This urethane ball comes in with a slightly cheaper RRP than most premium offerings. The Wilson Staff Tour FG X golf ball is also noticeably longer than the softer original FG Tour. The drawback to this is that it didn?t feel as soft off the putter face compared to the standard FG Tour. PGA Pro verdict The Wilson Staff FG Tour X is a great golf ball from the tee and around the green. I liked the feel off the putter which was slightly harder than expected, but helped me to be positive with putts. I was also able to shape my long shots easily. Golf Monthly Top 25 Coach John Jacobs

Review: Wilson Staff FG TourX Golf Balls

wilson staff fg tour x golf balls

I have been a Wilson ball fans since back in the day.  I grew up playing Wilson clubs and using Wilson golf balls.  (It probably helped that my father loved their products.)  It has been great to see the renewal of Wilson Staff the last few years with products like the Wilson Duo Optix .  Everything from their new clubs, to their touring pros and yes even their golf balls.  I played a sample pack of the FG Tour balls this spring and really like them.  They were soft, spun nicely and really durable, but I didn’t end up getting any more because the local golf shop didn’t stock them.  But when I got the opportunity to review the Wilson FG Tour X golf ball, I jumped on it. (Hopefully these will be stocked around town)

The first thing that is immediately noticeable with either version of the FG Tour ball is that the urethane cover is different.  It is softer and sticker than other brands.  Even in the X it is still softer than most other brands.  This is a great move in my opinion.  So many lower spin, longer balls get too firm.  Not the Wilson FG Tour X ball.  It is that combination of X qualities, but still with a soft cover.

The X qualities are very good too.  It is long off the tee.  I’ve played multiple rounds now and I would say it is as long as any ball on the market.  It has no problem keeping up.  From tee to green it is what you would expect, long, mid launch with mid/low spin.  Around the green it seemed to spin a little more than most X version and is noticeably softer off the putter.

I was also impressed with how durable these were.  I expected the soft cover to get torn up, but it didn’t.  It survived many holes, even a couple rounds (until I lost it).

The only thing I noticed that is different about this ball is that soft cover as I mentioned is a little tacky.  If you roll it in your hand you can tell instantly that it is different.  It is almost sticky.  I’m not sure if that is the paint they use or their urethane compound, because both the FG Tour and FG Tour X are like that.  I only noticed a problem one time.  When I made a less than pure putter stroke, and the ball skidded off the putter instead of a clean roll, the tackiness seemed to grip and the ball stopped well short of what it should have.  Now skidding is never a good thing in putting anyways, but you will note that if your greens are little grabby, these will be slower than other balls.  At the same time this stickiness probably made it check up a little better on pitch shots, so it is a compromise of what will work best for your game. I personally had great results with this ball.

I think Wilson has a winner.  A soft, durable, yet long and lower spin premium ball.  It is a little bit different than the other bands out there, so I think the Wilson twist on the X style ball is very well done.  So if you are looking for X performance with a little softer feel, get the Wilson FG Tour X ball.

Wilson Staff FG Tour Golf Ball Review

Golf Pride Reverse Taper Putter Grip

50 Words or Less

The lowest compression tour ball on the market.  Soft feel with strong performance in every facet of the game.

Introduction

I make little secret of my disdain for the Golf Digest Hot List, but they do occasionally get things right.  One example of this is that they awarded a gold to the latest incarnation of the Wilson Staff FG Tour golf ball.

Though Wilson Staff has flown under the radar in terms of tour level golf balls, they’ve been making some of the best for the last few years.  This latest version continues in that tradition, minus the “under the radar” part.

With a compression rating of only 70, the Wilson Staff FG Tour ball is one of the softest tour balls that you’ll ever feel.  This is particularly noticeable in the long game, where the ball has more of that “compress and explode” feel than other tour balls.  With the putter,  the FG Tour is still very soft, but it avoids the pitfall of being a marshmallow on longer putts.  Short putts have just a soft “thud,” but longer putts have a slightly firmer click that I found helpful for distance control.

With its lower compression, I expected that the FG Tour would be a higher spinning golf ball in the long game, but I was proven incorrect.  Off the driver, the spin rates place it right in the middle of the pack for tour balls and the ball speed is very good.

The most noticeable characteristic on the course was that the ball played very well in the wind.  We’re having a fairly windy spring here in Chicago, but I didn’t need to give the wind any extra consideration with this ball.  The FG Tour held its lines well and flew on a strong trajectory into the breeze.

Wilson Staff FG Tour Golf Ball (1)

The Wilson Staff FG Tour is equally impressive in the short game.  As I mentioned, the feel of this ball is very helpful in terms of gauging distance on longer putts – it’s just firm enough that you don’t feel like you need to slam it to get it to the hole.

Around the green, the FG Tour provides plenty of spin .  Launch monitor testing confirmed my on-course impression that this ball is slightly above average for a tour ball when it comes to spin on full and half wedge shots.

Who This Ball is For

Good players who want a tour-level ball with softer feel.

Wilson Staff FG Tour Golf Ball (5)

If you want all the best attributes of a tour level ball, but don’t feel compelled to play the same ball that everyone else does, I’d recommend giving the Wilson Staff FG Tour serious consideration.  It delivers in all facets of the game and gives you some of the softest feel of any tour ball on the market.

The FG tour ball rips through the wind and grabs the green like and old balata ball back in the day. Awesome ball.

Wilson Staff FG Tour X: All the Right Moves

wilson fg x 1

Ball tested: Wilson Staff FG Tour X

Category: Tour/Advanced/Performance

Specs: Construction – Three-piece; Cover – Urethane; Core – Rubber; Dimples – 312

Price as tested (new): $39.99 per dozen

Ball notes: Introduced in 2011 to complement Wilson’s FG Tour , the FG Tour X promises a slightly firmer feel through a higher compression core (93 vs. the FG Tour’s 75), with similar distance and spin characteristics. Both models earned silver medal status on Golf Digest’s 2013 equipment Hot List.

Compression: High

Like its mate, the Tour FG X is designed to deliver low-spin shots with the long clubs (driver, hybrids, long irons), high spin with short irons and wedges, and top-notch greenside control.

wilson fg x 3

Sound and feel: The FG Tour X is definitely firmer than the FG Tour, but comparable to other balls in the “tour” category. In other words, it’s plenty soft. Feel players will appreciate its cushiony feedback, which provides a heightened sense of control.

Off the tee: While shorter hitters (swing speeds in the 80-90 mph range) may have trouble getting maximum length with this ball, that generally holds true for all tour models. If you can approach 100 mph or more with the driver, you’ll find the FG Tour X delivers excellent distance. We did not detect any ballooning into the wind, nor excessive sidespin.

From the fairway / rough: Again, we got great yardage from the FG Tour X from long range (3-wood, 4-hybrid, 4-iron), without shots getting away after landing. Short irons and wedge shots came down with a tight spin, stopping dead in their tracks when struck well.

Around the green: If you’ve tried the Wilson FG Tour and found it a bit too soft (if such a thing is possible), the Tour X may hit your sweet spot. It’s soft, all right, just not as “mushy” as its sibling. Happily, nothing is lost in performance. The Tour X has ample sticking power on chips and bunker shots. Feels nice and tracks well on putts too.

Bottom line: Wilson’s got another winner in the FG Tour X. It’s long, it’s soft, it’s workable and it’s controllable around the greens. It’s also priced a little lower than many competitors’ tour offerings, which makes it a definite must-try.

Wilson Staff FG Tour Golf Balls 2013 Review

This three-piece is covered in a thin, soft veneer of urethane to deliver maximum control. Wilson say this is a premium Tour ball in everything but price, and it’s hard to disagree. The FG Tour is so soft it feels more like an old balata ball – but...

Review: Wilson Staff FG Tour ball

Wilson Staff says it's the softest urethane ball on the market, but do we agree?

wilson staff fg tour x golf balls

GOLFMAGIC was afforded the opportunity of teeing up with the brand new Wilson Staff FG Tour ball in Turkey earlier this month.

The new 4-piece FG Tour ball is designed for low handicap players who crave a soft-feeling golf ball that still offers that Tour quality feel. I re-phrase. Wilson Staff says this new ball is the "softest urethane ball" available on the market today.

Some statement, but for £35 per dozen and some £10 cheaper than many better player golf balls, Wilson instantly had my attention - especially as I was already a fan of the previous FG Tour X ball of 2013.

The first thing that immediately stands out with this new 70-compression FG Tour model (most competitive urethane balls range between 89 and 107) is its new 318 dimple pattern. It felt a little softer and tackier than many other branded golf balls I've held in the palm of my hand this year.

There's a neat branded logo that stands out at the front and again at the side, a little like the new Srixon AD333 Tour ball. I love a good logo, especially when lining up with confidence on the tee and over a putt. There's also a lovely paint combination on offer that just looks like it's going to stand the test of time.

When it comes to feel with the wedges, this ball ticks all the right boxes. Wedge spin with a 52-degree wedge was hitting around the 9,200 RPM mark which is a 500 RPM improvement on the FG Tour X ball (8800 RPM) I tested last year. Out on the course, balls felt like they were nipping off the clubface with an ideal compressed feel. Feel players will very much appreciate the cushioned feedback of the soft, cast urethane cover. I would go as far as to say this ball has the feel of a Titleist Pro V1x - without doubt the standout urethane golf ball in the game today - when it comes to the scoring clubs.

Driver spin was very much similar to the FG Tour X ball I tested last year - a 90 compression golf ball - with drives running out to around my average of 265 yards with a driver spin reaching around the 2,750 RPM mark, again about average for me.

This ball felt easy enough to work off the tee and easy to control out the greenside rough. I wouldn't say I had my ball under complete control on every occasion out the bunkers but that's more than likely because I'm not the best trap player. Several shots, when the wind got up and into my face, travelled on a very stable, penetrating flight trajectory.

Putting from long range was probably the only slight negative as I felt the ball tended to stop short of where it should have due to the tackiness of the ball. When I made a less than pure stroke with the putter, the ball skidded off the face a little.

Durability-wise, I used one ball and still had one ball in play at the end of the round with very few scuff marks when it placing it back in the ball pocket. I even played one shot off a cart path, testament to the quality of this ball.

FG Tour is a low spinning ball that runs for miles off the tee with very strong wedge spin. It offers the best of both worlds and for £35 per dozen, it represents what I consider the best value premium golf ball on the market in 2014.

I've always been a fan of Wilson Staff balls and the new FG Tour model only strengthens that notion.

The softest ball on the market? Well it's a difficult one to call but I'd say Wilson Staff isn't too far wrong. It's certainly one of the softer new urethane balls I've tested this year.

Red Bull X-Fighters Moscow Preview

wilson staff fg tour x golf balls

The Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour winds its way from the deserts of Egypt to the cobbled streets of Red Square for Saturday's showdown in Moscow. Another iconic location awaits, with the pyramids of Giza having been traded for the onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral as the backdrop of the Dane Herron-built course.

Egypt brought some surprises to the Tour, not the least of which being the win by Adam Jones . Jones had been possibly the most vocal critic of the judges at the previous stop in Mexico City, taking issue with amount that showmanship factored into their results. But he obviously took the criteria to heart at the second stop, adding a variety of crowd-pleasing antics to his deep bag of skills.

Of course there was also plenty of controversy following Mr. Jones. The new eight-jump format for the two-landing course was an exercise in confusion for all concerned. In his bout against New Zealand's Levi Sherwood, Jones took one less jump, but was considered by the judges to be strong enough in the categories he won, regardless of the number of jumps achieved. In the semi-final match-up against Nate Adams , Jones took his time, gooning for the crowd on each jump and in the end effectively blocked Adams from taking his full schedule of jumps. Since Adams usually leaves some of his bigger tricks for the end of the run and since Jones took one more jump before time ran out, this was enough to knock the "King of Deft" out of the competition.

Now we move on to Moscow, where Jones and Mexico winner Andre Villa will certainly have their hands full. The course in Moscow is full dirt freestyle, built on the slope of Vassilyevsky, behind the world famous cathedral. Though not a Texas-size course, there are certainly enough challenges to separate the men from the boys.

Moscow sees the return of three riders who were missing from the last stop in Egypt: Blake 'Bilko' Williams , Mat Rebeaud and Dany Torres . Bilko has yet to match the performance that won him the gold medal at X Games last August, but after a very frustrating result in Mexico due to mechanical problems at altitude, you can bet that he'll be gunning for the top spot and nothing else. He is one of only two riders in the field who have the 360 in their arsenal, the other being Adams. Unlike Adams, however, Bilko really knows how to work the crowd -- something Jones proved is can be the deciding factor when going head-to-head with Adams.

Dany Torres injured his wrist at the start of the season in Costa Rica and was never really ready for the rigors of competition in Mexico City. He smartly elected to get the surgery and sit out Egypt, readying for a comeback in Moscow. There's still enough time for Torres to have a shot at the X Fighters overall title and, with a fresh X Games invite in his pocket, this could be a breakout year for Torres. The real question is whether or not his wrist is ready for the pounding of Moscow's big track?

But the biggest news in Russia has to be the return of Mat Rebeaud to competition. Rebeaud suffered a horrendous crash while practicing for Mexico City, breaking an arm and puncturing a lung. There was some intention to ride in Egypt, but the Rebeaud camp realized that his arm would not have been truly ready for the high level of competition at a Red Bull X-Fighters event, so this becomes his first step out for 2010.

Rebeaud has a determination that is hard to rival and though it will be a challenge (though not mathematically impossible) for him to take the Tour Title with two missed events, you can bet he intends to claim victory at every future stop. In doing so, he just might act as spoiler to everyone else's championship hopes.

Speaking of the championship: Villa has a slim thirty-five point lead over Adams, with the newly-crowned Adam Jones in third place. Five points behind Jones is Australian Robbie Maddison, who is also a threat to win at any major event. It is a 60-point spread between those top four contenders with one hundred points going to each tour winner. Villa better start looking over his shoulder as this real competition breathes down his neck. A slip in qualifying or an early round could cost him the Tour lead and no one is going to let him just walk into the Moscow night with an even stronger grasp on the overall standings.
