Costa Rica is home to 30 national parks and about five percent of the world's biodiversity. There are cloud forests, coral reefs, dry forests, and rain forests to explore. One of the best things to do in Costa Rica is to take a hike, especially in Tenorio Volcano National Park , where you can see the stunning Rio Celeste waterfall.

It boasts active and dormant volcanoes.

Costa Rica has more than 60 volcanoes — including five that are active. Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most popular attractions, especially for people who want to hike its rugged terrain or soak in the soothing geothermal hot springs . There are lots of spas and resorts in the area that take advantage of the naturally warm waters.

It's a wildlife paradise.

About 30 percent of Costa Rica is protected through national parks, reserves, and refuges, so there are many places for animal populations to thrive. And pretty much anywhere you go, there's wildlife to discover. Food usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of Costa Rica. Costa Rica makes significant efforts to protect its national parklands, and the same goes for its beaches. It has a potent national beverage.

When you're not drinking coffee, you should opt for Costa Rica's other drink of choice: guaro . The clear, sweet liqueur is made from sugar cane juice and has a very high alcohol content. It's a convenient vacation destination.

Costa Rica is about a three-hour flight from Miami, a six-hour flight from Los Angeles, and a five-hour flight from New York City. If you're traveling from the United States, you likely won't have to worry about dealing with severe jet lag, as the country operates on Mountain Standard Time from mid-March to October and Central Standard Time from November to mid-March. Although the country's currency is the Costa Rican colón, U.S. dollars and credit cards are widely accepted.

It's one of the world's happiest countries.

One of the best-known Costa Rican mottos is " pura vida ," which means "pure life." And Costa Ricans take this to heart. This is probably why the country is considered one of the happiest in the world according to the Happy Planet Index . Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica or NOT

Should I visit Costa Rica? This is a popular question as the coronavirus situation begins to plateau, and there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Our lives will be resuming soon, and many of us are going to be ready to escape and enjoy life again on vacation. Costa Rica is already on many people's radar as it truly is a fantastic place to visit, with incredible diversity, beaches, rainforest, wildlife, and something for everybody - well, almost everybody! This page is specifically designed to answer that question, is Costa Rica right for me? We work with many people from a variety of backgrounds and have compiled a list of the Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica or NOT. We have also added some commonly asked questions about the coronavirus situation below so that you can make an up-to-date, informed decision .

Free Vacation Planning

1)  it’s the rainforest, expect rain.

Reason to visit: The rains keep the jungles lush, green and teaming with life.  The savvy traveler will plan their itinerary around traditional weather patterns, which can vary significantly across the country.  I personally love the beginning and end of rain seasons as everything is so lush and beautiful.  The wildlife is generally more active, the scenery is gorgeous and the prices are lower.

Reason not to visit: If a little rain has the ability to ruin your day, you should not even consider Costa Rica as a destination.  Chances are likely that no matter how carefully you plan, you will encounter at least a little rain. 

2)  Beautiful Beaches – because they are protected

Reason to visit:   Well over 99 percent of the coastal land of Costa Rica is protected by maritime zones.  These zones prohibit construction within 200 meters of the high tide mark.   One can often walk along jungle lined beaches and spot wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, parrots and toucans in the trees that back them!  This holds particularly true on the Central and South Pacific as well as the Caribbean side.

Reason not to visit:   There are few beach front hotels due to the maritime restrictions.  If you love boardwalks and high rise hotels looming over the beach, you probably will not like most beach destinations in Costa Rica.

3)  Pura Vida – Don’t worry, be happy

Reason to visit:   Pura vida – what a fun phrase and way of life.  While it literally translates to “pure life”, the more practical definition would be don’t worry, it will be alright.  Pura vida is a way of life down here.  Things run a lot slower and far less stressful than in many other countries.  You may have to wait 20 minutes at an ATM to withdraw money – pura vida is the answer.  Put a smile on and try to strike up a conversation with a local. They will appreciate your efforts and if nothing else, you’ll both have something to laugh about.

Reason not to visit:   Pura vida – your transfer is 5 minutes late.  “What could possibly be taking them so long?!?!  Don’t they know I am on vacation?!?!”  If this is something you might say you may want to consider another destination.  Things do run differently here for better or for worse.  One thing is certain; you are not going to change it.

4)  Prices – It looks like a great deal!

Reason to visit:   You have done your homework and looked at the fine print.  You know that most “unbelievable deals” are riddled with hidden fees.  You have done a little research, sifted through the offers and have realistic expectations on the one you chose.  You are ready for Costa Rica and most likely have reserved a vacation package with a reputable travel service so you know what your bottom line is ahead of time and have the confidence that you will not go over budget this time.

Reason not to visit:   You believe that the most important factor in planning your vacation is price.  If you fall into this category, chances are very likely you will be sorely disappointed with Costa Rica.  There are thousands of “unbelievable deals” that really are unbelievable as you almost always end up paying exorbitant hidden fees or you end up with hotels and tours that can only sell at bargain basement prices.  Often the worst offenders of these deals are the flight, hotel and rental car packages, which nearly always end up costing 2-3 times the advertised price when all is said and done.  Unfortunately, those that fall for these type of “deals” never see the bottom line until it is too late.  ALWAYS read the fine print and ask about the things that are not included such as taxes, rental car insurance, breakfast or meals at the hotels, etc..

5)  Hotels – the good, the bad and the ugly

Reason to visit:   Your idea of a vacation is to see and experience something different.  You understand that what is stocked in every Holiday Inn in the United States may be a rare commodity in a country like Costa Rica.  You have done your homework, checked locations and amenities and know the hotels you will be visiting are the right choice for you.

Reason not to visit:   You might say something along the lines of “the hotel costs $250 a night, so it should have American style 5 star amenities”.  If you judge your hotels on price rather than research, you are rolling the dice in Costa Rica.  Many hotels are higher priced and with far less amenities than one would assume.  Reasons for this can vary from: location, views or grounds, eco-luxury (an example of eco-luxury would be a beautiful treehouse hotel, constructed of precious woods, but without television) or are simply over-priced (yes, there are MANY in this category).

6)  The Roads – Buckle up, it’s going to be an adventure

Reason to visit: You know that Costa Rica is a small mountainous country with a population of under 5 million people to support a national road system.  Due to this, you understand that the roads are in generally poor condition (at least compared to the United States), but that only adds to the adventure.  You have done your research and know how long it will take to drive between destinations.  You are looking forward to taking in the beautiful scenery. 

Reason not to visit: Driving more than a couple hours would ruin your vacation.  Your idea of the perfect vacation is to arrive at the airport, drive 30 minutes to an all-inclusive resort and then do day trips to the attractions.  This is a huge red flag as none of the all-inclusive resorts are located less than 3 hours (in each direction of the rainforest, Arenal  Volcano, hot springs, the cloud forest, better adventures, etc.).  By doing this, you will actually spend much more time driving than if you just visited the destination. 

Another scenario: If your idea of a perfect vacation is to drive 30 minutes to an all-inclusive resort and just sit around the pool or lounge by the beach for a week, you may want to reconsider your destination.  There are nicer all-inclusive resorts at lower prices in destinations like Cancun or Jamaica (though you probably will not want to leave the hotel grounds for security reasons at these destinations). 

7)  Late Nights (or not so late)

Reason to visit:   You do not mind the fact that Costa Rica generally runs on an earlier schedule than most are accustomed to.  Most tours start in the morning and you don’t want to miss a thing.

Reason not to visit: If you are into nightlife such as clubbing or late nights in general, Costa Rica may not be the best destination for you.  Most bars at resorts close by 10pm and most public bars close by midnight unless you are staying in places such as Tamarindo, San Jose, Puerto Viejo or Jaco.  

8)  Critters – cooooool or ewwwwww…

Reason to visit:   The idea of finding colorful dart frogs, strange insects, a variety of snakes, or even encountering lizards that can run across water is absolutely intriguing. 

Reason not to visit:   If this is something you might say; “EEEEK! There are lizards on the wall!  I cannot possibly stay here!”  You should not even consider Costa Rica as a destination for your vacation.  Those lizards are geckos.  They eat mosquitoes and they're your best friend in the tropics.  Even the most modern steel and glass skyscrapers in downtown San Jose end up with bugs inside and there are no hotels or resorts in Costa Rica that can completely seal out the environment.

9)  Safety – But I heard…

Reason to visit:   You have done your homework and know that despite a few random incidents, it is true that Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in the world to visit.  You have read articles such as the USA Today spotlight on safe travel for women travelers .  While it is safe, you are aware that there are problems with petty theft and are planning on taking basic precautions such as using the hotel safe, not leaving items of value unattended on the beach and not walking around San Jose.

Reason not to visit:   If you plan to go to areas such as Jaco or San Jose and intend to party all night, you are significantly increasing your odds of becoming a target for crime.  If you plan to aimlessly walk around with a $10,000 camera strapped around your neck in any neighborhood, you will also increase your odds of becoming a victim of crime.  If you think that just because you spent $500 a night on your hotel room that you can leave anything of value laying around your room, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment.  The reality is Costa Rica IS a safe place to visit, but you have to use common sense.

10)  Location – It takes how many hours to get there!?!?

Reason to visit:   It only takes 2.5 hours to get here from Miami or a little over 5 hours from New York (non-stop of course).  That’s nothing; it takes much longer to go to Hawaii.  This will actually not be the case for most of you, who will likely end up with a short layover somewhere along the line.  The average traveler ends up spending around 7 – 8 hours in the complete duration.  Any seasoned traveler will tell you this is a small amount of time in comparison with most other destinations.

Reason not to visit:   I don’t have enough money to fly direct and am not willing to spend an hour or two in layover.  If that is the case, I would recommend doing a little research into other destinations.  Chances are likely you will find better rates and shorter flights to Costa Rica.  If not, you can always save for next year ;-).

So there you have it.  There are two sides to every story.  I suspect that for many of you, this article will confirm that Costa Rica is perfect for you.  Others will find that Costa Rica probably is not the best destination for them.  If so, we are happy that we were able to shed some light on subjects that are normally only talked about from one point of view.

5 reasons to visit Costa Rica when we can travel again

It may be small but Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. With a staggering 29 national parks, the Central American nation’s rugged topography, dense rainforests and steaming volcanoes give way to mangrove swamps and miles of secluded tropical beach. These lush, undisturbed landscapes thrum with exotic wildlife, such as howler monkeys and quetzal birds, and are heavily protected. In fact, Costa Rica is lauded for its ecological efforts, receiving the UN’s highest environmental honour, the Champions of the Earth award, in 2019 for ambitious climate-change policies and its role in protecting nature, with plans to become carbon-neutral by 2050. Eco-conscious travellers can rest assured that many of the country’s hotels, adventure activities, reserves and wellness retreats operate to similar high sustainable standards. From its welcoming culture to the misty cloud forests of Monteverde, here are five reasons to visit Costa Rica when we can travel again.

The ecotourism movement

Volunteering schemes, carbon offsetting and ethical campaigns are woven into Costa Rica’s travel industry by virtue of its long-established ecotourism movement. At the heart of this is the country’s Pura Vida pledge – a commitment to educating both tourists and the travel trade about responsible tourism with five key steps: Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST), carbon offsetting, volunteering, respecting the environment and quality assurance. As the custodian of heaving rainforests, sublime beaches and 6.5 per cent of the world’s biodiversity, Costa Rica has compelling reasons to protect the environment. By acknowledging these five principles, visitors can be confident they’re making responsible choices while enjoying this dramatically wild landscape, 28 per cent of which remains stringently protected. The tourism board’s CST programme – an accreditation for hotels, tour operators and restaurants adhering to these sustainable practices – is a key element of the Pura Vida pledge and is a useful guide for eco-conscious travellers. Up in the highlands above the Costa Rican capital San José, artist-owned resort Finca Rosa Blanca is a stellar example of such eco-endeavour. The sustainably forested coffee plantation is locavore in style, using the organic bounty of its farm, greenhouse and orchards to create delicious seasonal dishes, as well as a tasting menu paired with its own fresh Arabica brews. Finca Rosa Blanca is well located for exploring several of Costa Rica’s natural wonders, notably the nearby steaming volcanoes, standing on the continental divide at Barva Volcano or marvelling at the moonscape surrounding the active Irazú volcano, as well as bird-watching, ziplining through the forest canopy and going on high-altitude coffee hikes which include cupping lessons.

A feeling of space

Costa Rica’s vastly disparate landscape, carved down its green middle by a mountainous spine and sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, lends itself to long, windy journeys which can be as joyful as the destination itself. Take remote, upmarket eco-hotel Pacuare Lodge, which is 70 miles east of San José on the banks of Costa Rica’s pretty Pacuare River and enveloped in the Bajo del Tigre forest. The lodge’s jaguar conservation efforts are impressive, as are its eco-inspired adventures which make the effort to reach it worthwhile. Most guests eschew the long drive from the capital and its jolt-worthy dirt tracks for a dramatic white-water-rafting entrance and departure. Once off the raft, you step into a smart lodge whose wild isolation feels otherworldly. A lack of crowds is not unusual in Costa Rica and adds to the allure of its parks, wildlife reserves and colourful towns. The cleanliness of the magnificent Savegre River, which begins at Cerro de La Muerte and flows into the Pacific, is owed to the small number of inhabitants, including tapirs and crocodiles, along its banks. Santa Rosa National Park in Costa Rica’s north-west, home to one of the world’s last remaining tropical dry forests as well as untamed Pacific beaches such as Danta and Santa Elena, retains this sense of undiscovered charm where visitors have large swathes of forest and coastline to themselves. Wildlife enthusiasts should also visit the turtle-nesting beaches – Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast and Las Baulas National Marine Park on the Pacific – keeping eyes peeled when venturing into the vibrant rainforests for protected wildlife such as spider monkeys and white-tailed deer.

The healing powers of nature

Costa Rica’s lush jungles and isolated stretches of coast are a big draw for those keen to shrug off the stresses of modern life and reconnect with nature. There are numerous wellness activities and retreats, most with admirable ecological and conservation credentials, such as Le Cameleon boutique hotel in Limon, not far from the town of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Hidden away in the jungle’s thick foliage that meets the beach, this contemporary-styled eco-hotel is not only aesthetically sensitive to its surroundings with open air communal spaces and a pool wrapped in tropical plants, but is crucially mindful of its environmental impact, with recycled waste, careful water management and the exclusive use of solar power. Such efforts mean that a rich rainforest soundtrack and the movement of the waves set the rhythm of the place. Le Cameleon harnesses its bountiful location, using raw, organic foods cooked no higher than 52 degrees to salvage health-improving enzymes, and the beach’s pretty sunrises and serene tempo for yoga classes and massages, as well as the bay for surfing, snorkelling and kayaking. Another of Costa Rica’s protected gems is the Orosi Valley, the setting for Tapanti National Park – simply venturing through it is enough to lower stress levels. Some 35km from San José in the Province of Cartago, the peaceful green valley is carved by rivers and thermal waters and few superlatives do it justice. Further north-west of the capital lies Bajos del Toro – a cloud forest at an altitude of 1,442 metres that's home to Costa Rica’s largest waterfall, Catarata del Toro which tumbles into a volcanic crater. Stay at nearby eco-lodge and spa El Silencio and find peace doing outdoor yoga or going on guided nature walks into the surrounding tropical forests, usually accompanied by the thrum of hummingbirds.

Off-grid adventure

The establishment of both the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in 1972 and the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve in 1989 (one of the first reserves controlled by its local community) was pivotal in catalysing Costa Rica’s sustainability movement. Both form part of the country’s famous Monteverde Cloud Forest in the north-west province of Sierra de Tilarán. This dense, emerald mass heaves with exotic wildlife, insects and plant species, and draws intrepid spirits with high-altitude hikes along hanging bridges, zip-lining and nature spotting (look out for squawking macaws and docile sloths). Adrenalin junkies head to La Fortuna in Alajuela to see the majestic – and active – Arenal volcano. After a long day hiking the surrounding forests and lava fields, visitors can soak in one of the many geothermal hot-spring pools at the volcano’s base. Surfers and waterbabies should make for the beaches along the Gulf of Papagayo, just south of Santa Rosa National Park, where the mangroves are doused in brilliant sunlight. Stay at El Mangroove, a stylishly pared-back hotel right by the water, with boat trips, kayaking and snorkelling in the bay. Manuel Antonio’s beaches are well-known for their beauty, as is Arenas del Mar, an elevated eco-friendly and community-focused stay on the beachfront with the surf at Espadilla nearby. A lesser-known pocket of coast can be found in Marino Ballena National Park where a two-mile stretch of white sand, Playa Uvita, mimics the shape of a whale’s tail. Fittingly, this is one of the best spots for whale-watching during mating season – from mid July to mid November and mid December to mid April.

The warm culture

Costa Rica's vibrant culture is a welcome post-lockdown balm. The sustainably wired nation’s Pura Vida pledge derives from the greeting used as an expression of happiness, which translates as ‘pure life’ or ‘full of life’, much like Costa Rica’s rainforests and coastline. You’ll find this positive energy in the family-owned cafés, artisanal shops and in places such as the Bribri reserve, located in the formidable Talamanca Mountain range along the banks of the Yorkin River. There Are So Many Reasons To Visit Costa Rica

From impressive landscapes and incredible adventure activities, to the vast array of wildlife, there are so many reasons to visit Costa Rica. 

There’s nowhere quite like Costa Rica. It’s wild, raw and rugged. It’s adventurous. It’s beautiful. Plus, the people are kind natured and relaxed. I’ve always found Costa Ricans to be warm and helpful. With nature all around and a peaceful nation to explore, Costa Rica is the perfect place for an exciting adventure.

I was really excited to be asked by Wanderlust Magazine to be part of the Costa Rica Sanctuary – am online hub dedicated to the country. It also gave me an excuse to look back at my old photos, blogs and videos! I’ve visited the country twice now – once as a backpacker, then again on a trip with the tourist board. Between those two trips I’ve experienced a lot.

I’ve flown along the country’s longest zip line, tried white water rafting for the first time, been woken up by howler monkeys in the rainforest, explored Caribbean beaches and epic volcanoes, and truly got to grips with the country’s favourite phrase ‘pura vida’!

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. There are more species of plants, insects, birds, sea creatures and animals than most other countries put together. For a small country, that’s quite some accolade!

Spot sloths hanging lazily from tree branches, watch whales in the Pacific, wake up to the sounds of monkeys and macaws, and watch as lurid green frogs hop along the rainforest floor.

2. Adventures

With such epic scenery, this is a country made for adventure. I loved zip lining through the trees in Monteverde and exploring the misty cloud forests. On my last trip I gave white water rafting a go, racing down the Orosi River – another unforgettable experience! 

Friends of mine have learned to surf on the chilled beaches of the Pacific, while others have SCUBA dived in the Caribbean, seeing so many incredible sea creatures including sea turtles, sharks and dolphins.

3. Landscapes

Costa Rica is home to untouched beaches, huge volcanoes, and vast areas of rainforest and protected countryside. I’ve taken thousands of photos on my visits. The landscapes had me reaching for my camera over and over again!

I still remember entering into Arenal Volcano National Park and seeing the huge looming top of Arenal Volcano. It was just breath-taking.

As well as the beauty of areas like Corcovado National Park, I’ve loved visiting the country’s waterfalls. La Fortuna waterfall is a popular stop on most itineraries, as there is so much to do in that region of Costa Rica. However, a little closer to the capital San Jose is Cataratas Del Toro – the country’s largest waterfall… and what a beauty it is!

4. Pura Vida

While Costa Ricans use the phrase ‘pura vida’ as a catch all for hello, goodbye, how are you and life’s good… there’s more to it. Pura vida is a way of life. Looking for reasons to visit Costa Rica? Here are seven things that will make you add Costa Rica to your travel bucket list and want to plan a trip ASAP!

Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations in Central America, and it’s not hard to see why.

This country has so much to offer! I visited Costa Rica as part of a two week tour with  G Adventures and I had a great time exploring the highlights of this diverse country.

Costa Rica is definitely best for travelers who love nature and outdoor adventures, although if your idea of a vacation involves sitting on the beach at an all-inclusive resort, you can do that too!

While I do love other Central American countries like Guatemala a little more, I can’t deny that Costa Rica is an incredible destination, and one that’s easy to travel to with great tourism infrastructure.

Here are the top reasons to visit Costa Rica!

1. The beaches

Costa Rica is home to many stunning beaches on two coasts: Pacific and Caribbean.

The Caribbean coast is more laidback and less developed but growing rapidly, while the Pacific coast is more developed and home to the majority of Costa Rica’s tourism.

You’ll find pristine beaches and beautiful national parks and nature preserves on both coasts. You can also do all sorts of activities, and Costa Rica is especially known for its great surfing!

2. The natural beauty

There’s no shortage of natural beauty in Costa Rica. You’ll find diverse landscapes, from the aforementioned beaches, to jungles, volcanoes, and mountains. 

Although Costa Rica has one of the most developed economies in Central America and has robust infrastructure, I was shocked by how rugged and wild much of the country felt. Costa Rica is also a very eco-conscious country and they work hard to preserve and protect their natural beauty.

3. The wildlife

Costa Rica is the most biodiverse country in the world. You’ll find an incredible amount of wildlife packed into this relatively small country. I was blown away by the wildlife I saw.

It’s possible to have ethical encounters with many animals in the wild, including sloths, monkeys, frogs, toucans, iguanas, and more. And if you’re brave you can get up close with crocodiles, caimans, and tarantulas! It’s a daily occurrence to spot amazing animals while in Costa Rica.

4. The food

For me, Costa Rica definitely had the best food out of any Central American country.

Yes, a lot of it is the typical Central American fare (rice, beans, plantains, etc.) but it was always prepared in a way that was really tasty! I never got tired of it in the two weeks I was there. And it was definitely the healthiest food, with tons of fresh vegetables. I also found it’s really common for Costa Ricans to have fresh fruit juice with every meal, and they never drink soda.

Aside from the traditional food, you’ll also find lots of cute, healthy cafes and restaurants in the more touristy areas. (Although these are definitely more expensive than eating traditional food!)

5. The waterfalls

Yes, this could probably fall under “natural beauty” but I wanted to give it its own item anyway!

Costa Rica is full of with stunning waterfalls, like the popular La Fortuna Waterfall pictured above. I loved this waterfall because it’s one you can swim in, and the water was an amazing color! Another extremely popular (but off the beaten path) waterfall is the bright blue Rio Celeste.

You’ll find waterfalls in so many places in Costa Rica, and they were all super impressive.

6. The people

Costa Rican people are very friendly, sociable, and helpful. And although many of them speak English, it’s always appreciated if you know some Spanish and use it with them!

With tourism playing such a big role in Costa Rica and being an esteemed career path, you’ll find that many people who work in hospitality and the service industry are very professional and proud of what they do. It’s hard to have a bad experience with anyone in Costa Rica.

They’re also very laidback and truly embrace the “pura vida” way of life.

7. The outdoor activities

If you love activities that get your adrenaline pumping, you’ll never be bored in Costa Rica. There’s no shortage of things to do. Some of the more adventurous activities I tried included waterfall rappelling, ziplining through the jungle, swimming in waterfalls, and learning how to surf.

Even if you’re not a thrill-seeker, there are many outdoor activities like hanging bridges, nature walks, and bird-watching that will keep you entertained and allow you to appreciate Costa Rica’s beauty.

Costa Rica is home to everything from steamy rainforests and misty cloud forests, to still-smoking volcanoes and sublime beaches strung along Pacific and Caribbean coastlines.

The country’s motto is pura vida – or pure life – and a quarter of its landmass is protected by national parks and reserves , offering a wealth of wildlife watching among untamed nature.

And there’s enough adrenaline-fuelled action to satisfy the most demanding thrill-seeker, from white water rafting to zip lining and serious surf breaks. Below, we look at the places you won’t want to miss.

1. La Fortuna

Best place for outdoor adventures  

Volcán Arenal’s picture-perfect cone looms over the town of La Fortuna . Up until 2010, it thrilled visitors with plumes of smoke and lava pyrotechnics, but today climbing to the summit is illegal.

You can still get up close to its lava-covered lower slopes by taking the Las Coladas trail, one of several unforgettable hikes around Volcán Arenal National Park, about 7km (10.5 miles) west of La Fortuna.

Hike down to La Fortuna’s impressive waterfall , which plunges out of thick vegetation into an emerald-green pool, or get muddy on a spelunking tour through the limestone labyrinth of the Venado Caves . 

Near Volcán Arenal National Park, around 7km (10.5 miles) west of La Fortuna, there’s horseback riding, mountain biking, rappelling and ziplining on offer too, along with kayaking and windsurfing on Lake Arenal. The region’s natural hot springs make the perfect place to ease weary muscles.

2. Osa Peninsula  

Best place for getting off-the-beaten path

The wild and remote Osa Peninsula is all rainforests, rivers and mangroves, ringed by pristine beaches. 

Wake to a chorus of chirrups, whoops, caws and the sonorous roar of howler monkeys. Watch spider monkeys put on an impressive display of treetop gymnastics while scarlet macaws squawk and preen.

It’s just a typical morning in the Parque Nacional Corcovado , one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

The gin-clear waters of Bahía Drake are home to humpback whales and dolphins, and it’s the jumping-off point for diving and snorkeling tours to the marine playground of Isla del Caño.

Planning tip: The whale season generally runs between the months of December and April and July and October.

3. Monteverde

Best place for birds, butterflies and cloud forest canopy tours

Away from Costa Rica’s sun-soaked beaches and steamy rainforests, Monteverde’s mist-wreathed cloud forest reserves sit high on the country’s mountainous spine. It’s one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots, with a staggering array of flora and fauna. 

At Curi-Cancha – a cattle ranch turned private reserve – trails wind through primary, secondary and open forests buzzing with jewel-colored hummingbirds and rowdy toucans. 

Look out for the aptly named resplendent quetzal with its brilliant green and crimson plumage and sweeping tail feathers – they’re easier to spot during the mating season from March to June. 

For a bird’s eye view of the forest, take an adrenaline-fueled ride on a zipline, skimming the canopy at high speed – Sky Trek Monteverde has an automatic braking system, useful for kids and anxious adults.

Planning tip: Take a guided night walk to discover a different side to the forest, when nocturnal critters such as sloths, snakes and kinkajous get active to a soundtrack of the frog chorus.

4. The Nicoya Peninsula  

Best place for sand and surf

Famed for its postcard-perfect beaches and sweet Pacific swells, Nicoya has something for wave riders of all levels.

There’s wildlife too: just north of the party town of Tamarindo , Grande Beach – part of Las Baulas National Marine Park – is a nesting site for leatherback turtles from October to March.

Among the peninsula’s finest strips of sand are the blissfully secluded Playa Barrigona and Sámara , popular with both Ticos and visitors thanks to its calm, safe waters that are ideal for novice surfers. 

Further south, the remote, jungle-backed town of Santa Teresa – long a haunt of surfers-in-the-know – is now a hip hangout with cool cafes, sushi restaurants and designer boutiques.

Like an advert for living the pura vida , Nicoya has been named one of the world’s five Blue Zones , where residents have longer-than-average lifespans thanks to their healthy habits.

Planning tip: Nicoya’s surf season runs from December to April; most surf schools are closed during the rainy season, from August to November.

5. The Caribbean Coast

Best place for turtle spotting

On Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast , the flooded forest of Parque Nacional Tortuguero has been dubbed a mini Amazon.

It’s home to 400 bird species and from July to October, it's a sanctuary for nesting green sea turtles. Look out for manatees, caiman and crocodiles as you tour its skinny waterways by boat or kayak.

To the south is the diminutive Parque Nacional Cahuita and its namesake village, which protects coastal rainforest, coral reefs and pristine beaches.

Further south, the laid-back Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the Caribbean Coast’s most developed beach town, with an Afro-Caribbean vibe and lively nightlife.

The village of Manzanillo is quieter, set in the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge , where you can snorkel the reefs, kayak through mangroves and hike along rainforest trails. Cycle 4km (2.5 miles) to chill on the idyllic palm-fringed beach at Punta Uva – set your alarm to catch a spectacular sunrise.

6. Manuel Antonio National Park

Best place for getting up close to wildlife

Fronted by spectacular volcanic-sand beaches and backed by lush rainforest,  Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica’s smallest national park and one of its most popular.

Hiking along its well-marked trails is one of the easiest ways to spot wildlife – but don’t expect to have it to yourself.

You may spot a black spiny-tailed iguana perched above the entrance gate, boisterous squirrel monkeys scampering from tree to tree or marauding racoons searching for a snack.

And with the help of a guide, you might catch a glimpse of a flamboyant poison dart frog no bigger than a thumbnail or a shadow that turns into a snoozing three-toed sloth.

Planning tip: Get to the park before 10am to avoid tour groups and peak heat – it opens at 7am and is closed on Tuesdays.   

7. The Central Valley

Best place for volcanoes, coffee and rafting

At the heart of the country, the  Central Valley encompasses the cities of San José, Heredia, Cartago and Alajuela, and three active volcanoes. Irazú is the country’s highest – on a clear day, you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts from the summit. 

Turrialba is its most active, and at  Poás you can peer into its enormous craters, one belching sulfurous mud, another filled with a shimmering lagoon.

Close to Poás, the  La Paz Waterfall Gardens  offers a multitude of natural wonders and Costa Rica’s largest animal sanctuary, and the town of Turrialba is the launching pad for white water rafting on the scenic  Pacuare River , a waterway packed with adrenaline-inducing rapids.

And don’t miss a tour around an organic coffee finca, such as  Finca Rosa Blanca , to see how the beans are plucked, dried and roasted before a cupping session.

8. San José

Best place for museums and nightlife

Don't bypass the urban jungle:  San José , Costa Rica’s cosmopolitan capital, is worth a stopover.

There’s a dazzling collection of gold at the Museo de Oro Precolombino y Numismática , while the state-of-the-art Museo de Jade houses the world’s largest collection of pre-Columbian jade, or you can tour the architectural splendor of the Teatro Nacional .

The buzzy Mercado Central is perfect for souvenir shopping, and trendy Barrio Escalante is the city’s gastro hub, where you can feast on farm-to-table fare and sample local craft brews – there's organic coffee for the morning after.

Planning tip: If you want to go museum hopping, buying a three-museum pass covering the Museo de Oro Precolombino y Numismática, Museo de Jade and Museo Nacional will save you money.

There are so many great reasons to visit Costa Rica, and this blog has covered many of them, like the beaches , the volcanoes , the wildlife and biodiversity, and even the off-the-beaten-path gems .

But Costa Rica is more than just a great location for a vacation. Costa Rica is more than just great beaches. A trip to Costa Rica is food for the soul. This article will give you some personal insight into why you should visit Costa Rica, what to expect, and what makes a trip to Costa Rica so memorable.

Build global awareness

For many travelers, a trip to Costa Rica may be their first time traveling outside of their own country. It is sometimes said that “Costa Rica is Latin America for beginners.” One of the things that makes Costa Rica such a special place to visit is that it is a safe place for travelers – especially families with children – to build global awareness.

Global awareness is learning how different societies live and organize themselves. A trip to Costa Rica provides travelers an opportunity to compare and contrast Costa Rica to other countries.

Learn about the natural world

When nature is all around, as it is in Costa Rica, it is easy to begin to build knowledge and insights into the natural world.

For example, as soon as they spot a sloth sitting high above in a guarumo tree, kids will be on the hunt for that same tree and will begin to learn how to distinguish it from all other trees. They will also pay more attention to the earth beneath their feet as they look out for the ever-present leaf-cutting ants that build highways in the grass.

Adults will find delight in spotting the riotously loud oropendula birds and their nests which hang from high treetops. Or they will begin to identify the different flowers that they see in each destination like the birds of paradise, the hibiscus, the heliconias, and bromeliads.

Paying attention to the natural world strengthens awareness and helps us to be better stewards of that world. Costa Rica is one of the best places to learn about the natural world that surrounds us due to its abundant wildlife and biodiversity.

Get healthy with a Pura Vida lifestyle

Getting healthy is another great benefit of spending some time in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is one of the healthiest nations in the Americas, consistently ranking higher in health indexes than its neighboring countries, including the United States. This is part of the reason why Costa Rica has become such a popular destination for digital nomads and retirees.

When a family or a couple travels to Costa Rica, they can try out a slightly different lifestyle for a short period, sometimes resulting in a changed lifestyle back home!

D. Zip Lining-

E. Snorkeling/ Scuba Diving –

G. Surfing –

Tamarindo Beach is the best spot to surf for beginners.

H. Fishing –

I. Cave Spelunking –

In 1945, a farmer fell through a hole in the earth. The farmer discovered a chamber full of stalactites and stalagmites. This cavern is now known as the Venado Caves, an underground maze filled with limestone labyrinth carved by underground rivers.

J. Horseback Riding –

What better way to explore Costa Rica than on a horse? Traverse the misty mountainside or go horseback riding along the beach.

K. Biking –

You can go biking through the charming rural villages or the mountains, jungles, and volcanos.

Costa Rica is home to world-class beaches on two coasts: the  Pacific  and the  Caribbean . The Caribbean coast is more laidback and less developed. A. Tamarindo Beach:

Tamarindo Beach is perfect for beginner surfers. Langosta white sand beach is also worth a visit.

B. Dominical Beach –

Dominical Beach on the South Pacific coast is also well known as one of the best places to go surfing. The beach offers a year-round lifeguard program.

C. Conchal Beach –

The best beach to visit and snorkel at is Conchal Beach. Do not forget to bring your snorkeling gear!

D. Samara Beach:

The best beach to kayak and sport fishing is in the calm waters off Samara Beach.

E. Punta Uva:

Punta Uva is a quiet and calm white sand beach on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. There is a coral reef on this beach, so there will be tropical fish to go and see for yourself! Again, do not forget your underwater camera and snorkel gear!

F. Manzanillo Beach-

This laidback, turquoise beach is home to coral reefs, where you can snorkel, dive, or kayak.

Reason #4: The Natural Beauty:

Costa Rica has a diverse landscape to discover because you can see volcanos, rainforests, jungles, beaches, waterfalls, and mountains. The landscapes are magnificent, and the country preserves and protects their natural beauty.

A. Volcanoes-

Costa Rica is home to 100 volcanoes. Seven volcanoes are active today. An active volcano means the volcano has erupted in the last 10,000 years. The five must-see volcanoes are Arenal Volcano, Poas Volcano, Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, and Irazu Volcano.

B. Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours:

Hiking and kayaking are ways to explore the jungle in Costa Rica.  Tortuguero National Park  is primarily known for the sea turtles that come to shore; however, there are mangrove waterways with jungle undergrowth you can go kayaking through. The best place to go hiking in the jungle is  Corcovado National Park.

C. Rainforest Destinations:

51% of Costa Rica is a rainforest. These numbers have declined due to deforestation.

What is a Rainforest? A rainforest is a tropical forest with tall trees and heavy year-round rainfall. Colorful flora and Guanacaste trees in the rainforest are exquisite. There are over 10,000 species of plants.

Manuel Antonio National Park  has the best beach in all of Costa Rica. It takes about 30 minutes to hike from the entrance through the rainforest to Manuel Antonio Beach.

Other:  The best rainforest destinations include Piedras Blancas National Park, Carara National Park, and Cahuita National Park.

Reason #5: The Wildlife:

Costa Rica is the most biodiverse country in the world. You will be amazed by the amount of wildlife you will see when you visit. Costa Rica is home to more than 230 species of mammals. You will see sloths lounging, monkeys swinging from branches, iguanas everywhere, brightly colored tree frogs, and more. Did you know? There are six toucan species in Costa Rica. They only eat fruit. Costa Rica´s Green Season! 5 Reasons to Visit.

Costa Rica is a green country, but during part of the year, it is even greener! Unlike its more northern neighbors, Costa Rica has just two seasons, each lasting six months.  This is characteristic of a tropical country. Costa Rica has a dry or “golden” season and a wet or “green” season. Why visit Costa Rica in the Green Season? Let´s look at five reasons to visit Costa Rica and Guanacaste during this colorful season of the year! 

Guanacaste is Costa Rica´s northwestern province and sits partly on the Nicoya Peninsula. It is on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. White sand beaches, pristine waters, and blue, sunny skies are part of the Guanacaste coastline, which is stunning. Lazy Lizard Sailing shows its guests part of this beautiful part of the world on its morning and sunset tours that leave daily from the newly opened Flamingo Marina .

When is the Wet Season in Costa Rica?

The wet season in Costa Rica runs from mid-May to mid-November, with some transition time on either side. The dry season runs from mid-November to mid-May.

What is the main difference between these two seasons?

During the dry or the “golden” season, there is little to no rain on the Pacific coast and Central Valley during the six months of the year. During the wet or “green” season, this part of the country has afternoon showers that last a couple of hours and nearly are clockwork. As midday arrives, the clouds cover the blue skies, and the rains begin soon after, lasting a few hours and usually lifting around sunset at 5:30 pm.

With daily rains comes incredible differences between the two seasons. The colors, aromas, and flavors of Costa Rica become more intense, and signature migratory animals arrive at its shores too. While Costa Rica is beautiful at any time of the year, its beauty is enhanced as the rains bring new life and renewed growth. The rains refresh and revitalize.  

Let´s explore Guanacaste and why the wet season is a great time to visit Costa Rica!

1. Whale Watching

From July through to October, the migratory and majestic Humpback Whales reach the Pacific Ocean shores and protected tropical waters of Costa Rica, and they are a sight to see! They come to breed, give birth to their calves, and nurture them in preparation for the swim back to Antarctica.

While most of the Humpback Whales congregate on the southern Pacific Coast, they are sighted frequently as they move up and down the Guanacaste coast. So, during your Lazy Lizard Sailing tour , you may well see these gentle giants of the oceans cruising the Guanacaste waters flapping their enormous flippers, or maybe even breaching.

Just in case, there is another whale-watching season from December to April, so if the green season is not possible, you can have a second chance to see them. These are the northern hemisphere humpback whales, whereas Costa Rica receives the southern hemisphere humpbacks during the wet season.

2. Turtle Nesting

Costa Rica is also where a variety of sea turtles come to lay their eggs, and Guanacaste is one of these privileged sanctuaries for these prehistoric marine species. At the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, thousands of Olive Ridley turtles arrive at the nine-mile-long beach to lay their eggs. This incredible feat of nature is called the “arribadas” or arrivals, and they occur from July to December, with September to November being the high season.

The same natural phenomenon occurs on the northern Caribbean coast in the Amazonia-style canals of Tortuguero.  The turtle-nesting season begins in July and ends around mid-October. No amount of rain deters these animals as they slowly make their way up the beach beyond the tideline to make the nests and then proceed to lay dozens of eggs—a true feat of Mother Nature.

3. Everything is Greener!

With rain comes new growth, and everything is green of greens. After months of little to no rain, many types of grass, underbrush, and bushes turn a golden brown, especially in Guanacaste. The vast savannas are dry and awaiting the first rains to regain their color. Rain is welcomed with new life bursting through.

Green also means beautiful contrasts from the ocean as you look towards the green forests that embrace the beaches and headlands. Lazy Lizard Sailing tours take you around the coastline, so enjoy the vibrant blues and greens as you relax on the catamaran and enjoy the fresh sea breeze.

4. Afternoon naps are more relaxing

The great thing about the Costa Rica wet season is that the mornings are still sunny and perfect for sunbaking on the beach or by the pool. Take an early morning walk or run to start your day with a burst of energy and enjoy the sunny, blue skies and refreshing tropical waters. By lunchtime, your Vitamin C and D intake are just enough, and that post-lunch “afternoon dip” in energy calls for a nap!

Let´s be honest; it is delicious to sleep listening to the rain. It is meditative and is the best way to regain lost energy from the morning in the sun and lunch. It is also the perfect introduction to that afternoon, Costa Rican coffee, for an additional lift. So, for a great way to enjoy the wet season´s sunny mornings, take the Lazy Lizard morning tour , enjoy the sun, and have a swim and a snorkel.

5. Fewer travelers

The wet season is also the time that Costa Rica receives fewer visitors. Most travelers come during the dry season, which means more lines and more waits .  The northern hemisphere winter means busier times for Guanacaste and Costa Rica in general.

As the winter whites melt away, Costa Rica slows down, bringing new opportunities for eager travelers wanting to experience Costa Rica and its treasures. So, the wet season means more pool lounge chairs, fewer hikers on the trails, and more beaches for you to enjoy. April is the best time to visit the country during this season. Some of the most captivating things during this month are the lush green foliage and warm sun. April is during the high season so there may be more tourists around, but the weather and events make it worth it.

Some popular festivities for Juan Santamaria Day include dancing, parades, concerts, and even marching bands. Although the holiday is celebrated in many areas of Costa Rica the main events occur in the city of Alajuela. When Chris Ingham Brooke, a digital publishing entrepreneur, first came to Nosara, Costa Rica in 2016 it was just a sleepy little surf town, with one main drag and jungle stretching to the sand.

“It had become really vibrant and interesting,” he said. Still, there weren’t many options when it came to luxury family-friendly accommodations.  

He bought a commercial lot and three years later, in March, opened Silvestre—a boutique resort with nine, 1,000-square-foot residences, a rooftop bar, a yoga studio, and a surf “concierge.” Located steps from the beach path to Playa Guiones, Silvestre sits on one of the most consistent surf breaks in the world. 

International visitors to Costa Rica jumped 17 percent last year from 2022, and the number of visitors this January was up 59 percent from January 2023 with new direct flights being added from Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, and Houston, according to the Costa Rican Tourism Board.    

While Costa Rica’s draw is not its amenities or nightlife (although they are improving), the year-round warm weather makes it a polestar for outdoors addicts, with perfect conditions for surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and mountain biking. The jet set here are more likely to gather to watch sunsets than disco. It’s much-touted Blue Zone wellness culture and unspoiled beaches and forests are bait for chakras that are better aligned. 

What’s coming to Guanacaste

An incredible 18 properties are slated to open by 2025, including two new luxury properties that will hit the market at the end of this year: Nekajui, a Ritz Carlton Reserve Hotel and Residences and Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique. A Six Senses Resort and Spa Papagayo is expected to open in late 2025. 

The Waldorf Astoria, located 30 minutes from the Liberia Airport, will have 188 guest rooms and suites and 41 residences built into the hillside with its own sandy beach, signature restaurants, cenote-themed spa, teen center, and kids club, including eco-tourism experiences in the surrounding área. 

“We won’t just take care of the kids at the club, we will help them experience different things about the country,” said Valeria Nowotny, vice president of operations for Hilton’s resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. “Visitors here are looking for a nature experience, mixed with a little local culture.”

For luxury travelers that have struggled to find a resort in the right location with the right amenities and polish, these properties will provide new reasons to return to Guanacaste, with expanding infrastructure and more paved roads making it easier to get from place to place. 

And, despite the construction boom in the Papagayo Peninsula, the área is unlikely to be overbuilt anytime soon, thanks to the vast Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) , a UNESCO World Heritage site protecting wildlife on 400,000 acres from the shore of the Pacific surrounding these hotels to the lowland rainforests in the Caribbean basin. And while many locals complain that the nearby city of Tamarindo is becoming more like Cancun, there are limits to access on water rights to restrict development here and across Costa Rica, said Wagner Loria, an agent with Keller Williams Tamarindo.

Further south, in Nosara there are also protections that keep developers from building directly on the beach, leaving views pristine. 

“There’s a very powerful community here that’s very protective of the town,” said Brooke. “When you look back from the beach, all you can see is jungle. That makes it a very special place.”
