Virginia news | university of virginia expels 1 fraternity and suspends 3 others over hazing concerns.

virginia university visit

CHARLOTTESVILLE (AP) — Concerns about hazing have prompted the University of Virginia to terminate one local fraternity and suspend three others on its Charlottesville campus, the school said Wednesday.

The university said in a statement that the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter had “engaged in serious hazing behavior .” The school said it decided to terminate its fraternal organization agreement following an investigation.

Disciplinary action also has been initiated against individual students for their alleged involvement in hazing, the university said.

The school did not elaborate on the allegations or the findings against the chapter. It said details will be posted in the coming weeks on a university webpage that publishes reports of hazing misconduct.

Pi Kappa Alpha did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment. The Daily Progress and other news outlets reported that Justin Buck, executive vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha national, confirmed the chapter was expelled for a minimum of four years.

Buck said the fraternity members there were an “embarrassment” and that they “sullied and degraded” the organization’s good name, The Daily Progress reported.

“This action was taken following the confirmed abhorrent and detestable hazing activities by individuals,” Buck said.

Theta Chi said in a statement that its staff members have been in contact with university administrators and chapter leadership and are gathering facts.

“Theta Chi does not tolerate hazing as it runs directly contrary to its mission of developing Resolute Men and has no place within the fraternity experience,” the organization said in a statement.

The national organizations for the other chapters did not respond to emails seeking comment.

“The university does not tolerate hazing activity,” the school said, “and we act quickly to investigate and pursue necessary disciplinary action when reports are made.”

Virginia to Host Northern Illinois Transfer Xavier Amos for Official Visit

  • Author: Matt Newton

Virginia's busy April on the recruiting trail continues. The Cavaliers have scheduled a third transfer visitor and one that could be an ideal fit at a critical position of need. Northern Illinois transfer forward Xavier Amos will reportedly take an official visit to Virginia this upcoming Friday (April 26). Amos will be the third transfer portal target to visit UVA this offseason, joining Saint Mary's forward Joshua Jefferson , who visited April 12-14, and Illinois-Chicago wing Toby Okani , who is set to visit the Cavaliers on Tuesday, April 23.

Update: Xavier Amos will be Virginia's fourth transfer portal visitor of the offseason, as the Cavaliers are also hosting Saint Mary's transfer guard Aidan Mahaney on Tuesday.

Northern Illinois transfer Xavier Amos tells @On3sports he will visit Virginia on Friday. The 6-8 sophomore averaged 13.8 points, 1.3 blocks, and shot 38.5% 3P this season. https://t.co/OmVT1pG84C https://t.co/wjDcq5Ynas pic.twitter.com/v5rY4kz2qT — Jamie Shaw (@JamieShaw5) April 22, 2024

A 6'8", 215-pound forward from Chicago, Illinois, Amos started 25 games as a sophomore in 2023-2024, averaging 13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 1.2 assists, and 0.8 steals per game in a little over 30 minutes per contest. Tony Bennett will naturally be interested in Amos as a plus defender, but he is also an offensive asset who can score at all three levels and stretch the floor by shooting 38.5% from three, which would have made him Virginia's fourth-best three-point shooter last season. His best game came against a major conference team that made the NCAA Tournament, scoring 26 points on 11/15 shooting and 4/5 from three-point range on the road at Northwestern.

Amos entered the transfer portal at the end of the season with two years of eligibility remaining. Virginia was among the first of an sizable list of major conference programs to reach out to Amos, a group that included Kansas, Texas, Illinois, Xavier, and Cal.

Xavier has a professional style of play. It’s precise, instinctive, fluid, and controlled. He’s mastered all three levels of scoring within the system and confinement of the college game. He will be a nightmare at the pro level with his skill set. #Yoda pic.twitter.com/bqqq1mHW0N — Rashad Phillips (@RP3natural) April 4, 2024

Not only is Amos an extremely valuable player on his own, but his fit would be ideal to address a particular need on Virginia's roster for next season. The Cavaliers are losing both of their main power forwards from a season ago in Ryan Dunn and Jake Groves, leaving incoming freshman Jacob Cofie as the only power forward on next year's roster. With his ability to serve as a versatile defender and rim protector on the defensive end and his ability to score at all three levels on the offensive end, Amos would be a home run addition for the Cavaliers if Tony Bennett and company can reel him in next weekend.

The timing of the scheduling of this visit should be noted as well. Virginia had its eyes on another forward in the transfer portal: Joshua Jefferson from Saint Mary's, who visited two weekends ago. Jefferson took a couple of additional visits after his trip to Charlottesville and is now being projected to commit to Iowa State per On3 . If Jefferson is off the board, it makes even more sense that the Cavaliers are now aggressively pursuing another forward who might be an even better fit.

Virginia currently has four open scholarships for the 2024-2025 season.

ODU Receives $200,000 from SCHEV to Alleviate Financial Barriers of Internships and for Research

Woman speaking at podium

By Kenya Godette

The Old Dominion University  Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office  was awarded $200,000 in grant funding from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to supplement associated costs of unpaid internships and to enhance research on student internship experiences.

Funding was awarded in two $100,000 grants from the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) in collaboration with the Virginia Chamber Foundation. This partnership aims to connect Virginia businesses offering work-based learning opportunities with students, signifying a concerted effort to stimulate partnerships between public universities and commercial organizations.

“These grants represent a significant investment in the future workforce of Virginia,” said Barbara Blake, executive director for the Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office. “This $200,000, in addition to the  recently awarded $5 million Mellon Foundation grant  that provides internship support to humanities majors, underscores our unwavering commitment to advance work-based learning statewide.”

The first award is a $100,000 Institutional Award for Student Internship Support Grant. Funds will be used to address financial obstacles that students encounter when participating in internships by providing stipends for unpaid opportunities, transportation costs, professional attire, housing and necessary materials for internship preparation.

Students can apply for Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 internship support in May.

The second $100,000 award is from the Institutional Internship Data Collection Grant, a statewide initiative that assists higher education institutions in collecting, compiling and reporting data on student internship experiences. With this funding, the office will incentivize students to enroll in zero-credit, tuition-free courses that allow the University to track student internship experiences.

“There are many students at the University who engage in great internships but, unfortunately, ODU may not know about their work,” Blake said. “Some students don’t need a credit bearing course to complete their major, so there is no reason for them to report their internship experiences to us—hindering our ability to collect data.”

This grant will also provide an incentive to students who participate in data collection events and programs that the internship office will offer.

Through the strategic utilization of these grants, the Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality internship opportunities for all ODU students, regardless of their financial circumstances.

For more information about the Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office and its initiatives, please visit  www.odu.edu/internship  or contact 757-683-JOBS or email [email protected] .

Enhance your college career by gaining relevant experience with the skills and knowledge needed for your future career. Discover our experiential learning opportunities.

Frances Keene, vice president of student affairs and chair of the search committee, invites members of the campus community to meet the candidates in person or via Zoom during the forums. Links for the open forums will be posted on the senior search website on the morning of each forum.
