When you hear about Annecy , the first thing that comes to your mind is this postcard image: the lake’s translucent water reflecting the mountains surrounding it. It’s really the #1 tourist attraction in town.

For sure, Lake Annecy (Lac d’Annecy in French) is the first thing you will want to see when you arrive, so let’s start your trip in Annecy by a small walk on the lake’s shore. You will finally be able to see the crystal clear, lagoon like water and the beauty of the place by yourself!

You can for example start your stroll starting from Paquier , the huge lawn boarding the lake, and go on the right to the Jardins de l’Europe (Gardens of Europe).

With this itinerary, you will go through one of the top places in Annecy, the Pont des Amours (lover’s bridge), with, like the one in Paris, has “love locks” tied to it.

The jardins de l’Europe are very nice for the lake view of course, but also for the huge and magnificent multi centennial trees you can find there.

On the other side of Paquier (left side), you can go to the Imperial Palace gardens, for sure the most luxurious hotel in Annecy .

It’s located at the border of Annecy’s adjacent town, Annecy le Vieux, which, despite it’s name, is not and shouldn’t be confused with the old town of Annecy.

You can keep going on the lake shore to find a beach as well as the starting point for many nautical activities to do on the lake. I will tell you everything about them a bit later in the article.

Lake Annecy

A cool way to discover the place is to choose a Segway stroll, a nice activity to do on Lake Annecy shore . Even if you have never tried before, it’s a great place to start as the area around the lake is a pedestrian only area.

Trips are offered from 30 minutes (around 17€ per person) to 2 hours (around 55€ per person). It can be a great activity to do with your family!

I strongly recommend you to book your Segway tour in advance. It’s more convenient, as you can do it directly online by clicking here.

The sportier will for sure enjoy to do a bike ride around Lake Annecy.

There is around 42km of bike path, it’s really a great way to discover the surroundings. You will of course need to stop a few times to admire the view! it’s also the best way to find some places without too much people, especially in summer.

It’s very simple, just click on the button below! Bike rental starts from 18€ a day only, so it would be a shame not to take advantage of it:

Bike Annecy

For those with an adventurous spirit and big thrills enthusiasts , I strongly recommand you to book a paragliding session above Lake Annecy .

The view is just crazy, no wonder why Annecy is the most famous paragliding site in Europe , and one of the best in the world!

Many companies are providing this service, starting from 95€ for 15/20 minutes . You can even chose if you want a big thrill acrobatic flight or something calmer.

The paragliding session usually starts from Forclaz pass (col de Forclaz in french) or the small town of Talloires and it should be booked in advance. Doing paragliding in Annecy is the best way to discover this sport!

For me, it’s a really a “must do” tourist attraction in Annecy.

The best paragliding session in Annecy can easily be booked online by clicking the button below.

As it’s the most popular activity to do in Annecy , you need to book it as soon as possible , else there are good chances that it will be fully booked.

Doing paragliding in Annecy

To discover Lake Annecy and its surroundings from another angle, you should go on the lake itself!

To do so, you have several options.

For example, you can rent a pedal boat (about 12€ per half hour) or a motor boat without license (starting from 30€ per half hour). Don’t forget to book it in advance, as Annecy is very touristy during summer.

If you want to discover Lake Anny by boat while eating a good lunch or diner , you can also take the restaurant boat “Libellule” from Annecy.

There are 2 departures per day , one at 12h and the other at 20h. The round trip takes around 2h30. For 65€, you will have the mini cruise and a 3 courses menu (starter, main course, dessert).

The Annecy boat company also offers commented cruises lasting from 1 to 2 hours. You can find more information on the official website (in French).

If you want to enjoy Lake Annecy on a boat far from the other tourists , you should opt for a private boat trip!

You will rent a boat with a skipper that will take care of showing you the best spots of the lake.

The great thing is that you can choose the type of boat you prefer and then simply relax and enjoy a perfect day!

As you can imagine, this type of VIP day on Lake Annecy is extremely popular, so you should rent your boat with skipper as soon as possible . It would be a shame to miss this day because all boats are already rented!

And if you have a boat license, you can simply rent a boat by clicking here to enjoy the lake for the whole day and go where you want!

If you are looking for what to do in Annecy , enjoying the numerous nautical activities can be a good choice!

My favorite adrenaline pumping activities on the lake are for sure water-skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing.

Even if you’re a beginner, no problem, they will teach you the basics and make sure you enjoy your session!

To book, simply click on the button below:

And if you’re looking for something more relaxing, renting a stand up paddle is my favorite way to explore a part of Lake Annecy. It really feels great to paddle on this beautiful lake surrounded by mountains.

You need to click here to book your board.

Of course just go swim or get a tan in one of Lake Annecy beaches!

water skiing Annecy

In addition to the lake, the city of Annecy is also famous for it’s beautiful old town and the main canal going through it. That’s why the town is also known as the Venice of the Alps (la Venise des Alpes in french). It’s really one of the highlights of the city.

With it’s cobbled streets and arches, the Annecy old town is for sure a must-see!

It’s the place where you can take the famous picture with “l’écluse fleurie ” (the flower tidegate on the Thiou canal) or the palais de l’Isle (Isle palace), located between 2 canals.

Don’t hesitate to wander in the small alleys and to follow the canal along the Louis-Lachenal promenade .

With many areas in the shade, it’s a very nice small walk to do in summer when it’s very warm!

It’s also in Annecy old town that you can find most of the city’s restaurants (touristy, but some of them are very good), as well as all the small souvenirs shop where you can buy local things as well as the superb (a bit of irony maybe!) placemat with the picture of the lake.

You will also find some typical french shops with amazing Haute-Savoie cold cuts and cheese.

About awesome local food , if you are lucky enough to be in Annecy on tuesday, friday or sunday morning, you should definitely go to the old town market.

It takes place next to the canal, and don’t hesitate to bargain a bit on local products : Maybe you will get a free dry sausage if you buy a few!

Annecy old town

Taking a stroll in Annecy old town streets is nice, but doing so while eating the best ice cream in town is even better! Yep, there is an excellent ice cream shop in Annecy: Le glacier des Alpes .

It’s even considered to be one of the best in France. They offer more than 45 flavours, so the hardest part is to chose and stay reasonable!

Annecy is also the perfect place to eat a good tartiflette , croziflette (quite similar to tartiflette, but made with crozets, pasta from Savoie), cheese fondue , diots de Savoie (sausages) or, of course, fishes from the lake like perch, trout or arctic char.

You like wine and cheese?

In that case, you should really participate to this tasting workshop led by a sommelier and a Master Cheesemaker of France , no less!

During the workshop, you will taste 5 wines accompanied each time by a different cheese (Tomme, Beaufort and Reblochon among others!).

You need to book this activity in Annecy by clicking here.

glacier des alpes Annecy

Another thing to see in Annecy is the Castle museum. It’s located at the top of the small hill and you can easily walk there from the old town.

For adults, the entrance price is 5.5€. At this price, you will be able to visit the château d’Annecy as well as the temporary exhibitions. It takes around 1h to visit, but let’s be frank: the view from the castle is the main interest!

Annecy Castle

If you’re lucky enough to be in Annecy during summer, you will for sure want to take a dip in the beautiful crystal clear waters of the lake!

Here are the best beaches in Annecy and around the lake:

  • The beach of the Imperial , on the Avenue d’Albigny. Paid beach.
  • Marquisats beach , on the west bank of the lake. Free of charge.
  • Albigny beach , the largest beach on Lake Annecy. Free access, in Annecy-le-Vieux.
  • The 2 beaches of Sevrier
  • Saint-Jorioz beach , featuring a diving board, pontoons and toilets/showers + first-aid post. Paid beach in summer.
  • Angon beach , a well-shaded beach crossed by a stream. Private beach.
  • Talloires beach where there is a paddling pool, ideal for small children. Paid beach.
  • Menthon Saint-Bernard beach with playground, volleyball and petanque courts. Paid beach.

In addition to paragliding (which needs to be booked here! ), you can also do :

  • Hang gliding, to feel even more like flying like a bird! From 95€ for a discovery flight.
  • A glider flight , from 180€. The departure is from Albertville, 45 minutes from Annecy. Flying over the mountains in total silence is truly an unforgettable experience!
  • Canyoning: you can choose between several formulas and different canyons on O’Speed Canyoning website. They are open all year round and also offer Ice Canyoning sessions in winter!
  • A Via Ferrata trail , to explore the cliffs and mountains!
  • An introduction to rock climbing
  • A downhill mountain bike session, at Semnoz for an adrenaline rush!
  • A hot-air balloon flight above Lake Annecy to enjoy a magnificent view
  • A flight in a two-seater helicopter to live a unique experience
  • A ride on an electric skateboard on the shores of Lake Annecy
  • Tree climbing, a great activity to enjoy with your family during your stay in Annecy!

And if you wonder what to do in Annecy in winter , you can maybe try snowshoeing . These 4 to 7 hours hikes are a great way to discover the snowy landscapes around Annecy! You can enjoy snowshoeing from December to March.

You can find more information about this activity by clicking here.

As I was telling you earlier, Annecy’s nickname is “the Venice of the Alps”, because of the canals you can see in the old town.

But Annecy borrowed something else from the famous Italian city: it’s famous carnival!

Every year, generally at the beginning of march , hundreds of people dressed with magnificent costumes parade in the street. Several activities related to make-up or masks creations can be done in Annecy during the Venetian Carnival.

A very beautiful tourist attraction!

Venetian Carnival Annecy

The international Animated Film Festival takes place every year in June in Annecy .

Professionals of the industry from all other the world are showcasing their movies, ranging from 3D animated graphics to traditional animations and some very original creation (stop motion clay based animation, Chinese shadows theatre etc…).

A great thing about this festival is that every evening, a movie  projection is organised on the Paquier lawn , and everyone can enjoy it!

If you are lucky enough to be doing your trip to Annecy at this period, it’s really perfect for an evening with the kids (or without !)

Annecy International Animated Film Festival

Another must-see for locals and tourists is the Annecy Lake Festival . This amazing pyrotechnic show takes place every year on the first Saturday of August and is the biggest in Europe .

Fireworks are shot off from Lake Annecy and stands are built everywhere around Paquier so everyone can enjoy it. There are around 46 000 paid seats, but of course, you can view it from anywhere!

Anyway, a good advice et to hunt for a good viewing spot quite early , as the show attracts more than 100 000 spectators every year. You can imagine that the best spots are taken quite fast!

For more info and seat booking, you can have a look a Annecy official website (in french) .

Annecy lake Festival

After visiting Annecy, you will probably want to discover the surroundings. Here are the 5 best things to do around Annecy:

15. Going for a hike around Annecy

Considering Annecy is located at the heart of the French Alps , one of the top thing to do is to go for a hike in the mountains surrounding the city. Here are a few of my favorites:

it’s the easiest hike around Annecy . Take your car, and go to the top of the Semnoz, there is lots of parking places. From there, you will have amazing viewpoints on the lake and moutains surrounding it.

In summer , you will be able to do a few hikes as well as mountain bike in the high mountain pastures, and in winter , you can enjoy sledge, ski and snowshoe.

If you want to get some thrills, I strongly advice you to book your downhill mountain bike session at Semnoz, it’s amazing! (No previous experience needed!)

This hike starts from the town of Annecy le Vieux and Veyrier. You can walk for a few hours without major difficulties and you will be protected from the heat in summer as most of the paths are in the forest.

The great part of this hike is that you will benefit from an amazing view on all Lake Annecy.

It’s also possible to go directly next to the top of Mount Verrier with a car , by the “col des contrebandiers”. You will then have to do a short walk to go to the lake viewpoints.

For a short walk with a nice view on the lake , I suggest you to follow the signs to the “Talabar” , a small meadow with one the best views of Annecy.

This hike around Annecy is for experienced hikers , as the last part is quite hard, with chains, cables, ladders and quite slippery rocks. From there, you will have a great view on the lake as well as the Mont Blanc.

Properly speaking, this is not a hike, but rather a short walk in a nice natural site at about 10km from Annecy.

Result of the water erosion on rocks, the 25m deep gorges du Fier can be visited thanks to the footbridges installed all along the torrent. At the end of the walk, don’t miss the “sea of rocks”.

The site is closed from October to March and is then open everyday. The ticket price is 5.70€ for adults and the visit takes around 1 hour.

Hike Annecy

Around the lake of Annecy, you can also visit some charming villages, among which:

  • Annecy-le-Vieux: not to be confused with the “Vieil Annecy”, which is the old town! There, you will find the beach of Albigny and the restaurant “Le clos des sens”, 3 stars in the Michelin Guide.
  • Veyrier du lac, 5 km from Annecy, located at the foot of Mont Veyrier, a popular place for its hiking trails offering superb views over Lake Annecy
  • Menthon Saint Bernard , which houses a magnificent 12th century castle that you can visit. You can find more information here
  • Talloires, located in a small bay of lake Annecy, is a very photogenic village that inspired Paul Cézanne for his painting “The blue lake”.
  • Duingt , a village known for its 2 castles
  • Saint Jorioz, where you will find the only sandy beach of lake Annecy.

The first place you can visit near Annecy is Geneva. This famous swiss city is located only 30 minutes away from Annecy , close to the French border.

Like the city of Annecy, it’s situated on the shores of a large lake : Lake Geneva .

Here are the best places to visit in Geneva:

  • The old town , featuring a few must-see tourist attractions, such as St Peter’s Cathedral of Geneva.
  • The Jet d’eau, symbol of the city
  • The Parc de la Grange and the Parc des Eaux-vives, on the edge of the lake
  • A stroll next to the lake or a cruise on Lake Geneva .

If you want to visit Geneva, you should read my detailed article: The 23 best things to do in Geneva .

Jet d'Eau Geneva

You prefer to discover the mountains around Annecy ?

No problem!

Let’s head to Chamonix and the Mont-Blanc , only 1h10 away. It’s in my opinion one of the best places to visit around Annecy!

First, you should take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to discover an exceptional view over the entire Mont-Blanc massif.

Then opt for a ride on a rack train to reach the largest French glacier: the “Mer de Glace” . There, you can visit the famous Ice Cave and its collection of ice sculptures.

And if you want to discover amazing winter sports, you should try one of these 2 activities:

  • An introduction to winter mountaineering in Chamonix
  • Climbing an Icefall : A winter sport you should try at least once in your life!

No matter what you plan to do, you should end the day with a good Savoyard dish at a restaurant in Chamonix. Tartiflette, croziflette, fondue, local cheese… You will have lots of things to try!

aiguille du Midi

Still on the shores of Lake Geneva, you should visit:

  • Yvoire, a pretty medieval village listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. You will be able to discover its castle and small local craft shops.
  • Evian-les-Bains, a small but world famous town known for its mineral water . The walk in the centre and along the lake is very pleasant.

Yvoire

If you have only 1 day to visit Annecy , you will have to make concessions! To make the most out of your day in the Venice of the Alps, I recommend you the following things to do :

  • For a good start, take a stroll on Lake Annecy shore
  • Then go to Annecy old town to see the canals and Annecy castle museum
  • For the lunch, you can eat something in the old town (the famous local “tartiflette” if it’s not too hot!) and finish with one of the amazing ice cream from the Glacier des Alpes
  • In the afternoon, you should try to do one of the nautical activities available on Lake Annecy like wakeboard , water ski, paddle boat or stand up paddle!
  • To end your day in style, go for a paragliding session and enjoy the amazing view of Annecy from the sky!

In 2 days in Annecy , you will have the time to go for one of the nice hikes you can do in the mountains around the city!

In addition to the 1st day program, I suggest you to go to the Semnoz and maybe do this hike (in French) that offers a superb view on the lake.

For the most adventurous among you, the La Tournette hike is a great alternative to have a memorable day!

If you choose a short hike, you can finish the day at the beach , next to Annecy le Vieux and enjoy the lake’s crystal clear water.

And if you want to do something fun at Semnoz, the downhill mountain biking session is really awesome! You need to book it here.

Y si quieres hacer algo divertido en Semnoz, la sesión de ciclismo de montaña es realmente impresionante. Tienes que reservarlo aquí.

if you have 3 days in Annecy , you will have the time to go around the lake and maybe spend one night in of the the small towns like Talloires or Menthon-Saint-Bernard.

Take the opportunity to do a few pictures of the castle of Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Depending on the day and season, you can even visit it (more info on their website )

Another very photogenic place is Duingt castle , on the other side of the lake.

And if you are visiting the region with friends, why not go for example do some tree climbing in an adventure park or paintball in the forest , near Annecy?

I f you would like to know more about special events in Annecy or just get a tourist map, you should go to the Annecy tourist information center.

My husband and I spent a few nights in Annecy at the beginning of September of 2019. Besides the fairytale-like charm of the town and the wonderful pastries, my favorite memory is the outside dance by the lake with a live band. Someone told me they do it every Sunday evening in the summer. I’m thinking of going a little later in September, and I’m wondering if the dance continues into September. Do you know? Thank you.

Vincent

Hello Bonnie,

I can’t tell you if this type of show will be offered in September. It’s a bit too far away. Perhaps you can send a message to the Annecy tourist office. They might be able to tell you about the events to come this year.

Have a nice trip to Annecy!

After a good walk up to the Mont Veyrier, you're rewarded by this astonishing view! Even better at sunset or by night :)

Nestled by the northwestern shore of its namesake lake, Annecy is the jewel of the Haute-Savoie. From its crowning Château d’Annecy down to its gurgling canals, Annecy’s Vieille Ville (Old Town) is infused with antique charm. Made great by the medieval Counts of Geneva and augmented by the Dukes of Savoy, Annecy still has numerous 16th- and 17th-century buildings, now painted in shades of peach and rose and housing restaurants, bakeries and boutiques. Canals trickle through town, earning Annecy its reputation as an 'Alpine Venice'.

15 Best Things to Do in Annecy (France)

One of France’s prettiest medieval towns is right on the shore of Europe’s cleanest lake. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Annecy is laced with canals and the historic streets have fun passageways darting off to the sides.

The lake is glorious, bordered on all sides by mountains and with crystalline waters that call your name on hot summer days.

Half the time you may lose yourself staring at scenery – Lac d’Annecy has a year-round gossamer haze – but there’s a breathless amount of activities to do and places to see. This is Europe’s outdoor sports capital after all.

Lets explore the best things to do in Annecy :

1. Lac d’Annecy

Lac d'Annecy

Whatever your reason for coming to Annecy, “Europe’s Cleanest Lake” will be in your plans.

Lake Annecy has the quality of staying peaceful at all times of year despite all the activity on its shores If you come in summer you can’t be blamed for passing hours lazing by the transparent waters at one of several beaches around the shore, in awe of the Alpine landscapes.

Two beaches, Plage la Brune at Veyrier-du-Lac and Plage Municipal in Saint-Jorioz, have earned the Blue Flag for the undeniable quality of the water and the facilities like restaurants, play areas and lifeguard patrol.

2. Vieille Ville

Vieille Ville

Annecy has earned the eminent French label “Ville d’Art”, and just within its compact old town there are 21 historical monuments to be found.

The medieval core on the Thiou River is extremely pretty, with canals, arcaded pedestrian streets and exciting little passageways that have you fumbling for your camera every few steps.

You could put yourself in the capable hands of a guide for the complete inside track on the city’s history and the unexpected vestiges that constantly catch your attention.

On Tuesday there’s a food market in the old centre, which adds real colour and energy to the old streets.

3. Jardins de l’Europe

Jardins de l'Europe

It’s hard to conceive of a municipal park blessed with better panoramas anywhere in the world.

The Jardins del’Europe are in front of Annecy’s city hall, and before the embankment and Vassé canal were built had actually been a marshy island outside the city.

In the 19th century the city plotted an English garden, and more than 600 deciduous trees were planted around the statue of the pioneering chemist Claude-Louis Berthollet.

In any weather you have to walk down to the water, sit back on a bench and feast your eyes on the peaks around the lake, out to La Tournette high above the southeast shore.

4. Pont Des Amours

Pont Des Amours

There are many picturesque bridges in Annecy, but when it comes to scenery none can compete with this one on the lakeside.

Pont des Amours spans the Vassé canal and connects the Jardins de l’Europe with the Jacquet Promenade, a walkway blessed with yet more sumptuous views of the lake and mountains.

The story goes that any lovers who kiss while on the bridge will be together for life.

The mountain vistas make it a very romantic spot, but you should also look back towards the city along the canal, which is flanked by trees and has charming jetties where small boats are moored.

5. Palais de l’Île

Palais de l'Île

You won’t be the first person to have stood on Pont Perrière for a photo of this fortified palace in the middle of the Thiou, but you have to do it anyway.

Although it has been rebuilt several times in its extensive history, the complex dates to the 1100s and for hundreds of years it was a residence handed down the noble families of the County  of Geneva.

From the 17th century the palace became a prison, and then after the Revolution it had many different functions, as a home for veterans, a warehouse and barracks.

Today it contains exhibitions about Annecy’s architecture and heritage, and you can take a look around the old courtroom, dungeon, cells and chapel.

6. Cathedral and Basilica

Saint-Pierre Cathedra

Saint-Pierre Cathedral is also admired for the way it interacts with the water, and is partly built over the canals.

Saint-Pierre is a lovely renaissance building, constructed in the 1500s, and if it seems a bit subtle for a cathedral that’s because it wasn’t made one until 1825. Make the steep walk up to the Basilique de la Visitation, high to the south of Annecy.

The tower of this 19th-century church can be seen for miles around and possesses one of the best local views of the city.

Inside are the tombs of two saints, Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal.

7. Château d’Annecy

Château d'Annecy

The seat of the Counts of Geneva, Château d’Annecy dates to between the 12th and 16th centuries, and there are a few good reasons to climb the steep hill up to this building.

You can spend a while pottering around the castle’s towers and halls, and there’s a museum giving you a window on the lifestyle of the itinerant rulers of Savoy.

Poke through the large displays of medieval furniture, beds, chest chairs and tables, as well as more precious illuminated manuscripts.

A lot of visitors opt not to enter the château and instead admire one of the definitive views of Annecy from the terrace.

8. Gorges du Fier

Gorges du Fier

Minutes west of the city is a marvellous river canyon cut by the Fier River.

Even in the French Alps, which are famous for their natural wonders, the gorge is a must-visit.

That’s down to how accessible it is: There’s a series of walkway suspended 25 metres above the river letting you marvel at the odd shapes create by many years of erosion.

In places the gorge is so narrow that the cliffs almost meet overhead, and you’ll be able to touch the rock face on the other side.

There’s also a free path delivering you to a natural pool where people come to sunbathe and swim in the summer.

9. Château de Montrottier

Château de Montrottier

Combine your trip to the Gorges du Fier with this castle, which looks down on the river.

Château de Montrottier dates to the 13th century and is open during the summer months.

The architecture is impressive, with a tall circular tower dominating the landscape.

But the big story here is the collection of Léon Mares, who was a 19th-century explorer and prolific collector.

Mares hoarded priceless items from around the world and when he passed on specified that he wanted the collection to be presented exactly as he left it.

So the 90-minute tour shows you round masses of historic tapestries, antique weapons, armour, period furniture, ceramics, glassware and the many items he acquired while travelling Asia and Africa.

10. Winter Sport

La Clusaz

Annecy is close enough to resorts like Manigod, La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand and Saint Jean de Sixt to make it a ski destination.

If you want a more cultured base than a typical village, Annecy is a beautiful place to return to after a day on the slopes and isn’t more than 45 minutes from any of the local ski areas.

They’re all at low altitudes and well-suited to families and newcomers: Manigod for example has 17 kilometres  of wide and an easy slopes, while Le Semnoz offers short-term lift passes by the hour or day, which obviously makes things a lot more flexible.

Highest-rate of all is La Clusaz, with the most challenging runs of all the resorts around Annecy.

11. Watersports

Lake Annecy

A big directory of companies awaits your business at Lake Annecy in the summer, providing almost any watersport under the warm July sun.

Just to reel off the list, there’s waterskiing and wakeboarding for people who need high-speed, motorised exhilaration.

But you can also push off onto these glistening waters on a paddle-boarding adventure or, if you’re really sure of yourself, try open water swimming.

Due to the easy learning curve paddle-boarding is now a hit with families.

Best of all it gives you an opportunity to look up every now and take in those views .

12. Hiking and Cycling

Le Taillefer

Around the lakeshore are a load of viewpoints with spellbinding vistas of the lake and mountains.

Getting up to these lookouts is a joy too, as you ramble through upland pasture, orchards and woodland.

Here’s a few to seek out: Le Taillefer, the Semnoz Plateau, the Laudon Circuit, the Oratory in Entrevernes and the La Frasse Pass.

All are achievable for families and you only need a pair of good shoes.

Lake Annecy also has the ultimate greenway for cyclists, starting in the city, running down the lake’s east shore and ending up in Marlens in the Fauverges Valley 35 kilometres away.

13. Local Food

Emmental de Savoie

Annecy is cheese heaven as the city is in four designated production areas:  Gruyère, Emmental de Savoie , Emmental français est-central and Tomme de Savoie.

And if you’re really curious about cheese you could track down  rural shops Ferme de l’Angelie and Fromagerie du Cruet selling their cheese on the farm premises, along with homemade jams and sausage.

A lot of freshwater fishers make their living around the lake and anchor their boats in the Vassé: The arctic char, perch and trout that they catch could be on your plate at one of Annecy’s fine restaurants on the same day.

14. Aix-les-Bains

Aix-les-Bains

An easy road trip southwest of Annecy is this spa town on the shore of Lac du Bourget, founded by the Romans and wildly popular with Europe’s wealthy in the 19th century.

They came to take the health-giving waters, and during this time fitted Aix-les-Bains with grand Belle Époque hotels, townhouses and a casino.

Whether you feel like gambling, or just to gaze awestruck at the art nouveau interiors, you need to call in at the Casino Grand Cercle.

If you need cosseting after your outdoor excursions at Lake Annecy, Aix-les-Bains is still a top-class spa resort with pools and saunas, and all the restorative treatments you could hope for.

15. Chambéry

Chambéry

Push on a bit further to reach this exquisite Alpine town, with an old centre  that you can’t resist exploring.

The medieval buildings, tight passageways and renaissance arcades have survived the years, but what’s great is that they’re part of a working town, and not kept like museum pieces.

The major sight is the Fontaine des Éléphants, dedicated to Benoît de Boigne, a Napoleonic military man who helped train and lead the Maratha Empire against the British in India.

The Château de Chambéry was another in the roll call of palaces belonging to the Counts of Savoy, and is still a regional government building, but open for tours.

Best time to visit, how to get there, getting around.

Winding canals have made Venice one of Italy’s most famous tourism darlings. However, many other destinations across Europe also have scenic waterways. You’ve likely heard of Giethoorn, affectionately known as the “ Venice of the Netherlands .” But what about Annecy? This atmospheric mountain town settled at the tip of Lake Annecy in southeastern France lures travelers with its charming old town that’s crossed by canals and bridges — hence its nickname the “Venice of the Alps” — plus heritage-rich landmarks like Château d’Annecy and Palais de I'Île, churches, museums, cafés, cozy bistros, and Michelin-rated restaurants taking alpine cuisine to new heights. It’s also well regarded for stunning scenery — a sparkling lake with sandy beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks — and the nature-oriented outdoor recreation that goes along with all that. Visitors have the choice of staying at boutique hotels, quaint guest houses, and campsites.

Whether you’re planning to stick around Annecy for a while or just stop by as part of a longer trip around the French Alps and maybe even the South of France (it’s less than four hours from Provence), it won’t take long to fall in love with this picture-perfect alpine escape.

Rivage hôtel & spa annecy.

Rivage Hôtel & Spa Annecy occupies a prime position on the lake near several notable attractions. Besides being a convenient home base for exploring, it very much reads like a contemporary retreat with rooms that echo the natural beauty of the area, a pampering spa, and a sophisticated restaurant.

Set in the heart of the old town a 10-minute walk from the lake, Hébé Hotel is a great place to unwind in between sightseeing, shopping, and eating without leaving the city center. The colors used throughout the interiors cue calm vibes while the clean lines, wood floors, and sleek furnishings create a cosmopolitan profile.

Le Pélican

So much of Le Pélican centers around the water. With a privileged perch on the banks of Lake Annecy, why wouldn’t that be the case? The property supplies the perfect vantage point to admire the placid blueness from the terraces. When you do decide to venture inside, comfy rooms and suites are equipped for restful ZZZs.

Hotel Catalpa

Hotel Catalpa is a smart mid-range option that’s steps from the lake and public beach and a short walk from the old town. Inside the stone façade are 52 rooms replete with all the requisite comforts and a dash of French flair. There’s also a restaurant, bar, and terrace.

Best Things to Do

Lake annecy.

One of the largest and most pristine lakes in France, Lake Annecy is fed by pure mountain springs that trickle down from snow-capped peaks. It offers sandy beaches for sunbathing in the warmer months. Watersports are a huge draw for aquatic enthusiasts who have the option of paddleboarding, wakeboarding, scuba diving, and catamaran rentals.

Vieille Ville

Compact and exceedingly pedestrian-friendly, Vieille Ville exudes fairytale charm with cobbled streets, canals, and pastel houses ornamented by flower boxes. It’s the sort of place you don’t mind getting lost. In fact, wandering around — maybe stopping by one of the boulangeries or sitting down at a sidewalk café — is part of the laid-back allure of the old town.

Palais de I'Île

Built on a rocky island way back in the 12th century, Palais de I'Île has served many functions over the years:  a prison, a courthouse, a minting workshop, an administrative building, a gymnasium, and a school for stone carvers. Deservedly listed as a historic monument in 1900, the original medieval structure now plays host to a museum.

Château d’Annecy

Built on a hilltop above town, the storybook Château d’Annecy was home to the Counts of Geneva back in the 13th century. Today, it houses a museum with different sections that display local furniture, sculptures, and art as well as natural science exhibits.

Jardins de l'Europe

While the Gardens of Europe sit on the shore of Lake Annecy, this tree-lined park is a destination in its own right — not just somewhere to pass through in between other waterfront activities. Designed by Henri Porreaux in 1863, this lovely green space provides the ideal spot to relax, whether that’s with an afternoon picnic or a leisurely stroll.

Best Shopping

Annecy farmers market.

The Annecy Farmers Market operates every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday throughout the year. That means no matter what season you decide to visit, there will be an abundance of fresh produce and regional products like salami and cheese up for grabs.

Galeries Lafayette Annecy

The famous French department store Galeries Lafayette (perhaps you’re familiar with the flagship location on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris?) has an outpost in Annecy. It’s the place to go for contemporary and luxury designers, shoes, accessories, items for kids and men, beauty products, and home goods.

Pâtisserie Philippe Rigollot

The first stop for many travelers keen to indulge their sweet tooth while on holiday in Annecy, Pâtisserie Philippe Rigollot is a dessert shop known for its whimsical confectionery. With decadent cakes, scrumptious fruit tarts, and delicate macarons, it’s impossible to pick a favorite.

Chapellerie Pochat

The best souvenirs aren’t knick knacks but rather items that tell a story and have a distinctive sense of place. One of the oldest operating shops in Annecy, Chapellerie Pochat carries on century-old millinery traditions. The shelves are stocked with impeccably handcrafted hats you’ll wear forever.

Fromagerie Pierre Gay

The French know a thing or two about cheese, and Fromagerie Pierre Gay certainly confirms that fact. Established in 1935, this small shop is chock-full of the creamiest, most delectable reblochon, chevrotin, and aged goat tomme.

L'Esquisse

Awarded a coveted Michelin star for its innovative twists on homestyle French alpine cuisine, L'Esquisse draws foodies from near and far. Attention to detail in plating elevates the carefully selected seasonal ingredients and skilled cooking techniques. The entire experience feels upscale yet still soulful and unfussy.

Michelin-rated Cozna draws diners with its accolades that are backed up by the delicious, harvest-driven food and relaxed atmosphere. The menu changes with the season; recent standouts included smoked eel maki with cabbage and mussels, fennel, and buckwheat floating in a seaweed herb sauce.

Racines Annecy

Racines Annecy is an award-winning legacy operation with a modern mindset. Everything starts with the very best ingredients — from milk-fed veal to fresh-picked seasonal produce and herbs. Plates that look like art and, more importantly, taste divine are paired with natural wine.

Le Bistro du Rhone

Featuring deep red booths, colorful pop art, and mood-setting lighting, Le Bistro du Rhone oozes ambiance. The gastro food hits the mark, too. Diners especially praise the venison filet mignon with red wine-poached pear and slow-cooked Iberico pork as well as desserts like brown sugar crème brûlée.

Tête de Cochon

Further evidence that bigger doesn’t mean better, Tête de Cochon is a pint-sized eatery in the heart of Annecy that’s almost always packed thanks to its artful charcuterie boards, raclette tartine, and rich rillettes alongside crusty bread, plus interesting chalkboard-inspired decor and warm, friendly service.

Manfred Gottschalk/Getty Images

Many people think of the French Alps as a winter destination but Annecy proves it’s worth the journey any time of year. The colder season means access to skiable terrain and powder-dusted photo ops. When the temperature warms up, outdoor recreation in the form of lakeside strolls and boating takes center stage. The annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival takes place in June.

Annecy sits just 30 minutes from Chambéry Airport (CMF). Most travelers, however, opt to fly into Geneva Airport (GVA), located about 45 minutes away across the border in Switzerland, because it’s larger and welcomes more international arrivals. Alternatively, if you’re coming from somewhere nearby in France, it might be worth taking the train or bus since Annecy acts as a main hub for the Rhone-Alps region and the stations are conveniently located in the city center.

Annecy is quite walkable, especially the old town and lake shore, and easy to navigate on foot. The Voie Verte, one of the oldest greenways in France, attracts many cyclists. If you’re planning to explore neighboring villages, it’s a good idea to consult the bus and train schedules. It might be worth renting a car.

Palais de l'Ile in Annecy

Annecy's most photographed monument, the 12th-century Palais de l'Île stands on an island in the Canal du Thiou. Tourists will find the best views and photo-ops of the Palais de l'Île on the Pont sur le Thiou (bridge). From this vantage point, the palace appears fortress-like with its sturdy quadrangular construction resembling the bow of a ship.

The Palais de l'Ile first served as a prison, but by the mid-14th century, the palace was instead used as a coin-minting workshop. In the 15th century, the palace became the residence of the Dukes of Savoy and in the 16th century was converted to the Palace of Justice (Law Courts).

Open to the public every day year-round, the Palais de l'Ile now houses a small museum that displays exhibits about the regional architecture. Visitors can also see some of the old prison cells. Guided tours are available.

Musée-Chateau d'Annecy

Perched on a hill above the town, the Musée-Château d'Annecy affords stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The castle was built in phases from the medieval to the Renaissance period. During the 13th and 14th century, the Counts of Geneva resided here.

Today, the château's museum covers a wide range of disciplines, including regional history, medieval sculpture, landscape painting, and contemporary art. There are also temporary exhibits throughout the year.

The Musée-Château d'Annecy is open every day year-round, except for holidays and Tuesdays. Guided tours are available.

Blooming flowers along Lac d'Annecy

The Lac d'Annecy beckons visitors with its unspoiled alpine beauty and myriad of recreational opportunities. This shimmering expanse of crystal-clear waters is considered the cleanest lake in Europe, plus the scenery is sublime. Snow-dusted mountain peaks provide an inspiring backdrop for walking, cycling , sunbathing, swimming , and boating .

The main beach of Annecy Lake is the Plage d'Albigny (Avenue du Petit Port), which has a spacious grassy area for sunbathing and a path for walking or cycling. Albigny Beach is immaculately manicured, with flowers and plants bordering the lawn. This beach has public restrooms and showers, as well as a picnic area . Lakeside staircases allow easy access for swimming. In July and August, lifeguards are on duty from 11am until 7pm.

Next to the Plage d'Albigny within the Parc Charles-Bosson, the Plage de l'Impérial (Avenue d'Albigny) attracts many visitors for relaxation and outdoor activities. The shoreline is a mixture of grass and fine sand. Well equipped with facilities, the Plage de l'Impérial includes a restaurant, picnic area, badminton courts, ping-pong tables, and beach volleyball courts .

Families with kids appreciate the Impérial Beach for its wading pool, playground, mini-golf course, and children's games. During the high season, lifeguards are on duty.

Rue Sainte-Claire in Annecy

Near the Palais de l'Île, the Rue Sainte-Claire is the place to go in Annecy for shopping and dining. One of the town's main streets, the lively Rue Sainte-Claire is brimming with old-world charm. Arcaded townhouses dating from the 16th to 18th century have retained their historic character. Some of the houses feature lovingly tended flower-bedecked windowsills.

The arcaded area of the street's townhouses is filled with upscale retail stores, trendy cafés, fancy ice-cream shops, and gourmet dining establishments. Tourists will enjoy browsing the boutiques, grabbing a gelato, taking a coffee break, or stopping for a meal at one of the quaint restaurants.

Eglise Saint-Maurice

Designated as a historical monument, the Eglise Saint-Maurice is the oldest church in Annecy. This 15th-century church was formerly a chapel for the Dominican convent. By the 19th century, the building became the town's parish church.

The church exterior reveals distinctive Flamboyant Savoyard architectural elements, while the interior expresses a more somber ambience. The impressively vast nave was designed in the typical style of Dominican churches to accommodate a large congregation.

Noteworthy works of art include the elaborately carved pulpit from the 18th century and a painting of the Virgin in Glory.

The church continues to host religious services and is open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Place Saint-Maurice, Annecy

Cathedrale Saint-Pierre

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is reached from a narrow side street and is somewhat hidden from view, but it merits taking the time to discover. Built between 1535 and 1538, this church became the cathedral of the Bishops of Geneva, who sought refuge in Annecy during the Protestant Reformation.

The harmonious proportions of Italian Renaissance architecture distinguish the building's exterior, in particular the Tuscan pilasters. Gothic style predominates in the cathedral's interior, with the exception of the Neoclassical choir, which dates to the 18th century. An exquisite rose window and three other stained-glass windows illuminate the sanctuary.

Since 1822, the church has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Annecy.

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Annecy

Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge)

In an idyllic setting beneath a canopy of leafy trees, the fittingly named "Lovers' Bridge" spans the Canal du Vassé that flows from the Lac d'Annecy. This arched ironwork bridge seems to inspire romance with its majestic lakeside scenery.

The Pont des Amours is a popular spot for photo-ops, especially for engagement and wedding portraits. A short walk away from the bridge is the Jardins de l'Europe park.

Champs de Mars

This seven-hectare Champs de Mars borders the Lac d'Annecy and the Jardins de l'Europe, so the views are superb. The Champs de Mars is also known as "le Pâquier" ("pasturage" in the local dialect) because domestic animals once came to graze here.

Nowadays, this expansive green space is a favorite spot for locals to enjoy picnics and recreational activities on sunny days. Several paved cycling paths traverse the Champs de Mars.

Families with young kids will have fun at the Champs de Mars. Children love the park's mini horses and small train. Youngsters (and anyone young at heart) will relish the chance to glide around the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy. On the lake side of the park, visitors can find pedal boats and row boats available for rent by the hour.

During summertime, the Champs de Mars hosts cultural events such as the Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music) on June 21st and the Fête du Lac (Festival of the Lake) held every year on the first Saturday of August. The Fête du Lac is Europe's largest fireworks show.

There are also fireworks shows presented for the Fête Nationale du 14 Juillet (Bastille Day), along with an orchestra performance.

Jardins de l'Europe

The Jardins de l'Europe is another beautiful leafy park beside the lake. This luxuriant flower-filled green space is found next to the Pont des Amours and offers views of the Chateau d'Annecy . The Eglise Saint-Maurice is a short walk away from the gardens.

If visiting Annecy during the Fête Nationale du 14 Juillet (Bastille Day), the Jardins de l'Europe is one of the best places to experience the festivities. This lovely park hosts some of the city's July 14th celebrations.

Basilique de la Visitation

Crowning a hilltop above the Old Town, this Neo-Romanesque basilica is worth visiting just for the views. To arrive here requires a steep and somewhat strenuous hike from the Old Town; the effort is rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the landscape surrounding Annecy.

The basilica's unembellished exterior contrasts with the ornate interior featuring blue Savoy marble columns in the nave, Venetian-enameled mosaics in the apse, and vibrant stained-glass windows that depict the story of Saint François de Sales.

The Basilique de la Visitation is open to the public every day year-round, free of charge. Guided tours are available.

Address: 20 Avenue de la Visitation, Annecy

Eglise Notre-Dame de Liesse

Except for the 14th- to 15th-century bell tower, the Eglise Notre-Dame de Liesse was built in the 19th century after the original monument at this site was destroyed during the French Revolution. The simple facade and domed interior with Corinthian columns are typical of Sardinian Neoclassical architecture.

This style of building design developed between 1830 and 1850 when the Savoy state was under the rule of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The church is open to the public for visits every day year-round, free of charge. Mass is celebrated here on Sundays.

Address: Place Notre-Dame 74000 Annecy

Eglise Saint-François de Sales

This 17th-century church contains the tombs of two important religious figures of the region: Saint Joan of Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales. With its Italianate facade and richly adorned Baroque interior, the church is a wonderful example of Counter-Reformation-era architecture.

The Eglise Saint-François de Sales is an active parish church that serves the local community. The church is also open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Place Saint François, Annecy

Avenue d'Albigny

Beginning near the Jardins de l'Europe and extending to the Parc Charles-Bosson, the Avenue d'Albigny is a scenic stretch of shoreline alongside the Lac d'Annecy. Tall, leafy plane trees shade the lakeside pedestrian path, which is a pleasant place for a leisurely ramble while admiring the picture-perfect lakeside scenery.

Every year on the second Saturday of October (from 9am until 6pm), the streets of Annecy become the scene of a folkloric festival. Celebrated since the Middle Ages, the Retour des Alpages ( Return from the Pastures ) marks the moment when the herds of alpine cows return from their summer pastures in the mountains to spend the autumn and winter season in the valley.

A parade of cows begins the convivial event, which continues with folk music performances, artisan craft demonstrations, and samplings of regional food products.

Most tourists will want to stay either in Annecy's historic center, the Vieille Ville, or close to Lac d'Annecy. In the winter, the Vieille Ville (Old Town) offers the convenience of easy access to many restaurants and shops within walking distance.

Tourists should keep in mind that the Vieille Ville of Annecy, with its fairy-tale ambience of peaceful canals and meandering cobblestone streets, is only a small area in the center of the city. The rest of the Annecy city center is more modern and does not have the same charm. Most of the hotels on this list are either in the Old Town or near the lake.

How to get to Annecy

Getting to Annecy will likely involve a few methods of public transport. There are two nearby airports: Chambéry Savoie Airport (CMF), and Geneva International Airport (GVA) in neighbouring Switzerland.

Both airports are about 40 kilometres from Annecy, and there are numerous train and bus options from either.

Catching a FlixBus is one of the most hassle-free and affordable ways to travel from Geneva or Chambéry.

There are also regularly departing trains and buses from Lyon, west of Annecy, which take between two and three hours. Flixbus also has an app which is super easy to use!

What to expect in Annecy

Since Annecy is such a beloved tourist destination, most people you come in contact with will be able to communicate with you in English.

Since Francophones are notoriously proud of their language, you might like to learn some greetings in French, if you don’t yet know any. As a visitor, a simple bonjour and merci will show respect to the locals.

France makes it easy for travellers by using the euro. Debit and credit cards are accepted everywhere too, and there are plenty of ATMs in town.

Tipping your taxi driver or bartender isn’t expected, and service charges are added to final bills at restaurants, so you don’t need to leave a tip unless you’ve received exemplary service.

How to get around Annecy

The centre of Annecy is small enough that you can easily get around on foot. Walking around the old town is the ideal way to soak up as much of the charming atmosphere as possible.

If you wish to travel a little further, there are a ton of bike shops in town offering hourly and daily rentals. The Voie Verte is a luscious green cycling path you can follow during your bike ride to visit surrounding lakeside villages.

While the village doesn’t rely too much on public transportation, there are shuttle buses available to get you to the mountains and back.

If you’re staying outside of the old city, renting a car will give you the freedom to explore anywhere and everywhere you’d like.

The best time to visit Annecy

Annecy is absolutely gorgeous no matter the season. That said, the large lake makes it an ideal spot for summer vacationers. June and August are two of the busiest months to visit Annecy, and not just because they’re during summer.

The annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival takes place in June, while the Annecy Lake Festival is on in August. The latter is known for its hour-long fireworks display that draws over 200,000 spectators, so you might like to visit while this festival is on to make your trip extra memorable.

During autumn and spring, Annecy remains lively and vibrant, only with cooler temperatures. In winter, you’ll be able to look out at the snow-topped mountains of the Alps, and take some day trips out for skiing and snowboarding.

Things to do in Annecy

No matter the season, there’s always plenty of things to do in Annecy . Here’s a rundown of some of the top attractions to see during your Annecy sightseeing adventures, as well as some of the most enjoyable activities to take part in.

Visit Annecy Castle

Easily one of the most iconic places to visit in Annecy is Annecy Castle. Château d’Annecy, as it’s known in French, is a restored castle turned museum.

Permanent collections showcase Alps-related artwork, medieval sculptures and regional furnishings.

While the Queen’s Tower dates back to the 12th century, there were several additions to the historic monument up until the 16th century.

Once home to the Counts of Geneva, the castle was abandoned during the 17th century and not restored until 1947. The walls of the castle are 4 metres thick and 38 metres tall, allowing it to also serve as a barracks.

Walk across Lover’s Bridge

The Pont des Amours is a wonderful spot to visit with your special someone. While you won’t find any locks on the bridge like the Parisian Pont des Arts, an old legend states that those who kiss in the middle of the bridge will stay together forever.

The short and scenic footbridge crosses the Thiou River north of the Jardin l’Europe. While the original wooden bridge was built in 1845, the current iron bridge has stood since 1907.

Regardless of your relationship status or who you’re travelling with, you should definitely pay the bridge a visit to admire the view and snap some stunning photos.

Try out a new water sport

The most notable landmark in the region is Lake Annecy (or Lac d’Annecy in French). As the third largest lake in France, there are a ton of activities to try out.

As you would expect, summer is the best time for water sports. Sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding only scratch the surface of the amount of memorable outdoor activities available.

For scuba diving beginners, there are numerous instructors offering introductions and refresher courses throughout the summer. If you’re an experienced diver, you can explore the 1971 La France shipwreck off the shore of Annecy-le-Vieux.

Rent a pedal boat known as a pedalo and explore the lake at your own pace. Pedalos come in two or four seats with deckchairs, so you can pedal out and relax on the water for a while. For something speedier, motorboats for up to six people can be borrowed without a license.

Head to the beach

I’ll bet you weren’t expecting a beach in the French Alps, but Plage des Marquisats will leave you pleasantly surprised! The lakeside Marquisats Beach is the place to be during summer in Annecy.

The sand and grass areas by Annecy Lake are free to access, and the shallow, crystal-clear waters are perfect for cooling down on a hot and sunny day.

Plage des Marquisats is just one of 11 beautiful beaches around Lake Annecy, all of which are supervised with lifeguards throughout July and August. If it happens to be overcrowded while you’re there, try Plage de Menthon-Saint-Bernard or Plage de Talloires, both of which are on the east side of the lake.

Wander the old town

One of the main areas of Annecy, and not to mention the most charming, is Vieille Ville (aka the old town). It’s a joy to take your time and stroll aimlessly through the narrow streets.

You’ll uncover some of the most gorgeous views along the way, particularly once you reach Perrière Bridge. Sip a café au lait at any of the whimsical cafes alongside the Thiou River and soak up the beauty and charm.

Every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, you can peruse the Old Town Market free of charge. While Tuesdays are reserved for local produce, Fridays and Sundays have many more stalls offering a wider variety of goods. Pop by Rue Sainte-Claire on any of these days between seven in the morning and one in the afternoon.

You might also like to stop by Palais de I’lle, a triangular-shaped palace that sits on a tiny island in the middle of the river. Since the 12th century, the building has historically been used as a jail, a care home for the elderly, an administrative centre and a private residence.

Saved from demolishment, the palace became a museum in 1952. It currently showcases temporary art shows and permanent exhibitions detailing the history of the area.

What to eat in Annecy

Similar to the rest of France, cheese is everywhere in Annecy. Some of the famous cheeses in the Haute-Savoie area include abondance, reblochon, beaufort and chevrotin.

If you’re interested in trying some, visit the renowned Pierre Gay cheese shop (aka “fromagerie”) on Rue Carnot or Crèmerie du Lac on Rue du Lac. For some classic fondue, you can’t go past Le Freti or L’Alpin , both on Rue Sainte-Claire.

When dining out, you’ll have a number of great local dishes to try as well. Here are some of our recommendations for what to look for on the menu:

Tartiflette: Originating from Savoy in the Alps, this baked dish is made with potatoes, reblochon cheese, onions and cream. While warming and comforting on its own, bacon is often added too.

French Tartiflette Recipe Bacon, Potato and Reblochon Cheese Gratin

Soupe aux cailloux: Based on a French folk tale, stone soup is prepared using a large round stone to blend the ingredients together. Green cabbage, potatoes, leek, carrots and turnips are the most commonly used vegetables, with added bacon or chicken.

Brioche de Saint-Genix: This local take on brioche includes red pralines and a little extra sweetness. Pick one of up from a local boulangerie (bakery) or enjoy at a cafe with your afternoon tea or coffee.

Gâteau de Savoie: Another favourite dessert from the region, this simple cake made from flour, corn, sugar and eggs is served with apple jam.

Mussels: For a break away from the cheese, order some all-you-can-eat mussels from Captain Pub on Rue du Pont Morens or Brasserie de l’Abbaye on Rue du Paquier.

… Or go swimming, or biking, or paragliding…

There’s truly no shortage of ways to enjoy the lovely Lake Annecy, but if you’re visiting during the summer, swimming in the lake and biking along the trails that border it are definitely some of the most popular!

If you’re looking for a way to admire Lake Annecy while also getting your adrenaline pumping, you can even consider adding paragliding over the lake to your list of things to do in Annecy!

Feel like royalty at the Chateau d’Annecy.

What would a fairytale town be without a castle? The lovely Chateau d’Annecy dates back to the 12th century and once served as the home to the Counts of Geneva–today, it’s a museum and home to a beautiful view over the town.

Taste all the cheese.

Annecy is home to some absolutely delectable French cheeses, and an Alpine cuisine that shows them off at their best.

In between stuffing your face with all the specialties in town (more on that below), be sure to stop by a fromagerie or two to stock up on souvenirs!

Award-winning Pierre Gay is one of the best-known fromageries in town, and we highly recommend that all cheese lovers add a stop here to their list of fun things to do in Annecy: merely the smell of the place makes it worth a visit.

Be sure to wander past the busy front room into the back room of the shop, where you can look down and see wheels upon wheels of cheese aging underneath your feet!

… And also indulge in the delicious local dishes.

With its Alpine culture and location that brushes right up against Switzerland, it should come as no surprise that the food in Annecy tends to be two things: heavy, and full of cheese.

This, of course, is an absolute delight to experience (though you may want to consider eating lightly most of the day and splurging on one meal in the afternoon or evening–this food fills you up!).

Be sure to try fondue, tartiflette (potatoes, cheese, onions, bacon), baked reblochon, and raclette (a fantastic cheese that is often served by scraping it out of the wheel at your table!).

If you’re looking for restaurant recommendations in Annecy, we had a delicious tartiflette lunch at Le Freti, and though we didn’t order the raclette, the one that was delivered to the table next to us looked phenomenal.

Wander aimlessly through Vieille Ville.

Annecy’s Old Town is ridiculously beautiful: canals, small bridges lined with blooming flowers, and tiny shops with wares spilling out into the picture-perfect streets are all common sights.

Add in the smell of fresh-baked breads and croissants that wafts down the street each morning, and you have a combination that makes a walk through Vieille Ville, even without a particular destination in mind, one of the best things to do in Annecy.

We loved sipping our (expensive for what it was, but still) coffee in one of the cafes lining the canal each morning in Annecy, and consider the slight upcharge to be well worth the chance to savor such a magnificent location.

Steal a smooch on Lover’s Bridge.

Visiting Annecy with your beloved? Add a trip to Lover’s Bridge to your list of things to do in Annecy!

Legend says that couples who kiss in the middle of the bridge will experience eternal love–and romance aside, the views of Lake Annecy, the Jardins de l’Europe, and Vieille Ville from the bridge are worth seeing as well.

Stock up on fresh food (and other goodies) at the market.

Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings are market mornings in Annecy, and if you can, definitely plan your trip to Annecy to coincide with at least one of the market days!

On these days, the streets and even the bridges throughout Old Town swell with stalls hawking their wares, and if you hope to add a little shopping to your list of what to do in Annecy, this is the best time to do it!

Tuesday is the smallest market of the week, with just food up for grabs, while on Fridays and Sundays, hard goods like clothes and other textiles are also available.

Picnic in the Jardins de l’Europe.

Designed in the 19th century, this beautiful, English-style garden borders Lake Annecy, and is the perfect place to stop and relax while exploring–or even to have a picnic made up of all the treats you bought at the market!

Admire the most famous view in Annecy at the Palais de l’Isle.

If you’ve seen one photo of Annecy, it’s probably of Palais de l’Isle: this tiny, castle-like structure is located on a tiny island in the middle of the Thiou River is Annecy’s best-known building.

While the structure has served many purposes since it was built in the 12th century, it is perhaps most notorious for being a prison–that was its function during times as far apart as the 13th century and World War II, and at many points in between!

Annecy is small enough that it doesn’t have its own airport, but it’s not terribly complicated to reach.

The closest airport to Annecy is in Geneva (yep–you can visit two different countries when heading to Annecy!), and another solid option is to fly into Lyon.

From there, you can take a bus, train, or rental car to Annecy itself. We personally took a Flixbus from Geneva to Annecy and found it a simple and affordable process. The bus took about an hour and dropped us off at the Annecy train station.

Since Annecy is located within a day’s drive of plenty of France’s highlights, from the Luberon Valley of Provence to Chamonix for those who would like to try skiing in France , it might be worth renting a car simply to use Annecy as a launching pad for a larger trip to France!

My understanding is that it is possible, though less common than other kinds of boats. We’ve never done it ourselves, though!

annecy tourism

Annecy , in the north of the French Alps , is called "the Venice of Savoie " — a well-deserved title. The medieval town centre built around a 14th-century chateau is dissected by small canals and streams running out of Lac Annecy, which is clean, fresh and a wonderful azure colour. Annecy is the prefecture of the département of Haute-Savoie .

Geneva is the nearest major international airport and is well served from across Europe and beyond. On the motorway, it is just over 35 min away. A little further away is Lyon, a full international airport, and Grenoble , which is focused on low-cost and winter flights. Both are about a one-hour drive by car or bus. Annecy's own airport has no commercial flights.

By train [ edit ]

Ten TER Rhône-Alpes trains operated by SNCF leave daily for Annecy from the Gare de Part-Dieu in Lyon , leaving around every two hours from 07:00 to 21:00. A round-trip ticket is €54.40 ( €27.20 one-way) and the trip is around two hours each way.

There are also trains leaving for Annecy from Chambéry , which run more frequently. Eighteen TER trains, a few TGV trains, one Intercités de Nuit train, and one SNCF bus service run between the two towns, taking around an hour each way. A round-trip ticket is €21.20 ( €10.60 one-way).

Three or four through trains per day run all the way from Paris Gare de Lyon, taking around 3 hours 40 minutes. Fares are variable depending on how far in advance you book. A larger number of potential journeys are possible changing at Lyon Part-Dieu.

"Léman Express" trains to Geneva run roughly once per hour, with a journey time of around ninety minutes to the main Geneva Cornavin station. Several other stations are served within the Geneva area.

Visit Annecy (Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, France)

Annecy is one of the most popular towns in the Alps, and is a charming town in an attractive setting with woods, mountains and the Lake d'Annecy all nearby. It has been classified as a Town of Art and History in France.

The town is found in the Haute-Savoie region of eastern France, on the shores of Lake Annecy, 40 kilometres south of Geneva. Annecy is at the northern end of the lake of Annecy, and is 40 kilometres north-east of Aix-les-Bains . It occupies a strategic location on historic trade routes between Italy, Switzerland and France.

Exploring Annecy

France This Way review: I can't recommend highly enough a trip to Annecy and Lake Annecy. The lake with its mountain setting is gorgeous, it is surrounded by some pretty villages including Talloires, a real gem...

...and Annecy itself is a wonderful town - very attractive and as it sits on the edge of a lake you can combine the pleasures of the town with lots of water based activities.

Houses and shops with arcades in historic Annecy

Historic monuments in Annecy

- The Palais de l'Ile, also called the "old prison", was built on an island in the river in the 12th century. The Palais de l'Ile was a court house and a prison and inside you can see the former prison cells and visit an exhibitition on the architecure and heritage. It is the symbol of the town and is among the most photographed monuments in all of France.

- The Château d'Annecy (Annecy Castle) was the home of the Counts of Geneva. In the 16th century the castle entrance was fortified with a parapet walkway. The oldest part of the castle is the Tour de la Reine which was built in the 13th century. From the 17th century to the 1940s it was a barracks and today it houses a museum with exhibitions of Art and History of the area.

- The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre built in the 16th century was the cathedral of François de Sales, and is home to a number of artworks and baroque pieces from the 19th century. Outside the cathedral, the 16th century Hotel Lambert was home to Francis de Sales (bishop of Geneva from 1601-1622).

- The bishop's palace, which adjoins the cathedral, was built in the 18th century. Walk over the bridge to the garden of the bishop's palace and along the Quai Madame de Warens to the Rue de la Republique.

- The Porte Sainte-Claire gate is one of the gateways into the town and next to it is the Gallo House which has an 18th century facade. From here you can take the Pass. Nemours which climbs steeply to the castle.

- Another religious monument is the church of Saint-Maurice which has a flamboyant gothic style of the 15th century, and houses some very interesting paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Other highlights

From the Pont de la Republique you have a lovely view over the Thiou river. The Thiou is one of the shortest rivers in Europe. It is just 3.5 km long, most of which is in the canals running through Annecy making it such a beautiful city - the 'Venice of the Alps'.

When you have explored Annecy take the Quai Napoleon III to the Jardins de l' Europe. These landscaped gardens date back to 1863 and are a pleasant place to relax. From here cross the delightful Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge). This delicate-looking iron bridge was constructed in 1907.

From here you can take the lovely walk along the lake edge to the Impérial Palace. This opened in 1913 and was renovated in the 1980s to make a luxury hotel and casino. There is also a public garden and a beach.

One of the nice things about the lake here is the constant activity. Along the lake edges are people jogging, walking, rollerblading or just sat on the grass on the edge of the lake. Wonderfull!

Canal in the centre of Annecy

Attractions nearby

On the edge of town is the Basilique de la Visitation built in the 20th century, home of the tomb of François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal - both buried in rich copper sarcophaguses, and offers a magnificent view of the town.

After visiting the city be sure to also find time to explore Lake Annecy and the pretty villages around its edges: see the Lake Annecy guide .

Lake Annecy: Places to Visit and Things to Do

Full Width Featured Image With Sidebar

Last Updated:  22 April 2024

The steep wooded and snow-capped mountains rising majestically above the stunning yet peaceful turquoise waters of Lake Annecy provide an unforgettable view. With the historic town of Annecy , famous lakeshore villages such as Talloires , and fairy-tale castles like Menthon and Duingt , Lake Annecy is one of France’s most spectacular settings. We’ve been lucky to make it our home base and, when we lived in the Tarentaise Valley, to drive along its banks very often. Each time, this lake amazed us. And I hope it will make the same impression on you!

🎦 Watch our short video of Annecy:

What is Lake Annecy – a little description

The lake is located at an altitude of 446 metres above sea level and is dominated by the Tournette mountain (2351 m) and the pointed needles of the Dents de Lanfon (1824m) to the east and the Semnoz Mountain (1699m) to the west.

Lake Annecy is one of France’s largest lakes, although smaller than the neighbouring Lake Geneva and Lake Bourget.

It is at its widest between Veyrier and Sévrier (3,350m) and at its narrowest between Duingt and the Roc de Chère (800m).

The lake’s dimensions

The lake is 15km long and has a perimeter of 38km.

Its area covers 27,59 km2, compared to

  • 44,5 km2 for Lake Bourget , and
  • 581,3 km2 for Lake Geneva .

The lake is fed by seven main streams and by a powerful underwater spring known as the Boubioz, bubbling up from a depth of 80 metres near the shores of Annecy. The main outlet is the Thiou, which flows through the historic old town of Annecy  before reaching the Fier River in the town’s suburbs.

Lake Annecy’s two lakes!

The lake comprises two different basins:

  • the Grand Lac (Great Lake), and
  • the Petit Lac (small lake),
  • Both are linked at the strait of Duingt between the peninsula of Ruphy Castle and the steep hill of Roc de Chère near Talloires.

The Petit Lac has a more austere look where steep, wooded mountains border its shores.

On the contrary, the shores of the Grand Lac are wide enough to support villages and cultivation.

One of Europe’s purest lakes

In the late 1950s, the lake suffered badly from pollution and faced the disappearance of its wildlife. The local authorities decided to take drastic steps to clean it up.

This mission was successful, and today, Lake Annecy is one of Europe’s purest lakes. Its birdlife and fish are back.

The next challenge is finding the right balance between preserving the lake’s natural environment and the high tourism and housing development level around its shores.

Where to stay in the region of Annecy?

This affiliate link will direct you to a list of accommodations in the Lake Annecy region.

You can also navigate through the following map – zoom in/zoom out/go left and right to make the accommodation appear.

Main Sights in the region of Lake Annecy

For the best lake experience, take a cruise from Annecy or drive around the lake, stopping at Veyrier, Menthon, Talloires, le Bout-du-Lac, Duingt, Saint-Jorioz, and Sévrier.

Annecy, the Venice of the Alps

Annecy is one of France’s most tourist cities, with its flower-decked canals crossing the medieval old town. Clustered at the foot of its imposing castle, the “Venice of the Alps” are historic buildings and churches such as the fortress of Palais de l’Île , Notre-Dame de Liesse and the St. Claire Gate.

The Jardins de l’Europe and the lawns of the Pâquier offer magnificent views over the crystal clear lake and the surrounding mountains.

The West Side of the Lake

The eastern shore of Lake Annecy enjoys a lot of  sunshine and stretches from Veyrier-du-Lac to the commune of Verthier. There are three villages of importance: Veyrier-du-Lac, Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloires, all situated at the foot of the towering mountains of the Prealps.

Veyrier-du-Lac

From a former wine-growing village, Veyrier-du-Lac has become a wealthy residential suburb of Annecy. Stretching for 5km along the D909 road, Veyrier-du-Lac is a popular tourist spot with gastronomic and accommodation facilities .

Menthon-Saint-Bernard

There are three sites to discover in the pretty village of Menthon-Saint-Bernard: the lakeshore with its harbour, beach and promenade, the old Savoyard village and the medieval castle of Menthon .

The 13th-century castle is still owned by the Menthon dynasty, who came from Burgundy in 1190.

Find out more about Menthon-Saint-Bernard .

Roc de Chère

Between Menthon and Talloires, the rocky hill of Roc de Chère is covered by 200 hectares of forest, offering fabulous views over the lake.

Due to a favourable climate, Mediterranean and mountain species of animals share the same home. This has led to creating a natural reserve where typical forest wildlife (wild boar, deer, squirrels, woodpeckers, reptiles and butterflies) live.

A marked path links Talloires to Menthon through the reserve.

The small lakeside village of Talloires is situated in a charming setting at the foot of the sharp rocky ridges of the Dents de Lanfon. Its little marina faces the romantic silhouette of Ruphy castle in Duingt. The village houses many celebrated hotels and restaurants and is accessible by boat from Annecy .

The village is overtopped by the shrine of St. Germain (Ermitage Saint-Germain). The church terrace commands stunning views of the Bay of Talloires and the castle of Duingt.

Find out more about Talloires .

The East Side of the Lake

The eastern shore of Lake Annecy stretches from Sévrier to Le Bout-du-Lac (commune of Lathuile) and follows the slopes of the Semnoz  Mountain and the Taillefer Ridge.

A residential suburb of Annecy , Sévrier, is crossed by the cycling path linking Annecy to Faverges.

Located on Place de l’église, the Ecomuseum of Lake Annecy reveals an extensive collection of objects and old local customs with entertainment and re-enactments of everyday life in the 19th century.

The Paccard Museum , situated outside the village towards Saint-Jorioz, is dedicated to the amazing story of the Paccard Bell Foundry.

Saint-Jorioz

The small town of Saint-Jorioz (pop. 5,800) is one of the roads that access the Regional Natural Park of the Bauges, which covers the Prealps massif between Annecy, Chambéry, and Albertville. The crescent-shaped harbour is the lake’s biggest marina, with 368 mooring rings.

Starting at the marina, the ‘ Sentier des Roselières ’ (Roselières footpath) follows the shore of the lake with spectacular views over the Dents de Lanfon and the Tournette. Extending over three kilometres, the path borders the lake’s largest reed beds, which offer protection and shelter to many species of water birds. Many instructive panels describing the lake’s natural environment are dotted along the way. The reeds play an important natural cleaning function in the lake, contributing to the water’s purity.

The village of Duingt enjoys an idyllic setting tucked away between Lake Annecy and the last slopes of the Taillefer mountain .

Duingt is a small place but has retained a number of typical Savoyard houses from the 17th and 18th centuries along the old and narrow streets. The commune has two private castles, the Dhéré and Ruphy castles.

Find out more about Duingt .

Le Bout-du-Lac

Situated at the southern end of Lake Annecy, the locality of “Bout-du-Lac” (end of the lake) belongs to the commune of Lathuile. You’ll find a camping site and a trendy beach in the summer months.

The marshlands are a protected natural reserve in Doussard . This is one of our favourite sites. You can explore this part of the lake by walking on marked paths all year round. From the top of an old watchtower, a magnificent view of the lake awaits.

Annecy Mountains, aka the Prealps of Annecy

Lake Annecy is surrounded by several iconic mountains, which offer spectacular views over the lake and the surrounding summits of the French Alps .

The Semnoz (pronounced the ‘z’) is 16km long and rises to 1699 metres above sea level at Crêt de Chatillon. The summit is accessible by car and offers breathtaking views over the French northern Alps from Mont-Blanc to the Vanoise and Écrins massifs.

Only a tiny part of Lake Annecy is visible (Duingt). For a better view of the lake, it is recommended to walk to the Belvédère de Bénévent, accessible on the way down to Annecy through a ‘route forestière’.

Mounts Veyrier and Baron

The two mountains rising above the village of Veyrier-du-Lac are linked by a ridge known as the ‘sentier des crêtes’.

The Mount Baron Belvedere (1254m) offers a beautiful panoramic view over Annecy , the lake, the Bauges massif on one side and the Aravis and  Mont-Blanc on the other. An orientation table shows the names of the surrounding mountains.

Col de la Forclaz

The Forclaz Pass or Col de la Forclaz (1150m) is situated between Talloires and Montmin on the D42 road. The view from the belvedere reveals the entire lake, the Arcalod, and the Bauges massif’s summits, the Dents de Lanfon, and the Tournette. Spectacular is the word!

The Angon Waterfalls

In the heights of Talloires, the lofty 60 m tall waterfalls of Angon are a hidden gem. You must park your car at the hamlet of Verel (between Talloires and Col de la Forclaz). A word of caution, though: children must be observed closely when walking near the waterfall as it is slippery.

The mysterious Pont des Fées (Fairies Bridge) is just above the waterfalls.

The Tournette

The Tournette Mountain (2351m) is the highest summit of the mountains encircling Lake Annecy. Its shape resembling an armchair is visible from Annecy  and the western shore.

Its summit is accessible by a steep and sometimes awkward path, with metal stairs and a chain to hold on to at the very top. From the top, the spectacular view extends from the Semnoz to the Lake on one side and to the Aravis and Mont-Blanc on the other. This is one of the rare mountains I haven’t climbed (yet), as I suffer from vertigo!

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Haute-Savoie

Annecy - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Haute-Savoie

Capital of the Haute-Savoie , Annecy is a city of Art with a magnificent architectural harmony. Walking around Annecy old town is a real delight. With its charming canals, its flower-bedecked banks, its small delightful bridges and its beautiful houses with colourful facades, Annecy carries really well its nickname of Savoyard Venice. How pleasant it is to stroll along its canals or walk around the lovely narrow pedestrian streets!

In the heart of the old town, the Île palace, a former prison and the Palais de Justice (law courts), is today home to the Annecy History museum. Near this symbolic building of the 12th century, the Sainte-Claire street is also an unmissable place during the visit for its beautiful arcaded houses. Towering over the town, the museum-castle, former residence of the counts of Geneva and the dukes of Genevois-Nemours, is dedicated to archaeology, ethnology, art, history and alpine lakes.

To complete this beautiful visit, there's nothing like a walk on the edge of the magnificent Annecy lake. Not to be missed! The Europe gardens, the Amours bridge spanning the Vassé canal, the Albigny avenue lined with plane trees and the Champ de Mars are magnificent sites great for relaxation. For the best way to discover the lake and surrounding mountains, visitors can take a trip on tourist boats or hire pedalos and small motor boats.

Located to the southwest of the Annecy metropolitan area, Seynod stretches at the foot of the Semnoz mountain, facing west, over 10 km long.

The territorial and demographic expansion of Seynod was favored by the merger with Vieugy in 1965 and with Balmont in 1973. This association merger was transformed into a full merger on July 1, 1997. Seynod currently has nearly 18,000 inhabitants.

Things to see and do

Among the highlights of Annecy, the lake is undoubtedly one of the most popular natural sights. Several beaches, sand or grass, you will enjoy the sweet season. Young and old will find their happiness both for a game of beach volleyball and to play a game of petanque furious. You will also have a picnic area. At night, a nightclub opens its doors to dance until the end of the night in this magical setting. But Lake Annecy also allows water activities from the quietest to the most sensational. You can rent pedal boats or go wakeboarding. Three marinas and mooring area are available where you can enjoy boating. Finally, many walks around the lake are on the program.

To discover this beautiful landscape from another point of view, you can embark on your choice on a catamaran, on old wooden boats or on a private boat for an unforgettable cruise on the lake. The immense expanse of water is also discovered by gyrocopter, hot air balloon or even microlight airs.

But Annecy is also a city of art and culture. Starting with its castle classified as an historic monument. Home of the famous counts of Geneva, the immaculately preserved building now houses a museum and ephemeral exhibitions. The imposing building combines a defensive style of impregnable fortress with the refined charm of the Île-de-France buildings. The visit continues with the old prisons of the Palais de l'Isle. Initially toll zone on the Thiou, the building quickly became alternately a prison, an asylum or a court, today to house the splendid exhibitions of the Center of Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage. In addition to the exhibited collections, you can visit the cells at the water's edge, the chapel and several rooms at various destinations.

During your walks in Annecy, you will be led to discover many old houses having kept all their stamp as the Gallo house of Italian influence of the eighteenth century or the hotel de Sales , residence of the Princes of the House of Savoy. The religious heritage is not left behind with the St. Peter's Cathedral dating from the sixteenth century. Built in the old Annecy, the building is of Renaissance style outside and Gothic style inside. Among other remarkable wood carvings, you can admire an organ over 7 meters high, classified as an historic monument.

Cran-Gevrier is not lacking in tourist interest, thanks to its historical monuments.

Built in the place of a Romanesque church dating from the 11th century, the chapel of Gevrier is today the oldest religious monument of all around Annecy. Disused in the 1970s, it was renovated in 2010. You can also enjoy other religious monuments like the church of Pont Neuf in 1936, the church of St. Genevieve des Bressis, the Sacred Church heart of Mosinges, beautiful example of sacred art of Vatican II, or the beautiful church of the Annunciation in Vallon. Built in the 1970s, it has a beautiful Neo-Gothic style.

The statue of St. Joseph, which dominates the district of Sous-Aléry, or the grotto of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, built because the area had been protected during bombings in 1943, are also interesting.

Old fortified house of the fifteenth century, the castle Alery formerly allowed to monitor the roads of Rumilly and Chambery. Very old, the original building served as a farm in the Gallo-Roman era before being fortified in the eleventh century. The majority of today's remains date from the 15th and 16th centuries. You can still admire a farmyard, quadrangular houses, or even a portal point.

Listed as a historic monument for its facades and roofs, the castle Promery is a former stronghold of the fourteenth century. Outside, one can discover a main building flanked by square towers, while inside several portraits of René Favre, Marie de Villaret or Vaugelas, are exposed. The Château de Monthoux, also an old fortified house, is also worth a visit.

Of Sardinian neo-classical style, the Saint-Maurice church was originally built in the 15th century in a Romanesque style. Partly destroyed in the mid-nineteenth century, it has seen its architectural appearance strongly modified. One can appreciate a beautiful statue of Saint Michael Archangel of the fifteenth century. The windows of the choir, which notably show Saint Maurice in warrior dress, are classified as Historical Monuments.

City where life is good, Seynod has many cultural facilities (media library, music school) and sports to ensure a comfortable life for its people. Cinema and entertainment fans will be able to enjoy themselves in the Auditorium, while sportsmen will practice their favorite sport in one of the structures (gymnasium, tennis club), through numerous hikes on the trails, horseback riding or well go relax at the nautical center L'Ile Bleue with its wellness and fitness area.

On the associative side, Cap Périaz Espace Jacques Besson is a quality equipment that can accommodate associations, individuals, and companies for conferences, forums or exhibitions. This space comes in complementarity of the already existing places of welcome as the Saint Martin room and the house of Malaz.

Whatever kind of traveler you might be, I’m sure you’ll find the historic center of Annecy full of charm . On a sunny day, it is so beautiful that it can pull your cheeks up to a smile!

Simply wandering the streets of Annecy can satiate your wanderlust, making it a must-visit destination. With its bridges adorned with flowers, narrow lanes with arcades, and pastel-colored houses, your eyes are in for a treat!

Annecy France, Beautiful houses flanking the narrow streets

When you visit Annecy, be sure to have your camera ready. Clear out your existing media and make room for new memories because the historic center is brimming with picturesque scenes.

But it’s not just a feast for the eyes – Annecy’s historic center is also home to charming cafes and restaurants serving up specialties from the alpine region. Your taste buds will be tantalized by mountain delicacies like Tartiflette, Raclette, and Fondue – don’t miss out on these!

The historic center of Annecy is sprinkled with hidden gems that can surprise you as you wander around. If you’re planning a walking tour of Annecy’s historic center, here are some things I found that you might also want to see:

  • Porte Perrière — it is one of the gates of the historic center of Annecy. You’ll find a cute house with a flower-decked wooden balcony a few steps away. It’s nice to visit for a selfie.
  • Rue Perrière & Rue Sainte-Claire — these are perhaps the most picturesque streets in Annecy. During peak season, this narrow pathway flanked by arcaded buildings is bustling with tourists.
  • Cathédrale Saint-Pierre — this church has a beautiful organ with colorful rose windows in the backdrop. The choir is also notable. I like the lighting effects created by the windows and the stained glass windows above the altar.
  • Église Notre Dame de Liesse — At night, its imposing Disney castle-like spire glows—quite nice to see. The most notable part is its ornate interiors with a dome painted with beautiful frescoes. The dome has an oculus, creating a “holy” light effect inside the church.

Are you seeking other European locations to fulfill your wanderlust desires? Why not explore Bern in Switzerland, Nuremberg in Germany, and Verona in Italy? These cities are home to picturesque old towns that make for delightful strolls.

2. Annecy’s Romantic Bridge — Perfect Travel Date ♥

Annecy France, Drone shot of the historic center, its canals, houses, and scenery

If you’re traveling with your special someone, walking down Annecy’s picturesque streets is the only start of your romantic trip to Annecy.

Can you imagine?

Annecy France, View of the historic center from the bridges

Imagine— You and your partner stroll together, lost in time, as you wander the charming streets of Annecy, hand in hand. As you amble, you share your deepest feelings, dreams, and aspirations. Isn’t it a scene straight out of a movie? A moment so special that you’ll remember it forever.

There’s no doubt that Annecy offers the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories. Known as ‘the Venice of the Alps’, its charm and beauty have been vouched for by countless visitors.

Venice =Romantic city.

As previously mentioned, the romantic journey in Annecy begins on its streets, but it certainly doesn’t end there. There’s so much more to discover. Much like Venice, the most beautiful spots in Annecy are found along its canals and bridges.

Annecy France, Pont Perrière, Thiou River, and Le Palais de I'Île

It’s as if these settings were designed for the romantic moments we all dream about. With flower-bedecked adornments and ducks swimming on the canal’s blue waters, romance permeates every nook and cranny of this place. In my opinion, these features alone are reason enough for any couple to visit Annecy.

When you explore Annecy’s historic center, you’ll come across several bridges spanning the River Le Thiou and Canal du Vassé – undeniably two of the most beautiful locations in Annecy.

Annecy France, View of Le Palais de I'Île behind Pont Perrière

If my memory serves me right, there are seven bridges in the historic center of Annecy. However, in my opinion, there are only two that are absolutely must-see:

  •   Pont Perrière — This bridge offers a spectacular view of Annecy’s most emblematic scene. You’re looking at Le Palais de I’Île, the city’s main landmark, which many affectionately call a “house shaped like a ship.” Stay tuned as we uncover more about it in our exploration.
  • Pont des Amours — Here, you’re greeted with a picturesque view of Canal du Vassé, beautifully framed by trees on either side. But a simple turn reveals a different spectacle – breathtaking vistas of Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains.”

Annecy France, Serene and picturesque view of Canal du Vassé

Judging by their names, I bet you can guess which of the two bridges is the more romantic. Any ideas? Of course, it’s the Pont des Amours! This translates to “Love Bridge” in English.

Annecy France, Sunrise in Pont des Amours

According to legend, the Pont des Amours has been the crossing point for countless lovers over the years. It’s said that those who shared a kiss on this bridge were bound together for eternity. For couples who have found their soulmates, the prospect of exchanging kisses on the Pont des Amours must be thrilling.

For those of us who are single, let’s not lose heart! Even if we don’t have a lifelong love to share this moment with, we can still fall in love with the breathtaking views. Remember, our time will come—patience is key. 🙂

Please note: Pont des Amours can get quite busy during the peak season. To experience its romantic atmosphere, I suggest you rise early and visit the bridge before Annecy fills up with day visitors. If luck is on your side, you might witness the magnificent sunrise over Lake Annecy!

3. Historical Landmark in Annecy — A Unique Place

Annecy France, Le Palais de I'Île at night

One compelling reason to visit Annecy is the presence of a unique historical heritage site known as Le Palais de I’Île. What makes Le Palais de I’Île so unique?

It’s a structure that stands out not just in Annecy, but perhaps even in all of France. To my knowledge, only a handful of places in Europe boast such distinctive architecture. One such place is the picturesque town of Bamberg in Southern Germany .

In essence, Le Palais de I’Île is a 12th-century castle situated on an island in the River Thiou. It holds the distinction of being one of the oldest buildings in Annecy that still retains its original form.

Indeed, for travelers seeking unique discoveries in each destination, Annecy won’t disappoint. Furthermore, Le Palais de I’Île is one of France’s most photographed landmarks. Given its scenic location amidst vibrant houses and the turquoise waters of the River Thiou, it’s easy to see why.

Annecy France, The colorful pastel houses beside Le Palais de I'Île

Let’s not forget the striking appearance of Le Palais de I’Île. It resembles the bow of a stone ship, cleaving the Thiou River in two! This sight is sure to captivate not only photographers but also artists attempting to capture this beautiful facet of Annecy on canvas.

From the Pont Perrière, Le Palais de I’Île doesn’t appear to be an island structure. However, upon closer inspection and entry into the building, you’ll find that it’s only linked to the banks of the River Thiou by bridges.

Do you know what truly amazed me about Le Palais de I’Île? Its rich history. From the vantage point of Pont Perrière, Le Palais de I’Île might seem like a simple town hall.

However, this structure has served a multitude of purposes over the years. It has been a stronghold, a prison, a home for the elderly, a carpentry school, and even a gymnasium. Today, it functions as a museum under the management of the Architecture and Heritage Interpretation Center.

Inside, you’ll find exhibits that showcase Annecy’s heritage and urban history. Despite its modest size, Le Palais de I’Île holds a wealth of discoveries.

For those interested in visiting Le Palais de I’Île, all the necessary visitor information, such as opening hours and entrance fees, can be found on the official Annecy Museum website . And here’s a useful tip: You have the option to visit both Le Palais de I’Île and Annecy Castle, which we’ll touch on next, under one combined ticket. This is a cheaper alternative to buying individual tickets for each site.

For those who delight in discovering cities with unique attractions, Strasbourg is a must-visit. Similar to Annecy, Strasbourg is home to a picturesque old city. However, it’s the awe-inspiring Cathedral, one of the world’s largest, that sets it apart.

4. Annecy’s Magical Castle — Full of Discoveries

Annecy France, Musée-Château d'Annecy

Did you know that Annecy’s historic center is home to not one, but two castles? The first is Le Palais de I’Île, the castle situated on an island in the Thiou River that we’ve already discussed.

The second is Musée-Château d’Annecy, a commanding structure that adds to the allure of visiting Annecy. Located in the southern part of Annecy’s historic center, Musée-Château d’Annecy is just a short, less than 5-minute walk from Rue Perrière & Rue Sainte-Claire.

What makes the Musée-Château d’Annecy so extraordinary is its age; it’s been a sentinel for Annecy for almost nine centuries since the 12th century. It has seen numerous alterations over the years, yet its formidable medieval defensive design is still perceptible.

It’s worth noting that this castle was once the dwelling of the counts of Geneva in the 13th and 14th centuries, hence you’ll also find elements of Renaissance-style architecture.

So, what makes Musée-Château d’Annecy a reason to visit Annecy? The answer lies in the unexpected.

This towering castle, with its height exceeding 30 meters and walls that are over 3 meters thick, offers more than just the impressiveness of its medieval architecture. Inside, it transforms into a museum showcasing a diverse collection of exhibits that you wouldn’t typically associate with a castle.

While most European castles typically display antiques, medieval items, and the weapons and armor of knights and noblemen, Musée-Château d’Annecy offers something quite unexpected – underwater archaeology (courtesy of the Regional Alpine Lakes Observatory).

The castle also houses other unusual exhibits, including contemporary art and films. However, in my opinion, the underwater archaeology exhibit is perhaps the most intriguing discovery you can make at Musée-Château d’Annecy.

At first, it baffled me to think about how marine life could have made its way to such elevated alpine lakes, far removed from any ocean or sea.

Anyway, a visit to Musée-Château d’Annecy will enlighten you with fascinating insights into alpine flora and fauna, as well as the fishing and tourism industries. What’s more, you’ll get to see fishing tools that have been around since the Neolithic age!

I don’t want to give away all the surprises that await you in the castle, but you can find more information about the underwater archaeology exhibit at Musée-Château d’Annecy here.

However, the offerings at Musée-Château d’Annecy extend beyond underwater archaeology and contemporary art. You might also be interested in exploring Annecy’s heritage, viewing local fine art masterpieces, examining religious artifacts, and much more.

And let’s not forget that Musée-Château d’Annecy offers a fantastic vantage point of Annecy’s historic center.

Where can you find it? Once inside the castle, look for a tree situated away from the entrance. Make your way there, and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking, panoramic view of the old houses and Lake Annecy.

Isn’t it astonishing to discover such a wealth of information within a single castle? If you’re now intrigued to visit Musée-Château d’Annecy, remember that it’s open throughout the year, except for Tuesdays.

For more details about admission prices and other visiting information for Musée-Château d’Annecy and the Regional Alpine Lakes Observatory , you can find them here.

Annecy France, Tourists on a boat in Lake Annecy

Lake Annecy caters to water sports enthusiasts with its provision of equipment and boat rentals right on its shores, eliminating the need for you to bring your own. To help you get started, here’s a list of providers offering water sports services at Lake Annecy .

What’s so exciting about Lake Annecy? It’s the fact that the lake offers some not-so-typical alpine activities like snorkeling, freediving, and scuba diving. You’ll be amazed to find out that there’s a shipwreck hidden in its depths! It’s fascinating to think that an alpine lake could provide such unique experiences.

Interestingly, an underwater tour of the lake reveals prehistoric villages and ancient lake cities, which are actually designated as UNESCO heritage sites.

If the beauty of Annecy’s lovely lake has captured your heart, you might also find yourself enchanted by Lake Garda and Lake Como in Northern Italy , as well as Montreux , Thun , and Lucerne in Switzerland . These destinations, much like Annecy, boast stunning landscapes and a plethora of attractions including lakeside castles and more.

6. Annecy’s Gorgeous Church — Serene and Scenic Place

Annecy France, Basilica of the Visitation

Tranquility and relaxation aren’t exclusive to Lake Annecy. If you find the beaches and promenades at Lake Annecy too crowded or are in the mood for a more serene atmosphere, there’s a place I recommend. It’s the Basilique de la Visitation, a church nestled on a hill south of Annecy’s historic center.

If you’re already at Musée-Château d’Annecy, it’s less than a 15-minute walk away. This church is not just an architectural wonder, but also a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. The elegance and peacefulness of the place might just help you find your…

  • Mind in peace.
  • Thoughts filled with awe.

All the negativities occupying your mind will be gone by the time you leave the place.

The stunning beauty and elevated location of the Basilique de la Visitation can make you feel as though you’ve stepped into a special scene. I’m not sure why, but it gave me the impression of a place straight out of a video game I used to play – like it could be the dwelling of an oracle or something similar.

Annecy France, The spire of the Basilica of the Visitation

Well, the fact is Basilique de la Visitation is really a special place! This site holds particular significance for Christians who visit as pilgrims to partake in Salesian worship.

Annecy France, Basilica of the Visitation

Additionally, the Basilique de la Visitation is one of Annecy’s five emblematic bell towers, each representing a different era in the city’s history.

Unlike other churches in Annecy and renowned churches across Europe, the Basilique de la Visitation is relatively young, having been constructed in the early 1900s. As such, it exhibits elements of Gothic Revival architecture rather than traditional Baroque or Romanesque styles.

While it may not be as grand as the churches in Venice , Paris , Rome , Florence , or Wurzburg , that doesn’t mean we should overlook the Basilique de la Visitation. Each church has its own unique charm and distinct features.

The most notable exterior feature of the Basilique de la Visitation is the arch portal beneath its solitary spire. The bricks, the relief on the walls, and the grid above the doorway all contribute to a heavenly gateway impression.

As you step inside, you’re likely to be awestruck by the towering columns of blue marble lining the nave. As you make your way towards the altar, your eyes will be drawn to the kaleidoscopic stained-glass windows that bathe the church’s interior in a spectrum of colors – a sight that’s truly magical!

The artwork of the Holy Trinity in the choir is also worth noting. Above it, light tunnels form a cross, creating stunning light effects on a bright sunny day.

If you’re an architecture enthusiast, you’ll find it hard to resist capturing this beauty. However, if you do take photos, please ensure that you do not disturb those who are praying or meditating.

Basilique de la Visitation is usually open from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm (closed from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm). Entry is free. Learn more about Basilique de la Visitation from its official website (in French).

Should your journey take you to France and you’re keen on exploring magnificent churches, I highly recommend a visit to Reims . It boasts one of the most extraordinary churches I know of, especially considering its historical role as the coronation church for the kings of France.

7. Hike Scenic Trails Around Annecy — Revitalize

Annecy France, Hiking trails overlooking Lake Annecy

Annecy, in my view, is one of the easiest and prettiest towns to visit in France, with great hiking trails just around the corner.

That’s why I reckon a trip to Annecy is a top-notch idea! In fact, hiking is the real deal here. Why so? Because there’s no other activity that boosts your health for free while also giving you a sense of calm and wonder.

I’ve been on several hikes and always come away feeling better. What about you? Or maybe you’ve never tried hiking? If not, I strongly suggest giving it a go at least once. I guarantee it’s worth your while.

Close to 50 hiking trails await you in Annecy and the surrounding Lake Annecy area. These trails span distances ranging from 1 to 14 kilometers (or about 0.6 to 8.6 miles). So no matter if you’re a beginner, an intermediate-level hiker, or a seasoned pro, there’s a trail tailored to your skill level.

Annecy France, Sunset in the hiking trails overlooking Lake Annecy

Here’s an interactive map that lays out all the hiking trails around Lake Annecy. If you’d prefer to stay close to the town of Annecy, there are 4 nearby scenic hiking trails that you might want to check out:

  • L’ancien téléphérique du Mont Veyrier — This hiking trail commences in Bois Jettas, located on the eastern outskirts of Annecy. It’s a challenging 10.5-kilometer (or 6.5-mile) track that typically takes around 4.5 hours to complete. Despite its ‘hard’ rating, the trail rewards hikers with a stunning panoramic view of Lake Annecy and the surrounding alpine peaks.
  • Cross of Chuguet-Grande Jeanne from Létraz — Starting from the town of Sevrier, which is just a 20-minute bus journey from Annecy, this is a hiking trail that you might find interesting. This 5.3-kilometer (3.3-mile) trail, which takes about 1.75 hours to complete, winds through a beautiful forest and culminates at a viewpoint. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the craggy peaks that rise to the east of Lake Annecy.
  • The loop of the Château de Menthon – Montviard waterfalls — This hiking loop could be one of the most enchanting hikes near Annecy. The trail begins in Bluffy, a town just a 25-minute drive from Annecy. From there, you’ll embark on a 3-hour journey, covering a distance of 6 kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles), during which you’ll pass by a castle, quaint hamlets, and alpine fields. The hike is rated as having medium difficulty.
  • The hamlets of Château Menthon-St-Bernard — This is a more accessible variant of the previous hiking trail, perfect for families. It meanders through charming hamlets and offers a glimpse of a castle along the way. The route spans 4 to 5 kilometers (or about 3.10 miles), which you can easily cover in under 2 hours. The starting point is Menthon-St-Bernard, a town located just a short 20-minute drive from Annecy.

Indeed, all these trails provide pleasant experiences. However, if you’re interested in making your hike more meaningful by discovering historical artifacts as you wander through nature, then this next recommendation I have for you might be just what you’re looking for.

Annecy France, View of the hiking trails in Plateau des Glières

The place is Plateau des Glières.

Situated 30 kilometers from Annecy is Plateau des Glières, a limestone plateau that provides picturesque views of the French alpine countryside. Imagine hiking through rolling meadows, once used as mountain pastures, accompanied by the calming melody of cowbells and bird calls.

This plateau also holds historical significance as a testament to the courage of the French resistance during World War II. As you hike, you’ll encounter memorials that narrate the valiant struggle of 465 men against the German forces.

Here’s the official website of Plateau des Glières , where you can learn more about the place.

8. Fun Adventures in Annecy — Fly, Drift, Enjoy Postcard-Level Scenery

For me, hiking is an enjoyable activity. Taking a leisurely stroll in a picturesque city is delightful. Relaxing by a lake with a beach is pure pleasure! This is why I think a trip to Annecy is full of fun.

And having fun—that’s another great reason why you should visit Annecy! There are numerous ways to have fun in Annecy. You can find it everywhere, whether on the lake, up in the mountains, or soaring through the skies… Like experiencing tandem paragliding.

Annecy France, Tandem Paragliding

However, for an unforgettable tandem paragliding experience, I suggest heading to Chamonix . The panoramic view from above is simply breathtaking. You’ll get to see glaciers, the majestic Mont Blanc, serene alpine lakes, charming villages, and so much more.

When it comes to Annecy, I believe it’s best to immerse yourself in the outdoor activities that the town is famous for – water sports! You can try out the various water sports on Lake Annecy that I mentioned earlier.

Plus, did you know that the rivers flowing into Lake Annecy also offer plenty of fun? There are several services available for you to try rafting, hydrospeed, or river fishing. So, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures in Annecy.

And while it may seem like all the fun is centered around the lake, river, and mountains, you’d be surprised to find that there’s also plenty to enjoy within Annecy’s historic center. In fact, the fun begins right in the heart of Annecy’s historic center. As you wander, you’ll be treated to scenes worthy of a postcard, fulfilling all your escapist fantasies.

You might come across artists showcasing their entertaining talents or stumble upon intriguing snippets of history. Once you’ve explored Annecy’s historical center, you’re likely to find yourself on the promenades and beaches of Lake Annecy. Here, stunning and serene views of the mountains and lake await!

You could continue your walk, but I recommend adding a bit of excitement to your journey. How about joining a Segway tour?

A Segway is a recently invented two-wheeled self-balancing transporter. Segway tours in Annecy will guide you to the most scenic locations along Lake Annecy’s shores, such as Jardins de l’Europe and La Pâquier. The route ends at the Imperial Palace Hotel, an architectural gem featuring an exquisite Belle Epoque facade.

If you’re apprehensive about not knowing how to operate a Segway, there’s no need to fret! The guides are there to instruct you. You might feel a bit unsure initially… But once you’ve got the hang of it and start gliding around independently, it’s going to be an absolute blast!

Learn more about this fun and exciting activity here .

If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, you’ll definitely want to experience the thrill of mountain adventures. There’s a world of options just waiting for you in France’s neighboring countries! In Switzerland, explore the wonders of Zermatt and the Jungfrau Region . Over in Germany, the Bavarian Alps beckon with the picturesque towns of Mittenwald , Berchtesgaden , and Garmisch-Partenkirchen , known for their charming luftmalerie houses. And don’t forget Italy’s Dolomites, where Cortina d’Ampezzo is a great place to start!

9. Annecy’s Fun Festivals & Events — Make Your Trip Special!

Annecy France, Fête du Lac

There are certain times of the year when Annecy comes alive with celebrations that make it an even more appealing place to visit. With each season, Annecy hosts a different event, adding to its charm and vibrancy!

One of the most spectacular among these is The Fête du Lac . This is an extraordinary pyrotechnic spectacle over the lake, featuring music, lights, and water displays. It’s a time-honored tradition that commemorates Napoleon III’s visit to Annecy.

The event takes place on the first Saturday of August in Lake Annecy’s Bay of Albigny and lasts for about 70 minutes. In previous years, Fête du Lac has attracted more than 100,000 spectators, earning it a reputation as one of Europe’s grandest fireworks displays.

Must know: Carcassonne , known for its preserved medieval city, also has fireworks during summer.

While Fête du Lac is Annecy’s summer spectacle, Retour des Alpages is the town’s autumn celebration.

Held on the second Saturday of October, Retour des Alpages is a traditional event that brings the old quarters of the city to life. You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time as you witness locals showcasing their products, traditional instruments, folk groups, craftsmen, and old trades.

The highlight of Retour des Alpages? A parade featuring hundreds of animals from alpine pastures and locals in ceremonial dress, offering a glimpse into the crafts and traditions of the Savoy region.

As winter draws to a close, on the second weekend after Mardi Gras, Annecy lives up to its reputation as the ‘Venice of the Alps.’

This is when the Venetian Carnival takes place, turning Annecy into a place of magic and vitality. The city buzzes with excitement as residents take to the streets in their masked disguises and lavish, brightly colored attire.

Did you know? Annecy is not only known as the Venice of the Alps, but it’s also celebrated as the World Capital of Animated Films.

As spring gives way to summer, people flock to Annecy to honor this art form at the International Animation Film Festival. You can find the festival schedule on the official website .

This event offers a unique opportunity to enjoy free open-air animated film shows and connect with fellow animation enthusiasts. The festival showcases a diverse range of animated shows, from popular anime like Dragon Ball to quirky children’s cartoons. If you’re a fan of animation, this festival is sure to delight you.

10. Annecy is Surrounded by More Attractions — Definitely Worth It!

Annecy France, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard

Yet another reason why Annecy is a must-visit destination is due to the array of attractions in its vicinity. With these, you can anticipate:

  • To have more variety of experiences in Annecy.
  • You will have a lot more to see.
  • That you surely won’t be bored even after you’ve seen the attractions in the historic center.

While there are numerous attractions in the vicinity of Annecy, I would recommend checking out Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Gorges du Fier.

Annecy France, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard

I suggest checking out Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard. It’s a castle that looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale, sitting on top of a hill that’s 200 meters high. Even though it was built in the 10th century, it’s been changed a lot over the years, with new parts added in the 13th and 19th centuries.

It’s not too hard to get to from Annecy – just a 20-minute drive or two bus rides (about an hour in total, buses #60 and #V3). Some people say that this castle was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Disneyland castles, but others think it was Germany’s Neuschwanstein .

No matter what the truth is, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard is a great place to live out your medieval movie or TV show dreams. It reminds me of Merlin, a TV show about the Arthurian Legend that I watched on Netflix from 2008-2012.

In my opinion, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard offers three fantastic elements that make a visit to this castle truly worthwhile. First, its picturesque location. Second, its impressive library. And finally, its distinctive architecture and furniture.

Thanks to its elevated position, the views from the castle are simply breathtaking. From the gardens of Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard, you can take in the stunning vistas of limestone-peaked mountains and Lake Annecy.

While the view is certainly captivating, what might truly astonish you is the castle’s library. It’s filled with intriguing items that seem straight out of Hogwarts. Believe it or not, it houses over 12,000 books, all published before 1800. These ancient books give off an air of magic spells used by witches and sorcerers. The castle also boasts ornate furniture that adds to its enchanting atmosphere.

Be sure to check out the illuminations made by monks during the medieval period – they’re quite spine-tingling! The castle has 105 rooms, all filled with antique furniture from the 16th to 19th centuries. The timber-framed interiors, along with the paintings and room decorations, are truly impressive. They could make you feel like you’ve stepped into the shoes of a nobleman for a day.

For more information on visiting, you can visit the official website of Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard .

If you’re someone who doesn’t fear heights and isn’t prone to vertigo, you might want to think about including Gorges du Fier in your travel plans for Annecy. It’s a small canyon, a natural marvel filled with wonders nestled between the rocks.

In Gorges du Fier, spectacular rock formations are observed from the wooden walkways attached to the canyon walls.  But if there’s something you can’t miss here, it is Mer des Rochers. It is the gorge’s vast labyrinth of fissured rock through which the river Fier gently flows.

Annecy France, Gorges du Fier

When the sun shines brightly, Gorges du Fier reveals a delightful array of colors. The rocks glisten in a golden hue and the small patches of grass and moss seem to glow in a magical light. The gorge’s legends are shared on signboards throughout the area, enhancing the mystical atmosphere. Expect to spend around an hour exploring Gorges du Fier.

Additional information (visiting hours and admission fees) can be found on their official website .

When to Visit Annecy

Similar to other destinations in the Alps, the summer is the best time to go to Annecy if you want to experience both the city and outdoor activities. However, if capturing beautiful scenes or admiring city beauty is your thing, spring should be your choice. The historic center of the city is decorated with vibrant flowers during this time.

You might also consider visiting during the shoulder season when there are fewer tourists but remember to check the weather forecast.

How to Visit Annecy?

If you’re looking for Annecy, grab a map and focus on eastern France. Annecy is in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, specifically in the Haute-Savoie department. You’ll find it in the northwestern part of the Alps, also known as the French Alps. Spot a lake with a town to its north? That’s Lake Annecy and the town of Annecy.

Even though Annecy is in France, it’s actually closest to Geneva, a city in Switzerland. It’s just 43 kilometers or 27 miles south of Geneva. You can get from Geneva to Annecy in as little as 30 minutes by car. If you’re more into public transport, there are buses and trains that run directly between the two cities. The journey usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on traffic.

If you’re already in major French cities like Paris or Lyon (the gateway to the Alps) , there’s no need to go through Geneva to reach Annecy. From Paris, you can take a direct train to Annecy. If you choose to travel via TGV, the high-speed trains, you’ll be in Annecy in less than 4 hours. Traveling from Lyon? There are also trains available between these two cities, and the journey to Annecy will take approximately 2 hours.

You may get more information about these train rides to Annecy on sncf.com (state-owned railroad system of France). Tickets can be booked from their website.

You might also want to check out Avignon . It’s a city in southern France that was once the home of the popes in the 14th century. It’s another great place to visit from Lyon, just like Annecy.

How Many Days in Annecy?

If you’re planning a trip to Annecy, the duration can vary from a single day to a full four days, depending on what you want to see and do. A three-day stay is usually enough to experience the city’s unique attractions and engage in some exciting outdoor activities.

On your first day, take a leisurely stroll around Old Town, sample some local cuisine, and end your day at Basilique de la Visitation for a breathtaking sunset view of Lake Annecy. The second day is all about immersing yourself in Annecy’s culture by visiting Le Palais de I’Île and Musée-Château d’Annecy. Wrap up the day with a relaxing walk along the beach at sunset. The third day is reserved for outdoor fun – think hiking, water sports, or even paragliding!

If you have an extra day, consider exploring nearby attractions like Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Gorges du Fier, or take a day trip to other French Alps destinations like Chamonix.

If you don’t have a place to stay yet, here’s where you can find the best hotel deals in Annecy .

How to Get Around Annecy

Like other European cities, Annecy is easy to navigate on foot or by public transportation. Actually, the compact nature of Annecy’s city center makes it perfect for a leisurely stroll. It’s a fantastic way to soak up the city’s captivating charm. If you’re only planning to visit Old Town Annecy and the lakeside promenades, a car rental isn’t necessary.

For longer distances, you can utilize the city’s extensive bus network that reaches various parts of the city and even the shores of Lake Annecy.

However, if your adventures take you further afield, renting a car could be beneficial. Just bear in mind that driving in the old town with its narrow streets and tight corners can be tricky during busy times. For more information about getting around Annecy, please visit the official website of the city .
