Turnpike Troubadours Just Dropped a Bunch of New 2023 Tour Dates

Fresh off the release of their first new single in more than five years, “Mean Old Sun,” and premiering it live at Stagecoach, the Turnpike Troubadours have announced a string of tour dates for late summer and throughout the fall. The tour, which will follow the August 25 release of their album A Cat in the Rain , includes a run of arenas and amphitheaters across the Midwest and Southeast, as well as stops in New York and Washington, D.C.

The Troubadours, who discussed their return to touring and the making of A Cat in the Rain with Rolling Stone this week in an exclusive interview, will kick off the headlining tour on August 24 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Turnpike Troubadours are hitting the road once again this summer, with a range of shows lined up across the US.

The eclectic, alt-country band will be bringing their electrifying suite of fan-favourites to states such as New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Texas and more throughout 2023.

In addition to a selection of headlining dates in support of their upcoming album, A Cat in the Rain , the Turnpike Troubadours will also be appearing at a handful of festivals, including FairWell Festiva l in July and Born & Raised Music Festival in mid-September.

Fans attending any of the Turnpike Troubadours’ 2023 shows can expect the six-piece outfit to deliver the captivating, high-energy performances they've become known for.

With A Cat in the Rain en route to streaming platforms on August 25th, we're expecting the country-rockers to introduce a few new tracks into their 2023 setlist as the release date approaches.

They've already been performing the new album's title track and the lead single, ‘Mean Old Sun’, along with classics such as ‘7 & 7’, ‘Pay No Rent’ and ‘Kansas City Southern’.

Although their Stagecoach 2023 set was slightly shorter than usual and therefore didn't feature all the staples, the hugely popular group have also been performing their much-loved cover of John Hartford's iconic track, ‘Long Hot Summer Days’, during other shows.

Turnpike Troubadours paying it forward at Jacksonville concert

R .C. Edwards remembers what it was like coming up in the music business, when his band Turnpike Troubadours was playing opening-act sets for crowds that were there to see someone else.

That's why he's taking the time on this tour to pay attention to Elle King and Colby Acuff, the two acts that will open for the Troubadours when they play Friday night at Daily's Place in Jacksonville.

"We try to take care of the people who open for us," Edwards said in a phone interview. "Sometimes it's just so busy out there you just don’t get a chance to interact."

Edwards said he's just paying it forward from the days when Turnpike Troubadours toured with Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Willie Nelson and the Old 97s.

"When we were coming up, a lot of people were a lot nicer to us than they should have been," he said.

The Troubadours headlined a show at Daily's Place in November 2022 , but Edwards said fans should expect a different show this time. The band put out a new album, "A Cat in the Rain," in the meantime and several cuts from the records are part of the nightly setlist. But Edwards said there is still plenty of room in the show for old favorites such as "Good Lord Lorrie," "7&7" and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead."

As the band puts out new records — "A Cat in the Rain" is their sixth full-length studio album — there is less and less room for cover songs. They've done songs from the Beatles, Robert Earl Keen, Dawes and Alabama in the past, but now they're doing almost exclusively original songs in their shows.

"We love what we’re doing," Edwards said. "In the early days, we might do a Merle Haggard song, a bluegrass standard. When you put your own material out, you kind of feel obligated to play it."

The Daily's show will be the second of the tour for the band. They're coming to Jacksonville straight from the Tortuga Music Festival in South Florida and the tour is a mix of headlining shows and festival dates. Edwards said it doesn't really make a difference to him if there are 5,000 or 50,000 people in the crowd. The goal, he said, is to be consistent.

The tour never leaves the U.S. Edwards said the band has played a handful of dates in Europe but there are no plans to go back this year. "We went hard for 15 years. We like to sort of pick our punches now."
