It was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 16. Make sure to reach the top early so you get enough time to soak in views of the surrounding forts and dams. The rules suggest you leave by 5 pm. On your way back, you can treat yourself to lip-smacking Maharashtrian food at the Velhe Village at the base.

Salher Fort, Nashik

Salher Fort Nashik

Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 5,140ft; Best time to visit: August to February

The most celebrated forts of the Maratha Empire and the second-highest peak in Maharashtra, the pyramid-shaped Salher fort can be scaled from one of three villages— Waghambe, Salher or Maldar. Similar to Prabalgad, the trails are slippery and the carved steps are tricky to climb but the trek makes for a memorable adventure. The Salher even has a twin fort right across called the Salota Fort. The two are separated by a saddle (the low point between two peaks). The highest point of the summit has a Parshuram temple.

Harishchandragad, Ahmednagar

Harishchandragad Ahmednagar

Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 1,424ft; Best time to visit: August to February

Out of the many routes up Harishchandragad, the Khireshwar route or Pachnai is the safest in the monsoons. Walk across the paddy fields and Pimpalgaon Joga Dam, past the small caves to reach the top of the fort where you can enjoy a nice meal and watch the sun disappear behind two valleys. Visibility could be an issue closer to the top but the metal railings and ladders ensure your safety. Don’t forget to take pictures from the Konkan Kada (cliff), where you can sometimes see a circular rainbow.

Jivdhan Fort, Pune

Jivdhan Fort Pune

Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 3,757ft; Best time to visit: August to February

Perched near the town of Ghatghar in Pune, the hill fortress of Jivdhan has challenged trekkers in more ways than one. When you embark on this trail, you would need to have a guide to navigate through the jungle. You also need appropriate climbing equipment to make the steep climb to the pinnacle. Less experienced climbers would have to make their way to the Kalyan gate to use the carved rock steps with hooks attached to the walls to assist the climb. The fort comprises unexplored storage units, water tanks and cisterns, and offers compelling views of Harishchandragad, Chavaand, Ratangad, Naneghat forts.

Harihar Fort, Nashik

Harihar Fort Nashik

Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 3,676ft; Best time to visit: June to August

The Harihar Fort is built in an extremely unique location which contributes to its challenge. It’s built on a triangular prism rock with a vertical inclination of 90°. In order to reach the fort, you are required to ascend 117 stairs, walk below an overhang with a sheer drop and climb up another narrow staircase. At the entrance, you will see the plateau with a small raised level. The plateau includes small idols of Lords Hanuman, Shiva and Nandi and a quaint pond. Getting to the higher level, we come across a two-room palace that can accommodate approximately 12 people. This palace may not be in its best form but the 360° view of the Sahyadri range peaks makes up for it. Don’t forget to also visit the ‘Scottish Kada’, one of the vertical drops, named after Doug Scott, the mountaineer who first climbed it.

Why is Bhairavgad Trek A Must-Do For All The Trekkers?

Bhairavgad view from start point

The Bhairavgad fort trek is one of the most challenging treks in Maharashtra. It is on the bucket list of every experienced trekker.

We all have seen & been mesmerised by the scary Instagram reels of the trek. It is a hill fort in a dike formation & is nearly 3000 years old. It held strategic importance and acted as a watchtower for the trading routes of the surrounding region. There are different names for the fort, like ‘Moroshi Bhairavagad’ or ‘Moroshiche Bhairavgad’, as the base village of this trek is Moroshi.

It lies near Malshej ghat, in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra. Once you reach the top, you can easily see the famous forts of Alang, Madan, Kulang, Harishchandragad, Rohida, Naneghat, Malshej Ghat and Jivdhan.

  • Base Village:  Moroshi
  • Altitude:  3,465 ft.
  • Difficulty:  Very Difficult
  • Best Season:  Winter (November – February)

Trek Route & Difficulty

Bhairavgad Rock Cut Step Patch

Bhairavgad is one of Maharashtra’s most strenuous treks, and only experienced trekkers should attempt it.

The trek distance one way is approximately 5kms and will take around 3-4 hours to complete, with breaks in between.

The trek starts from the National Highway itself; once you reach the start point, you can see a main entry gate for the hike.  Click here to see the start point on Google Maps .

There are two distinct parts of the trek: From the start point to Machi & then from Machi to the fort.

Start Point to Machi:

The first part of the trail is through a forest, and there are various diversions on the route; hence there is a slight possibility of getting lost; however, if you have a guide, this should be fine. This part of the trek is relatively easy but requires good stamina as there are some steep ascends on the trail. It will take around 2 hours to reach the Bhairavmachi from the start.

Machi to the top of the fort:

This part of the trek is tricky yet very thrilling. One needs to be very focused on the rock-cut steps as the steps are very small and are more exposed and steep. At the halfway point, there is a small cave where you can rest for a while; till this point, you will not require any ropes. However, after this comes to the overhang patch, where there are no steps and the rock curves out, making it difficult to get a grip on the wall. It is necessary to have an experienced trekker or a guide who can help you with the ropes and climb this patch. The last section of the trek has tiny steps again; after you finish, you reach the top. The top of the fort is like a ridge, and it’s a minimal area; hence camping and staying here for a long duration is impossible. The tricky part is descending again on the same rock steps; you should be very careful while going down. It would help if you took your time and went down at a slow and easy pace.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: Remote hamlet gets polling station for first time in Maharashtra, registers 95 pc turnout

Amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024 , a remote hamlet Burudmal under Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra registered a 95 per cent turnout on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.

Nonagenarian Baburao Akhade was among 41 eligible voters from the remote hamlet Burudmal under Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra who for the first time didn't have to trek 12 km to cast their votes, which was the case until 2019 elections, reported PTI.

Voting was held for 11 of 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 on Tuesday. This is the first time that officials established a polling station in a nearby school for eligible electors enabling us to take part in the festival of democracy- elections, in our hamlet.

Located 35 km away from Bhor town in Velhe tehsil of Pune district , Burudmal is the smallest polling station with 41 eligible voters under the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. By 3 pm on Tuesday, 39 voters, including a first-timer, had exercised their franchise, registering a 95 per cent turnout, reported PTI.

"This has happened for the first time in our lifetime that a polling station has been set up near our houses here in Burudmal. Till the last elections, we all had to go on foot to Sangvi Velvade Khore (valley) to cast votes, which is almost 12 km from here,"90-year-old Akhade, the senior-most voter among the flock, told PTI.

But this time, a polling station was set up in a school, located just next to our houses, giving us much-required comfort in the scorching summer heat, he said.

A youngster, Mahesh Gore claimed this is for the first time after Independence that a polling station was established in the hamlet.

"Earlier, we used to trek and cross two rivers on a boat to reach the polling station, which was 12-km away. Voters, including senior citizens and women, used to find it difficult to get there. Considering all these hardships, we had appealed to the Sub-Divisional Officer, Bhor division, to set up a polling station. The administration acted swiftly. Today, 40 of the 41 voters exercised their franchise here," he told PTI.

According to villagers, the population of Burudmal is 150 and most of the young residents work in Mumbai. "But more than 20 voters hired a bus from Maharashtra's capital city and reached Burudmal just to cast their votes," they said. Priyanka Akhade, who works in Mumbai was part of the group, told PTI, "I am voting for the first time. I am very fortunate that I could vote in the polling station in my village."

Another voter, Laxman Akhade, said he was feeling very happy for his 90-year-old father who got the chance to cast his vote in his hamlet. "Since the government provided us the polling station, we showed our commitment by doing 100 per cent voting," he told PTI. Bhausaheb Turkunde, a lone teacher who works at the Zilla Parishad primary school in Burudmal, said the terrain is difficult.

"Most of the times, people living here had to trek to nearby villages to bring goods but a motorable road has been built now," he said.

Rajendra Kachare, sub-divisional officer, told PTI that they were moved by the determination of villagers to participate in the voting process.

"As per the guidance from our returning officer (for Baramati constituency) Kavita Dwivedi, a polling station was set up here. 95 per cent of voters cast their franchise at the polling station," he told PTI.
