Triptych of three weekend getaways outside of NY

Sure, there’s something fabulous about hopping on a plane to the nearest tropical destination as soon as temperatures drop. But there's also magic in embracing our surroundings—and we've got plenty of local gems that offer winter wonderland escapes replete with the coziest of hygge vibes . These 31 charming winter weekend getaways from NYC are just that, and they are all within a few hours’ drive of the city.

The 27 Quaintest Airbnbs in the Northeast

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - An indoor pool at sunset, light streaming through the dozens of windows that make up the walls.

1. The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, PA

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours, 15 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It : super cozy, plentiful outdoor activities, luxurious amenities
  • Rate: call to inquire

This Lodge takes the cake when it comes to comfy, wrap-me-up-in-a-blanket winter feels: It boasts 11 cozy fireplaces or firepits throughout, an indoor HydroMassage Waterwall and a year-round, Horizon Edge Whirlpool with both forest and lake views. Aside from the well-celebrated spa, you may enjoy eagle watching (yup, it’s a thing), ice fishing and snowshoeing. The property also recently opened a salt sauna, cold water bucket shower and snow room, designed to be used together in order to melt away stress and boost wellness.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A giant Victorian style yellow building with white accents and a brown roof.

2. Ocean House in Westerly, RI

  • Distance from NYC: 3 hours
  • Why We Recommend It: spectacular ocean views, five-star restaurant and spa

The ocean may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a winter getaway, but in the treasured Rhode Island hideaway of Watch Hill (also frequented by the likes of Taylor Swift, who owns a home here), something just makes it feel right. Plus, what’s more eerily romantic than seeing the ocean waves crash against the sand during chilly temps from the safety of your warm cocoon? Featuring a piano, a grand stone-faced fireplace, architectural columns and antique furniture in the lobby, rooms upstairs are coastal cozy with plush beds and tasteful décor. Bonus: Many rooms feature soaking tubs.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A copper and patina bathtub sits in front of a massive window overlooking the foliage. The interior of the room features geometric patterns on the floor and walls.

3. Urban Cowboy Lodge in Big Indian, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours and 30 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: fire pits, decadent soaking tubs, great for hiking
  • Rate: from $200/night

A wilderness retreat reminiscent of a dude ranch (with a decidedly contemporary and trendy twist), this special property boasts 28 guest rooms, plus an adorable freestanding chalet and cabin. Taxidermy details, weathered woods, mixed prints, pot belly stoves, roaring fireplaces and picture windows exposing views of the surrounding Catskill mountains make this one a charmer. Tip: Book one of the two Alpine bathing suites with a black and rose gold gilded soaking tub to really elevate the experience.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A photograph of a sitting/living room at the Inns of Aurora. The walls are a regal red, there's a fireplace centered between two windows with an old portrait above the mantle, and a number of ornate, plus chairs and seats.

4. The Inns of Aurora Resort & Spa in Aurora, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 4 hours
  • Why We Recommend It: impeccably designed rooms in gorgeously restored turn of the century buildings, state-of-the-art spa with a focus on hydrotherapy
  • Rate: from $268/night

This Fingers Lakes treasure is actually a collection of five properties, all built in the late 19 th and early 20 th century and restored to perfection (but often with quirky, modern sensibilities) within the past 2 0 years. Stay at the central Aurora Inn for a classic, elegant vibe or at the newly restored Wallcourt Hall (formerly a girls’ dormitory) for a more casual, modern getaway. There’s a farm-to-table restaurant on-site, not to mention the state-of-the-art spa—book a treatment and get full-day access to the saunas, hydrotherapy pools, indoor and outdoor plunge pools and complimentary café. And don’t leave the area without stopping at one of the region’s top wineries, known for Rieslings and Cabernet Francs.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A dimly-lit living room decorated for winter.

5. Foxfire Mountain House in Mount Tremper, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours, 10 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: pond-side rooms, outdoor fire pits, dining packages inclusive of daily breakfast, beer/wine happy hour and three-course dinner
  • Rate: from $450/night

If you’re looking for a place to get deep into a new book , we think we’ve found it. Grab a blanket , cozy up next to the stone fireplace and be amazed at how quickly the stress of city living dissolves. It’s worth knowing that a select number of Foxfire’s rooms have shared bathrooms, but there are also six queen rooms with their own ensuite bathrooms. Either way, with plenty of places to spread out (including our fave: the outdoor glass house atrium overlooking a fire pit), you’ll feel like you have the place to yourself.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A dark wood building in the middle of winter. Behind it you see snow-capped mountains.

6. Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter, NY

  • Why We Recommend It: extensive food options, great outdoor exploring, newly renovated
  • Rate: from $225/night

This is what we call peak hygge. This upstate favorite is convenient to Hunter Mountain, but we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to skip the slopes and go straight for the après-ski menu of hot pretzels, crab dip and a burnt maple old fashioned at the on-site restaurant, Prospect. The well-curated common areas, filled with books, tchotchkes and a contemporary fireplace are always a hit with guests, as is the outdoor fire pit. There is even a beautiful garden that guests can walk through regardless of season called Scribner’s Garden, where some of the restaurant’s produce is grown.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - An all yellow-wood great room is filled with seats at the Bear Lodge. It has incredibly high ceilings and is filled with light.

7. The Bear Lodge in Indian Lake, NY

  • Why We Recommend It: stunning forest views, private home, sledding on-site
  • Rate: from $216/night

Full of peace, tranquility and plenty of solitude, Indian Lake is quieter in the winter months, when the popular wilderness camping area thins out. At Bear Lodge, you can enjoy the vibe of camping and keep warm and cozy in a log cabin, complete with cathedral chandeliers, plenty of wood details, antler chandeliers, taxidermy, a wood stove and three (!) outdoor fire pits. The home has vintage cabin decor and plenty of nostalgia to warm up your soul, too. A furry pup (or up to four, actually) can accompany you on your trip since the property is pet-friendly . The home is located on 11 acres backed by state land, meaning it has phenomenal sledding hills, and guests can ski at the nearby Gore Mountain, too.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A modern sitting room is filled with colorful furniture in a somewhat bright setting.

8. The Amelia in Hudson, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours, 40 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: elegant accommodations and excellent location close to some of Columbia County’s best restaurants and arts centers
  • Rate: from $311/night

A brick fireplace, dark wood moldings, crisp white and cream walls, reading nooks with packed bookshelves and plenty of comfy chairs to slink into are just a few of the details that make this property in Hudson, NY a charmer. Woman-owned , the expertly converted Queen Anne-style property has an emphasis on feng shui , which we of course appreciate, and luxe details, like Frette bath towels and Lockwood New York bath products. With just eight airy, well-appointed rooms, you can keep to yourself or make friends with the neighbors.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A fire-pit with some gray wood Adirondack chairs is positioned outside of a red wooden building at The Williams.

  • Rate: from $201/night

The bucolic town of Williamstown is surrounded by forested paradise, and the obvious setting for a boutique property modeled after a classic American farmhouse. Come for the warm, welcoming lobby and Adirondack chairs stationed outside a big red barn (aka the namesake restaurant, The Barn). Stay for the contemporary art, which includes photography, paintings, pottery and sculptures sprinkled throughout. Alongside fireplaces and fire pits and other places to keep warm, The Williams Inn has quick access to nature and lots of cycling, canoeing, kayaking and rock climbing if you’re so inclined.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A nautical-themed sitting room is decorated for Christmas at the Kennebunkort Inn.

10. Kennebunkport Inn in Kennebunkport, ME

  • Distance from NYC: 5 hours, 15 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: holiday festivities, free sport rentals, easy walk to rest of town
  • Rate: from $229/night

No matter the season, Kennebunkport is one of those towns in coastal Maine that will transport you to a different world, especially when a roaring fire is in view. Located in the downtown area, guests will find a resort that goes the extra mile for the holiday season—in fact, you might even turn up to find festive decorations in your guest room. In the earlier winter months, the hotel turns into a Christmas Village, complete with a curling rink, festive decor, intimate igloos and private gondolas on the outdoor patio, where you can scoop up warm Maine lobster dip, Rockefeller oysters or chocolate and peppermint hot chocolate.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A pool table is centered in a brick lined sun room at the Troutbeck.

11. Troutbeck in Amenia, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 2 hours
  • Why We Recommend It: wellness amenities, heated outdoor pool, 250 riverside acres to explore
  • Rate: from $485/night

When we dream about having our very own reading nook, this is what we picture. And it happens to be inside a renovated 18th-century country estate where Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway and Ralph Waldo Emerson once stayed. The Barns at Troutbeck is Troutbeck’s sparkling new wellness facility offering guests a suite of treatments, like trauma resolution, meditation, facial acupuncture, dry saunas, yoga and more. Natural beauty and a woodland paradise surround the historic property, all of which can be enjoyed from the outstanding on-site restaurant and cocktail bar.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A great room at the Cedar Lakes Estate with high wooden ceilings, a giant hearth, and lots of seats.

12. Cedar Lakes Estate in Port Jervis, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: lodging options for trips and groups of all sizes, stunning wedding venue, private lakes
  • Rate: from $275/night

This former summer camp has been transformed by a sister duo into a luxurious retreat with a variety of accommodations. Our favorite? The snuggly cabins featuring fireplaces, outdoor patios and heated floors. There’s also a picture-perfect secluded lakefront cottage, plus a large farmhouse for bigger families and groups of friends, and camp-style houses with bunk beds if that’s more your vibe. This winter, the property’s garden will transform into an ice skating rink, which will double as a place for magical private dinners, with tables set on a carpet right on the ice, surrounded by twinkling white lights.

Cozy Winter Weekend Getaways from New York - A sitting area at Hotel Kinsley featuring leather chairs and an orange velvet couch. The room is dim.

13. Hotel Kinsley in Kingston, NY

  • Distance from NYC: 1 hour, 45 minutes
  • Why We Recommend It: affordable, great local farms and breweries, an infrared sauna
  • Rate: from $227/night

There are four distinct buildings that make up this luxurious hotel. The main building of this sleek escape in the historic uptown of Kingston was notably once the federal bank of New York. Its stately vibe remains, but chic details, like the wood-paneled bar, plush velvet sofas and lush greenery, set it over the top. The vibrant hotel restaurant is led by a James Beard-award winning restaurateur and guests can now co-work through a partnership with Barnfox , which means you can take advantage of lower mid-week rates and get some work done too.

15. Hasbrouck House in Stone Ridge, NY

As a bonus of staying here, you can take complimentary yoga classes at Whole Sky Yoga Studio, located within walking distance from the property, or set up a private open air session with their guest services team.

Winter Day Trip From New York: New Haven, CT

Old brick buildings form a square around a lawn in winter

Planning a winter day trip from New York opens up a world of possibilities.

The charm of New Haven, Connecticut, beckons with its rich history, cultural attractions, and cozy winter ambiance. Here’s what you can expect from a day trip to New Haven during the winter season.

You have a few options as far as transportation goes:

If you have a car, you can drive north out of the city, and Route 95 will take you right there. As always, traffic is a huge factor in getting in and out of New York City, but generally, this trip takes 2-2.5 hours via car.

➡️ Click here to explore car rentals from New York City. 🚗

If you don’t have a car, there are buses from Port Authority or trains from Grand Central. These routes usually take 2 hours, depending on schedules.

New Haven, Connecticut, is a city steeped in history, home to Yale University, and known for its vibrant arts scene. When winter blankets the city, New Haven becomes an ideal destination for a memorable day trip.

Start your day trip by wandering through the picturesque campus of Yale University.

The historic architecture, including the iconic Yale University Art Gallery, takes on a special charm in the winter. It’s actually the oldest university art museum in the Western Hemisphere.

It houses a wide variety of art. For example, right now they’re exhibiting ‘Thinking Small: Dutch Art to Scale’ which showcases 17th-century objects from the Netherlands.

Walk a mile north through campus and you’ll find yourself in the Hillhouse Avenue Historic District. Both Mark Twain and Charles Dickens have been quoted on how beautiful this particular area is. The gorgeous old mansions are only made more beautiful with a dusting of fresh snow.

As a Harry Potter fan, I can’t help but compare Yale’s campus to that of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Here in the States, we don’t have a surplus of old architecture like that, so Yale is really special.

Admire the snowy surroundings as you stroll through the courtyards and absorb the intellectual atmosphere.

Medieval looking brick buildings tower over a paved path.

No trip is complete without savoring the local cuisine. In New Haven, don’t miss the opportunity to try the famous New Haven-style pizza.

Visit one of the renowned pizzerias like Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana or Sally’s Apizza. Or, try something different like the “Italian Bomb” at Modern Apizza. This pie has seven toppings, and this 80-year-old restaurant is known to have some of the friendliest staff in the city.

Either way you go, you can warm up with a mouthwatering slice of pizza, a perfect treat for a chilly day.

If your taste buds want to explore outside of pizza, you will be spoiled for choice in New Haven. A perfect winter day trip from New York can’t have enough food right?

For dishes inspired by Central and South Indian street foods, have dinner at Sherkaan. They also have happy hour from 3 pm to 6 pm Monday- Friday. Their drink menu could be described as, “take the classics and add some whimsy”.

As a first-timer in New Haven, you probably haven’t experienced Louis’ Lunch. It’s truly a rite of passage for locals and visitors alike.

A meaty burger and tomato on sourdough bread.

This tiny, brick, hole in the wall has been serving hamburgers since 1900. Depending on who you ask, they’ll say that Louis invented the hamburger.

The popular lunch spot doesn’t have a diverse spread of options. Still, if you’re a carnivore you will not be disappointed ordering “two cheese works” which translates to two hamburgers with cheese, tomato, and onion, cooked medium rare on toast. While popular for lunch, it’s also a great restaurant for a late-night treat on the weekends.

Nothing punctuates a perfect winter day trip like a cozy cocktail. There seems to be a bar on nearly every corner in New Haven so it won’t be hard to find a stool to perch on.

But if you want something different, head to Ordinary, New Haven’s beloved speakeasy. Extra points if you can snag a seat in the backroom near the roaring fireplace.

Two cocktails on a table at a bar.

Dive into New Haven’s vibrant arts scene by exploring its museums and galleries. The Kehler Liddell Gallery is open year-round with different exhibits. Check their website to see what’s on during your visit.

One unique architectural eyesight brimming with literary treasures is the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. This library is one of the world’s largest libraries devoted to rare books and manuscripts.

Their collection includes original Audobon bird prints and a Gutenberg bible.  They also have rotating exhibits. The library is open to the public every day and offers tours on Saturdays at 1:30 pm.

The Yale Center for British Art and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History offer captivating exhibits that provide a perfect indoor escape from the winter cold. Both have been undergoing a massive renovation and will be reopening this year in 2024. Immerse yourself in art, history, and culture without braving the winter weather.

Your winter day trip from New York could also include a show—and without the NYC price and crowds!

The Shubert Theater is located in the heart of downtown and not a week goes by without an exciting lineup of shows.

This year already is featuring comedians like Kevin Hart and beloved musicals like Annie and Hadestown.

Long Wharf Theatre, which has been around since the ’60s, is another great place to catch a show, like Arthur Miller’s play “A View From The Bridge”.

If music is more your vibe, New Haven has plenty of venues.

College Street Music Hall dates back to 1926 and hosts popular artists like Portugal. The Man and The Roots. Shows at nearby Cafe Nine are often $10 or less. They feature up-and-coming regional acts, comedy, and tribute bands, for a fun and affordable night out.

Skiing Winter Day Trip From New York City

Skiing is one of the best winter day trips you can do from New York City.

For those seeking more active pursuits, there is a plethora of  things to do in winter in Connecticut  and New York.

There’s no need to drive all the way to New Hampshire or Vermont for a quick winter day trip. This region offers fantastic skiing destinations.

Hit the slopes for an exhilarating day of winter sports without straying too far from the city.

Nestled in the scenic Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, Mohawk Mountain Ski Area provides a perfect winter retreat. This ski resort offers a range of slopes suitable for all skill levels and the trip only takes 2.5 hours barring major traffic.

Mohawk Mountain differentiates itself from nearby mountains by offering night skiing and tubing. They even have a night deal that’s available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays starting at 4 pm.

You can rent skis or a snowboard, and get a lift pass for only $65. Compare that to their regular 8-hour lift prices of $42 for weekdays and $77 for weekends. Equipment rental prices also vary slightly from day to night ($50-$60).

Venture a bit farther to Windham Mountain in the Catskills, where winter enthusiasts can indulge in various snow activities.

With well-groomed trails and modern amenities, Windham Mountain is a popular choice for a day of skiing, snowboarding, or even snowshoeing.

If you’re up for a more challenging skiing experience, head to Hunter Mountain. Featuring the highest peak in the Catskills, Hunter Mountain attracts avid skiers with its diverse trails and breathtaking views.

After a day on the slopes, unwind at the resort’s cozy lodges and enjoy the warmth of a crackling fireplace.

Both Windham and Hunter are closer to 3 hours from NYC, so it’s probably the limit for a day trip, especially if skiing all day.

If you want to spend more time on the slopes and less time in the car, you can be at Mountain Creek in only 90 minutes without traffic.

This New Jersey destination offers skiing and snowboarding, as well as snow tubing. The location may be more convenient but the trade-off here is price, with daily lift tickets costing $119.99 per person.

Another unique option for city dwellers is Big SNOW American Dream, just across the Hudson in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

This facility is completely indoors, so no matter the weather, you can enjoy a full day of skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and even snow biking.

With so many options within a few hours of the Big Apple, you can enjoy the thrill of winter sports against the backdrop of stunning winter landscapes or conveniently indoors.

6 NYC-area winter day trips you can get to without a car

Escape New York City at one of these winter-friendly sites outside of the city

It’s probably too cold to visit Coney Island or the Hamptons these days, but there are places where you can get away from New York City without a car. These winter day trips are perfect ways to get out of town even when the weather’s less desirable, whether that means embracing the cold by getting out on a ski slope or burrowing indoors with a good book and a spa treatment. And best of all, these spots are accessible without a car—because the last thing you need is the extra stress of renting one of those in New York.

Thunder Ridge Ski Area

Near the Connecticut state line, this ski area is about an hour and a half from the city, making it ideal for novice skiiers who need to get in some practice runs before committing to a whole winter in Utah. Activities, from ski school to paintball, make Thunder Ridge a good choice for families where each member wants something different, and several nearby hotels offer ski-and-stay packages if you want to sneak in a few more runs before heading home.

How to get there: Metro North’s “ Thunder Ski ” package includes train tickets to Patterson, tickets on the shuttle from Patterson to Thunder Ridge, and a day ski lift pass.

Mohonk Mountain House

Odds are good that you need to get 2016 detoxed out of your system. Get the best of both indoor and outdoor activities at this legendary spa resort about an hour and a half north of the city in New Paltz (the property’s name comes from Lake Mohonk, which it borders). Outside, partake in hiking and forest bathing; inside, meditation, yoga, and spa treatments. Plus, the building’s not bad to look at: the hotel was designed by Napoleon LeBrun, who was best known for his architectural work on churches—the wooden arches above the pool will give you a sense of his style.

How to get there: Take Metro-North to Poughkeepsie; Mohonk will send someone to pick you up from the station.

winter day trips new york

Hunter Mountain Ski Resort

If you can’t commit to spending the weekend at a Vermont resort, or don’t want to spend your entire vacation in a car, Hunter Mountain is a solid option that keeps you soundly in New York state and able to sleep in your own bed at night. About three hours east of the city in the Catskills, Hunter has a dramatic drop that is well-suited for skiing or (gulp) ziplining, for the truly adventurous. If you’re not adventurous, that’s okay, too—there are classes for all levels.

How to get there: For ease, it’s tough to beat the NYC Ski Bus’s all-inclusive package; get round-trip transit, lift passes, gear rental, and/or a lesson as needed.

winter day trips new york

Olana State Historic Site

If you’ve admired paintings like Asher Brown Durand’s “Thanatopsis” at The Met, head to Olana, which was a center stage for the Hudson River School of artists. Olana was a mixed-use group of artist homes and workspaces with breathtaking views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains that make it pretty easy to see why so many painters were inspired here; it has since been given National Landmark status. You can take a 90-minute tour of the main house where painter Frederic Church and his family lived, and the grounds are free to explore in nice weather.

How to get there: Take Amtrak to Hudson; from there cab it to Olana.

winter day trips new york

Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa

Saratoga is known for its restorative sulfur-infused mineral water, and no less than Franklin Delano Roosevelt went there to “take the waters” during his presidency—in fact, when he was governor of New York, Roosevelt originally signed off on the development of a health spa facility in Saratoga Springs, hence the name. Unlike some spas, where you lie on a massage table or sit in a plush chair, here you’ll be escorted to a private bathroom to float gently in a bathtub filled with reddish-tinted water—and the experience is extra special and restorative in the winter. Book in for a long weekend at the Gideon Putnam, then reserve a spot at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa on-site.

How to get there: Take Amtrak to Saratoga Springs; the resort has a shuttle that will pick you up.

Mashomack Preserve

About one-third of Shelter Island is dedicated to the Mashomack Preserve, a protected natural area where you’re as likely to find oak trees as you are to find marsh reeds. The Preserve is a habitat for several rare plant species and birds, including ospreys—that means you won’t be able to bring in pets or outside food when you hike, bird-watch, or take photos. Because of the delicate ecosystem, there’s no biking or horseback riding, so Mashomack is more the kind of place you go for a meditative walk, not outdoor sports. Note: while the area is open year-round, in January you can only visit on weekends. There are nature and bird-focused tours periodically, but you’ll need to book ahead.

How to get there: Uber/Lyft from either of Shelter Island’s ferry dropoffs—North Haven/South Ferry is closer.

Even better: Two buses—Urban Sherpa Travel  ( urbansherpatravel.com )  and OvRride  ( ovrride.com ) —offer Saturday round-trips to the mountain out of New York City; the latter lets you choose just about any combination of lift ticket, ski or snowboard rental, and lessons in addition to the bus ride. Ample on-site snowmaking and seven well-placed dining facilities, including a waffle cabin, mountaintop lodge, and eateries at both the Sunbowl learning area and the tubing park—ensure that you’ll keep your crew warm, fed and skiing (or tubing or boarding) all day long.

Stamford Museum & Nature Center

Stamford Museum & Nature Center

Travel time:  1¼ hours

Located on 112 acres in North Stamford, Connecticut, the 112-acre Stamford Museum & Nature Center  (39 Scofield Town Rd; 203-322-1646,  stamfordmuseum.org . $10, children ages 4–17 $5, children 3 and under free)  is a must for nature-loving kids. In addition to the museum, housed in the Bendel Mansion, this sanctuary supports a working farm—a 1750 farmhouse filled with heritage breed animals little ones can visit, plus an organic vegetable garden and open pastures—a 1750-built farmhouse devoted mostly to heritage animal breeds, plus an organic vegetable garden, a maple sugaring house and open pastures—a nature center and the beautiful, perhaps most fun of all, Edith & Robert Graham Otter Pond, where river otters Edie and Robert regale visitors with their playful antics year-round. While exploring some of the 80 miles of forested hiking trails, including the wheelchair-accessible Wheels in the Woods trail, you may spot the likes of red foxes and white-tailed deer, woodpeckers and wood ducks. This winter, families can look forward to the Lego-centric show “A Billion Bricks” (opens Dec 14) and the much-anticipated Maple Sugar Sunday (Mar 1; $10 per person, includes museum admission), where they can watch sap be turned into syrup at the maple sugaring house and, for $5 extra, enjoy a pancake brunch.

Beacon, NY

Travel time:  1½ hours

Celebrate the tenth anniversary of Dia:Beacon  (3 Beekman St; 845-440-0100,  diaart.org . $12, children under 12 free)  with a trip to the small town on the Hudson that’s become a big cultural destination. Currently on view at the Nabisco box factory–turned–contemporary art haven are the ultra kid-friendly  24 Colors—for Blinky  by Imi Knoebel, a series of 21 painted shapes, and an installation of embroidered works and works on paper by the Italian artist Alighiero e Boetti. Some of the individual galleries will stretch kids’ definitions of art, such as the room of work by Dan Flavin, whose medium is light;  Birdcalls , an audio work by Louise Lawler; and Robert Smithson’s  Map of Broken Glass . After, head to Hudson Beach Glass  (162 Main St; 845-440-0068,  hudsonbeachglass.com ) , just a short walk away, where kids can blow their own glass ornament ($30; advance registration recommended; Nov–Dec only) in a 15-minute, one-on-one session, watch glassblowing artists in action or check out glass works made by 30 to 40 artists from across the country. Stop at Homespun Foods for the likes of sandwiches and Middle Eastern platters before heading back home on the train. Be sure to check out MetroNorth’s round-trip special, with discounted fares and reduced admission to Dia:Beacon.

Lakota Wolf Preserve

Lakota Wolf Preserve

Imagine being surrounded by four packs of wolves in a remote, wooded part of western New Jersey. That’s just what awaits young naturalists and their families at the Lakota Wolf Preserve  (89 Mount Pleasant Rd, Columbia, NJ; 877-733-9653,  lakotawolf.com . $16, children ages 2–11 $8. Tours offered Tue–Sun) , which cares for wolfs, foxes and bobcats born in captivity. Animal caregivers offer regular “wolf watches” on which visitors meet some of the preserve’s 21 wolves from an observation area in the center of all four wolf packs (subspecies include timber, tundra, arctic and British Columbia wolves)—they’re separated from each other, and visitors, by a double fence. Educators talk about their social behavior and feeding habits and sometimes even get the animals to howl. Watches coincide with the periods when wolves are at their most active; in winter (Nov 3–Mar 8) they’re offered at 10:30am and 3pm (be sure to arrive 30 minutes before your tour starts). Reservations are not required for weekend tours, but are for those during the week. Call the preserve’s weather line at 877-733-9653 before heading out to make sure it’s open.

Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT

Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT

Travel time:  2¼ hours

The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut  (10 North Water St, Norfolk, CT; 203-852-0700,  maritimeaquarium.org . $20, children ages 3–12 $13, children under 3 free) , introduces families to the marine residents and ecology of Long Island Sound with a slew of cool exhibitions, starting with an indoor-outdoor harbor seal area, followed by the Shark & Ray Touch Pool, one of the most interactive animal encounters we’ve ever seen. Kids wait their turn to gently pet the backs of nurse sharks and all kinds of rays. Don’t worry: It’s not only safe but supervised. Other highlights include a meerkat exhibit, a series of re-created Long Island Sound habitats, from salt marshes (think crabs and sea horses) to river eco-systems (with two river otters and a snapping turtle)—plus an Intertidal Touch Tank where kids can meet starfish, hermit crabs and horseshoe crabs, among other fascinating but harmless creatures. Rounding out the offerings are a giant (this time enclosed) shark tank, a jelly exhibit and a 10,000-square-foot enclosure that’s home to two young green sea turtles hatched in a rescue hospital, who could live to be 100.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia

Travel time:  1¾ hours

The city of Philadelphia is far less crowded in the winter months, making it the perfect time to visit. It’s got some of the best museums in the Northeast, including the Franklin Institute  (222 N 20th St; 215-448-1200,  www2.fi.edu . $16.50, children ages 3–11 $12.50, under 3 free) , a kid-friendly science museum that’s also the city’s most visited (don’t miss its “One Day in Pompeii” exhibit (up through Apr 27 and June 2014, respectively)). But given the city’s cachet as the Birthplace of Liberty, a stop at Independence Mall, the several block strip between Race and Walnut Sts and S 5th and S 6th Streets, is required. There you’ll find the Liberty Bell (a gift from Great Britain, pre-Revolution), Independence Hall (where the Constitution was written and signed) and the hands-on National Constitution Center. Head to Reading Terminal Market  (51 N 12th St between Arch and Filbert Sts; 215-922-2317,  readingterminalmarket.org )  to refuel. You can’t go wrong with classic Philly sandwiches at DiNics or Chinese fare from Sang Kee Peking Duck. The history lesson can resume at Bassett’s Ice Cream, founded in 1861; in 2010 it served President Obama its mint chocolate chip.

Fahnestock Winter Park

Fahnestock Winter Park

This winter sports zone within Clarence Fahnestock State Park  (1570 Rte 301, Carmel, NY; 845-225-3998,  nysparks.com . Trail pass $9, kids under 18 $6; sledding pass $3 per person) , in Carmel, New York, is one of the easiest ways to introduce the kids (and yourselves, as the case may be) to the kind of winter wonderland snowshoeing and cross-country skiing reveal. A small base lodge rents skis and boots (by the day) and snowshoes (by the hour), plus pulk sleds to pull very little ones behind you as you ski. Many of the easiest machine-groomed trails (nearly ten miles of them wind through the 16,000-acre preserve) begin right at the lodge. Fahnestock Winter Park also offers the option of renting giant inner tubes, so if you’d rather just play in the snow, bundle up, climb a hill and let loose. Cold Spring Station is just 15 minutes from the park entrance by car, so the trip’s also doable via MetroNorth if you book a taxi ahead of time.

Riverhead Foundation seal cruise

Riverhead Foundation seal cruise

Travel time:  1 hour

It’s easy for urban kids to forget that our city’s waterways are also outlets to the wilds of the Atlantic Ocean. A great reminder that our waterways actually lead to the Atlantic Ocean is the two-hour afternoon seal cruise run by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation; it departs from Freeport, Long Island, on winter weekends  (Dec 28–Apr 13 via the Captain Lou Fleet, 28 Woodcleft Ave, Freeport, NY 631-369-9840,  riverheadfoundation.org . $26, children ages 3–12 $22, under 3 free. Reservations required).  Midwinter is when harbor and gray seals’ migration south is complete, making the chances of spotting one extremely good. Bundle up the family and keep watch for the playful sea mammals from the outdoor viewing deck, or from a window in the indoor cabin. An onboard naturalist talks about the biology and behavior of seals and other sea creatures you may encounter along the way and will answer your children’s sure-to-be-abundant questions.

Bounce Trampoline Sports

Bounce Trampoline Sports

Few things elicit smiles as readily as a trampoline, which is just what indoor sports center Bounce Trampoline Sports  (310 Michael Dr, Syosset, NY; 516-762-1300,  bounceonit.com/syosset . Trampolines only: one hour $15, two hours $25; inflatables only: one hour $11, two hours $17; all-access pass: one hour $22, two hours $32)  is counting on. The 50-000-square-foot emporium in Long Island is filled with wall-to-wall trampoline courts that reach to the ceiling, meaning there’s nothing to fall off of and there are no walls to fall against. Young visitors can bounce to their hearts’ content (tykes ages 1 to 6 have their own court), jump and do flips into a pit of foam blocks, play on inflatable obstacle courses and sign up for a three-minute, supervised “bungee ride” ($7) that lets them try various gymnastics moves while being strapped to a safety harness. Older kids (ages 7 to 11) can use the main courts, try slam-dunking basketballs and have a dodgeball court all to themselves. We’re guessing that hitting a moving target while jumping up and down may not be as easy as it sounds.

By the early 1800s, the city was the 10th largest in the country, which is a title that San Jose, CA, took. The area’s growth was fueled by the creation of the Erie Canal and the railroad, and it continued to serve as a vital transportation hub until the early 1900s.

Day Trips from NYC Less Than 1 Hour

Sleepy hollow, new york.

If the thought of tracing the footsteps of a phantom horseman and delving into the heart of American folklore tickles your fancy, then buckle up, because Sleepy Hollow isn’t just about the eerie allure of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Sure, the town plays up its spectral celebrity with gusto, but stick around and you’ll discover it’s more than just ghost stories and pumpkin heads.

Rockefeller State Park Preserve? It’s an outdoor aficionado’s dream with a smorgasbord of activities. Hiking, fishing, bird watching, and even horseback riding for those inclined to saddle up – the park’s main entrance is your gateway to it all. And don’t worry about wandering aimlessly; the visitor center hands out trail maps like Halloween candy.

And about that legendary Headless Horseman’s final resting place? The old churchyard is a must-see, with visitors playing detective to find Catriena Ecker Van Tessel’s grave. Yep, that’s Katrina Van Tassel for the literary buffs. Fancy walking the same path as Ichabod Crane? You can, from Tarrytown right into the heart of Sleepy Hollow, minus the dramatic chase scene, of course. Tim Burton fans might be a tad disappointed to learn the movie magic happened across the pond, but the real Sleepy Hollow doesn’t skimp on atmospheric charm.

Now, if you’re aiming for the ultimate Sleepy Hollow experience, target the Halloween season. The town transforms into a festive playground of the macabre, with events that breathe life (and the occasional chill) into Irving’s tale. Warning: these events are as popular as a ghost sighting, so snag your tickets early.

Getting there is a breeze from NYC. Just hop on a train at Grand Central, and in less than an hour, you’re stepping into a world where folklore and reality blur. Sleepy Hollow is not just a day trip; it’s a plunge into the heart of American myths, with a side of outdoor adventure. So, ready for a little supernatural excursion?

And for the bold and the brave, there’s Gunnison – New Jersey’s only legal nude beach. Fancy exploring a bit more? Bike rentals offer a two-wheeled exploration mode.

The waters may flirt with the chilly side, making some beachgoers opt for a more sedentary sand-based experience. Fear not, the people-watching is top-notch, and the vibes are as chill as the ocean breeze. For those who travel light or spontaneously, Lot D beach caters with chair and umbrella rentals, alongside a modest convoy of food trucks to tackle those beach day cravings.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Philly , as it’s affectionately known by those who love their history served with a side of cheesesteak. Located a mere hop, skip, and a jump (or, for those of us who prefer concrete numbers, about one and a half to two hours) from the Big Apple, Philly is as accessible as it is historic. And thanks to an abundance of trains and buses, getting there is as easy as pie – or should I say, as easy as devouring a soft pretzel?

Philly isn’t just old; it’s like the grandparent of American cities, steeped in history and brimming with stories of liberty and freedom. This is where America’s quest for independence kicked off, and the place that birthed the Constitution. A visit to the Liberty Bell is non-negotiable – it’s the city’s selfie magnet, symbolizing freedom and, let’s be honest, a perfect backdrop for your social media. Just a stone’s throw away (because everything in Philly seems to be within throwing distance) is the National Constitution Center. Here, you can dive into the Constitution through exhibits that are so interactive, you’ll forget you’re actually learning something.

But Philly is more than just its illustrious past. The city is a green dream with parks, trails, and fountains aplenty. Franklin Square and Logan Square are your go-tos for a dose of nature, while Spruce Street Harbor Park and the Schuylkill River Trail offer picturesque settings for those looking to unwind or take a leisurely bike ride. And for the record, Philly’s appeal isn’t limited to history enthusiasts and nature lovers; foodies and families with kids will find themselves spoilt for choice with indoor and outdoor attractions that cater to every whim.

For a breezy cultural tour, stroll down Benjamin Franklin Parkway where flags from around the globe flutter in brotherly love. Sure, taxis can zip you from point A to B, but pounding the pavement on foot is the true Philadelphian way to soak in the city’s rich tapestry of culture and history. In Philly, every step tells a story, and trust me, you’ll want to listen.

Hudson Valley, New York

Hudson Valley in New York, a relaxing getaway from the big city.

This isn’t just any day trip; it’s an invitation to step into a world where the hustle of urban life fades into the background, replaced by the tranquil beauty of nature and the warmth of small-town charm.

For those with a penchant for adventure, the Hudson Valley is your playground. Imagine embarking on a journey through trails that range from the serene Poets’ Walk to the thrilling ascents of Breakneck Ridge—a name that’s not for the faint of heart but offers rewards that are well worth the effort. And the best part? Some of these adventures are just a train ride away from Grand Central, making them easily accessible for even the most spontaneous of day-trippers.

Cyclists, too, will find their slice of heaven along the valley’s numerous rail trails, offering miles of scenic beauty to explore on two wheels. But the Hudson Valley’s appeal extends beyond the trails and into the heart of its agricultural heritage. Here, farms open their doors for visitors to immerse themselves in the simple joy of picking fresh fruit straight from the branch. Whether it’s cherries in the warmth of early summer or apples and pumpkins amidst the crisp air of fall, these experiences connect visitors to the land in the most delicious way possible. And for the little ones, hayrides and corn mazes offer delightful fun that echoes the essence of country living.

Water enthusiasts aren’t left out, with scenic river cruises departing from Kingston, offering a unique perspective of the valley’s serene landscapes and historic lighthouses. And for those whose idea of adventure leans towards the culinary, the valley is speckled with cider houses and vineyards, where the taste of the region can be savored in every sip. The dining scene here is as varied as it is exquisite, ranging from waterside eateries in Kingston to rustic pizza enjoyed amidst the verdant backdrop of an orchard like Westwind Orchards in Accord.

Though the Hudson Line train offers a scenic route along the river’s east bank to Albany, having a car unlocks the full potential of the Hudson Valley, allowing for detours and discoveries that public transport can’t accommodate. Whether you’re an active hiker, a couple seeking a romantic escape, or a family in pursuit of fun, the Hudson Valley doesn’t just offer a day trip; it presents a canvas on which to paint memories that will last a lifetime.

The Visitor’s Center is your gateway to exploring this Ivy League campus, either with a student who can explain what all those Gothic buildings are about or by simply wandering around pretending you belong there.

If you’re in the mood for a dose of culture, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History are like candy stores for the mind, offering renowned collections that range from ancient artifacts to modern masterpieces.

But wait, there’s more! New Haven isn’t just about hitting the books. The city boasts three regional theaters for those inclined towards the performing arts, houses the largest indoor ropes course in the good ol’ US of A (because why not?) at Jordan’s Furniture, and offers a scenic stroll along the Long Island Sound shoreline at Pardee Seawall Park. And for a touch of quaint charm, the old lighthouse and carousel at Lighthouse Point Park are Instagram gold.

Now, let’s talk about the real reason anyone goes anywhere: the food. New Haven takes its pizza seriously, thanks to its rich Italian-American heritage. And while you might think pizza is pizza, New Haven will school you in the art of pie perfection. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana doesn’t just serve pizza; it serves what’s often hailed as the best pizza in the United States . So, yes, a day trip to New Haven without surrendering to the pizza is like going to Paris and ignoring the Eiffel Tower – utterly unthinkable.

In short, New Haven is the surprise plot twist in your travel story, offering everything from an Ivy League jaunt to a culinary journey through pizza heaven. All aboard?

Stony Brook, New York

Stony Brook Harbor in Long Island, New York.

Stony Brook, right up against the whispers of the Long Island Sound in Suffolk County, is not just a small community; it’s a quiet retreat from the cacophony of city life, wrapped up in the scholarly vibes of SUNY Stony Brook. This college town, with its mix of youthful energy and tranquil landscapes, offers a perfect backdrop for those looking to swap the concrete jungle for a taste of coastal serenity.

City slickers in search of an escape often find their solace in the West Meadow Beach Historic District. Here, the beaches stretch long and rocky, offering a canvas for a variety of activities that range from the leisurely—think hiking and biking along scenic trails, and picnicking with a view—to simply soaking in the calm, salt-tinged air.

But Stony Brook’s allure doesn’t just end with its natural beauty. It also houses the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages, a treasure trove of cultural artifacts set in an inviting open-air museum. With gardens and fountains that seem to whisper tales of the past, it’s a spot that enchants families and history buffs alike.

For those based in NYC yearning for a day trip that blends tranquility with a touch of academic and cultural enrichment, Stony Brook presents itself as an idyllic choice. The journey from Penn Station, involving a train to Huntington followed by a transfer to Stony Brook, unfolds over approximately two and a half hours—a small price in time for a rich reward in peacefulness. Driving, on the other hand, offers a quicker route, whisking you away to this serene destination in less than ninety minutes.

In essence, Stony Brook is more than just a day trip; it’s a voyage into a quieter, slower-paced world, where the beauty of the Long Island Sound beckons and cultural gems await discovery.

Lititz, Pennsylvania

Three hours southwest of the skyscrapers of New York City, Lititz, Pennsylvania, unfurls as a canvas of small-town allure and historic charm nestled in the heart of Amish country. Its roots stretch back to the mid-1700s, courtesy of Moravian settlers, presenting a town that’s rich in history yet refreshingly unpretentious.

This quaint village isn’t just about the past; it’s a place where culinary adventures await, especially for those with a penchant for twists on traditional treats. Imagine walking into the first commercial pretzel bakery in America, established in 1861, where not only can you delve into the history of this twisted delight, but you can also try your hand at making one. However, the gastronomic journey in Lititz extends far beyond pretzels. Food tours here offer a delightful fusion of history and taste, serving up Amish recipes with a contemporary flair—think whoopie pies that could easily become the subject of your next foodie Instagram post.

Yet, it’s the town’s chocolate scene that truly sets Lititz apart. Wilbur Chocolate, with its famed chocolate buds, anchors the town’s sweet reputation. Lititz’s chocolate obsession is celebrated with gusto throughout the year, culminating in the annual Lititz Chocolate Walk. Imagine a day where every stop is a homage to chocolate, with over 25 locations dedicated to your cocoa cravings.

Beyond its epicurean delights, Lititz invites leisurely exploration. Its walkable downtown area is a treasure trove of window-shopping opportunities, art galleries, and diverse dining options, ensuring that every visitor finds their pace and pleasure. Whether you’re ambling through its historic streets, sampling its culinary offerings, or simply soaking in the small-town vibe, Lititz exemplifies the perfect day trip from NYC—where history, food, and charm intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence waterfire at sunset, an amazing event to see on a day trip from NYC.

Providence, Rhode Island , might just be the best-kept secret in the United States . Cradled in the embrace of the smallest state, this capital city punches well above its weight class in terms of culture, cuisine, and charm. It’s a place where the compact size belies a treasure trove of experiences, making the journey from New York City more than worthwhile, especially if you can spare more than a mere day to explore the richness Rhode Island has to offer.

The culinary scene in Providence is nothing short of revolutionary, a testament to the presence of the Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute within its bounds. This city is a gastronomic playground where chefs wield spatulas like artists’ brushes, painting a vibrant tableau of flavors and experiences. To dine in Providence is to embark on an epicurean adventure, so a little research before your visit will guide you to the culinary gems that dot the city.

But the feast in Providence isn’t just for your taste buds. The city is a cultural banquet, home to the RISD Museum, an extension of the Rhode Island School of Design and a beacon for art enthusiasts nationwide. For those with a penchant for the written word, Brown University’s John Hay Library offers a dive into special collections that could very well redefine a lazy afternoon. And let’s not overlook the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, where the wonders of the world and beyond are on full display.

If your visit aligns with Waterfire, prepare for an enchanting evening. On summer Saturdays, the Providence River transforms into a canvas of light and shadow, with fires dancing on the water and the air alive with the energy of food trucks, vendors, and street performers. For a truly memorable experience, consider a gondola ride for a front-row seat to this mesmerizing spectacle.

For those plotting their escape from New York City, the train from Penn Station to Providence Amtrak Station is your ticket to adventure, whisking you away in just over three hours. If driving is more your speed, the journey stretches slightly longer at three and a half hours, but with the promise of plentiful parking upon arrival.

In sum, Providence is not merely a destination; it’s an experience, rich in culinary delights, cultural treasures, and moments of sheer beauty. It beckons as one of the best day trips from New York City, inviting you to discover its myriad wonders firsthand.

Day Trips from NYC less than 4 hours away

Washington, dc.

George Washington monument in DC

America’s front yard, where history is not just a subject in school but a living, breathing entity. Making the trek from New York City to the US capital is a journey of less than four hours, whether you’re commandeering your own vehicle, hopping on a bus, or even catching a train. And trust me, for anyone looking to plunge headfirst into the American narrative, this city is a veritable playground.

DC’s reputation as a wallet-friendly destination isn’t just talk. It’s a haven for the young and the restless, boasting an abundance of hostels, a throbbing nightlife, and—wait for it—free entry to an embarrassment of museums. Seriously, if your budget’s tight, DC’s got your back. A two-day stint is ideal to really soak in the city’s vibe, but if you’re pressed for time, a well-planned day trip can still cover a lot of ground.

Now, onto the heavyweight attractions. The Capitol and the White House are impossible to miss and endlessly fascinating. And if you’re a history buff, places like the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the stoic Washington Monument will make your heart do the star-spangled banner. But here’s the deal: the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, and the plethora of museums on offer are just as compelling. It’s like choosing between chocolate and vanilla—you can’t go wrong either way.

And then there’s Georgetown. This isn’t just any old historic district; it’s a slice of Americana, complete with cobblestone streets, chic boutiques, and cafés that practically beg you to sit down and people-watch. Oh, and Georgetown University isn’t just for the academically inclined; it’s a sight to behold in its own right.

In short, Washington, DC , is more than just a pit stop for politicos; it’s a vibrant city where history, culture, and modern life intertwine in the most fascinating ways. Whether you’re here to nerd out on US history or just to see what all the fuss is about, DC welcomes you with open arms and a plethora of things to see and do. So pack your bags, and let’s get historical, shall we?

Boston, Massachusetts

Paul Revere statue in Boston Commons, with Boston buildings in the background and green trees surrounding the statue.

Boston is like the cool aunt of New England cities—historic, well-to-do, and with an influence that spreads far wider than you’d expect. If you’re looking to dive into a city that’s brimming with character (and characters, let’s be honest), then Boston is your jam. And while it deserves more than a whirlwind day tour, for those of us who are time-poor but curiosity-rich, a day in Boston is still a day well spent. Just brace yourself for an early start; the city wasn’t built in a day, but you’re sure going to try to see it in one.

Top of your to-do list should be the Freedom Trail. Think of it as Boston’s red carpet, except instead of celebrities, you’re walking in the footsteps of revolutionaries. This 2.5-mile jaunt will take you past 16 historical hotspots, starting from the greenery of Boston Commons to the naval majesty of the USS Constitution. History buffs, prepare to geek out.

Museum aficionados, welcome to your nirvana. Boston’s museum scene is like the Avengers of American culture—each one bringing something unique to the table. From the interactive playground that is the Boston Children’s Museum to the erudite halls of the Harvard Museum of Natural History, there’s enough to make your brain and Instagram feed explode with delight.

But Boston isn’t just a place to stroll through the past; it’s a city to taste, hear, and experience. The North End is your go-to for Italian flair, Chinatown for some culinary exploration, and the downtown area for, well, everything else. Faneuil Hall and Boston Public Garden should definitely be on your checklist for a dose of iconic Boston.

Walking is the name of the game here; Boston is as stroll-friendly as cities come—clean streets, safe vibes, and everything is within a reasonable distance. Taxis? Forget about them unless you fancy donating to the “Help a Taxi Driver Retire Early” fund. The T (Boston’s subway) is your wallet-friendly chariot.

Now, about getting there from New York City without losing half your day to travel: Catch an early train from Penn Station to Boston South Station. With a journey just shy of four hours, it’s practically tailor-made for day-trippers. Not a morning person? No problem. The train doubles as a mobile hotel room—catch those Zs en route and wake up ready to conquer Beantown. Trust me, Boston is worth every second of lost sleep.

20 best day trips from NYC

These getaways are not just about breathing in fresh air; they’re about rediscovering the joy of spontaneity and the art of exploring. From quaint towns that seem to have mastered the trick of slowing down time to nature reserves where the only soundtrack is the rustling leaves and distant bird calls, these day trips are your golden ticket to momentarily trading in the city’s steel canyons for nature’s vast expanses.

So, pack a day bag, grab your sense of adventure (and maybe a map, because cell service can be as elusive as peace and quiet in Times Square), and prepare to uncover the magic that lies just a short journey from the city’s ceaseless energy. Trust me, your soul (and your eardrums) will thank you.

Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s New York

Matthieu Salvaing, styled by Grace Harris / Hotel Barrière Fouquet

Also available to book at Expedia.com

French and art deco-inspired design makes this hotel très chic.

Although children are allowed and the multi-room suites are well suited for families, little ones may be bored by the lack of kid-centric amenities and programming.

For a slice of Paris in the heart of New York’s trendy Tribeca neighborhood, check into the 97-key Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s New York, which has rightfully earned a spot on our 2023 It List .

The Martin Brudnizki-designed property features spectacular elements, including European-style chandeliers, bespoke wallpaper, opulent marble bathrooms with striking brass accents, and oversized windows that let in plenty of natural light.

The two-story Fouquet’s Penthouse , with three terraces, antique mirrors, Calacatta Oro marble, and a stunning soaking tub, is considered the hotel’s crown jewel. "I think the penthouse is one of the city's very best hotel suites, with rich furnishings, plenty of outdoor space, an opulent primary bathroom, and whimsical touches," says special projects editor Elizabeth Rhodes , who filmed an episode of T+L's Suite Life at the hotel in 2023.

Additional amenities include a tranquil spa with an indoor pool, a speakeasy-inspired bar, a Cannes Film Festival-inspired screening room, and an upscale signature brasserie (don’t sleep on the roast chicken or dover sole) with prime people-watching.

The Details:

  • Standout amenities:   Lavish spa with an indoor pool, swanky brasserie, Cannes Film Festival-inspired screening room
  • Location: Tribeca
  • Starting rates: From $1,000 per night

Aman New York

Kelly Marshall

Complete with a massive spa and fireplace-equipped rooms and suites, this one-of-a-kind wellness-centric hotel feels like your very own private oasis in the heart of Midtown Manhattan.

With rates starting at nearly $2,000 per night, it’s one of the priciest places to stay in the Big Apple.

The World’s Best Award -winning Aman New York is beloved among T+L editors and readers alike, and it’s easy to see why. Housed in the 102-year-old landmark Crown Building, the 2023 It List recipient boasts an underground Jazz Club and a 14th-floor Garden Terrace with a fire pit and blue stone-covered fountain that feels worlds away from always-bustling Midtown.

"I was most taken with the fireplaces in each of the 83 rooms. They’re flanked by two windows, which legendary Aman designer Jean-Michel Gathy kept from an early iteration of the Crown Building’s design," said T+L senior editor Maya Kachroo-Levine of her 2022 stay. They’re also all fully soundproofed.

But perhaps the hotel’s best — and most noteworthy — feature is the three-floor spa, which features a 65-foot-long, fireplace-lined pool plus two “spa houses” with expansive outdoor terraces, cold plunges, hot baths, and either a wood-clad sauna or hammam.

  • Standout amenities: Access to the 24,000-square-foot spa and wellness center, tranquil 14th-floor terrace, complimentary house car service, daily breakfast, butler service
  • Location: Midtown
  • Starting rates: From $1,950 per night

Nine Orchard

Mariah Tyler

Also available to book at Expedia.com and Hotels.com

This trendy boutique hotel is in one of NYC’s buzziest neighborhoods, and the on-site food and drink offerings are top-notch.

First-time visitors to NYC may prefer a more centrally located hotel.

Nine Orchard seamlessly blends old and new with beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture, design-forward rooms equipped with specially commissioned work from local artists, and bespoke speakers programmed with curated music stations.

The landmark building in which the hotel is housed has been restored to its former Neo-Renaissance glory with replicated clocks, intricate millwork, and a 60-foot domed rooftop tempietto, a little temple. The 12-story boutique hotel — named on our 2023 It List highlighting the best new hotels — is also a favorite among in-the-know locals, who can be spotted sipping martinis in the late-night haunt, Swan Room or noshing on steak au poivre and oysters Rockefeller at the upscale bistro, Corner Bar.

Fora travel advisor Julia Flood especially recommends the property for folks who “want to immerse themselves in the Lower East Side vibe, just around the corner from the infamous/iconic Dimes Square,” an artsy micro-neighborhood between the Lower East Side and Chinatown. Plus, she says, “The hotel feels like you’re visiting your trendy New York pal (the rooms are even numbered like NYC apartments - 5C, 10E)."

  • Standout amenities: Fantastic food and beverage options, in-room speakers
  • Location: Lower East Side
  • Starting rates: From $595 per night

The Ned NoMad

Alessandra Amodio

Also available to book at Hotels.com

Teeming with historic charm, this 167-key hotel still feels like a hidden gem yet to be uncovered by the masses.

Some on-site drinking and dining venues are reserved for club members, which means access is subject to availability.

Housed in a 1903 Beaux-Arts building in the buzzy NoMad neighborhood, 2023 It List winner Ned NoMad is best described as part boutique hotel and part membership club.

The interiors ooze with art deco charm. Think glimmering chandeliers, elaborate mosaic flooring, ornate crown molding, and jewel-hued upholstery. The impressive art collection features over 300 works from contemporary artists like Laurie Simmons and Hank Willis Thomas.

Cecconi’s on the first floor serves up house-made pasta and wood-fired pizzas, while the Little Ned Bar is the place to see and be seen while sipping martinis. Finally, you can retreat to one of 167 charming rooms, all with art deco-inspired touches and many with sumptuous clawfoot soaking tubs.

  • Standout amenities: A fan-favorite on-site Italian restaurant, small gym
  • Location: NoMad
  • Starting rates: From $588 per night

Hotel Chelsea

Annie Schlechter / Hotel Chelsea

Also available to book at TripAdvisor.com

This iconic and historic hotel radiates charm and character.

The high-energy property may not be ideal for travelers seeking seclusion.

“If you’re looking for history, fashion, art, and music in one hotel, that would be Hotel Chelsea,” says Fora travel advisor Nicole Canal of this It List property. The historic hotel — which recently reopened following a 12-year closure — has hosted famous folks like Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, and Bob Dylan.

Although many rooms have been redesigned, you can still find an original carved fireplace from 1884, paintings from Stanley Bard (the hotel’s previous owner), and a gorgeous wrought-iron spiral staircase above the front desk. You can choose from rooms, suites, and spacious apartments to accommodate groups small and large. Plus, says Canal, each accommodation has “a unique design with art on the walls to remind you of the history of this famous hotel that dates back to the 1800s.”

Don’t miss the on-site Spanish restaurant, El Quijote. In 1969, music icons Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix enjoyed sangria and shrimp here before driving to Woodstock. The Cafe Chelsea is popular amongst locals and well-heeled travelers, as is the European-style lobby bar. Sneak off to the spa for some much-needed R&R; amenities include a Swedish sauna, steam and rain showers, soaking tubs, and a cozy fireplace-equipped lounge.

  • Standout amenities: Historic drinking and dining venues, rooftop spa and fitness center
  • Location: Chelsea
  • Starting rates: From $220 per night

The Wall Street Hotel

Greg Powers / The Wall Street Hotel

Mixing business with pleasure, this sleek NYC hotel in the heart of the Financial District (FiDi for short) offers sophisticated rooms and suites with a residential feel.

Although there is a small — albeit impressive — gym, there is no spa, which may be a turn-off for wellness-seekers.

Voted the best hotel in New York City by T+L readers as part of the 2023 World’s Best Awards, The Wall Street Hotel is well worth visiting when in the Big Apple, even if just for a quick martini at the bar, Lounge on Pearl, or a meal at La Marchande restaurant helmed by Michelin-starred chef, John Fraser.

Housed inside the Tontine Building, the former New York Stock Exchange headquarters, this family-owned property is especially popular with business travelers given its convenient location. Still, leisure travelers will also enjoy a stay here. Attention to detail is apparent: Each of the 180 guest rooms features heated flooring, Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth speakers, and treat-filled bar carts. "The bar, Lounge on Pearl, with its NYC murals and turquoise carpet, is full of cozy corners perfect for mingling with a cocktail, but you'll definitely want to stay the night. The rooms are spacious and designed in calming tones, with impressive marble bathrooms and soaking tubs," said T+L senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero . "It's just what FiDi needed."

Also noteworthy: The hotel has a partnership with the Billion Oyster Project , a non-profit working to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. You can donate at checkout or purchase oyster-inspired gifts (a portion of the proceeds are donated to the org).

  • Standout amenities:  Buzzy all-day bar, in-room bar carts stocked with goodies, shoe shine, bike and scooter rentals, 24-hour fitness center
  • Location: Financial District
  • Starting rates: From $499 per night

The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel

Durston Saylor / The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

A stay at this ultra-luxe hotel feels like a trip back to a bygone era with its art deco-inspired design elements and iconic piano bar, Bemelmans.

Only one subway (the 6) is within easy walking distance (under ten minutes).

According to Fora travel advisor Molla Arena , this Upper East Side mainstay exudes timeless elegance and serves as “the quintessential destination for a traditional luxury stay in NYC.”  While you can’t go wrong booking any of the 192 rooms and suites, the latter truly stand out. Many have whimsical murals, soaking tubs, and living rooms with city views.

The service is just as spectacular as the accommodations: Doormen dressed in top hats and white gloves greet guests, and the staff inside are equally warm and charismatic — and not at all stuffy. The World’s Best Award -winning hotel is also known for its iconic bar, Bemelmans, where you can sip some of Manhattan’s best martinis while listening to live music and admiring murals from none other than Ludwig Bemelmans, the artist behind the “Madeline” children’s books.

  • Standout amenities: Beautiful spa, salon, and fitness center; four on-site bars and restaurants, including the historic Bemelmans Bar; Rosewood Explorers children’s programming and amenities
  • Location: Upper East Side
  • Starting rates: From $795

The Plaza Hotel

The Plaza New York

This Central Park South landmark oozes elegance at every turn, from the elaborate bathrooms to the glamorous Palm Court to the gilded lobby.

Despite its location just steps from Central Park, few rooms and suites have full park views.

The Plaza comes to mind when I think of luxury hotels in New York City. A New York City landmark in its own right, the World’s Best Award-winning hotel — which has been featured in films like “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Home Alone 2” — has 282 rooms and suites. Each features lavish beds with elaborate gold headboards and bathrooms with mosaic floors, walls with gilded floral motifs, 24-karat gold-plated fixtures, and hand-crafted white marble vanities — some of the most beautiful I've ever seen.

"The Plaza has some fantastic one-of-a-kind suites. I stayed in the fabulous Jazz Age-inspired Fitzgerald Suite during my last stay, and the details were exquisite," said Rhodes. The pink-hued Eloise Suite, for example, comes with toys, dolls, clothing, and themed gifts and is a little girl’s dream come true. Other highlights include afternoon tea or Champagne in the Palm Court and the fourth-floor Guerlain Spa.

  • Standout amenities: Stunning spa, beautiful drinking and dining venues, white-glove butler service available upon request, house car service
  • Starting rates: From $895 per night

The Pierre Hotel

Donna Dotan / The Pierre, A Taj Hotel

This iconic Upper East Side haunt offers luxurious rooms and suites plus indulgent drinking and dining options well worth the splurge.

Standard room categories have interior views.

Housed in a 41-story landmark, The Pierre Hotel is, in a word, glamorous. I was blown away by how friendly and conscientious the door attendants were; when my traveling partner and I pulled up, two immediately greeted us, opened the car door, and grabbed our bags so we wouldn’t need to carry anything into the hotel. After a quick check-in process, we were whisked up to our room. Pro tip: For a worth-it splurge, book a room with Central Park views.

Before heading down to an indulgent dinner at the on-site Perrine restaurant, we wandered through the romantic Rotunda, which boasts a fresco-covered ceiling reminiscent of what you’d find in Italy. The Two E Bar/Lounge serves afternoon tea in a sophisticated setting, and it’s also a great spot to listen to live jazz.

  • Standout amenities: Turndown service,  house car service, daily tea and coffee service in the lobby, two fine-dining restaurants, a swanky bar and lounge for afternoon tea and live jazz
  • Starting rates: From $791 per night

The Whitby Hotel

This design-forward Midtown Manhattan hotel has a splashy, colorful aesthetic that will delight travelers of all ages.

There is only one on-site bar and restaurant.

“The Whitby is the perfect location for a first-time trip to NYC,” says Fora travel advisor Julia Flood . Its Midtown Manhattan location is within easy walking distance to Central Park, the shops on Fifth Avenue, Times Square, and the Theater District. She continues, “Admittedly, oftentimes Midtown can be seen as boring or corporate; however, the Whitby is anything but that!” The travel pro describes every corner of the hotel as “exquisite” and notes that “the attention to detail and service are excellent.”

The 86 rooms and suites, designed by Firmdale Hotels founder and creative director Kit Kemp, feature a touch of fun and whimsy with bold color schemes, eye-catching tufted headboards, and patterned throw pillows and seating. Afternoon tea is served in an equally striking space, while the bright and airy bar and restaurant is, per Flood, “the place to be in Midtown Manhattan!”

  • Standout amenities: Buzzy bar and restaurant, gym, fully stocked mini-bar, screening room,  afternoon tea service (added cost), drawing room
  • Starting rates: From $925 per night

Loews Regency New York

With sleek rooms and splashy suites, the Loews Regency New York offers a posh place for all types of travelers — families, businesspeople, and couples — to rest their heads in one of NYC’s toniest neighborhoods.

The hotel does provide complimentary morning coffee, but there are no in-room coffee makers — a small but essential perk for some.

Perched along Park Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the Loews Regency New York is a favorite among frequent and first-time NYC visitors. The 379 spacious guest rooms are decorated in a neutral color palette with pops of pale lavender and mineral green. There are also 58 suites, many with private balconies or terraces. Six are specially curated by designers like Nate Berkus and Meyer Davis.

The Regency Bar & Grill serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a sophisticated setting; the Sant Ambrose Coffee Bar offers java, pastries, sandwiches, and the like. Before or after heading out to go sightseeing or shopping, pop into the on-site Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa for some pampering.

  • Standout amenities: Expansive fitness center, 10,000-square-foot spa and salon, complimentary morning coffee, free shoeshine, turndown service upon request,  24-hour room service, children’s toys and games
  • Starting rates: From $599 per night

The Greenwich Hotel

Despite the property’s central Tribeca location, its exclusive guests-only spaces — including a drawing room, courtyard, and lobby — will make you feel like you have the hotel all to yourself.

The pool and fitness center are underground, so don’t expect sweeping views as you break a sweat.

“If your fingers are crossed to bump into your favorite celebrity, The Greenwich Hotel is where to be,” says Canal of this five-star hotel. Spearheaded by none other than Robert DeNiro, the property “hosts high-profile guests often enough that they had to put into place a rule about photographing their public spaces.”

Those craving a serene retreat from the city's hustle and bustle can head to the on-site Japanese-inspired Shubui Spa. Canal also recommends the buzzy on-site restaurant Locanda Verde, which serves up Italian staples like homemade pasta. Last but not least, the hotel is home to 73 beautiful rooms (each individually designed), 11 suites, and two penthouses.

  • Standout amenities: Tranquil spa, packing and unpacking service upon request, house car service, lush courtyard, swimming pool, gym, great restaurant
  • Starting rates: From $825 per night

Park Lane New York

Despite its swanky location on Billionaire’s Row, this recently renovated property is anything but stuffy; instead, it offers you a more laid-back (though still luxurious) experience than you’d find at neighboring hotels.

The property is more contemporary than the nearby Plaza Hotel and The Pierre but lacks amenities like a spa or swimming pool.

Located along Billionaire’s Row, the 47-story Park Lane New York underwent significant renovations a few years back. Its new playful — albeit still sophisticated — aesthetic offers whimsical murals hand-painted by local artist collective En Viu across the rooms and public spaces. There are 610 rooms; even the standard ones offer sweeping city or park views, plush linens, a window seating area, and striking black-and-white-hued bathrooms.

The on-site food and drink offerings make this hotel a true stand-out. The stylish, indoor-outdoor Darling is the only rooftop bar on Central Park South, and it serves up specialty cocktails and gourmet bites like seafood towers. There’s also the Parisian-inspired Rose Lane, an 80-seat lobby bar complete with an outdoor promenade, and the glamorous Park Lane Cafe serves dinner and drinks on the second floor.

  • Standout amenities: The only rooftop bar on Central Park South, 24-hour room service
  • Starting rates: From $350 per night

The Lowell Hotel

Live like a (well-heeled) local on the Upper East Side in this fashionable hotel, where many suites have wood-burning fireplaces.

While this hotel is undoubtedly luxurious, it’s not at all flashy.

Check into The Lowell Hotel “when you want to feel like you have a parallel life where you have a swanky pied-à-terre on the Upper East Side,” says Flood, who describes the 2022 World’s Best Award-winning property as “old-school chic New York in the best way possible.”

Most of the rooms inside this landmark, 17-story hotel are curated by Michael S. Smith, the same designer responsible for the 2010 makeover of the Oval Office. Think custom headboards, polished oak floors, and antique rugs. Some units offer rare, ultra-luxe features like wood-burning fireplaces and manicured terraces.

In the mornings, take the lobby's grand marble staircase to the second floor to enjoy breakfast in the Pembroke Room. Majorelle, which offers year-round outdoor seating, is a popular spot for lunch and dinner. Alternatively, sip martinis in style at Jacques Bar or unwind at the guests-only Club Room.

  • Standout amenities: Posh restaurant with year-round outdoor seating, stylish bar, fitness center, turndown service, guest-only lounge
  • Starting rates: From $785 per night

The Baccarat Hotel

Eric Laignel / Baccarat Hotel

At The Baccarat Hotel, no detail is too small, down to the branded toiletries and the South of France-inspired swimming pool's crystal accents.

Although children are allowed, the property definitely caters to grown-ups with amenities like a serene spa and striking — and oh-so-buzzy — cocktail bar.

Step inside this jewel-box hotel in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and be dazzled. The gorgeous Grand Salon glitters with elegant crystal chandeliers, crystal animal sculptures, and bright red floral arrangements — and that’s just the beginning.

The buzzy bar area is anchored by a 60-foot bar and boasts design touches like natural wood walls and black-and-white tiled flooring. Here, drinks are served in stunning Baccarat crystal, and people-watching is top-notch. On my last visit, I also enjoyed afternoon tea (though I splurged and upgraded to Champagne) in the aforementioned Grand Salon.

The rooms feature a clean, neutral color palette with pops of black and silver and, of course, Baccarat stemware for sipping wine in a plush bathrobe. Despite the pull of the accommodations, I spent most of my free time enjoying the serene Spa de La Mer and indoor heated pool area, which is lined with plush cabanas and has chic checkered flooring.

  • Standout amenities: Pool, spa, art collection, house car service, three restaurants and bars, elegant afternoon tea (for an added cost)
  • Starting rates: From $1095 per night

The William Vale

Read McKendree / The William Vale

Also available to book at Expedia.com and TripAdvisor.com

All rooms in this trendy Williamsburg hotel offer open-air balconies and sweeping city views.

This property is in Brooklyn, so you should consider staying on the other side of the East River if you want to spend most of your time in Manhattan.

Make your way into trendy Williamsburg to stay at The William Vale, which made not one but two 2022 World’s Best Awards lists, coming in at No. 3 in the best NYC hotels category and No. 14 in the best city hotels in the continental U.S. category . Like the hotel’s exterior, the rooms are contemporary and striking — floor-to-ceiling windows and open-air balconies offer plenty of natural light and glorious views.

I’ve dined at Leuca, the on-site Italian restaurant, and have nothing but great things to say about the food (split the wood-fired pizza and bolognese) and the space (casual yet elegant). Post-dinner, head up to Westlight, the rooftop bar serving small plates and cocktails, though note that it tends to get (very) crowded around dusk.

In the winter, the fourth-floor terrace transforms into a spa with wooden barrel saunas and cedar hot tubs. In the summer, you can enjoy the sparkling swimming pool.

  • Standout amenities: Swimming pool (seasonal), winter spa (seasonal), fitness center, rooftop bar
  • Location: Williamsburg
  • Starting rates: From $185 per night

Wythe Hotel

Housed in a 117-year-old building that was once a factory, the Wythe Hotel is now an industrial-chic haunt known for its two top-rated restaurants.

There is no on-site spa, which may be a turn-off for wellness seekers.

The Wythe Hotel, a historic factory-turned-boutique hotel, is named after the street where it's located. Its 70 rooms offer exposed brick, original 100-plus-year-old timbers, expansive windows, high ceilings, and, in most cases, skyline views. Bright and airy lofts provide extra space, while bunk bed rooms are well-suited for families and groups.

When you're not out and about enjoying the neighborhood — or venturing into Manhattan — sip drinks and indulge in seafood-forward fare at the sixth-floor Bar Blondeau alongside locals. The all-day restaurant, Le Crocodile, serves fresh-baked pastries at breakfast, salads and sandwiches during lunch, and satisfying dinners like roast chicken. Around the hotel, you’ll also find a collection of gallery-worthy sketches and works from local contemporary artists.

  • Standout amenities: Impressive contemporary art collection, two chic restaurants and bars
  • Starting rates: From $400 per night

This nostalgia-inducing hotel — the only hotel on JFK International Airport's grounds — is beloved by design lovers and history buffs, thanks to its midcentury modern aesthetic and on-site exhibits.

It can be noisy as it's close to the terminal and the runway.

The TWA Hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport feels like a fun blast from the past. The hotel is housed in the former TWA flight center, which was constructed in 1962. Today, it's a nostalgic tour-de-force and JFK’s only in-airport hotel. The property is decked out in vintage TWA travel posters and there are exhibits displaying decades-old playing cards given out as in-flight amenities, old TWA uniforms, and vintage furnishings from the TWA headquarters.

The 512 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, blackout curtains, midcentury modern furnishings, terrazzo-tiled bathrooms, and bespoke work desks. You can also choose from six food and beverage options, including a food hall and a 1958 plane-turned-cocktail bar. The rooftop pool, which overlooks the runway and is open year-round, is the icing on the cake.

"I love it," says Paul Brady , T+L's news director. "The vibe is amazing, the food's pretty good — Jean-Georges V. in the house — the rooftop pool is incredible with tarmac views, and there's a bar inside a plane."

  • Standout amenities: Year-round rooftop pool, six bars and restaurants, expansive fitness center
  • Location: Jamaica, Queens
  • Starting rates: From $249 per night

SoHo Grand Hotel

Soho Grand Hotel

Also available to book at TripAdvisor.com and Expedia.com

This SoHo hotel offers everything you could want or need right on site: hip bars and restaurants, exciting nightlife, stylish rooms and suites, and even complimentary bike rentals for off-site exploring.

The bars, especially the beloved Grand Bar & Salon, can get crowded, making it challenging to snag a seat.

“The Soho Grand Hotel is chic, sexy, and quintessential SoHo,” says Fora travel advisor Angela Marini . As such, guests and locals alike flock to this World’s Best Award-winning hotel to see and be seen. Marini is quick to call out the property’s buzzy vibe, especially in the Grand Bar & Salon, which teems with DJ-fueled energy in the evenings.

Don't sleep on the other on-site venues: The Club Room offers live music and dining Wednesdays through Saturdays from 6:30 p.m. through 10:30 p.m., followed by DJs and dancing from 10:30 p.m. until closing; seasonal open-air eatery Gilligan’s serves locally sourced seafood and refreshing drinks; and the SoHo Diner is a classic diner.

After a fun-filled evening of drinking, dining, and dancing, you can head to your room or suite for a reprieve. Even entry-level accommodations wow with sophisticated weave-textured walls, vintage crystal sconces, headboards with bronze detailing, and bathrooms equipped with subway tiles and aviary wallpaper courtesy of famed New York cartoonist Saul Steinberg.

  • Standout amenities: Four bars and restaurants, 24-hour fitness center, shoeshine (upon request), complimentary access to The Roxy Cinema at sister property Roxy Hotel, bike rentals
  • Location: SoHo
  • Starting rates: From $187 per night

Refinery Hotel

This hip boutique hotel near the Empire State Building has a rich history.

It can get loud in the evenings due to the on-site bars and bustling Midtown location.

Housed in a 1912 neo-Gothic tower, the Refinery Hotel has a fascinating history; before opening as a hotel, it was a hat factory and a Prohibition-era tea room. "I love the hotel's central location — it's ideal for tourists who want to see it all when they visit the city," says Rhodes.

The industrial-chic rooms come with 12-foot-tall concrete ceilings, dark-brushed oak floors, striking artwork, and spacious bathrooms. The first floor boasts a jazz bar and restaurant, and the rooftop offers picture-perfect views of the Empire State Building.

"Don't forget to check the hotel's 'Offers' tab to see if they have any unique experiences available when you visit. Last year, I had a fun Succession -themed staycation at the hotel, complete with in-room caviar service," notes Rhodes.

  • Standout amenities: Three bars and restaurants, fitness center, complimentary coffee service in the lobby, free glass of wine or bottled water upon arrival
  • Starting rates: From $492 per night

Pendry Manhattan West

This sleek hotel exudes cool and calm — and the on-site drinking and dining options are spectacular.

The hotel doesn't have quite as many amenities as others on this list.

Located within the swanky Manhattan West development, the Pendry Manhattan West brings California cool to the Big Apple through design elements like lush greenery, modern furnishings, and light wood accents.

You'll feel instantly at ease upon entering the hotel, which is housed in a 23-story glass tower. Snag a seat by the cracking fireplace or post up at the ground-floor Bar Pendry or the fourth-floor Chez Zou with a cocktail or two. Then, it’s off to Zou Zou’s, which serves incredible Eastern Mediterranean cuisine (order the whipped ricotta dip and Moroccan fried chicken and thank me later). Each room and suite features floor-to-ceiling windows, and the latter offers free-standing tubs and separate living rooms.

  • Standout amenities: 24-hour fitness center, five bars and restaurants
  • Location: Midtown West
  • Starting rates: From $803 per night

Know Before You Go

Location, location, location.

According to T+L A-List travel advisor and Fora co-founder Henley Vazquez , “Location is huge when you're picking a place to stay in the city.” For example, if you’re looking for a “quiet place to recharge,” consider staying somewhere uptown, removed from the hustle and bustle of Midtown. Otherwise, if you want to “be in the mix and stay out till 3 a.m.,” the pro recommends you find “a cool place downtown where everything is right outside your door."

Consider Your Must-have Amenities

“Hotel amenities should not be overlooked," Canal says. It’s worth listing your desired amenities: an on-site spa, pool, fitness center, complimentary breakfast, turndown service, and so on. Additionally, with so many hotel options, finding the perfect hotel to suit your needs can be overwhelming; however, writing out your requirements will help automatically narrow your list of contenders.

Determine Your Hotel Budget

Let’s face it: New York City isn’t cheap, so it’s crucial to establish a budget for your accommodations ahead of time. Fora travel advisor Amna Ismail notes that “NYC offers a wide range of hotels with varying price points." To get the most bang for your buck, consider visiting in the off-season when hotel rates tend to be at their lowest.

Severe weather threat lingers in mid-Atlantic as storm system begins final leg of trip across US

A storm system that has stirred up severe weather across the country this week is on its final leg, with thunderstorms hugging the east coast of the u.s..

The severe weather threat shifts to the East Coast on Wednesday, placing portions of the mid-Atlantic states and Florida at risk of damaging winds, large hail and a couple of tornadoes.

Severe storms threaten Virginia, Florida on Wednesday

The severe weather threat shifts to the East Coast on Wednesday, placing portions of the mid-Atlantic states and Florida at risk of damaging winds, large hail and a couple of tornadoes.

WASHINGTON – A severe weather outbreak that caused damage from Texas to the Ohio Valley and the Southeast and led to the death of one person in Kentucky continued for the third straight day Wednesday. This time, the worst weather happened along the East Coast, particularly in parts of Virginia and Florida .

Due to atmospheric conditions not being as conducive for severe weather, chances for damaging winds , large hail and tornadoes are lower than Monday and Tuesday.

"So, we go from a (Level) 4 out of 5 risk now to a 2 out of 5," FOX Weather Meteorologist Steve Bender said. "It doesn't mean you let off the gas pedal. You still think about what those threats can be."

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center highlighted two separate areas as having the greatest risk of severe weather Wednesday – one stretching from Delaware to northern North Carolina and another extending across North and Central Florida.

The majority of the storms are expected to move off the East Coast by sunset, but the winter weather on the northern end of the storm system will linger through at least Thursday.

April is usually 2nd-busiest month for severe weather

The fourth month of the year typically sees an increase in severe weather outbreaks as seasonal air masses clash over the eastern half of the country. In fact, April is usually the second busiest for tornadoes , only outdone by May.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

A global climate pattern known as El Niño is known to clamp down on severe weather outbreaks in the Lower 48.

The year seems to be following the norms set during previous El Niño events.

Data from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center shows tornado activity for the year is below average, while hail and damaging wind reports are closer to average.
