Collin Morikawa continues the hoodie revolution (and plays pretty well, too)

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Are you sick of hearing about hoodies in professional golf? Have you become weary with the Great Hoodie Debate, whether it involves Tyrrell Hatton or Rory McIlroy or Harold Varner III or the Golf Digest editors themselves? If so, you may actually be happy at the news that in his second round at the RBC Heritage, Collin Morikawa hoodie'd up with a slick, gray Adidas number:

The reason you might be happy is that by continuing to normalize the hoodie, Morikawa has sped us closer to the day when wearing one won't be that big of a deal. Imagine: A golfer wears a hoodie, and it inspires no comment! In fact, a simple Twitter search for "Morikawa hoodie" on Friday reveals mostly positive comments . If you want a historical analogy, perhaps this is kind of like when the Pope John Paul II spoke out in favor of the Polish solidarity movement; he wasn't the first, but his blessing carried a whole lot of weight.

Too much? Probably. Or definitely. In any case, there was also some golf played on Friday, and along with rocking the hoodie with aplomb, Morikawa was pretty good on the course, too. The putter wasn't quite as hot as it had been in his opening-round 65, but once again he was all over the pins and finished with a bogey-free 68 to sit two shots out of second place (and seven shots behind leader Stewart Cink).

MORE: Billy Horschel says arm-lock putting method should be banned

"Everything felt good," Morikawa said afterward. "Just was probably about a foot short on speed all day. Could have had five, six more birdies out there. It happens, and I was glad to have a bogey-free round."

Despite the slight mis-calibration on the greens, Morikawa said that his putting—often considered the weakest part of his game—has felt great lately, and his confidence was obvious on Thursday. But Harbour Town is known as a course that rewards accurate driving and great iron play, so it's no surprise to see a player like him near the top of the leader board. When asked whether he licks his chops especially at a tournament like this, Morikawa demurred … at first.

"To be honest, I haven't showed up to a course and been afraid, thinking I couldn't win," he said. "If I have, then we've got a problem and I've got to figure out what I need to do. But when you show up to a course like this that has smaller greens, yes, it gives you a little boost of confidence knowing that you can get a little advantage on some other guys."

As for the hoodie, he laughed when asked if he considered himself the latest fighter in a sartorial revolution, but was quick to defend the souped-up sweater when asked if it was at all cumbersome.

"It's fine," he said, at which point he began to tug on the drawstrings. "We got two little straps right here. I should probably just cut them off or take it out. So I tuck it in. I don't mind it. It's comfy, right? Look at the people out here. They're wearing T-shirts and whatnot, so … "

Exactly. More hoodies brings golf closer and closer to becoming the people's game … maybe. Morikawa pointed to Hatton, who won with a hoodie at the BMW PGA Championship in 2020, as the man who "started something." But though he's not the original pioneer, history will remember him as one of the original adopters—a select group that braved the hostile standards of the time to advance the cause of the mighty hoodie.

The Eight Most Stylish Tour Pros of 2021

  • Author: Janice Ferguson

Fashion and style may be the last things on our minds while heading out for a round of golf. We’re probably more mindful, and concerned, about hooks, slices and missing three-foot putts. But whether we realize it or not, being comfortable and confident both with our swing and our swagger can actually be beneficial to our game. The expression, "Look good, feel good, play good,” didn’t come about without having some merit.

There is however, a well defined distinction between fashion and style . Fashion is the clothes, style is the wearer. Fashion comes and goes, style is forever. Fashion changes, style evolves.

Translate that to professional golf — which has the unusual position of being a sport without uniforms — and we think you’ll agree the inaugural list of Most Stylish Tour Pros of 2021 are as diverse as their golf swings, yet they are all proof it’s not what you wear but how you wear it.

Since style is an expression of individualism, we asked each pro to describe their own sense of style, if they have a go-to look, and who, if any, do they consider to be a style icon.

Here are the top eight, in their own words:

Erik van Rooyen

Erik van Rooyen

Height: 6 feet, 2 inches

Apparel brand: Greyson Clothiers

“My style depends on the mood I am in and where I am headed. If I am going to a Foo Fighters Concert, my style is going to be more rock and roll. I love a good punk rock leather jacket with black jeans.

"But on the golf course, someone I have always looked up to is Adam Scott. I think he is incredibly well put together. He always looks neat and tidy. He has the sense of style where he looks fantastic on the golf course but he could also be going to a nice dinner with sponsors or friends.

"If I had to describe my style, it is smart but with an edge. That’s why the joggers suit me perfectly. They look smart and give an edge to my look. I enjoy a clean look but like to be different from the everyday golfer.”

“My style is more on the causal, relaxed side. While I enjoy getting dressed up to go out with my friends here and there, I also love hanging out in my Puma gym clothes and sweats.

"When it comes to my style on the course, I prefer a clean look. I’ve always thought Adam Scott had great style on the PGA Tour, and I think Puma Golf outfits their guys pretty well, to be honest.”

Collin Morikawa

Height: 5-9

Apparel brand: Adidas

“I’ve been interested in style and fashion my whole life, so it’s something I’m definitely thinking about both on and off the course.

"For me, style is a form of expression and can represent confidence, the latter obviously being so important for us as golfers when we compete. I love working with adidas because they have so many versatile pieces to choose from.

"Off the course I’m certainly more relaxed when it comes to what I’ll wear, but I also enjoy getting dressed up to go out. On the course, what I wear is very thought-out because I want to feel good and be able to perform, which is another area that adidas does so well. They have great styles to choose from and they pack so much innovation into each piece so that I can perform my best.”

“I like to have a modern classic look with clothes that could be worn in any generation, but the fit is current. I’m a pretty slim guy so athletic fit clothing fits me best. I always like to add a touch of fun with each outfit like blue winged tipped shoes or a fun azalea cocktail shirt.

"FootJoy has been an awesome partner for me. They have so many different styles and color ways so I can dress the way I want and always keep the look fresh.”

“My long-time partner Ralph Lauren knows exactly what I like to wear. I like to keep it classic and love colors. Their pieces are always designed and created with the most advanced, high-quality fabrics and that are super lightweight, enhancing my comfort, performance and, of course, style on the course.”

“My sense of style really comes down to me truly being able to feel like myself in what I’m wearing. Adidas has so many options for this, which is why I love what they keep putting together every season. I can wear joggers and a hoodie, or wear shorts with long sleeves — all look great and allow me to be me.”

“I would describe my style on the golf course as a mix of trendy but traditional. I like wearing the bright colors and prints that stand out, and also love to mix in our Black Quail Wharton pique polos. They have a very clean and classy look.

"My favorite non-weekend look is definitely a nice pair of jeans, clean black tee and some white sneakers. I always admired Arnold Palmer’s style. He was always dressed really clean but not too crazy if that makes sense.”

“I try to incorporate a combination of style and function into what I wear. As an athlete competing on tour, my apparel needs to be comfortable and perform well in a variety of climates, as well as when I’m swinging a club. At the same time, I want to look fashionable and athletic. I don’t have any specific golf icons; I just try to be myself and wear things that work well for me.”

Golf fans react as Lee Westwood WEARS A HOODIE at the US Open!

Lee Westwood is in contention at the US Open at Torrey Pines as he continues to roll back the years on the PGA Tour this season.

pga tour players wearing hoodies

When hoodies were first worn on the PGA Tour and the European Tour by players such as Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy, it split opinion as to whether this breaks golf's proud dress code.

It is arguably a sign of the times and an indication of where the sport's apparel is going, however, it now seems to have caught the fancy of the game's most experienced players too.

Lee Westwood sported a golf hoodie yesterday at the US Open championship, as he played his away into contention at yet another major tournament.

At 48, did I get away with wearing a hoodie? @petermillar @PingTour @AudemarsPiguet @UPS @icapitalnetwork @CloseHouseGolf @yourgolftravel pic.twitter.com/s1pPUxR7S7 — Lee Westwood (@WestwoodLee) June 19, 2021

Last week, the 48-year-old married his girlfriend and now caddie Helen Storey in Las Vegas. The pair will be hoping that this is a good omen for their week in San Diego.

Golf fans reacted to Westwood's hoodie:

"No, not on the golf course anyway. Next, you'll be wearing ripped jeans?" one fan said.

"No worse than David Brent, when he turned up at work with a leather jacket and an earring," one fan commented.

Golf fans react as Lee Westwood WEARS A HOODIE at the US Open!

"It's the future of golf. Needs to be more relaxed to attract more people to the game. Did you wear flip flops in the clubhouse after?" another fan said.

"I am 52 this year I wear hoodies never let anyone tell you what to wear, looking good Lee," another fan commented.

"Better give it back to your son Lee," one fan said.

After shooting a solid first-round score of level-par, Westwood couldn't manage to find a birdie on Friday. His score of 72 has put him six shots behind Richard Bland and Russell Henley on 1-over-par, heading into the weekend.

Joggers? Hoodies? Taxi-cab hats? What's the latest fashion trend in the golf world?

pga tour players wearing hoodies

There’s a reckoning coming to golf.

No, not the LIV Golf defectors or anything like that, but if Jacksonville Beach resident Sam Ryder and his purple jogger pants have any say, the latest trend in golf fashion will soon catch fire.

Ryder shook up social media in January when he sported purple-colored joggers during the Farmers Insurance Open in January.

He elicited the support of some but drew the ire of others, including Phil Mickelson and John Daly, who both criticized the joggers worn by Ryder as he led the tournament for a large portion of play.

He elaborated on his thoughts on the fashion trend after shooting 72 in the second round to make the cut.

"Golf fashion now is starting to mirror lifestyle trends more so. I think there are going to be ebbs and flows. Right now I think it's something that people are having fun with and enjoying," he said. "Who knows what's going to happen in the next five to ten years. When I'm home practicing, I like to wear them so that's why I wear them."

Ryder said he doesn't try to make a statement when he wears the joggers and it's more of a feeling that he has when he wears them.

"When I wear the joggers it's like, I'm feeling it. It's not something that's premeditated," Ryder said. "I'll pack some options and it's like if I feel like I'm playing well, I got a little more swagger or something like that ... It's mood dependant for me, kind of like food is. Kind of like most things in life. Go with the flow, like most things in life."

Ryder is hardly the first person to sport a different trend of clothing in golf fashion. In 2003, Tiger Woods debuted his mock neck shirt, a style staple he’s continued to wear throughout his historic career.

The late Doug Sanders pushed fashion limits with his colorful outfits. He’d dress in the same color from head to toe, owning a variety of brightly colored shoes to match his pants and sweaters.

And before golfers sported Nike, Titleist and Callaway caps, recent hall of fame selection Tom Weiskopf wore his taxi-cab hat.

There’s always a trend in the golf world and while joggers may not get across with most golfers, something else has already started to catch on.

Light-weight jackets and pullovers that can provide warmth for athletes and still allow them to have a full range of motion.

Not to mention how cool they make them look.

"I'm five-nine and I have short legs, so I don't really look too good in (joggers). I like 'em. But I don't mind it,” Collin Morikawa said earlier this week. “I think now we went, what, a year ago I think I was wearing a hoodie, and everyone loved the hoodie and now we're into joggers. It's a style, right. It's a trend. I think a lot of people own joggers. I think they're very comfortable to wear. I just, I don't think I fit that style or that mold as well as some other guys can pull it off."

According to Lea Osol, the director of merchandising for the PGA Tour, joggers aren’t sold in shops, but hoodies are the latest product flying off the shelves.

"We don't carry joggers and we're not finding much of a demand for them. But I love it when players take risks when it comes to fashion,” Osol said. “The younger generation of PGA Tour players is certainly more open to new ideas and they're primarily responsible for hoodies becoming popular on golf courses. We're finding that men and women love the fashionable hoodies that are out now."

Keep an eye out for your favorite golfer to be sporting hoodies if temperatures allow, and don’t count out joggers yet because for those that can pull it off, it’ll likely stick around.

"The trend of golf, too, there's more streetwear fashion in golf than there ever has been and there's still classics," Ryder said. "It's really just making it more inclusive and casting a bigger net. If people want to go out and wear a hoodie and joggers, now they can still play at a country club. That's great."

GOLF Fall 2020 Style Guide: 8 hoodies to wear on the golf course

Christian Hafer

Welcome to GOLF’s 2020 Style Guide. Our Ashley Mayo and Christian Hafer put together their go-to looks based off their favorite items coming to market right now. So as we head toward crisp fall mornings and chilly winter rounds, these pieces will help you look cool, play confidently and feel like yourself. Check out more of our picks in GOLF’s 2020 Style Guide here , and visit GOLF’s Pro Shop here .

Hoodies are coming for the golf scene, and we LOVE IT. Since March, I think we’ve all become accustomed to wearing hoodies pretty much all the time. Even players like Justin Thomas and Erik van Rooyen have normalized hoodie wear on the PGA Tour, proving they’re a great layering item for the couch and the course. If you’re worried your club won’t allow a no-collar look, they’re easy to layer over a polo, too.

The great thing about hoodies is that they’re not all created equal. Maybe you’d prefer a sweater that feels a little more dressed up, a streetwear-inspired cotton hoodie, an athletic-style made with a technical fabric, or a fun pattern to stand out. They all exist, and they’re all great items to purchase this fall. Check out our favorites below.

Puma MATTR Science Polo

It seems right that Bryson would opt for a polo with a science theme for the opening round. The Puma MATTR Science polo has a number of scientific symbols on it in an all-over print style. The MATTR fabric is worth mentioning too because when we tested it in the One Way polo, we thought the performance was excellent as shown by its inclusion in our Editor's Choice List for 2021.

It is a moisture-wicking, fast-drying fabric that has a breathable, stretchy and lightweight feel to it so you can play your best. It also has UPF 50+ protection to guard you against the sun’s harmful rays.

adidas Primeknit Polo

Dustin Johnson may have struggled in his first round but his shirt game was fresh. The collarless design you can see above is the adidas Primeknit polo in an Acid Mint finish which seems to be the go-to colour for golf gear at the PGA Championship this year.

Under Armour Vanish Seamless Blocked Polo

pga tour players wearing hoodies

Compared to the other shirts on this list the Seamless Blocked polo Jordan Spieth was wearing was very understated but we still liked it very much. As you would expect with Under Armour there is lots of technology involved in relation to breathability and comfort, but one construction element we should definitely mention is the nearly sew-free design to eliminate chafing. Given how common and uncomfortable that can be, we think that is an excellent design feature.

Ever Wonder How Much a PGA TOUR Pro Makes to Wear All Those Logos?

' src=

Brace yourself, because there are some big numbers ahead…

But before we get into the dollars and cents, here’s a little background on where the data comes from:

Recently Golf.com spoke with a top sports agent , who spoke anonymously about the kind of money a PGA TOUR pro makes off of endorsement deals.  Specifically, the player profile outlined in the report is as follows:

“A Top 125 guy. A pro whose Tour card is a no-doubter; who nails down a win in the occasional year; and who can be counted on each season to make it to—and sometimes through—the Dell Technologies event in the FedEx Cup playoffs. His approximate 2017-18 season prize-money earnings was $2,000,000.”

So now that we have that laid out, let’s dig into what these guys make for being human billboards.

PGA TOUR Pro Hat Deal Value: $250,000–$500,000

No surprise that the front of the hat brings in the most bank, as that is always front-and-center in interviews, pictures, etc.

“The front of the hat is your No. 1 real estate. On the high end, this deal generally includes other inventory—bag, equipment—as well. If you’re a Top 30 player, you’re definitely making seven figures on this. For a Top 10 guy, you’re looking north of $3 million and getting close to eight figures for the most marketable players in the world. For this deal, a player will be obligated to, on average, commit to giving a company three to four appearance/promotional days per year.”

The hat really is the feature-piece for advertisers and it’s also the most consistent piece of apparel a golfer wears. Phil Mickelson’s famous KPMG hat even has its own Twitter account with over 141k followers!

PGA TOUR Pro Logo/Corporate Deal Value: $50,000–$100,000

Working our way down we have the shirt, which includes plenty of places for corporate logos, including the chest, sleeve, and collar.

“A player who keeps his card should have a minimum of three to five corporate partners. Maybe that’s a chest deal, a sleeve deal, and a collar deal—plus maybe two other name-and-likeness deals that don’t require a logo. A $100K logo deal usually includes two player obligations: a content-generation day—like a commercial shoot—and a day in a golf setting, like a pro-am or clinic. Generally, each name-and-likeness deal brings in $25K-plus, and requires two meet-and-greet appearances at PGA Tour locations. When you see guys with multiple logos on their chest, that’s a dead giveaway that their apparel deal isn’t paying much. The higher-end deals generally don’t allow additional logos unless they’ve been grandfathered in. Adidas and Under Armour usually allow one extra logo on the sleeve.”

The report noted that a player’s shoes may also be included in an overall apparel deal, or occasionally negotiated separately.

PGA TOUR Pro Club Deal Value: $100,000

It’s every golfer’s dream…lots, and lots of free golf clubs. But the deal doesn’t stop there. Top pros make some serious money for carrying all that coveted equipment.

“It used to be, you’d be a full-staff Titleist guy, with a Titleist hat, Titleist on your sleeve, a Titleist golf bag, the ball, the glove. For the normal Top 125 player, what’s happened over the years is the equipment dollars have gone down a bit, and the corporate and clothing dollars have come up. Now what you see more of is, say, a Titleist equipment guy—but he’s got a corporation on the front of his hat, and he wears Puma clothes and shoes. He combines equipment, clothing and corporate dollars.”

PGA TOUR Pro Ball Deal Value: $50,000–$100,000

The ball you play matters, especially when playing at the highest level of the game. We can all remember the money Bubba Watson turned down when he left Volvik  so clearly money isn’t everything. That said, players still make big money to play top name golf balls.

“Typically dominated by Titleist. If you’re on Tour, you can expect to get a ball-shoe-glove deal from Titleist—unless you get a ball deal from someone like Callaway, TaylorMade or Srixon. Or Bridgestone, though they’re not as common because Bridgestone is way more selective.”

PGA TOUR Pro Performance Bonus Values

When you play well, you’re in the spotlight a whole lot more, and if you’re wearing a sponsor’s logo, they’re going to enjoy all that extra exposure. So most of the contracts above also include performance bonus incentives including approximately $10k – $25k for keeping your Tour card, $25k to $100k for a PGA TOUR win, and another $100k for making it into the FedExCup final (Top 30).

Final Balance Sheet

Although these are some seriously eye-popping numbers, like any business, there are always expenses to balance out the revenue, and PGA TOUR pros’ accounting is no different.

PGA TOUR pros have a lot of team members that attribute to their success, and all of them are on the payroll. These include, caddies, agents, trainers, coaches, accountants, etc. Additionally, all that travel to and from tournaments adds up, to the tune of $3,000 – $5,000 per week.

When it’s all said and done the average Tour player spends about half a million bucks on his team and other incidentals.

Here’s the final balance sheet according to the Golf.com report :

  • Average total Tour earnings: $2,000,000
  • Average total non-tournament earnings: $700,000
  • Average total outlay: $554,000
  • Average net profit (before taxes): $2,146,000

Tiger Woods, Sun Day Red, Today Show

Tiger Woods ' clothing and apparel brand, Sun Day Red , is finally here. The brand officially launched Wednesday.

Woods promoted the line on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday evening before joining Carson Daly on the Today Show Wednesday morning.

Daly and Woods spoke about various topics, from Scottie Scheffler’s wild swing to the relationship with his children. Daly also wanted to know why the Big Cat wears his signature color .

“My mom thought that being born a Capricorn that red was my power color,” Woods explained. “In some of the junior golf events in So Cal, I would wear red, and I won. Then, in spite, I wore blue at other tournaments — I didn’t win. So I then switched to red, and I had a lot more success wearing red.”

The 15-time major winner explained that he had to make a deal with his mom.

“I’ll wear red at big events, on the last round of big events, because I cannot wear it every single day,” he said. “She said fine, ‘just wear it the last day,’ and I’m wearing it.”

Woods announced in January that he and longtime partner, Nike, were parting ways.

Shortly thereafter ahead of the Genesis Invitational , Woods unveiled his Sun Day Red brand with a few signature pieces, but May 1 marked the first time the public could purchase the products.

Although the first collection ironically did not include red clothing, many of the items had already sold out.

Woods explained to Daly the idea behind the new logo and his goal.

“The logo is a tiger. It’s nice and clean. There is some representation of what I have done in my career. There’s 15 stripes — I’ve won 15 major championships,” Woods said. “My goal is to ruin the logo. I want to keep ruining the logo. The trademark is this, and my job is to ruin it.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Playing Through (@_playingthrough)

The 82-time PGA Tour winner had partnered with Nike since the beginning of his career. But there is something special about wearing your own line.

“It’s incredible to wear something designed by athletes made for athletes.”

“The Hunt” collection is currently the only one on Sun Day Red’s website that includes tops, bottoms, hoodies, gloves, hats, ball markers and other accessories.

Some fans received exclusive access to the Pines collection, an all-green vibe modeled after his five green jackets. They had to sign up during Masters week to participate, and Sun Day Red selected a few for early access.

That collection will go live to the public in June. Two more collections, “All Things Red” and “The Brave,” will launch at a later date on the website.

Tiger Woods, TaylorMade drop first release of Sun Day Red luxury apparel, accessories collection

Change Text Size

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – Sun Day Red, the athluxury brand from 15-time major champion and 82-time PGA TOUR winner Tiger Woods and TaylorMade Golf, has launched its initial release of golf, training and lifestyle apparel and accessories.

The collection features a versatile array of men’s apparel and accessories that cater to individuals with an active lifestyle.

The first release, named “The Hunt,” previews colors that Woods will be wearing at Valhalla Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the upcoming PGA Championship in May. The bright colors and visuals reference Woods’ action-oriented playoff battle at the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Woods and TaylorMade first joined forces in 2017 with a multi-year equipment endorsement agreement, and Woods collaborated with TaylorMade’s industry-leading engineering team to develop the acclaimed P7TW irons before claiming a fifth green jacket at the Masters in 2019. Woods has also been instrumental in the development of TaylorMade’s Milled Grind wedge line with his custom “TW” grinds.

Both Woods and TaylorMade announced the creation of the standalone Sun Day Red brand in February , just ahead of The Genesis Invitational tournament.

“We have been eagerly awaiting this moment since our brand was first announced,” said Sun Day Red President Brad Blankinship. “We are excited for everyone to experience firsthand the exceptional quality of Sun Day Red apparel.”

“I am thrilled with the Sun Day Red apparel and accessories that we have put together,” said Woods. “Personally, I have loved wearing the products, and I am ready to see our brand proudly embraced all over the world.”

Sun Day Red eventually plans to broaden its product offering to include footwear, women and children’s lines.

Booed after scoring, Spartak Moscow player faces fan fury

MOSCOW (AP) — When Denis Glushakov scores a goal for Spartak Moscow, some fans cheer and some fans jeer.

Others take it even further.

Glushakov has become a target for Spartak fans after being accused of undermining popular coach Massimo Carrera, who ended Spartak's 16-year wait for a Russian league title in 2016-17 but was fired in October after a string of poor results.

So when Glushakov scored to give his team a 1-0 lead over Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday, many Spartak fans didn't quite know how to react. The hardcore sectors, waving banners with Glushakov's No. 8 crossed out, cheered the goal and then chanted that he was a "Judas" and demanded he leave the club.

The feud between the team captain and Spartak's influential fan clubs has dominated Russian soccer talk for months, partly fueled by an Instagram poetry reading.

"He betrayed our club, our colors and all of us, everyone who supports Spartak with all their soul," one major fan group said in a statement. "Denis, in his own selfish interest, instigated the team to undermine the coach, meaning intentionally losing games."

There is no evidence Glushakov played any role in match-fixing, but he did have a difficult relationship with Carrera. The Italian coach dropped Glushakov and Andrei Yeshchenko to the reserves after they supposedly pressed the "like" button on an Instagram video of an actor reading a poem criticizing Carrera.

Last week, supporters twice ran onto the field toward Glushakov during matches. A fan who confronted the midfielder during Thursday's Europa League loss to Rapid Vienna — leading to a UEFA disciplinary charge against Spartak — told Russian media he wanted the midfielder out. When another ran out during Sunday's 2-1 win over Lokomotiv, Glushakov asked for leniency, saying the fan had simply wanted to shake his hand in support.

Once a hero to Spartak fans who called him "the funeral" for scoring crucial goals to kill off opposing teams, Glushakov said he just wants the fuss to die down.

"It's not the easiest period in my life and everyone who knows me knows how strongly I love Spartak. Whatever happens, you need to put the team first and not think about me, other players or other people," Glushakov wrote on Instagram on Sunday. "Congratulations on the win to all the fans, without exception."

Hoey claims fifth European Tour title in Moscow

Michael Hoey claimed his fifth European title with a runaway four-shot victory at the Russian Open in Moscow on Sunday.

The 34-year-old from Ballymoney in Co Antrim was five shots clear going into the final round and carded a two-under 70 to finish on 16 under at Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club on the outskirts of the Russian capital.

In joint second place were France’s Alexandre Kaleka, who won the event last year, and England’s Matthew Nixon.

Hoey claims €166,660 for his win and will move into the top 80 of the Road to Dubai standings with earnings of €246,383 for the year.

Hoey said: “I have absolutely loved the golf course this week. The putting was the key for me. I have been working hard on that a lot recently and the improvement is really showing because I making a lot of birdies.

“That is the main difference at this level. You have to be able to make a lot of putts because the standard is so high these days that it usually comes down to who makes the most putts.

“It’s pretty amazing to think that I have won five European Tour titles.

“It is a great feeling to win and every time you do it you just want more and more. Hopefully I can get at least another one before the end of the season.

“It has given me a great boost. I am not the most consistent player in the world but when I get into these positions I usually do okay.”

Hoey dropped just one shot throughout the day, at the 12th, and his lead was cut to two by Kaleka and Dane JB Hansen.

But his birdie at the 17th steadied nerves and Kaleka (bogey) and Hansen (double bogey) both dropped strokes at the last to card 68s.

Nixon came home in 33 and signed for a three-under-par 69, finishing tied second with Kaleka a shot ahead of Hansen.

Hoey said: “I did feel the pressure a bit today because I wasn’t swinging it as freely as I had done yesterday but I got the job done in the end.

“Making my first birdie of the day on the seventh was a bit of a turning point because I had burned a few edges before that and you start to wonder if it is going to be your day.”
