Junipero Beach Junipero Beach free

While there are miles of shoreline in the Long Beach area, not all beaches are made equal. There's Alamitos, which is easily accessed from the downtown area and close to hotels. There's Rosie's Dog Beach, which is a great place to bring your furry friends. However, a crowd favorite is Junipero Beach – also called Cherry Beach – which stretches along the Bluff Park area.

This strip of coastline begins where Alamitos Beach ends. At Junipero, the high rises that back Alamitos are replaced with the more residential communities of Bluff Park. Here, the sand is soft and waves are calm, making it an ideal place for families. Because the sand area is wide, there's plenty of space for visitors to spread out and you're sure to get a solid spot. The beach has many convenient amenities, such as showers, lifeguards on duty during peak months and bike paths. This is also one of the only areas in Bluff Park with handicap accessible beach entrance. Many people enjoy participating in the free yoga classes that take place on Junipero as well.

The Queen Mary The Queen Mary

One of the most popular attractions in Long Beach is the Queen Mary, a retired British cruise ship that operated numerous transatlantic voyages throughout the early 1900s. Once known for its classy atmosphere and high profile guests like Winston Churchill, the ship is now frequented by travelers looking to learn about its history and get a glimpse into the luxury of the past.

Aboard the ship, travelers can take guided tours and explore different themed exhibits. There are different tours to choose from, including a Steam and Steel tour that brings you deep into the bowels of the ship to the boiler rooms and generators. Exhibits include the Shipyard and the Ship Model Gallery, where you can admire replicas of the Queen Mary in its prime. For those exploring independently, there's a scavenger hunt to follow. There are also nighttime dining experiences, in addition to more unique activities, such as illusion performances and paranormal walks through the supposedly haunted parts of the ship. Previous travelers highly recommended the Haunted Encounters tour but warn it may run a bit longer than other tours.

East Village Arts District East Village Arts District free

While most trips to Long Beach center on beach adventures and waterfront dining, the East Village Arts District gives the city a cultural edge that's worth exploring. This district is chock full of diverse home designs, eclectic eateries, vintage clothing stores and art galleries. Some of the most popular galleries include Hellada Gallery, The Liberty and C Gallery Fine Art, but there are plenty of others to explore as well.

Many businesses are built into restored buildings, which gives the area a historic yet funky vibe. Murals and mosaics will brighten up your walk as you explore the streets. Previous visitors said the district is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee and pick up unique pieces from boutique stores. They enjoyed the lack of chain stores but do advise others to pay attention to store hours before planning a shopping trip as many have limited hours.

Here, you'll find both permanent and revolving exhibits featuring Pacific artists. There are sometimes living arts exhibits that include traditional dance and musical performances among other shows. The museum also holds educational programs for visitors to learn about the culture of the people living in the Pacific islands.

The exterior of the PIEAM resembles a traditional island house. There is an outdoor garden area at the museum that holds a koi pond and some artifacts collected by the museum's creator as well. Previous visitors heaped praise on the well-rounded representation of Pacific Islanders and enjoyed the museum because of its niche subject. 

Aquarium of the Pacific Aquarium of the Pacific

This large aquarium features more than 100 exhibits, the most popular of which include the sea otter and penguin habitats. An outdoor shark lagoon showcasing more than 150 sharks is also a visitor favorite. There are many educational events and presentations every month for visitors both young and old. 

The numerous hands-on exhibits help set the Aquarium of the Pacific apart from other aquariums you may have visited in the past. There are typical tide pool touch tanks where children can discover the feeling and texture of different sea creatures. This aquarium takes hands-on learning even further by offering the chance to touch larger animals like sharks and rays. Previous visitors said their children especially enjoyed this learning experience.

Museum of Latin American Art Museum of Latin American Art

Housed in a striking building designed by the Mexican artist Manuel Rosen, the Museum of Latin American Art helps visitors appreciate Latino art before they even set foot inside. Created in 1996, the museum is the only one in the country dedicated to modern and contemporary Latino art.

Inside, the museum displays a series of more than 1,600 permanent pieces as well as a wide range of rotating exhibits. Previous MOLAA exhibitions include works by Robert Graham, Osmeivy Ortega Nuna Mangiante and Judithe Hernández. The museum also includes a sculpture and event garden featuring more than 30 pieces representing artists from almost every Latin American country. Long Beach enjoys welcoming weather throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Long Beach is the extended summer season, including June, July, August, September, and October. This long season offers warm water and consistently warm weather, with temperatures averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit.

The months leading up to summer, including April and May, are also lovely times to visit. Sunny skies also define this time of year, with temperatures averaging a bit lower in the mid-70s Fahrenheit. This time of year is also typically more affordable compared to the touristy summer months.

There's really not a bad time to visit Long Beach. The winter months, spanning from November through the beginning of March, do see a few days of rain and clouds, but visitors can still expect daytime temperatures in the upper 60s Fahrenheit. The winter months, outside of the holiday season, can also be an affordable time to visit.

The first time I visited Long Beach, I was thrown off by how much the seventh-largest city in the state felt like a small town.

Top things to do in long beach, head downtown.

At first glance, downtown Long Beach is just another cliché downtown in Southern California with high-rise, glass buildings, and trendy restaurants along a palm-lined promenade. 

And although that’s not far from the truth, don’t write downtown Long Beach off just yet. You might be surprised by its easygoing character and charm.

Speaking of charm, The Ordinarie has plenty! This warm tavern in downtown Long Beach serves delicious American cuisine accompanied by good music ranging from jazz to country. 

What locals love most about this place though is the holiday-themed food and drink during December.

Other places to eat downtown include Pier 76 Fish Grill , Bo-Beau Kitchen + Roof Tap , and George’s Greek Cafe .

Get Lost in the Scenic Neighborhood of Naples

Once you step on the streets of Naples, you’ll understand where the Italian names of the neighborhood and streets come from. 

Sitting atop three islands separated by canals, the entire neighborhood evokes an unmistakable Italian charm. 

You can expect gondolas floating in the canals, luscious greenery following you everywhere you look, and beautiful homes washed in sunlight.

Unlike much of the California Coast, where the Pacific Ocean is wild with waves and riptides, the beaches in Long Beach are on the calmer side. 

It’s only natural then that going to the beach is one of the main Long Beach activities to enjoy when you’re in town. 

Whether you’re with friends, family, or a loved one – there’s a beach for every occasion. The following are a few of my favorites.

Alamitos Park Beach

Head to Alamitos Park Beach if you’re looking for things to do in Long Beach with kids – the water here is usually pretty calm and gentle. 

On the side, there’s a grassy area with picnic tables and a little shade from the towering palms.

Rosie’s Dog Beach

Rosie’s Dog Beach is ideal if you’re looking for a good beach to bring your furry friend to. 

Between 6 am and 8 pm all doggos are welcome to play in the water or run around off-leash. The only rule is that you can’t bring more than one dog. 

Cherry Beach

If you want to mingle with the crowds and have access to more amenities, head to Cherry Beach (also known as Junipero Beach). 

For the early birds, there might be some free parking spots, otherwise, use the metered parking along the nearby streets.

With lifeguards always on duty, Junipero Beach is one of the safest beaches to swim at in town. Also, their recreational facilities are popular among the younger folk.

Explore the Bustling East Village Arts District

Show appreciation for local artists by heading to the Arts District of Long Beach. 

Despite being in downtown Long Beach, the East Village Arts District has the laid-back energy of a small town. 

Inside the restored historic buildings you’ll find art galleries, independent shops, cozy cafes, and restaurants. 

Start off your time in the neighborhood with brunch at Rose Park and a nice cup of specialty coffee from Ground Hideout Coffee .

With free parking and a general admission of $12, the Long Beach Museum of Art offers one of the most affordable yet brain-stimulating experiences in town.

Additionally, the Long Beach Museum of Art operates Claire’s, a restaurant with a gorgeous ocean view. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic date night, just make reservations ahead of time.

Learn History at Rancho Los Cerritos

Dating back to 1844, the Los Cerritos Ranch House provides a window into the Mexican history of the area. 

During its heyday, it was the most remarkable adobe residence in Southern California, housing cattle and sheep.

Today, it’s high on the list of top places to visit in Long Beach. 

It operates as a public Long Beach museum showcasing a Victorian-era interior, a formal Italian garden, library, and a gift shop.

Stroll Around Long Beach Waterfront

The bustling Long Beach Waterfront gives a special lure to the city. 

With so many vibrant boutiques and dining spots in Shoreline Village (the charming seaside hangout on the east side of Rainbow Harbor), it’s an unsurprisingly busy place at all times. 

One of the landmark spots drawing the most crowds is Parkers’ Lighthouse , a restaurant famous not only for its delicious food but also for the splendid harbor views from every table.

Once you’ve wined and dined, you can take a casual walk around ShoreLine Aquatic Park. 

It’s a public park with spectacular ocean views, rich greenery, and a lighthouse that separates Rainbow Harbor from Queensway Bay.

Another fun thing to do around the waterfront is shopping at The Pike Outlets. This is where you can find a good lineup of outlet stores for well-known brands and there’s even a Ferris wheel for the kids.

See the Marine Life Up Close in the Aquarium of the Pacific

One of the most popular Long Beach attractions with over 1.5 million visitors per year, the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to more than 12,000 aquatic animals from the largest ocean in the world. 

Of all the things to do in Long Beach with the family, visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific is definitely the most entertaining and educational. 

This is especially the case for the more interactive parts of the aquarium, like Shark Lagoon where you can go from being a spectator to a member of this aquatic community.

You’ll have a hard time pretending you’re not as excited as your kids to feed the sharks, pet the sturgeon and stingrays, touch the jellyfish, and so much more. 

The admission might be on the pricier side but it’s worth every penny. 

Local tip: Visit in the morning to avoid the bulk of the crowds.

Go Whale Watching

Depending on what time of year you visit Long Beach, there will be a parade of different types of whales swimming past the shore. 

These beautiful creatures are perhaps one of the most exciting things to see in Long Beach.

You can grab your binoculars and watch the largest mammals on Earth from the beach for free. 

However, I highly recommend hopping on one of the whale watching cruises that leave Long Beach. 

Even if they feel shy that day and don’t show up, you’ll most certainly see their cute friends, the bottlenose dolphins, and a beautiful view of Long Beach from the water.  

Either way, whale watching in Long Beach is always a fun day out on the water.

Fun Things to Do in Long Beach

Get furry cuddles at feline good social club.

If you want to unwind during your time in Long Beach, head to the Feline Good Social Club . 

It’s a cat lounge founded by a caring lady where you can play and socialize with over 25 adoptable cats. 

Anyone who walks in the Feline Good Social Club leaves with record-high dopamine levels.

And who knows, maybe one of these purry creatures will steal your heart and come with you back home.

Take the Ferry to Catalina Island

It’s probably weird that I’m sending you off of Long Beach, but hear me out. 

Catalina Island is Southern California’s jewel and Long Beach is the location of one of the main departure ports to get to the island. 

So, trust me on this one and hop on the Catalina Express for a day trip.

This small California island with infectious Mediterranean appeal offers hands down the best things to do near Long Beach. 

Not only does it have the warmest water in SoCal and some of the most beautiful beaches to boot, but it also features diverse and colorful aquatic life and clear water for stunning snorkeling. 

Or, if you don’t want to get wet, there’s plenty more to do on Catalina in a day : wander the streets of the waterfront town, hike the island and spot the bison, grab a buffalo milk cocktail, or indulge your taste buds in delicious seafood.

Hang Out at The Hangar

Gone are the days when Boeing manufactured commercial and military aircraft in Long Beach. 

But a couple of years ago, their 17,000 square foot facility was turned into a vibrant retail and dining area where locals now love to hang.

So if you’re looking for things to do in Long Beach at night, stop by The Hangar , even if you’re with kids. 

Kids will have a blast in the playground area while you enjoy live music with a cold pint of beer and seriously delicious food. 

Have a Good Laugh at Que Sera

Que Sera is a bar on 7th Street greatly loved by locals for their cheap prices and busy dancefloor. On Wednesdays though they attract huge crowds for something else – the best comedy show in town.

They partner up with Bear City Comedy to bring the most hilarious comedians on stage – among them are quite a few familiar faces from Netflix, HBO, and Comedy Central. 

One thing is for sure, you’ll leave the venue with sore abs from laughing all night long.

Go Vintage Shopping on Retro Row

As you’ve probably already guessed from the name, Retro Row isn’t filled with high-end designer brands. 

What you’ll find instead is trendy clothing, soulful antiques, rare furniture, a diverse food scene, and a few hipsters milling about. 

Speaking of food, the vegan housemade falafels at The HipPea are so wholesome, even the carnivores rave about them. 

But if you want to avoid any surprises in terms of flavor, The Little Coyote is the place for you – they serve the best pizza made with fresh ingredients.

And once you’re here don’t miss the local legend, Fingerprints Music . This vinyl records shop is widely popular for hosting local musicians as well as big names like the Foo Fighters and Brian Wilson.

If you’re looking for a more cinematic Long Beach sightseeing experience, finding famous filming locations can be a fun scavenger hunt around the city.  

Located only a stone’s throw away from Los Angeles, the city of Long Beach has appeared in many famous movies and shows. 

Although, more often than not, it’s under the disguise of another US city.

If you grew up during the 90s, you’d probably want to visit the houses from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and American Pie . And if you’re a La La Land fan, go for a drink at the Blind Donkey. 

Free Things to Do in Long Beach

One of the loveliest secret places in Long Beach, The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is quietly hiding on the campus of California State University Long Beach. 

Although it’s smaller in size, the garden is an oasis of tranquility. Plus, its romantic appeal makes for one of the best date ideas in Long Beach.

Until recently there was an entrance fee but you can now visit Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden free of charge during weekdays. You’ll just need to make an online reservation ahead of time. 

Bike the Shoreline Beach Path

Whether you’re into biking or skating, the Shoreline Bike Path is always a good bet for exercising in a scenic area. 

It stretches 7.3 miles from one end of the city to the other and provides the best views of the ocean, especially during sunset. 

There are many shops along the path to rent a bike from, but those in Shoreline Village are usually the most convenient. 

Local tip: Although the walking lane is separate from the Shoreline Beach Path, ride with extra caution because it gets busy and pedestrians sometimes walk into the bike lane.

Watch the Sunset from Hilltop Park

Of all the things to do in Long Beach for couples, watching the sunset from Hilltop Park is certainly the cheapest and most breathtaking. 

The park offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Long Beach, Downtown LA, Orange County , the mountains, and the ocean. 

It’s the best place to watch the sky light up in colorful hues and the city lights turn on as the sun slips below the horizon.

That being said, finding parking around sunset can be impossible, so either plan to climb the hill on foot or visit earlier to find a spot.

Get Fit with Yoga on the Bluff

Just a block away from the ocean, there’s a green area known as Bluff Park where locals go twice a day to do outdoor yoga. 

And it’s not just because it’s free, the friendly teachers at Yoga on the Bluff have really created a heartfelt community with their free classes.

If you decide to attend one of the Yoga on the Bluff classes, you’ll remember the experience long after leaving Long Beach.

Show Off Your Disc Golf Skills at El Dorado Park

This local’s favorite 18-hole disc golf course has been drawing crowds for four decades. 

Although you might occasionally stumble upon some competitive dudes, most people are super friendly and chill and just want to have some fun playing disc golf.

The only downside to the course is that the trees in the park sometimes make it hard for beginners, but, all in all, it’s a great disc golf park with regular maintenance.

Experience the Long Beach Grand Prix

Every April since 1975, over 100,000 people gather downtown to watch the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach . 

The Grand Prix of Long Beach is a three-day event that offers world-class racing, interactive displays, and fun for the entire family.

The tickets range from $27 to $345 depending on when, where, and what you want to attend. 

Some Airbnbs with a direct view of the racing circuit get up to $6,000 per night! For that reason, you’ll want to book well in advance because, view or not, this is probably the busiest tourist time in Long Beach.

Unique Things to Do in Long Beach

Take a ride on the aqualink water taxi.

Offering an entirely different perspective of the Long Beach Waterfront and downtown, riding the Aqualink Water Taxi for $5 is worth every penny and more! 

Besides the spectacular views, there are also snacks and alcohol to buy onboard so the half-hour drive makes the perfect start to a romantic date night. 

Board the taxi at Alamitos Bay and ride to the Pacific Aquarium, the Queen Mary, or Belmont Pier – whichever route you pick, you won’t be disappointed.

Soak Up the Art at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA)

Being the culturally diverse city that is, Long Beach is home to the Museum of Latin American Art – the only museum of contemporary Latin art nationwide. 

Although there are 1,300 pieces in the permanent collection, the Museum of Latin American Art doesn’t stop there. 

Understanding the importance that art has in society, the temporary exhibits always focus on underrepresented groups.

And if you love dancing under the starry sky as much as I do, you’ll love the Mariachi Nights in the Sculpture Garden. 

The tequila helps loosen up stiff feet and hips, and the tasty food will keep you happy all night long.

Go See the Skinny House

It was the year 1932 and Newton P. Rummonds bought a tiny piece of land measuring 10 feet by 50 feet – it was either that or never getting his $100 back. 

But can you build a house on such a tiny lot? Others didn’t think so, but Newton took the bet and proved them all wrong.

So today, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, this skinny Tudor-style home at 708 Gladys Avenue, is America’s skinniest house . 

And it has been inhabited ever since it was built. The last known owner, a nice cat-lady, lived in the three-story house at the end of the last millennium. In 2001 she decided to sell it, but to whom, remains a mystery to this day.

Take the Paranormal Tour on the Queen Mary

If you’ve ever heard of Long Beach before, you’ve also probably heard of its legendary ocean liner, the Queen Mary. 

Inaugurated in 1936, the transatlantic ship quickly became popular among Hollywood stars. Then World War II happened and the luxurious Queen Mary converted to the largest and fastest troopship in the world. 

In 1947, the Queen Mary welcomed passengers back onboard, reclaiming its old glory. Twenty years later, it set for its final cruise, docking permanently in the port of Long Beach and becoming a city landmark. 

With so much history on deck, it’s no wonder that the Queen Mary has been named the most haunted hotel in America. Throughout the years, there have said to be many ghost sightings and paranormal activities witnessed by visitors and staff. 

Don’t believe them? Then you won’t be scared to take one of the Twilight tours of Queen Mary . The guides take you to the most haunted places and just might convince you otherwise. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

The paranormal might not be your schtick, but there’s rarely a soul who can resist a thrilling detective mystery.

Same as the Museum of Latin American Art, this is the only museum in the US that’s dedicated to preserving the cultural and artistic heritage of the people of Oceania. 

Anyone who visits the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum only has words of praise for the curator, Fran, and the rest of the staff. 

Their permanent collection is a powerful reflection of the complex history of Oceania and the rotating temporary exhibits are just as well done, inviting visitors back time and again.

Outdoorsy Things to Do in Long Beach

Hike in white point nature preserve.

A wilderness oasis inside a concrete jungle, the White Point Nature Education Center and Preserve is the go-to place for locals seeking to reconnect with nature. 

Although the colors of the sky during sunset add a special flair, I find mornings to be the best time for a hike here. The trails aren’t as busy and the sun isn’t too hot yet. 

If you happen to visit in summer, prepare for a nature preserve in full bloom. July is especially magical when the sunflowers are in bloom.

Kayak in Naples Canal

There’s a long list of Long Beach water activities to enliven your visit. While some of them can scare off beginners, that’s usually not the case with kayaking . 

The calm waters in Naples Canal and the super friendly staff at Kayaking on the Water make it an easy and enjoyable activity for everyone. You can even take your dog with you ! 

For only $15 per hour, you get a one-of-a-kind tour around Naples Island and a close-up opportunity to see moon jellyfish and some open-air exercise while you’re at it. 

Have a Picnic at the Bluffs

Of all the outdoor activities to do in Long Beach, laying barefoot under the shade in Bluff Park, snacking on some light food, and breathing the salty air might be the most relaxing one. 

Due to its location, on one side you’ll enjoy a front-row view of the Pacific Ocean and on the other, the jaw-dropping mansions on Ocean Boulevard.

The serene atmosphere of Bluff Park is equally enticing to families with kids as well as to couples who want relaxed, romantic dates that don’t break the bank. 

Moreover, the park is usually packed with joggers and other folks trying to achieve their steps for the day.

Paddle Board in Alamitos Bay

It turns out that many fun activities in Long Beach include paddling in some way or form. 

Another beautiful place to explore in Long Beach is Alamitos Bay, right next to Naples, and sharing the same calm waters and charm. 

You can bring your own paddleboard or decide to rent one there. The friendly staff provide appropriate gear and walk you through the basics for maximum safety.

And if paddleboarding in still waters doesn’t excite you, you can check out the dolphin tours instead. 

On these tours, a boat takes you to the ocean where you can paddle with cute bottlenose dolphins that pop up near shore. 

Tours only take place on days when the ocean is calm enough to allow safe paddleboarding, but it’s a fun experience to have if you’re up for the adventure.  

Explore the El Dorado Nature Center

I’ve already told you about the disc golf course at El Dorado, but the El Dorado Nature Center offers even more. 

Some people go as far as comparing it to Narnia, so that might give you an idea of how beautiful it is. 

Trees and shade are scarce in Southern California, but not at El Dorado Nature Center. 

Turtles, squirrels, butterflies, and other lovely creatures will keep you company while exploring this slice of wilderness in the middle of the city. 

Throughout the preserve, you can walk along miles of paved and unpaved trails that go through scenic lakes and forests.

There’s no entrance fee if you walk in but plan to pay for parking if you drive there. 

Surf at Seal Beach

No, there aren’t any seals at Seal Beach and technically Seal Beach isn’t in Long Beach, but it’s the closest beach near Long Beach with good waves. 

You’d think that Long Beach would have some good surfing locations with neighboring surf hot spots like Huntington Beach, but, weirdly, that’s not the case.

Anyway, coming to Southern California and not hopping on a surfboard is like going to Italy and not eating pasta. 

Even if you have no idea how to surf (like me), you can always get beginner lessons to learn how to ride the waves. 

Finally, a water activity in Long Beach that doesn’t involve paddling! Opting for a day of sailing means you’ll get to ride the Pacific Ocean waves without even dipping a toe in the cold water (if you don’t want to).  

Charter a sailboat , bring your own food, and forget about any worries for two to three hours on the water. 

Depending on the time of year, besides the fantastic views, there’s also a good chance you might spot some local dolphins coming to greet you.

Local tip: Wear warm clothes because the breeze and ocean spray can sometimes feel like Chicago in January. Well, almost.

Best Time to Visit Long Beach

Since this is California , weather-wise there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit Long Beach. 

Nevertheless, being a coastal town, you’ll have a better experience in May through September when all events and outdoor activities are back in full swing. 

With that said, July and August are the hottest and most crowded, so it’s good to bear that in mind if you’re planning a summer visit. 

December, on the other hand, might be a good time to visit if Christmas is your favorite holiday. 

The whole city, especially Naples and Alamitos Bay, turns into a Christmas wonderland and the weather is still beautiful. 

How to Get Around Long Beach

As is the case with most big cities in Southern California, driving around Long Beach can be overwhelming. 

Instead of getting stuck in traffic and wasting time trying to find a parking space, consider some of the transportation options below. 

Passport Bus & Water Taxi

The Passport buses operate between downtown Long Beach and its major attractions. The best part about it? It’s FREE. Yes, you read that right. Just get on the bus and save yourself money, time, and stress.

The Aqua Bus, on the other hand, costs $1 and moves around the harbor.

A third option is the Water Taxi which costs $5 per ride and goes from the Aquarium of the Pacific or the Queen Mary to Alamitos Bay.

Electric Scooters

The city of Long Beach has partnered with several operators which are allowed to deploy up to 1,000 e-scooters across the city.

You can download the app and rent an electric scooter with a few taps.

Note: If you’re renting an e-scooter, please be careful moving around and abide by the rules. It’s illegal for electric scooters to ride on sidewalks and the maximum allowed speed is 15mph.

Just as the e-scooter program is run by the city, there’s another program for rentable bikes called BikeShare . 

They have different plans to choose from depending on how much time you’ll have in Long Beach. On their app, you can conveniently check locations and bike availability.

Or, if the city’s bike share program is a nuisance for you, there are at least a dozen bike rental places scattered across Long Beach where you can find yourself a two-wheel ride.

Note: If you want to visit Downtown Los Angeles, the Metro Blue Line light rail takes you directly there.

Tips for Visiting Long Beach

• Embrace the cultural diversity – Long Beach is proud of its culture and diverse communities. Embrace the cultural nature of the city through its food, unique neighborhoods, and annual events. Fun fact: There are more Cambodians in Long Beach than any other place in the world except for Cambodia. 
• Long Beach has its own airport – Before you book a ticket for LAX you might want to check for flights to Long Beach Airport from your destination. Even though it’s smaller, the airport is serviced by a handful of regional and major airlines and prices are often affordable, especially within California. Popular routes include San Francisco , Oakland, San Jose , Phoenix, Las Vegas, and more.
• Summer weekends in the city can get very busy – During the summer season, and especially during weekends, Long Beach streets, highways, and beaches get packed. If you’re visiting in the summer, plan out your itinerary ahead of time, book things in advance, and factor in extra time for traffic to prevent stressful situations.

Long Beach, California, known as "LBC" by the locals, is a city of about half a million people in Los Angeles (LA) County , located directly to the south of Downtown L.A.   Best known for its urban waterfront attractions like the Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific, the city has a small-town, provincial feel despite being the sixth largest in California, with bike-friendly streets, active neighborhood associations, and artist collectives.

You’ll find more music and cultural festivals every year in Long Beach than anywhere else in Southern California , while its thriving entertainment scene includes famed dive bars and live music venues that have launched a number of notable bands. The city also hosts the annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach , an event that turns downtown streets into a speedway every April. Overall, it's a great destination for anyone looking for fun times by the beach. With that said, here are the best things to do in town.

Hit the Beach

While the beaches you'll find in this part of California offer a  variety of activities  like biking, skating, and kiteboarding, they are sheltered by a breakwater, so there are no large waves for surfing here. If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Ocean without getting too sandy, try visiting grassy  Bluff Park , which runs parallel to the shoreline from the Long Beach Museum of Art to roughly Loma Avenue. Nearby, check out the Long Beach Navy Memorial, which pays tribute to the city's naval history. The Memorial includes a flag mast from the Long Beach Naval Hospital, an anchor from a ship in the Great White Fleet, and a replica of the compass rose from the Naval Station Administration Building.

Tour Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos

Rancho Los Alamitos  is located near California State University and is the last remaining corner of a Spanish land grant that was given in 1784. Today, it serves as a living history museum that includes six agricultural buildings, a working blacksmith shop, an adobe ranch, an exhibit center, a gift shop, and several impressive gardens.

Although you will have to leave Long Beach, a day trip or weekend jaunt to Catalina Island is a popular excursion from the area. Catalina Express  runs ferry service from Long Beach (as well as other ports like San Pedro and Dana Point) which takes about an hour one-way. Once you get to Catalina Island, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail, visiting the botanical gardens, and going on a thrilling undersea expedition in a semi-submersible boat.

Whether you're serious about learning to fly an airplane or just want to give it a whirl, Pacific Air Flight School  is a great place to take a small plane or helicopter flying lesson. Family-friendly beaches

Thanks to a protective breakwater built by the US Navy during the Second World War, Long Beach’s sandy shores are a great choice for families. Protected from major waves and without riptides, shorelines such as Alamitos Beach, Marine Park (aka Mother’s Beach) and Belmont Shore Beach provide plenty of space for sunbathing or sand-castle building and calm waters for families with small children to enjoy the beach without the worry of dangerous seas.

Water sports and tours

Always wanted to learn how to kite surf? The same breakwater that makes the shoreline safe for little ones also makes Long Beach’s Belmont Shores one of the best places for beginners to get the hang of the sport. Try out a 90-minute discovery lesson with SoCal Kitesurfing or jump into a three-hour group lesson with Captain Kirks.   Visitors can also rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, Aqua bikes, Duffy electric boats, and other watercraft at Rainbow Marina.

If being on the water is more your thing, a guided 45-minute harbour tour from Harbor Breeze Cruises will help you get your bearings and learn about the history and marine life of the Long Beach coast. Or choose one of their three-hour whale-watching tours . Look for grey whales between December and April, the mighty blue whales from June to October, and an endless supply of dolphins, sea lions and other marine life all year. Book online for the best deal. Looking for something even fancier? Charter a yacht through the Harbor Yacht Club or Pacific Sailing for a day or overnight trip to Catalina Island .

Also along the waterfront, sign up for the annual Aquarium of the Pacific 5K in October to run (or walk) past Rainbow Harbor and Queensway Bridge on a flat, scenic course. Bonus: All participants get a $5 voucher for admission to the aquarium.

Romantic getaway

For a little romance on your visit, take a Venetian gondola ride with Gondola Getaway . The one-hour gondola rides take groups of two to six passengers through the canals of Naples with views of million-dollar homes, luxurious yachts and the bridges that arch over the canals. Getting around town

The Long Beach waterways are also a great way to get around the city without getting in your car. From Rainbow Harbor, visitors can hop on the Aquabus , a 49-passenger boat that travels between Rainbow Harbor, the Queen Mary, Hotel Maya and the Catalina Landing, or the AquaLink , a 79-passenger high-speed catamaran that travels between Rainbow Harbor, the Queen Mary, Vet’s Pier and Alamitos Bay.

Shopping in Long Beach

Named as one of the Most Walkable Neighbourhoods in America by WalkScore.com, Long Beach is ideal for strolling and shopping. With a variety of distinct shopping areas to explore, everyone from lovers of vintage and bargain hunters to outlet lovers and luxury shoppers can satisfy their itch to shop.

Lovers of all things vintage rejoice! Known as Retro Row , the growing retail area on 4th Street between Walnut and Junipero is a three-block collection of eclectic shops boasting kitschy collectibles, vintage clothes and retro finds. Visit Moxi Roller Skate Shop for lessons and sweet wheels; browse vinyls at Third Eye Records or vintage clothing at Meow ; find a souvenir at Songbird Boutique ; or just grab a drink at one of the area’s many pubs and coffee shops and enjoy the people-watching. 

Pike Outlets

Thanks to a $65 million update in 2015, Long Beach’s Pike Outlets offer even more shops and restaurants for visitors to enjoy in a pedestrian-friendly setting. Located next to the Convention Center and Aquarium of the Pacific, the Pike Outlets satisfy shoppers with retailers including Restoration Hardware Outlet, H&M, Nike, Gap, Converse and Columbia Sportswear, among others. The outlets are even a great destination for an evening out in Long Beach: start with a wander along the waterfront, grab a pint at the Auld Dubliner Irish Pub and then enjoy a night of stand-up at the Laugh Factory . The outlets also host a range of events throughout the year, including the Urban Hive farmers' market on the fourth Friday of the month.

Second Street

Second Street and its 15 intersecting side streets make up the charming business district of Belmont Shore. Running parallel to the Pacific Ocean, Second Street offers shoppers a mile and a half of retail therapy opportunities. From well-known retailers such as Banana Republic and The Body Shop to boutique shops specialising in everything from swimming and surfing wear and accessories to the latest European clothing and jewellery designs, Second Street is a shopper’s paradise.

Aquarium of the Pacific

Located along Long Beach ’s Rainbow Harbor , the Aquarium of the Pacific is Southern California’s largest aquarium and a must-do Long Beach activity for all ages. Home to more than 11,000 animal exhibits, the aquarium explores three distinct waters of the Pacific Ocean. 

Start in the Southern California/Baja Gallery where you’ll find the 536,000-litre, three-storey-high Honda Blue Cavern that features ocean inhabitants found off the coast of Catalina Island. You’ll also want to visit the Seal and Sea Lion Habitat and the Ray Touch Pool. Highlighting habitats in and around the Bering Strait, the Northern Pacific gallery features a collection of graceful jellies, four playful otters in the Sea Otter Exhibit, and the largest species of octopus in the world, the giant Pacific octopus, which can be more than 20 feet long.

Then head to the warmer waters of the Tropical Pacific Gallery and the largest exhibit in the aquarium—the 350,000 gallon Tropical Reef Habitat , which can be viewed from three locations and holds thousands of colourful fish, coral, sea turtles, and two kinds of sharks. Don’t forget to stop by the seahorse and sea dragon exhibit to see if you can find these camouflaged creatures hiding among the seaweed.

In addition to the three main galleries, the aquarium also features outdoor exhibits, including an interactive Shark Lagoon, the Lorikeet Forest aviary, the penguin habitat, and a horseshoe crab touch lab.

If you’re looking to dive in further, the aquarium offers many educational , exclusive, and behind-the-scenes experiences. You can get up close and personal with animals such as stingrays, sea lions, and penguins, or dive right into an exhibit (certification required). If your kids have dreamed of staying overnight next to a gigantic fish tank , you can do that too.

The latest addition to the aquarium is Pacific Visions , a wing that helps aquarium visitors better understand the challenges the ocean faces and the opportunities it holds. The expansion, sheathed in a striking blue-green biomorphic shell, includes a state-of-the-art interactive theater, a larger exhibit gallery with live animals, and an art gallery.

Sign up for the annual Aquarium of the Pacific 5K in October to run (or walk) past the aquarium and other Long Beach sites on a flat, scenic course. Bonus: All participants get a $5 voucher for admission to the aquarium.

12 Things to do in Long Beach

Long Beach is a great Southern California coastal town with a lot to explore. It has one of the largest shipping ports in the United States, so the city feels pretty massive, but don’t let that scare you away. I have stayed in Long Beach many times, and it is easy to get around with lots of fun attractions.  I shared some of my favorite spots below and let me know what I left off in the comments.

Aquarium of the Pacific

While the Monterey Aquarium often overshadows it for the best aquarium in California, the Aquarium of the Pacific is still recognized as one of the best in the United States. This aquarium has over 500 species with many different exhibits showcasing everything from jellyfish to sharks, and with multiple feedings each day. It also has lots of great programs during the day for both children and adults. Give yourself at least a good 3-4 hours to see it all.

Shoreline Park

While visiting the aquarium, you should also take the time to walk over to Shoreline Park. This city park is popular because of the towering lighthouse that it has sitting on a hill overlooking the water. There are many walking, biking, and scootering paths that take you around the park and up to the lighthouse. The park also has a small sandy beach on the north side and fishing platforms on the south side. While there is not a ton to do, it is always an excellent spot to watch the sunset or relax and look out across the water at the Queen Mary.

The Pike Outlets

Across from the aquarium, in Downtown Long Beach, are the popular Pike Outlets. If you are into shopping, this is an excellent stop with lots of stores and a few restaurants. The Pike is also where the Ferris wheel is if you want to ride it and the iconic bridge that looks like a roller coaster. Amie and I like the shaved ice place (Snowopolis) in the middle of the Pike Outlets as well, especially if it is a hot summer day.

Harbor Cruise

While at Shoreline Park and the aquarium, consider taking a harbor cruise to get out on the water. The harbor cruises leave from right next to the aquarium, and they are a relatively inexpensive way to get a tour of the Long Beach waterfront. Amie and I enjoyed the 45 minute ride as it took us past the Queen Mary and the small oil drilling islands off the coast of Long Beach. We even got to see some seals while we were on the water as well.

After exploring the downtown area, consider heading out to the most famous Long Beach landmark, the Queen Mary. With a storied history of over 75 years, the Queen Mary has a lot to offer. After purchasing a ticket, you can head onto the boat and explore to your heart’s content. They also have tours that spotlight different parts of the ship, like the engine room and its “haunted areas” as well. Lastly, you can stay on the ship if you are looking for a unique place to stay in Long Beach. The Queen Mary can be pricey to visit, but it is undoubtedly a fun attraction in Long Beach.

Long Beach City Beach

Of course, for many people, a visit to Long Beach will include a lot of time on the sand. I haven’t spent much time at the beach myself, but I know that Long Beach City Beach is one of the most popular in Southern California. Also, Bluffs Park sits above it, and it is a great spot to walk along the coast with nice views down over the sand and out over the water.

Long Beach is an artistic city with a lot of different cultures present. These cultures are reflected through the unique murals located around the town that spotlight different styles of art. Just walking along downtown will let you see a bunch, and there are maps online that you can follow if you want to find them all. I personally like the Sublime mural outside of Floyds Barbershop the best myself.

Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles

Roscoes website says that they are a Long Beach based establishment, and every time I have visited this famous spot, it has been in Long Beach. I believe the original is the Hollywood location, but whichever one you go to, you are sure to have a good experience indulging a combination of two foods you wouldn’t often think to have together. The savory chicken mixed with the waffle and the sweet maple syrup is a pairing that is hard to beat. Give it a try at one of the California originators of this popular dish.

Hilltop Park Signal Hill

While technically north of the city of Long Beach, Hilltop Park in Signal Hill is a great stop when in the city, especially for sunset. This park has 360-degree views of the surrounding area with a vantage point that lets you look down on Long Beach, San Pedro, and even over into Torrance. It can be hard to find parking though, so get here early on the weekend to grab a spot and watch for no parking signs as I have often seen the police giving out tickets.

Heading out from the downtown area, if you want to get on the water, you should consider renting a hydrobike. Hydrobikes are something I have only ever seen in Long Beach, although I am sure they are in other places as well. These unique ocean-faring bikes allow you to pedal your way across the top of the water, and they are a great way to get the blood flowing and to see the area. Plus, the hydrobikes rental area is next to Ballast Point, which is a famous brewery from San Diego if you want to get a drink after your time on the water.

Before jumping into a few food recommendations, I wanted to suggest a day trip to Catalina. If you are spending a few days in Long Beach, then a great way to see a new part of California is to take the boat to Catalina Island. I have an entire video on how to spend a day there that you can see here , and it is an entertaining way to spend a day.

Restaurants

For my last recommendation, here are three quick food spots I like in Long Beach.

Attic – First, The Attic is an excellent spot with southern food. The highlight here is any of their crazy Mac and cheeses.

Open Sesame – Next, Open Sesame is a good Mediterranean restaurant with amazing hummus and pita bread.

Seabirds – Lastly, Amie is a huge fan of Seabirds, which is s vegan restaurant that is highly rated, and that has tacos she enjoys.

At this antique market, you’ll find some of the coolest things you’ve ever seen for sale.

You’ll see people arriving at this market before the sun has fully risen.

It’s no surprise this is one of the most popular activities, as there’s so much good stuff for sale.

You can find great antiques to put up in your home while browsing this market.

The Long Beach Antique Market is one of the top places to see in California.

It’s open on the third Sunday of each month, from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

General admission is $8, and early admission is $12.

Children younger than 12 get in for free.

2. Long Beach Museum of Art

One of the best ways to experience culture in this city is by visiting the Long Beach Museum of Art .

You can see incredible and thought-provoking works at this institution.

There are thousands of amazing pieces at this museum.

Some of them are hanging on the wall, while others are out on the floor.

You can see pieces from abroad and from California.

The unifying theme is great art, coming from different places and times.

Going to this art museum is one of the best things to do in this city.

There’s also a wonderful Sculpture Garden outside.

The museum is open on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from Fridays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4. The Queen Mary

The R.M.S. Queen Mary was more than a ship.

Although it’s no longer a vessel, it can still be explored, docked in Long Beach.

You can still spend a few nights on the Queen Mary .

It currently operates as a very high-end hotel.

Should you just want to learn about this ship and its amazing story, it’s also a museum.

Talk about making the most out of a potentially tricky situation when the ship was taken out of service.

It’s especially important as there are no other museums like this in the United States.

The MOLAA has grown since it first opened in 1996.

Like MOLAA, the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum spotlights the importance of the Pacific Islands and its people.

The art here is powerful in execution and emotions.

Located near MOLAA, the PIEAM is a great place to go to enhance your cultural understanding while in this city.

Opened in October 2010, PIEAM came from the passion of doctor and Pacific Islands lover Robert Gumbiner.

His founding of FHP International was a major boost to healthcare in Guam and the rest of the islands.

While he passed before the museum opened, his contributions must be acknowledged.

The Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum is a wonderful tribute to a great place, spearheaded by a devoted man.

You can see dolphins frolicking or just enjoy the ambiance of it all.

Try taking in a dinner a Parkers’ Lighthouse, one of the finest seafood restaurants in the state.

15. Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden

It’s one of the main points of interest for people curious about Japanese culture.

At this center, you can bring yourself into a new line of thinking, hopefully learning some important things about yourself along the way.

You don’t need to have any prior knowledge about Japanese gardens to visit this one, located on California State University Long Beach’s campus.

However, it’s easy to gravitate to the tranquility of things like their koi pond and pagodas.

17. Long Beach Bayou Festival

Some of the best things to do in California are going to annual events in Long Beach.

The Long Beach Bayou Festival is one of these amazing experiences.

It’s what to do in Long Beach if you want to see how this city tributes other regions.

For one June weekend, Long Beach becomes New Orleans , and there’s hardly a missed step.

As you’d hope for from a Bayou Festival, this one has incredible food and music.

It’s a lively environment that summons the feeling of being on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras, complete with a Mardi Gras-style parade.

Young guests can love exploring the “Kids Corner,” learning to dance and getting their faces painted.

The Bayou Festival is lots of fun and very heartwarming when you see how much effort is put into it and how much guests, performers, and vendors are enjoying it.

If you’ve never been to New Orleans, you can get a good idea of what the fuss is like.

1) Hire A Duffy On Alamitos Bay

A Duffy boat ride is a must in Southern California, and cruising around Alamitos Bay and the canals in Long Beach is the perfect place to do it. There are a few Duffy rental options including Boathouse On The Bay and London Boat Rentals . We went out for a 2 hour cruise with Boat House On The Bay and couldn’t recommend them enough.

The Duffy is big enough for a group and has a deck at the back with extra seating. You can bring your own snacks or arrange for these beforehand with Boathouse On The Bay – treat yourself to some prosecco and oysters and turn your ride into a luxury cruise! 

2) Take A Boat Tour Around Long Beach Harbor

Harbor Breeze Cruises offers a scenic boat tour of Long Beach Harbor, which is a great way to get out on the water and see the area from the ocean. These tours also visit Rainbow Harbor, Shoreline Village, Point Vicente Lighthouse, the Port of Long Beach, and go past the Aquarium of the Pacific.

You can often spot bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales, seals, orcas, gray whales, and more from these boat tours.

3) Go Kayaking In Belmont Shore

If you want to take to the water but want a more tranquil experience, you can rent kayaks in Belmont Shore and explore the calmer waters around this area. You can even paddle past the incredible mansions and through the canals in Naples. If you prefer to relax and have someone else do the work you can even take a ride in a genuine Venetian gondola ! 

4) Visit Retro Row And Visit The Unique Stores

Retro Row or Fourth Street is an area of the city with many restaurants and bars and unique boutique stores selling vintage products, retro furniture, and quirky gifts. This area also has the historic  Art Theatre, beauty salons, and spas.

5) Take A Walk Around Belmont Shore

Belmont Shore is a great location to take a walk around or hire a bicycle and has a large array of restaurants and markets to stop for lunch or pick up some fresh produce.

There is also a beach path to walk along the oceanfront, or you can relax on the beach. You can even take to the water and try sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, water skiing, go swimming, or stick to the dry land and have a game of volleyball.

During the summer, Belmont Shore has live music and local art displays on Thursday nights and many other events happening throughout the summer months. 

6) Visit The Attic On Broadway For Brunch

No weekend or girls’ getaway would be complete without a stop for brunch, and a great place to have brunch in Long Beach is at The Attic on Broadway .

This southern-style Instagrammable brunch spot opened in 2012 and is located within a 1920s’ style building. The idea and feel of the location are to remind visitors of a family brunch with the traditional favorites and some unique additions, including the famous MacNCheetos.

They also have an incredible Bloody Mary, which comes with an entire slider stacked on. They have great traditional southern cocktails famous in New Orleans – the hurricane and the Mexican michelada. And, of course, mimosas!

7) Purchase Some Souvenirs At Cityology

If you are looking for some gifts from your friends or family from your trip, Cityology is the right place to stop as it sells everything you can imagine and more. Other great shopping spots close by are the women’s boutique Elison Rd , the gift shop Luna, House of Intuition , and Blue Windows .

8) Visit Long Beach’s Answer To Italy In The Naples Neighborhood

If you miss Europe or want to get a feel of Italy, head to Long Beach’s Naples neighborhood. Fitting to its name, Naples resembles the infamous Italian city of Venice, divided into three islands, surrounded by canals and connected by beautiful arched bridges.

Even the street names in Naples are Italian. There is also Bella Flora Park within the neighborhood, which is home to the La Bella Fontana Di Napoli, a three-tiered fountain built in 1971.

A great way to explore Naples is to wander around the streets or take to the water on a paddleboard, kayak or gondola.

9) Learn To Roller Skate 

Before visiting Long Beach I had no idea that they had such a skating community. You will quickly discover that roller skating is one of the most popular Long Beach pass times due to the 5.5 mile beach path that makes the perfect skating lane.

10) Explore El Dorado Nature Center

El Dorado Nature Center is a 105-acre park perfect for getting back to nature and away from the city streets. The center has an abundance of flora and fauna with two miles of trails by lakes, streams, and forest areas. The nature center has an educational center, art gallery, and small gift shop.

My favorite hotel to stay in is the Hotel Maya , located in Downtown Long Beach in Queensway Bay. The hotel has taken inspiration from Latin America while also feeling at home in southern California.

This hotel covers 14 acres, with a 6,500 square feet of resort-style outdoor space, complete with a man-made beach, fire pits, day beds and an amazing swimming pool complete with poolside cabanas. The resort hotel has 199 rooms with a mixture of suites, water view rooms, accessible rooms, all in various configurations.

The resort also has water sports, tours, and the Latin-infused Fuego restaurant . If you don’t choose to stay at the hotel you can head to Fuego for brunch on the water.

Korean Friendship Bell

Located in San Pedro, the Korean Friendship Bell is located within Angels Gate Park. The bell was given to Los Angeles in 1976 by the Republic of Korea to celebrate the 200th anniversary of US Independence.

The bell is rung every 4th July, National Liberation Day of Korea (August 15), Korean-American Day (January 13), New Year’s Eve, and the 1st Saturday of each month.

Wayfarers Chapel

Wayfarers Chapel is located in Rancho Palos Verdes, on the Pacific Ocean coastline. Famous for its uniqueness and original design, with views over the ocean.

Point Vicente Lighthouse

Located just 30 minutes drive outside the city, the Point Vicente Lighthouse is located on a clifftop in Rancho Palos Verdes. Built in 1926, the lighthouse is used by the United States Coast Guard, but it is open for tours on the second Saturday of each month (except March) and during the annual Whale of a Day festival (March).

There are many hiking routes around the area to see the lighthouse and surrounding cliffs.

The Queen Mary

Located in Long Beach, the RMS Queen Mary is a retired 1930s British Ocean Liner which made its home in Long Beach in 1967. The Queen Mary is currently closed to visitors, but you can get great views of the ship from Lions Lighthouse, the dock outside of Parkers Lighthouse or a stroll down the water’s edge from the Maya Hotel.

The Aquarium

The Aquarium of the Pacific is a must-see for any traveler to Southern California. It is Southern California’s largest aquarium, has over 1.7million visitors per year and it displays about 12,000 animals and more than 100 exhibits that celebrate the planet’s largest body of water: The Pacific Ocean!

Its galleries represent both frigid waters from Northern parts of the country as well as temperate regions like those seen in San Diego, where you can see sea lions bobbing up and down at their enclosure.

Throughout the year there are art exhibits, performing arts shows, and cultural and community festivals to make science accessible to all visitors. Its Guest Speaker Series and Aquatic Academy courses offer visitors an opportunity to learn about ocean and environmental issues from the scientists. 

When Should I Visit Long Beach?

With an average year-round temperature in the 70s (20s Celsius), there isn’t a bad time of year to visit Long Beach. To experience the city with fewer crowds, for the warmer weather, and with less chance of rain, is it best to visit between May and September.

Lodging rates are slightly higher between June and August, but you can find some great accommodation deals in the spring and the fall.

Throughout the year, the city has a large number of festivals and outdoor events. Some great events are:

How To Get To Long Beach

The closest large airport to Long Beach is in Los Angeles. The  Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located around 25 miles or just over 25 minutes (traffic dependent) from Long Beach. From there you can rent a car, or take a taxi into Long Beach.

Alternatively, Long Beach has a small, stress-free airport –  Long Beach Airport (LGB) , which serves a number of domestic routes via Southwest, Delta, American Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines. The airport was recently named one of the Top 10 Small Airports by USA Today.

Long Beach Long Weekend Itinerary

Long Beach is a great destination to visit for a long weekend, weekend, or week-long trip.

Here is a sample long weekend itinerary to give you an idea of what you can fit in and some must-visit restaurants and things to do.

Friday is a great day to arrive in the city for a long weekend break, either by flying into LAX or Long Beach Airport or driving, depending on your location and preferred mode of transportation. My favorite hotel to stay in Long Beach is Hotel Maya , which resembles a Caribbean resort on 14 acres of Long Beach coastline.

After settling in at the hotel, a great place to go for dinner and drinks on Friday night is District Wine , a wine bar with an outdoor fire pit and indoor lounges. The restaurant normally has a wine special, and the prosciutto bon-bons are a must-try. 

Brunch is the perfect way to start a Saturday morning, and the Fuego restaurant in Hotel Maya is a great place to have brunch, with views of the city’s skyline across the water.

Saturday is a great day to take to the water and rent a boat on Alamitos Bay. Book a Duffy tour with Boathouse On The Bay ; they even have the option to get food and drinks delivered to the boat or purchase them before you depart for your ride.

After an early afternoon on the water, head to Retro Row for some retail therapy. Retro Row (Fourth Street) is a great place to purchase quirky gifts, high-end retro furniture, vintage clothes, and other great stores. Don’t forget to pop into Oh La Vache to buy some cheese, or you can order a cheeseboard. Across the street from there is a wine bar called Art Du Vin , where you can eat your cheese and have a glass of wine, handpicked for you by a knowledgeable sommelier.

Lola’s Mexican Cuisine is a locally beloved restaurant in Retro Row if you get hungry after your wine bar experience. Alternatively, another great dining option is   Parker’s Lighthouse , which has incredible views of the harbor, The Queen Mary, and the Lion Lighthouse. 

BO-Beau kitchen + rooftap, is a perfect post dining nightcap location, with the choice of a plush lounge or upstairs there is a “rooftap.”

Start your morning at Lion’s Lighthouse , this is the perfect vantage point to look back over at Parkers Lighthouse and view the Queen Mary. There is nearby parking and it is a quick walk from the carpark out to the lighthouse.

Another day, another brunch location, this time one of the most famous brunches in the city –  The Attic on Broadway which has incredible Bloody Mary’s and an extensive cocktail menu. The food is also delicious, with a mix of traditional southern favorites and unique additions such as MacNCheetos.

My favourite things on the menu are the beignets, the avocado toast and of course the mimosas!

A great Sunday afternoon activity is to take a walk along  Belmont Shore , with unique stores, a beachfront walkway, or just simply spend some time relaxing on the beach. This is an excellent location to go shopping: some great stores are Cityology, the women’s boutique Elison Rd , the gift shop Luna, House of Intuition , and Blue Windows .

After your stroll it’s time to say goodbye to Long Beach.

Things to Do in Long Beach California

T hinking about taking a break and heading to Long Beach, California? There are so many things to do in Long Beach we have created a list of some of the top things to do once you are there.

Imagine my happiness when I walked off the plane and the warmth was like a blanket over my entire body.

It took about 25 minutes to get to our hotel, The Hyatt Centric, from LAX. The Hyatt Centric is located smack dab in the middle of a brand spanking new shopping outlet center. Yay ME!!! The shopping center had many of my favorite stores and they are still adding more.

The Hyatt Centric welcomed us with open arms at our very late arrival. Our room had two double beds and the spacious bathroom had enough room for both of us to have our cosmetics sprawled out. The walk-in shower was perfect to wash away the long plane ride. You also had your choice of a waterfall or hand sprayer and a stool if you needed to put your leg up to shave away the Northeast winter legs. Before heading out, check out the views from the Rooftop 360° , you truly get a panoramic view of Long Beach! If you’re there in warmer weather you will want to plan a day at the pool to relax in a cabana, swim, and of course have a few drinks!

As I said I was invited but when I’m experiencing a property, restaurant, or activity, I never say I’m media because I want them to treat me like everyone else……and I expect to be treated special… I’m worth it! The customer service at Hyatt Centric was spot on and I was always greeted with a smile and everyone was helpful……even when I was exhausted and the man at the desk stopped me before I walked into the mirror with a smile. I’m sure he had a good laugh afterward but he saved me from being mortified by my exhaustion.

Tour the Legendary Queen Mary

This attraction is for the ship lovers, history lovers, luxury lovers and everyone else!  The Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England on May 27, 1936. She was pure luxury with five dining areas and lounges, two cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. The Queen Mary was for the rich and famous and considered as the only civilized way to travel.

Fun Fact: Legend has it that the board of directors at Cunard had decided to name the ship the Queen Victoria, which would have been in keeping with the tradition of Cunard ships having the “ia” suffix (Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengeria). As per protocol, legend states that the Cunard directors went to ask King George his blessing of the ship’s proposed name saying, “We have decided to name our new ship after England’s greatest Queen,” meaning Queen Victoria, the King’s Grandmother. Upon which the King is reported to have stated, “My wife (Queen Mary) will be delighted that you are naming the ship after her.”

Be sure to plan a dinner at five-star award winning Sir Winston’s. You will receive impeccable service and choices from the gourmet menu which will have your mouth watering. The Chateaubriand and Beef Wellington are a steak lovers dream. The extensive wine list will quench your thirst and you may fall into a daydream with the ambiance and seaside view. They make sure your taste buds will enjoy every ingredient as they serve you an intermezzo “sorbet”.

It’s about a twenty five minute walk but a taxi will have you there in just a few minutes. Pack a couple towels, sunscreen, and water in a bag and plan on soaking in the beautiful view and frolicking along the edge of the water. Of course feel free to take a dip. Long Beach is a popular destination for filming movies and TV shows so don’t be surprised if you should stumble across one in the process.

A Romantic Gondola Ride

You may not be in Italy but it doesn’t mean you can’t experience old world charm and a thousand year old tradition on a romantic Venetian gondola ride on Alamitos Bay and around Naples Island. We were greeted at Gondola Getaway by a gondolier who gave us chocolate covered strawberries and a red rose. Once aboard the gondola there was a blanket should we get chilly. Your gondolier (Ours was Andrew) took us along a quiet route between the beautiful houses of Naples Island which lasted about an hour. We had the pleasure of Andrew singing Italian songs as we coasted along the waterway. His voice was so beautiful and one of the songs put tears in my eyes because it was a song my poppy used to sing, Luna Mezzo Mare (aka C’e la Luna).

Fun Tip: Bring a bottle of wine and ask which booking will have the best view of the sunset.

Shoreline Village

SHOP!!! Yes stroll along the pathway from the hotel and discover Shoreline Village. You will find boutiques, food, and of course places to have drinks. This is the perfect spot at lunch time. Find a table outside and enjoy the fresh sea breeze while sipping on your favorite cocktail and devouring lunch. Save room for the funnel cake!

Shop Tip: Fashion is important and we need to be trendy – Make sure to stop by SAGA! Their designs are trendy with great prices. There’s also a great hat store that has a lot of hat history facts along with old hats. Perfect for those who like fun facts to share at random times and of course to buy a new hat.

Tour The Aquarium Of The Pacific

With 50 exhibits that represent the diversity of the Pacific Ocean. It seemed at every turn there was an interactive exhibit. Some favorites were touching the jellies (yes you can touch them) and they always fascinate me when they glow in the dark. I also touched a baby hammerhead shark and stingrays. I got a little silly when I found Nemo and Dory and the sea otters had me cracking up- I wish I could have taken one home!

SGT. Peppers Dueling Pianos

If you love interactive, then you will want to go to Sgt. Peppers Dueling Pianos. The dueling piano players will have you singing, laughing, and clapping along as they play your favorite songs! Want to take a break to chat? No problem, grab your drinks and head to the outside bar.

There’s plenty to do to keep you busy each day but there is also the feeling of going slow so a day relaxing by the pool will fit perfectly. Have any other questions….ask away?

'It's like a fever dream:' Sweet Tomatoes fans celebrate the return of the salad buffet

When Sweet Tomatoes announced in 2020 that it would be closing all locations in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans were heartbroken. Four years later, it's back.

The first Sweet Tomatoes in the country to reopen held a grand opening on April 1 in Tucson. By 10:30 a.m., a line wrapped around the building as fans drove from all over the state and beyond for a taste of their favorite salads and soups.

The first person in line was Matt Burns from Long Beach, California. He said he came to the restaurant early to be first in line while the rest of his family slept in at their Airbnb.

"My whole family just loves (Sweet Tomatoes). We had one right down the street from us that got shut down," Burns said.

Sweet Tomatoes opens in Tucson and inspires a family vacation

The grand opening fell conveniently at the same time as Burns' daughter's spring break, so he and his family were able to take a family vacation together to eat at one of their favorite restaurants.

"I just love salads, that's literally why I always pushed for it," he said. "My daughter loved the aspect of being able to make her own meal."

Burns' daughter is 15 years old now, but he remembers taking her to Sweet Tomatoes from the time when she was a little kid as a family bonding experience.

He said he hopes more locations open elsewhere in the U.S.

Friends bond over memories new and old at Sweet Tomatoes

Friends Hayden Coatney and Colton Yogerst from Glendale were also among the first in line. They, too, were inspired to make the drive by memories of going to Sweet Tomatoes with parents and grandparents as children.

Coatney said he remembers his grandparents taking him to Sweet Tomatoes when he was young. The last time he visited the restaurant was when his grandpa passed away in 2018.

"We knew when there was an opening day, we were going to drive all the way," Yogerst said. "He ended up sleeping over at my house last night and then we planned it out. There was no way we wouldn't be here opening day though, because we had just been checking so long."

While Coatney and Yogerst initially planned to visit opening day because they wanted a taste of the food, they both said that the journey was the most fun part.

"It's kind of silly when you think about it, to drive all the way to Tucson, but now that we're actually here, it's like a fever dream almost," Yogerst said.

How to visit Sweet Tomatoes

Sweet Tomatoes held a grand opening celebration for its Tucson location at 11 a.m. on April 1. The restaurant is now open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Residents and activists visit the massive 2,800-acre 'lab' of cliffs, meadows – and poison.

San Fernando Valley residents and activists had a rare chance to tour the vast Santa Susana Field Lab superfund site on Saturday, April 6, during an onsite workshop explaining the efforts to clean the infamous site’s polluted groundwater.

The massive Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) is home to sandstone cliffs, oak woodland, meadows, mountain vistas, cougars, deer and bobcats. It’s also the land where scientists conducted cutting-edge nuclear research and rocket testing between 1949 and 2006 to assist the nation’s most ambitious space programs, including the Mercury flights, the Apollo 11 Moon landing and the Space Shuttle missions.

Those activities left the sprawling 2,800-acre lab’s soil and groundwater tainted with hazardous materials , sparking concerns as r esidential homes and schools sprung up near the once-remote field in the Simi Hills that separate the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley.

During the hydrogeological tour, dubbed the “Groundwater U Workshop,” visitors were transported between three sites operated by Boeing , NASA, and the Department of Energy, making stops at each to hear presentations about groundwater cleanup efforts .

In Area IV, managed and leased by the Department of Energy from Boeing, Josh Mengers, the site manager of the Energy Technology Engineering Center and project director for the years-long cleanup, told the group of about 75 visitors — including a Los Angeles Daily News team — that contamination seeped into groundwater from the Sodium Disposal Facility. The facility was built to treat waste and has been demolished .

“The main concentrations of TCE that we have found are in the weathered bedrock and that’s where we have been doing interim measures since 2017,” Mengers explained, referring to trichloroethylene, or TCE. “And in these interim measures, we have reduced the concentrations of TCE through pumping — and then shipping off-site for testing and treatment.”

In the past, contamination from the facility was transferred into ponds which eventually seeped into the groundwater, Mengers said.

The presence of TCE is concerning because long-term exposure to the chemical can result in an elevated risk of developing liver and kidney cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We have reduced the concentrations in the wells that we are treating, from over 10,000 parts per billion, down to 500 parts per billion. So we’re hoping that this is a method that is working,” Mengers said.

While the method of pumping out and then shipping the TCE to a treatment facility has proved to be effective, Mengers said, the goal of his team is to install an automated pumping system using solar power instead of doing it manually.

In January, Boeing began extracting tainted soil from the so-called “burn pit,” a six-acre site where Rocketdyne workers dumped large amounts of radioactive pollutants, chemicals, and explosives into an open pit.

While various research and remediation efforts are underway , such as shipping TCE out of the area for treatment, they are mostly pilot programs. The cleanup of the Santa Susana lab area, which is located north of Bell Canyon, hasn’t started yet .

Boeing scientists told the visitors on Saturday that the company installed more than 500 monitoring wells at the site and in surrounding areas. The company also collected 28,000 groundwater samples, and sampled 65 spots where groundwater emerges to the surface through seeps and springs. The company also built a groundwater extraction treatment system that can pump groundwater from wells at the Santa Susana field and remove chemicals.

At the next stop in the tour, researchers who work in Area II, consisting of 409.5 acres and operated by NASA, told the visitors that their investigation revealed the presence of volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, in the shallow bedrock.

NASA is working on a pilot program using vapor extraction to remove chemicals from the bedrock in the Alpha Test Area, where researchers found high concentrations of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that include a range of chemicals that may have adverse health effects on humans.

Researchers have been using a system called the Bedrock Vapor Extraction that draws vapors from fractures in bedrock in the groundwater. The system pulls air and vapors through the bedrock and up to the surface. Then the chemicals are captured by a carbon filter and the now-treated air — which NASA says is clean — is released into the atmosphere.

NASA’s Bedrock Vapor Extraction system operates on solar power. It’s portable and can operate in other locations at the Santa Susana field.

“This system is mobile, modular and solar-powered,” said Peter Zorba, a NASA project director at the Santa Susana Field Lab. He stood next to the aging and towering Alpha Test Stand 1 . Constructed in the 1950s, they were home to rocket testing for NASA’s Space Shuttle program and for U.S. Air Force missiles.

NASA scientists began using the Bedrock Vapor Extraction system in February and have removed nearly 1,000 pounds of TCE from the Alpha area since then.

“I’m going to operate here for 18 months and then I’m going to pack it up, I’m going to turn it off, fold it up and then I’ll move it on trailers … to the next site” at the lab, Zorba said.

The Bedrock Vapor Extraction system “cost a premium,” Zorba said, compared to other technologies that are not portable or mobile.

NASA, Boeing and the U.S. Department of Energy are responsible for remediating the Santa Susana according to a 2007 agreement the parties signed that requires them to clean up the ground and the underground to a level at which people could safely live there — and could even grow vegetables.

One of the tour participants, who introduced himself as Kevin, said he used to work as an electrical engineer at Rocketdyne, the former owner of the Santa Susana field, and he visited the site several times for work.

He grew up in Northridge and still remembered the sense of excitement hearing the roaring sound of rocket testing coming from the lab. But he eventually became concerned about contamination that tainted the sprawling field.

He said he became concerned about the cleanup efforts after he heard about community members who lived near the site and whose children had cancer.

“They tell you some nice things today and that’s good and I’m encouraged by that,” he said. “But you have to look at that in terms of what’s the aggregate of the problem? What is the size of the problem? And are these techniques that they’re using viable for making this safe in a reasonable period?”

All visitors, including the Daily News crew, were asked to sign a release of liability and indemnification agreement, saying that “in consideration of the permission granted by the Boeing Co. and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to enter Boeing’s and NASA’s property located in Ventura County, CA (Santa Susana) … I understand that I am responsible for and assume the risk of my own well-being during my time spent on the Santa Susana property, including without limitation the actions or negligence of other persons, or accidents or illness.”

The tour ended in the afternoon.   As visitors headed to the exit, West Hills resident and activist Melissa Bumstead offered visitors a plastic bag filled with instructions on how to properly wash shoes and clothes after visiting the superfund site.

“We are deeply concerned about the contamination,” she said.

Edward and Victor are absolutely amazing! I don't know much about cars and they were more than happy to help. This location is better than the LB BLVD location in my opinion. One of the workers at the LB BLVD charged me 1,400 more than the dealership and more than this Atlantic location. But here, they weren't overflowing me with compliments to butter me up or whatever. They were super genuine. Super real. And extremely helpful. I actually came here because it was recommended through AAA. So I was able to get a discount. I appreciate the complimentary water and complimentary ride home. The service here was fantastic. I still a lot of work to do on my car but at least I can drive it

There was a $10 Service Fee under RO Fees on my invoice. I asked what this was for, and the reply was, "AS OF LAST MONTH ALL OF OUR SHOPS NOW CHARGE A $10 SERVICE FEE FOR ANY REPAIR OR SERVICE PERFORMED." The service agent followed up with me and contacted the operations manager and they are refunding the service fee.

Took my kid's 2003 BMW E39 into Orozco's on Atlantic recently. The car had been severely neglected by my kid, extremely low on oil, dried up coolant expansion tank, and a cylinder misfire (resulting in shuddering engine). We thought the worst case scenario (destroyed engine?) going into visit them and they knew it. Rather than unnecessarily finding things to fix (which they certainly could have done), they focused only on the root cause of the issue, and got my kid back on the road. Edward and the techs at Orozco's is my new "go to" trust worthy & knowledgeable independent mechanic. I will probably start taking all my cars to them.

My mom came here to get her breaks done. She set her appointment for 8am, and she even arrived 30 minutes early at 7:30am. She was told it would be about 2hrs, so she decided to walk to the nearest Starbucks to get her a coffee, she had just gotten off work after a 12hr shift, and needed some caffeine to keep her awake. 3hrs go by, and she called and asked if her car was ready. They said no. So she continued to sit at Starbucks. Around 12 p.m., she decided to head back, thinking the car would be ready since she had dropped it off at 7:30, and it was now 12pm. When she arrived, her car was still sitting in the same spot it was when she dropped it off. It had not been touched at all. My mom told them to give her keys back because she could not wait any longer. This is by far the worst place she had ever been, whatever u do, do not come here. If i could give 0 stars, I would. These people never updated her to tell her that the wait would be long or anything. Just a terrible place.

Got my car serviced on September 15th-16th. For oil change and k&n filter cleaning. Spoke to Eddie when dropping off my car. He asked if it was ok to take my keychain off my keys. I declined because I've had other shops give me the wrong key before and wanted to avoid any possibility of it happening again, and he gave me a weird look. Today I was cleaning out my car and found a random camry car key in my car. Ironic. And since its Sunday I can't bring the keys back to the shop because they're closed today. Definetly will not be bringing my car back to this place, this is a level of carelessness that I can't condone or give my business to. 0 out of 5 stars for sure. Losing customers keys is terrible for business. Misplacing a customers key in another customers vehicle is even worse. Go give your business to a business that actually cares about the customers property.

Can't speak highly enough about the experience I just had & as well as the good people over at Orozco's Auto. Edward & Victor were extremely nice, respectful, & informative when they helping me out with my 1996 Grand Cherokee's issues. I was going to LB Walker Auto for years until they surprisingly got shady & tried to take advantage of me. They wanted to charge me 2x what Orozco's quoted me after trying to convince me to junk my (low miles & well taken care of Jeep) & get me to buy one of their customers 4WD vehicles...that i'm sure they would have profited off of. Long story short, ended up coming to Orozco's & won't be looking back from here on out. If you are in a position like I was looking to find a long-term auto mechanic shop to build a relationship with - one that you can trust, will have your best interest, value your business, & treat you with the upmost respect - this is 100% the place to go to. They also support local businesses by spreading love/awareness & have a food drive/donation type of charity with canned goods to feed the hungry. I ended up leaving my first visit at Orozco's with a couple bags of cookies from a new local bakery, along with a bunch of smiles + handshakes from the staff on my way out. Keep it up guys, you're truly a staple to the community & rare neighborhood gem.

Unlocked the offer for the $69 air conditioner. Great value. My 1st trip in was to inquire about what I needed done. I met with the owner and he was able to set me up for success. Got the car in after work, and they took it right in. Looked at it and found out what the issue was. Ordered the part and I was on my way. The very next day the part was in and I would be coming back at opening. They put the part on, and it worked! Cold air- no more sweating to death in the car. So friendly the whole time. I am totally telling everyone. Between the friendliness, great work, and just getting the car fixed, I couldn't be happier.

Got a few lugnuts broken after a tire rotation. Eddie at Orozco's was friendly and helpful and gave a detailed description of the work that would be needed. The repair job was done efficiently and my car was ready to go the following morning. Great job.
