Independent, free-for-all coverage of New Jersey culture
Folk artist Al Olender on the stories in her debut album—and the thrill of releasing it
Legend has it that bad things are supposed to happen on Friday the 13th. Don’t tell Hudson Valley based folk artist Al Olender, who, on May 13, released her debut record, Easy Crier .
“Record release day was the best day of my life,” says Olender on the phone from Cambridge, Massachusetts. “We played a record release show and all my community came out and it was sold out. I have never played a sold out solo show before, and my mom from Maryland showed up.”
Olender is soaking in the experience of her album being released and touring for it. She comes to Jersey on May 22 with a show at the Saint in Asbury Park, and on June 29 with a free show at the McLaughlin Norcross Memorial Dell in Haddon Heights.
The recording process for Easy Crier was unique, as it was recorded at a church turned into a recording studio run by James Felice (of the Felice Brothers) in Upstate New York.
“It was a fun experience.” says Olender. “It was very fun and enjoyable to record these songs. In order to create good art as a musician we have to feel a level of safety and comfort. I felt that safety in the church and I didn’t take anything for granted. I felt so grateful that I was allowed to be in a safe space with these musicians recording these songs.”
The safe spaces of the church allowed Olender to explore darker topics like the death of her brother, Keith, which she sings about in the song named after him.
“It’s surreal that I get to talk about my brother, which is an interesting topic because he’s dead,” says Olender. “Which is so wild and surreal to say out loud. It’s so stark to say stuff like, ‘They aren’t alive anymore,’ but it’s important for me to say these words out loud, which is why I wrote the song. He has been dead for 10 years this month, and that song came to me by thinking of all the stories I have with him. It’s really amazing that people we care about the most, when they pass, we want to keep their stories completely hidden, but there are days where I think my brother was so cool, interesting, funny and did such stupid things and I love him so much. He was the most important person to me for 20 years of my life.”
One of Olender’s most vivid memories of Keith is mentioned in the song with a line that goes, “She crashed into the car and we just ran, So I called you first and you said you’d take the blame.”
“I was fifteen, and in my best friend’s car we weren’t supposed to be and we went to a party,” remembers Olender. “She was driving her mom’s car and we got into a fender bender. I called my brother Keith and I was crying and I was like, ‘Mom is gonna kill me,’ and he said, ‘If you can run to my friend’s house nearby I’ll take care of everything including the car, and I will make sure mom doesn’t find out about this.’ I was crying and running to this dude’s house. That’s the type of guy my brother was, and he stood up for me and my friend. It was a special moment that had this big brother energy of ‘I got it.’”
Olender also sings about the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in “All I Do is Watch TV.” Olender sings about the stage of the pandemic where everyone watched Tiger King and got stimulus checks. Despite being amused by Joe Exotic, it was also a time when Olender questioned whether she would ever play music again.
“I was like, what the fuck am I doing with my days,” says Olender. “I wrote the song during the deep Tiger King stage of the pandemic. I was like will I ever play music again? I watched so much TV from my big comfy couch. It was such a sad time with so much grief and loss, but also I’m watching a lot of TV. So let’s make a song that is sort of lighthearted and sort of sad.”
Easy Crier , a song that shares a name with the album, is about Olender’s love of the Big Apple.
“NYC is the love of my life,” says Olender. “I know it’s a trope and cliché to say ‘New York City is the greatest city in the world,’ but it really is the best city. Every time I meet someone from New York I get so starstruck. The song was written when I was in my favorite city with my best friend for my birthday. We stayed in this fancy ass hotel, and we don’t normally do that or have the money for that, but we wanted to have an evening and we did. I couldn’t believe I had this night with my best friend.”
Olender will sing about her life stories on May 22 at the Saint in Asbury Park, and June 29 in Camden County. So far, she’s been really happy about the tour and getting to share her album.
“Tour has been amazing so far, the shows don’t feel perfect but that’s fine,” says Olender. “I’m a human being that sings and plays guitar by myself. So there’s gonna be nights where I ate too many french fries and ate too much salmon and feel bloated on stage. But that’s who I am and I am a human being. When I get on the stage I am so happy, and I’m grateful that James Felice is on this tour with me.”
Even though the ocean might be a little too cold for Olender to go in before her Asbury show, she’s still looking forward to coming to the Garden State.
“I love Jersey, and everyone from Jersey is super nice,” says Olender. “I love the authenticity of Jersey, and I love Asbury Park. Being by the beach is really nourishing for me, and it reminds me of Ocean City, Maryland, where I would go on vacations growing up. Jersey feels very close to home for me.”
Al Olender will be playing at the Saint on May 22 along with James Felice. Ticket information can be found here .
On June 29, she will be playing at the McLaughlin Norcross Memorial Dell in Haddon Heights along with Graduation Speech. More information can be found here.

Al Olender Kingston, New York
There’s nothing scarier than being honest with yourself. For singer/songwriter Al Olender, facing her fear of the truth has been a cleansing, often cathartic process that’s led to the kind of revelations she had previously thought unobtainable. On her debut full-length album Easy Crier, the Upstate New York based artist asks: what happens if we vow to never tell a lie, ever again? ... more

Live Review: The Felice Brothers w/ Al Olender @ DC9 — 10/14/21
Hailing from upstate New York’s Hudson River Valley, The Felice Brothers began in the mid-2000s as the musical project of brothers Ian, James, and Simone Felice. They began their career as buskers, and have referred to themselves (who knows how jokingly) as “scumbags.”
Their career got a boost from another area resident, legendary Band drummer and vocalist Levon Helm, who invited them to perform at one of his Midnight Rambles in Woodstock. It’s fitting that the Brothers got a break from him, as their music owes obvious debts to The Band and Bob Dylan, in its mix of humor, surrealistic imagery, and ironic gloss on classic Americana. Their early recordings were rough — one was made in a chicken coop — but have grown more refined over the course of their career. As they toured with acts ranging from Justin Townes Earle to Old Crow Medicine Show to the Dave Matthews Band, the Brothers became more sophisticated artists.
That sophistication was on display in their unique brand of folk country-rock/ Americana in a packed house at DC9 recently.
Ian (guitar, lead vocals) and James (accordion, keyboards) were joined by Jesske Hume (bass) and Will Lawrence (drums) for 2019’s Undress , and they remain the current configuration of the band after the departure of Simone. The Felice Brothers released their latest record, the excellent From Dreams to Dust , last month on the indie label Yep Rec. While their sound is earthy, it is hardly rustic or old-fashioned, and their lyrics are thoroughly modern.
Take the song that they opened their set, “Jazz on the Autobahn,” which also kicks off the new record, on Oct. 14. The song combines elements of traditional Americana — sheriffs, classic sports cars — with an apocalyptic scene and imagery that borders on the surreal. The surrealism is turned up to 11 on Silverfish; lines like “Garden ants the size of graduates” drew peels of laughter from the crowd.
By contrast, another cut from the album, “Inferno,” explores how strange and arbitrary the things that we remember are. The song takes its title from the 1999 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and the song proceeds to name-check the late Kurt Cobain, as well. The movies also show up in “Valium,” which is, in some ways, the archetype of a certain-type of postmodern America. The song explores the soporific effect of how the American West was mythologized in Western movies. Where a classic country would call back to the Old West, The Felice Brothers are interested in a representation of that classic slice of Americana.
The most abstract song on From Dreams to Dust is probably “All The Way Down.” I will confess that I don’t really what understand what “the union / Of an ape in an apron / And a break in the clouds” means, but it’s a compelling line. It’s pure poetry, and it completely works on that level.
Stream from Dreams to Dust by The Felice Brothers on Spotify:
I find “Money Talks” the most harrowing song on the album. The song opens in the middle of a job interview, with the line, “Can you walk me through these gaps in your resume?” This may not be as apocalyptic or eye-popping as some of their other lyrics, but it hits me right where I live. (There’s something to the idea that horror isn’t nearly as frightening as real life. You’re never going to be chased by a monster, whereas a job interview can affect your survival.) “Blow Him Apart” is similarly grounded in real, everyday experience. The protagonist declares, “My rent situation’s officially scary.” The simple admission, “I talk shit / When I’m afraid” gets right to the heart of how we put on masks and layers of defense mechanism.
Ian didn’t say much during their set, but he did express his gratitude for a “beautiful, respectful audience.” DC9 is a tight space, the kind of place where noise or misbehavior would really disrupt the performance and the whole audience; the fans who gathered on Thursday evening were all about the music, and it made for a great experience.
Ian’s other comment concerned his choice of beverage, grapefruit hard seltzer. The singer and the audience shared a chuckle at this, as it’s the sort of drink that’s often seen as silly or frivolous. As you might expect from his lyrical leanings, Ian completely owns a sense of his own ridiculousness.
The bulk of the evening’s material came from their latest record, but the Brothers threw in a good assortment of favorites from their back catalog. “The Kid,” from 2019’s Undress , is an outlaw tale, but it’s an outlaw tale that’s as much about how we care for others as it is about the outlaw’s misdeeds. “Days of the Years,” which they played in their “encore” (they did not leave the stage, but rather announced that they were now playing their encore), is a slice-of-life story that may or may not be autobiographical.
“Jack at the Asylum” and “Plunder,” which came at the front and back ends of their sets, appeared on 2016’s Life In The Dark . As did “Triumph ’73,” a motorcycle tale that is reminiscent, in some ways, of the road-themed songs of Bruce Springsteen. “Plunder” in particular has the character of a good-time, late-night campfire jam. “Cherry Licorice” is off of 2014’s Favorite Waitress. “ Lincoon Contintental,” from 2012’s God Bless You, Amigo , is the rambling sort of tale you might associate with vintage Bob Dylan or the Band, as is “Wonderful Life,” from Mix Tape . Ian’s frequent allusions to pop culture can be seen in “Wonderful Life,” which appeared on the band’s self-titled 2008 release.
On Oct. 14, the show opened with singer-songwriter Al Olander, a Baltimore resident. For a few songs, James Felice joined her on accordion, and she got the crowd singing along to a cover of Tom Petty’s “Yer So Bad.” Al showed a lot of charm, and the audience gave her a great reception, remaining quiet and attentive for her set.
In a way, what makes The Felice Brothers music classic is its total embrace of modernism, even post-modernism. The template for this sort of Americana was laid down by Dylan in the ’60s. While classic country might refer directly to these old aspects of American culture, The Felice Brothers instead comment on their absurdity and their dark side. It makes for gripping music, full of visceral, mind-blowing images, and the lyrics often work as pure poetry. It’s not hard to see this once rough and tumble band has developed a devoted following. Their songs are just that good, and they demand your attention.

ALBUM REVIEW: ‘EASY CRIER’ BY AL OLENDER
When you think of an album about grief, you’re probably imagining something somber and haunting. Upstate NY singer-songwriter Al Olender knows grief isn’t nearly that simple, or that linear.
Olender’s debut full-length album, Easy Crier , was released today May 13th.
The album opens with “All I Do Is Watch TV,” somewhat spritely in tone, laying the framework for the spirit of the songs to come. “All I need is 80 summers to get my shit together,” Olender muses amid scenes of 2am true crime binges and buying drinks just to watch them spill. There’s a combination of numbness and detachment that reflects the experiences of early grief.
The second track is named after the album’s subject: “Keith.” Olender’s late brother. This sudden loss is the catalyst for these songs, and in their cultivation Olender dives into vulnerability with her heart set on honest reflection. The presence of strong acoustic strums and powerful drums capture a sense of inner-chaos and heartbreak as Olender’s vocals escalate into a gentle frenzy. She then folds into herself in “Liar, Liar” as she opens herself up to memory and shifts her gaze onto her own pain.
Based in Kingston, New York, Olender is setting out on her first solo tour with this debut, kicking off in the Hudson Valley before traveling through New England and down to Georgia. With each night her songs will undoubtedly touch the heart of anyone who has experienced loss. Collectively, they are a tender rumination on the complexity of grief – the joy of memory, the pain of loneliness, and the necessity of self-actualization.
Easy Crier was recorded at The Church in Harlemville, New York, with producer-engineer James Felice of the Felice Brothers . Musical contributions come from Felice on accordion and piano, Jesske Hume on bass and synths, William Lawrence on drums and guitar, Ian Felice on guitar, and Alejandro Leon on bass. One of the many highlights of the album is Olender’s vocal surety. This may be her first album, but her vocals bring a confidence that denotes a veteran. It is, perhaps, in large part the result of her unflinching commitment to her own honesty.
Relatable in its quirks and in its sincerity, the album grows through various phases of self-observation, reverie, and even celebration before rounding itself out. With lines like “show me how to dance until my heart goes numb” and “close your eyes, let’s fall in love,” “The Age” sounds like a joyful burst of youthful adventure. The following track, the album’s last, is the quiet and tender-hearted “Mean” in which Olender laments, “I’m older than my older brother and I’m growing up alone.”
Indeed, grief is not linear, and neither is this album. While Olender refuses to gloss over the harrowing sadness of her experience, neither does she dwell in murky melancholy any longer than to honor and bear witness to hear feelings. What results is an album that will undoubtedly serve as a companion to anyone who has experienced loss. Empathetically and with musical aplomb, Olender’s Easy Crier will comfort those on a journey of owning their experiences and getting to know their innermost selves, through the joy, the pain, and inevitably through the tears.

Al Olender to Play Annual Kingston Concert
By Peter Aaron
Kingston singer-songwriter Al Olender will return to the Old Dutch Church on February 9 with her second annual Alentine’s Day winter concert. “Holiday times are hard for me (maybe for you too?),” Olender says about the incentive for the yearly Valentine’s Day-inspired event. “Grief slams the door in my face and says I’m not allowed to enjoy the warmth of celebration, but even my mom can attest, this holiday is an open door to the heartbroken and in love and lost and found.”
Besides this being her second show at the landmark church in the Stockade district, Olender’s music is linked to another area house of worship. Easy Crier , her 2022 debut, which was produced and engineered by James Felice of the Felice Brothers was recorded at the Church studio in Harlemville (the album also features Ian Felice of Felice Brothers). Prior to becoming a touring solo artist, Olender performed in the popular Hudson Valley-born band Upstate. “It’s a love letter to everything I’ve lost,” she says about Easy Crier . “And forms a real insight into how telling the truth has only changed my life.”
The Alentine’s Day concert featuring Al Olendar and special guests will take place at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston on February 9 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show.

Review: THE GIPSY KINGS at The San Diego Symphony's Rady Shell
Flamenco Excites a Soldout Audience
The only empty seats at the Rady Shell's high-energy Gipsy Kings concert were the hundreds unoccupied while their associated booties were swaying in the aisles below waving arms. Nicolas Reyes sang " Quiero Saber" to begin the bass-heavy, multi-guitar rhythmic onslaught. His hoarse and passionate voice has made him one of the world’s most popular flamenco singers.
Al Olender was an unusual choice for the Gypsy Kings' opening act. A near opposite in performing style and uninfluenced by flamenco, she sang while accompanying herself on guitar with accordionist James Felice joining in on half the tunes. The self-effacing Olender, amidst an endearing stream of humorous patter, described herself as a “hotdog-stand singer” and in awe of playing in front of a crowd of thousands when her usual venue is a dive bar.
She sang a combination of covers and her own songs. The tune that most pleased the
audience was “Blue Bayou,” a hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1977, coincidently the year the main act was founded. Olender encouraged a singalong and asked the many boats in attendance on the water at both sides of the audience to hit their horns with the lyric “On Blue Bayou where those fishing boats with their sails afloat.” A practice invocation began with horns mute. Then further urging brought a cacophony of sounds that had everyone laughing, including Olender. But she became a little concerned, accompanied by more laughter, when the blaring temporarily prevented her from singing.
It would take a doctoral candidate’s thesis to unravel the full history of The Gipsy Kings and the dozen or more relatives who have sung in the group at various times. Some have left to form their own bands using the same name. But the original was formed in 1977 by flamenco singer Jose Reyes with sons including Nicolas. Dad gave it the not-so-catchy name Jose Reyes and Los Reyes. The name changed to The Gipsy Kings a few years later, shortly after the senior Reyes passed away and Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo, a relative, became co-leaders. Nicolas is “lead artist” and vocalist for the band's current two-year tour.
In 1987 fame came with the third album under the new name. It included the songs "Djobi Djoba", "Bamboléo", and "Un Amor." Those, and other songs from that album, which spent 40 weeks on U.S. charts, made up a third of the concert. The crowd responded to all of them, often singing along in Spanish. But the singalong was the loudest with the group’s slightly more recent hit version of “Volare.”
The Gipsy Kings have succeeded with a radically new approach to flamenco. They incorporated additional rhythms, most notably rumba and samba and, in the current band, the traditional single acoustic guitar accompaniment has become seven electric guitars, including base. When all are strumming frantically infectious flamenco style, it produces a unique wall of sound that is particularly effective with the Rady Shell’s terrific sound system and outdoor setting. The occasional ambient sounds from boats, helicopters or hip-hop bands that can mar a symphony performance didn’t have a chance.
Nino Baliardo took four or five breathtakingly fast solos in a jazz-influenced flamenco style that were concert highlights. In addition to Nicolas, and Nino the band includes guitarists Jospeh Gautier, Patrick Baptiste and Nicolas’s sons Yohan and Georges Reyes. To round out the ensemble it was Bernard Paganotti, bass guitar, Juan Abardonado, keyboards, Quentin Boursy, drums and Pacheco Jimenez, percussion.
Although The Gipsy Kings barely stopped for breath in an hour and a half with 16 tunes, the crowd demanded two more before arms were exhausted from waving and applauding as the musicians finally began leaving the stage to end an exceptionally entertaining show.

Kingston’s Old Dutch Church to host Al Olender “Alentines Day” Show on Feb. 4
Singer/Songwriter Al Olender has announced a one-off Valentines themed show at Old Dutch Church in Kingston on February 4th.
The show, dubbed “Alentines Day”, will be a “cathartic taking back of Valentines Day for everyone” says Olender. Special Guests will join her in performing new songs and old favorites off her debut album Easy Crier . The show is also dedicated to the city of Kingston itself, culminating in an intimate dream performance for Olender.
“This show is for the broken-hearted, the new relationship energy you don’t know where to put, the crushes you’ve had and have and maybe will meet at this show.”
Al And Easy Crier
On her debut full-length album Easy Crier , Olender asks: what happens if we vow to never tell a lie, ever again? On Easy Crier , Olender pieces together her most vulnerable moments to produce a celebratory and beautiful rumination on grief, and reminds us of the power that comes in really getting to know yourself.
Recorded at The Church in Harlemville, NY, the album sees delicate keys dance alongside acoustic plucks, brooding strings and lush harmonies. There are moments of exploring the often fine line between funny and sad that makes Easy Crier a portal for relief. It’s an album that takes each shattered, heartbroken piece and puts them back together to form a strangely beautiful mosaic.

Alabama Tap Old Dominion, Shenandoah, Montgomery Gentry for June Jam XVIII
By Jon Blistein
Jon Blistein
Country-rock stalwarts Alabama have enlisted Old Dominion , Shenandoah, and more for June Jam XVIII, taking place June 1 at the VFW Fairgrounds in Fort Payne, Alabama.
Alabama will close out the day, which will also feature performances from Lee Greenwood, Montgomery Gentry (featuring Eddie Montgomery), Mark Willis, Exile, John Berry, Taylor Hicks, the Malpass Brothers, and the Castellows. A special surprise guest — described only as a “hitmaking singer-songwriter” in a press release — will take the stage, too, though obviously no further details were given.
The June Jam Festival returned last year after a 26-year hiatus. Alabama launched the charity event in their hometown of Fort Payne back in 1982, and it ran continuously through 1997. Over the years, the festival has raised more than $20 million for the June Jam Foundation; this year, donations will benefit those in need and disaster relief efforts in and around Alabama.

“When we started the first June Jam in 1982 as a charity concert event, it was attended by over 30,000 fans,” Teddy Gentry added. “At the time, it was the largest country music festival in the United States. Now we are getting ready for our 18th concert. We want to welcome everyone to Fort Payne, Alabama, our hometown. Come have a great time and help others in need!”
While the June Jam concert is the main event, there are a whole lot of other festivities scheduled in the lead up to the festival. The Miss June Jam Pageant will take place May 4; the Alabama June Jam Parade will be held May 29; Gentry will host a talent show on May 30; and Alabama will anchor a “songwriters showcase” on May 31 with Lee Thomas Miller, Brice Long, and a surprise guest. A fractured larynx and vocal cord damage are no joke for a hard-rock singer to recover from. Especially a 76-year-old frontman with a still-big voice, like Steven Tyler .
Nearly a year after Aerosmith put the brakes on a long-gestating farewell tour just a few shows in after Tyler injured his voice during a Sept. 9, 2023 show at a New York arena, the band’s about to be, ahem, back in the saddle.
The “Peace Out Tour” will resume September 20 in Pittsburgh. The 40-date arena tour runs through February 26 in Buffalo and includes a New Year’s Eve show in the band’s hometown of Boston. Complete list of tour dates at aerosmith.com .
Aerosmith’s decades of hits include “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Crazy” and “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”
The band features Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton.
Unlike many classic rock groups, Aerosmith’s original lineup remained intact through most of their history. However in recent years, original drummer Joey Kramer has been replaced onstage by John Douglas, Kramer’s former drum tech. Buck Johnson , an Alabama native who also tours with Brother Cane and Hollywood Vampires, is Aerosmith’s touring keyboardist/backing vocalist .
Blues-rockers The Black Crowes , known for ‘90s hits like “Jealous Again” and “Remedy,” are the support act for all dates of Aerosmith’s “Peace Out Tour.”
The Black Crowes previously opened for Aerosmith on the Crowes’ first-ever big tour, back in 1990. Led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson , on vocals and guitar, respectively, Black Crowes recently released “Happiness Bastards,” their first album of all-original songs in 15 years .
Aerosmith’s classic albums include their 1973 self-titled debut, 1975′s “Toys in the Attic,” 1976 release “Rocks,” 1987 comeback LP “Permanent Vacation” and ‘93 mega-seller “Get a Grip.” Aerosmith’s most recent album was “Music from Another Dimension” from 2012.
