There are plenty of reasons to get a Tumi bag , from the amazing materials to the unique tracing system that guarantees you will never lose your bag. But if you’re already here, then you probably don’t need any convincing.

So, let’s take a look at the best luggage from Tumi’s Alpha 3 collection, and hopefully, you will find what you’re looking for!

This luggage is equipped with a lot of unique features, which can really make a frequent traveler’s life easier. So, let’s get down to the details of everything you need to know about the Tumi Alpha 3 luggage.

Size Variety And Their Differences

This luggage collection includes several different sizes of suitcases, from a 22” carry-on to a 34” checked bag. All of the suitcases are made from the same materials, and they are all covered by the same warranty. Which isn’t really that good, but I’ll tell you about it later.

However, not all suitcases have the exact same features. The International carry-on is the one with the most unique features, so let’s talk about that for a second.

The  smallest Alpha 3 suitcase  comes equipped with a  USB port  and a power bank compartment so that you can charge your phone while you’re running around the airport. It’s a pretty convenient feature to have, and I think it’s the only major difference between the Alpha 3 suitcases.

Suitcase Materials And Durability

The Alpha 3 bags are all made from  FXT Ballistic nylon . It is a very durable material, which does not get ripped easily. And these bags feature DuraFold construction, which includes molded side panels and protective bumper rails, for improved impact resistance.

And honestly, the Alpha 3 luggage has really  great impact resistance . I don’t usually recommend softshell suitcases as large checked bags, because most of them aren’t strong enough to survive being tossed around by baggage handlers.

A lot of them wind up deformed or flat-out destroyed on the luggage carousel, which is something you never want to deal with on your trip.

Well, if there’s one softside suitcase that is designed to survive the tough love of baggage handlers, it is the Alpha 3 bag by Tumi. Everything about it is tough and durable, and I honestly believe that these bags could easily outlive even ABS hardsides.

The other materials of the luggage are really sturdy as well. The wheel handle is made from  lightweight aluminum,  which has excellent durability.

And even the zippers are top of the line; they are designed to break away from the suitcase if they get caught on something, so that you only have to replace one part of the zipper mechanism, as opposed to the entire thing.

Double Spinner Wheels

Tumi’s Alpha 3 luggage is equipped with  smooth-rolling double spinner wheels . These bags are really easy to maneuver, especially on smooth airport floors. The wheels are really sturdy, and they will not fall off easily.

You could damage them if you wheeled the bag on rocky or uneven terrain, so avoid doing that if you don’t want to contact customer support during your first year with an Alpha 3 bag. And the wheels are really  quiet , which is always a bonus.

It’s also worth noting that Tumi has a  carry-on option  with two in-line skate wheels, as opposed to four spinner wheels. The main difference between that carry-on and the spinner is the price point; the upright bag is some $100 cheaper.

Most of the other features are the same, from the expandable capacity to the USB port. But I would recommend sticking with the spinner – at these prices, $100 doesn’t make a huge difference, and a spinner is so much more convenient to travel with.

The Alpha 3 suitcases all feature a telescopic wheel handle. It is a  multi-stage handle , which means that you can lock it into different height positions – three, to be exact. This makes it easy for people of different heights to get the perfect fit for themselves, and it makes the luggage just a bit more customizable.

Additionally, the top part of the handle is  ergonomic , so it feels really comfortable in your hand. It is actually made from aircraft-grade aluminum, so it is a really tough and durable wheel handle. However, the barrels do protrude into the packing compartment a little, so you will need to pack around them.

Top, Bottom & Side Grab Handles

This Tumi luggage features top, side, and bottom grab handles, so it’s really easy to pick up the suitcases with two hands. Obviously, it will be easier to pick up the smaller bags, but the thing I’m excited about is that there’s a handle at the bottom that you can hold on to.

This feature is particularly useful on the carry-on since it’s the bag you’re most likely to actually pick up and place somewhere high up, like in the overhead compartment. The bottom handle is also the only one that is purely fabric; the other two are made from plastic, and they are  ergonomically shaped  to feel comfortable in your hands.

Double Packing Compartments

The great thing about the Alpha 3 luggage is that all suitcases have  two packing compartments . And it is exciting to see this on the Tumi luggage because double packing compartments is something we’re used to seeing on hardsides and not softsides.

This makes it super easy to stay organized while traveling, especially with so many different pockets  both inside and on the suitcase. Both compartments are fully lined, with zippered and floating dividers, as well as some padding on the sides which will protect the more fragile items.

Additionally, the capacity of the luggage is  expandable , and this is true for all the Alpa 3 suitcases. You get two extra inches of packing space, which is perfect for those times when you packed just a little too much in your suitcase. Especially for people who, like me, can’t stop themselves from shopping too much whenever they go away.

Another thing worth noting is that these bags come with a  removable garment sleeve . It can fit one suit, which makes the bags a great option for business trips. And when you want to use the luggage for pleasure, you can take out the sleeve to have even more space inside the packing compartments.

External Packing Compartments

The thing I love the most about softside luggage is that it always has external compartments. They’re great for people who want to keep certain items separate, but also just for having things easily accessible.

The Alpha 3 bags have  three external compartments . The largest external compartment has zippered pockets inside, and it can be locked. It is large enough to hold a laptop, and you could store your tech in it if you get the carry-on. I don’t recommend putting your laptop in there if you plan to check the suitcase – the bag needs to land awkwardly just once, and you’ll end up having to buy a new laptop.

There are also  two zippered pockets on the front panel of the bag. The top one is pretty small, and it is great for stuff you want to have handy while you’re at the airport, like your passport and boarding pass. The lower one is much roomier, and it can fit bigger items, like a magazine, files, or a book.

TSA Friendly Lock

This luggage is equipped with  TSA-friendly lock . It’s a basic three-digit combination lock, and you can set up the combination that you would like to use. But there is something unique about the lock on this luggage – it doesn’t just lock the main compartment, but also the front laptop compartment.

The lock is able to secure  two sets of zippers , which is something you won’t see on many other suitcases. This is particularly great because the large front pocket is designed as a laptop compartment, so it is pretty important to keep it secure.

A TSA-friendly lock is especially important for people who often travel to the United States. TSA agents might choose your suitcase randomly for inspection, and they can open up these locks without damaging your bag. Any different type of lock, and they have the right to rip it off and pretty much just destroy your luggage.

However, it is important to know that no zippered luggage is 100% from smugglers and thieves. Bypassing a lock is as simple as inserting a ballpoint pen between the zipper teeth – if you’re traveling with some extremely valuable items, you might want to consider going with  a zipperless suitcase  instead.

Tumi has a  great tracing system,  which pretty much guarantees you will always be reunited with your bag if you lose it at the airport. Every bag has a unique serial number, which the company can trace back to you. But you have to register it first – so, as soon as you get your suitcase, go on their website and register the bag to your name.

That way, if your luggage ever winds up on a flight that’s different from yours, airline personnel can contact Tumi, which can then find the owner of the bag in their register. That’s pretty great, not just because it would suck to lose the contents of your bag, but also because we’re talking about luggage that isn’t at all cheap!

Everything about Tumi bags is pretty great, except for the price tag. These are r eally expensive suitcases, and it’s pretty hard to stomach the price points. Wondering whether or not they are actually worth so much money is entirely fair, especially considering just how pricier they are than other  respectable luggage brands.

The honest answer is that the luggage is usually not worth so much money. A big part of that price tag is the brand on the bag, and that’s the hard truth. Don’t get me wrong – Tumi bags truly are  high quality,  with excellent and convenient features. But there’s nothing groundbreaking about them, and I’ve yet to see a feature that would justify three zeroes on the price tag.

Of course, the people for who this luggage is mostly made don’t really care about the price point. They care about what it means to drag around a Tumi suitcase, even if it’s no better than the ten times cheaper Samsonite. And if you just want to flaunt a little or let the world know how well you’re doing, carrying around a Tumi bag is a pretty universal sign among frequent travelers.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for some seriously durable luggage, I encourage you to check out  Rimowa suitcases . They are in a similar price range as the Tumi bags, but they are much sturdier options – most of the luggage is zipperless and made from aluminum, and the cases themselves are pretty much indestructible.

One reason why it’s so hard to stomach the price of the Tumi bags is the  poor customer service  and disappointing warranty. The Alpha 3 bags come with a 5-year warranty, which is not that much.  Osprey backpacks,  which are about 10 times cheaper than these bags, come with a lifetime warranty. So do many other bags from various different luggage brands, which cost only a fraction of the price of an Alpha 3 suitcase.

It is a  decent warranty,  but it is not unlimited like you get from Briggs & Riley. In addition to that, it can take weeks for them to repair a broken piece of luggage, and you don’t get a loaner in the meantime. All in all, if your Tumi suitcase gets broken, it’s going to be at least a month until you see it again.

The upside is that, if they are unable to fix your bag, they will let you pick out a brand new one that’s in the same price range. But only if your luggage is still under warranty; if it’s not, then you’re pretty much doomed.

Tumi Alpha 3 Luggage Review: Final Thoughts

Tumi’s Alpha 3 luggage features some of the  best softside suitcases  you can get your hands on. They are made from premium materials and are reinforced for superb durability. The bags all have TSA locks, two packing compartments, smooth spinner wheels, a multi-stage wheel handle, and an abundance of pockets for easy organization.

The carry-on luggage even features a handy USB port, for charging your phone on the go. All in all, these are premium suitcases that you will enjoy using if you wind up getting them.

But you have to pay quite a lot of money for them. And if you just can’t stomach the price of these bags, then I encourage you to look at some more affordable options. You can get a premium Samsonite suitcase for a fraction of an Alpha 3 bag’s price, and it will perform just as well.

In this Tumi Alpha 3 22-inch carry-on review, we’ll look at everything this bag offers, like its durability, value, and much more. We’ll also find out how it ranks up against other Tumi suitcases and some similarly-priced ones from other brands.

The Tumi Alpha 3 22-inch carry-on offers excellent durability, with its FXT ballistic nylon case being one of the most durable ones on the market. Its wheels roll very smoothly, and it’s packed with many features. However, the suitcase costs way too much compared to what it’s offering, and Tumi’s warranty could see a lot of improvement.

Don’t get us wrong – the Alpha 3 is an excellent suitcase- in fact, it’s one of the most durable carry-ons out there . However, for half the price, you can get a similarly durable suitcase from Briggs & Riley that offers more features and comes with better warranty terms, specifically, the Briggs & Riley Baseline carry-on.

Full Review

Dimensions & weight (6/10).

The Alpha 3 carry-on measures at 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35.5 x 23 cm) . It’s great to see that the suitcase’s size matches its advertised size. Most commonly, brands advertise the size of the case without its wheels and handles. This also means that Tumi’s carry-on matches the most common carry-on size restriction. We couldn’t find any complaints about customers checking the Alpha 3, so it’s safe to say that you won’t have an issue using it as a carry-on.

The internal packing space of the bag is also great at first glance. However, a few customers complained that the older models of the Alpha 3 carry-on used to have more space inside. While the older model was an extra two inches wide, the newer one is expandable, which adds two inches to its depth, so this should suffice for a week-long trip .

The Alpha 3 weighs 10.9 lbs (4.94 kg) , which is quite heavy for a ballistic nylon carry-on. Our research showed that the average weight of these bags is 8.48lbs (3.85kg), which is more than 20% less than the weight of the Alpha 3 carry-on.

Materials & Water-Resistance (13/15)

The Tumi Alpha 3 carry-on is made from the patented FXT ballistic nylon . Ballistic nylon is considered the best fabric on the market, but it’s also the heaviest. Regular nylon suitcases are a little less durable than ballistic nylon ones, while they’re a lot lighter. Going back to Tumi, its FXT ballistic nylon is said to be an improved version of regular ballistic nylon, which adds to its toughness and makes the suitcase abrasion-proof.

We couldn’t find any mention of a water-resistant coating on this suitcase, so it’s safe to assume that there is none. Our experience has taught us that ballistic nylon is water-repellant, meaning that it won’t get soaked in light rain. Though, we’re sure that your belongings will get wet if you drag the bag through heavy rain.

Durability (20/20)

Every Tumi suitcase is built with durability in mind, and the Alpha 3 22-inch carry-on is no different. We didn’t find any complaints concerning the durability of any aspects of the suitcase.

The case is extremely durable because it is made from FXT ballistic nylon. The patent uses a unique weave, making the suitcase resistant to any abrasions during your travel. It also features their DuraFold construction, which covers parts of the front, back, and corners of it, thus making it resistant to any impact that could destroy it.

The wheels, zippers, and handles are the parts that usually break first on a suitcase. This isn’t true with the Tumi Alpha 3; we didn’t find any complaints about any broken wheels or flimsy handles. The zippers are made so that only the zipper puller will detach from the bag if they get stuck somewhere, making it easier to replace them.

We think that in terms of durability, the Alpha 3 carry-on is one of the best softside ones on the market.

Moveability (15/15)

The Tumi Alpha 3 carry-on comes with four double spinner wheels . They’re made from rubber, which ensures that they won’t only roll smoothly but also be silent. This is confirmed by most customers, who were amazed at how easy this suitcase is to roll.

Considering that this bag is targeted toward business travelers, the spinner wheels are the best choice since they are the easiest ones to roll around the airport without needing to tilt them. That said, rollaboards are much better when traveling off the beaten path or trying to fit as many clothes as possible inside the suitcase. However, realistically, you’ll roll your suitcase on smooth surfaces ( like airports and pavements ) if you’re traveling for business, which is where spinner wheels excel.

The Alpha 3 also comes with many handles, including a retractable top handle, which will make rolling the bag around effortless. There are a couple of handles on the sides of the carry-on as well, which should assist you in picking it up. Thankfully, there’s a bottom handle as well; this should significantly help you lift the bag up to the overhead bins, considering that it is heavier than most other carry-ons.

Additional Features (10/10)

The Tumi Alpha 3 carry-on comes with a lot of additional features. At its price point, these are all to be expected since most other similarly-priced suitcases have them.

For starters, the bag has a TSA-approved lock . Every premium suitcase should have one because the TSA can ( and will ) destroy your bag’s zippers to check your belongings if the lock isn’t present. The unique thing about the Alpha 3’s lock is that it has space for two zippers, so you can lock the main compartment and front pocket, which is a great addition.

The main feature that every Tumi suitcase has is the Tumi Tracer . It’s a simple tag on the back of the bag, with a barcode and a 20-digit product number. If you’ve registered your suitcase, then Tumi will be able to track it down in case you lose it in transit.

The carry-on also comes with a USB port , which you could utilize to charge your phone on the move. You’ll need to get your own power bank, though, since the bag doesn’t come with one.

As we take a deeper look inside, the Alpha 3 has a lot of pockets; so you can divide your belongings according to their type. The front pocket can hold a 14-inch laptop, which is especially great for business travelers. The main compartment has two mesh pockets and two pencil-case pockets, alongside a pair of unique compression straps. Along with all that, there’s a built-in suiter compartment so that you can pack an extra suit with you.

Design (6/10)

The Alpha 3’s design isn’t the best one out there. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s very elegant, and it’ll fit business travelers nicely. It would be nice if Tumi had a couple of extra color options for it, apart from the black one, though.

That said, compared to other luxury suitcases, the Alpha 3 carry-on looks the most professional and sleek while not being too dull. Once compared to other Tumi bags, the Alpha 3 is one of our favorites, but it’s not the best-looking one.

Still, Tumi managed to create a functional and beautiful suitcase at the same time, so well done to them.

Warranty (8/10)

The Tumi Alpha 3 is covered by Tumi’s 5-year warranty. Although Tumi is owned by Samsonite, it doesn’t feature the same warranty terms – it has slightly better ones.

The first year of the warranty covers any manufacturing defects and damage that was caused during airline handling. It also covers all shipping costs to and from Tumi’s repair centers. However, it doesn’t cover any damage that they consider was due to “abuse” from the owner. For the next four years, the bag is covered by a limited warranty covering manufacturing defects or normal wear and tear.

The issue with the warranty is that you need to have the receipt as proof of purchase to make a warranty claim. Thankfully, after the 5-year period passes, the brand will offer repairs at a discount.

At this price point, you’d expect a much better warranty. For example, the suitcases from Briggs & Riley, which cost 40% less , come with an unlimited lifetime warranty. With Tumi, you get an unlimited warranty for just one year, and after that, it’s essentially a very limited one, covering only manufacturing defects.

Value (2/10)

Even though we’ve praised the Alpha 3 carry-on so far, there’s no doubt that it’s overpriced. Tumi’s luggage is generally known for being extremely overpriced just because they have the Tumi logo on them.

There’s no denying that the Alpha 3 22-inch carry-on is a great suitcase. It has many features that you won’t find on most softside carry-ons on the market, and it’s designed for business travelers. However, brands like Briggs & Riley and Travelpro offer similar suitcases at much cheaper prices, which have similar durability and better warranty terms.

So, while there’s no issue with the Alpha 3 carry-on, and its customers love it, it’s very overpriced .

How Does the Alpha 3 Compare to Similar Suitcases?

We found two suitcases from Tumi that are very similar to the Alpha 3. These are the Tumi Merge carry-on and the Tumi Voyageur Leger carry-on .

The Voyageur Leger is the cheapest one out of the three bags, but it’s made from regular nylon instead of ballistic nylon. This also explains why it’s lighter than the other two Tumi carry-ons. However, it’s definitely the best-looking suitcase that Tumi has to offer, and it has the most internal capacity of all three suitcases.

The Merge carry-on is very similar to the Alpha 3. Both bags are made from ballistic nylon, despite the Merge being a bit lighter. It also comes with an extra two handles on the front of the bag to make it easier to pick it up.

We also compared the Alpha 3 to two suitcases from Briggs & Riley, the Briggs & Riley Baseline and the Briggs & Riley Rhapsody . The main positive with both suitcases is that they’re backed by Briggs & Riley’s warranty, which replaces the bag no matter what happens to it.

The Baseline carry-on is more similar to the Alpha 3 than the Rhapsody. That’s because both bags are made from ballistic nylon, while the Rhapsody carry-on is made from regular nylon. While that does make it much more lightweight than the other two, it’s not as durable. The Baseline basically has every feature that the Alpha 3 suitcase has, apart from the tracer.

On top of that, the Baseline is much cheaper than the Alpha 3, and the Rhapsody is half the latter’s price. So, it’s clear that some equally-great suitcases cost much less than the Alpha 3.

Our Verdict

The Tumi Alpha 3 22-inch carry-on is a very durable suitcase that rolls around smoothly and will last you for many years . It’s built for business travelers, so you can expect it to last for tons of trips. However, despite the bag being outstanding in every aspect, Tumi’s warranty is disappointing, and its price point is very high. You’re better off buying a Briggs & Riley bag if you’re looking for a high-end suitcase that will last decades.

Overall, the Alpha 3 carry-on is a great choice for business travel, but there are more affordable choices out there that are equally good .

As others have said, this runs small. I had to trim off the end of a standard Oral B toothbrush to be able to easily fit it into one of the "narrow" compartments! But in the large, main compartment I can fit several travel-size toiletries and a Braun razor. If I didn't carry the razor, I could fit a compact hair brush. The main benefit is flexibility in packing. You can lay it "open" and flat, or you can zip it up and let it fill a more rectangular space. I adapted from a larger, traditional dopp kit but learned to carry less stuff, and it's working out okay.
