Do you need travel insurance to visit Barcelona?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance.

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

As a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Most Instagrammable buildings in Barcelona

Sagrada familia – from the outside.

Spoiler alert; there will be a lot of Gaudí artworks in this roundup. Gaudí was a genius who left a strong architectural influence in Barcelona, the most famous amongst these being the Sagrada Familia.

The Sagrada Familia is a large Catholic Church, currently unfinished.

It is very imposing so if you want to snap a picture with the whole building make sure to take it from the small park in front of the facade of Sagrada Familia, as you’ll be able to get the whole building in one shot.

Get the exact location here .

Sagrada Familia – from the inside

As you can imagine a master piece like the Sagrada Familia is pretty beautiful also on the inside, and can’t be seen just from the outside. In terms of photo opportunities, the interior doesn’t disappoint either.

One of my favourite things about Barcelona is that the weather is pleasant all year (which is what makes it one of the best cities to visit in Europe in winter! ) meaning you can get great photos both indoors and outdoors at any time of year.

The famous facade of Casa Battló in Barcelona, Spain

The famous facade of Casa Battló in Barcelona, Spain

Casa Battlò – from the outside

As promised, here is another Gaudí you have to add to your list of Instagrammable locations in Barcelona.

The facade of Casa Battlò is in my opinion on of its most stunning features, with the colourful tiles and undulated balconies.

The building is tall and imposing however, so you won’t be able to snap good photos of it from below it, as it won’t all fit in the frame.

For a more photogenic Instagrammable shot, head over across the street so that you can fit the whole building in. Bonus points if you hang off the metal framing of the bench located there.

Unless you’re visiting very early in the morning the traffic will be quite mental, so prepared to wait a while for the perfect moment without cars.

Casa Battlò – from the inside

If the exterior of Casa Battlò is stunning, the interior isn’t far behind it.

The recurring theme of nature in its architecture makes Casa Battlò one of the most visited attractions in Barcelona, and one of the most Instagrammable.

With its colourful mosaic windows and the undulated architecture on the rooftop there are plenty of good photo opportunities inside the house.

Casa Battlò isn’t just a great photo spot. It’s also one of the top attractions and best things to do in Barcelona , which features on pretty much all the Spain bucket lists.

Book your ticket to Casa Battlò here!

Barcelona Cathedral – from outside

The Barcelona Cathedral is one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in Europe, and the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona.

With an imposing artwork like Sagrada Familia just around the corner the Barcelona Cathedral often goes unnoticed, but make sure to pay it a visit if you want to visit a beautiful Gothic cathedral and snap some excellent Instagram shots.

Early morning in front of the Barcelona Cathedral

Barcelona Cathedral – from the rooftop

I imagine you might be getting bored of my photo from the outside and photo from the inside approach, so to spice things a little when it comes to the Barcelona Cathedral I actually recommend snapping photos outside or from the rooftop.

While the inside is beautiful it is very similar to other Gothic cathedrals around, whilst the view of the rooftops of Barcelona is unique.

Access to the inside and rooftop of Barcelona Cathedral is free in the morning up until 1pm, except for Sundays.

If you’re travelling to Barcelona during weekdays save yourself some money and visit the Barcelona Cathedral in the morning, so you can snap this Instgrammable shot from its rooftop!

Palau de la Música Catalana

If you love colourful interior decor you will love the Palau de la Musica Catalana; a famous concert hall designed in the Catalan modernist style and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the day when there are no musical performances taking place it is possible to visit this beautiful building.

With its detailed interior decorations and the colourful mosaic columns on the outside balcony, both the concert hall and other spots in the Palau make for excellent Instagram shots.

See the exact location here .

Hospital de Sant Pau

When it comes to Instagrammable buildings in Barcelona, the Hospital de Sant Pau has to feature on the list.

Together with the Palau de la Musica Catalana it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was designed in the Catalan modernism style.

Before you say it, yes taking photo for the ‘gram outside a hospital is a bit weird.

Don’t worry though, Hospital de Sant Pau is no longer a hospital and hasn’t been since 2009, when it was renovated for use as museum and cultural centre.

So you can snap some Instagram worthy shots of its beautiful architecture, then go inside and learn about Catalan history.

Most Instagram worthy parks in Barcelona

Bunkers del carmel.

Bunkers del Carmel is one of my new favourite locations in Barcelona, and not just for taking Instagrammable photos.

Bunkers del Carmel is a park a short metro journey out of the centre of Barcelona, once you reach the metro station (El Carmel or Alfons X, depending on where you’re coming from) you can either bus it up the hill or walk if you’re feeling sporty.

Once you get to the top there are epic 360 degrees views over Barcelona, and you will find a lot of the locals having picnics enjoying the nice weather and view.

While all the view is Instagram-worthy, there is one specific spot that is extremely Instagrammable, if you feel confident enough to climb over a railing to reach it!

Check out the exact location here .

Park Güell

Park Güell is the last Gaudí artwork on this list. Exploring Gaudí’s stunning architecture is a highlight on every Spain bucket list .

The famous park is a short metro ride outside of central Barcelona, and with its intriguing architecture and view over the rooftops of Barcelona it is one of the most visited areas of Barcelona.

At the time when I visited (February 2018) the park was undergoing construction so you had to pre-book tickets and not all areas of the park were open.

If you’re visiting on a weekend and want to take pretty photos for Instagram, make sure to go early as it will get very busy very quickly.

Book your skip the line guided tour of Park Güell here .

Park de Montjuic

Park de Montjuic differs from the first two parks in this list in that it is an actual park with green walking areas, unlike the two previous parks which are better known for their views or architecture.

The park has wide green gardens that you can walk around, with a number of important landmarks dotted here and there, such as the Olympic Stadium.

You can walk around Park Montjuic absorbing the relaxing vibes, snapping Instagrammable photos that will make your friends want to book a spring getaway.

Most Instagrammable streets in Barcelona

Carrer del bisbe, gothic quarter.

The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is a beautiful area with cool architecture and an interesting vibe for those that love wandering small backstreets.

If you want to snap an Instagrammable shot during your wanderings make sure to walk past Carrer del Bisbe.

This street is characterised by the famous Pont Gòtic, an archway that connects the two buildings on opposite sides of the street.

The street is very small so if you want to take a photo without the crowds, make sure to visit early in the morning. Or learn how to Photoshop people out, either works pretty well.

Find out the exact location of this Instagrammable bridge here .

Carrer del Dr. Joaquim Pou

Carrer del Dr. Joaquim Pou is in my opinion one of the most Instagrammable locations in Barcelona thanks to its view of the Barcelona cathedral.

The main facade of the building is hidden, with only the spikes and roofs of the the cathedral visible.

To me the natural framing given by the surrounding buildings makes it an intriguing shot, that makes people wonder what the imposing building at the end of the street is.

Which they will then find out from one of your other epic Instagram shots 😉

Passeig Maritim, Barceloneta

Barceloneta is a neighbourhood Barcelona along the sea, where locals go to surf, sunbathe and dine at the outdoors seafood restaurants. Passeig Maritim is the seaside road along which you can walk and enjoy a beach stroll.

Beaches are usually always good photo spots (if you need trip inspiration for this summer, check out these top 20 beaches you have to visit ) but Barceloneta especially makes for good photos thanks to its city location.

If you want photos that are a bit different from the usual beach and palm trees, here you’ll be able to get shots with beach and epic buildings in the background.

Walking along the beach in Barceloneta

Passeig de Sant Joan, Arc de Triomf

Everyone knows about Paris’s Arc de Triomf, but did you know Barcelona has one too?

I personally loved Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf because with its red bricks it’s very distinct and original when compared to the more traditional white arches you see around Europe.

The Arc has a wide road, Passeig de Sant Joan, on one side and a small park on the other, which make it a perfect Instagrammable location as you can snap photos of it from any angle and distance.

Take epic Instagram photos in Barcelona with this gear

Now that you know all the most places in Barcelona, I figured I should share with you what gear I use to take these Instagram-worthy photos.

Most of the times a phone camera is fine, but if you’re looking to step up your photography game and want to amaze all your friends back home and on social media, you might consider purchasing the following items.

Nikon D3300 : This is the camera I use to take all my photos and videos. I purchased it before I started travel blogging since it’s considered one of the best DSLRs for beginners.

It’s not the best model out there but compared to other DSLRs it’s fairly cheap and it’s quite easy to use.

You can also change lens so when you’re ready to step up your photography game you can just purchase a new lens instead of a whole new camera.

Nikon f/1.8 35mm lens : Which leads on to the second point on my list; a bokeh lens.

Bokeh is that nice soft blurred background effect that you see in professional photos, which makes the main object in the frame stand out. This type of lens allows you to get that (see below).

Manfrotto compact tripod : If you travel solo, you might want to take a tripod with you.

You can’t always trust strangers to take good photos of you so if you want to make sure the photo is framed exactly like you want it to, arm yourself with a tripod and don’t let other people put you off.

If anything, I find people are less likely to get in your photo if you have a tripod since they think you’re a professional of some sort. I like the Manfrotto compact tripod since it’s so light and easy to carry around.

Selfie stick : If you don’t quite feel comfortable enough carrying around a tripod, go for a selfie stick instead. There have become increasingly popular and it’s not weird at all to see one used in a popular tourist destination.

These are the main pieces of camera I used to take all the Instagram photos you can see in this guide, if you want to know what other gear I use to take my videos check out my full guide here .

The 17 best things to do in Barcelona in 2024

Feb 12, 2024 • 8 min read

Here are Barcelona's unmissable experiences © Jordi Salas / Getty Images

Barcelona is Spain 's most visited city, and it's not hard to see why – the historic capital of Catalonia is packed with galleries, museums, attractions and an incredible food scene.

Set between the mountains and sea, the city is celebrated for its unique architecture , thriving nightlife and urban beaches . With so many options, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Start your travel to-do list now with our guide to the best things to do in Barcelona .

1. Visit the Sagrada Família

Almost every city has at least one landmark that you simply can’t miss, and the  Sagrada Família is Barcelona’s. Antoni Gaudí’s magnificent masterpiece has been under construction for more than 130 years, and it’s still not finished.

Far from a construction site, however, the church features two grand facades studded with intricate stone carvings, towers that gleam with gem-like tiles and an interior filled with tree-like columns soaring up toward the canopy ceiling. Construction work paused during the pandemic but has resumed and the building is expected to be completed in time for the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death in 2026.

Planning tip:  The Sagrada Família is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain, and it can get  very  busy. To avoid the crowds, visit early in the morning (it opens at 9am) on a weekday.

2. See more of Gaudí’s designs

The Sagrada Família may be the most famous of Gaudí’s buildings, but all his wonderful, whimsical designs are worth visiting. The most well known are  Casa Batlló , with its iridescent dragon-like scales and skull-and-bone-effect balconies, and  La Pedrera , with its undulating stone facade and fanciful chimneys. Some of his lesser-known but equally beautiful buildings include  Casa Vicens , the first house he ever designed;  Palau Güell , which he designed for his patron Eusebi Güell; and the  Torre Bellesguard .

3. Wander through the Gothic Quarter

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter ( Barri Gòtic ) is the oldest and most atmospheric part of the city. Characterized by small alleyways, hidden plazas and historic buildings, it lies to the east of La Rambla, the famous pedestrian street that runs through the center of the old town.

The neighborhood is scattered with century-old shops, small bars and charming cafes. Some highlights include the striking Plaça Reial, fringed by cafes and palm trees; Plaça Sant Jaume, home to the grand Palau de la Generalitat; and the impressive  La Catedral .

Planning tip:  Many parts of the Gothic Quarter are known for late-night bars and clubs that are still going well into the morning. Perfect if you want to dance until dawn, but not the best neighborhood to stay in if you're traveling with young kids or those who appreciate an early night.

4. Explore Barcelona's food markets

La Boqueria might be the most famous of Barcelona’s food markets, but each neighborhood has its own, and there are several excellent ones to choose from. La Boqueria is the oldest and one of the most atmospheric, but in recent years, more stalls have given over to things such as tropical fruit shakes and novelty candy rather than traditional produce.

For a more authentic vibe, visit the modern  Mercat de Santa Caterina with its multicolored wavy roof or the grand  Mercat de Sant Antoni  with 250 stalls.

The coastline with Barcelona's beaches and a large hotel in the background

5. Soak up the sun on Barcelona's city beaches

Whatever time of year you visit Barcelona , the beaches won’t disappoint. Even in winter, it can be sunny enough to sit outside and enjoy a meal at one of the seaside restaurants, while summer offers everything from sunbathing and swimming to water sports.

The city boasts a 5km (3-mile) stretch of coastline, home to nine different beaches. There’s  Sant Sebastià with its range of upscale restaurants, Somorrostro lined with hip nightclubs and Nova Icària with a watersports center and beach volleyball.

6. Venture up Montjuïc

Montjuïc is the green hill to the south of the city, home to the Olympic Park, as well as numerous museums and gardens. Rising from Plaza d’Espanya, you'll first see the grand sets of stairs and fountains cascading down from the magnificent palace housing the  Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya . Behind that is the huge Olympic Stadium and the rest of the Olympic Park.

Planning tip:  The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya has a terrace that offers spectacular views of the city and is a popular spot to watch the sunset. The open-air bar means you can enjoy a few drinks while taking in the view.

Explore Montjuic effortlessly with  GetYourGuide . Book your tour today.

7. Snack on some tapas

When hunger pangs arrive in the afternoon or early evening, take advantage of the pre-dinner tapa. This means heading to the local favorite for a bite of anchovies, sausage, squid, wild mushrooms, roasted peppers or dozens of other tempting morsels. Wine, cava and beer all make fine accompaniments.

Planning tip: Many tapas spots are lively stand-around-the-bar affairs. When it's time for a change of scenery, barcelonins  make their way to dinner or just head to another tapas bar and skip the sit-down formality altogether.

8. Learn about an icon at the Museu Picasso

Picasso lived in Barcelona between the ages of 15 and 23, and elements of the city undoubtedly influenced his pieces, from the colorful but simply painted frescoes hanging in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya to the imaginative trencadís -style mosaics (pre-Cubist some say) of Gaudí. The Museu Picasso 's setting adds to the appeal, as do the buzzy, history-rich surrounding streets of El Born.

Explore Museu Picasso effortlessly with GetYourGuide.  Book your tour today .

9. Catch a game at Camp Nou

FC Barcelona plays a prominent role in the city's imagination. Heading to a football match at Camp Nou between September and May is the best way to catch a bit of Barcelona fever, but watching it on screen in a bar can be just as much fun, depending on the crowd.

Planning tip: Even if you can't make it to a game, the interactive Barça Stadium Tour and Museum experience takes you through the locker rooms and onto the field, hallowed ground for many Catalans.

Transform your visit to Camp Nou by  booking with GetYourGuide.

10. Experience Barcelona's famous nightlife

A night in Barcelona holds limitless possibilities. Start with sunset drinks on a rooftop terrace or sink your heels into the sand at a rustic-chic beachside xiringuito . As darkness falls, the city transforms with buzzing squares and live music, and around midnight the bars fill up.

Pick from old-school taverns, plush lounges in lamp-lit medieval chambers, sleek cocktail dens, boisterous cava bars, basements churning out brassy jazz and more. If you're still standing at 3am, hit the clubs and keep going until dawn.

Hundreds of people walk along La Rambla, the famous pedestrian street in Barcelona

11. Spend an early morning on La Rambla

Sure, the leafy 1.2km (0.75-mile) pedestrian boulevard of  La Rambla  that stretches toward the sea is the most touristed spot in town – at times, you can barely push through the crowds. But pay a visit first thing in the morning and you'll see that beyond the souvenir shops and craft sellers, it's a pure sensory overload.

Open-air cafes, fragrant flower stands and a much-overlooked mosaic by Miró dot the pavement, while key venues line both sides of the street, including the elegant Gran Teatre del Liceu , the sprawling Mercat de la Boqueria and numerous galleries. Several other barris , such as El Poblenou, have their own attractive rambles , too.

12. Enjoy Catalan cuisine

Barcelona is a great foodie city, known throughout the world for its innovative chefs and creative cuisine. While you’ll find tapas bars everywhere, be sure to sample some local Catalan dishes, too.

Before you dine, join in l’hora del vermut at a typical vermouth bar, which pairs the fortified wine with bites of pickled anchovies and olives to whet the appetite. Follow it up with traditional Catalan dishes, such as botifarra amb mongetes (sausage with white beans), suquet de peix (fish stew), escalivada (roasted red peppers, onions and eggplant) and crema catalana (similar to crème brûlée). Sample the cuisine at  Casa Delfín .

13. Celebrate during festival time

Because Barcelona has a festival almost every other month, it won’t be hard to make your trip to the city coincide with one. There are the patron-saint festivals of Santa Eulalia and La Mercé in February and September, respectively, La Diada de Sant Jordi in April (when people give each other gifts of books and roses to celebrate St George) and the fire festival of St Joan in mid-June.

Some of the main features of Catalan festivals include the castellers  (human towers), huge parading giants and correfocs , where firework-wielding devils dance through the streets.

14. See a range of works at Fundació Joan Miró

Joan Miró, the city’s best-known 20th-century native son, bequeathed this art foundation to his hometown in 1971. The light-filled buildings are crammed with seminal works, from Miró’s timid early sketches to paintings from his last years.

15. Scope out examples of Modernista architecture

One of the things that makes Barcelona so charming is its Modernista architecture. An artistic movement that affected everything from literature and art to architecture, the Modernisme era lasted from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries.

You can identify these buildings by their bright colors, floral or botanical motifs, patterned tiles and curvy lines. Some of the best examples can be seen around the L'Eixample area, but you can also find them dotted all over the city. Besides Gaudí’s Modernista works, some of the best examples in the city are the  Palau de la Música Catalana and the  Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau , both designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

16. Explore up-and-coming El Poblenou

On the up is the formerly industrial neighborhood of El Poblenou, northeast of the center. Vacant warehouses are being reimagined as creative tech and design hubs, cafes, boutiques, bars and more.

17. Sip a drink at one of L'Eixample's rooftop bars

Admire Modernista marvels over a cocktail or vermouth. L'Eixample 's elegant streets conceal an array of hidden-away, view-laden open-air bars and cafes beloved by barcelonins , many of them within swish hotels but open to all.

Although, if you asked it about La Nit dels Museus (Museum Night), it would say that it casts its own peculiar spell, and has a special magnetism that is hard to explain, making it into a night that nobody, whatever their age, should miss.

Find out how to use the metro and bus in Barcelona

On the page How to travel by metro you will find full information on how the network operates: where stations are located, how to get to them, how to use the metro if your mobility is restricted, etc.

In How to travel by bus you will find full information on how the city's bus routes operate: rules of use, stops, how to validate a ticket, etc.

The bus fleet and several metro stations offer a Wi-Fi connection in collaboration with the Barcelona Wi-Fi project.

If you need to charge your mobile, Line 2 of the metro has USB charging points at some stations and also on the trains.

Enjoy the city at a flat rate

TMB offers tourists and visitors to get around the city in the most cosmopolitan of ways with products sold under the brand name of Hola Barcelona .

If your stay in Barcelona is only short and you want to get a general overview of the city, we recommend the Barcelona Bus Turístic . The official tourist bus tour of Barcelona offers you to discover the most emblematic places, monuments and attractions of the city:

If you prefer to get around independently or if your stay is longer, what you need is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card , a single-user ticket that provides you with unlimited journeys by metro, bus (TMB), metropolitan railway (FGC, zone 1), the Montjuïc funicular, the tram and local trains (Rodalies de Catalunya, zone 1). They are sold in a 2, 3, 4 or 5-day format, according to your requirements.

Children under four years old are exempt from needing a transport ticket and special discounts are available to people over 65 or anybody with a disability.

Avoid the rush hour and choose the best route

When it comes to planning your journeys, you will find the best transport options on the Journey planner . We recommend you use it through the TMB App .

You will find all the journey information you need on our application including itineraries, waiting times, timetable information, routes, maps, etc. The app also allows you to personalise your alerts, contact Customer Service and purchase tickets. If you are an active user you can also take advantage of benefits and exclusive prizes.

You can travel by public transport 24 hours

Barcelona is a very lively city both by day and by night. The metro operates from 05:00 until midnight from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday night going into Saturday the metro runs until 02:00 and on Saturday and Sunday nights and the nights before a public holiday there is an uninterrupted all-night service.

Buses operate all day, including weekends, and the schedules and service frequencies are different for each route. Barcelona also has an urban and inter-urban bus service at night.

You will find all of the information you need on the webpage Operating hours .

If you would like to enjoy a panoramic visit of the city by night then the Barcelona Night Tour will give you a different perspective of the most iconic sights, given that the city by night is a show in itself, with unique attractions full of light and colour.

Always validate your ticket at the entrance and carry it with you always

In the metro, if you don't have a ticket, you can buy one from the ticket machines because, in order to pass through the turnstiles, you must have your ticket stamped by the validating machine.

On the bus it is also compulsory to stamp your ticket in the validating machine. To make it easier for other passengers to board and to speed up the time at stops, you should have your ticket ready in your hand. If you don't have a ticket you can buy one from the driver.

Consult the terms and conditions of ticket use and always keep your valid ticket on you throughout your entire journey, as at any time you could be asked to produce it by a ticket inspector. If you are unable to do so you are committing an act of fraud .

Children under four years old are exempt from needing a ticket to travel.

Metro and bus service for all

If you need to travel with luggage by metro or bus, if you are travelling with a pet, or you have any other queries about the city's transport regulations you will find full information on the webpage Advice and rules for use .

Advice on how to get to major events in the city

If you are coming to Barcelona to go to a concert, trade fair, football match or any other major event in the city, get there using public transport. On the webpage Events and notices we explain how.

If you have reduced mobility, travel by public transport

On the bus you will find reserved seating on board. For blind people or those with a visual impairment, there are audio and visual warning systems on the exterior of the vehicles, with an info-accessibility device for the blind. There is a system of signage on the ticket validators inside the vehicles that uses colour contrasts and Braille so that you can read the identification number of the bus on which you are travelling.

The entire Barcelona metro network is accessible apart from some stations and interchange points involving other operators. You will find metro maps in Braille at the Punts TMB customer service offices.

The Barcelona Bus Turístic has the same facilities as the rest of the bus fleet on its lower deck and now has an audio induction loop for deaf people, with an audiophone that enables them to hear the audioguide more clearly.

The Montjuïc Cable Car is also a totally adapted facility.

Information about accessibility on the metro and bus networks is available on the webpage Accessibility and reduced mobility .

This popular European city is the latest to increase its tourist tax to battle overtourism

visit barcelona hashtags

Barcelona is the latest European city to increase its city-wide tourist tax, a slight increase of €0.50 (about $0.53) per night, as the city seeks to curb overtourism.

The new price of €3.25 (about $3.45) was implemented on April 1 as part of the Stays in Tourist Establishments Tax . The bylaw was introduced in 2021, when the tourist tax was €0.75 (around $0.80) per night, and gradually increased the tax each year through 2024. Now, if someone is staying in Barcelona for seven nights, the new total tax amount will be €22.75 (around $24).

“It was the objective sought: to contain the number of tourists and increase tourist income because our model is no longer mass tourism but quality tourism, which adds value to the city,” deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said in March, according to Euronews .

The tax is added to a tourist’s accommodations bill when they stay at official tourist establishments in the city. The money goes toward enhancing the city’s infrastructure, such as improving roads.

Other popular European destinations, such as Amsterdam and Venice, also recently increased tourist taxes for similar reasons.

Are tourist taxes the future of travel? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

“The new and increasing tourist fees across Europe allow cities to fund measures to attract more vacationers, support the local infrastructure and businesses, as well as preventing damages from overtourism,” Tiffany Mealiff, a travel insurance expert at Quotezone , said in a statement to USA TODAY.

However, Barcelona visitors have had to pay a regional tourist tax since 2012, according to Euronews . This tax amount depends on a traveler’s accommodation type, costing more if someone is staying at a luxury hotel than an Airbnb.

Barcelona continues to reign as Spain’s most popular tourist destination. In 2022, Barcelona welcomed 9.7 million tourists , just slightly below pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Barcelona City Council. However, tourists were found to be staying in the city longer than in 2019.

In 2022, the city also sought to cap the number of people in a tour group and ban megaphones by tour guides in an effort to curb the disruptive effects of overtourism.

Travelers planning their European getaway should be mindful of the additional costs that “are often not obvious beforehand,” according to Mealiff, as they plan their trip budgets.
