Zoolight Safari
Great for kids...dress warmly! The zoolight safari is really good, better than Boo at the Zoo in my opinion. We have also been during the day, but I have not been since the trails of Africa have opened.
Bham Zoo is great for our size town. They are doing a great job with renovations. It is sad the baby lions grew up so fast and are now moving away. The food is pretty good. Remember to bring your swimsuit to play in the splash pad area.
This is a small zoo, but they have a good selection and take good care of the animals. Wonderful for the kids, and the train ride is neat.
Love the new changes at the zoo and the new animals! Elephants and Rhinos now have more room. Kinda expensive unless you join
This zoo has improved tremendously over the past few years. We have now had a membership for the past two years and it has been worth every penny. When we moved to Birmingham in 2006, I vowed that I would never return there after my first visit because of the poor conditions the animals were forced to live in. Now, I'm impressed by every single visit at how much this zoo now has to offer. The exhibits are so much nicer and the animals seem much happier too.
the bird display with feeding was the highlight of the trip. Love that hands on. Most animals were asleep or not in their area. Water fountain was great for younger kids. bring extra clothes

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey visited a drive-thru safari south of Montgomery on Monday to meet several animals including her namesake, “Miss Kay,” a llama.
One of the oldest animal rights advocates in the country was hoping she reconsidered.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), in a letter to Ivey on Friday, asked the governor to cancel her visit to the Alabama Safari Park in Hope Hull.
Gina Maiola, a spokeswoman for Ivey, in a response said, “We don’t take advice from PETA.” The visit went on as planned.
The letter was sent to Ivey and accused the park’s ownership of operating roadside zoos around the nation that have been cited multiple times by federal authorities for a lack of basic animal care.
It also highlighted an inspection report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that lists several “critical” violations for handling animals at the Alabama park, a 350-acre outdoor venue that features a three-mile road where visitors can drive through, feed and see exotic animals as they roam free without traditional barriers found at most zoos.
According to the USDA’s 2023 report, “multiple animals were found deceased due to trauma or predation” including two llamas.
A female llama was found dead on Sept. 20, 2022, with the cause of death labeled as “other,” according to the report. The report says that during its investigation, the park’s assistant director said a field necropsy of the animal showed it died due to “extensive bleeding in the chest cavity caused by trauma.” The report says there were no records from the field necropsy.
A male llama was founded dead on Jan. 13, 2023, with its cause of death attributed to trauma. The animal had received extensive medical care prior to its death, the report says.

The USDA, in its report, urged the safari park to ensure that animals are handled “as expeditiously and carefully as possible in a manner that does not cause trauma, overheating, excessive cooling, behavioral stress, physical harm, or unnecessary discomfort.”
“Drive-thru roadside zoos, such as … Alabama Safari Park, often fail to properly monitor or provide appropriate veterinary care for the large number of animal exploited for profit at these facilities,” wrote Michelle Sinnott, director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement with PETA, to Ivey. “As Alabama’s governor, it’s crucial that you set an example for the state’s citizens by choosing to avoid roadside zoos.”
The letter to Ivey also cites a 2015 complaint filed by the USDA that details violations over a five-year span at multiple venues similar to the Alabama Safari Park. The parks are owned by Zoofari Parks and its CEO Eric Mogensen, who has over 50 years in the industry. Parks are also in Natural Bridge, Va.; Kaufman/Terrell, Texas; and Gulf Breeze, Fla.
Mogensen was assessed a $100,000 civil penalty to settle that case with the USDA, according to the PETA letter. Mogensen could not be reached Monday for comment.
Mogensen has been a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1983, according to the Alabama Safari Parks website . But PETA points out that the safari park is not accredited. The only accredited zoo in Alabama is the Birmingham Zoo, according to the organization’s website.

Ivey’s visit, and PETA’s letter, come less than a year after Harmony Park in New Hope – a drive-thru zoo similar to the Alabama Safari Park, located near Huntsville – abruptly closed after 30 years of business.
The closure occurred in May 2023, with little information on where the zoos animals were re-located.
The USDA had to step in and enforce regulations at that park a few years ago after a kangaroo at the park bit a 9-year-old girl, with the incident caught on video . The girl’s injuries required 14 stitches. The agency then ordered the park build a new barrier around the giraffe enclosure.
Similar concerns about a lack of giraffe enclosures exist at the Hope Hull park. According to the USDA’s report from August 2023, the kangaroo exhibit “does not have an adequate public barrier to protect the animals and the public.”
PETA, founded in 1980, has long been a watchdog group for animal health concerns at roadside zoos. Their antics have also been criticized by all sides – many believing them to extremists who seek attention by wearing elaborate costumes to draw attention to their causes during public protests.
But PETA has also led numerous reforms including the ending of animals in automobile crash tests, closing the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Circus, and exposing thousands of instances of animal cruelty across the world, according to a History Channel write-up.
This story was updated at 10 a.m. on April 9, 2024, to clarify the accreditation of the Alabama Safari Park.

Gov. Kay Ivey meets ‘Miss Kay’ the llama at Alabama Safari Park
MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Governor Kay Ivey made a very special appearance Monday at an Alabama animal sanctuary.
Gov. Ivey traveled a little ways from the state capital to visit Alabama Safari Park in Hope Hull. Here, she shares a name with one very lucky animal.
“Miss Kay” is a 3-month-old llama who lives on the safari. Park officials named the llama after the governor because of all she did to help them during the pandemic.
Gov. Ivey was also able to feed the giraffes during her visit of the park.
“I met with a baby llama named Miss Kay, and giraffes behind us. I fed them romaine lettuce,” Ivey said. “They’re very friendly, and they love folks.”
It was quite a special moment for the governor to spend time with the animals and her namesake: “Miss Kay” the llama.
