The NFL announced that the Green Bay Packers will play an International Series game for the first time in 2022, becoming the 32nd franchise to play in London.

The NFL confirmed on Monday five of the teams that will feature as the designated "home" team for the International Series games in 2022, with the Packers , New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars playing in London, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers featuring in the first-ever NFL regular-season game to be held in Germany, at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

The Arizona Cardinals are involved in the league's return to Mexico for the first time in three years.

New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Jaguars had already confirmed their return to Wembley Stadium for the 2022 season, while the Packers and Saints will play home games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It's Green Bay's first-ever international trip as a franchise; New Orleans will be visiting London for the third time, having won at Wembley on the prior two occasions in 2008 and 2017.

The Buccaneers, two-time Super Bowl champions, will play in the NFL's inaugural regular-season game in Germany, following the announcement in February that Munich and Frankfurt will host two games each alternating over the next four years.

Rodgers still deciding on Packers future

NFL International Series hosts for 2022 season

The Packers, in 2022, are scheduled to have home games against their NFC North divisional opponents - the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings - as well as hosting the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, the defending Super Bowl-champion Los Angeles Rams, the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. One of those games will be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford passes against the Cincinnati Bengals during the first half of the NFL Super Bowl LVI

Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said: "The Green Bay Packers are excited to make our international debut during the 2022 season,

"Our fans in the UK and elsewhere in Europe have been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to see the Packers play in their backyard, and we know that many of our fans in the United States will travel to London.

"It will be an honor to represent the NFL, as well as Green Bay and the state of Wisconsin, internationally. This will be a great opportunity to introduce the Packers, as well Green Bay and our area, to an international audience and encourage fans in the UK to visit us in person at Lambeau Field."

Brett Gosper, NFL Head of Europe and UK, said: "We have a great lineup of teams coming to the UK and Germany this year.

"Having the Packers become the 32nd team to play in London is tremendously exciting for the fans and a great sign of the League's commitment to international games.

"The Saints have been long-time supporters of the UK, having volunteered to be the home team in the second year of London games in 2008, and we welcome them back.

"We are very excited to have a recent Super Bowl champion in the Buccaneers playing in Munich and thank them for ensuring that it will be a memorable launch of our series of games in Germany."

Wild Card Round - New York Giants v Green Bay Packers

Fans looking to attend the Green Bay Packers ’ first game abroad in the United Kingdom can now circle some important dates on their calendars. On Wednesday, the NFL formally announced details of ticket sales for the 2022 International Series games, which include the Packers’ week five matchup with the New York Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Most critically, the on-sale date for members of the public will be Tuesday July 26th, starting at 10:00 AM London time (5:00 AM Eastern/2:00 AM Pacific). Full details, including the link to the page where ticket sales will take place, can be found here on the NFL’s website.

Public tickets will be priced between £64-£146. The current exchange rate as of June 1st is approximately 1 GBP = 1.25 USD, so that price range equates to roughly $80-$185.

The on-sale date for public tickets will come very close to the start of training camps around the NFL. The Packers are hosting an exhibition soccer game at Lambeau Field between Manchester City and Bayern Munich on July 23rd, followed closely by the team’s Shareholders Meeting. Look for the team to announce its training camp schedule in the coming weeks, with the first practice likely taking place sometime around Thursday, July 28th.

As an additional option, the NFL offers a season ticket package for all NFL games at Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Signing up as a season ticket holder appears to be the only way to guarantee seats for the game prior to the July 26th on-sale date for public tickets. The sign-up period for new season tickets begins on June 30th, while renewals for current season ticket holders will begin on June 20th.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 62,000 people, with the highest attendance for an NFL game coming last year at 60,784 for the game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins .

Again, the game against the Giants will be the Packers’ first in London since the NFL started hosting games there in 2007. Coincidentally, the Giants were the winners of the very first game in London, as they defeated the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium in 2007. The Giants have played in London one other time, a 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 at Twickenham Stadium.

Green Bay Packers, in London for Sunday's NFL game, give Abbey Road photo their own spin

LONDON – John, Paul, George and Ringo?

Or LeRoy, Marv, Nick and James?

The Green Bay Packers' invasion of London took over one of the most iconic spots in a city that seems to be nothing but iconic spots when a double-decker Packers-themed bus filled with team representatives stopped at Abbey Road on Friday. Shouts of "Go Pack Go" from the roof of the bus announced its arrival.

The Abbey Road crossing made famous by The Beatles album cover of the same name could have been Oneida Street in Green Bay, so populated was it by Packers fans. And, in due course, actual Packers, including team President and CEO Mark Murphy, Pro Football Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler, and Packers Hall of Famers James Jones, Nick Collins and Marv Fleming.

The Packers are in London to play the New York Giants at 8:30 a.m. (Central Time) Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They are the last NFL team to play in the International Series and the team and its fans are embracing the opportunity with gusto.

Dennise and Don Lavrenz of Waukesha made the pilgrimage to the white-striped crosswalk, wearing their Packers gear, including Don's Ray Nitschke jersey, quite unaware the Packers bus was headed their way. Fair to say, they weren't disappointed by the surprise as their "trip of a lifetime" got bigger.

Thirty-year season-ticket holders, they got more pictures than they planned, assured Murphy they'd attend the Packers pep rally on Saturday, and renewed acquaintance with Fleming, who Don golfed with during a charity fundraiser a few years back. Dennise even offered Murphy her Packers scarf for a picture with them because she deemed him short of adequate amounts of green and gold.

"We put our son on the season ticket list when he was born 31 years ago," Dennise said. "We signed up for every list we could."

Packers in London: Why are the Packers playing in London vs the Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium? An overview of the NFL's International Series.

Abbey Road was the last stop of the day for the bus, which visited Millennium Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge.

The Packers hall of famers mingled with Abbey Road pilgrims, some of whom were not Packers fans, hard as that may be to believe. They also did their best to recreate the photo of the four Beatles crossing the street while London drivers, more or less, patiently bore what is clearly a daily annoyance on a still-active street.

James Jones even offered to take off his shoes, à la Paul McCartney.

Current Packers players are in town as well, having arrived overnight, but are keeping a low profile ahead of Sunday's game. For the players, this trip is all business. They'll leave immediately after the game Sunday to return to Green Bay to prepare to host New York City's other team, the Jets, on Oct. 16 at Lambeau Field.

Finally in London, Green Bay Packers players embrace the chance to experience what the city has to offer

packers tour london

WATFORD, England – It’s a trek from the Green Bay Packers hotel to downtown London. Tucked on a hill, their makeshift football home this week is a sprawling prairie plucked straight from an English postcard, almost an hour northwest of the nation’s capital.

A little traffic wasn’t stopping Aaron Rodgers from enjoying another international city. The Packers quarterback is a world traveler, gaining a deep respect for the world’s game along the way. He returned to Green Bay a few days early for training camp when Lambeau Field hosted Manchester City and Bayern Munich  in July.

With the United States women’s national team playing England in a friendly at historic Wembley Stadium on Friday night, Rodgers made plans two days before his team played the New York Giants in its first game outside North America.

“I want to get out and see the city a little bit,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers didn’t hide his enthusiasm for playing in London, saying he wished the Packers could have arrived a couple of days earlier, or stayed a day later, or perhaps both. “It’s about time we’re here,” he said. The quarterback wasn’t the only one who embraced this American invasion across the Atlantic Ocean.

Whether it was genuine or not, coach Matt LaFleur smiled when discussing his team’s visit to London before Friday’s practice. LaFleur poked fun at himself for being cranky this week before arriving in London, though he had good reason considering the Packers’ preparation schedule. All of the heavy lifting was done before boarding their charter flight in Green Bay, leaving just a jog-through practice Friday.

“If you ask our team,” LaFleur said, “they're excited to be here. They're ready to play just to change it up a little bit. I think a lot of our players, it’s their first experience over here. So I think they’re really excited for it.”

The Packers aren’t excited only to play. LaFleur gave strict orders Friday not to go to sleep after their practice, which concluded before 2 p.m. British Summer Time, combatting the brutal jet lag of a 6-hour time change. That left a window Friday for players to explore one of the world’s most prominent cities.

Many players brought their families along for the unique trip. Kicker Mason Crosby, whose only other visit to London came when he was 9 years old, brought his wife and three kids. While his family intended to do more exploring when Crosby was tending to his duties with the team, he hoped to visit Buckingham Palace with them.

Aaron Jones had dinner plans with his mother and twin brother, Alvin. Same for Rashan Gary with his mother, but not until he got a massage and film study. Jaire Alexander planned to walk around, taking in the countryside.

“I just want to take in the scenery,” Alexander said. “Just take in everything while I’m here. I don’t do much anyway, so I might as well stay focused.

“I’ll just roam around where we stand and just be outside. Nothing too crazy.”

Alexander made no promises he’d skip a nap after practice. “Because I’m tired,” he said. The Packers set a team curfew of midnight, tight end Marcedes Lewis said.

He expected most players, weary from their long travel, to be back at their hotel much earlier.

“I’m going to get some food,” Lewis said. “I’ve got some people in the city. So I’ll probably catch a train with (Randall) Cobb, go get some food, relax a little bit, come back. By the time, like 8:30 or 9, I’m out.

“Everybody will be in by like 9.”

Rodgers was an exception. The U.S. women’s national team’s friendly was scheduled for 7 p.m. BST. That timeline put him on track to easily make the team’s curfew if he stayed for the entire match, but if it’s a trek to London, it was also a journey to return to the Packers hotel.

The quarterback was in no rush. He described this as a bucket list trip, saying it’s a game he’ll remember long after his career is over.

“When you go to different countries,” Rodgers said, “and experience different cultures and foods and people and lifestyles and history, it actually brings you closer together. Because you realize there’s less differences between us than we might be told to think, and I think it’s great if we can get our guys that have never been – maybe been to Canada once or Mexico once – to get them out of the country. To experience life in other places.

“I think it can only help our perspective, and give us that understanding of how special this opportunity is that we get to do, and maybe to cherish it a little bit more. Because we are inspiring other people, and even other fans in other countries.”

Watch the Packers take off for London from Green Bay's airport

ASHWAUBENON (WLUK) -- It's going to be a green and gold British invasion when the Green Bay Packers take on the New York Giants in London.

With the game less than two weeks away, Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is getting ready to bring fans and the team across the pond.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, fans are invited to see some of the team fly out from Austin Straubel to London.

Plane spotters can park in the GRB Observation Lot for free or for a fee, park in the parking lot. They can then walk toward the fence to watch the Virgin Atlantic 787-900 Dreamliner take off.

Flight times are subject to change, but as of now, the plane is scheduled to arrive at GRB at 2:45 p.m. and depart with the team for London's Heathrow Airport at 5:20 p.m.

The team is estimated to return home at midnight after the game, hopefully with a victory.

“We’re happy to see fans flying out of GRB for the game,” stated Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “While the game is being played overseas, it’s creating a lot of excitement right here at home. It’s part of what makes Brown County such a great place to live and work.”

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers still are in the running to open the season in Brazil, but are unlikely to go to London this year.

The Philadelphia Eagles open the season on Sept. 6, a Friday, in São Paulo at Arena Corinthians, home to the Brazilian soccer team the SC Corinthians. The team that will play the Eagles has yet to be announced by the NFL. The Packers or the Cleveland Browns are reported to be the top choices. The Packers expect an announcement at any time.

"We are still in the running," Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said Tuesday before the Packers Tailgate Tour bus departed Lambeau Field for southern Wisconsin. "I think we are either the first- or second-most popular team in Brazil. We are kind of the people's team. People really like the idea of a community-owned team. If we are chosen, we'll gladly go."

Teams designated for international games this year include the Eagles in Sao Paulo; the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars in London; and the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Germany. The Packers have road games against the Eagles, Vikings, Bears and Jaguars. Divisional games are no longer automatically excluded, but Murphy said a London trip was not likely.

"I don't think that's a possibility," he said.

Packers Tailgate Tour will cover 500 miles in southern Wisconsin

The 500-mile tailgate tour, which includes current and former Packers players, plus Murphy, will continue through Saturday. Announced stops include Kenosha, Beloit, Platteville and Sun Prairie. Unannounced stops also will be made along the way.

Current players on the bus include Elgton Jenkins, Kenny Clark and Rasheed Walker. Former players include Bryan Bulaga, Mike Daniels and Alex Green. Jenkins was on the tour in 2023, as well.

"I had a lot of fun last year," Jenkins said. "I like interacting with kids."

The current and former players each said they were excited about the Packers' prospects this year. In 2023, the Packers, against expectations, finished with a 9-8 record, defeated the favored Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs and nearly defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the next round. They did defeat the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs during the regular season. Last year was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Packers.

Jenkins said Packers players during the offseason are getting ready for the coming year. "We have to be ready to start fast," he said.

Rasheed Walker gets positive reviews from bus mates

Rasheed Walker, who finished last season as the starting left tackle, got positive comments from Jenkins and former Packers tackle Brian Bulaga, who said he was looking forward to spending time with him on the bus.

"I could always kind of put a couple pointers in his ear for him and pick his brain a little bit about how he's doing and what he's thinking out there," Bulaga said. "At the end of the season, when he finally won that job over, I thought he did a nice job."

The Packers like paring former and current players on the tour because it gives the veterans a chance to mentor the young players. Jenkins and Clark are seasoned pros, but Walker, in only his second season last year, is still finding his way.

"If you're an offensive lineman and you're a young guy and you're starting, you're expected to hold your weight. It doesn't matter if you're a rookie, it doesn't matter what year, you're expected to hold your weight and play well," said Bulaga, who was drafted in the first round in 2010, became a starting tackle during the season and played in the Super Bowl.

Daniels, Clark looking forward to new defensive scheme

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels, who played for the Packers from 2012-18, is on his first tailgate tour. A fan favorite in Green Bay, Daniels said he was excited to meet fans in other parts of the state.

"People who don't live around the stadium have a different appreciation when they see the guys in green and gold," he said.

Daniels and Clark said they both were excited to see what new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will bring to the team. They are looking forward to a more simplified scheme, which will allow players like Clark to take off.

"You might as well get Kenny Clark's Hall of Fame jacket ready now," Daniels said.

Clark said Hafley will challenge everybody to be great.

"I'm excited about (the new scheme) being more disruptive. That's better for me," Clark said. "It will give you that mentality to cut it loose."

Alex Green had a brief career, playing for Green Bay in 2011 and 2012, and the New York Jets in 2013, but that made him no less welcome as a Packers alumnus.

"You always hear, once a Packer, always a Packer," Green said.

Why the Browns have a good chance to face the Jaguars in London now that the Packers are going to Brazil: Mary Kay Cabot

  • Updated: Apr. 11, 2024, 4:51 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 10, 2024, 4:16 p.m.

Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt goes airborne on a fourth plunge across the line of scrimmage defended by Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd

  • Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns won’t need to brush up on their Portuguese, but they might still need to update their passports.

With the NFL announcing on Wednesday that the Green Bay Packers will face the Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil, on Sept. 6 instead of the Browns, the Browns are still very much in play to face the Jaguars in London’s Wembley Stadium at some point in 2024, exact date to be announced.

The NFL hasn’t made a decision yet on who will face the “home team” Jaguars in one of the five international games this season, but league sources say there’s a good chance it could be the Browns, for a number of reasons.

Of the eight opponents on the Jaguars’ home schedule, only three have a realistic chance of joining them across the pond in the Browns, Patriots and Jets.

Three of the opponents, of course, are AFC South foes, and the NFL likes to keep those big rivalry games on the home turf. That effectively rules out the Texans, Colts, and Titans.

The Packers, as mentioned, were announced Wednesday as the Eagles’ opponent for the first NFL game in South America, a day after the Thursday Night Football season opener Sept. 5 in Kansas City between the Chiefs and an unnamed opponent. The Packers’ immense popularity in Brazil made them a natural choice for the historic game.

The Vikings are also out of the mix considering they’re already playing one of two games in London’s Tottenham Stadium as the home team against an unnamed opponent.

That leaves just the Browns, Patriots and Jets as teams with a bona fide chance of seeing Big Ben this season, and we’re not talking about Roethlisberger.

The NFL has already reached out to the top candidates to discuss logistics and scheduling, but nothing has been decided yet. Of the three, the Jets have played in London most recently, in 2021. They also played there in 2015.

The Browns have played in London once, on Oct. 29, 2017, when they lost 33-16 to the Vikings in Twickenham Stadium en route to their 0-16 record. Kevin Stefanski was the Vikings quarterbacks coach that game.

The Patriots have gone the longest without playing in London, since 2012. They also played there in 2009.

Another reason the Browns might get the nod is because they really wanted to go to Brazil, and perhaps this would be a nice consolation prize. The Browns, who have a strong following in London, beat the Jaguars 31-27 in Week 14 last season with Joe Flacco at the helm. Flacco went 26 of 45 for 311 yards with three TDs and one INT for a 92.0 passer rating. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence gutted it out on a high right ankle sprain suffered only six days beforehand in a 34-31 loss to the Bengals on Monday Night Football Dec. 5.

Sacked four times, Lawrence threw three touchdowns and three interceptions en route to a 65.2 rating. Martin Emerson Jr. picked him off twice, and Greg Newsome II once.

Still, the 2021 No. 1 overall pick out of Clemson stormed back from a 21-7 third-quarter deficit at Cleveland Browns Stadium to pull to within 31-27 on a 2-yard TD pass to tight end Evan Engram with 1:33 left in the game. The two-point pass failed, or the Browns could have been in trouble.

The victory left both teams at 8-5, but going in different directions. It kicked off a string of four straight victories for the Browns en route to an 11-6 finish and only their third playoff berth since 1999, while the Jaguars won only one more game to finished 9-8 and miss the playoffs.

A Jaguars vs. Browns game in London would feature two former Clemson signal-callers squaring off in Lawrence and Deshaun Watson, the No. 12 overall pick of the Texans in 2017. Watson, coming off surgery to repair his fractured right shoulder socket, aims to play his first full season for the Browns and lead them to the Super Bowl.

With the Browns not going to Brazil, they’ll face the Eagles in Philadelphia, and now possibly the Jaguars in London. Their other road opponents are AFC foes Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Baltimore, as well as Denver, Washington, Las Vegas, and New Orleans.

Their non-division home opponents are the L.A. Chargers, Kansas City, Dallas, the New York Giants and Miami.

Here is the international slate for 2024, with dates and opponents to be announced in the coming weeks. The full NFL schedule will be released in early May:

  • Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers Sept. 6 — Sao Paulo — Corinthians Arena
  • Chicago Bears — London — Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Minnesota Vikings — London — Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Jacksonville Jaguars — London — Wembley Stadium
  • Carolina Panthers — Munich — Allianz Arena.

2024 NFL schedule: Packers have one travel concern for their historic game in Brazil against the Eagles

The packers seem to have one small complaint about being sent to brazil.

packers-logo-g.jpg

The Green Bay Packers are officially headed for Brazil , and now, they just have to figure out how to get there. Getting to a road game isn't usually a complicated process for an NFL team , but it could be for the Packers when they make their trip down to São Paulo for their 2024 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles .

The Packers concern is that they likely won't be able to fly directly to South America, which means they'll either have to schedule a layover somewhere or they'll have to take the nearly two-hour bus ride to Milwaukee to fly out of the airport there.

Packers president Mark Murphy outlined the concern during an interview at the NFL 's annual league meeting on March 26 (The Packers hadn't been chosen for the game yet, but they were considered a finalist at that point).

"The one issue with Green Bay is the size of our airport and the size of our runway, and we want to make sure that we're not at a competitive disadvantage in terms of how long it's going to take us to get to Brazil," Murphy said. "There's some thought that we might have to bus to Milwaukee and then fly, just some of those things."

When the Packers flew to London in 2022, they were able to take off from Green Bay for the 3,830-mile flight, but for São Paulo, the team will be traveling nearly 5,400 miles, which means the Packers will likely need a bigger plane and as Murphy notes, the airport in Green Bay isn't equipped to handle larger planes.

If the Packers have to bus to Milwaukee, that would take about two hours and if you add that to the roughly 10.5-hour flight, that would put their travel time at nearly 13 hours. As for the Eagles, they'll easily be able to fly from Philadelphia and their flight will only take about 9.5 hours.

"Philadelphia will just hop on a plane and go down (there)," Murphy said on April 9,  via Madison.com .

As things stand today, the Packers are still trying to figure out how they're going to get to South America.

"We're not sure exactly what we'll have to do to get to Brazil," Murphy said.

There's a good chance that the Eagles don't feel sorry for the Packers at all. Philadelphia is giving up a home game to play in Brazil, so the fact that the Packers might have to deal with a few travel issues adds an element of home-field advantage that the Eagles are otherwise losing.

Although Murphy isn't thrilled with the travel situation, he is thrilled that the Packers are playing in such a huge game for the NFL.

"We're looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo," Murphy said on Wednesday after the game was officially announced. "We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth."

The Week 1 matchup, which will be the NFL's first-ever regular-season game in Brazil, will kick off on Friday, Sept. 6 and it will be streaming exclusively on Peacock. It's the NFL's first Friday game in Week 1 since 1970.

The Packers Must Avoid A Repeat Of London In Brazil Opener

packers tour london

The NFL’s international agenda is getting increasingly exotic. Earlier this week, the league announced that the Green Bay Packers would be heading to São Paulo to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL’s 2024 opener. It will be the league’s first-ever game in South America. Slating it in one of the most anticipated primetime slots of the year shows how much the NFL has scaled up its international growth initiative. London games have become a staple over the last few years. But after mixing in games in Mexico City in 2022 and Germany in 2023, the game is headed to a whole new continent.

Brazil will be Green Bay’s second entry in the international series. After evading London for years, they finally took an infamous trip in 2022. There, Daniel Jones and the New York Giants topped them, 27-22. As disastrous as that sentence sounds, because of the lingering jet lag and fatigue that followed, London was the first domino in the series of events that had Aaron Rodgers ’ “Last Dance” out of the ballroom by Wild Card Weekend. The Packers lost their next four games, including the perhaps equally infamous drubbing at Lambeau Field by Zach Wilson ’s New York Jets, which resulted in Sauce Gardner strolling around in the now-burnt cheesehead.

So there was understandable apprehension when the Packers continued to surface on all the shortlists ahead of the announcement. The massive popularity of the franchise in Brazil, combined with the rising optimism around the team’s new young core, made them an easy choice. According to Daire Carragher, approximately 12.5% of Brazil’s NFL fans support the Packers.

While 2022’s London trip resulted in the loss of a home game, they’ll have nine home games, seven on the road, and one at a neutral site where they are expected to have a strong backing. However, a minor hurdle is Arena Corinthians’ informal ban on the color green, which belongs to their rival soccer club. They allegedly take it very seriously, but slating Packers and Eagles fans for a trip down there in their team’s colors seems to be putting them on a bit of a collision course. Nonetheless, when it comes to home-field advantage, this game won’t stand in Green Bay’s way because avoiding Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field is a victory in itself. Had they not been chosen for this game, that’s where the Packers would have been headed at some point in 2024.

After returning home in 2022, Matt LaFleur repeatedly attributed the team’s disastrous stretch to the residual jet lag from London. He admitted they should have taken their bye immediately after, which the league allows teams to do. This time, it won’t be on the table after Week 1. But there are a couple of reasons to expect a cleaner transition. It will be a lot of travel, but the two-hour time difference pales compared to the UK’s nine-hour time change. Flying almost directly south will neutralize that aspect. Furthermore, they will play the game on Friday, effectively providing a couple extra days of buffer. It feels safe to say that we can expect quality play both in and after Brazil.

The matchup on the field will be exciting. The Packers pushed the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers to the absolute brink in the Divisional Round and are now primed to take a leap into the conference’s elite tier. Philadelphia joins the Niners in that group. They fell off a cliff after the 49ers dragged them at home, and Baker Mayfield eventually waxed them to open the playoffs. That has them at the outer edge of a lot of people’s radars. But it’s still a weak conference overall, and they will return most of their talent.

After a frustrating start to 2023, Jordan Love proved he is the guy, and the team subsequently embarked on a run paralleling the Houston Texans’ in the AFC. Love first showed a massive leap in his play in Philly when Rodgers went down with a rib injury. He was poised on the road and drove down the field multiple times in the fourth quarter, looking like an entirely different quarterback than the guy who struggled during his debut in Kansas City. The offense should be exciting again this season, with room to take large steps forward as the young guys continue to develop.

The most interesting facet of the matchup will be how Jeff Hafley’s defense responds to an Avengers-level threat out of the gate. Joe Barry is gone. In a perfect world, Hafley is the guy who can finally cash in on the annual offseason hype for a unit loaded with first-round picks and well-known names. Jason Kelce is gone, but it’s hard to imagine things being too much easier with Saquon Barkley set to debut in their backfield. The league may have nerfed the tush push a little bit, but Philadelphia’s read option will be deadly. Not to be outdone, the Packers will be showing off a shiny new toy of their own in Xavier McKinney , whom Howie Roseman also targeted aggressively .

This showdown of present and future NFC heavyweights is a fantastic choice to open the season. Fortunately, the Packers will have the opportunity to exorcize the demons from their first trip abroad under much better conditions this time.

Green Bay Packers fans in Brazil thrilled to have game in São Paulo, saying: 'We will be WILD'

packers tour london

Marcus Rovere of the Packers Brasil fan site gives fair warning about the Green Bay Packers playing the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo: "Prepare yourself, we will be WILD in this game."

The Packers and Eagles will play Sept. 6 at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo. It is the first NFL game in South America and the season opener for both teams, who will each play their second regular-season international game.

Rovere, who lives in Porto Alegre, estimates there are 5 million Packers fans in Brazil, with more than 23,000 following their @PackersBR account on Twitter, now called X. The NFL estimates there are more than 35 million football fans in the country. The Packers and New England Patriots are thought to be the most popular teams.

"Soccer is very popular here, and our teams are just like the Packers. We don't have an owner; the team belongs to the fans! Of course, being a winning team is a fact, too. People here are crazy about the NFL and even without playing in a Super Bowl in last 13 seasons, we still have a lot of new (Packers) fans every year," Rovere wrote Wednesday morning to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, after the announcement was made.

Arena Corinthians, also known as NeoQuimica Arena, is home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians and hosted both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The stadium has a capacity of about 47,000.

"The expectation is a crowded arena for the game," said João Storer of Florianópolis. "São Paulo is the best city for this event, and for sure NeoQuimica Arena is the best Brazilian stadium. I’ve visited the stadium three times; it has a huge outside space for other events and tailgating."

Because of the stadium's size — Lambeau Field's capacity is 81,000 — tickets are expected to be at a premium.

"The only concern that we have are the ticket prices," said Storer, who hopes to find a Packers watch party near home if he can't secure a ticket.

Visiting teams — which the Packers are for this contest — typically do not receive a ticket allotment for season ticket holders, so tickets are not available through the Packers. Ticket packages will be available through On Location, an official partner of the NFL, at onlocationexp.com/packersbrazil .

Event USA in Ashwaubenon also is taking deposits for travel packages to the game, which company President Dennis Garrity said are in limited supply. The company provided packages to about 800 Packers fans for the game in London in 2022.

More: Will Packers fans need a Peacock subscription to watch Brazil game against Eagles?

More: Packers to open 2024 NFL season in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Philadelphia Eagles

"Regrettably, we're not going to be able to offer that much space this year, so we believe we will have a sellout quite quickly," Garrity said.

The flight to São Paulo is longer than to London, but the time zones are more forgiving. All of South America is east of Michigan, but São Paulo is only two hours ahead of Green Bay when daylight savings time is active in the United States.

With a population of 12.3 million, São Paulo is 1.5 times larger than New York or London, as populous as all of Illinois, and more than twice the size of Wisconsin. It has 50 times more residents than Brown County, and Metro São Paulo is 3,000 square miles, compared to Brown County's 530.

"São Paulo is a New York-stylish city," Rovere said. Like New York, São Paulo is a financial hub. It is the most important city in South America because of that, he said.

"It has some incredible museums, huge parks, one of the best restaurants in world and many nice people," he said.

As with any large tourist city, visitors need to be aware of their surroundings. "Don't trust everyone, keep things in a pocket, don't walk alone and do some research about where you will be and the best transport options," he said.

Rovere expects attendance at the game will heavily favor the Packers.

"We know that is gonna feel like a home game for the Packers," Rovere said.
