Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA downtown city skyline on Lake Michigan at twilight.

Located on Lake Michigan, the largest lake in the United States, Milwaukee is easy to explore; everything seems to be only a 5-minute drive away. Known as Brew City and home to the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team, no trip to Milwaukee is complete without tasting its beer heritage. With more than 200 breweries, there are brewery tours for every palette, from micro to macro and fruit beers to pale ales. Winters in Milwaukee can be harsh and long, so the most popular time to visit is in the summer months or fall. Summer is high season, with a multitude of neighborhood festivals, outdoor concerts and ethnic celebrations, like German Fest in July, honoring the city's largest immigrant group. Summer excitement reaches its peak at the end of June with Summerfest, a massive and affordable music festival.

Get cultured at the Milwaukee Museum Campus

Looking for family-friendly activities in Milwaukee? Head toward the city's lakefront museum campus to Discovery World, Milwaukee's world-class science museum. If you have littler ones, stroll across the street to the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Just north of Discovery World is the architecturally impressive Milwaukee Art Museum , a modern masterpiece designed by Santiago Calatrava. Time your visit to witness the spectacle of the building's wings (large movable sunscreens) opening and closing at 10 a.m., noon or closing time. If you want to feel like you're actually sleeping in an art museum, book a room at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel, which is located in the heart of downtown. Guests delight in the art exhibits on display throughout the hotel and applaud the in-room vintage record players. If you enjoy a martini with a view, consider the Blu lounge at the historic Pfister Hotel , offering panoramic views, cocktails and more from the 23rd floor.

Home to the main campus of the University of Wisconsin and its lovable mascot Bucky the Badger, Madison is more than just a cool college town. Activists and incoming college students appreciate that Madison, about 80 miles east of Milwaukee, has been the scene of many a protest, whether against the Vietnam War or in favor of marijuana legalization. What's more, the University of Wisconsin – Madison Memorial Union on the shores of Lake Mendota is a favorite for students and locals; grab a brat and brew and enjoy the view. The 72-room Graduate Madison is an easy walk to campus, dining, shopping and nightlife. Badger red is the hotel's unifying color palette, and guests give the hotel high marks for its nostalgic decor and artwork, including collages of political buttons, a nod to the town's legacy of social activism.

Try the cheese

Top things to do in Wisconsin

Wisconsinites are lovingly referred to as Cheeseheads. If you're looking to experience more than just the squeaky cheese curds the state is famous for, visitors recommend stopping by the Fromagination cheese store for its ambiance, multitude of options and generous samples. Billing itself as the capital of cheese, this shop is a must-see for cheese lovers, featuring dozens of one-of-a-kind artisanal Wisconsin varieties. And if you're in Madison on a Saturday morning between April and November, mosey over to the Capitol building to shop. The Dane County Farmers' Market is the country's largest producer-only farmers market, a great way to take yourself on a food tour of the finest Wisconsin farmers have to offer.

Lake Geneva

Lakeshore

Located near the Wisconsin-Illinois border, 7 miles north of the border and about 50 miles southeast of Milwaukee, Lake Geneva is popular for weekend getaways, with visitors describing it as the "Newport of the Midwest" for its opulent lakefront mansions. You can glimpse that luxurious lifestyle while walking the Geneva Lakeshore Path, a 25-mile walkway that circles the lake, bringing you through the backyards of opulent estates. Circling the entire lake would take all day, but you can pick a section and go for a jog or a stroll. Keep in mind that the path is not suited for strollers or bikes. Being home or second home to many of the Midwest's elite, the town is filled with great restaurants, shops and fun-filled activities throughout the year. Tourists descend on Lake Geneva during the summer season to rent boats, but fall and spring are also magnificent for weekend getaways. A warm-weather visit calls for a stay at The Abbey Resort, the only lodging directly on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Spend a winter weekend at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa

Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is one of the best choices for a winter visit to Lake Geneva, with a bevy of amenities and a modest ski hill. The resort's hill is decidedly not the Rocky Mountains, but there are three chair lifts, two carpet lifts, 20 runs and a terrain park. After a day on the slopes, skiers like to warm up with a hot toddy around the outdoor fire pit at the resort's Embers Terrace. Kids can dive into the fun at Grand Geneva's Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark while the adults chill out in the resort's world-class spa. Regardless of where you stay, winter in Lake Geneva means it's time for their annual one-of-a-kind Winterfest, one of the country's largest ice sculpture festivals.

New Englanders have their clambakes. The closest thing to that in the Midwest is the Door County fish boil, a one-of-a-kind culinary spectacle. It's one of the top things to do in this peninsula. A Scandinavian tradition, fish boils are a way of cooking fish in a large cooking pot over an open fire. Part of the experience is coming early, sitting around the fire and watching the hour-long cooking process, led by a Boil Master who serves as both chef and entertainer. When the food is almost ready, the Boil Master alerts diners that the "boil-over" is about to begin. Kerosene is then thrown onto the fire, making for a fiery finish. Fish boils traditionally include potatoes, coleslaw and classic Door County cherry pie for dessert. Though restaurants from the southernmost Sturgeon Bay to the north tip of the peninsula offer up these unique dinners, visitors give the White Gull Inn some of the best reviews.

Explore the surrounding state parks

Cave Point is part of Whitefish Dunes State Park on the Wisonconsin penuisula

Biking and hiking Whitefish Dunes State Park and Potawatomi State Park are some of the top outdoor activities in Door County. Kayaking the Lake Michigan lakefront, where you can explore the caves and coves and view the shore scenery that can only be seen from the water, is another favorite outdoor activity. Door County Kayak Tours gets high ratings for their friendly, informative guides. When the weather is warm enough, travelers can camp at the area's state park to save some time and be best prepared to catch a sunrise over Lake Michigan.

Things to do in Wisconsin for summer 2021: guide to concerts, festivals, farmers markets, state parks and camping

Sweet summertime is back in Wisconsin.

And this summer will be sweeter than ever, as many of the events and activities that were canceled or restricted last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic are back.

From  exploring dozens of state parks  and thousands of lakes  to   enjoying free music outside and movies under the stars , there's plenty to do in Wisconsin this summer.

Here are some ideas for making the most of the precious few months of warm weather. Check back for more as the summer goes on.

Wisconsin state parks, campgrounds, beer gardens, summer tourist attractions

100 things to do in Wisconsin in the summer : From outdoor adventures to historical sites, there's something for every interest on this list.

Wisconsin bucket list: Every Wisconsinite should put these 20 quintessential places on their must-visit list.

10 of the best Wisconsin state parks to visit this summer :  From popular hot spots like Devil's Lake to hard-to-get-to gems like Rock Island, the state is packed with parks  to visit in the summer.

Wisconsin's least popular state parks offer more than a quiet experience away from crowds :  While they might not be as flashy as Devil’s Lake , these parks offer unique natural and in some cases historical experiences, without the crowds of the state’s more popular parks.

Here's where you can stay on an island in Wisconsin :  For the first time in more than a year, campers pitched their tents on the shore of Rock Island off the tip of Door County on Memorial Day weekend. It’s not exactly a Caribbean island experience, but it is a very Wisconsin island experience — and it’s not the only one you can have in the state. Here are some other places you can camp or stay on in an island in Wisconsin.

These Wisconsin tourist attractions were closed in 2020 but are open again :  Here’s a look at some Wisconsin spots that were closed last year but are opening to visitors for the summer of 2021.

If the campground is full, your local brewery might have a spot to park your RV — for free : This different kind of camping experience is made possible through Harvest Hosts , a membership program that allows RVers to dry camp (no hookups) for free at  breweries, wineries, farms, golf courses, museums and other attractions around Wisconsin.

Here are beaches you can visit in southeastern Wisconsin this summer :  The state has more than 1,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline and more than 15,000 inland lakes that offer plenty of space to relax and swim safely distanced from others.

Head west to explore three overlooked Wisconsin travel spots :  If you want a little taste of the mountains on a getaway, you have to head west. But not as far as you think.

8 scenic and historical train rides in Wisconsin :  Scenic drives are great, but for a more unique and historic way to see Wisconsin landscapes, there's an old kid on the block: a scenic train ride.

Wisconsin pizza farms are a summer must-do : Pizza farms are about as farm-to-table as you can get, with farms serving up wood-fired pizza made with ingredients grown on site.

5 Wisconsin beer gardens worth a stop while traveling : These Wisconsin breweries offer great outdoor spaces to enjoy a beer in the summer.

Wacky roadside attractions in Wisconsin : From the world's largest fiberglass cow to a giant ball of twine, check out these one-of-a-kind spots in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin isn't all flat. Check out these huge rock formations in Adams County :  If you thought mesas and buttes were solely icons of the American Southwest, you haven’t been to Wisconsin's Adams County. The county in central Wisconsin is home to more than 20 named rock formations that in geological terms are mesas or buttes, but are more typically referred to as mounds or bluffs.

50 of the best national scenic trail miles in Wisconsin : The Badger State is home to 1,400 miles of national scenic trails: the 1,200-mile Ice Age Trail and 200 miles of the 4,600-mile North Country Trail. Here are some of the best segments to explore.

5 bike trails near rivers for a pedal-paddle trip :  If you like to kayak or canoe rivers, one of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to get back to your starting point when you’re finished. One option is a bike shuttle, and it's even easier if there's a trail nearby.

16 Midwest national parks within gas-tank distance of Milwaukee : While national park sites out West might get more attention, the Midwest has its own gems, including the country's only national lakeshores.

Door County bucket list: 15 things you have to do on the peninsula : From fish boils to the Cana Island Lighthouse, check these things off your Door County bucket list on your next visit.

There'll actually be some big concerts in Wisconsin this summer. Check out these 18 shows through August :  The summer concert season, traditionally packed with thousands of shows across the state, will certainly be light this year, but there are some big acts planning to play Wisconsin through August.

Marcus Center expands programming with new jazz and dance series : With new jazz and dance series featuring high-profile artists, many bookings of performers of color, and a set of school group matinees, the Marcus Performing Arts Center's 2021-'22 season reflects key priorities established by CEO Kendra Whitlock Ingram when she started that job, right before the COVID-10 pandemic began.

Rep’s free audio walking tour reflects on themes of race and identity : A rom-com, a drama, a ghost story and a historical comedy — that’s the emotional journey one can expect to have while taking the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s new walking audio tour, known as SoundStage MKE.

Things to do with kids

100 things to do with your kids even if they aren't vaccinated yet :  Summer is here again. Because we're still in the middle of the COVID pandemic, it isn't the summer we want it to be, but it has the potential to be a significantly more fun summer than last year.

Seeing The Rotary Holiday Lights Is One Of The Best Holiday Events In Wisconsin

I couldn’t include a list of events in Wisconsin without including a Christmas event. Taking place in La Crosse it is the undisputed king of holiday light displays.

3,000 volunteers are responsible for putting 3 million lights in Riverside Park along the Mississippi River to create a spectacular twinkling winter wonderland.

There is also a myriad of other festive activities to enjoy with Santa and his reindeer being the highlight. Oh, and they offer free smores around the fire pit. Yes, it would be rude not to, right?

And don’t forget the 140-foot Christmas tree which really is the icing on the cake.

The best thing about The Rotary Holiday Lights though is that it was designed to collect money to feed the hungry in the Coulee Region making it even more special.

Nearly 130,000 visitors flock to this mesmerizing event each year, it really is a wonderful event not to be missed. If you are looking for events in Wisconsin in December put this one high on your list.

Here are some more places you can celebrate Christmas in the Midwest if you are looking for ideas.

Extend your Christmas vacation with a stay at GrandStay Hotel & Suites La Crosse.

Packing List When Attending Events In Wisconsin

If you will be traveling, either by plane or by car to Wisconsin, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly.

A  concealed travel pouch  may be one of the most important items you bring along when attending any events in Wisconsin!

It is  always   important  to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

This  unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind.

You can place it under your clothes next to your body to carry your ID safely.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID sleeves are the perfect solution.

This configuration comes with enough credit card sleeves that the entire family would be protected. They are slim too, so they will easily fit into your pouch or wallet.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery .

This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

It can be used on a variety of phones, not just an iPhone as I have. And wow is it fast!

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking photos.

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my   Bobble filtration bottle . The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

And here are the carbon filter replacements.

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car.

Then this collapsible silicone foldable water bottle  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

As you can see when it comes to events in Wisconsin there are so many to choose from.

Whether you choose one of the adult events in Wisconsin or choose something more family-friendly I am certain you will have a great time.

Whether you are looking for events in Milwaukee or events in Madison I hope this list has helped you choose. Whichever event you choose have a great time and come back and tell me all about it.
