North Bengal

North Bengal is truly a treasure hunt for nature lovers, especially for those who are looking for a periodical escape from the hectic chores of the modern city life. Lying in the Northern half of the State of West Bengal and encircled by international boundaries of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, North Bengal offers a unique combination of a varied landscape - from the high mountainous region in the extreme north to the vast Gangetic plains in the extreme south. The geographical diversity blended with the cultures of different ethnic groups has placed North Bengal in the most treasured tourist destinations in Northeast India. North Bengal comprises of seven districts - Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda.

The landscape, history, and cultures of each district have a distinguished character. While nature has showered his bountiful beauties in Darjeeling with great Himalayan ranges passing through it, Jalpaiguri, lying in the sub-Himalayan foothills, presents rich biodiversity with dense forests, varied faunal and floral life forms. Coochbehar is a city of old palaces of Koch kings, with temples and large water bodies. North and South Dinajpur are basically agricultural plains and Malda again is an old civilization and has its own importance from the archeological point of view for the famous ruins of Gour kingdom.

From the tourism aspect, North Bengal has immense potential to cater to the needs of all kinds of travelers. For luxurious leisure tours, adventures high and low altitude treks, exciting jungle safari, elephant safari, daring white water rafting, remote village tourism, ethnic tourism, cultural tourism, angling tour, ornithology tour, heritage tour and much more North Bengal is just the place one needs to go.

Understand [ edit ]

Name [ edit ].

The term "West Bengal" (পশ্চিমবঙ্গ POHSH-chihm-bawng-goh ) originated during the partition of India in 1947, as the name of the Indian state carved out of the western parts of the former Bengal province. The remaining eastern parts of Bengal joined with Pakistan from 1947 till 1971, when it became Bangladesh . However, the exact origin of the word "Bengal" is uncertain (see Bengal#Name ).

History [ edit ]

west bengal tourism north bengal

The history of West Bengal dates back to 20,000 years. The region that is now West Bengal was part of a number of empires and kingdoms during the past two thousand years, including the Vanga Kingdom, the kingdom of  Magadha . However, the first independent king of Bengal was Shashanka of the 6th century, with his capital at Karnasuvarna (near present-day Baharampur ). After Shashanka, Bengal was ruled by Pala and Sena dynasties. Bengal was later invaded by Rajendra Chola I of the Chola dynasty  between 1021 and 1023.

During the 12th century, Sufi missionaries arrived in Bengal, bringing along with them the message of Islam. Bakhtiar Khilji, a military commander from the  Delhi Sultanate, overran Bengal between 1202 and 1206, initiating the Bengal Sultanate that ran from 13th to 16th century, with the capital being Gour - Pandua . European traders arrived late in the 15th century and established settlements across the Hooghly River.

Bengal was later conquered by the Mughals in 1576. There were several independent Hindu states established in Bengal during the Mughal period like those of Maharaja Pratapaditya of Jessore  and Raja Sitaram Ray of  Bardhaman . The Koch Bihar Kingdom in North Bengal flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Mughal Bengal was ruled by Nawabs in early 17th century, with the first Nawab of Bengal being Murshid Quli Khan.

The Battle of Plassey in 1757 saw the defeat of Siraj ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal. Bengal Presidency was established by 1765, eventually including all British territories north of the Central Provinces (now  Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh ), from the mouths of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra to the Himalayas and the  Punjab region. Calcutta was named the capital of British India in 1772. The Bengal Renaissance and Brahmo Samaj movement had a great impact on the cultural and economic life of Bengal. The failed uprising against the British rule in 1857 resulted in the disbandment of the British East India Company.

Between 1905 and 1911, attempts were made to bifurcate Bengal to curb nationalism, but widespread protest forced the British to call it off. Bengal played a major role in the Indian independence movement, producing some of India's greatest revolutionaries including Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. At the independence of India in 1947, Bengal was partitioned along religious lines, with the western part remained in India as West Bengal while the eastern part joined Pakistan as East Bengal (present-day Bangladesh ). In 1950, the Cooch Behar State merged with West Bengal. In 1955, the former French enclave of  Chandannagar was integrated into West Bengal.

Incidents surrounding the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 caused millions of refugees to influx into West Bengal, most of them Hindus. The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), governed the state for the subsequent three decades, making it the longest-serving democratically elected communist party in the world. Although they are no longer in power since 2011, the Communists' imprint remains powerful on the state, with many streets named after Marx and other local and foreign revolutionary figures.

Remnants of the Shivaliks can be seen on the northern plains , where they are known as the Buxa-Jayanti Hills. The southern part of West Bengal is served by the Kolkata Suburban Railway (commonly referred to as "local trains"). Depending on the route, local trains can be extremely crowded. It is less expensive to travel around by train as compared to private cabs or taxis.

There are three types of rickshaws operating throughout the state: cycle rickshaws, electric rickshaws (locally called totos ) and auto-rickshaws (locally called autos ). Foreigners not familiar with the dialect spoken can enjoy the atmosphere surrounding these events, as fairs organised by local inhabitants, merchants and craftsmen often accompany such gatherings.

Durga Puja (দুর্গাপূজা Durgāpūjā ) is the most celebrated festival in West Bengal. It takes place between September and October, depending on the Hindu lunisolar calendar. There are celebrations in every corner of the state. People are filled with joy and happiness. People distribute sweets and clothes to their loved ones, expressing love and joy. Durga Puja in Kolkata has been listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.

Celebrelated at the day of Diwali, Kali Puja (কালীপূজা Kālīpūjā ) is another major festival in West Bengal, worshipping the Goddess Kali.

Ras Mela (রাসমেলা Rāsmelā ) is one of the most famous and popular yearly fairs in the entire state of West Bengal. Ras Mela is hosted in the occasion of Ras Purnima and the city is fully decorated. Conducted in a huge open ground, it is full of people. You can enjoy food, rides, circuses and many more. There could be some issues entering the fair as the entry points are totally jampacked but once you are in the fair, you can enjoy the rest of your night. There are singers and performers coming from different parts of India. There is an atmosphere of enjoyment and craziness in this time of the year. It's like a winter carnival. Mostly organised in late November or early December. Dates can change each year as it is organised on the basis of a Hindu astronomical event, Ras Purnima or Shakta Rash .

Beside religious festivals, Poila Boishakh (পয়লা বৈশাখ Paẏlā Baiśākh ; Bengali New Year) is also celebrated in West Bengal. However, unlike Bangladesh , the Poila Boishakh celebration takes place in 15 April. Here people from all walks of life participate in various cultural shows, called Boishakhi Mela, wearing the national attire (Punjabi or sari), eating Bengali sweets and wishing everyone a happy Bengali New Year.

Eat [ edit ]

West Bengal is famous for fish preparations and sweet meat but some of the vegetarian dishes are also a speciality. In earlier centuries widows were prohibited from taking anything other than vegetarian food (predominantly they still are but now rules are being broken) and they were principal chefs in large homes. They developed vegetarian dishes extensively.

Bengali cuisine is centred around fish. Machher jhol , fish in curry gravy, is a watery fish curry available everywhere and goes well with rice. However, Bengalis everywhere swear by ilish (aka hilsa, a variant of shad), which is lightly marinaded in mustard and steamed is up there with the best fish dishes in the world.

West Bengal is known to make distinctive sweetmeats from milk products, including rôsogolla (aka rasgulla , cheese balls dipped in a sugary syrup), pantua (a fried variant of rôsogolla ) rôsomalai (aka rasmalai , cheese balls dipped in creamy sweetened milk), chômchôm , kalojam , mishti doi (sweet yoghurt) and several kinds of sôndesh . These sweets are also famous all over India. Pitha , a kind of sweet cake, bread or dimsum are specialties of winter season. Sweets like narkel-naru , til-naru , moa and payesh are prepared during the Lakshmi Puja. Popular street food includes alur chôp , begunī , jhal muri (similar to the bhel puri of Mumbai ) and phuchka (aka golgappa ).

In cities like Kolkata, one can get all types of food from any part of the country. Even one can get Chinese, Thai and continental. In most of the other towns, one can mostly find Bengali hotel and restaurants, though Punjabi, North Indian and South Indian outlets are also available. Mughlai dishes are very popular.

Drink [ edit ]

There are plenty of bars across the state. You might expect nightlife in major cities like Kolkata and Siliguri .

Sleep [ edit ]

Like the rest of India, there are both government and private accommodations. Most of the government lodges are run by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation ( WBTDC or West Bengal Tourism ) and can be booked from the tourism centres in Kolkata and Siliguri .

Stay safe [ edit ]

West Bengal is very safe for foreigners. People are friendly and accept people of different cultures warmly. As a foreigner you might find people staring at you but they are just curious. But if you notice anything objectionable in their behaviour with you, face them boldly and ask for help. People are helpful and you will have them coming to your rescue. You may also call the police. But people on the roads are helpful to foreigners and they can be relied upon.

West Bengal is a very politically active state. You may witness clashes, which most often occur between students of fronts affiliated to the ruling party and the opposition parties. It is better to stay out of the matter and leave the area, as even the police sometimes get involved.

You should take extra precautions while travelling closer to the India–Bangladesh border . There have been cases of illegal migration of people from Bangladesh and drug dealings along the border are fairly common. You might take the assistance of the Border Security Force (BSF) if necessary.

Natural disasters [ edit ]

The southern parts of West Bengal are prone to flooding , since the areas are composed mainly out of silt, a material which is carried down by the rivers and tributaries comprising the Ganges Delta. The rivers would overflow or burst their banks after heavy rainfall. Also, beware of the cyclones occurring at the coastal areas of the state.

The Darjeeling Hills experience heavy rainfall as well, with moderate snowfall in winter. Altitude sickness is another problem in the region.

Respect [ edit ]

Although West Bengal has a lot in common with Bangladesh , don't treat it as a part of Bangladesh.

The Indian rupee is commonly called taka in West Bengal. You must not confuse it with the Bangladeshi taka.

The various respect tips in the Bangladesh article apply here, except that the state is Hindu-majority.

21 Best Offbeat Places in North Bengal – Gateway to the Eastern Himalayas

' src=

Last Updated on April 17, 2024

Having spent the largest part of my life in Kolkata, it’s quite surprising to many that I had not ventured into the northern part of my state, West Bengal till the last couple of years. It’s only in the last couple of years that I frequented this region and discovered the hidden gem that is North Bengal.

In this article I’m going to talk about the best offbeat places in North Bengal which has reasonably good tourist infrastructure for a pleasant holiday.

The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.

A Quick Outline

Dooars Region

Let’s begin with the Dooars – that literally means “gateway”. It loosely refers to the districts of Jalpaiguri and Alipur Duaar, located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The distinct feature of this landscape is the tea estates. Unlike the ones in the hills, these are mostly in flat lands, and you see them wherever you go. Often ignored for the bigger attractions like Darjeeling, or Sikkim, this is one of the most pleasant, offbeat places to travel in India .

Dooars Travel Tips

Best time to Visit Dooars: November to January, winter is the best time to spot wildlife in Dooars. The cool weather under the bright sun makes it perfect for sightseeing during the day. Nights get colder and calls for some bonfire under the starry sky.

Weather in Dooars: Dooars has temperate weather. It is much cooler than Kolkata and the rest of Bengal, but not as chilly as Kalimpong or Darjeeling. That’s why winter and Spring is the best time to visit Dooars.

Commute: You can book car from any Siliguri-based tour operator which charge as per seasonal rates.

Accommodation: In Dooars, only a handful of hotels offer reliable power and water supply, ensuring a comfortable stay. Notably, these establishments are situated in the Chalsa and Batabari areas.

🌟I recommend the Tusker Tea County and Sinclairs Retreat among private properties.

🌟Book early to get accommodations in Batabari tourism property and Murti Lodges owned by West Bengal Government . I can totally recommend Batabari cottages from my experience.

If you want to choose just one out of the numerous safaris in Dooars, then Jaldapara is the top pick. Because of the grasslands and slightly less dense forests, it offers the best wildlife viewings.

Buxa Jayanti, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. This area, comprising the Buxa Tiger Reserve and the quaint village of Jayanti, offers an idyllic escape from city life, immersing you in a world of dense forests, diverse wildlife, and serene river landscapes.

It is located more than 100 km from Murti. While a day trip is possible, I highly recommend staying in Buxa Jayanti region to explore it properly. That’s precisely why I have put it in a separate section instead of clubbing it with Dooars, like most tour operators try to do.

8. Buxa Tiger Reserve

Rugged terrain of the Buxa forest leading to ruins of an old fort.

Buxa Tiger Reserve, a biodiverse haven, is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, barking deers, and peacocks, commonly sighted on the way to Jayanti. The reserve’s dense sub-tropical forests provide a thrilling experience for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

In other seasons, the dry riverbed with its white pebbles creates a stunning contrast against the backdrop of lush greenery and distant hills.

For the adventurous, the trek to Mahakal Cave is a must-do. This sacred cave, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located along the shores of the Jayanti River and requires a trek through the dense forests of Buxa. The prime center of attraction is the Coochbehar Palace, which resembles the Buckingham Palace. Marvel at this classical Western-style edifice, which showcases elegant metal domes and arcaded verandahs, symbolizing the fusion of European and Indian influences.

If you have 2-3 days in Cooch Behar, you can explore not only the heritage sites but also the culturally immersive experiences.

Explore the Madan Mohan Temple, a serene sanctuary constructed between 1885 and 1887. This white temple, with its large dome and multiple arch-shaped entrances, is a peaceful retreat in the bustling town. The temple, dedicated to deities like Madan Mohan and Kali Ma, comes alive during the month-long Rash Mela and Rash Yatra celebrations, typically held between November and December.

Wander around Sagardighi, a large pond in the city center, offering a tranquil setting perfect for introspection. Kalimpong District

Tall Pine trees on both sides of the beautiful road in the Kalimpong District of West Bengal. The clear winter sky provides an alluring backdrop.

Kalimpong District, the newest district in West Bengal, carved out from Darjeeling district in 2017, stands as a pivotal region in North Bengal. Located approximately 65 kilometers from Siliguri, it marks the transition into the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, nestled within the Eastern Himalayas.

The region is distinguished by its strategic position as the last stretch of North Bengal before one venture into the geopolitically significant area of Gorkhaland. Kalimpong town, the district headquarters, is perched at an altitude of about 4,101 feet, offering a mild and temperate climate that attracts visitors year-round.

Check out the breathtakingly beautiful, offbeat places near Kalimpong .

Kalimpong Travel Tips

Best time to Visit Kalimpong: November to December if you enjoy the cold weather, April to May if you are not a fan of winter. However, I love the time in November to December, when chances of rainfall are low, and the clear sky provides amazing views of distant peaks.

Weather in Kalimpong: Kalimpong has cool weather throughout the year. So, it makes a great summer getaway destination .

Commute in Kalimpong: You can book car from any Siliguri-based tour operator; however, it is better to reach Kalimpong and hire a cab from local travel agency. There are restrictions to parking in areas like Kalimpong market and some offbeat destinations in the district for vehicles hired from outside Kalimpong.

Accommodation: I love staying in Deolo Hills as it provides great views of Kanchenjunga. But it tends to get really cold here in the winter. If you don’t like the chills, you can choose staying in lower altitude like Kalimpong town.

I highly recommend homestays in Charkhole and Lolegaon for an offbeat experience. My Top picks are Yuru Retreat in Deolo Hills, Mayfair Resort and Spa – a premium luxury resort in Kalimpong town.

Never leave without travel health insurance. Cover your family and yourself on international trips with Visitors’ Coverage .

Lolegaon and Charkhole are two of the most beautiful offbeat places to visit near Kalimpong.

The Canopy Walk in Lolegaon, a hanging footbridge through the treetops, is a unique attraction, providing a different perspective of the forest. Unfortunately, it is closed now, but there’s so much more to enjoy in this offbeat place in North Bengal.

The Lolegaon eco park is a perfect place for a family retreat, which, on a clear day treats you with the lovely views of Kanchenjunga. A day trip to Charkhole will take you to a hidden hamlet located 26km from Lolegaon and 15 km from Lava.

The governor's bunglow which has now been turned into a hotel inside the Delo park at Dareeling . The horses are waiting for tourists.

Perched at an altitude of approximately 5,500 feet, Deolo Hills offers one of the most picturesque landscapes in North Bengal. Located about 6 kilometers from the Kalimpong town, Deolo Hills is relatively serene, tucked away from the crowd of the town and market area.

You might have noticed me mentioning Kanchenjunga a lot in this article. It is the third highest peak in the world, and Deolo Hills is one of the best viewpoints of Kanchenjunga from the Indian side .

At the center of Deolo hills is the Deolo Park, a colonial-era landscaped park that used to the home of the governor. You can spend hours of quality family-time in the park, enjoying sunset walks, flower gardens, horse riding and children’s park.

Another top attraction here is the paragliding camp. There are many certified paragliding centers where you can safely book the adventure.

Very close to Deolo Hills, there’s the Kalimpong Science City, Buddha Park and Hanuman Park – all of which offer spectacular views of the region. Science City is my favorite spot in Kalimpong besides Delo Park.

How to Reach: Deolo Hill is about 70 km from Siliguri and is easily accessible by road. The drive offers picturesque views of the Himalayan range and the Teesta River.

14. Icchegaon

Large trees in the mountains against the backdrop of clear winter sky make Icchegaon charming

The village’s strategic location provides breathtaking panoramic views, especially at sunrise and sunset, when the sky and the mountain peaks are bathed in golden hues. Short hikes and nature-walks around the village are perfect for exploring the area’s flora and fauna. Birdwatching is another popular activity, with the region being home to a variety of bird species.

Icchegaon’s culture is deeply rooted in its rural and traditional lifestyle. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the local customs and way of life, which is a blend of Nepali and Lepcha influences. The warmth and hospitality of the villagers add to the charm of this destination.

Sampling these fresh and organic products is a delightful experience for visitors. The village also offers traditional handicrafts and handloom products, showcasing the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

Accommodation in Icche gaon is primarily in the form of homestays, which provide a cozy and homely atmosphere. These homestays, such as the Pine View Homestay , offer basic yet comfortable amenities, ensuring a pleasant stay amidst the serene environment.

Buddha Statue at a hairpin belt with rolling tea gardens of Ambiok all around. Me in blue top standing with my little one in blue-yellow hoodie.

As we drove towards Lava from Dooars, a scenic viewpoint with a Buddha Statue at a hairpin belt caught our attention. What is this place, I wondered, but not for too long. Because there stood a photo-op “I Love Ambiok” right beside the gate of the tiny Buddha Park.

Ambiok is not just a viewpoint, but a perfect offbeat retreat in Kalimpong. The area around Ambiok is a tapestry of natural beauty, offering more than just a visual treat. It’s a gateway to exploring the lesser-known facets of the Kalimpong District, with scenic tourist spots that beckon travelers seeking solace and adventure alike.

The rolling hills of Ambiok are covered in lush green tea plantations where you can stroll as you please. A little further is the Chel Khola river that flows through the tea plantations. The best views of the river is seen from the Hanuman temple at Gorubathan.

16. Rishyap

Tall pine trees of Rishop at 8500 feet altitude

Rishyap, a quaint village nestled in the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, offers a pristine getaway for those seeking solace amidst nature’s untouched beauty.

Perched at an altitude of about 8,500 feet, Rishyap offers a serene environment where the only sounds are the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. The village is accessible via a winding road through dense forests, adding to the charm and adventure of reaching this secluded spot.

One of the highlights of Rishyap is the opportunity for trekking and exploring the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley National Park. The park, a sanctuary for countless species of flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda, offers trails that range from easy walks to challenging hikes. For the more adventurous, the trek to Tiffin Dara is a must. This viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of the Himalayan ranges, with stunning sunrises and sunsets that are truly mesmerizing.

Darjeeling Region

Darjeeling District, renowned for its sprawling tea gardens and breathtaking views of the Himalayas, is a significant region in North Bengal, India. It is located approximately 65 kilometers from Siliguri, serving as a major tourist destination known for its cultural diversity, historical significance, and natural beauty. The district’s elevation, which ranges from the plains to the towering heights of the Himalayas, contributes to its unique climate and rich biodiversity, making it ideal for tea cultivation and a haven for nature enthusiasts.

As soon as you enter the district you are greeted with the message on the signboard “You are in the Gorkhaland Territory”. This region, though a part of the state of West Bengal, is partially self-governed owing to its distinct cultural identity. The most commonly spoken language in this region is Nepalese.

17. Tinchuley

Me with my little one in winter clothing at the tea gardens of Tinchuley. The snow-covered Kanchenjunga visible at the horizon

Tinchuley stands as a hidden jewel nestled within the ethereal landscapes of North Bengal, offering a serene escape to nature enthusiasts and peace seekers. This quaint hamlet, whose name translates to ‘three chullas’ (or ovens), is aptly named for the three prominent hilltops that resemble the shape of traditional ovens.

Located just about 32 kilometers from Darjeeling and in close proximity to both Kalimpong and Siliguri, Tinchuley offers a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life, making it an ideal destination for those in search of peace and natural beauty.

I visited it on my first trip to Darjeeling when I skipped all the major tourist spots of Darjeeling town due to the excessive crowd and traffic conjestion.I headed straight to the countryside of the Darjiling district and didn’t regret.

The Tinchuley tea gardens are open to tourists unlike the famous Happy Valley tea estate of Darjeeling town. From here you can see the majestic Kanchenjunga on a clear day. On an overcast day, there is a dreamlike mystic charm in the surroundings. Among its most notable attractions is the Tinchuley Monastery, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of the region and a chance to experience the tranquility of Buddhist practices.

Moreover, Tinchuley’s vicinity to other tourist spots like the Gumbadara viewpoint, with its striking views of the Teesta River, and the picturesque orange orchards, add to the charm of visiting this serene hamlet

How to Reach: Located roughly 80 km from Siliguri, Tinchuley is accessible by road. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes, including tea gardens and mountainous terrain.

18. Kurseong

Sunset at Kurseong Tea Estates

Kurseong, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor Darjeeling, is a hidden gem in North Bengal. Known as the ‘Land of White Orchids’, Kurseong offers a serene and less crowded alternative to the bustling hill stations. Its mild climate throughout the year makes it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the hills.

This charming town is dotted with beautiful tea gardens like Makaibari and Castleton, offering breathtaking views and insights into the tea production process. Visitors can take guided tours of the tea estates and indulge in tea tasting sessions. The Eagle’s Craig viewpoint provides panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, including the majestic Kanchenjunga on a clear day.

Kurseong is also home to several historical and cultural sites. The Dow Hill area, with its haunted forest and century-old Victoria Boys School, adds a touch of mystery to the town. The Giddapahar Seti Mata Temple and Ambotia Shiva Mandir offer spiritual solace amidst scenic settings.

For those looking to savor local flavors, Kurseong has a range of cafes and restaurants that offer a mix of local, Indian, and international cuisine. Cochrane Place is popular for its colonial ambiance and delicious food, while Margaret’s Deck offers a unique tea lounge experience with stunning views. The town also has a variety of eateries serving traditional Nepali and Tibetan dishes, allowing visitors to explore the local culinary landscape.

19. Lamahatta

Huge trees of Lamahatta Eco Park and me sitting there with my little one.

Lamahatta is an eco-tourism village known for its serene pine forests, walking trails, and a tranquil pond. The area’s natural beauty and peaceful ambiance make it an ideal spot for relaxation and nature exploration.

The Lamahatta eco park is the center of attraction – the perfect retreat for families. But besides enjoying this beautiful garden, you can also trek through the pine forests to the lake at the top of the hill. There are some good places to eat and shop for handicrafts in Lamahatta.

How to Reach: Around 80 km from Siliguri, Lamahatta is reachable by road. The journey offers scenic views of the lush forests and tea gardens.

Stunning views of Takdah Orchid center with yellow flowers blooming against the green house in the backdrop

This hidden gem, cloaked in mists and surrounded by lush tea gardens, is approximately 28 kilometers from Darjeeling town and about 45 kilometers from Kalimpong, making it an accessible yet secluded getaway for those traversing North Bengal’s picturesque landscapes

Significant for its colonial-era bungalows and sprawling tea estates, Takdah presents a step back in time with its old-world charm. The region was once a favored destination for British officials seeking respite from the Indian summer, and today, these bungalows have been repurposed into cozy homestays, offering visitors a taste of historical luxury amidst nature’s bounty.

The prime center of attraction in Takdah is the Orchid Center which is home to some of the most exotic variety of Himalayan flowers. You can also enjoy walking in the mystic Pine forests in Takdah.

How to Reach: Takdah is approximately 28 km from Darjeeling town and can be reached by road. The drive through the winding mountain roads is an experience in itself.

21. In and Around Mirik

My excited toddler in neon green t-shirt enjoying in the huge part of Mirik Lake.

Nestled amidst the verdant hills of North Bengal, Mirik is renowned for its serene lake, lush tea gardens, and the tranquil beauty that encapsulates the region. With Mirik Lake and the verdant park built around it, Mirik can no longer be called “offbeat”. It is in fact the most famous day trip destination from Darjeeling. It is the second most popular tourist spot in the Darjiling district.

However, the areas surrounding Mirik are dotted with offbeat gems that beckon the intrepid traveler seeking paths less trodden. Exploring these places offers a unique glimpse into the serene beauty and cultural richness of the region, making for an unforgettable journey beyond the well-known attractions of Mirik.

Just a short drive from Mirik, the enchanting village of Soureni stands as a testament to the region’s natural beauty and agricultural bounty. Known for its vibrant tea gardens that stretch as far as the eye can see, Soureni provides a peaceful retreat and an insider’s look into the tea-producing culture of the Darjeeling district.

Further off the beaten path, Bunkulung , or Bungkulung, offers an immersive experience into rural life amidst the mountains. This agricultural village, nestled along the banks of the Balason River, is gaining popularity for its community-based tourism initiatives. Visitors can engage in agricultural activities, enjoy organic meals, and take part in river camping, making it a perfect spot for those looking to connect with nature and local traditions.

Another hidden treasure near Mirik is the orange orchards of Rangbhang . This area comes alive with hues of orange during the harvest season, offering a picturesque setting for leisurely walks and picnics. The orchards also provide a unique opportunity to learn about the local agricultural practices and the significance of orange farming to the region’s economy.

For the more adventurous souls, the trek to Phuguri Tea Estate presents an exhilarating challenge. This offbeat trek through dense forests and along undulating tea gardens offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, culminating in a visit to one of the highest tea estates in the region, where one can savor a fresh brew straight from the source.

Well, that’s a wrap to my list of top offbeat destinations in North Bengal. The entire region is fairly unexplored, with Darjeeling stealing all the limelight. You can truly experience the local culture, the warmth of the hosts and the beauty of nature in this part of India. And all that in a less commercial and affordable way.

Darjeeling, 2 others Lok Sabha seats in North Bengal to go to polls in Phase 2

The polling for darjeeling, balurghat, and raiganj will decide the electoral fate of two sitting bjp mps, including bjp state president sukanta majumdar, who is seeking re-election from the balurghat seat..

  • Three Lok Sabha constituencies in northern West Bengal go for polls in second phase
  • Polling for Darjeeling, Balurghat, and Raiganj will decide electoral fate of two sitting BJP MPs
  • A total of 51,17,955 voters are eligible to vote across 5,298 polling stations

Three Lok Sabha constituencies in the northern part of West Bengal, including the strategically important Darjeeling seat, will go to polls in the second phase of elections on Friday.

The polling for Darjeeling, Balurghat, and Raiganj will decide the electoral fate of two sitting BJP MPs, including BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, who is seeking re-election from the Balurghat seat. Majumdar is up against veteran TMC leader and Minister Biplab Mitra.

Amidst a new political alignment, Darjeeling hills are gearing up for another election as the long-pending demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland gains focus, with electoral fortunes hinging on promises of a political solution to the demand.

The Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, bordering Nepal, also houses the strategically important Chicken’s Neck or Siliguri corridor connecting the northeastern states with mainland India.

The picturesque Darjeeling, often referred to as the queen of the hills and known for its tea, timber and tourism industries, is up for a four-cornered contest.

Sitting BJP MP Raju Bista is contesting against party MLA from Kurseong, Bishnu Prasad Sharma, who is running as an independent after his demand to field a "Bhumiputra" was not accepted by the BJP leadership.

Bista, supported by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) and the Bimal Gurung faction of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), aims for a second term.

Bista is an exception who has been repeated as the BJP candidate from the hills, as its previous MPs Jaswant Singh and S S Ahluwalia in 2009 and 2014 had only a single tenure.

Unlike previous elections when the BJP with the support of GJM had a free run in the hills, Bista is up against formidable opposition as Congress, which has joined hands with the Hamro Party, has fielded Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh’s Munish Tamang, who is also supported by the CPI (M).

The TMC has nominated Gopal Lama, supported by Anit Thapa’s Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), which controls the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).

Bista won the seat in 2019 by a margin of 4.5 lakh votes.

With the Lok Sabha polls approaching, the issue of a permanent political solution (PPS) has gained momentum. BJP promises a permanent political solution within the next five years.

The Bimal Gurung-led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which switched alliances from the TMC, issued a 'final ultimatum' to the saffron camp, demanding a resolution to the hill problem as a pre-condition for their support in the elections.

In the 2021 assembly polls, the BJP had bagged six seats whereas the TMC had bagged just one in the Lok Sabha constituency.

In Raiganj, BJP has nominated Kartick Paul to compete against TMC's Krishna Kalyani, who was a BJP MLA who had switched over to the TMC.

The constituency, once known as a Congress stronghold and backyard of the late former union minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, will witness a three-cornered contest with Left-Congress alliance candidate Ali Imran Ramz also known as Victor.

In the previous election, BJP's Debasree Chaudhuri had bagged the seat by defeating TMC’s Kanaia Lal Agarwal by a margin of over 60,000 votes.

In Balurgat Lok Sabha seat in Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district, a keen and closely fought electoral contest awaits where BJP state president Majumdar seeks re-election and is up against a formidable rival in TMC candidate Biplab Mitra, a brilliant organiser, and presently a member of the TMC ministry.

Sukanta Majumdar, who made his electoral debut in 2019, had secured 5,39,317 votes, establishing a lead of 33,293 votes and wresting the seat from TMC’s Arpita Ghosh.

Balurghat, once a stronghold of Left Front constituent RSP, which won the seat consecutively from 1984 to 2009, is also pitted for a three-cornered contest with Left-Congress alliance candidate Joydep Siddhanta in the fray.

In 2021 assembly polls, out of the seven assembly segments in the Balurghat constituency, four were won by the TMC and three by the BJP.

A total of 51,17,955 voters - 26,07,389 men, 25,10,356 women, and 210 third-gender individuals - are eligible to vote across 5,298 polling stations. Of the 47 candidates, three are women.

The Election Commission of India stated that 98% of the polling stations in the three Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal are "critical". Central forces will be deployed at all polling stations in these seats.

Mamata Banerjee's Bengal government moves Supreme Court against CBI probe in Sandeshkhali

A 10-member team of the cbi visited sandeshkhali in west bengal's north 24 parganas district to probe alleged crimes against women and land-grabbing, an official said..

Nivedita Dash

The court directed the CBI to investigate the allegations and submit a comprehensive report to it. Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were attacked on January 5 by a mob when they went to Sandeshkhali to search the premises of now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh in connection with alleged ration distribution scam case.

The Supreme Court had on April 15 granted two weeks to the Lok Sabha Secretariat and others to file their replies to a plea moved by top bureaucrats from West Bengal against their summoning by the privileges committee of the Lower House of Parliament. They were summoned by the Committee of Privileges of the Lok Sabha over a complaint of "misconduct" filed against them by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sukanta Majumdar when he was trying to visit violence-hit Sandeshkhali, a village in North 24 Parganas district of the state.

On February 19, the top court stayed the notices issued by the privileges committee to the West Bengal chief secretary, director general of police (DGP) and others.

West Bengal Election 2024 Phase 1 Voting LIVE: PM Modi addressed public meetings in Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar while TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and party leader Abhishek Banerjee also held several rallies and roadshows in these places

Sporadic incidents of violence marred the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Bengal’s three parliamentary constituencies, with a 77% voter turnout till 5 pm and several injuries reported as TMC and BJP workers clashed mostly in the violence-prone Cooch Behar seat.

The TMC and BJP lodged around 100 and 50 complaints respectively, which are related to poll violence, voter intimidation, and assaults on poll agents in the initial hours of polling, as claimed by sources from both parties. Most complaints originated from Cooch Behar.

“We have received a few complaints and we are looking into them. However, we have no reports of any major incidents of violence so far. The polling has been peaceful,” a senior officer from the CEO’s office said.

The CEO’s office received approximately 500 complaints from various parties till 2pm, with most of the complaints swiftly resolved.

According to officials, Cooch Behar recorded a 77.38 per cent turnout till 5pm, while Alipurduars and Jalpaiguri recorded 75.54 and 79.33 per cent, respectively.

Voting commenced at 7 am and concluded at 6 pm. Sources suggest the turnout may increase further as long queues were seen outside polling booths.

All three seats are reserved: Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri for SCs, and Alipurduars for STs. These seats were won by the BJP in 2019.

During the last Lok Sabha polls, the turnout in Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduars was 84, 86, and 83 per cent, respectively.

A total of 37 candidates, including Union Minister and BJP leader Nisith Pramanik (Cooch Behar), are contesting in the three constituencies.

  • The poll panel has decided to deploy 2,454 state police personnel alongside 63 companies of central forces in Alipurduar, officials said.
  • There will also be 75 companies of central forces and 3,077 state police in Jalpaiguri.
  • The longstanding rivalry between Pramanik and TMC’s Dinhata MLA and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha seems to have contributed to the palpable tension in Cooch Behar over the elections.
  • The Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) or the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel will be deployed there for the April 19 polls, an EC official has said.
  • This comes in view of the death of four persons in a firing allegedly by CISF personnel at a booth in Sitalkuchi during the 2021 assembly polls, following which the Election Commission has decided not to deploy any personnel of that force there.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed public meetings in Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar while TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and the party’s number two Abhishek Banerjee also held several rallies and roadshows in these places.
  • All three constituencies were won by the BJP in the 2019 general elections. In the 2021 assembly polls, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar remained BJP’s stronghold with the party winning five of seven segments in the first and six in the second constituency, but in Jalpaiguri, the TMC had the upper hand, winning five and the saffron party managed to win two.
  • A 42-year-old CRPF jawan fell unconscious while on duty at a polling station in Cooch Behar’s Mathabhanga. On being taken to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him dead. His body has been sent for post-mortem.
