The American science-fiction author of countless novels, Ben Bova is almost an institution now in his own right, having produced a vast and highly expansive backlog of work over the entire course of his career overall, with a whole host of different novels under his belt, with him having produced a whole score of different titles spanning a range of genres coming into it as well. These include fantasy and science-fiction, as he has become well known for having a vast imagination, as the scope of his vision is almost unmatched, with him becoming respected by both his many peers and contemporaries alike over the years. This has also transferred into large numbers of sales too, as he has been able to garner readers from all over the world, all eagerly awaiting each installment with eagerness and anticipation. Knowing and understanding the format of the genre both inside and out, he manages to get to the heart of the subject matter quite unlike any other. Teaching science-fiction as a subject at university level as well, he knows the topic both inside and out, right down to the last final fundamental details. This allows him to write with confidence and wit, writing about the subjects he wants to, putting forwards the ideas he wants in a clear and legible style. With a highly visual sense too, he has also taught film previously, as Hollywood has shown an interest in his work too, as he has also written for the television too. Speaking for outlets such as NPR too, he has really made a name for himself as a spokesperson for his craft too, allowing him to become a prominent name and brand throughout the industry. Crafting quality well written stories alongside expertly drawn characters who come alive off of the page, he really manages to make the most of each of his stories. It is also his series that really manage to draw the readers in too, as they take the reader essentially on a journey, with many of his franchises spanning all across space. Following the lead character of one Keith Stoner, it sees him as he receives an alien signal for the first time, putting everything on the line to make sense of it. This leads him on a journey, as the world around him changes forever, with nothing ever remaining the same as he thought he knew it.
Running for a total of four novels, this would start out in 1981, with each subsequent release being published intermittently over the years, as the final title would come out in 2009. Originally the first novel, ‘Voyagers’, would come out in 1981, followed by ‘The Alien Within’ in 1986, ‘Star Brothers’ in 1990, and ‘The Return’ in 2009. The last book would also make up the nineteenth title in the ‘The Grand Tour’ series as well, making it a highly comprehensive series incorporating a whole range of different elements into it. With these books retaining a timeless quality, they will stand the test of time for many years to still come yet.
Published through the Tor Books publishing label, this was originally released in 1981 on the the 15th of August to much acclaim. Generating a lot of publicity upon its initial release, it would manage to set the series up as a whole, allowing it to bring the characters to life, giving them all a sense of purpose and momentum. With the lead character of Keith Stoner himself being introduced for the first time too, it gives the reader a clear idea of what’s to come too.
This would be the first book in the Voyagers series, and it would, therefore, provide a lot of the grand ideas and concepts that Bova would include over the following series. The characters are also realistically portrayed too, allowing the reader to relate to them and their motivations on a far more personal level. In regards to the world itself, it would also be fully realized, with many of the locations becoming a lot more prominent as the story progresses.
Previously an astronaut now turned physicist, Keith Stoner has picked up some signals from space and he is certain that they’re not random. The signal itself is heading straight for earth, as it appears that he could potentially be the first human-being in history to confront this particular enigma. One problem is, though, that he may have to put everything on the line, even potentially giving up the one he loves most. Will he manage it? Can he give up everything? Who are the voyagers?
The Alien Within
Brought out through the Tor Books publishing label once more, this would continue directly on from the last one, taking the series forwards in the process. Released in 1986, it would essentially provide the next chapter for Keith Stoner, as it picks up from where the previous one left off. It would also include a great deal of character development too, something which Bova has clearly become confident with now.
Eighteen years previously Keith Stoner had fallen into suspended animation whilst detailing an alien craft on a joint US-USSR mission to understand the ship. During this time Jo Camerata, the once ambitious young female student who once loved Stoner passionately, is now the head of Vanguard Industries, as she has full control of the craft, technology and Stoner along with it. The only problem is, though, that Stoner has brought something back with him living in his brain, and it appears that this alien keeping him alive wants to do some exploring through him. Can Stoner discover the truth before it’s too late? Where did this alien come from? What will be discovered from the alien within?
The Voyagers Series
With both action and suspense, this is a series that makes the most of its genre and its premise, as it really brings its subject matter to life, really giving the reader something to invest themselves in. Using elements of mystery at the center of its premise, it allows its stories to come alive through it well realized sense of character, as the protagonists each resonate with the reader. A true master of his craft, this is a series that really understands what its about, and is a definite must for any fans of the genre, marking it as a classic for a long time to follow.

- Trivia The movie is considered to be a futuristic version of the 1954 William Golding novel Lord of the Flies (1990) .
- Goofs The outer airlock hatch is left open for two minutes and twenty seconds, minimum, after the antagonist explosively opens the inner airlock hatch. The air rushes past the individuals in the lock at a high rate of speed, rapidly depressurizing the ship (as evidence by ship warnings declaring emergency oxygen is being released into the ship). This goes on and on, while the heroes spend a lot of time struggling with Zac. In reality, the wind would die down quickly, and a good portion of the ship would be in a severely depressurized atmosphere in a very short time, causing almost immediate loss of consciousness for anyone not holding their breath (which Zac clearly was not doing, as he can be heard grunting and gasping for breath while struggling).

Patrick Carman on his mission:
Since 2003, I’ve been writing books for young readers and spending a lot of time on the road, meeting them where they’re at. More than 2500 school visits later, I can report from the field that kids still love books, even as a tidal wave of distraction try to keep them from turning pages. Books still shape young minds, and they still provide unparalleled advantages every kid needs. My mission after nearly two decades and thousands of school visits hasn’t changed: get every kid excited about reading, because reading helps every kid thrive.
When I visit schools I always ask lots of kids the same question: what’s keeping you from reading? Let me count the ways! Netflix, YouTube, Fortnite, Minecraft, Snapchat, Roblox, and Instagram top the list. None of these things are bad in and of themselves, but taken together, they build a wall around books that can be difficult for a kid to climb. That’s why Skeleton Creek goes looking for kids where they are. Through the use of video content and words, Skeleton Creek draws kids in and hooks them on reading. Sometimes we just have to be willing to meet them halfway.

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft finally phones home after 5 months of no contact
On Saturday, April 5, Voyager 1 finally "phoned home" and updated its NASA operating team about its health.
NASA's interstellar explorer Voyager 1 is finally communicating with ground control in an understandable way again. On Saturday (April 20), Voyager 1 updated ground control about its health status for the first time in 5 months. While the Voyager 1 spacecraft still isn't sending valid science data back to Earth, it is now returning usable information about the health and operating status of its onboard engineering systems.
Thirty-five years after its launch in 1977, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space . It was followed out of our cosmic quarters by its space-faring sibling, Voyager 2 , six years later in 2018. Voyager 2, thankfully, is still operational and communicating well with Earth.
The two spacecraft remain the only human-made objects exploring space beyond the influence of the sun. However, on Nov. 14, 2023, after 11 years of exploring interstellar space and while sitting a staggering 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, Voyager 1's binary code — computer language composed of 0s and 1s that it uses to communicate with its flight team at NASA — stopped making sense.
Related: We finally know why NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft stopped communicating — scientists are working on a fix
In March, NASA's Voyager 1 operating team sent a digital "poke" to the spacecraft, prompting its flight data subsystem (FDS) to send a full memory readout back home.
This memory dump revealed to scientists and engineers that the "glitch" is the result of a corrupted code contained on a single chip representing around 3% of the FDS memory. The loss of this code rendered Voyager 1's science and engineering data unusable.
The NASA team can't physically repair or replace this chip, of course, but what they can do is remotely place the affected code elsewhere in the FDS memory. Though no single section of the memory is large enough to hold this code entirely, the team can slice it into sections and store these chunks separately. To do this, they will also have to adjust the relevant storage sections to ensure the addition of this corrupted code won't cause those areas to stop operating individually, or working together as a whole. In addition to this, NASA staff will also have to ensure any references to the corrupted code's location are updated.

On April 18, 2024, the team began sending the code to its new location in the FDS memory. This was a painstaking process, as a radio signal takes 22.5 hours to traverse the distance between Earth and Voyager 1, and it then takes another 22.5 hours to get a signal back from the craft.
By Saturday (April 20), however, the team confirmed their modification had worked. For the first time in five months, the scientists were able to communicate with Voyager 1 and check its health. Over the next few weeks, the team will work on adjusting the rest of the FDS software and aim to recover the regions of the system that are responsible for packaging and returning vital science data from beyond the limits of the solar system.

V-1 was launched when I was 25 years young; I was nearly delirious with joy. Exploring the physical universe captivated my attention while I was in elementary school and has kept me mesmerized since. Nike Debuts First Shoe in Devin Booker Partnership, Nike Book 1
Product news.
The shoe design features lifestyle aesthetics blended with performance functionality.
Original content published: September 14, 2023
It’s official: Devin Booker, the all-star basketball player, has officially joined Nike’s signature family. Kicking off the collaboration, Nike has released the Nike Book 1, the first installment in Booker’s signature series with the brand, set to be released spring 2024.
Featuring both lifestyle aesthetics and performance functionality, the shoe invokes Booker’s playing style: classic with heavy focus on mastering the game. “Early on, we landed on the phrase ‘future classic,’” Booker said. “At the beginning of the design process, we landed on the idea of the shoe combining lifestyle and performance worlds. The goal was to create something that would be timeless.”
According to a press release shared by Nike, to begin the design process of the Nike Book 1, Booker provided a handful of shoe silhouettes he found especially attractive, including the Air Force 1, Blazer, and AJ1. A creative thinker on and off the court, Booker shared inspiration outside of footwear, too, namely one of his restored vintage cars, a 1972 Chevy Blazer K5, which he lovingly calls “Uncle Larry.”
With plenty of creative foundation laid, the vision of the shoe was clear: provide athletes footwear that celebrated Booker’s playing style with his love of classic design. The result? The Nike Book 1 features elements that help with lateral stability, cushioning, and underfoot responsiveness, the same release said. Under the hood of the shoe, as it were, Nike design teams layered Cushlon 2.0 foam within the midsole and “a rigid TPU sidewall for added support, with a top-loaded Nike Zoom air bag in the heel,” the release said.
Just like his beloved Chevy, the outside of the shoe is all about the aesthetics coupled with purpose. For example, work-wear canvas and twill on the upper provide further durability. Meanwhile, a suede collar and leather across the forefoot contribute to a plush and broken-in feel.
Coming spring 2024, the Nike Book 1 will be available in two signature colorways.

Was Amazon's success from innovating retail or cornering the market on e-commerce when the internet was still a fringe part of society? Was it by creeping into every part of our daily lives, from shopping to entertainment to health care? Or was it through the iron-fisted leadership and take-no-prisoners attitude of its founder Jeff Bezos?
A new book explores all of those questions and more. It's called " The Everything War: Amazon's Ruthless Quest to Own the World and Remake Corporate Power .”

IR-2024-115, April 18, 2024
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued its annual Data Book detailing the agency’s activities during fiscal year 2023 (Oct. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023), including revenue collected and tax returns processed.
For FY 2023, the IRS collected approximately $4.7 trillion, or about 96 percent of the funding that supports the federal government’s operations — to fund everything from education to national defense.
During FY 2023, the IRS processed more than 271.4 million tax returns and other forms, including more than 163.1 million individual income tax returns.
Beyond statistics, the 2023 Data Book reflects the initial impacts of the historic long-term funding provided under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 to transform the IRS and modernize how the agency serves the American people.
“This once-in-a-generation funding opportunity provided by the IRA is an investment in the transformation of the IRS and an investment in the financial future of our nation,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel wrote in the Data Book introduction. “The effects of this IRA funding — to hire more IRS employees and modernize the agency’s technology and systems to provide better service to the American people — started showing up in the 2023 tax season. And that progress has accelerated into 2024.”
In FY 2023, with new phone assistors hired through IRA funding, IRS employees answered nearly 27.3 million phone calls — a 25% increase from FY 2022. The IRS opened or reopened more than 50 taxpayer assistance centers in FY 2023 that were closed during the pandemic. The IRS had more than 1.6 million contacts at 363 centers across the nation in FY 2023 to provide more in-person help to taxpayers – up 18% from FY 2022.
These increases in taxpayer assistance – on the phones, in person and on IRS.gov – are continuing in 2024, as highlighted earlier this week . The IRA funding is already making a difference for taxpayers, Werfel said — from shorter wait times for IRS telephone help, to more in-person and online resources for taxpayers, to the IRS’s free Direct File pilot tax filing program launched for 2024 in 12 states.
And the IRS has increased its enforcement and collections efforts on high wealth non-filers and those who underreport their tax liability through complex schemes. In FY 2023, there was no increase in audits of tax returns for taxpayers making under $400,000 per year.
After several challenging pandemic years, the IRS had a successful filing season in 2023, with the addition of 5,800 new employees hired to provide taxpayer service. Overall, the IRS’s workforce grew 5% in FY 2023.
Data highlights
The IRS issued $659 million in refunds to taxpayers during FY 2023 — a 2.7% increase over FY 2022.
In FY 2023, the IRS closed 582,944 tax return audits, resulting in $31.9 billion in recommended additional tax.
For all returns filed for tax years 2013 through 2021, the IRS examined 0.44% of individual returns filed and 0.74% of corporation returns filed, through the end of FY 2023.
The IRS has examined the returns of 8.7% of taxpayers filing individual returns reporting total positive income of $10 million or more for tax years 2013 through 2021, as of the end of FY 2023.
The IRS website had more than 880.9 million visits in FY 2023, including more than 303.1 million inquiries on its Where’s My Refund? online tool that enables taxpayers to check the status of their tax refund.
Some new features in the 2023 Data Book include two new tables from IRS’s Large Business & International Division focused on tax certainty programs. The Advance Pricing Agreement and Compliance Assurance Programs provide businesses the opportunity to work with the IRS to ensure tax compliance prior to filing, which benefits both businesses and the government.
The 2023 Data Book also features added information on telephone level of service with automation called LOS(A), and a trust score based on Performance.gov metrics.
