Payday at Augusta

A brief history of the Masters prize money payout

Masters 2023

during the final round of the 2023 Masters Tournament held in Augusta, GA at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 9, 2023.

If there’s any tournament in golf where how much the winner makes in prize money is ancillary to everything else that comes with claiming the title, it’s the Masters. The legacy of being one of the select golfers to own a green jacket and with it a spot in the Champions locker room, a seat at the Champions Dinner and a place in golf history, is worth more than the payout that winds up in their bank account—even with the staggering amounts that are being paid out at majors these days.

Make no mistake, however, those who shake the Augusta National chairman’s hand in Butler Cabin at the conclusion of the tournament earn an impressive financial reward.

2001 pga tour money list

As the rise of LIV Golf and the mega-million-dollar purse has caused the PGA Tour to counter with its own $20 million signature events, prize money records are falling all over the place. The question is whether the majors can keep up, given that their purses turn out to be lower than other "regular" tour events on the two rival circuits.

Truth be told, it’s actually a matter of “catching” up, which is exactly what the Masters has been doing for the past few years. In 2020 and 2021, the Masters payout was $11.5 million, with the winner earning $2.07 million. It jumped to $15 million and $2.7 million for Scottie Scheffler in 2022, then $18 million in 2023 , with Jon Rahm claiming $3.24 million for his win. Potentially, the tournament will increase the purse again this year, but nothing official will likely be announced until a cut is made during tournament week.

Currently, the Masters trails the U.S. Open ($20 million overall purse) but pays out a bit more than the PGA Championship ($17.5 million) in terms of men’s majors with the largest purses. (The Open Championship paid $16.5 million in 2023, up $2.5 million from 2022.) All the majors are currently dwarfed by the Players Championship, which paid out $25 million in March with winner Scottie Scheffler earning $4.5 million.

Tiger Woods claimed Masters win No. 5 in 2019.

Andrew Redington

With Tiger Woods expected to play again this week, and with his celebrated Masters career, it is interesting to track how much the five-time green jacket winner has made during his career at Augusta. Here’s a breakdown of his Masters prize money payout each year he's competed as a professional:

1997: Win, $486,000 1998: T-8, $89,600 1999: T-18, $52,160 2000: 5, $184,000 2001: Win, $1,008,000 2002: Win, $1,008,000 2003: T-15, $93,000 2004: T-22, $70,200 2005: Win, $1,260,000 2006: T-3, $315,700 2007: T-2, $541,333 2008: 2, $810,000 2009: T-6, $242,813 2010: T-4, $330,000 2011: T-4, $330,667 2012: T-40, $32,000 2013: T-4, $352,000 2015: T-17, $155,000 2018: T-32, $63,663 2019: Win, $2,070,000 2020: T-38, $50,600 2022: 47th, $43,500

(A note about last year: As you might recall, Tiger made the cut but withdrew ahead of the start of the third round, earning $10,000 that's unofficial in terms of PGA Tour prize money but is still counted by the Masters in its overall totals, lifting him to $9.598 million for his career.)

The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises

There’s a lot of money to be made in professional golf.

Tiger Woods maintains his overall lead atop the PGA Tour’s all-time money list. He is the first golfer to surpass the $120,000,000 mark in on-course career earnings and the only one over the $100 million mark. Phil Mickelson, before departing for the LIV Golf League, surpassed the $90 million mark. Rory McIlroy is third on this list as he has gone past $80 million.

With the bigger pots at stake in the PGA Tour’s signature events, expect a lot of movement up in the next few years on this list.

With that in mind, let’s look at the top money earners of all-time, as measured by on-course winnings. Some of the names may surprise you.

Four NFL Draft storylines to watch + final QB deep dive with Derrik Klassen | The Exempt List

Charles McDonald is joined by Derrik Klassen of Bleacher Report and Reception Perception to give their final thoughts ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft on storylines to watch and this fascinating quarterback class. The duo start off with the news that Zach Wilson has been traded to the Denver Broncos. Both agree this doesn't mean a lot for anyone except Ben DiNucci, but Charles asks if the New York Jets should consider drafting Aaron Rodgers' replacement at tenth overall (or later in the draft). There are 4-5 first round picks at quarterback this year, and Derrik has charted all of them. Charles and Derrik do a final deep dive on each of the top QBs, breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr. and J.J. McCarthy. Later, Charles presents his four storylines to watch this Thursday as the 2024 NFL Draft kicks off. Charles thinks the ideal landing spot for Drake Maye is the Minnesota Vikings, and that Denver trading up is irresponsible. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars are an ideal candidate to make a move and trade up for a wide receiver or cornerback. Finally Charles presents his take that this defensive tackle class is underrated, which sparks a conversation around how college linebackers are letting the NFL down.

Tiger Woods circa 2000

Tiger Woods’ 2000 Season Earnings in Today’s Dollars Will Blow Your Mind

Whether you believe Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time or not (Jack Nicklaus is the only other acceptable answer, by the way), there’s no denying that the influence he’s had on the game is unparalleled.

While we won’t delve into every way he changed the sport here today, we will focus on one specific aspect: money.

Since Tiger joined the PGA Tour in 1996, purses have grown exponentially as his popularity brought new sponsors, bigger TV contracts, and boatloads of extra cash into the golf world. And just how much more moolah is up for grabs these days?

When Woods famously won his first Masters in 1997, he pocketed $486,000. And what was the amount written on Scottie Scheffler’s check after slipping on the green jacket in 2022? That would be $2.7 million, a ridiculous 455.56% increase.

The “Tiger Effect” is real, folks.

So with this difference in mind, we thought we’d have a little fun today and see just how much money Tiger Woods would have made during his best season using today’s dollars. Naturally, we’ve chosen his 2000 campaign for this exercise.

Tiger Woods won 10 times in 2000, including three major championships

Once again, whether you believe Tiger Woods is the GOAT or not, there’s no denying that his 2000 season was the most spectacular display of dominance in the history of golf.

Woods made 22 official starts in 2000 and won 10 of them, including the final three major championships of the year. After finishing fifth at The Masters, Tiger put on arguably the greatest performance in the sport’s history at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach , winning by 15 strokes.

A month later, he won The Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews by eight strokes and became the youngest to complete the career Grand Slam. And a month after that, he won his second straight PGA Championship in a memorable duel with Bob May .

As for his non-major victories, Tiger took titles at the Mercedes Championships (now the Sentry Tournament of Champions), the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the Bay Hill Invitational (now the Arnold Palmer Invitational), the Memorial, the WGC-NEC Invitational, and the Canadian Open. And in his final official outing of the year, he won the Johnnie Walker Classic, one of two appearances he made on the European Tour.

Woods never missed a cut and only finished outside the top five three times, his lowest finish coming at the Western Open, where he tied for 23rd. Ridiculous, right?

How much Tiger Woods would have made in 2022 playing his 2000 schedule

Tiger Woods circa 2000

So we now come to the truly fun part.

In his 22 official starts in 2000, Tiger Woods raked in $9,578,889, the most any golfer had ever earned in a single season up to that point.

Now, calculating what he would earn today playing that same schedule proved to be a bit tricky, the main reason being that several of the tournaments in which he participated that year no longer exist. So when that problem arose, I simply used a purse from a similar event.

For instance, take the now-defunct Buick Open, which was played in the state of Michigan from 1958 to 2009 and typically took place two to three weeks after The Open Championship . Sounds a lot like the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which was played in Detroit two weeks after this year’s British. Close enough, don’t you think?

Then there’s the matter of the Tour Championship, which currently uses the staggered-stroke system that gives the top seed, which Tiger undoubtedly would have been, a two-shot lead before play ever begins. In 2000, Woods lost at East Lake by two to Phil Mickelson , who likely would have been the No. 2 seed, which means we could have gotten a playoff between the longtime rivals.

But since we don’t know how any of that would’ve played out, to keep it fair and accurate, we kept Tiger in second, which would have given him a $6.5 million payout in 2022. Given their overall history, I think it’s fair to say Woods would have beaten Mickelson in that playoff and taken the $18 million top prize. Again, though, we wanted to keep things as accurate as possible, so we kept the 2000 result.

So even without that extra $11.5 million he likely would have won, just take a look at what Tiger would have earned in 2022.

But wait, there’s more.

As the PGA Tour Playoffs didn’t exist in 2000, neither did the Comcast Business Tour Top 10, the $20 million pool divided between the top 10 players in the FedEx Cup standings at the end of the regular season. As Woods would have easily been in the top spot, we have to tack on an extra $4 million.

And let’s not forget about the Player Impact Program (PIP), which also didn’t exist back then. As Tiger won the PIP in both 2021 and 2022, we’re pretty sure he would’ve won it in 2000 as well. So there’s another $15 million.

So without taking a single endorsement into account — or that additional $11.5 million — Tiger Woods would have earned $53,374,892 from his 2000 season in 2022 dollars. Have I used the word ridiculous yet?

Five things to know: ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP

The DP World Tour visits a new course this week in Japan as the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP marks the penultimate regular event of the Asian Swing.

No10

All to play for as Asian Swing continues

The  ISPS HANDA – CHAMPIONSHIP  returns for its second edition in Japan this week, marking the penultimate event in the Asian Swing.

As with the four other Global Swings, the Asian Swing will have its own champion who will earn $200,000 from an overall $1million bonus pool.

Swing champions will also qualify for each of the  Back 9  events, where players will play for increased Race to Dubai ranking points.

The leading DP World Tour member (not otherwise exempt) will also qualify for the  Genesis Scottish Open , the second of five Rolex Series events this season.

But in an another exciting reward for DP World Tour members, those who finish in positions one to three in the final Asian Swing standings (at the conclusion of the Volvo China Open) will be exempt into the  U.S. PGA Championship  at Valhalla Golf Club from May 16-19.

As it stands, Keita Nakajima, Jesper Svensson and Kiradech Aphibarnrat sit in the top three positions on the rankings, but with a tight leaderboard, anyone down to T-58 can go top with a win in Japan.

Mount Fiji provides backdrop to new venue on the DP World Tour

With views of Mount Fuji offering a spectacular backdrop to this year's tournament, Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course will play host on the DP World Tour for the first time this week, following on from last year's event at PGM Ishioka GC.

The par 70 layout, which plays at 7262 yards and is described by the club as a 'true hillside course', was designed in 1977 by Shunsuke Kato and is the flagship layout of Taineiyo Club's 18 courses. Situated 100km southwest of Tokyo, the course underwent a renovation in 2018 overseen by Rees Jones with consultation from Major Champion Hideki Matsuyama.

No stranger to elite competitions, the course has staged the Taiheiyo Masters on the Japan Golf Tour every year since its opening in 1977. It has also played host to the 2001 World Cup of Golf, won by South African duo Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, and will also stage this year's Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in October.

Japanese stars in action

A host of players will be hoping to become the latest Japanese stars to make their mark after a record-breaking six months that has seen three champions crowned on the DP World Tour.

Keita Nakajima became the latest name to break through at the Hero Indian Open at the end of March, just 49 days after compatriot Rikuya Hoshino earned his own maiden title at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. Last season, Ryo Hisatsune became just the third player in history - following Hideki Matsuyama (2021 Masters) and Isao Aoki (1983 Panasonic European Open) to lift a DP World Tour title at the 2023 Cazoo Open de France.

With the event co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour, Nakajima is joined in the field this week by 45 other players hoping to impress the home fans at a venue that is very well-known to them. Those include the likes of Takumi Kanaya, Kazuki Higa, Masahiro Kawamura, Ryo Ishikawa (a three-time champion on this course) and Hideto Tanihara (a two-time winner on this course)- who all have several previous top ten finishes in DP World Tour events.

ISPS HANDA continues support of golf

ISPS HANDA was founded by the Japanese philanthropist, Dr Haruhisa Handa, in 2006 in the belief that sport has the power to inspire, transform, and unite people and communities across social, racial and socio-economic barriers.

The DP World Tour and ISPS HANDA have collaborated on several events during a long-standing relationship, in turn raising the profile of golf as an accessible sport for all.

This was seen recently with ISPS HANDA backing the Australian All Abilities Championship – an event that features on the European Tour group’s G4D Tour schedule – at the end of last year.

Previous events ISPS HANDA has supported on the DP World Tour include the ISPS HANDA Wales Open (2012-14 and 2020), ISPS HANDA Perth International (2012-14 and 2016), ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf (2013, 2016, 2018), (ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth (2017-19), ISPA HANDA Vic Open (2019-20), ISPS HANDA UK Championship (2020), ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf Management (2021), ISPS HANDA Championship in Spain (2022) and ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by AVIV Clinics (2019, 21-23).

Inside the field

Matthieu Pavon is the top-ranked player in the field this week, having reached a career-high in the Official World Golf Ranking with a tie for 12th on his Masters debut earlier this month.

The French star, who won his first PGA TOUR title earlier this year, is joined in action by fellow ISPS HANDA ambassadors Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who are also fellow winners on the DP World Tour.

Jesper Svensson, who like Nakajima has won his first DP World Tour title during the Asian Swing, is aiming to strengthen his bid for a first Major start at next month’s U.S. PGA Championship, while Matteo Manassero and Jordan Gumberg are this season’s other winners teeing it up.

New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori, who has guaranteed DP World Tour status for next season by finishing top of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit, is another rising star to watch out for.

Former DP World Tour winners Renato Paratore and Tom Lewis are among the Qualifying School graduates looking to make an impression, while could we see a third Challenge Tour graduate from the class of 2023 win this season after Matteo Manassero and Jesper Svensson?
