farewelling a guest, or you are migrating to a new country; you could make the theme all about that country, region, or part of the world.

With a single country theme (or even region i.e. Central America , Asia), you could theme the whole party, including decorations, dress code, food according to that country (or region) and their culture, traditions, and even flag.

Feel free to be creative. You may even find inflatables with personalized designs, which can be the country’s flag, map, or name letters, and place them as a unique decor in your party.

travel photos as decor for a party

With an idea like this, you can go all out.

There are countless ways to decorate, various foods you can serve, and many engaging activities you can plan for a travel-themed party!

Decoration Set Top Choice

The easiest way to decorate your party is by getting a set that covers most of your needs!!

Method of Travel Theme

You may want your party to celebrate travel in general, and that’s a fine idea also.

Or, you may want to focus on one method of travel, such as backpacking or cruising. Or focus on some of the attractions and activities of a particular country or region like hiking, skiing , water sports, or even wildlife or a safari.

No matter your sub-theme, your travel-themed party will be memorable if it matches your interests and those of the people you invite.

If some people you invite are not as into travel as others, those passionate about traveling will pass their enthusiasm to the other guests.

After selecting a theme for your party, start getting creative for your invites. This way, you can build excitement and anticipation for your travel-themed party, so your guests can’t wait for the date!

Essential Travel Resources

❗Don’t forget travel insurance

This company is the one I trust, it’s one of the most essential things for any trip. It has your back in case you get sick abroad, or have an accident.

🎒Pack smarter, not bulky

Check out this vacation packing list , including all the essentials you need to pack when traveling, from travel clothing to backpacks and more.

🏡Where to Stay – Here are Suggestions

This is my favorite place to look for accommodations , it offers different types, a ton of locations, and good price options.

🗺️Get Around Hassle-Free

This one is the perfect option to look for different transportation options between cities, from flights, buses, and taxis to minivans and more.

🛫Find Cheap Flights

Whenever I need to fly, I head to this website for low-cost flights.

Build Excitement with Themed Invitations

You can build anticipation for your party with themed invitations based on your overall theme selected earlier.

Encourage guests to bring travel photos or souvenirs from their travels to share, or ask them to bring a dish of local cuisine from their favorite destination or something that matches your overall theme for the party.

A great idea would be to design invitations like plane or cruise tickets, baggage travel tags, or even planes or cruise ships.

Or check out these suitcase-shaped party invitations that you can order pre-made.

There are several options for effective invitations; some are easier than others. You can hand-make invitations, buy some at a store, or use free party invitations online to email your guests.

Invitations Top Choice

The most creative way to invite someone to a travel-themed party is using a suitcase!

Food and Drinks

You could include in your invite for guests to bring a dish from the region or country of your theme, or if you want your guests to be impressed, organize catering according to your theme.

Whether it’s Guatemalan or Central American cuisine , Asian or European cuisine, if you plan well and hire a professional caterer, or even if you prepare the food yourself, your party will surely be memorable.

several dishes on a metal place in a catering for a party

Regarding drinks, there are many options to suit your travel theme. You could include wine from France, sake from Japan, or one of my personal favorites, cocktails like the Michelada from Colombia .

Get Creative with Decorations

There are many great ideas for travel-themed party decorations .  If you focus on a specific region or country, you can base your decor on that.

If it’s a general travel-themed party, you can print out or buy travel posters, display food in open suitcases, use maps as placemats, and make airplane cupcake toppers on sticks.

You can use helium party balloons or make a cardboard train centerpiece out of old shoe boxes, really, the ideas are endless, and you are limited only by your imagination.

If you are throwing a party in your garden, you may consider getting an excellent garden furniture set .

travel themed party decor on top of a table with food

Play Travel-Themed Games

You can adapt many well-known party games to a travel theme. Instead of pinning the tail on the donkey, you can pin a remarkable landmark on a map.

There are games like ‘Twenty Questions’ where the correct answer must be a destination.

If you like drawing games, write travel-themed words on index cards, try to draw the word, and encourage other guests to guess.

You could also have fun by teaching and learning dances from other countries or asking travel-themed trivia questions.

Word games are a great option also for example, one player names a city or country, and the next player must name a city or country that begins with the last letter of the first guest’s choice.

Use your creativity, and maybe you can create games everyone can enjoy or use some of the best road trip games !

Wrapping it All Up

There are many different directions you can go with a travel-themed party.

In this article, we hope to have provided a really great place to start by first picking a travel-related theme and narrowing it down a bit to a specific region or country or even to a particular type of travel like backpacking or cruise vacations that can also serve as themes for the party.

From invitations to decor and food and drink, you now have an excellent place to start planning your travel-themed party so you can set a date and start sending out invites!

Maybe you will be so inspired after hosting this first party that you have more in the future.

No matter what happens, you will have a memorable party you will never forget. And you are in the best place to start planning again in the future for another party, thanks to this article.

At Home Travel Themed Party Ideas

A lot of us are spending more time at home than ever and not traveling as much as we’d like to (or is that just me?). In lieu of actual travel, I decided to throw a travel themed party for my family every couple weeks to feed our wanderlust.

We started with a Swiss picnic, a Swissnic if you will, in our backyard. Next up was Japan night. We rolled our own sushi and made miso soup. We regularly have Mexico night with tostadas, enchiladas, or burritos or Italian night with homemade ravioli or lasagna.

I asked some of my travel blogging friends for their travel party ideas and they shared some great recipes you can use.

The food is the main focus, but we’ve also added some travel party decorations and other activities to bring home the travel-at-home feeling.

Swiss travel themed party family around picnic table

The Set Up – Travel Theme Decor

No matter where you plan to travel during this travel dinner party, it’s nice to have some themed decor. We like to pull out souvenirs from our travels, if we have them.

To add to the festivities, it can be fun to make your own travel themed centerpieces, flagging, or wall art. Our son likes making flags, and put together a Swiss flag for our Swissnic.

You can also consider some general travel theme decorations like globes, airplanes, or flagging. Here are a few of our favorite travel party decorations.

  • travel themed hanging swirl decorations
  • Adventure Awaits banner
  • travel party photo booth props
  • biodegradable globe balloons

Travel Theme Party Ideas

We’ll show you how to make:

  • Swiss Raclette
  • Indian Chana Masala
  • Irish Tea Party
  • Mexican Fish Tacos
  • French Charcuterie Platter
  • Peruvian Sopa Criolla

Switzerland Themed Travel Party – Raclette Grill

red peppers and bread on a raclette grill at a swiss themed party

Raclette is an alpine cheese popular in Switzerland. In this case, it’s melted under a raclette grill while food is cooking on top. It’s a little like fondue in the sense that you are putting melted cheese and other food together, but our kids like it a lot more because there are not other ingredients mixed in the cheese like wine and spices.

We first learned about raclette from our friends at WorldTowning . Our families met up in France and they hosted a Swiss-style raclette dinner in their patio. Once of the fun things about a dinner like this is that everyone gets to participate in the grilling and since it takes awhile you get to spend some serious time relaxing and chatting.

You’ll need a raclette grill for this recipe. We bought one upon our to the U.S. after our year in Europe and love it. It’s great for dinner parties, book club dinners, and birthday parties.

You can grill whatever you want on a raclette grill; some things are more traditionally Swiss than others, but we like to make it our own.

This is the raclette grill we have – I’m sure others are good, too, but I can vouch for this one.

Ingredients

Traditional

  • Raclette cheese (Gruyère or Dubliner also work)

Non-Traditional, but yummy

  • Red peppers
  • Anything else you want to grill

Instructions

Quarter and boil the potatoes until they are cooked, but not soft.

Marinate the mushrooms. I like a shiitake salad dressing for the marinade, but it’s not very Swiss.

Slice the veggies and bread.

Lay everything on platters and place the cheese on a cutting board with a knife.

Everyone can put their cheese in the trays and food on the grill as they wish. we’ve found the cheese melts faster than the food cooks, so maybe hold off on the cheese until the food is mostly cooked.

Place veggies and bread on your plate and scrape or racler the cheese onto the other food.

Dry white wine, pickled foods (cornichons or gherkins, olives, pickled onions), cured meats (ham, salami, prosciutto), Swiss chocolate ( Toblerone or MilkBoy are easy to find)

Other Switzerland Themed Party Activities

Bellies full of cheese and wine, settle into the couch for a movie set in Switzerland:

  • Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith (Princess Leia’s home planet of Alderaan is actually the the mountains around Grindelwald)
  • James Bond: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
  • James Bond: Goldfinger
  • Tom Brown’s Angels and Demons
  • A Cure for Wellness

India Themed Travel Party – Instant Pot Chana Masala

— Preethi from Local Passport Family

indian chickpea curry for an Indian themed party

This is a common Indian curry that I ate regularly growing up. Having it in India made by my aunties felt so comforting and welcoming. I love reliving those flavors in my own home now!

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 t ground ginger
  • 4 t ground cumin
  • 4 t ground coriander
  • 2 t ground turmeric
  • 2 t garam masala
  • 2 t paprika I like to use smoked paprika
  • 1 28oz can of diced tomatoes
  • 2 c dried chickpeas
  • 3 T lemon juice

Turn  Instant Pot on sauté setting and add oil. When hot, add onions. Cook until translucent, stirring often.

Add garlic and cook for another minute until golden.

Pour in all the spices and toast for about 1 minute, stirring. Do not let burn.

Include tomatoes and dried chickpeas and stir until well coated.

Pour in water and change setting to manual high pressure. Make sure vent is sealed and set to cook for 50 minutes.

Release pressure manually when done cooking, and add lemon juice and additional salt if needed.

Eat with rice or flatbread (naan, roti, and poori are all good choices). Curry will be even better the next day (should it last that long), and also freezes well.

Other India Themed Party Activities

We love to think back on our trip to India and look at our photos. And it’s always fun video calling grandparents during the meal!

Ireland Themed Travel Party – Tea Party

— Marta from Mama Loves Ireland

Irish tea party

One of the highlights of all our family trips to Ireland are the pit stops for tea and cake! Ireland has a great tea tradition, tea being very much the most common and popular drink in the country, and most attractions have lovely tea shops with home made cakes and treats.

Maybe the most memorable of all our Irish tea experiences however was a fabulous afternoon tea we had at the Shelbourne hotel in Dublin. It was a long affair with multi-tiered trays, mini cake bites and small sandwiches in one of the most elegant hotels in Dublin: an unforgettable experience!

Making an Irish tea party at home is easy.

Ingredients and Instructions

  • The main thing you need is, of course, tea. You don’t need a fancy china set for this however, we find that having nice cups out makes the whole experience more fun. The most common varieties of tea in Ireland are called Barry’s and Lyons , they are black teas, and they are always served with milk and, if you like it, sugar.
  • For treats, our favorites are brownies, Irish scones, Irish apple cake, and banana bread. The Irish apple cake in particular is delicious with tea: it is a sponge type of cake or a ‘bread’ as they say and scones are also lovely. Irish ones are usually made with a lot of lovely Irish butter and serve with cream and jam.

Other Ireland Themed Party Activities

For the Irish feel to be complete, we like to put Irish music in the background (RTE kids radio is Irish and free online) and sometimes we even make Ireland inspired crafts to decorate the table. Flags and shamrocks are easy to make with paper and crayons and add to the atmosphere!

Mexico Themed Travel Party – Fish Tacos

— Katja from Globetotting

Mexican themed travel party

We lived in Mexico City for nearly six years and tacos quickly became part of our staple diet. Of the many types of tacos that we ate regularly, none could quite compare to fish tacos from our local taqueria, Tres Galeones .

Since moving back to the UK two years ago, we have been attempting to recreate an authentic Mexican taco – with some success!

  • 4 skinless fillets of firm white fish. We use cod.
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 garlic glove, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 soft corm tortillas

Cut the fish fillets in half lengthways (so that they look like long fingers) and place in a roasting tin. Mix together the spices and sprinkle over the fish. Mix the garlic and olive oil and a bowl and drizzle over the fish. Road in the oven for approximately 10 minutes.

The tacos are best served with pickled onion (cut a red onion into thin slices and coat in lime juice), avocado, fresh coriander and chipotle mayonnaise.

Other MexicoThemed Party Activities

Since lockdown, we’ve taken to having virtual Friday night travels. Our first trip took us back to Mexico where we ate fish tacos and dressed up!

France Themed Travel Party – French Charcuterie Platter

— Chelsea from Pack More Into Life

french themed travel party

Good food is at the heart of all French people. The French markets are full of delectable delights with fresh cheeses, delectable fruits and meats. Bakeries offer a plethora of breads to delight any palate.

The variety can suit your taste.

Start with at least two cured meats. Dry cured sausage and salami are favorites. Then add 3-4 varieties of cheese: a hard cheese, a soft cheese, a blue cheese and perhaps an aged cheese. Add a fresh baguette (warmed in the oven), picked vegetables, olives, fresh jam, nuts and ground mustard.

Other France Themed Party Activities

To continue the French theme, watch the Disney movie Ratatouille , create your own stained glass Notre Dame windows, make lavender soap, and go on a bike ride for your very own Tour de France. Find tutorials for these activities and more travel themed activities for kids here.

Peru Themed Travel Party – Sopa Criolla

— Ariana from World of Travel With Kids

peru themed travel party

In Peru most local restaurants offer a cheaper fixed Menu of the Day consisting of a soup, main course, and then dessert. So you get to try many different typical meals by ordering the Menu of the Day , which I am sure is how I first tried Sopa Criolla / Sopa a la Minuta for the first time.

Translated it means beef noodle soup which explains why it is suitable for the kids – in fact they love it! Many other Peruvian soups feature big chunks of grisly (!) meat or chicken and are on the chewy side with big beans and lots of potato.

Sopa Criolla has ground beef making it delicious for the kids – and something that is easy and delicious to make when at home.

As I lived in Peru for over 10 years, this is a recipe that I can make from memory. The key ingredient is Aji Panca – which you can’t buy in Australia.

  • freeze dried chili flakes from the supermarket in moderation in lieu of aji panca , works well (though doesn’t taste exactly the same). Or purchase on Amazon .
  • minced beef
  • 2 Tbl tomato paste
  • 4 C beef stock
  • angel hair pasta
  • 1 egg/person

Fry onion, garlic, aji panca or chili peppers, and oregano until soft. Then add minced beef and about 2 tablespoons of tomato paste.

Once cooked, add beef stock and then angel hair pasta, which cooks really quickly.

Technically you are supposed to poach your eggs before putting them into the soup and serving… but I just break the egg into the soup and let it cook that way. It is such an easy dish that the kids can help make it as its quick and easy.

Other Peru Themed Party Activities

If you are looking for a movie the Emperor’s New Groove is set in Peru with the lead character named Cusco! While not technically correct, the kids really enjoyed it.

You can also read Peru books for kids .

Note about the picture: My mother and I, along with my two kids are eating a Peruvian delicacy – guinea pig (cuy) plus a big plate of noodles (tallarin). Needless to say, we have never eaten guinea pig at home!

Acoustic Guitarist

An acoustic guitarist can pull influences from different corners of the world for a diverse setlist. If you have a specific style in mind, communicate that with the muscician ahead of time so they have plenty of time to prepare. Or go the route of ambient background tunes that complement any setting.

Green Screen Rental

With a green screen, the world is yours. Rent a green screen photo backdrop that allows guests to go from the Great Wall of China to the Great Barrier Reef in seconds. Not only does this make a for a fun ice breaker, but it doubles as a party favor.

You don’t have to be well-travelled to appreciate a foreign cuisine. Give guests a few tasting options from one region, or an around-the-globe presentation: Chinese potstickers, Italian caprese salad, Venezuelan empanadas, Indian samosas, and Swedish meatballs. Your tastebuds will go on an adventure with you.

How to Throw a Soaringly Awesome Airplane Party

Airplane party ideas for an amazing vintage travel party.

If you have a little one or a mama-to-be who loves to travel, then plan an adorable vintage airplane party.   Soar off into the horizon with this cute Vintage Airplane Party styled by Bridget Parry.

This Airplane Party mixes rustic charm and creative ideas into one fantastic trip. Pardon the pun:)

travelling party ideas

I love to fly.  Big commercial planes, small 2 person jets…I love the sensation of being up in the air.  I love soaring through the clouds.

If it wasn’t for the hassle of airport security when you have two small children and lots of luggage, flying might be my favorite thing ever:)

Perhaps I should have been a flight attendant.  I KNOW I could never have been a pilot….I couldn’t handle the pressure of having all those people’s lives in my hands.  I don’t even like to drive carpool!!

Oh well….I’ll stick to being a passenger.

Or maybe just throwing a super cute airplane party or two and sharing airplane party ideas!

This cute airplane party was styled by Bridget from Bridgey Widgey using our Vintage Airplane Party Printables.  I love the details.  This party was for a training at her church.  Super clever, huh?!?

The ladies could pick up their training gear at baggage claim.  This would also be a great way to display/give out your party favors. Just saying…

What a fun article, Sarah. My favourite is the Snow Globe costume but I am not sure if I would personally dress up in it. I might try it on my niece though.

When looking at these photos, I can't stop laughing. This post is fun. Will look back at this post in February, when Carnaval is coming up in the Netherlands! Then it will definitely be useful. Thanks for sharing!

Although I haven't dressed up in years, I do enjoy looking at photos of everyone's costumes! These are all so great! If I was going to dress up this year I would dress up as the new female Dr. Who. She's a world traveler, wouldn't you say?!?!? :)

THESE ADORABLE TRAVEL PARTY DECORATIONS ARE EASY AND SIMPLE!

A travel party theme can work for so many different occasions.

And we’ve got some adorable travel theme decoration ideas to share with you.

Whether you’re planning a graduation party, wedding shower, bachelorette parties, or in this case, a ladies’ golf outing, a travel party can be a lot of fun!

In fact, what’s the first thing we determine when Matt and I start planning an event either professionally or at home?

A great theme not only makes any event more fun and interesting for your guests, it also provides a fantastic roadmap for your décor.

Following simple travel theme party decor ideas will make pulling your tablescape together a breeze!

travel theme party ideas, Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards, suitcase centerpieces, and a floral arrangement with Fuji mums and hydrangeas, they are perfect with blush table linens, great travel party decorations

I recently curated these vintage travel party decorations for a ladies luncheon.

The mood they created was bright, cheerful and elegant … perfect for a great afternoon with friends.

Here’s how I chose each of the elements of my travel theme party decor, step by step:

THE WORLD AWAITS!

These three words are perfect to introduce the travel theme to your guests.

It’s fun and it’s subtle … you don’t want to beat people over the head with the theme.

I found these adorable cocktail napkins that were a perfect starting point.

They offered a delightful color palette from which to build the other elements of the décor.

Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards and suitcase favor holders especially when paired with these adorable The World Awaits napkins and blush and ivory table linens.

Muted pastel shades are so on trend right now. The cocktail napkins were simply ideal for this theme.

The khaki, teal, and yellow in the napkin works perfectly with the champagne and blush cloth table linens.

These colors have been on the runways for several seasons, so it’s only logical they are now frequently making appearances on the “best-dressed” tabletops as well!

Remember, fashion always leads!

PACK YOUR BAGS …

You can’t have a travel theme without a suitcase, right?

While these centerpieces took a little effort, they certainly made a big impact on the table.

And really, they weren’t that difficult to pull together.

I started with the suitcases , of course, which come in a variety of colors.

For this celebration, I thought the gold really went best with the color palate and sophisticated mood I was trying to achieve.

Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards, suitcase centerpieces, and a floral arrangement with Fuji mums and hydrangeas, they are perfect with blush table linens. Travel party decorations, travel theme ideas.

Fuji mums paired with ivory hydrangeas were a perfect flowers to fill these centerpieces.

Hydrangeas are my favorite workhorse for a wide variety of reasons. I turn to them time and time again.

Why do I love them? First, their blooms are large so you don’t need a ton of them to make a nice, full arrangement. That also means you can make your floral dollars go further.

Second, they hold up for a really long time.

You don’t have to worry about them wilting, especially if you care for them properly. Since they are big blooms, they need lots of water.

Finally, hydrangeas are forgiving. If you do screw up and they begin to wilt, you can rescue them with this easy trick .

EVERYONE NEEDS A SOUVENIR, RIGHT?

Great travel theme party ideas include these suitcase favor boxes. Travel party decorations, bachelorette party ideas, wedding shower ideas, vintage travel decor

In addition to the centerpieces, I found these adorable suitcase favor boxes.

While we have begun to emerge from COVID and are more comfortable gathering together, a few things have permanently changed when it comes to events.

One of these is party favors.

Loose, unwrapped candies in bags or boxes are definitely a thing of the past.

Think about the assembly … yuck.

These suitcase gift boxes, which contained wrapped Hershey’s kisses , were an ideal option.

PICK YOUR DESTINATION …

One of the easiest (and in this case cutest) ways to incorporate your theme is by simply dressing up your food.

These travel theme picks were the perfect choice for our desserts.

Travel themed picks including a map, plane and suitcase inserted into chocolate cupcakes are a great and simple idea to incorporate a travel theme.

DON’T GO OVERBOARD.

The simple, monochromatic color palette of the table linens is by design.

There are a lot of things to look at on this tablescape.

If there were too many colors, it would be overwhelming.

I limited my linen color palette choices to blush and beige.

The napkins and the tablecloths were the same color, as were the satin accent cloths.

A travel theme is perfect for a bridal shower, bachelorette party or graduation party. A great theme not only makes any event more fun and interesting for your guests, it also provides a fantastic roadmap for your décor. A suitcase centerpiece is a simple travel theme party decor idea that will make pulling your tablescape together a breeze! We added travel themed scrapbook paper to create more interest. It looks great with these blush table linens.

IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO TRAVEL IN LAYERS …

If I had a dime for every time my mother said that to me!

Not only is this great advice for travel attire, it’s also one of my favorite rules when creating a gorgeous tablescape.

By layering décor and linens, you create excitement and interest on your tabletop.

Since this event was held at a country club, the tables were rather large and measured 72 inches in diameter.

Layering various décor items helped to create some cozy warmth.

In addition, it allowed guests to have something interesting to look at wherever they were seated at the table.

A few of the layering items on this table include:

ADDITIONAL LINENS

Instead of just plopping the centerpiece down on the table and calling it a day, consider softening the look.

One of my favorite tricks is to use a chair sash (yup, those fabric pieces that are typically around chairs at wedding receptions) to create a “nest” on which to place a centerpiece.

This trick also works to hide or conceal the ugly bottoms of candelabras.

Chair sashes are the ideal size and shape for this task! And they are usual cheap to rent!

In addition, extra square napkins were perfect to place inside the suitcase to dress up the flower arrangement.

Both of these additional linen options are really cost effective!

VINTAGE TRAVEL POSTCARDS

By scattering these around the centerpiece I was able to include various destinations from around the world in a cute fashion that stayed within the color palate and added to the theme.

We added vintage travel postcards and yellow and coral tissue poufs to create more interest. It looks great with these blush table linens.

TISSUE POM POMS

I had one worry on this table.

I didn’t want someone to have to stare at the back of the suitcase centerpiece.

Tissue pom poms were the solution. In addition, they added height, texture and color to each of the tables. Perfection!

BASIC WHITE PICTURE FRAMES

I cannot tell you how many times I turn to these simple white picture frames .

Years ago, I picked up several dozen at IKEA and have subsequently used them countless times to hold table numbers, menus, drink recipes and even, well, photos!

Here are some similar frames that would be great for all of the uses I’ve just name. They are easy to store and definitely worth the investment.

SCRAPBOOK PAPER

As I was pulling together this table, I liked it, but thought it needed just a bit more interest.

I found some adorable travel themed scrapbook paper and knew it was just the right touch.

There are lots of super cute, really fun papers out there and they are affordable enough to use just once without any guilt.

They make perfect placemats or in this case, added just the right amount of punch to the center of the table.

Hosting a travel party

If you’re interested in throwing a travel party, consider these few tips to make it a fun time for all:

1. Invite people who want to talk travel.  Usually travelers love talking about their upcoming trips or their past experiences.  Make sure to invite people who want to share ideas and want to learn from one another. 2.  Provide “trip-centric”food.   Heidi asked each of us which country we wanted to attend and she looked up a specialty snack from each country.  She printed out tags with the country’s flag and wrote down what the dish was.  This was a fun way to enjoy one another’s trips and opened up discussions about food and travel. 3.  Make sure there is some sort of presentation, movie or travelogue to watch.  It’s important not just to have guests share about their trips, but that your guests walk away more informed about traveling than they were when they first showed up.  Either invite each person so share some tips or funny travel stories where they learned something or play a traveling show/movie.  You could ask a friend whose great at packing to get a demonstration on how they pack light and things they do/don’t pack.  There are always new things to learn, either from one another or an expert. 4.  Show and tell.   It’s fun to show off some of the new travel gadgets that are available.  Maybe that’s a new camera, packing cubes, camping gear, moisture-wicking clothing, etc.  Have each guest bring their favorite new travel-related gear purchase, or even consider putting together a slide show of new items to show guests.   5.  Bring the pictures.   Another way to engage is to have your guests bring some photographs from their last trip to share with others.  This can be a great ice-breaker for guests who may not know each other, or even just something to put on the coffee table and browse at their leisure. 6.  Of course, have travel-themed decor.   Nothing sets the mood for travel more than maps, globes and suitcases.  Have fun with decorating the house with travel-themed items, and play music that inspires you to get out your passport and catch a flight. Have you ever hosted a travel party?  Would you be excited if you were invited to one?

At a Russian Palace, a Storybook Beginning

Ten years after meeting at a party at Harvard, Svetlana Dotsenko and Fabián Poliak reconnected while both were traveling in Europe.

A bride and groom hold hands outside and smile. She is wearing a white wedding dress with embellished sleeves and a veil. He is wearing a cream tuxedo jacket, black pants and a black bow tie. A dog rests between them.

By Valeriya Safronova

In August 2018, Svetlana Dotsenko and Fabián Alejandro Poliak were visiting the Peterhof palace complex in St. Petersburg, Russia, when Mr. Poliak decided to make a move.

“I’m not leaving these grounds without trying for a kiss,” Mr. Poliak recalled thinking to himself.

A short while later, they were running through the palace gardens in a torrential downpour to catch the last ferry of the day back to the city center. “On the final bridge, I pulled her back,” Mr. Poliak said. “It was very beautiful.”

Ms. Dotsenko, 36, and Mr. Poliak, 35, first met at a party at Harvard in 2008. She was a sophomore from Voronezh, Russia, studying government, and he was a freshman from Buenos Aires studying sociology. Their interaction at the party was brief. Afterward, Ms. Dotsenko messaged Mr. Poliak on Facebook to ask if he would teach her Spanish. Mr. Poliak, “clueless” that the invitation was about more than learning a new language, wondered why she wouldn’t just take a class.

“He didn’t follow up, so we both completely moved on,” Ms. Dotsenko said.

Ten years later, Ms. Dotsenko was on the Greek island of Crete for a summer program that she runs annually as part of her business, Project Lever, which helps international students apply to top colleges in the United States and match with professors for research projects. She posted on Facebook that she was looking for a last-minute tutor for the students.

Mr. Poliak had just received an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and was traveling around Europe for four months before joining Tesla, where he still works now, as a program manager.

Mr. Poliak answered Ms. Dotsenko’s post, and she hired him immediately. “The program was very intense,” Ms. Dotsenko said. “It was no place for romance.”

Still, she was intrigued by his personality. So before their week together ended, she invited him to join her on a trip to Russia. He agreed.

It was there that their romance began — with the kiss at the palace. They went to Moscow, too, as well as Vladimir, a nearby city, where they visited a bench that promised those who sat on it “eternal love.”

“At the end of that marvelous week together in Russia, I told her I want to see where this goes,” Mr. Poliak said. He was about to start a new job in San Francisco, and Ms. Dotsenko was a digital nomad, never staying in one place for more than a few weeks.

“I asked, ‘Are you down to keep seeing each other once a month?” Ms. Dotsenko said. He was.

For the next year and a half, they dated long-distance, meeting in different countries, like Switzerland, Mexico and Peru. “It was an adventure all over the world,” Ms. Dotsenko said.

“Even with all the logistics, it felt like the easiest relationship I ever had,” Mr. Poliak said. “It was a huge, huge signal.”

When the pandemic started, their distance apart shortened: Mr. Poliak moved to Amsterdam, and Ms. Dotsenko settled in Berlin. (He joined her there in September 2023.) On Aug. 11, 2022, during a surprise trip to Mierzęcin Palace Wellness & Wine Resort in Mierzęcin, Poland, to watch the Perseid meteor shower , Mr. Poliak proposed on a bridge in the resort’s garden.

On Aug. 30, 2023, Ms. Dotsenko took Mr. Poliak to the Magere Brug, or “Skinny Bridge,” in Amsterdam during the blue supermoon . She bent down on one knee, took out a meteorite ring and asked him to marry her. “We try to make our relationship equal on all grounds, so I thought it’s important to have a reciprocal ask,” Ms. Dotsenko said.

[Click here to binge read this week’s featured couples.]

The two were married March 26 by Paula Tambussi, a public official at the Registro Civil Central in Buenos Aires, the same building where Mr. Poliak’s parents were wed in 1981.

A few days later, on March 30, the couple celebrated with 140 guests at Chacra Taló, an events space outside Buenos Aires. The event mixed traditions from their cultures: They stepped on glass to honor Mr. Poliak’s Jewish heritage, and from Ms. Dotsenko’s mother, they received an Russian Orthodox icon from Vladimir, the city they visited in Russia in 2018. 13. Seek shade

For those times when the sun is just that bit too hot, or when you realize you've been sitting out for too long, some form of shade is a must. From makeshift awnings to generous parasols, there are many ways to welcome shade to your outdoor living space.

Look for a solution large enough to encompass multiple guests. If freestanding, choose lightweight so it can be easily moved around the garden but ensure it's durable enough to withstand any wind. "A parasol will not only add some extra shade to an outdoor space, but can also quickly refresh the overall look of your garden" says the style team at Wayfair.
