Celebrating Four Years of Excellence: Lauder College House

At a grand celebration on Thursday, September 5, 2019, President Amy Gutmann and the Lauder family unveiled a new name for what was formerly known as New College House. Lauder College House continues the great tradition of student engagement that has brought residents back to live there year after year.

In the spirit of getting to know Lauder College House, here are not only a few facts about the House but also a video showing what LCH has to offer!

The Traditions Commission was a group of NCH residents who lead the house community in the process of selecting house colors, motto, and mascot during Fall 2016! Student leaders in this group were Morgan Thweatt, Nyasia Bey, and Jerome Cohen, with RAGA staff members Elaida Dimwamwa, Kevin Chen, Tyler Hallmark, and Haley Morin.

  • The House motto, “ semper ad meliora ,” means, “always onward toward better things.”
  • The Meliora Ambassador role was implemented during Fall of 2017 as a way to adapt to NCH’s transition from a first-year to four-year community. Upperclassmen take on the role of peer leader and support to help welcome new students and make connections. The official groundbreaking ceremony for New College House took place on November 8, 2014. Your House Dean was not yet a staff member at Penn, and your Faculty Director was a House Fellow at Kings Court English College House.
  • The Class of 2020 is the first class of students to have lived in NCH. Twenty four of the students who originally lived here (including two RAs and one GA) continued to return to NCH in subsequent years, making this their home throughout their Penn careers!
  • RA Kevin Chen was the first Convocation Flag Bearer for NCH in 2016. Since that year, the role of Flag Bearer has been taken up by undergraduate house leaders, either RAs or Meliora Ambassadors.
  • Class of 1969 Green (at the top of the Lifted Lawn, overlooking Heyman Courtyard) was dedicated this past summer.

People and Places at Penn: College Houses

College houses model lifelong learning and provide a home away from home. three house directors discuss their distinctive roles..

crowds at move-in in elevator lobby

One of the world’s few undisputed truths is that no one can eat quite as much or quite as well as a college student. Kathryn McDonald knows this, and likes to bake to boot. In a sunny, open kitchen on Gutmann College House ’s second floor, a beaproned McDonald, long hair tucked into a low bun, uses a cookie-baking session to introduce herself to the students newly moved in to Gutmann College House. Here, McDonald serves as house director, living and working alongside students.

McDonald is one of 13 such directors, each serving a different building with a mission of fostering residential communities for undergraduate students in Penn’s College House system, which includes Riepe (now under renovation), Ware, Fisher Hassenfeld, Hill, Kings Court English, Stouffer, Lauder, Gutmann, the High Rises (Harnwell, Harrison, and Rodin), and the Low Rises (W.E.B. Du Bois and Gregory). Now required for all first- and second-year students, the Houses provide opportunities for students to connect with each other, along with the faculty and staff living in the houses.

In addition to the directors, each College House has a minimum of three live-in faculty members, who host lectures and programs and serve as academic advisers. Ideally, the College Houses are “a community within a community,” says Deven Patel , faculty director and associate professor of South Asian studies, who lives in Harrison House with his wife. “We not only live with each other, but we also have a shared experience with residents.”

At Harrison, Patel says he has been able to model and mentor the academic life outside of the traditional classroom space. Patel also coordinates a wellness program, teaching basic mindfulness techniques and facilitating peer-to-peer mentorship, an initiative he hopes to expand.

Each College House has its own identity, programs, and traditions, and the faculty and house directors set the tone for their residential communities, offering seasonal programming, intellectual engagement, game nights, and, of course, food.

The programs and co-curricular features of the College Houses are meant to foster academic curiosity and help students engage with lifelong learning, with some professors teaching classes in the College House space that all students can attend. It should feel like home, McDonald says. “That should be the community that everyone should want to come back to and feel like they can be themselves.”

Penn Today spoke with three house directors about their roles and what makes their Houses unique.

Eric Cottrell Harrison College House

“What’s fun about the job is it’s not the same thing every day,” says Eric Cottrell , director of Harrison College House , one of the three high-rise dorms on campus. At any given time, he might be planning a field trip to see a show at the Kimmel Center, doing a team-building session with resident advisers (RAs), playing Quizzo at Harrison’s monthly Saturday Night Live event, or discussing college football with students.

eric cottrell at a table with students

“Harrison is a big House with a small community feel,” Cottrell says. “We achieve that, I think, through modeling our values,” which Cottrell says are curiosity, inclusion, wellness, and service. Armed with those and the motto, “Not for self, but for all,” Cottrell and the 24 RAs he supervises design programming aimed at creating community. “What does it mean to live a well-balanced life in this community?” he asks. “How do we be inclusive of everybody on the floor?”

These conversations are vital, he says. Conflict resolution is an important part of the college experience. “A lot of students really just don’t know how to communicate their needs and then compromise for a mutual agreement,” he says. In these cases, Cottrell and the RAs can help students take the time to navigate and learn these soft skills, he says.

eric cottrell welcoming students to harrison house

Outside of work, Cottrell is an avid athlete, running, attending fitness classes, and playing recreational sports with the Stonewall Sports, an organization dedicated to creating safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.

“I helped lead the 2023 Stonewall Sports National Tournament and summit and I share that with the students and help them understand the bigger picture of being involved,” Cottrell says. “All of these values interplay with one another: the wellness, the service, the inclusion … We try to promote that through the House so that our students can engage in the House but bring that further than just Harrison.”

Harrison College House Location: 3910 Irving St. Opened in: 1970 Number of residents: 801 Motto: “Not for self, but for all” Special features: Game and resource room, computer room, fitness room, library, 12 laundry rooms, 24 lounges (including the top floor’s sky lounge), music practice rooms, seminar room, study rooms

Mitchell Holston Lauder College House

Like many people working in student affairs, Mitchell Holston was once just an involved student. Originally from Dadeville, Alabama, Holston attended Auburn University (and later Virginia Tech for graduate school), where he was diversity ambassador president and served as a leader for new student orientation. “I did a lot of different things,” he says. Eventually, this led Holston to ask university administrators, “How did you get to do what you do?”

mitchell holtson sitting at a table in lauder

Now house director for Lauder College House , Holston “sets the tone,” according to his resident advisers, a team of 10 (five undergraduates and five graduate students) who interact with Holston on everything from crisis counseling to programming field trips.

His own experiences as a first-generation, low-income student influence how Holston interacts with students at Lauder, he says. “Knowing the obstacles that I had to overcome and knowing the opportunities that my direct ancestors didn’t have; I really want to be in a space where I can push for people.”

This means that he encourages conversations relating to diversity, equity, and social justice, Holston says. Every Sunday, Lauder hosts a discussion forum called “What Matters,” where a faculty member leads conversation topics ranging from free speech to presidential elections.

mitchell holston during move in

Cam Gray , the House’s faculty director, leads a walking history program called “Stroll With Me,” where students tour different parts of the city, including University City and the Gayborhood. Holston also takes students on field trips. Past excursions have included the Museum of the American Revolution and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

Holston also encourages students to understand how they fit into a broader world. He wants students to understand that they’re a citizen of a College House, a part of Penn, and a resident of Philadelphia, he says. “What does it mean to be a part of that? And then once you graduate and leave from here, how are you going to take what you learned not only here at Lauder, but here at Penn, to create a better world wherever you’re going?”

At Lauder, “our main focus is helping students understand how to situate [themselves] in the world and how they can change it,” and his role is to facilitate this, Holston says. “Knowing that they’re benefiting from what I’m doing, even if they don’t know it, it’s something that’s gratifying for me.”

Lauder College House Location: 3335 Woodland Walk Opened in: 2016 Number of residents: 342 Motto: “ Semper ad meliora ,” meaning “always toward better things” Special features: Reading room, in-house dining café, dining pavilion, private courtyard, common living room, media room, seminar rooms, fitness room, meditation room, music practice rooms, common kitchens, laundry room

Kathryn McDonald Gutmann College House

Kathryn McDonald has been working in residential life for more than 20 years. “The thing that gets me excited is the relationships,” she says. “I love programming, being creative, having an opportunity to have students sit with me while we have tea. Seeing what those students do, particularly at a place like Penn, it’s always so amazing.”

kathryn mcdonald in gutmann college house

McDonald can often be found in the community kitchen of Gutmann College House , putting the kettle on, or whipping up a batch of cookies. “I try to incorporate myself in the programming,” McDonald says. “If I’m gonna watch Game 1 of the World Series and I’m excited about it, I want people to share that with me and I want the House to share it with me. It feels more fulfilling that way.” After all, the Gutmann House motto is, “Opportunity is invented together.”

The newest of the dormitories, Gutmann opened to students in 2021. It has a distinctive red brick horseshoe shape giving way to a sunny interior which, if McDonald has her way, will soon be filled with plants. She’s curating a collection in her office, one in a common area, and one in her apartment, which she shares with a cat named Kathryn, Jr. and a guinea pig named Templeton, after the gluttonous rat in “Charlotte’s Web.”

kathryn in the kitchen baking cookies for new students

McDonald heard animal shelters had a post-pandemic influx of small animals, which people purchased during the shutdown only to realize that they did not, in fact, want a small animal. McDonald thought she might, visited a shelter, and ended up with a new pet. “So basically, I’m a sucker, long story short,” she says.

Her partner, who never lived in a dorm during his college years, also lives part-time in the apartment. “He loves the cafeteria,” McDonald says. “That’s like an exciting morning for us. If he has the day off, we’ll go to the cafeteria for breakfast. And he’s like, just in hog heaven. He loves the waffle iron situation.”

McDonald maintains a work life balance in part through permeability and authenticity. She engages students through activities she enjoys—hosting a Superbowl party and a regular crochet craft series (“Scarf & Scarf”). McDonald says, “What I learned is that bringing myself to the role makes it better.”

Gutmann College House Location: 211 South 40th St. Opened in: 2021 Number of residents by year: 436 Motto: “Opportunity is invented together.” Special features: Quaker Kitchen, multipurpose room, coffee bar, campus green, common living room, tinker space, seminar rooms, fitness room, meditation room, music practice rooms, club rooms with kitchen, laundry room

A Place to Belong: University Housing Shapes Community-Building at Penn

Forming a new gateway on the eastern edge of campus, Lauder College House embraces public and private outdoor spaces while maintaining secure access for residents. The 198,000 GSF building includes residences for 350 students, as well as apartments for faculty, staff, and graduate students, arranged around light-filled, double-height common areas.

Public pathways draw the surrounding community in to the “Lifted Lawn” at the heart of the project, a prominent new green space in the city. Residents enter Lauder College House through a gateway pavilion that leads into a sheltered open-air courtyard. Spaces for dining, seminars, relaxing, studying, and administrative use are organized around this social heart, encouraging all who enter to engage in the life of the building. Strategies for occupant wellbeing, energy efficiency, and stormwater mitigation helped the project achieve LEED Silver certification.

Lauder College House weaves city and campus together through building massing, materials, neighborhood-friendly outdoor spaces, and welcoming landscape. The exterior integrates with Penn’s architectural legacy while still being a building of its time, with a humane approach to the façade that gives residents a sense of where they live in the scope of the block-long College House. Undulating, staggered brick walls enliven the streetscape and capture a dynamic display of light and shadow.

Our Room Rate Philosophy

In Fall 2016, Residential Services worked with campus partners to create a new room rate structure. Moving from six room rates to two, the change was designed to increase housing equity and access and brings 100% of first-year rooms within the student aid allotment for housing. For the 2023-2024 academic year, 77.3% rooms are at the lower room rate.

The current student aid allotment rate is applied to all traditional singles, doubles and triples, suites and apartments without full kitchens and apartments with any “shared” bedrooms.  All apartment style units with private bedrooms, kitchens and baths are offered at a higher rate.

Residential Services continues to work with campus partners to review room rates. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. BREAKING | Poll: Election interest hits new low in tight Biden-Trump race

Columbia University president grilled about campus antisemitism at congressional hearing

Columbia University’s president strongly denounced antisemitism during a congressional hearing Wednesday, saying that after Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, “the world changed, and so did my focus.”

“Antisemitism has no place on our campus, and I am personally committed to doing everything I can to confront it directly,” President Nemat “Minouche” Shafik told the Republican-led House Committee on Education and the Workforce. “Israel was brutally attacked by Hamas terrorists and very soon it became clear that these horrific events would ignite fear and anguish across our campus.”

Shafik faced questions about her handling of antisemitism on campus after the Oct. 7 attack alongside two members of Columbia's Board of Trustees and the head of the university's antisemitism task force. She faced particular scrutiny for how the university handled faculty members who made comments about Hamas that were perceived as antisemitic.

Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., grilled Shafik about Joseph Massad, a tenured professor in Columbia’s Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies department who published comments in October calling Hamas' attack a “ stunning victory .”

“I do condemn his statement. I am appalled by what he said,” Shafik responded. “He has been spoken to.”

The hearing became particularly heated when Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., pressed Shafik about why Massad is still listed on Columbia’s website as the chair of the academic review committee.

Stefanik asked Shafik for her commitment that Massad would be removed as chair, and Shafik said she would get back to her.

Stefanik also questioned Shafik about Mohamed Abdou, a visiting professor at the Middle East Institute at Columbia. She referred to an Oct. 11 post on Facebook in which Abdou wrote, “Yes, I’m with the muqawamah (the resistance) be it Hamas and Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad but up to a point.”

When asked about consequences, Shafik said Abdou “will never work at Columbia again.”

 Nemat Shafik

Her appearance in Congress came after she declined to testify at a hearing in December, citing scheduling conflicts.

That hearing included testimonies from the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who all drew intense scrutiny for their responses to questions regarding antisemitism and hate speech on campus. Penn and Harvard 's presidents have since resigned.

When Shafik and her colleagues were asked by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., whether calling for the genocide of Jewish people violates Columbia’s rules — the same question posed to Harvard, MIT and Penn’s presidents — all answered “yes.” Bonamici also asked Shafik about the chants “by any means necessary” and “intifada,” which Shafik said were distressing.

Noa Fay, a Jewish student at Columbia who attended the hearing, told NBC News that she was "underwhelmed" by Shafik's testimony. Fay added that last semester it was “nearly impossible for me to get through academically and mentally” because of antisemitism she said she experienced on campus.

“I’m an RA, and last semester, all my bulletin boards that I post up in our halls were vandalized, written with ‘stop supporting genocide, cease-fire, free Palestine, from the river to the sea,’ all of these things,” Fay said. “It has consumed every aspect of our student life.”

Ahead of her hearing, Shafik published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal about what she planned to say in her testimony to Congress.

"Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, I have spent the most of my time addressing its aftershocks," Shafik wrote. "It is hard to describe how difficult this has been, especially on a large, diverse urban campus with students from all over the world and a long tradition of political activism."

Columbia is being sued by five Jewish students and two student organizations after it suspended the student groups Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace in November. In March, Shafik confirmed that a "number" of Columbia students were suspended after allegedly participating in an unauthorized panel called "Resistance 101" that featured speakers who supported Hamas.
