The Golden Record

Pioneers 10 and 11, which preceded Voyager, both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other spacefarers that might find them in the distant future. With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2, a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record, a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.

Screen Rant

10 star trek voyager tattoos only true fans will understand.

Star Trek Voyager was among the most popular of the Star Trek shows, and here are 10 awesome fan tattoos that showcase that love.

Of all the different Star Trek series,  Voyager  is one of the most maligned. Whether it's because the format was different, the crew was non-traditional, or there were simply too many better Star Trek series to choose from, it didn't always connect with fans. Led by Captain Katherine Janeway, the crew of the USS Voyager spent 75 years trying to return home from the Delta Quadrant, beyond where most Starfleet officers dared go. The crew faced marauders, Borg, and when times were particularly desperate, each other's worst sides.

The fans of Voyager  tend to be a scrappy bunch, who have found their own characters to root for as every Star Trek lover does, and are used to defending the series they love even within their fandom. Therefore it's something special when they get tributes to it on their skin. Here are 10  Voyager  tattoos only true fans understand.

RELATED:   Star Trek: 10 Hidden Details About The Main Characters Of Voyager

Despite his sardonic sense of humor and lousy bedside manner, the EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) aboard  Voyager  became a favorite character in the series. He sprang into action early on in the series when the ship was hurtled into the Delta Quadrant and, like Data on  Star Tre: The Next Generation,  underwent his share of growth as an artificial life form.

The doctor not only would go on to learn to exercise more empathy with his patients, but he'd also create a family for himself in the holodeck and help a Borg crewmember reintegrate into the Federation. This colorful tattoo by Matt Youl captures his pragmatic expression, as well as conveys the fact through cubism that he exists digitally.

The Borg Queen

While the Borg may have been introduced in  Star Trek: The Next Generation,  they were a big part of  Voyager  as well. With the ship out in the Delta Quadrant, the crew could expect a run-in with a Borg Cube at any time. One such encounter resulted in the rehabilitation of a Borg drone who became a member of the crew, Seven of Nine.

Seven of Nine was one of the favorite drones of the Queen, depicted in a neo-classic tattoo here that resembles something an intergalactic sailor might get. The Borg Queen wanted Seven because she viewed her as a perfect specimen whose time aboard a Federation ship gave her valuable information on human weaknesses.

USS Voyager

The USS  Voyager  was a unique Intrepid-class ship in Starfleet with more maneuverability and a different energy makeup than the USS  Enterprise. The crew nearly spent 75 years trying to get back to the Alpha Quadrant, encountering new life and new civilizations in the Delta Quadrant at every turn.

With its distinct spade-like front that distinguished itself from the "saucer" of the Enterprise, it makes a perfect silhouette for this arm tattoo. It's placed in front of a Starfleet badge depicting the beautiful tapestry of space in blue and red.

Seven of Nine

Seven of Nine was a rehabilitated Borg drone that served aboard the USS Voyager under Captain Janeway's command. With 18% of her Borg implants still housed inside her, she would always be reminded of her former life as part of the collective, even as she learned to adapt to human society again.

Seven of Nine became one of the series most popular members of the main cast when she arrived, and true fans even liked her in her full Borg aesthetic. This tattoo depicts Seven before she's been reintegrated into Federation society, with a shaved head and housed in her partially cybernetic bodysuit.

Captain Janeway

As the first female captain in the big chair leading one of the franchise's first spin-off series, Captain Janeway had to face enormous pressure. She never let it deter her, and the petite captain with the science background made herself a pot of black coffee and got to work.

This fantastic arm piece courtesy of Guen Douglas showcases the strength and grit of Katherine Janeway striking a pose that pays homage to another woman that pioneered in the sci-fi genre, Sarah Connor from Terminator. There's even a little Ellen Ripley we like to think.

RELATED:  Star Trek Voyager: 5 Times Janeway Was the Best Captain (And 5 Times She Was the Worst)

Voyager Borg'd Starfleet Badge

Though the Borg were introduced in  The Next Generation,  they had the strongest presence in  Voyager  for two reasons; the ship was in the Delta Quadrant, one of their primary hunting grounds, and it carried one of their former collective, Seven of Nine aboard.

This "Borged" Starfleet badge tattoo represents both the capacity for Borg to become part of Starfleet in a positive way (Seven of Nine) and in a negative way (such as when Captain Picard was assimilated for his Starfleet intel). We'll see just how much the Borg has to do with Starfleet in  Picard,  the new CBS All Access series that takes place 20 years after the events of  Star Trek: Nemesis.

Voyager Boldly Going

For some Star Trek fans, like @simplydarkness1,  Voyager  was so much more than a television show. It was a savior. Having suffered from anxiety, depression, and suicidal urges, she watched  Voyager  in her darkest moments to feel uplifted and know that, even when it's tough for the Voyager crew, they persevere.

Her tattoo represents not only the readings on a heart monitor, to represent a commitment to a stable and healthy life, but also her commitment to the fandom that saw her through her toughest trials and tribulations. She knows if she does any sort of self-harm, she'll ruin her beautiful tattoo! True Voyager fans know how much the series means to so many people.

Seven of Nine Pinup

While some will say Seven of Nine's introduction to  Voyager  was purely for the ratings spike, most Star Trek fans valued the character's contribution to the series. Jeri Ryan could have been type-cast as nothing more than eye candy, but she put a lot of effort into making the role more substantial.

This tattoo highlights her feminine wiles in a neo-classical take on sailor pinups, giving the rehabilitated Borg drone a stylized and vintage look. It captures the whimsical quality that Seven could sometimes have, such as when she dressed in 40s lounge attire and sang old standards in the holodeck.

Kes was a divisive character on Voyager, with either too much direct involvement in the plot or too little to do. It often felt like she was in a state of limbo aboard the ship, which in some ways she was, being the only representative of her species aboard. She became mostly recognized through her relationship to ship's morale officer, Neelix.

This portrait of Kes courtesy of Rob Pawlewski depicts some of the strengths of the character, especially before she left to explore her powers. Only true  Voyager  fans would get a tattoo of someone other than the main bridge crew.

The Doctor's Mobile Emitter

Once the EMH had his mobile emitter, he was no longer stuck in sickbay all day and could become a more complete part of the crew. Being a hologram greatly decreased his agency which, once he discovered he actually wanted o to pursue his individuality, was a source of constant consternation.

This tattoo by Kat of Enchanted Ink perfectly captures the details of the small device that gave the doctor so much freedom. It was a huge boon for the crew, especially since he could go into areas too toxic for flesh and blood members and provide aid in dangerous environments without the need for provisions.

Who the Hell Can Understand the Voyager Disc's User Manual?

In a very distant future an alien spaceship will come across one of the Voyager spacecrafts. And when they do, they will find two things: a golden disc—a space-proof metal version of a normal vinyl record containing sounds, music and images from Earth—and a record player .

Related Content

When that happens, we will subject the aliens to the same torture that gadget companies have been imposing on us for decades: a user manual. It's not hard to imagine that this reason alone will be enough to cause an interplanetary war.

When NASA started to work on the Voyagers, Carl Sagan and other scientists working in the project wanted to include a description of us and our planet, for anyone who could come across the spaceships, being alien or human. His words:

The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this 'bottle' into the cosmic 'ocean' says something very hopeful about life on this planet.

Sagan also publicly said that "the record is best seen as a time capsule or a symbolic statement more than a serious attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial life" but, knowing his views on the matter, I can't help but think that he probably had some hope about it being found by someone.

To that effect, a team started to curate a list of sounds, music pieces and images that would be the perfect representation of planet Earth. Or, at least a nice testimony of our understanding of it.

They recorded all this data in analog form on one side of the disc. That was the only technology available at the time, when they launched in 1977. No MP3s or JPEGs or animated GIFs. On the other side of the disc they etched a quick reference card . I can't make any sense out of it, but obviously I'm neither an engineer nor an alien, despite what some of my wives have said.

If they are successful at deciphering this gibberish—and, given that they will have interstellar spaceships, chances are that they will be more successful than you or I—they will get to listen to the sounds in this video among many others. Some of them are quite scary. I don't know if I would like to visit Earth after listening to them—although, by the time someone finds this, the things making those sounds will probably be gone from the face of the planet. Jimmy Carter, then US President, included the following message:

This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours.

Never a greeting card was so gloomy as this one.

The aliens will also get to hear music from Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and Stravinsky, along with Blind Willie Johnson and Chuck Berry. I'm quite happy to know that Berry will be rocking in the clean room of some Imperial Star Destroyer. Roll Over, Vader.

They will also find the images in the second video. 116 images encoded in analogue form, composed of 512 vertical lines—a video signal that will play fine in any old TV set. The images were selected to give a good idea of our place in the universe, showing everything from the planets in our solar system to our internal body structure (always nice to show your guts to hungry aliens) and different scenes from Earth.

Incredibly enough, among the images there weren't any pictures of a naked man or woman, showing us bare as species. Apparently, NASA told Sagan and his colleagues that they wanted to avoid the controversy of the Pioneer plaque, which was attacked by prude conservative groups in the United States—which I guess is a testimony of the sad state of things in this country at the time (and now).

I didn't learn about that until today and I'm speechless that NASA conceded. It seems that some people were—and still are, I'm sure—afraid to show human penises and breasts to an alien civilization traveling in a spaceship. Think about that. Now that is reason enough to wipe out our planet. Or at least, abduct all those morons. Maybe that's what the rapture is all about.

In any case, chances are that aliens will hear and see us way before someone crosses paths with this golden greeting card. Radio signals travel way faster than Voyager—at the speed of light—and in every direction. And we have been sending them for decades now. Even if the radio signals degrade after 50 light years, a passing starship flying a few light years away (or perhaps a listening outpost) would catch them sooner and easier than finding Voyager—which, in the immensity of space, it's the perfect example of the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Star Trek Series Episodes

The episode of Star Trek Voyager begins with a faint energy wave detected by the U.S.S Voyager at the coordinates 9-2-5-4. The crew discovers a primitive planet that houses a race of Native Americans called the “Watawana” of which Chakotay (Robert Beltran) is a direct descendent.

The crew beam down to the planet, where Chakotay soon discovers that the Watawana believe him to be their lost leader, the “Sky Spirit”. The Watawana had been exiled from their home on the Homeworld many years before and left without a leader. Chakotay, because of his ancestral ties, is seen as the only one who can lead them back home and bring peace to their people.

Meanwhile, the Voyager crew discovers that the Watawana are being kept in a state of suspended animation, their minds enslaved to a powerful alien race, the Kazon. The Kazon are using the Watawana’s energy for their own purposes and it is up to the Voyager crew to free them.

Meanwhile, Chakotay is struggling to come to terms with his newfound heritage. He believes that the Watawana are his responsibility, but is unsure how to lead them. He begins to understand the Watawana’s struggle and is determined to bring them home.

The Voyager crew devise a plan to free the Watawana from the Kazon’s mind control. They enlist the help of Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and create a subspace transceiver to disrupt the Kazon signal. With the transceiver in place, the Watawana are released from the Kazon’s control.

The crew also discovers that the Watawana have a unique method of conveying their history and culture to future generations: a tattoo. Chakotay is given a special tattoo that symbolizes his leadership of the Watawana and his responsibility to his people.

The Voyager crew helps the Watawana to establish a safer home on a nearby planet, and Chakotay joins them in leading their people to a better future. With the help of the Voyager crew, the Watawana find peace and a new home.

The episode of Star Trek Voyager concludes with Chakotay’s special tattoo and the Watawana’s newfound hope for the future. With the help of the Voyager crew, the Watawana have been able to reclaim their heritage and reclaim their place in the galaxy. The episode serves as a reminder that even during the toughest of times, hope can be found.

Scarlet Lady Adds Squid Ink Studio for exclusive tattoos at sea.

If you’ve ever even considered getting a really unique tattoo, this might be the cruise for you. Virgin Voyages has announced that their first ship, Scarlet Lady, will offer tattoos at sea at their new Squid Ink studio.

Partnering with World Famous Tattoo Ink, Virgin Voyages’ Squid Ink will have two full-time resident tattoo artists on board. Leading the ink pros is Lou Rubino Jr., visionary for World Famous Tattoo Ink.

“Tattooing is a time-honored seafaring tradition, and we’re continuing that legacy with rock and roll style by bringing some of the best ink artists to sea,” said Tom McAlpin, president and chief executive officer for Virgin Voyages. “Our sailors are looking to make lifelong memories, and we think there’s no better way to commemorate their first voyage with us than with a souvenir they’ll never lose track of.”

When Scarlet Lady debuts in 2020, Squid Ink will feature celebrity guest tattoo artists during the cruise. At this time, the lineup includes Spike TV’s Ink Master star Sarah Miller, surrealist specialist artist Arlo DiCristina and illustrative specialist Jime Litwalk.

Only vegan ink

All Squid Ink tattoos will use World Famous Tattoo Ink original vegan ink. The company creates their inks with no animal by-products or testing. Besides tattoos, you can also get body piercings. You can also have permanent makeup tattooed with vegan-friendly Perma Blend pigments. In a logical move, Virgin Voyages will permit crew members to display their tattoos, something most other cruise lines do not allow.

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills: Green Lungs, place to relax and meet

voyager disk tattoo

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills

The history of the gorky.

The park was built in Soviet times between the two world wars and named after the author Maxim Gorky at the time. Up until the turn of the century, the area not far from the center was only a residential area with huge estates and then, in the turmoil of the civil war and shortly afterwards, served as an illegal landfill where citizens and entrepreneurs disposed of their garbage. After intensive cleaning in the early communist years, the site was first used as an agricultural exhibition in the mid-1920s until the Moscow City Council decided to set up a park here that was accessible to all citizens of Moscow. After all, this was supposed to take a full ten years of construction. Throughout the entire Soviet period, the park was incredibly popular and familiar to every Soviet citizen, whether from Moscow or not.

Rebirth after basic renovation

However, after the end of the Soviet Union, the area fell into disrepair – cheap hustle and bustle like shooting booths and slowly rusting rides shaped the sad picture. Only outsiders got lost in the park, which lived more from its reputation than from the sad reality. Only with the fundamental and just as expensive renovation in 2011 did the Gorky become the park it was once loved by the locals. Especially the promenade along the river with its large sunbathing areas in summer and the numerous ice rinks for ice skating in winter now attract thousands of locals to Gorky every day. Countless food and café stands scattered across the site provide visitors with everything imaginable – from Georgian delicacies, a decent café to traditional Russian kvass, or ice cream and smoothies in summer.

Concerts, art and privacy place

Even bigger crowd pullers are just the concerts in the park and these have a long tradition here. In 2018 alone, David Guetta, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers and Lana del Rey performed numerous international music greats Open Air. But even outside the big events there is always something to see in the Gorky. The modern art center “Garage” (website https://garagemca.org/en ) in the park holds regular art and design exhibitions. In addition, the art center gave the park the largest children’s playground in all of Russia for its 90th birthday in 2018. Numerous play equipment, including 29 different swings alone, are the perfect place to spend a few hours with the youngsters. Pedal boats can also be rented at several locations in the park, for example at the Andreevsky ponds, which is also suitable for children. Sports courses for adults are held regularly in the park. From jogging to yoga or Pilates there are organized courses – beach volleyball fields, soccer fields and an open air fitness studio offer further opportunities to do sports. Afterwards, beer gardens invite you to linger – all of this happens primarily in the central part of Gorky Park, known as the Neskuchny Garden. Would you like to experience Gorky Park and the magic of Moscow by yourself? Then you need a visa first – you can find out how to get it here !

voyager disk tattoo

Away from the central part: Muzeon and Sparrow Hills

In the section called Muzeon north of the Crimean Bridge there are over 1000 statues, Soviet monuments and modern art facilities. This open-air museum-like section of the Gorky invites you to take a walk that takes you past oversized and pompous Soviet busts as well as avant-garde art objects of the 21st century. Surrounded by statues of Lenin, this section looks partly surreal. The Stalin statue in particular, which had its nose removed, magically attracts visitors. For photographers, the sometimes slightly rusty busts and remains from the Soviet era offer great motifs. If you’d like to improve yourself as a promising photographer, you can even take a photography course in the park at Photoplay ( https://photoplay.ru/courses/workshop/photoplayatgorky.html ) At 2900 rubles, i.e. just under $ 41, this is significantly more affordable than comparable products in Asia or Australia. No wonder this section is considered an Instagram paradise for Moscow’s exploding hipster scene. Events are also held time and again in the Muzeon – for example, the warm months over and over here are held cinema screenings outdoors. Russian classics such as international cinema are shown. You have absolute peace in the Sparrow Hills, which also belong to the park but are spatially separated from the other part. About four kilometers further along the Moskva River out of town is this section of the Gorky Park, which is largely natural. There, just opposite the large Luzhniki Stadium on the other side of the Moskva River, where the Olympics and the World Cup finals have already taken place, there is another privacy place in the middle of Moscow. At the highest point of the Sparrow Hills, to which a cable car leads, you have a fantastic view of Moscow.
