Australian YouTube Channels To Watch 2023. Travel, 4WD, Camping & Caravanning.

youtube travel australia

Updated  29 January 2023.

Oh boy, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole that is Youtube and surfaced with these Australian Youtube channels to watch and subscribe to in 2023.

Youtube has come a long way since its launch in 2005. No longer dominated by short bursts of random videos, it has become an octane fuelled juggernaut of high quality productions. But there are also some channels that can inspire and inform, all while keeping a down to earth and authentic style of video.

Australian travel, 4wding, camping and caravanning content creators on YouTube offer loads of advice, product reviews and showcase amazing destinations.

I’ve put together Australian Youtube channels to watch, to really help you discover what’s out there in the Australian travel, 4wding, camping and caravanning universe.

I've broken things down into three categories (Blokes, Families, Couples) and in alphabetical order. If there is a particular type of channel you prefer, just scroll on down to reach the category you're interested in.

Just click on the video for each one you like and you will be able to support Australian Made content.

10 Awesome Australian Road Trips (For Your World Travel Bucket List)

Australian road trips

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial policies .

As a native of Tasmania who has traveled the country extensively, I’d argue that Australian road trips rank among the best in  the world.

Though I may be prejudiced, I think my homeland truly has it all.

There are jaw-dropping natural landscapes, some of the world’s most liveable cities, and minimal road traffic outside of the few major metropolitan areas.

10 Australian Road Trips for your World Bucket List via @greenglobaltrvl

Whether you seek weird and wonderful wildlife, photogenic landscapes, charming historical towns, or simply the wind in your hair, there are a wide range of epic road trips in Australia that will leave you never wanting to stop exploring.

So let’s dive into some of the country’s most iconic scenic road trips, highlighting each drive’s main attractions along with some helpful insider tips.

  • The Great Ocean Road (Victoria)
  • Tasmania’s East Coast
  • Adelaide to Darwin (Australia’s center through the Outback)
  • Darwin-Kakadu Loop (Northern Territory)
  • The Great Tropical Drive (Queensland)
  • Gibb River Road (Outback Adventure)
  • Sydney to Brisbane a.k.a Pacific Coast Drive
  • Tarkine Drive (Tasmania’s Wilderness)
  • Kangaroo Island

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD -Twelve Apostles

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

The Great Ocean Road is not only Australia’s most notable drive, but also one of the most popular, scenic, and beloved touring routes in the world.

Stretching for over 150 miles along Victoria’s south coast, the route provides visitors with breathtaking ocean views around every bend.

Hugging the coast for pretty much the entire way from Torquay to Warrnambool, the Great Ocean Road provides incredible natural attractions, wildlife , and seaside towns. Here’s a look at a few of the major highlights along the way:

Your Great Ocean Road journey begins in Torquay, home to one of Australia’s finest surfing beaches. Bells Beach is where the pros come to surf, and Torquay is the birthplace of famous surf brands such as Rip Curl and Quicksilver. Enjoy catching a wave yourself, or simply watch the pro surfers hang ten from the cliff-top car park.

Twelve Apostles

The star attraction of the Great Ocean Road is the Twelve Apostles. This geological attraction consists of a group of limestone monoliths (which were caused by erosion) rising out of the ocean. Despite the attraction’s name, there were originally only nine stacks. The number now stands at eight, since a 160-foot stack recently fell. Have your camera ready in case another one topples, but photographing them just as they are is equally remarkable.

Great Otway National Park

In Great Otway National Park , rugged coastline meets lush rainforest. Here you can see stunning Triplet Falls, or marvel at the glow worms of Melba Gully. The Great Ocean Walk, which extends over 100km from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles, passes through the park (bikes and horses are also permitted). The park is listed as an Important Bird Area and offers several campsites. It’s also ranked among Australia’s best National Parks .

Located in the heart of the GOR,  you’ll find the wildlife-rich area of Apollo Bay. Here you can search for Koalas among the gum trees in the nearby Kennett River Area, or enjoy a guided kayak tour among countless Australian Fur Seals. The area is home to lovely restaurants, cafes, museums, and beaches.

Warrnambool

Finnish your GOR trip in Warrnambool, where you’ll be rewarded with the sight of Southern Right Whales, who return to the waters off Warrnambool’s Logans Beach each year to calve. Take a side trip to Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve for guided and self-guided tours to spot Emus, Kangaroos, and Echidnas inside an enormous volcanic crater.

Insider Tips • A great place to spot Koalas in Kennett River is off of Grey River Road. Scan the gum trees carefully: Koalas don’t make much movement during the day, as they are constantly at rest. • As hard as it may be, make sure to keep your eyes on the road. The route is narrow, has many twists and turns, and may be slippery at times. • Watch your speed, since the speed limit changes frequently along the GOR. This will help ensure the safety of the local wildlife. • Take your time and spread the drive over several days in order to truly appreciate the incredible scenery.

Tasmania Road Trip, East Coast -Port Arthur

TASMANIA’S EAST COAST

Tasmania, Australia’s island state, offers incredible landscapes that are filled with an array of native fauna (and not many people). The island’s east coast offers one of Australia’s best road trips, rich with history and the finest beaches. Begin in Hobart and make your way north along the east coast to Launceston (or vice versa) to experience some of Tasmania’s greatest attractions.

Port Arthur

This 19 th  century Australian penal colony-turned-open air museum is one of Tasmania’s main attractions. Explore more than 30 restored buildings and ruins, including the penitentiary, flour mill, Commandant’s House, and the Isle of the Dead cemetery. While in the area you’ll also want to check out natural attractions such as the Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, and the Tessellated Pavement.

Maria Island

Offering both wildlife and historical ruins, this island lies in the Tasman Sea and is reached by ferry service from the town of Triabunna. The island is part of  Maria Island National Park , which is home to 11 of the state’s 12 endemic bird species as well as Wombats, Kangaroos, and the famous  Tasmanian Devils . A visit to the Painted Cliffs is an absolute must, and camping overnight will allow you to explore the island in greater depth.

Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park  occupies the Freycinet Peninsula, and is home to one of Tasmania’s most photographed landscapes, Wineglass Bay. Enjoy hiking trails to white sand beaches, which are surrounded by granite peaks and home to beautiful birds such as the Sea Eagles. The park offers basic camping sites as well as luxury eco-lodge accommodation options.

Bay of Fires

Stretching roughly 50km along the northern east coast, the Bay of Fires offers one of Australia’s most scenic coastal landscapes. Visitors can enjoy extremely crystal-clear waters and pure white sand beaches. Named for the aboriginal campfires spotted by early explorers, the area is also ablaze with fiery orange lichen-covered boulders.

Insider Tips • Be sure to check out Hobart, the state’s capital. There you will find the iconic Salamanca Markets, which are held each Saturday and feature hundreds of arts, crafts, and food stalls. • Plan to get to Port Arthur early if you want to beat the crowds. Pre-purchasing tickets online will save time when you arrive. Those tickets are good for two consecutive days, so take your time exploring. Be sure to bring comfortable footwear, sunscreen, and clothing for the weather , as most of the tour is outdoors. • Tasmania becomes very popular during the summer season , which is December through March in the southern hemisphere. So booking accommodations and car rental early is vital. Many campsites either book out far in advance or are on a lottery system, which is held much earlier in the year.

Road Trips through Australia - Adelaide to Darwin -Uluru

ADELAIDE TO DARWIN

Cutting through the center of the continent, you’ll find an incredible Australian road trip that takes you through the heart of the iconic Outback. Since it is a solid 30-plus hour drive through vast expanses of desert landscape, you’ll probably want to take several days to a week in order to experience all the gorgeous scenery along the way.

Home to nearly 75% of southern Australia’s population, Adelaide is still far less busy than Sydney or Melbourne. The city boasts an impressive range of museums, cafes, fine dining restaurants, gardens, and great festivals throughout the year. It’s centrally located to explore famous Australian wine regions such as Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Clare Valley.

Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is the world-renowned town that lies mostly below ground due to the extremely hot summer temperatures. It’s been used as the set for various movies, including Mad Max. Popular activities there include   shopping or fossicking (Australian slang for searching) for Australian opals or staying in an underground hotel.

Uluru  is without a doubt Australia’s most famous natural landmark. Held sacred by the indigenous Pitjantjatjara Anangu people, Uluru is a large sandstone rock rising nearly 350 meters above the Outback. It’s best viewed at sunset or sunrise, when it turns a fiery red color. As darkness falls, you can enjoy a star-filled sky far removed from any light pollution. The area is home to a surprisingly great diversity of flora and fauna, including the adorable lizard known as the Thorny Devil. Sadly, Uluru is currently facing the threat of mass tourism .

Alice Springs

Located halfway between Adelaide and Darwin, the town of Alice Springs is the gateway to exploring Australia’s Red Centre. Explore the area’s wildlife with a visit to the Desert Park , Reptile Centre, or Kangaroo Sanctuary. Natural attractions in this area include the Larapinta Trail, Ormiston Gorge, and West MacDonnell National Park.

Insider Tips • The famous passenger train known as The Ghan follows the same basic route and offers a luxurious return option instead of driving. But it is just a brief overview of what the area has to offer. • Climbing Uluru is currently allowed, but it is  strongly discouraged out of respect for the local Aboriginal people. After October 26, 2019, the climb will officially be closed to the public (hopefully for good). • Be sure to visit the equally impressive Kata Tjuṯa rock formations, which are also known as the Olgas. They consist of 36 orange-colored domes: Mount Olga towers over Uluru at 3,500 feet.

Darwin- Kakadu Australian Road Trip Loop -Crocodile

THE DARWIN-KAKADU LOOP

This awesome road trip offers visitors a chance to explore the Australian region made famous by Crocodile Dundee . A drive through the Top End of Australia’s Northern Territory provides refreshing waterholes, Aboriginal rock art sites, and, of course, Saltwater Crocodiles.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park, filled with one-third of Australia’s bird species as well as a wealth of mammals and reptiles. Take a scenic flight over Kakadu’s Jim Jim Falls and  Twin Falls for a bird’s eye view, or swim beneath them to cool off. Cruise the wetlands and billabongs in search of massive crocodiles and wading birds such as the black-necked stork. You can also see Aboriginal rock art dating back more than 20,000 years.

Litchfield National Park

In this national park you can walk amongst termite mounds the size of basketball players as you make your way to the numerous waterfalls Litchfield is known for. History buffs will want to visit the Bamboo Creek Tin Mine. You can also learn about the lives of Australian pioneers by visiting the Blyth Homestead, which dates back to the 1920s.

Named after the famed naturalist (who sailed there in 1839), Darwin is the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory. Popular activities there include taking a sunset harbour cruise, watching a movie in an open air cinema, or swimming with a massive crocodile at Crocosaurus Cove. Head to the Nightcliff Foreshore for a wide array of outdoor recreation opportunities, food vans, and stunning sea views.

Insider Tips • Crocodiles can be found in nearly every river and waterhole in this area. So always be cautious when swimming, even if Crocodile warning signs are not present. Also, carry plenty of water and bug repellent. • Car rentals in the Northern Territory usually have mileage limits and may not be allowed on unsealed roads. Road-tripping in camper vans and camper trailers  are becoming increasingly popular. •If you dislike crowds, avoid Kakadu from June to August. This is peak tourist season, as it falls within Australian school holidays. April to June will provide smaller crowds with pleasant weather and running waterfalls.

Australia's Great Tropical Drive Road Trip includes the Great Barrier Reef

 THE GREAT TROPICAL DRIVE

With over two dozen different driving routes, Queensland’s Great Tropical Drive allows you to explore some of Australia’s most incredible destinations. From the Daintree Rainforest and access to the Great Barrier Reef, this is a great region for nature lovers to explore. You can stay in beautiful seaside cities and witness rare and endangered wildlife all along the way.

Daintree Rainforest

Witness the world’s oldest rainforest, which is filled with strange animals that are found nowhere else on earth.  These include large Cassowaries, Tree Kangaroos, Ulysses Butterflies, and Boyd’s Forest Dragons. Then head north towards Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. Your drive will also include an exciting ferry across the Daintree River, where you may spot Crocodiles as you go.

Great Barrier Reef

Easily accessed as a day trip from Cairns and Port Douglas, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, stretching some 2,000 kilometres along the Queensland coastline. Despite coral bleaching, it remains one of the world’s best places to SCUBA dive .It’s home to 30 different species of cetaceans, over 1,600 species of fish, 3,000 species of mollusk, and around 125 species of sharks and stingrays. You can also explore your choice of over 900 islands, including Hamilton, Fitzroy, and Lizard Island.

Cairns, Port Douglas, & Townsville

All three of these cities offer a wide variety of attractions, including museums, sanctuaries, tropical beaches, and more. From here you can access the Great Barrier Reef, take a day trip to the Atherton Tablelands, or hop aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Insider Tips • Head to Mission Beach if you really want to see a wild Cassowary, as they are a common sight here. • Many cities in the area offer a wide range of apartments where you can have your own full kitchen, laundry facilities, and scenic balconies. • Coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef Park was extensive, but 85% of that damage happened on a single 370-mile section. Most tour operators will take you to snorkel/dive more pristine sections.

Australian Outback Road Trips -Windjana Gorge National Park

GIBB RIVER ROAD

For a truly wild Outback adventure, take on the 670km 4WD track that stretches from Wyndham to Derby in Western Australia . Many side roads and even parts of the main road are rugged, with dirt and gravel rather than tarmac. But many improvements have been made in recent years, so you don’t need to have years of 4WD experience to tackle the route.

Windjana Gorge National Park

Windjana Gorge National Park is often touted as the best place in the world to see Freshwater Crocodiles in the wild. Located in the Kimberley region, the park also offers a 100-meter wide gorge with towering cliffs. Visitors can enjoy incredible camping opportunities , but please be aware that access may be restricted during the wet season.

Other Gorges

Driving the Gibb River Road provides access to numerous gorgeous gorges and wonderful waterfalls. The most notable ones are Lennard Gorge, Bell Gorge, Tunnel Creek, and Manning Gorge & Falls. Access to the gorges is usually prohibited during the wet season.

Insider Tips •Travel in this region is restricted to the dry season (April-October), and 2WD is not recommended until well after the wet season due to water on roads. •Although a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended, you can access many of the main attractions in a 2WD vehicle during the peak of the dry season. Always carry spare tires, petrol, and water, just in case!

TARKINE DRIVE

Tarkine Drive is a circular route beginning and ending in Stanley or Smithton, which provides access to Tasmania’s true, rugged wilderness. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Australia’s largest patch of temperate rainforest, mountain ranges, rushing rivers, cool caves, and the  craggy western coastline.

Arthur River

Arthur River makes for a great entrance point to coastal walks and forest exploration. Experience the massive waves brought on by the “roaring forties” as they batter the coastline at the Edge of the World, Gardiner Point.

Hiking & Wildlife

The Tarkine is home to some of Australia’s rarest animals , some of which no longer found on the mainland. Search for Tasmanian Devils, Platypus, Echidnas, Wombats, Bandicoots, Quolls, and the extremely rare Orange-bellied Parrot. Numerous hiking trails lead to lookouts, waterfalls, Aboriginal sites, and the picturesque coast.

Insider Tips • Although the Thylacine or Tasmanian tiger has long been considered extinct, they are rumored to possibly still exist in this remote stretch wilderness, which has suitable habitat. • Take a detour south to Corinna Wilderness Retreat for some incredible kayaking and cruises on the Pieman River.

Kangaroo Island Australian Road Trip- Koala Bears via greenglobaltrvl

KANGAROO ISLAND

Kangaroo Island is known as the Galapagos Islands of Australia. Access to this wildlife-rich area is available via ferry from Cape Jervis on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula. The island has a large population of Koalas as well as a host of endemic plants found nowhere else. Other rare wildlife found there includes the Glossy Black Cockatoo and Rosenberg’s Goanna.

Flinders Chase National Park

Flinders Chase National Park is located at the western end of of he island. Visitors can enjoy the sight of the beautiful Cape du Couedic Lighthouse as they walk along many hiking trails, including the Platypus Waterholes Walk and the Heritage Walk. Check out the seal colony near Admirals Arch, and the truly and aptly named Remarkable Rocks.

Seal Bay Conservation Park

Located on the southern coast of Kangaroo Island, this park is home to the third largest Sea Lion colony in Australia. Access to the beach where you’ll find the large breeding colony is limited to ranger-led beach tours for their protection. If you don’t care about seeing them up close, you can simply view them from the boardwalk. Tours are held daily, and the visitor center provides further insight into the life of the Sea Lions.

Insider Tips • Get a chance to see Penguins via a night tour of the colony located in Penneshaw, just as you depart the ferry on Kangaroo Island. • Be sure to check out Little Sahara, where you can sandboard down some seriously impressive dunes. • For conservation purposes, there are strict quarantine laws on the island. Be aware that things such as potatoes and honey are no-gos.

Grampians, MacKenzie Falls- Australian Road Trip via @greenglobaltrvl

THE GRAMPIANS

This excellent Australian road trip takes you through Grampians National Park , which includes sandstone mountain ranges and rich Aboriginal history. Outdoor recreation seekers head to the Grampians for mountain biking, rock climbing, and numerous hiking trails. Scenic lookouts abound, with many easily reached by car. The circular route around the park is easily accessible from Melbourne or Adelaide.

Halls Gap is the main town that services travelers to the Grampians area, offering diverse accommodation options ranging from campsites to luxury 5-star retreats. Make sure to visit the Brambuk Cultural Center, which is owned and operated by Aboriginal people. There you can engage in activities such as boomerang throwing as well as learn about the indigenous culture through artifacts, talks, music, and dance.

MacKenzie Falls

A must-see while driving through the Grampians, this stunning waterfall flows all year long. It can be seen via a lookout point or by taking the lovely MacKenzie Falls Walk. Note that swimming beneath the falls is strictly prohibited.

Pinnacle & Reeds Lookouts

Make your way to the top of Pinnacle Lookout if you want to see the park’s impressive rock formations in detail, as well as Halls Gap below you. Access is available via the Sundial car park, the Wonderland car park, or (for the truly adventurous) from the base of the mountains.

Reeds Lookout is best accessed from Mt. Victory Road, and provides incredible sunset viewing over the Victoria Valley and Range. The lookout path is fully wheelchair accessible.

Insider Tips • You’ll find that wineries in the Grampians region produce incredible Shiraz and Riesling, so pop into a local cellar door for a tasting. • A visit during autumn will reveal vibrantly colored fall foliage that’s just begging to be photographed. • Be sure to check out the Grampians Grape Escape wine, food, and music festival , which is held every year in May. –Megan Jerrard

Our Top 50 Australian Family Travel Blogs

December 1, 2022 by Bryony @ Coasting Australia Leave a Comment

Since we made the decision to travel Australia full time while the kids are small, we’ve been amazed at the huge travelling family community that we have discovered.

It seems that more and more families are questioning ‘the norm’, and finding an alternative way to spend time together, escape the daily grind and have a break from too much technology.

We’ve been so inspired by the people who we have met along the way that we thought we would put a list together of families who you can follow to motivate you on your travels, give you information on doing the lap, and help convince you to take the leap if you haven’t already.

The list is in no particular order (there is no way I could pick a favourite!) we’ve included some basic info on the family plus links to where you can find them online and on social media.

If you’d like to be added to the list please fill in the contact form at the bottom.

See you on the road!

The original ‘Mumma’ of Aussie family big lappers – Mandi is now dedicated to make the dream happen for others and to save families money all over Australia with the amazing TAWK scheme where kids stay free at member parks .

Hopefully you can find some great families on the list to follow you and inspire your travels – if you would like to be included on the list please fill in the form at the bottom of this post and we’ll be in touch.

For book lovers we’ve put together a list of our favourite children’s books for travelling Australia to get the kids excited about your big adventure.

If you’ve been inspired to start your own Australian family travel blog, or maybe you have a Facebook page and want to take it to the next level and have your own website – then let us help you start with our personalised and interactive course. How to Start a Family Travel Blog will guide you through all the steps you need to get started – from choosing the perfect site name to all the technical stuff like registering your domain, finding the best hosting and designing your site. I also guide you through all the social media channels that you can sign up to and how to get the most out of them, as well as giving you insights on how to start making money from your blog. Over the last 2 years we have also been invited to review thousands of dollars worth of tours and attractions – we let you in on how we made it happen and the best way to approach and work with brands. We have also created a private Facebook group just for course students – where there are extra resources and training sessions and I am regularly on hand to answer questions. We also offer any trips, tours or experiences that we are unable to attend to the students in our group too – over the last couple of months we’ve given away tickets to attractions in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

If you’d like more info on the course, or to see the full curriculum or to sign up – you can learn more here .

Next week we’ll be sharing our list of our favourite websites and Facebook pages that help travelling families in Australia – if you don’t want to miss out you can sign up for our newsletter here and receive our monthly round up of posts right to your inbox.

Lapping Oz

Lapping Oz

Family Members We are a family of four, originally from Western Sydney. Adam, Mia and our two children Jett (16) & Skye (13).

Travelling Set-up We are touring Australia in a pre-loved 2011 Coromal Magnum Transforma XC450 Off-Road Caravan. It is a similar concept to the Jayco Expanda and a Windsor Rapid. The caravan had a makeover before we left, including new linen curtains and new dining seat upholstery. During 2021, we gave the caravan some fresh lovin’ after living in it for 2.5 years full-time. Our towing vehicle is a 2014 Volkswagen Amarok that we have owned since new. The Amarok hasn’t missed out on the TLC, with a repaint in Raptor Coating. It’s a tough, scratch-resistant paint – perfect for how we live and play with our 4×4!

2024 Travel Plans This year we have permanently relocated to Tropical North Queensland. We plan to visit and explore our new region. We will be doing trips and venturing out in the same van that we did the Big Lap in a few years ago. There is so much to see and experience and we are looking forward to sharing more about our new surroundings throughout the year.

Travel Checklists

35 thoughts on “29 Australian Travel Blogs You NEED to Follow in 2024”

Thank you for compiling such a comprehensive list. I got to learn about other people experience, and it was really useful.

An awesome list Emma. Have been following you (since Julia Creek, six months into your first trip) and a number of these blogs for a while now. Just love the adventure.

Ahh yes, I remember. Were we camped near each other.. or did I meet you at the Walkabout Creek Hotel?

My husband and I have been travelling Australia in our hybrid van for over a year now. We also have a blog – Flannerysfootprints.wordpress.com I love looking at travel blogs especially by seniors like us!

This is such a great list, thanks for putting it together. I love reading about other peoples experiences in Australia! I also run an expat travel and would love for you to check it out! passportdownunder.com.

Travelling Oz Our Way Been on the road fulltime for 12 months

Great to see so many Aussie’s living the dream! Great wrap up Emma! We will join them all next year once our van arrives, can’t wait!

Wahoo, that’s exciting!

A fantastic blog list you have added here. Thanks for all the great sites which I have found on here.

Awesome list! Makes me look forward to when borders reopen and we can explore the Great Southern Land once again!

I’d also recommend the ATAS blog, which is run by the Australian Federation of Travel Agents. Lots of articles about both international and local destinations, in-the-know tips from travel agents and so on.

Goodness what an epic list, for an epic country! I love how you have included so many families as well so you get a diverse range if opinions about what is good to visit.

This makes it looks like travelling for a long time around Aus in some kind of van/RV is the way to go!

Being such a huge country, a caravan, motorhome or camper is the best way to get around.

We’ve been following My Rig Adventures. Just like our 8 years RVibg North America, we would like to do it in Australia, too!

We love reading your stuff as well because we’re keen to do some RVing across the States.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Sydney for 3 weeks during my college times. Can’t wait to be back to Australia and explore the country beyond Sydney! It’s great that you shared so many useful blogs that I could go back to and refer to when planning my next trip with my husband.

There is so much to explore beyond Sydney, but that definitely gives you a great start. Hopefully you can get back down here one day.

There sure are a lot of travel blogs about Australia! And we’ll make sure to read all these travel blogs before planning our trip to Australia.

It’s a huge thing right now for families and younger people to take off around Australia on ‘The Big Lap.’ So, there are loads of people sharing their experiences for others. It’s great.

Wow, this is such an informative blog post, thank you for sharing! I’ve been to Australia three times now, but the first two times were for work and didn’t allow me much time to explore. Last year we spent a few days in Melbourne and drove the Great Ocean Road which was great! But it’s such a vast country with so many more places to explore so I’m saving this article for future reference 🙂

I can appreciate that work trips really don’t let you explore too much. They’re just a tease really. Funnily enough, we haven’t even done the Great Ocean Road yet, but we’re getting there. Even living here and travelling, the country is just so vast, it all takes time.

Australia is a country I always want to visit, but my fear of snakes won’t really let me at the moment! Maybe reading these bloggers will make me feel a little better about it!

If you visit the big cities you won’t see any snakes, so that’s an option for you.

Wow! This is an amazing list of bloggers and surely all their help and advice would be all anyone needed to help them plan their trip to Australia! So helpful to have so many listed in one place 🙂

It’s a huge collection full of people with loads of experience.

This list is such a great resource! Also, thank you for sharing everyone’s family units. If I’m traveling with kids it is super useful to hear about the experience of others with kids who are around the same general age.

Definitely. It’s always helpful to look at the experiences of those in a similar situation.

Thanks for compiling this helpful list! I’m always really grateful when researching new destinations to find that someone has already done all the leg work and gathered useful information into one place!

Thanks Carly-jo 🙂

Fittingly, a massive list for a massive country. Nice round-up!

Haha massive indeed.

I wish all the best on your journey in Tasmania Annette Dale and the boys

What about Trip in a Van…they have have 40 thousand followers on You tube, Instagram & Facebook. Another one is Sparkys on the Loose – a young couple that alot of people without kids can relate. Thanks.

Yeah everyone knows TIAV. We asked Sparkys if they wanted to be included but they said they’re having a bit of a break to restock the bank balance.

Just started one and hoping to add more content this year getting ready to travel next year hopefully. Recon Adventurers on Facebook , Insta and YouTube.

Wahoo, that’s super exciting!

Guide to Driving Around Australia in a Campervan

Want to drive around Australia? Have enough money for buying or renting a campervan and keep the fridge stocked and the petrol full? Have a good sense of adventure and a willingness to put a few hours behind the wheel? Well, if you do, you’re all set for an Australian adventure.

Before we had kids, Micki and I had the amazing opportunity to spend six months driving around Australia in a campervan that we had bought and outfitted ourselves.

By the sixth month, we had put over 25,000 kilometers on that campervan, driving from Adelaide in South Australia, up through the untamed Outback in the center, then up to Darwin in the north, before crossing over to Cairns, and finally down the east coast of Australia to Sydney.

Even after spending years bouncing around the globe, it was an unforgettable adventure and still one of our favorite travel highlights.

A guide to driving around Australia in a campervan

Australia is the perfect country to drive a campervan or RV, since it has huge spaces and plenty great RV resorts, or Holiday Parks, as they’re often locally known, in nearly every town.

I think that an Australia road trip is probably the best way to see the land down under, especially if you want to see more than just the big cities and get to know the real Australia.

The funny part about our Australia roadtrip was that our first campervan turned out to be a massive lemon. Sure, we only bought it for a few hundred dollars from a hostel where a previous backpacker had left it and managed to sell it for $50 more than we paid (once we realized it wouldn’t pass a safety inspection). In case you’re wondering, we actually sold it to a guy fixes cars, so he profited as well once he fixed it up.

The great part about the whole scenario was that the original van was stocked with tons of extra goodies.

From an extra camping tent and sleeping bags (helpful when we rented a 4×4 and stayed on Fraser Island ) to boogie boards, a portable table and even a nice propane stove that, by the time our trip was complete, we had gotten good use out of nearly everything. So, when we bought our next campervan, for about 20 times the first, we had it totally stocked up without spending an additional penny.

Even better, we bought a queen size mattress for the back, and even a TV! It was a real luxury to curl up in bed at night and watch a some true Australian TV. We were addicted to the first season on Australian Idol (and were cheering for the eventual winner, Guy Sebastian).

Australia road rules and such things as road trains

Initial problems aside, driving around Australia was a breeze. Well, that is, once we figured out that not only did we have to get used to driving on the left side of the road, but we also had to change gears with our left hand (ours had a manual transmission) and things are reversed from what we’re used to in North America.

Since the gear shift was on the steering column, you have no idea how often we turned on the windshield wipers by mistake. It even became a running gag during our trip.

If you’re interested in buying a used Australia campervan , you can check out Gumtree. Not only do they have thousands of Australian campervans, they also have tons of used camping supplies as well to help get you fully outfitted for your own Australia roadtrip.

I’m also not going to lie and say that we didn’t almost get into trouble a few times coming off traffic circles (which weren’t used much in North America then). Not having lane markers when you’re first trying to remember to drive on the left can be problematic in itself, but after doing a few circles you kind of revert to what you’re used to when you finally straighten out, which wasn’t a good thing if you’re a right lane kind of person.

Outside of that and, oh, the one lane bridges, you should be fine. Just remember to look at what’s coming before you drive over them.

Oops. Did I forget to mention having to get off the road when those giant triple trailer trucks they lovingly refer to as road trains pass you by in the Outback?

That’s not really a law, but if you value your vehicle (and consequently your life) it’s not a bad idea to get out of their way. To say that back trailer sways a little is like calling Uluru a little rock in the Outback, and those road trains don’t slow down for anything or anyone. Don’t worry though, there aren’t that many of them, and it’s a nice change of scenery from the miles and miles of unchanging desert scrub.

Oh, did I mention the kangaroos?

Well, you’ll see those for yourself if you drive through the Australian Outback like we did. They’re awesome to see hopping in the distance and don’t worry, you’ll see plenty of them. Just realize that they have no natural predators in Australia and there’s just as good a chance as them jumping into the side of your Australian campervan as you hitting one. You have been warned!

We also learned it’s a bad idea to drive most places in the Outback at night. Between the hopping kangaroos, the swaying road trains, wandering cows, an errant camel or emu and an abundance of wild rabbits in certain parts of Australia, unless you know the area well, it’s best to stay completely off these roads after sundown. Of course, if you’re on the coast or in one of the major cities you should be fine driving at night.

The realities of driving a campervan in Australia

All kidding aside, driving in Australia is easy once you have a few things down pat. Roads in major cities are well marked, and Australia is similar to most countries in regards to road rules and signage. Just realize that each Australian state has its own road rules. You can check them out here if you’re curious.

Since 85% of the Australian population is within 50 kilometers (31 miles) of the coast (see our recent post on things about Australia you didn’t know here ) there are many places to stay, eat and most importantly, refuel, during your Australia road trip.

Once you get into the Outback, things are a little more spread out, so you need to make sure you have some spare gas with you or have a good estimate of how far your campervan or RV can make it on a tank. Luckily, there are usually signs saying how far the next available gas station. Trust us, you don’t want to get stuck in the Outback without fuel.

Outback safety tip: If you run out of fuel, or your campervan breaks down in the Outback, stay with your vehicle and wait for the next vehicle to pass by. The blistering heat is your biggest danger so stay hydrated. It might take hours, but someone will eventually drive by who can help you out.

It’s also important to realize that smaller towns that only have one gas station could close as early as 4 pm.  We spent the night parked in a gas station lot, because we didn’t have enough fuel to make it to the next town, more times than we care to admit.

If you’re looking for the cheapest gas in an area, or even how close the nearest petrol station is, you can grab the Motormouth app . Similar to North America’s Gas Buddy app, their Australian user-based system continually lists the current gas prices around the country. It’s also handy when that red light on your fuel tank starts flashing, and you need to refuel your campervan or RV immediately.

Even more importantly, since the Outback can get quite hot in the day and cool at night, you don’t want to get stuck without water and food. Make sure you have lots of both when you drive towards the Red Centre.

It’s more than likely you’ll be starting your journey from one of the major cities, so make sure to stock up on everything you’ll need at one of the big supermarkets. The farther you go from the big centers, the more costly food becomes and picking up essentials at gas stations is going to hurt the wallet more than a few spoiled or unused food items.

RV Resorts, Holiday Parks and campgrounds

I can honestly say that Australia has some of the nicest campgrounds we’ve seen anywhere in the world. Though the cost of some of the Australian campervan parks can be a little pricey, lots of campgrounds come fully provisioned with hotel quality swimming pools, multiple hot water showers and restrooms, huge cooking areas complete with lots of barbecues and even dedicated outdoor TV viewing areas for those not so nice evenings. Some even have trampolines and miniature golf for the kids.

Our favorite campgrounds in Australia even featured our own personal shower and washroom area as well as a private cooking area. Staying in those campgrounds was like having a very welcome addition to our campervan, giving us extra room to hang out as well as letting us cook our meals far from our beds. It was also cool to pull into your spot and find out what the little half building next to your pad contained.

Important!  Australia has reverse seasons to the northern hemisphere. As such, Christmas vacation for Australians lasts two months and nearly everyone is out camping and enjoying the heat in December and January. If you’re planning to be in Australia during these months, I suggest you book your campgrounds far ahead of time, otherwise you’ll be parking on the street or in parking lots.

One of the biggest campground companies in Australia, with 180 campgrounds scattered across the country, is  Big4 Holiday Parks . They’re among the priciest of the Australian campgrounds however they also tend to have the nicest amenities.

If you want to rough it a bit more, you can also find campgrounds throughout Australia’s National Parks. You can search for campgrounds across all the national parks  here .

For a list of cheaper campgrounds around Australia, check out Explore Australia’s campground list here and the Findacamp site has a great list as well highlighting some of the cheapest campgrounds in Australia.

Buying and selling a campervan in Australia

If you’re looking at buying a campervan in Australia, there are certain months when it’s easier and cheaper to buy a campervan in Australia than others. The same goes for renting a campervan. Australia campervan hire can be surprisingly affordable off season, or during the shoulder season, especially.

December and January are busy across the country, and finding a rental won’t be easy or cheap in these months. If you want to rent, consider going in the shoulder seasons of October or November and February or March. You’ll miss the crowds and added expenses but the weather should still be great.

If you’re considering buying a campervan or RV, you also need enough time to pick out your campervan and enough time to sell it. There are tons of options out there from used buying and selling sites to dealerships. You can also check out local hostel bulletin boards (even if that didn’t work out so well for us).

When it’s time to sell, you can place an ad or even bring your campervan to one of the local swap meets that specializes in selling vans, campervans and RV’s from other travelers. There should be one in every major city.

Just note that there are better and worse times to buy and sell your campervan in Australia depending on the city you’re in. April to July tends to be the worst time of year to sell your vehicle in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne, however those could be great times to buy one. December to June is also bad in northern Cairns and Darwin, and both Brisbane and Adelaide can be tough to sell in year round. We ended up buying our campervan from a local in Adelaide, since there weren’t that many travelers selling theirs when we were there.

Vehicle Registration is valid for a year in Australia and usually requires an address. We just used our hostel’s address to sign up and it went pretty smoothly. Depending on the year of the vehicle and where it was initially registered, also note that some vehicles require a safety inspection before they’re allowed to be registered to someone else, so make sure the vehicle is roadworthy before giving over the money.

Final thoughts on driving an RV or campervan around Australia

Already have your Australian campervan fully stocked and ready to roll? All you need to do now is pick a route and set a timetable.

Are you going to drive The Great Ocean Road in the south past Melbourne and enjoy beautiful beaches and light houses?

Dreaming of jumping crocodiles and pristine canyons? Maybe driving from Darwin down to Katherine Gorge is the trip for you?

Want your area a little less crowded? How about having a quiet wilderness adventure on the west cost in Western Australia?

Still too crowded? How about checking out the Red Centre and experiencing the wide open spaces of Australia’s outback while you take in iconic sites like Uluru and the Devils’ Marbles?

Too remote for you? How about checking out rainforests, the great barrier reef and gorgeous stretches of beach as you live up the beach bum lifestyle in tropical North Queensland?

Maybe the mainland is too much for you? All that space giving you pause. Maybe you should check out Tasmania’s rural and natural beauty and check out Tasmania’s sleepy towns and secluded beaches.

No matter where you go or which route you decide on, taking a road trip around Australia in your campervan, RV or even just a van will be a memory you’ll keep forever and no matter how long you go for, there will always be something new to see on your next adventure.

Safe travels!

Got a tip about driving a campervan around Australia? We’d love to hear from you. Drop us an email or leave a comment below for everyone to read.

Such a comprehensive post! I am Australian and do love reading about how people from other countries see our country. Rural and remote Australia is especially beautiful – the isolation is a great experience, but really, its all about the views. We love the Northern Territory so much we have camped up in Darwin for about a year to check it out further – such beautiful desert! We have spent many months doing road trips in Australia, although it is such a big country that there is always more to explore. Thanks for the post 🙂

This van is so cool, I would like to go to australia trip and wanna get a outstanding experience of my life

This is great. You made me nostalgic for the road trip we did around New Zealand in a campervan. I can only imagine how cool this must have been in Australia. The only knock I have about the experience was that I think I saw more of the New Zealand road not the scenery being the driver.

This will make sure to help us enjoy our road travel in Australia this year with my friends. Thank you for sharing this informative blog with us.

Great tip, I sure everyone will enjoy their road trip with this information. Thank you for posting.

Nice post. You look really comfortable. I’d like to start traveling soon as well xD.

Haven’t been to Australia since 2005 and heading back with 4 kids this time! Is it worth waiting until we arrive to check for local deals for Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays, Fraser Island, Scuba Diving or should we order before we leave?

Mathew, I would look now into the times you want to go and make sure it’s not busy or a holiday. If it is, it’s best to book in advance, otherwise you can wait until you get to Australia to book things and see if they’ll give you a better deal. If there’s 6 of you all together then you might be able to get an even better deal by contacting them directly rather than using their online forms.

Nice post! How did the van do on the west coast/in land, did you have any trouble with gravel roads?

The van worked well pretty much everywhere we went across Australia however we did run into problems along the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia. The problem is that it had rained heavily the two days before we attempted it and we were well advised to hold off an extra day just to let it settle a bit so we did. The dirt and gravel track was definitely a little slippery in sections but the biggest problem is that the red mud clung tenaciously to the underside of our van and it hardened into super tough clay.

We were probably carrying hundreds of pounds more in weight by the time we arrived in Coober Pedy and it took a lot of work to get the majority of it off the camper van. 5 months later, when we sold the van, you could still find a chunk of that Australian red mud stuck in odd places.

So, other than the rainy season, I think it’s fine to drive most vans along Australia’s gravel roads however it’s never a bad idea to talk to a local if you’re unsure of the quality of the drive and leave your name and travel itinerary with someone in places that are off the grid so someone can track you down if you get lost or stuck. As we were told a dozen times, the Outback can be a brutal place if you aren’t properly prepared or outfitted, especially in the hot season.

Awesome! its very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing. I really appreciate you guys.

great article… thanks for sharing this article with us.

we had a campervan and loved driving around in it – pulling up anywhere, and falling asleep to wake up in the morning to see where we were! It was so well set up that we slept in places such as overlooking the beach, or even near waterfalls. Cant wait to get another campervan so we can keep exploring Australia in places that motorhomes cant go 🙂

thanks for the Australia guides really helps me a lot..thanks for this post

That is pretty cool that vans can be stationed at campgrounds. I need a van that fits at least 8 people. I’ll have to rent something so that all of my friends can pile in and travel the U.S.

Southern Limestone Coast, Mount Gambier, the Best Bush Camp & bogged on the beach

We’ve found our happy place! After exploring Mount Gambier and the array of fantastic visitor experiences on offer, including our recommendation for the number one bucket list experience in South Australia, we camp up at our favourite bush camp in the state, directly behind the dunes at beautiful Southend beach. We hit the sand for a day of beach driving and make a rookie mistake, getting ourselves bogged on the way to Beachport.    Plus we fall in love with a quaint coastal village and witness the most spectacular sunset while driving one of Australia’s most sensational scenic roads.    Learn more about Kilsby Sinkhole here - https://www.kilsbysinkhole.com/   Get your hands on our South Australia Touring Guide eBook and start planning your road trip today! - https://shopthefeelgoodfamily.com/products/south-australia-ebook-the-ultimate-touring-guide   Watch our brand new TV series Feel Good RoadTrips on Channel 7TWO at 3pm Sunday’s, nationwide.
