Lisbon, the capital of Portugal is a dazzling city stretching along the Tagus River, a cosmopolitan destination forever linked with the sea. The Beira Alta region of Portugal is picturesque and diverse. Unfortunately, bike companies refuse to standardize bike saddles so there is no solution for clients traveling too far to bring a saddle. Route: appreciate the tremendous work on routing . . . but it appeared as fair-weather routing. Spring rains turned many (most) miles of hard-packed dirt (with a bit of gravel) into mud, hectares of mud. (And in the water/mud, one cannot see the potholes.) We made a few ride-arounds after bogging down too often in the seasonal mud. We also rode around the silly segment to 'walk the bikes on the sand'. Recommend Eurobike recommend one free and one pay mapping routing service to clients to use with the GPX provided. Lodging: Strongly prefer lodging on the route and with local flavor vs corporate (holiday vs business traveler). Lagos - Hotel Tavoli had ants in the bathroom. Lodging at Albefera, Cerro da Marina was excessively off the route and in a heavily residential area. Luggage transfer: perfect.

Stunning views every day and a very engaging and dedicated tour leader made this my favourite Explore trip yet. Plenty of much desired solitude on the walks - too often I find them crowded with other groups. Grading was accurate, the walks were never near exhausting. Breakfasts at the hotel were not suitable for a day of walking, but the variety and quality of food available nearby for dinners was excellent. Not enough positive things can be said about our guide, Carol. She is new but one would never know had she not said so...and a natural for the job.

Explorer: Cycling the Algarve (from Castro Marim to Lagos)

The Tour Leaders were phenomenal. Accommodations were very good and the breakfasts could not be beat. Luis and Artur were attentive, knowledgeable, interesting, good listeners, and a lot of fun. Luis even taught us a European card game that some of us enjoyed playing with him for multiple nights. We missed them both a great deal as we continued our Portugal stay for another two weeks after the tour. The Algarve trip was one of just two Explorer trips offered by Experience Plus. Although still somewhat experimental, we would sign up for more if offered in the future. "Explorer" means we were routed to backroads, country lanes, gravel paths and the like as much as possible. There was no better way to take in the pink flamingos, storks, the fruit of komquat, lemon, and orange trees, the process of olive harvesting, the ingenuity of the cork harvesting, the beaches, boardwalks, cafes, and touring ancient Roman ruins. The bikes were perfectly suited for this type of travel -- sized well and with wider tires. Our friend wanted to switch tires and the guides readily accommodated him. I brought my own pedals and the guides dutifully installed and removed without me even requesting. The GPS system was amazing in keeping us on the right track. We enjoyed the sights and local fruit hanging over the side of the fences along the road. Portugal is very lush in parts and the beaches are vast in other parts along the way. We recommended this tour to friends who came with us and they loved it also. My only minor concern is the food was so delicious and plentiful that we could not eat it all!

Our guide didn't have much knowledge about the area. Apart from telling us where we were going each day, we weren't told about history of the area or anything?? What made the tour great was the people we walked with.

The Algarve Tours, Vacations & Travel Packages

The Algarve is an all-year-round destination offering a mild climate and lots of sunshine on a Portugal vacation. Located in the southern part of Portugal on the Mediterranean Sea, it is known for its safe and attractive beaches. It is an extensive region stretching along a beautiful coastline. There are many resorts to choose from, many of which started out as fishing towns. The type of resort required depends on your style and tastes as they vary from very lively to sedate. The coast becomes progressively wilder as you head west with wild beaches ideal for surfing. The eastern coast between Faro and the Spanish border is very different. The resorts here have a stronger Portuguese flavour than those in the central part of the Algarve. Inland Algarve offers pretty castle towns and historic villages and flower-covered hillsides. The Algarve Way hiking trail has footpaths and cycle routes.

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and the site of the only major airport. It is an attractive city with mosaic-paved pedestrianized streets and waterside gardens. There are some excellent local beaches not too far from the centre to be enjoyed on a Portugal tour. The pretty Cidade Velha (Old Town) lies behind a series of defensive walls. Faro is situated on the edge of the Ria Formosa National Park, a series of saltwater lagoons and mudflats that are home to many migratory birds and wildlife. The city has a number of historic monuments and buildings and the shopping area is lined with open-air cafes and shops.

Albufeira is probably the most lively and touristy of all the Algarve resorts. Once a scenic fishing village, it is now totally devoted to tourism. The tourist areas are divided into two main areas, Areias de Sao Joao, which is full of bars, restaurants and open-air discos and the Old Town, which is situated on the seafront, again with a large choice of restaurants and bars.  

The centre of Lagos is surrounded by 16 th Century walls within which are pretty cobblestone lanes and picturesque squares and churches. The town has everything from nearby beaches to nightlife. Close to Lagos, there are water parks and zoos and challenging hiking trails. East of Lagos is the 4 kilometre/2.5 mile long Meia Praia Beach, the longest sandy beach on the western side of the Algarve. Surrounding Lagos are many interesting towns which can be visited for the day on a Portugal vacation. 

Sagres, overlooking some of the Algarve’s most dramatic scenery on a Portugal tour, is a small, quiet village with sea-carved cliffs dropping down to the sea. It has a laid-back atmosphere with some pleasant cafes and bars. The port is a centre for boat building and lobster fishing. It is still relatively untouristy and is an attractive town of mainly low-rise houses lining the quiet streets. It has beautiful beaches and a picturesque harbour. 

Portimao is the second-most-populated city in the Algarve. The centre is small with a pleasant and attractive waterfront featuring outdoor cafes and fish restaurants. In the centre are pleasant pedestrian shopping streets, historic buildings and a selection of cafes, bars, and restaurants. Portimao has a relaxed atmosphere, far removed from some of the more lively resorts on Portugal trips.  

Silves is an attractive inland town, typically traditionally Portuguese located on the banks of the River Arade. It was the capital of the region between 700 and 1200 AD during the rule of the Moors. Remnants from this era can be found including one of the best-preserved castles in the Algarve with its dramatic ring of red walls. There is history everywhere you look in Silves. It has a very pretty central square with palm trees and flowers, beautiful gardens and a paved riverfront. There are numerous cafés offering lovely river views. Within the town, there are cobbled streets, cafés and shops to be enjoyed on Portugal vacations.

Praia da Rocha

The lively Praia da Rocha has one of the Algarve's best beaches with a backdrop of red cliffs. It was once an elegant town and this can be seen from the 19 th Century mansions, most of which are now atmospheric guest houses. There is a casino which is perched on a cliff top and an old sea fort, the 17 th Century Fortaleza da Santa Catarina, the terrace of which offers splendid views of the ocean in one direction and over a modern marina the other way.

Armacao de Pera

On trips to Portugal, Armacao de Pera has one of the largest beaches in the Algarve. The remains of the town’s fortified walls are at the eastern end of the resort. The cobblestone street opposite the fort leads down into a network of little streets with a selection of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. There are a number of restaurants and cafes along the pretty seafront, some offering very fresh fish caught by local fishermen. 

Vilamoura is one of the Algarve’s nicest resort towns offering more than just beaches. It is a stylish and exclusive beach resort and golfing centre. There is a trendy marina with fine restaurants, stylish cocktail bars and chic nightlife. From here, it is only a short stroll to the excellent pristine beaches. Vilamoura attracts the super-rich who moor their expensive yachts in the marina. There are world-class hotels to choose from. The beaches are beautiful, with soft golden sands and crystal clear sea waters, safe for families. Although Vilamoura has a reputation for exclusivity, it is only marginally more expensive than many of the other resorts in the Algarve on a Portugal vacation.

With an ideal climate for Portugal vacations that lets you play throughout the year and a wide variety of almost 50 courses to choose from, the Algarve is a golfers’ paradise. Most courses have stunning views. They are internationally recognized for the quality of their facilities and have been designed by prestigious players such as Sir Henry Cotton and Arnold Palmer.  Between Lagos and Sagres, there are courses with varying degrees of difficulty. This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches

Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.

Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.

A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential. 

The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.

"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."

The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport. 

Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm. 

Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .

And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.
