" A must do visit for anyone visiting Northern Kenya if only for one night. I would advise the A La Carte restaurant though. "

A truly wonderful place

Due to a bit of a disaster with a prearranged booking at another property in Nanyuki we were forced at extremely short notice to source alternative accommodation for our family stay. The last time we stayed in this wonderful place was 2005. It is still an exemplary hotel! The staff are amazingly attentive and professional from the minute you arrive at the main gate to the housekeeper turning down your room and setting your fire!!!! The animal orphanage is a must do now with lions and a leopard to see! Since Fairmont purchased the property they have refurbished considerably but the character of the place is not lost. The rooms and public areas are immaculate as are the grounds. We were fortunate to be blessed with a Chrystal clear view of the Summit of Mount Kenya which is rare and makes a wonderful family photo as a keepsake. This truly is one of the best hotels in the world.

We dined for lunch in order to decide whether we wanted to book a stay. Anthonio, Morine and Anne, along with the rest of the restaurant staff provided good service. The views are great of course. However the reservation we had booked was never recognized, the non dairy options are scarce (we asked about this ahead of time) and the talisker scotch we ordered was clearly something different (it happened twice).

The location, the staff, the accommodations, the food!

The facility is excellent, comfortable, and the staff very friendly and courteous, and they treated us very well. The food is fantastic! I can't wait to book my next stay at the same place!!

Breakfast was great, location is beautiful and serene

This hotel was a superb start to our honeymoon I'm Kenya. Everything about it from the welcome to the room to the food to the safari was perfect. We were with our 9 month old so everyone was very accommodating & we found it a comfortable stay for all of us. Bonus for our room was the fireplace & having it lit every night & hot water bottles in our room. The hotel is beautiful with gorgeous grounds & they're very organised for the game drives. Many thanks to Samson who we communicated with. & there's an animal orphanage on site. Kamata our driver was fantastic & we really enjoyed the game drive who did his best for us to see lions & giraffes! We did a closer & half day game drive as more suitable for baby. All the staff in the restaurant were great, special mention, Angelique. Definitely visit again if we go back to that part of Kenya again.

Grounds are magnificent with plenty of activities at the hotel and close proximity to amazing safaris. My wife and I included Mount Kenya Safari Club in our brief itinerary to the Highlands. Was worth it. Stayed in one of the lower cottages, beautiful view of Mount Kenya, lovely room and open fire each evening sealed the magic. The food and service were excellent. The staff were very attentive but unobtrusive. Only criticism was that the pond adjacent to the cottage had plastic and glass bottles floating in the water, pity that some guests didn’t take the trouble to the use the bins provided. Nonetheless, we would go again and highly recommended as a unique haven.

Stay North and South of the Equator at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club

Gina Baksa continues her tour of Kenyan Fairmont properties with a stay at the iconic Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club

High above Nairobi, our female Air Kenya pilots give us astonishing views from our 18-seater Twin Otter 300 plane over the city’s western suburbs before the landscape changes to dry brown scrub, then pockets of farmland crisscrossed by red-earth tracks turning greener as we neared the slopes of Mount Kenya – the Magic Mountain.

For that is certainly what Mt Kenya is. Our first sight of her through the sun haze is breathtaking: snow-covered jagged peaks are the plug of an ancient, now-extinct volcano. The 17,058-foot mountain looks ethereal.

No wonder local tribespeople consider Mt Kenya to be sacred. A protected area since 1949, it became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1973 and a World Heritage Site in 1997. Today, the whole area is managed by the Government-funded Kenya Wildlife Service.

Few hotels can boast they have the Equator running through their grounds, but such is the fortune of the historic Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club near Nanyuki in East Africa.

This award-winning 100-acre resort estate on the slopes of Mount Kenya has a fascinating history. Formerly the retreat of Hollywood star and game hunter William Holden, who sold the Safari Club estate to previous owner Adnan Khashoggi, this idyllic Kenyan hideaway still feels like a family home – albeit on a super-grand luxury scale.

By the time we land at Nanyuki’s grass airstrip, Mount Kenya – usually shrouded in fog and clouds – is clearly visible—an auspicious portent on our arrival at the Equator. The air smells fresh; there’s a slight wind to cool the heat; the sky an iridescent blue.

Acacia trees stand sentinel alongside the newly built runway. I inhale deeply like a free diver re-surfacing. There’s magic in the air here.

We arrive in minutes at the resort’s grand gated entrance. Security is tight at all Kenya’s Fairmont properties: The guards wave us through, and we enter an enchanted kingdom. The drive to the main house passes the stables, flame trees, more acacia and thorn trees, lush manicured lawns and gardens, vivid purple bougainvillaea and orange bird of paradise.

To greet us, a colourful group of Kikuyu dancers dressed in traditional costumes led us, singing and dancing to the exquisite Rose Garden for a very special Equator Ceremony and presentation of our Equator crossing certificates.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club lies at 7,000ft and straddles the Equator, so guests can spend part of their stay in the Southern Hemisphere and part in the North.

Our guide, Charles, demonstrates how water drains clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anti-clockwise in the southern.

It’s known as the Coriolis effect. How extraordinary to be in a garden divided by the Equator. The varying north and south energies are tangible here.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club offers guests a haven of tranquillity with 120 luxurious rooms. The main house, with its 1950’s colonial aesthetics and superb rooms and suites, an arc of independent cottages (huge two-bedroom luxury bungalows) and additional bungalows in a forested area of the estate.

It’s the perfect setting to marry the love of your life (the Signature Suite is a honeymoon favourite). And the perfect solo escape, as I discovered on entering my gorgeous two-bedroom bungalow.

Discreetly tucked away along the driveway to the right of the main house, it boasted a massive lounge space with a working fireplace (lit each night, thank you). And two beautiful bedrooms, each with ensuites with capacious bathtubs and showers. And all the amenities you’d expect at this level, including two hot water bottles discreetly placed in my bed each evening.

The expansive private terrace looked out across Mt Kenya across manicured lawns and a large pond that came alive each afternoon with birds. And to my left partial views of the main house.

The most beautiful escape. And I was only a few hundred yards from William Holden’s former cottage. Apparently, he set up a telescope in the garden so he could keep an eye on proceedings at the main house.

The silence is so welcome. There are no cars here, and the only noise you’ll hear during your stay are the bird calls from over 50 species: semi-tame sacred ibises, marabou storks, peacocks, Egyptian geese and lots of beautifully coloured smaller birds who approach the lunch and breakfast tables in anticipation.

Other resident animals include two gorgeous black Labs, Tusker and Grammy, who appeared to spend most of their day in blissed-out repose.

We had lunch in the courtyard (intriguingly divided by the Equator line – we chose to eat in the Northern Hemisphere). The choice of food here was superb: hot and cold dishes, salads, soups, starters, an incredible array of desserts and fruits. And a meat grill with freshly barbecued cuts of chicken, lamb and beef.

The pterodactyl-like Marabou storks with their grizzled heads waited patiently for titbits on the rooftops. They are the most extraordinary birds. They really do stalk when they walk.

Afterwards, I relaxed by the inviting outdoor pool, enjoying the spectacular views over sweeping terraced lawns towards the golf course and the rising majesty of Mt Kenya in the far distance. Of course, you could spend the whole time pool lounging or relishing the spa treatments (great massages from Margaret), but there’s so much else to do.

There’s a nine-hole golf course, a maze to get lost in, tennis and basketball courts, as well as horse-riding, mountain biking and nature walks. And fabulous bush dinners and game drives at Solio Game Reserve, Sweet Waters Game Reserve or further afield at Aberdare National Park and Samburu Game Reserve.

I took one of the mountain bikes around the estate and came across a group of Colobus monkeys playing tag in the trees. Black and white long-haired bodies leaping from branch to branch, their long white bushy tails like trailing scarves.

That evening, we dined on succulent barbecued pork, beef, lamb, Berber chicken and marinated prawns on the lantern-lit pontoon deck over the pond.

Warmed by the lively fire and fortified by Tusker beer, mains included pan-seared fish and delicious truffle mash, accompanied by fine local vintage wines and fabulous desserts (mousse, fudge, macaroons).

The backdrop to our voices were fish and frogs in the lake below us, their grunts and croaks echoing around the estate, giving the impression of much larger beasties.

After a sumptuous breakfast at the main house the following morning, we head for the Ol Pejeta Conservancy an hour’s drive from the hotel. Zebra, wild dogs and lions are here.

As well as the world’s last remaining three northern white rhinos, it’s a sanctuary for 113 critically endangered black rhinos and is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.

Today, the demand for ivory comes from Asia and the Middle East, where rhino horn is falsely considered to have medicinal properties and is used to make ornamental dagger handles.

A kilo of rhino horn can fetch up to $60,000 on the black market. Ironically, rhino horn is just made of the same substance as human fingernails – keratin.

We were honoured to meet Baraka, the blind black rhino who lives in his own 100-acre enclosure.

He has plenty of visitors and a specially designed platform affording a close-up experience with this remarkable animal. He was sleeping when we arrived, yet the brave keeper went down next to him to take photos.

In 1970, there were around 20,000 black rhinos living in Kenya. Due to poaching and drought, there are significantly fewer. We next meet Sudan, the only remaining northern white rhino.

Thought to be about 45, he’s an old fellow, heavily protected. He’s not entirely alone; there are three female northern white rhinos here, too, but they are not able to become pregnant.

So, the ambitious plan to avoid complete extinction is to use in vitro fertilisation. Since writing this, Sudan has sadly died—even more reason to protect these irreplaceable species.

Returning to the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club for lunch, we were treated to the most gorgeous dining setting in the exquisite Rose Garden. With beautiful arches and pergolas, a running stream and indigenous trees providing shade, it felt like an English country garden.

The perfect wedding location, we savoured tuna starters followed by an amazingly spiced vegetable curry with the best crème brulée. Magical.

Adjoining the Safari Club is an animal orphanage – part of the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy – and currently home to some 1200 animals. Privately owned and run, it was founded by William Holden and Don Hunt in the Sixties, supported by Don’s wife, Iris and actress Stefanie Powers.

Recognised by the Kenyan government, the education centre receives visits from hundreds of schoolchildren each year. We wandered among orphaned ostriches, Mountain Bongos (forest antelopes), llamas, monkeys, cheetahs, baby buffalo and a giant tortoise. There are also cheetahs and lynx.

A combination of animal rescue, adoption and rehabilitation here has ensured the survival of the endangered and rare Albino Zebra.

The conservancy, which is spread over 700 acres, is also home to the Mountain Bongo breeding programme, which has seen the population of the Bongo increase from 18 to 70, renewing hopes for their survival, whose population was below 100 in the wild.

Having been thrown from horses as a kid, I faced my fear and actually enjoyed a 1:1 ride with horseman John before dinner. Riding next to the Safari Club was a great way to get closer to a herd of white zebra, many deer – and sneaky warthogs who hide in the long grass and scare the horses. My trusty steed was spooked, but luckily, I was holding on tight. No bolting back to the stables this time.

We enjoyed a superb dinner on our final evening in the private dining room at Tusks.

With the fire lit, we all gathered around an impressive antique dining table, like a scene from out of Africa. Executive Chef Picco truly worked his magic with a range of African, Indian and European-inspired dishes—scallops starters followed by Salmon Wellington and a divine Pistachio and Coconut Ladoo. The flavours here are so fresh and flavoursome – what a joy to have local provenance.

Reclining on my bungalow lounger later that evening I stare up at the inky night sky. Lanterns flickering on the pontoon, the only visible light. And the stars. Pure, blissful silence. If heaven is a place on Earth, then Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club is as close as I’ll get.

East Africa has cast her spell once again—a magical and unforgettable experience.

It’s split in two by the equator, so your room mate could be sleeping in the southern hemisphere while you doze in the northern. All rooms have views of either the gardens, the forest or of Mount Kenya, and have a country club atmosphere, with wood-burning fireplaces, large, indulgent beds and luxurious furnishings. The Manor Suite

If you can’t get enough of the mystical mountain, then the Manor Suite is ideal for you. Situated in the original historical block of the resort, the suite features an open concept design including a spacious lounge area flaunting luxurious furnishings, a wooden lit fire place, a separate plush bedroom and a private balcony overlooking the swimming pool, picturesque gardens and unrivalled view of the mountain. William Holden Cottages

Named after the founder, the William Holden Cottages reflect the history and charm of the original residence. The cottage features an impressive 329 sqm space which is elegantly furnished and possesses a spacious lounge, a beautiful stone fire place, a regal five-piece en suite bathroom and a expansive private lawn overlooking the majestic mountain. The stunning cottage has two adjoining bedrooms which can be closed off for individual privacy or sold as a one or two bed roomed suite, each furnished with all the suite features and amenities.

Riverside Suite

Located on the river side and 2 minutes drive away from the main building, the suite is uniquely situated, providing a magnificent view of Mount Kenya from a tranquil seclusion. The room is luxuriously furnished with ample living space, which is separated from the bedroom with a beautiful stone fire place, a 5 piece en suite marble bathroom and a private terrace overlooking the forest.

Riverside Deluxe Suite

If privacy and serenity are on the agenda this is the perfect room for you. This room is uniquely located, providing a magnificent view of Mount Kenya from a tranquil seclusion. The room is luxuriously furnished with a spacious lounge,five-piece en suite marble bathroom and a private terrace overlooking the forest.

Delicious meals are eaten at Tusks Restaurant, where you can sit indoors by the fire or outside on the large terrace with beautiful views of Mount Kenya. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are eaten here: breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style and offer an abundance of Kenyan-inspired and continental dishes, while dinner is a four-course set menu. When I was there, superb chef Picco Alapatt whipped up an enormous Indian feast suitable for vegetarians, so those with dietary requirements need not fear. There’s also Zebar, the cosy lounge in which to sit by the fire with a cocktail before dinner. Enjoy an elegant dining affair at the Tusks Resturant, one of the most exquisite restaurants in Nanyuki. It offers a sophisticated indoor set up which extends onto a terrace, with a great view of the majestic mountain. Adjacent to it is the Zebar, a great spot to unwind after a day of adventure, whilst the Swimming Pool Bar is perfect for a tranquil rendezvous. The Mawingo room is popular for hosting private dinners and cocktail parties.

Tusks Restaurant And Terrace

Facing the snow-capped Mount Kenya and overlooking the property’s beautifully manicured grounds, the signature restaurant boasts a menu abounding with the incredible variety of foods that are farmed in Central Kenya. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, this elegant setting features terrace and indoor dinning around the original grand fireplace. Breakfast and lunch are served as buffet offering the best of what Kenya has to offer, dinner is served as a four course’s set menu with vegetarian options. Tusks Restaurant offers fantastic views on to Mount Kenya forest and snow caped peaks, in the evening, the original fire place will provide a warm and cozy atmosphere. Seating capacity is 120 people.

Zebar features large windows overlooking the gardens, snow covered peak of Mount Kenya and beyond. In addition to offering a relaxed lounge atmosphere, Zebar, resting on the equator, is one of the few places in the world where your server will have to cross from the southern to the northern hemisphere to retrieve your order. The menu includes choice of liqueurs, beers, soft drinks, cocktails, wines, spirits, tea and coffee, as well as a bar snacks.

Swimming Pool Bar

Relax by the pool, while your waiter serves you a refreshing cocktail crafted at the Zebar. Liqueurs, soft drinks, cocktails, tea and coffee, as well as a snack menu are served from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm.

The facilities are also excellent. Most notable is the nine-hole golf course, which holds the title of the only course in Africa to bisect the equator. There’s also a fantastic on-site animal orphanage, in which you can see everything from a 150-year-old tortoise to leopards hiding in trees.

There’s a pool bar and the Mawingo Room – an exclusive private dining venue set around a wood-burning fireplace with a collection of photos featuring actors from yesteryear.

Fame of Mount Kenya Safari Club

T his is the story of the fame of Mount Kenya Safari Club. Well before mass tourism, safari, meaning trip, was associated with hunting trips. The trips took considerable time and cash and included going after the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard. In the 1950s, the celebrity conservationist and Hollywood movie star William Holden did one such safari. He was accompanied by two of his friends, a Swiss and an American.

It was a time when Kenya was a destination for soldiers of fortune, intrepid travellers, hunters and settlers. The word conservation was not entirely understood as it is today. It was also a time before the independence of Kenya, and so the Mau Mau fighters of the Kikuyu tribe were starting their war of independence. They hid in the forests of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. These woods had upcountry inns that provided hunters with a place to respite for a few days, but with the risk of these freedom fighters, most of the north was empty. But the Sunset Boulevard celebrity William Holden along with his friends were ready to spend several weeks in Kenya despite the unrest.

Farm to fame

The beautiful town of Nanyuki with its broad street lies at the foothills of Mount Kenya. It was a buzzing marketplace with an expanding population dealing with all kinds of commerce and trade. Even today, Nanyuki, the last highland before descending into the northern plains, does indeed retains the frontier spirit. There was one accommodation in Nanyuki that was the favorite spot for William and his group. It is on the equator on mountain slopes that towers above the forests with gardens beyond. This place started out as a coffee farm just a few kilometers above Nanyuki town. By some quirk of fate, the owner was forced to sell it in 1960 due to crop failure, and that became the turning point in the lives of William Holden and his two friends. After lots of dreams and many drinks, the three bought it and named it Mount Kenya Safari Club.

Coveted private retreat

The inn converted into what became a gorgeous hotel in East Africa. The mesmerizing view alone is worth the trip to this majestic and historical hotel. Due to its unique location, Mount Kenya Safari Club later became a sanctuary for illustrious visitors such as Hollywood stars, celebrities, royalty and heads of state. It was a hideaway for the crowned heads and the glitterati and its “gold book” was a “Who’s Who.” Founded by William Holden and host to guests such as Winston Churchill and Bing Crosby, Mount Kenya Safari Club is an establishment with extraordinary views of the mountain. This historic club reflects the colonial architectural design, providing a glimpse of Kenya from a bygone era.

The twelve William Holden cottage suites, named after the founder, are identical and reflects the charm and history of the original residence. They possess spacious lounges and are elegant with beautiful stone fireplaces, expansive private lawns overlooking the mountain and five-piece ensuite bathrooms. The stunning suites have 2 adjoining bedrooms for 2 couples or a family, offering privacy and luxurious accommodation.

Fascination with nature

Mount Kenya ranch

Surrounding the 65 acres of grounds comprising the Mount Kenya Safari Club stood a mixed farm owned by a Major in the British army. When this adjacent land came up for sale, Holden and his group purchased it immediately to combine it with the grounds of Mount Kenya Safari Club. That was the birth of Mount Kenya Game Ranch with captive breeding programs of African species and an orphanage where Iris had raised rescued orphans, bringing them back from the brink of death. Conservation, preservation and the concept of “ecology” only became popular many years after Mount Kenya Game Ranch.

Wildlife conservation awareness

William Holden’s acting career spanned 40 years and included 80 films plus an Oscar. But the role in which Holden took the most pride was the co-founder and conservationist of the Mount Kenya ranch. Throughout his life, Holden continued his support of the game ranch and referred to it as the greatest of his life. His dedicated efforts to conserve the wildlife so precious to all soon expanded throughout the globe, as he instilled in everyone a reverence for the creatures of nature. In America and Britain, green movements brought wildlife conservation awareness to the forefront through tee shirts bearing a baby seal.

Endangered mountain bongo

Today, Mount Kenya Safari Club is a posh hotel located in Mount Kenya wildlife conservancy. It is home to the largest herd of mountain bongo in the world that is captive-born. The natural range of these endangered species was the Mau Escarpment and Aberdare national park. Hence plans are afoot to release 20 of these beautiful antelopes into Mount Kenya national park. The partners made the bongo the logo and symbol of the Mount Kenya Game Ranch because it was one of the rare species.

In 1973 Holden brought Stefanie Powers into his East African project, and she was swept up by his contagious enthusiasm. After William passed away, Powers and the Hunts established the William Holden Wildlife Foundation. The foundation carried out Holden’s unfinished work and received its IRS status in October 1982 as a Public Charity. The first group camped on the education center site the following year in January.
