Lake Garda for wine lovers

  • Wineries to visit

Writers have sung the praises of Lake Garda’s beauty for centuries, including D.H. Lawrence, who shared his encounters in Twilight in Italy: ‘The lake lies dim and milky, the mountains are dark blue at the back, while over them the sky gushes and glistens with light.’

Lake Garda’s charming character is inescapable by its medieval castles, quaint lakeside villages, and crystal blue waters. Surrounded by three regions – Veneto’s rolling hills, Trentino-Alto Adige’s alpine mountains, and the fertile plains of Lombardy – Lake Garda is also the northernmost Mediterranean climate in Europe, where the sun-soaked area is tempered with predictable afternoon breezes.

The landscape is verdant with lemon and olive groves, and vineyards that provide quaffable enjoyment made from grapes that are grown on morainic soils left from the glaciers that carved the lake millions of years ago.

Lake Garda’s wines

The vineyards of Lake Garda offer some of the country’s most classic wines: Bardolino , the area’s famous light red wine, as well as light and refreshing Chiaretto rosatos; Lugana DOC straddles both Lombardy and Veneto on the southern shore of the lake, producing wines made mostly with Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana), a biotype of Verdicchio.

The easy-drinking white Custoza is typically blended from nine allowable grapes, among them Garganega, Fernanda (Cortese) and Trebbiano di Toscano. On the western shores, Valtenesi is driven by the indigenous Groppello grape(s).

International varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also found along the lake region as they have taken fertile residence for centuries.

The sparkling wines of Garda DOC are made using either metodo classico and/or Martinotti methods, offering refreshing and clean bubbles that pair effortlessly with the lake’s conviviality and Mediterranean climate.

Garda wineries to visit

Azienda agricola pratello.

The 1860s farm is run by the Bertola family and is located one kilometre from the lake along the southwestern shores in Padenghe. Pratello primarily produces Lugana, and Valtenesi, Chiaretto di Valtenesi, as well as a metodo classico Garda DOC which spends five years on lees. Pratello is also an agriturismo, where most of the gastronomic experiences, including their extra virgin olive oil, come from the farm and nearby producers. Alpacas, chickens, donkeys and ducks live among the meadows and olive groves. Accommodation is charming and comfortable, with amenities that include dining, swimming, and a natural pond for soaking into deeper bliss.

Azienda Agricola Ricchi

In the scenic landscape of the morainic hills, just south of Lake Garda in Monzambano, family-run Ricchi invites guests to taste a host of wines, ranging from Garda DOC Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as Lugana, international red blends made from partially raisinated grapes, sparkling wines and grappa. Ricchi also produces olive oil made from the hills of the Mantua region.

Azienda Agricola Cavalchina

Cavalchina pioneered the use of the name ‘Custoza’ in the early 1960s for the white wine grown in Custoza. Arrange a tasting visit to Cavalchina’s second story tasting room that overlooks the picturesque vineyards where Garganega, Fernanda and other varieties grow. In addition to Custoza, owners and brothers Luciano and Franco Piona also produce a number of wines from the lake region, including Bardolino, Chiaretto and the sparkling Cuvée Maison, a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Corvina. This metodo classico Garda DOC enjoys 12 months on lees to produce a creamy, dry, herbal spumante with a touch of refreshing salinity.

Costaripa is a family-run winery located in western shores of the lake in Valtenesi owned by winemaker Mattia Vezzola, who is passionate about maximising the potential of indigenous grapes such as Groppello and Marzemino. A visit to the tasting room allows guests to taste award-winning Valtenesi wines, including the wildly popular RosaMara Chiaretto made using the ‘tear drop’ method, as well as Lugana and metodo classico Garda DOC.

Perla del Garda

Owned by the Prandini family, Perla del Garda strives to blend innovation and tradition with an eye on sustainability on the production of their wines coming from 34 hectares just south of Garda Lake, between Desenzano and Sirmione. They produce metodo classico Garda DOC made of Chardonnay and also the Millesimato Extra Brut, which is kept on the lees for at least 60 months. Tasting tours highlight Lugana wines, and include walks through vineyards to vertical tastings to appreciate the ageing capacity of this wine.

Originally a farm specialising in producing vine cuttings, the Zenato family now also operates over 30 hectares in the Lugana DOC production area in the quaint town of Peschiera del Garda. Tended by third-generation brothers Fabio and Paolo, they are passionate about their territory, always ensuring to protect the environment. Along with Lugana wines, Le Morette produces Bardolino, Chiaretto, sparkling wines, as well as passito, grappa, olive oil and honey.

20120923-180941.jpg

Valpolicella DOC and Ripasso

Moslty made with the corvina grapes, Valpolicella DOC are the signature wines of the area. Less structured than the other wines, it is the perfect accompaniment for every day dishes such as pasta. Its freshness and light body will please many wine drinker for its simplicity and frankness. In the case of Ripasso the fermenting grape must is poured over the skins of the Amarone. This step gives more colour and structure to the wine, and it is a perfect match for meats, aged cheeses and salami.

Recioto is a sweeter wine and it is perfect with desserts and it is obtained from the same process of Amaronek, however the fermentation is stopped to have a lower content of alcohol and therefore more sugars in the wine.

Best Amarone Wineries Wine Tours From Verona.

If you find yourself staying or visiting the city of Verona and the surrounding towns, there’s more awaiting for your than your textbook museums, stunning architecture and works of art. While it’s a beautiful city with a long and interesting history, Verona also has a lot more to offer in the way of immersive experiences that can be done during your stay. As always, don’t forget to check online which foods and local dishes you must try while in Verona, and be ready to hit the restaurants and food parlors you might find. But there’s something else that might tickle your fancy, and it’s the world of wine. Wine lovers everywhere should definitely stop by the local wineries to taste and sample the staple of the region, the unique Amarone wine, but for its taste and composition, this traditional alcoholic beverage might be an interesting choice even for those who are not yet familiar with wine-tasting experiences.

If you’ve never tried tasting wine in a professional environment, such as the winery where the product is developed and bottled, the Amarone wine is a fascinating starting point and you will have the chance to sample different kinds of Amarone that are obtained from a variety of grapes (and dry grapes, which give it a sort of raisin-type flavor) and with specific methods (such as a different fermentation or mixing different grape musts) that make for a unique experience. You will find many Amarone wineries around Verona and in the surrounding region of the Valpolicella, and here are some of the establishments that have a proud and long history of Amarone production.

Cantine Bertani Wine Tour.

The traditional techniques employed for the production of the Amarone here at the Cantine Bertani date back to 1857 and the wine is obtained from locally sourced grapes, cultivated in the winery’s 200 hectares of vineyards located at the heart of the Valpolicella region. The winery is near Verona, so it’s very easy to hop by to enjoy a tour of the grounds and wine tasting experiences that will accompany you through the history of the Bertani, their knowledge and the wide selection of different types of Amarone. If you want to grab a bottle as a souvenir, or to enjoy during the rest of your stay in Italy, the winery also has a shop, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 19:00. The shop is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00.

Cantina Zeni Bardolino Wine Tour.

Located on the Lake of Garda, in the city of Bardolino, near Verona, the Cantina Zeni offers tours for individual tourists or small groups up to 10 people, booking isn’t required but different tasting experiences can be booked beforehand if you’re interested in a more in-depth visit of the winery. Another great activity you can take part to while at the Cantina Zeni is a visit to their Wine Museum: you will get a closer look to each step of wine production, from the vineyard to the bottle, and you’ll learn about the tools of the trade. On the winery’s website you’ll find contact information and more info on booking, opening times and the Cantina’s shop http://www.zeni.it/en/contacts/.

The Cà dei Frati winery follows a family tradition that focuses its attention on carefully growing and harvesting the individual strains of grape, in order to achieve wines of the highest quality - from the raw ingredients to the finished product. The winery also has affiliated establishments where one can enjoy food and wine through tastings and culinary events, at hotels and restaurants along the Lake of Garda.

Villa Monteleone Valpolicella Amarone Tour.

Not far from Verona, this winery can also be counted among the producers of top-quality Amarone. The region of Valpolicella, where the Villa Monteleone winery is located along with others, is recognized as the official territory of production for the Amarone, starting from the grapes that are harvested here. This winery differs from others because of the adjoined Bed & Breakfast that will welcome guests from all over the world, who have arrived to sample the local wines and dishes, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients and following traditional, regional recipes. The winery offers wine and culinary tours, for a complete journey into the dining habits of the locals of this region.

Bardolino wine tour-Garda Lake view

from 90 Eur per person

Bardolino wine originates in the hills of the eastern shore of Lake Garda. Its boundaries are defined by natural elements: Monte Baldo to the north, the shores of the lake to the east and the Adige river to the west. Only the few metres of the Adige river separates the Bardolino DOC from the Valpolicella DOC. However, the diversity of climate and geology of the two areas creates very different terroirs. That’s why Bardolino and Valpolicella are completely different wines even if both uses the same grapes.

The vast mass of water in the lake, colder than the air in summer and warmer in winter, mitigates both the summer heat and the rigours of winter. As a result, Lake Garda climate is exceptionally mild and temperate , a sort of Mediterranean bubble. In fact here, together with the typical crops of the vine and olive trees, grow cedars, lemons, palms, agaves and myrtle.

Soil is very complex. It is formed by deposits of stones, silt, gravel and sand accumulated during 4 glaciations that have affected Lake Garda and Europe since a million years ago. The thrust of the glaciers, digging the soil and dragging accumulations of debris has left the moraines, concentric and circular weirs. Today these piles of debris shape the hills surrounding the Lake, forming a sort of natural amphitheatre.

From this terroir come light, fresh and easy drinking wines. Book your Bardolino wine tour to discover this region with a private wine guide!

The Bardolino blend is mainly based on Corvina Veronese , which can make up to 95% of the blend and with at least 5% Rondinella . Other black grape varieties are allowed in small quantities, among which Molinara is very common, with pinkish berries and known as “salted grapes” for its particular balance that does not push neither on acidity nor tannins, bringing out the flavor.

Bardolino Wine tour-lazy cats

The most common type is the “base” one, Bardolino DOC . It is a light red wine, with fruity aromas of cherry, strawberry and pomegranate and hints of spices such as cinnamon and clove. Not infrequently it is served slightly chill in summer to enhance the natural acidity and combined with lake fish. In the Superiore DOCG version it is aged at least one year before sale. As a result it gains more body and structure. The addition of the words “ Classico ” on the label can be found if the grapes come from the historical part of the DOC.

The wine that is experiencing a great success is the Chiaretto , the rosé version of Bardolino. Chiaretto is obtained with the “vinification in pink” of the grapes. This means a short maceration of the skins which release only a small part of the coloring substances and tannins to the must. Its bright pink colour is reminiscent of peach blossom. While at the nose shows notes of wild flowers and berries and thanks to its marked freshness and sapidity it is an excellent aperitif wine. It is produced in still and sparkling wine version.

Bardolino Novello is another type of Bardolino, obtained by the carbonic maceration process. The whole bunches are placed in airtight steel containers that are saturated with carbon dioxide. In these conditions the fermentation takes place inside the grapes (intracellular). After 2 weeks, the grapes are crushed and started to normal alcoholic fermentation. The whole process is very fast and the wine is drunk young, traditionally in autumn with roasted chestnuts.

The Garda olive oil

Olio del Garda DOP is another important product of the hills of Lake Garda In fact in the higher slopes, the vines gives way to the olive tree groves. The traditional olive varieties are Casaliva , Gargnà and Favarol. But in recent years have been also added varieties from Tuscany such as Leccino. The Garda oil has a greenish-yellow colour due to the presence of chlorophyll and is distinguished by its delicate and soft taste due to its low acidity.

On the Bardolino wine tour you can combine a visit to one or more wineries with a visit to an oil mill to taste both local wine and oil.

LAKE GARDA WINE & VINEYARDS A centuries-old tradition

In addition to the beautiful landscapes and points of historical interest, Lake Garda is also renowned throughout the world for its vineyards . The wine tradition has its roots in the Bronze Age, and was praised by the Latin poet Catullus, the barbarian king Theodate, and the marquise Isabella d’Este.

Thanks to the proximity of the lake, the temperate climate and the particular composition of the soil, here you can find truly unique wines , from the famous Lugana to lesser-known delicacies, such as Bianco di Custoza.

All these wines are recognized as DOC , an acronym which stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata (“controlled designation of origin”): this implies that the origin of the grapes is always certified and that the production of that wine must follow a precise disciplinary imposed by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The vineyards are an integral part of the history and landscape of Lake Garda: come with us to discover the authentic taste and scents of this fascinating territory !

Wine in western Lake Garda

Riviera del garda classico doc.

66-1 (1)

Riviera del Garda Classico , which until a few years ago was called only “Garda Classico”, is a family of wines produced in a vast area that runs along the entire western shore of Lake Garda (i.e. the Brescia shore, from Limone to Sirmione ).

Due the vastness of the territory of production, under the name Riviera del Garda Classico DOC are different wines:

  • Riviera del Garda Classico Bianco (white wine)
  • Riviera del Garda Classico Rosso (red wine)
  • Riviera del Garda Classico Rosso Superiore (superior red wine)
  • Riviera del Garda Classico Groppello (red wine)
  • Riviera del Garda Classico Chiaretto (rosé wine)
  • Riviera del Garda Classico Rosé (rosé sparkling wine)

Valtenesi DOC

16 (9)

The territory of Valtenesi is located within that of the Riviera del Garda Classico, but since 2012 is a DOC in its own right.

This family includes two types of wine, Valtenesi and Valtenesi Chiaretto , both produced from the Groppello grape variety, native to the area. These are red wines with a alcohol content of about 11.5° .

In this area there are many farms with a long tradition behind them, such as Azienda Agricola Bottarelli , which produces wine and oil since 1937 .

Wine in southern Lake Garda

Lugana-cinque-vini (1)

Lugana is a group of white wines produced in the southern part of Lake Garda (particularly in the municipalities of Lonato, Desenzano , Sirmione , Pozzolengo and Peschiera del Garda), from grapes of the “Turbiana” vine .

The colour tends to be straw yellow , but can also turn towards golden, and the alcohol content is about 11° . The perfume and taste depend on the individual wine: in fact, within the Lugana family there are Lugana, Lugana Superiore, Lugana Riserva, Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva and Lugana Spumante , each with different organoleptic characteristics.

Here, too, there are numerous family-run farms that carry on a tradition handed down from generation to generation , such as Perla del Garda .

Custoza DOC

14763741526_79f37b2475_c (1)

Custoza is a white wine , which takes its name from a small hamlet in the municipality of Sommacampagna (in the province of Verona) and is produced in a handful of surrounding municipalities.

This wine is produced with a mix of different grapes , which give it a fresh and fragrant flavor, and has a alcohol content of about 11° .

In addition to the traditional Custoza DOC , you can also find the Custoza Riserva , Custoza Spumante and Custoza Passito .

Wine in eastern Lake Garda

Bardolino doc.

36154163915_9446496b87_c (1)

Bardolino is another very famous wine from the Lake Garda area, and is produced in the municipality of the same name (on the eastern shore of the lake) and in the surrounding areas, such as Lazise , Castelnuovo, Torri del Benaco and Peschiera.

This is a red wine with a brilliant colour, a fruity bouquet and a dry, soft flavour and a alcohol content of about 10,5° . In addition to the “classic” Bardolino, this area also produces Bardolino Chiaretto , a rosé wine typical of Lake Garda (it is also produced on the western shore).

Valpolicella DOC

36364400161_f43dac9a4a_c (1)

Valpolicella is a famous red wine that is not produced directly on the shores of Lake Garda, but on the hills of Verona (east of the lake). It is a wine with a long tradition, which dates back even to the Roman era, and still highly appreciated throughout the world.

This wine is present in the variants Valpolicella Superiore , Valpolicella Ripasso and sometimes as Valpolicella Valpantena , if it is produced in this specific part of the vast production area. The alcohol content depends on the type of wine, and goes from 11° to 14° .

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG

2983113293_8ac786b455_c (1)

Although produced with Valpolicella grapes,  Amarone della Valpolicella is a denomination in itself, since it follows its own specific regulations.

This is perhaps the most famous wine of this area, a red wine with a full, warm and velvety flavor , with a alcohol content of about 14° .

WINE FESTIVALS on Lake Garda

Since wine is one of the most important products, there are many festivals that celebrate it in all its forms. Here are the most important ones:

  • Festa del Vino in Polpenazze (Brescia): for seventy years takes place in the last weekend of May and is dedicated to the wines of Valtenesi and Riviera del Garda.
  • Italia in Rosa in Moniga (Brescia), during the first weekend of June , is dedicated to rosé wine and especially to Chiaretto, the most important local rosé wine.
  • Profumi di Mosto in Puegnago (Brescia) is dedicated to Groppello, the autochthonous vine used for many local wines, and takes place on the first sunday of October .
  • Festa dell’Uva e del Vino in Bardolino (Verona) for ninety years celebrates the homonymous wine, and takes place during the first week of October .

Moscow City Ballet celebrates the classical Russian tradition in spectacular style. Swan Lake is a signature piece of their repertoire. The choreography, interpretation and stand-out virtuoso performances win consistently rave reviews. The epic story of Prince Siegfried and his doomed love for Odette, Queen of the Swans, is magnificently brought to life in all its original splendour by Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly familiar score. Tchaikovsky is the undisputed Tsar of ballet; his sweeping scores have the power to transport audiences from delight to despair, especially when performed by a full orchestra. The new generation of principal dancers adds a a youthful exuberance to these renowned ballets.

Part of the Tchaikovsky Trilogy , alongside Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker .

If a customer purchases tickets to more than one production (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker) at the same time at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre box office or via the Groups Booking line (01-677-7770 Mon-Fri; 9am-5.30pm), the following discounts apply:

Two different titled performances: €5 off each ticket. Three different titled performances: €10 off each ticket.
