Ahobilam Tour

Ahobilam Tour is weekend spiritual adventure to the birthplace of Lord Narasimha. Join us on a weekend pilgrimage to Ahobilam – the abode of Nava Narasimha to experience a spiritual adventure. Join our globally famed Ahobilam Tour from the pioneers of the Ahobilam Tour in India.

Ahobilam is a divya narasimha-kshetra. It is the place where Lord Narasimha appeared out of a pillar and saved His devotee Prahlada. This place is also famous as the land of Nava Narasimha due to the nine cave temples of Lord Narasimha situated here. Ahobilam is situated in the Nallamalla forest amidst the lush green valleys, scintillating waterfalls and the meandering curves of the Bhavanashini River. Untouched by the modern development, this is a perfect place for anyone to experience divinity in the lap of nature. Ahobilam is also one among the 108 divya deshams – Srivaishnava temples.

It was a wonderful experience in my life time in Ahobilam with Tirtha Yatra. It was a well-planned and scheduled yatra. The Yatra director and co-ordinator were very helpful. The guest house was nice and the food was traditional Andhra menu. In every temple, the Yatra director tells about the history of the temple which is really informative. No other company could do this. A trekking to Pavana Narasimha temple in the Nallamalla forest is an adventures experience. And visiting Jwala, Malola and the Gurukul of Prahalada was also awesome. We all took a bath in the rushing waterfalls near Prahlada’s gurukul, which was really cool. We all chanted Narasimha mantras and keerthanas for uplifting our soul to moksha. Thank you Tirtha Yatra team for giving this opportunity to visit Ahobilam and have a memorable experience in my life time.

Hare Krishna, Thank you so much for the feedback, we are glad that you liked the yatra. We are happy to be of service to you. Do join us in our future yatra. Thank you

Amazing Trekking at Ahobilam

Its a very great pleasure to this holy place. My friend and myself started trekking at "Upper Ahobilam". Frequently there are buses running from "Lower Ahobilam". We both started trekking around morning 10:30. It will take around 4 hrs time to reach the top of the peek "Ugra stambham". Definitely We will feel very joy once we reach over there. Nature and the wind breeze will mesmerize us.

ahobilam tour reviews

To see Nava Narasimhaswamy temples, which need hard trekking, a strong willpower with God's grace is a must requirement other than physical strength.

the sacred places of our etihas- purana known to be the court yard of Hiranya kasyapa WHERE Lord Mahavishnu killed him as sri Narasinha .you have nine temples of God in this nallamala forest. takes a day to visit all of them. only thing is we have to visit them except two out of nine by walk and trekking. all nature lovers and children will enjoy a lot .

Three of friends wanted to do something different. We chose ahobilam as it gives some kind of trekking experience. So we went to Ahobilam. The tricky part of the trek is we did not wear footwear and it is a forest. It was difficult but enjoyable. The fresh air and herbal water from the riverrun are awesome. You will have many people on similar path. Good to be there again.

Nava Narasimha is the name for the nine places where Narasimha is found on the Nalamalla ranges in Ahobilam, as part of the Allagada range. The local name for 'tunnel' or 'cave' is 'Ahobila' from the root word 'bilam' which means cave/tunnel. The place offers by road darshan of UgraNarasimha (no 2) the main deity of Ahobilam, and enroute to this place is KaranjaNarasimha( no 5). From another approach through metalled road via Lower Ahobilam YoganandaNarasimha (no 7) and ChatravataNarasimha (no 8) are accessed. That leaves two more Narasimhas PavanaNarasimha( no9) and BhargavaNarasimha(no 6) which are accessed by road which is actually jungle track, jeep-able, and a little strenuous and shocker at times, jolting and jerky journey not for the faint hearted! Bhargava is shorter at less than 3km, with a small trek and a flight of about 120 stone steps to the shrine, while Pavana is about 14 km and right up to the shrine. Rainy days, wet weather makes the passage even more tricky with slush, muddy pools through which the jeeps wade. Driver boys are most confident of tackling these road spring breaking, wheel threatening curves, climbs and slippery slopes. By trek only or there is a dholi option ( bamboo easy chair with armrests and four bearers for ₹ 3000 to be hired at the very entrance to the Upper Ahobilam complex) these are shrines behind and above UgraNarasimha. JwalaNarasimha (no1) is the highest, with two routes to trek, one straight crossing the rivulet that cascades from the hills upon which most pilgrims have their baths, cook or eat by its banks, and this rivulet is full of boulders and large stones that allow criss crossing at least at a dozen places without wetting one's feet. Use of Bamboo walking stick/pole is a great advantage to keep one's balance and support for climbing up or down the steps. Half a dozen crossings and small flights of steps takes one to the fork where a wooden bridge painted blue christened Malolan Fork Bridge is present. From here a series of concrete steps takes one to Jwala. It is delightful to be wet by a waterfall under which one must traverse the last few steps to the shrine. There is a clear pool in stone cavern called Bhaktakundam, where we found some crabs! From Jwala one treks down and takes a detour via the bridge to a path that hugs the skyline and shoulders the hills until it drops gently down to MalolaNarasimha (no 3) Shrine. To the left of this shrine is a delightful detour to a rocky meadow with a waterfall and a cave shrine to Narasimha called Prahlada Padasala. Trek to Jwala is about an hour at steady pace, taking in the sights, pausing to catch breath, or observing chameleons, insects and leaf patterns. From Jwala to Malola is under an hour, less than half an hour. There are two other places which we could not trek too due to the wet weather- Ugrasthamba which is the highest point, a bare peak with cliff face all around, approached from Jwala ascent, which is supposed to take 4 hours to and fro on a fair day, involving stretches which are climbed on all fours, where as per legend Lord Narasimha first alighted on these hills and there is an imprint of feet there and Rakthakunam, a small pool where Lord Narasimha washed himself after slaying Hiranyakashipu, which is situated between Jwala and Malola parts of the hills. We stayed at Lower Ahobilam with arrangements made with Ahobilam Malolan Tours and Travel Services, who offer Iyengar meals, a guide and neat air conditioned rooms to stay in what is essentially a 'one horse town'. The hostess Komala Vaikunta is well versed with the place and her travel tips for visitors include strict consumption of water and food from reliable sources, carrying a small sling bag with umbrella, water bottles and some tiffin which can work out as a 'picnic lunch' besides addressing any pangs of hunger due to the exertions of the trek. Mobile connectivity is an issue in both the hills and the jeep-able journeys to Pavana and Bhargava Narasimha shrines. Use of bamboo stick as a local walking stick is 'mandatory' as it assists in finding balance at tricky places and helps weight distribution.

This complex is for many the starting point of their visit of NavaNarasimha Kshetra. The place can do with major make over in terms of amenities for pilgrims who throng in their thousands. On an average day nearly a thousand pilgrims visit this place in buses, lorries, tractors, cars of various sizes. There is ample parking space. All shrines by are by trek from here, with Jwala being the most distant. Shrines open by 6 am and shut by 3 pm, some shrines like Karanja and Kroda open later and shut earlier depending on availability of priests. Arrangements for queue management are evident here too. There is ticketed entry at ₹ 10 per person with special queue for ₹ 100 available as well. The Shrine has a Lingam facing Narasimha in the first cave enclosure, in the second one there is the First Jeeyar facing UgraNarasimha and on this rock platform the Utsava idols are also kept for worship. It is poorly lit and one must give the priest some easy money to make him do an aarti so that we can see the main deity clearly. Next to this is Chakrathalwar shrine and finally the Consort Goddess Senchulakshmi Devi shrine. Ventilation is very poor and it can get hot and humid in this complex. The temple towers are ill maintained with some turrets broken. Hope the administration wakes up and does some central air conditioning system, proper lighting in the sanctums and well placed signages to inform devotees about the places to visit once here with timings.

About Ahobilam

Join us on a pilgrimae to Ahobilam - the abode of Nava Narasimha and Experiance a spiritual adventure.

Ahobilam, a part of Andhra Pradesh's Karnool District located in the Eastern Ghats Mountains, is around 400 kilometers northwest of Chennai. It is recognized as one of the Vaishnava Divya Desam pilgrimage sites. The Eastern Ghats are metaphorically compared to the majestic serpent Adhisesha, with its head at Thirumala, middle at Ahobilam, and tail-end at Srisailam, each hosting prominent temples. In Ahobilam, Lord Narasimha Swamy defeated the demon Hiranyakasipu and protected Prahalada. The divine goddess Mahalakshmi appeared as Senjulakshmi, a member of the Senju tribe, a community of hill tribe hunters, and married the Lord. Ahobilam is considered the birthplace of Lord Narasimha Swamy. Special packages can be arranged for groups of five or more people on any desired date. A tour to Ahobilam departs from Chennai every week, while a tour to Swathi Tirunakshatram is organized once a month. The Weekend Tour typically starts on Friday evening and concludes on Sunday night. The package includes accommodation in Ahobilam and vegetarian meals prepared by Udipi Iyengar, a renowned culinary tradition.

Ahobilam is a divya narasimha-kshetra. It is a place where Lord Narasimha appeared out of a pillar and saved His devotee Prahlada. A memorable Ahobilam tour

We successfully completed the visit to Ahobilam Navanarasimha temples, thanks to Sree Janaki Tours Mr Ramesh. We were a group of about 30 people - majority travelling by flight from Chennai to Kadapa and covering the distance of 92 km from Kadapa to Ahobilam by a van. Others came by train and joined us at Kadapa. For visiting 4 of the 9 temples, one needs to trek up a hill. Alternatively, one can hire a doli ( a cane chair ) carried by 4 people. Whether you go trekking or use a Doli, there is a stretch that is a mix of rocks and water one has to cross . Based on my own experience, I would recommend visitors to use PVC chappals for this leg. We were pleasantly surprised to note that very few people use dolis and most have the energy, determination and devotion to trek the full distance upto Jwala Narasimha temple and trek back. The tedious part is covering another 2 temples inside the forest area by a Jeep. It being a forest area, roads are almost non-existent but you have drivers highly skilled to negotiate it. Mr Ramesh of Sree Janaki Tours is ably assisted by Deepak in coordinating and taking care of the needs of the pilgrims. Deepak trekked on double speed and carried breakfast to the pilgrims who went by Doli early morning to Jwala Narasimha temple. What we thought would be an arduous tour actually turned out to be memorable and enjoyable , thanks to our lively group and all finer details that Mr Ramesh and team had taken care of.

We had a blissful experience visiting the Nava Narasimha temples at Ahobilam. Anyone will certainly enjoy the trek to the Narasimha temples located in the mountains and the darshan of the Lord will surely make you feel grateful. Doli is available for those who would like to avail. My infinite thanks to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha for bringing us here and giving us darshan. I would also like to extend my thanks to Mr. Naveen (9542273522) for guiding us through the temples and making our journey memorable. He stuck with us right from the start (at 5:30 a.m.) till the end (at 10 p.m. due to delay caused by rush) and ensured that we had a very satisfying experience. He arranged for the jeep as well for visiting Pavana Narasima and Bhargava Narasimha temples which are in forest. He also recommended a very good and clean guest house (Amruthavalli Guest House - 9642393865) which was quite suitable for family.

Ahobilam - Most powerful Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple located in Kurnool district at Andhra Pradesh state. This temple is also known as Thiru Singavel Kundram. There are 2 temples houses Upper Ahobilam and Lower Ahobilam. Upper Ahobilam : 1. Ahobila Narasimha - Main temple Upper Ahobilam 2. Kroda Narasimha 3. Malola Narasimha 4. Karanja Narasimha 5. Jwala Narasimha 6. Ugra stambham ( 4 km trekking) Lower Ahobilam : 1. Chatravata Narasimha 2. Yogananda Narasimha 3. Bhargava Narasimha ( Can’t go with our own transport need to hire local jeep ) 4. Pavana Narasimha Swamy ( Can’t go with our own transport need to hire local jeep )

We had visited Ahobilam in dec 2022 and it was a great experience...since we were visiting the places for the first time we took the help of Mr Naresh (mobile number: +91 99511 18495)a local guide..who was very familiar with all the places..he planned our visits to ensure we cover all the nava narashima in one day..he helped us in booking room for our stay..which was very clean..guided us in treking and arranging vehicle for forest ride..he also took us to a Udupi hotel for food..this is only option available in the place for food..which was very good..overall Naresh ensured everything from the time we went to Ahobilam till we left there...i would recommend Naresh for anyone visiting Ahobilam to ensure a smooth darshana of all the temples...

ahobilam tour reviews

We have been to ahobilam on December 2022. Nice place to visit. As we were not familiar with the place and local language, we took help of Mr. Naresh - local guide (Mobile: 09951118495). He was very helpful in arranging things (accommodation, travel, temple visits - including trekking & forest ride, food etc.) from the beginning till the very end of our stay at Ahobilam. We stayed at Narahari guest house and it was very reasonable and good place with all basic facilities. Though not many food options were available at Ahobilam, timely food at Raagavendra Hotel was of very good quality. Places visited during this trip: Mahanandhi, Yaganthi and Ahobilam. We covered these in 2 days. With a pleasent weather during December, the overall trip was a very satisfying & refreshing experience!

Last December 2021 we planned a trip to Ahobilam and it was a great experience. We booked Prathap (phone number : 8639430540) as a guide by searching in the internet after seeing reviews. Prathap is an excellent planner who takes dynamics such as children, old people into consideration while chalking out a plan to visit all 9 temples. Additionally he was very helpful in guiding my aged father by walk while trekking through the arduous mountains. Though it is possible to visit all the temples in 1 day, as we were travelling with my aged father we could not cover everything. Prathap was committed in showing us all the temples and he took us to the remaining the next day. We had a wonderful darshan in ahobilam

Bad Bunny’s Songs of Exile

The Puerto Rican superstar is known for his anthems of community. His latest tour is about his own isolation.

A black-and-white photo of Bad Bunny standing alone onstage in a suit and backward cap

Near the end of Bad Bunny’s 2022 World’s Hottest Tour in Las Vegas, all the lights went out. The Puerto Rican singer and rapper filled the darkness before the song “ El Apagón ” with a six-minute speech in Spanish about what makes his home island bien cabrón —“really fucking awesome.” He highlighted not only Puerto Rico’s beauty but also its resilience in the face of immense challenges: corrupt governance, poor electricity and water access, a hurricane only five years after the devastation of Hurricane María . Although “it is always becoming harder for Puerto Ricans to live on the island,” he said, their strong sense of kinship saves them: “The leaders are the people, who always help one another.”

His speech soon turned into a lament twinged with guilt. “Sometimes I see comments that are like, ‘Where is Bad Bunny?’” he told the stadium. “I’m here, in Las Vegas. This is my job.” The price of fame, he went on to suggest, was a type of exile—work that he cherished but that kept him from the island and people he loved.

Community has long been central to Bad Bunny’s work. The Latin-trap superstar, who has set Spotify streaming records and repeatedly topped the Billboard 200 chart, seldom introduces himself without mentioning where he comes from (accepting the 2022 Video Music Awards Artist of the Year trophy, he declared, “I’m Benito Antonio Martínez, from Puerto Rico to the world!”). He famously resists singing or giving interviews in English. Many of his songs contribute to a long Caribbean musical tradition of rebellion against colonialism . Meanwhile, others form an archive of place; the mountains, rivers, and beaches of Puerto Rico seep into numerous perreo anthems. “This is my beach / This is my sun / This is my land / This is me,” ends the house track “El Apagón,” signaling an understanding of Caribbean people as inextricable from the islands themselves. Bad Bunny’s latest tour and album, however, mark a spiritual departure for the artist, finding him retreating inward to wrestle with cynicism and isolation at the top of the world.

The ongoing Most Wanted Tour, which began in late February, is less of a communal celebration and more of a solo rodeo. I don’t mean this only metaphorically: Midway through the Barclays Center concert I attended this month in Brooklyn, Bad Bunny appeared onstage atop a real, live horse. In the lead-up to this entrance, the stadium darkened as a three-minute video played on-screen, revealing a desert landscape of desolate sepia tones. “They tell me Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights,” the singer growled in Spanish. “I’ve lost count of the years I’ve spent between sand and cactus.” In the video, a masked Bad Bunny, encased in a buckskin jacket, rode a slow-trotting horse into an apocalyptic sunset. “I remain like this,” Bad Bunny said. “Alone.” (At this point, my friend’s 78-year-old Puerto Rican grandmother, whom I attended the concert with, cried out in concern: “We’re here for you, baby!”)

This new lonely-cowboy persona is in line with the artist’s most recent album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , the 22-song trap opera behind this tour. In it, Bad Bunny explores what it means to be the caballo ganadór , or winning horse—at least that’s what he calls himself in the opening track, “Nadie Sabe,” an orchestral rap that samples trampling hooves. In 2022, he was, by several measures, the top artist in the world. Yet he doesn’t seem convinced that the hype is worth the stress. “Everyone wants to be No. 1,” he raps. “If you want it I’ll give it to you, motherfucker.” What fun is being No. 1 when no one can share it with you?

From the get-go, the new tour has approached listeners from a more standoffish posture. “If you’re not a real fan, don’t come,” read the official ads . Instead of energetic house warming up the audience as happened in 2022, this year’s show opened with the longing strings of a classical orchestra. (My friend’s grandmother: “They’re putting me to sleep!”) The ensemble’s rendition of Charles Aznavour’s French ballad “Hier Encore”—which Bad Bunny’s “Monaco” samples—set an early tone for the evening of nostalgia, as if happier days existed largely in the past.

Visually, the Most Wanted Tour was also decidedly placeless, leaning into minimalism and abstraction. At the World’s Hottest Tour show I attended in Las Vegas, the vibe was “beach party”: Bad Bunny appeared in an array of joyful pastels. Dancers in bikinis and denim shorts freestyled under string lights. Visuals showed cartoon dolphins swimming toward island oases. I remember feeling shocked when I left the stadium and stepped into the Mojave Desert’s hot and twisting air. The concert had felt like a portal home to the Dominican Republic, ready to rival JetBlue. I could almost feel the cool shine of the sea melting over my feet.

Yet this time around, tropical maximalism was replaced by nondescript, arid visuals and monochrome Yeezy-style fashions. The dancers, dressed in all-black hoodies or chaps, appeared sparingly. Most often, Bad Bunny was onstage by himself, hopping from one end to another while performing trap bops in burgundy cowboy gear.

For much of the performance, he also sported a Spider-Man-style mask or a studded nun’s habit (à la the Virgin Mary )—a tongue-in-cheek choice for a singer frequently criticized for his lewd lyrics. His hidden face added a layer of distance between him and the audience, seemingly signaling how much access to him we should really get to have. Bad Bunny has rebuked the parasocial aspects of fame, including people’s entitlement to his personal space. Throughout the Nadie Sabe album, he makes several references to a much-reported instance in which, during a vacation in the Dominican Republic, he threw a fan’s phone into some bushes after she photographed him without his consent.

Yet despite the lingering specter of celebrity’s dark side, the show’s final act still managed to conjure a wider sense of connection within the audience. Bad Bunny ended with a slew of his reggaeton hits, old and new, and segued into his song “Tití Me Preguntó” with a roll call of places— asking where, among other groups, his Ecuadorians, Mexicans, Dominicans, and Puerto Ricans were at. With each mention, the stadium erupted into ecstatic screams of recognition. Flags rippled; decibels flared. The rare roar of a crowd of Dominicans, all in one place in the U.S., immediately brought tears to my eyes. Once the song started, we screamed back his lyrics about bringing a roster of girlfriends to his VIP table. We in the audience were there, together. Meanwhile, Bad Bunny looped the stage, alone again.

“Alright!” shouted a clearly excited Chris Robinson last week as the Black Crowes performed on stage in Chicago. “Friday night at the rock and roll show!”

Following last month’s release of their latest studio album Happiness Bastards , their ninth, the Crowes performed Friday night in Chicago at Aragon Ballroom about halfway through the U.S. leg of their current tour, a lengthy jaunt set to take them abroad next month ahead of fall and winter dates in support of Aerosmith’s rescheduled “Peace Out” North American farewell tour.

“When we saw we were coming back to the Aragon, we were very excited,” said Robinson late, noting the group’s first performance in the picturesque room in almost 25 years. “And we’re very excited to have Glyders opening for us. They’re from this town, check them out,” he continued, lauding the work of the Chicago-based, psychedelic garage rock trio (as a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry looked on from the venue’s balcony).

“Cheers, everyone!” said bassist Eliza Weber early. Singer/guitarist Joshua Condon and drummer Joe Seger would soon find a groove during standout tracks like “Geneva Strangemod” and “High Time,” both from their 2023 full-length debut Maria’s Hunt.

Since we were first introduced in 1990, the Crowes have tallied a pair of platinum albums and three gold records, with Happiness Bastards , the group’s first studio album of original material in nearly 15 years, a worthy addition to their unique brand of southern-fried rock and roll.

“There’s a little town about 90 miles south of Atlanta called Macon, Georgia,” Robinson explained Friday night in Chicago, spotlighting the group’s roots. “Little Richard is from Macon. And the Allman Brothers Band,” he began, just one day removed from the death of co-founding Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. “But there’s another: the greatest soul singer of all time, Otis Redding,” he continued. “Well, we jumped on that song and it goes like this,” said Robinson, setting up a late take on one of the biggest Black Crowes hits in Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”

While recent tours celebrated their Shake Your Money Maker record, this one makes the case for the new project, with the Black Crowes performing six songs from it over the course of about 95 minutes on stage Friday in Chicago.

As they do on the album too, “Bedside Manners” and “Rats and Clowns,” two of Happiness Bastards ’ more rollicking moments, kicked things off Friday night.

Performing as an 8 piece group, drummer Cully Symington and keyboard player Erik Deutsch were set beside backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Lesley Grant atop a unique two-tiered stage built to resemble stacks upon stacks of vintage amplifiers and audio equipment.

Frontman Chris Robinson, who performed in front of a large mirror, was joined on stage by guitarists Rich Robinson and Nico Bereciartua as well as longtime bassist Sven Pipien. Festive lighting strung over, along and behind the stage flanked the group who performed under a massive “Happiness Bastards” banner hanging from the lighting rig over the stage.

“Good to see you all. Welcome to the ‘Happiness Bastards!’” said Chris early in Friday’s set. “We’ve got some new songs and we got some old ones - like this!” he said, shuffling left before pointing right at Rich on the slide guitar, ultimately bunnyhopping in reverse back to center stage as “Twice As Hard” rang out early in Chicago.

Robinson was in fine form Friday, a rejuvenated frontman shimmying about while delivering a still impressive lead vocal, with the new music cementing a once unthinkable rebirth for the Black Crowes, who’ve continually staked their claim as one of America’s best rock acts since reforming in 2019.

From 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm , “Nebakanezer” was an early highlight in Chicago. The gnarly dual guitar riffwork of “Horsehead,” from 1999’s By Your Side followed, providing one of Friday’s more rewarding one-two punches.

While “Oh Josephine” slowed things down momentarily, “Thorn in my Pride” found the group beginning to roll, with Chris on harmonica as the Crowes delivered an all hands, Stones-like jam to close the cut.

“Everyone say hello to Rich Robinson,” said Chris, gesturing toward his younger brother. With a wave of his right hand, Rich greeted the rapturuous Chicago crowd, soon strumming in the familiar opening licks to “She talks to Angels” on acoustic guitar.

From the new record, “Flesh Wound” followed, quickly proving to be a late high spot. The saccharine-drenched affair was a blast in the live setting, conjuring up the power pop stylings of Cheap Trick as the Black Crowes soared forward in fun fashion.

The brothers Robinson leaned in close, singing into the same mic during “Jealous Again” before closing with “Remedy,” with Chris back on harp as the new “Kindred Friend” wrapped things up in the Windy City.

“What is a band, other than something you dream up?” asked Chris rhetorically on stage in Chicago. “This band started in our mom and dad’s house in the 80s,” he continued, noting the pair’s humble roots. “And that dream will continue on.”

Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse strike heart of gold at tour-opening San Diego concert

Neil Young performing at SDSU on April 24, 2024.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Willie Nelson performs at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Review: Willie Nelson’s San Diego concert defined, not defied, the passing of time. He turns 91 on April 29.

The American music-master and his band warmed up a damp, cool evening at The Shell. David Sanger, the drummer in opening act Asleep At The Wheel, took the ferry back to his family’s home in Coronado after the show.

April 23, 2024

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Wednesday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

SAN DIEGO, CA - JULY 11: Neil Young performs at the Rady Shell on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. (K.C. Alfred / The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Review: Neil Young delivered singular San Diego solo concert by digging deep for new/old musical gold

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed his first San Diego solo concert in 31 years, mixing classics with deep, deep album cuts

July 12, 2023

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next% 2 Golf Shoe Review

M y Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next% 2 golf shoes arrived the day before I was due to play a 72 hole event over a weekend and while I would never normally put new shoes into action for such a lengthy event, these shoes felt so unbelievably comfortable when I first slipped them on I was confident they would be up to the challenge.

I have fairly wide feet and had previously identified Nike golf shoes as being more on the narrow side, causing some issues with rubbing and foot pain. I was delighted to discover this was not the case and while there may be wider fitting shoes on the market, these were perfectly comfortable out on the course.

I felt as though I was already on to a winner with the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next% 2 golf shoes as not only would I class them as some of the most comfortable golf shoes , I would say they look outstanding. The colourway I tried is a little bold, I admit, but there is the option of a classic white and black for those looking to be more discreet. I really feel as though the green, blue and pink tinge on these shoes help it stand out, not only highlighting some of the really impressive technical features but also attracting plenty of compliments over the weekend from playing partners and spectators alike. The sporty style may not be to everyone's taste but I honestly felt a little more athletic in these shoes just because of how they look and felt, although this was probably helped by the fact they are worn by one of my favorite players in Brooks Koepka .

While the previous model of this golf shoe was highly rated and deemed one of the best golf shoes on the market, I really feel as though Nike has made some big improvements from a performance standpoint. It has integrated additional spikes in the forefoot, raising the total of spikes to six, which is two more than the previous design. This provided excellent traction while walking and swinging from different lies.

The Air Zoom unit offers exceptional comfort and a cloud-like feeling under your foot, solidifying its position as some of the best golf shoes for walking . This was enhanced by the cushioned insole and updated midsole foam, which not only provided comfort but good levels of stability when hitting from uneven lies on the course.

The Flyweave material of the upper is comfortable and also offers protection from the elements as you receive a two-year waterproof warranty with these golf shoes. While this may not be as necessary if you’re lucky enough to live in a warmer climate, this is essential for those that experience harsher winters and these shoes really will rival the performance of any of the best winter golf shoes .

This particular pair dealt with 72 holes fresh out of the box admirably and felt as comfortable as though they were designed to run marathons. This is the most complete golf shoe I have worn in a while and so I thoroughly enjoyed wearing them. Retailing at $170/£159, I believe the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next% 2 golf shoe offers great value for money and provides you with everything you need out of an all-year round golf shoe.
