What People Are Saying About Apostle Islands

Took the cruise in late June in near perfect weather so we were able to fully enjoy the sea caves and lighthouse cruise on the catamaran. The captain provided a lot of narration that was informative and fun. Lots of Dad-worthy jokes. The scenery was beautiful and it was nice to learn about the various islands as we passed by. Saw two lighthouses and the captain was good to turn the boat around so people on both sides could get good views and picture. The sea caves were fascinating to see.

Looking for the best things to do in the Apostle Islands and Bayfield? From the best places to hike near Bayfield, how to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves, to the best family-friendly beaches in the Apostles, I’ve got you covered!

Why me? Hi! my name is Maddy, and I’m a five year Lake Superior paddler, with two + years of guiding in the Apostle Islands! I’ve been to every single island except Eagle, the Twins, and Long, and I’ve done every single activity on this list (except sailing, because I am a broke paddling guide). This article is designed to help you find the best things to do in the Apostle Islands for your skill and comfort level.

Best Things to do in the Apostle Islands & Bayfield

Bayfield and the Apostle Islands are on the land of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. Keep in mind when recreating that many of the areas in the Apostle Islands and throughout the Bayfield Peninsula have cultural and historical significance. For this reason especially, be sure to pack out everything you bring including toilet paper, orange peels, ect. Avoid crushing plant life, “improving” trails or campsites, and stay on the trail when hiking.

It was not until the year 2021 that the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe flag was raised at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Visitor’s Center.

Climbing the cliffs and caves within the Apostle Islands is prohibited by the National Park. Be aware that conditions on Lake Superior are unpredictable and water temperatures extremely cold. Watch young children closely when swimming.

Note! This post contains affiliate links . This means if you buy something based off my recommendation, I may make a small kickback at no additional cost to you.

What to pack for an Apostle Islands Trip:

Summers on Lake Superior can be chilly! I recommend packing warmer than you expect. For a list of what to pack for kayak camping specifically, visit 15 tips for beginner kayak campers .

  • 2 lightweight, long hiking pants. I wear a size 8 and am short, and find the  REI trailmade  to be super flattering as well as the  Kuhl freeflex .
  • A pair of  shorts , and  yoga pants with pockets
  • A fleece. Any fleece will do, but I really love my  Patagonia Synchilla
  • Wool baselayers. Five years of heavy paddling and my  Smartwool baselayers  are the only wool baselayers I’ve had that have really stood the test of time. For seven days, pack four baselayer tops.
  • Study hiking boots. I like my  Briger Mids.  Working in outdoor retail I literally never had anyone try on these shoes and not buy them. Pair with  Darn Tough  hiking socks and pack at least five pairs. In the alpine areas,  trekking poles  are also a great choice!
  • hiking sandals
  • Quick dry shots: I like Patagonia Baggies
  • A puffy jacket. It can be cool even in the summer near the lakeshore, especially evenings. My partner Andy (also a wilderness guide) swears by the  Patagonia Nano Puff . I like my  Helly Hansen Liftloft .
  • If camping, a tent, packable sleeping bag ( Nemo Disco ) and pad ( comfortable sleeping pad ):  Read my budget tent recommendations here!
  • A day hiking pack: I love my  Perimeter 35L . I was gifted this pack a few years back and it’s still my go-to day pack; a savvy packer can easily pack for a seven day hiking trip in this bag.
  • A raincoat. I love the  Moss Raincoat from Helly Hansen ; It’s affordable, cute, and super durable.

30) Hike the Meyers Beach Sea Caves Lakeshore Trail

If you can only do one thing while visiting Bayfield, you should hike the Meyers Beach Sea Caves Lakeshore Trail ! This trail is an out-and-back with moderate uphills leading to beautiful overlooks of the Apostle Islands Sea Caves. A five dollar parking fee is required at Myers Beach.

apostle island day trip

Check out “The Crack” one of the largest sea caves on Lake Superior, from above on the Apostle Islands Lakeshore Trail! Photo shot on iPhone and edited with my “ Forest Light” preset . Use the code APOSTLEISLANDS20 for 20% off my Adventure Preset Pack (10 presets, compatible with Lightroom mobile and desktop).

Keep in mind on summer weekends this parking lot fills to capacity! Come before 10am to snag a parking spot or after 4pm. Because this hike is an out and back, milage depends on how you hike out. Most of the best overlooks can be reached in around 4-5 miles of hiking round trip.

29) Guided Sea Kayak Tour of the Meyers Beach Sea Caves

Wondering how to visit the best sea caves in the Apostle Islands ? Some of the biggest and easiest to reach sea caves in the Apostle Islands can be accessed from Meyers Beach. In order to do this paddle safely, book a guided tour.

apostle island day trip

Why should I book a guided tour of the Apostle Islands Sea Caves?

Look, I get it. These tours are expensive, and you bought a Wilderness Systems Pungo , why would you book a tour? You’re an experienced kayaker, heck you’re on Lake Minnetonka with a Miller Lite every weekend.

Meyers Beach is in a bay. It’s about a mile paddle to the first cliffs, and farther than that to the first caves. Right around the time you reach Keyhole Arch, you’re suddenly more exposed to the northeast and southwest, directions which the wind rises from about 1/2 the time every summer afternoon. It doesn’t take very much wind to kick up 1-2 foot waves, which hit the cliffs, bounce off, and double up.

It only takes one mistake to capsize your Pungo or Sundolphin, or god forbid inflatable kayak. Once you’re out of an open cockpit kayak, it will fill with water and sink . In 50 degree water, which the water here often is even in the summer, you have 10 minutes until hypothermia makes self rescue impossible and about an hour until you become fully unresponsive.

Waves at the Sea Caves at the Lakeshore Trail, a hiking trail near Bayfield Wisconsin

It’s a mile or more swim back to the beach. And it’s really important to note that if you did not book a guided tour, the guides out there have to take care of the safety of their group before they help you. There’s enough people at Meyers that someone will contact NPS for you and there’s a good chance you’ll be rescued in time. But that is not a guarantee.

Just book a guided tour. I recommend Lost Creek Adventures , Trek & Trail , or Whitecap Kayak . Trek & Trail also offers safety courses; if sea kayaking is a skill you want to learn, take a safety course with them!

Why shouldn’t I bring my kids sea kayaking to the Apostle Islands Sea Caves?

Most safe outfitters will not take children under 14 sea kayaking on Lake Superior in tandem kayaks. If an outfitter is willing to do this, this is a red flag! Children under 14 are usually put in triple kayaks as it takes two people capable of responding to instructions and paddling in an emergency to safely kayak on Lake Superior. No safe outfitter will take out children under five in any circumstances.

While kayaking on Lake Superior on a calm day is a treat, it still comes with risks! Here, we’re racing an electrical storm back to the beach.

28) Go to Applefest

Every fall, apple-lovers descend on Bayfield looking to eat apple fry bread, hear live music, and drink spiked cider! While most people visit Bayfield in the summer, check out Applefest for fall colors and one of the most lively events way Up North.

27) Day Trip to Madeline Island

A Madeline Island day trip is one of the best things to do when visiting Bayfield! Grab drinks at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe , head out to Big Bay State Park to swim and hike, or bike the island!

Visiting Madeline Island

Me, Madeline, on Madeline Island!

While there is lots to do on Madeline Island for adults, the island is not particularly kid friendly. Families with kids will have better luck sticking to Bayfield.

26) check out copper crow distillery .

Tucked away in the woods in Red Cilff, Wisconsin, Copper Crow is the first Native-owned distillery in the United States, and it alone is a bucket list worthy trip! From the picturesque woodland setting, to the unique and delicious drinks, Copper Crow Distillery is the best place to unwind after a long hard day on the water.

One of my favorite things to do in Bayfield is to grab a hammock and head to the Copper Crow to spend an afternoon relaxing in the pines with a drink.

25) Visit Balancing Rock on Stockton Island

Looking for what is easily one of the seven natural wonders of Lake Superior? Head out to Stockton Island to check out Balancing Rock, a unique Lake Superior sea stack.

Stockton Island can only be reached by water! To paddle it, you’ll either want to book a guided overnight kayaking trip, or take a shuttle out!

24) visit the cornucopia beach.

Looking for the best family-friendly beach in Bayfield? Pack a picnic blanket and head to Corny Beach in Cornucopia for shallow, warmer water swimming on Lake Superior in the adorable fishing town of Cornucopia. This beach is not far from Meyers Beach, but just as nice and likely to be much less crowded.

Corny Beach is also one of the best places to view the Northern Lights in Bayfield! Bring a picnic blanket and watch the northern horizon!

23) Camp on Oak Island

Looking for one of the best campsites in the Great Lakes Region? The north beach campsite on Oak Island (permits required, most accessible to sea kayakers) is the most beautiful place to camp in the Apostle Islands.

This beachside campsite has direct swimming access, Lake Superior views, nearby hidden caves to kayak, and expansive views of the outer ring of the Apostle Islands to the north. Guided overnight kayak tours are the best way to reach this beautiful campsite! While camping here, hike up to the Oak Island Apostles Overlook at sunset to watch the light fade over the islands from above!

22) Take a Hardcore Day Trip to Sand Island

Most visitors head to the Meyers Beach sea caves! The Meyers Beach Caves are some of the largest and most impressive sea caves, but tend to be crowded. Did you know that most of the 21 Apostle Islands have sea caves on them?

kayaker explores the sea caves of sand island in the apostle islands national lakeshore, a four hour drive from Minneapolis

Sand Island is home to some of the deepest and darkest sea caves, offering passage deep into the island. Book a long day trip out to Sand Island with Lost Creek Adventures . On this trip, you’ll kayak nine miles in potentially difficult conditions, check out beautiful sea caves, and even hike to the Sand Island historic lighthouse.

A day trip to Sand Island is one of the best things to do in the Apostle Islands for adventure enthusiasts looking for a wild story!

21) Visit Howl Adventure Center for Live Music

Howl Adventure Center is the coolest new thing in Bayfield, WI for outdoor lovers! Here you can both shop for and demo gear, and in the evening you can snack on local food truck tacos, have a beer and listen to live music by a campfire.

Bucket-list stay in Bayfield: St. James Social Historic Hotel

Looking for the perfect unique stay in downtown Bayfield? Head to the newly restored historic St. James Social . Here you’ll find luxury rooms, a sauna and cold plunge, rooftop lounge, and more.

apostle island day trip

St. James Social is a boutique hotel meets luxury hostel with private rooms but a social sauna and lounge available as well as a restaurant and bar downstairs.

20) Paddle to Honeymoon Rock

Looking for a unique place to kayak in the Apostle Islands? Book a full day Basswood Island trip with Trek & Trail to check out the unique Honeymoon Bluff sea stack, paddle over the Fedora shipwreck and sample some of best paddling on Lake Superior!

Paddling to Honeymoon Rock is one of the best things to do in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for outdoorsy people looking to head off the beaten path.

19) Take a Cruise with Apostle Islands Cruises

One of the best things to do in the Apostle Islands that isn’t kayaking is to take a cruise of the Apostle Islands . Cruises will take you out into the islands to sightsee. A cruise is the best way to see the beautiful and remote Devil’s Island sea caves without paddling out to them.

The cruise line sometimes offers backpacker shuttles to Stockton and Oak Island but has not been offering these options in recent years. As of 2023, there are no commercial backpacker shuttles out into the Apostle Islands. If you hear otherwise please let me know so I can update this!

THE 2024 UPDATE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: Hop on that shuttle baby , you can now backpack Stockton and Oak again! Thanks Elizabeth from Trek and Trail for the update!

A few tips for Cruising the the Apostle Islands:

Bring extra layers! As you head out to the Outer Ring of Islands, you will experience as much as a 20 degree temperature change.

This trip might be boring for small children. A cruise of the Apostles is a three hour sit and sightsee and listen.

18) Make it Your Life’s Goal to Reach Devil’s Island

Devil’s Island is arguably the most beautiful of the Apostle Islands, and it’s also the hardest island to reach. Exposed to almost every wind direction, Devil’s Island is often blasted by waves. Once on one of the tours I guided a participants got mad when he realized we weren’t going to Devil’s Island (there are no day trips that go to Devils).

Sea Kayaking Devils Islands Sea Caves Apostle ISladns Bayfield

I laughed.

In my two years of guiding in the Apostle’s, I never made it out to Devil’s Island. In order to sea kayak Devil’s Island, you pretty much need at least three days and perfect wind conditions. You can’t just decide you want to kayak to Devil’s Island on a certain day. That’s not how Lake Superior works.

I finally made it to Devil’s Island in the summer of 2021 as an expedition member on this National Geographic Trip. I got to spend three whole days camping on and helping photograph the island, and it was incredible. (The campsite is closed but we had park permission to camp on the Island). The caves themselves were incredible, but even more incredible was the ecosystem. There were massive birds and huge snowshoe hares, mushrooms and species of plants only seen in the arctic, leftover from the last ice ages that have survived on the chilly shore of Lake Superior, literally frozen in time. For more on local lore & natural history, check out the end result article here !

Here’s the best way to visit Devil’s Island in the Apostle Islands:

The best way to get out to Devil’s Island in the Apostle Islands is to literally make it a lifelong goal. Start by booking a 1-2 night overnight trip to gain kayaking experience. Take a safety course. Book an outer ring overnight kayaking trip. If you don’t make it out the first time, book another trip for the next year. Eventually you’ll make it to Devil’s.

And I promise you, there is nothing sweeter than experiencing the natural cathedral that Devil’s Island is than being denied entry a few times, and then finally, by the power of your own kayak, making it out to that incredible place. It’s totally worth it. Plus now that you’ve got all that experience you can sign up for some of the other hardcore adventure kayak trips in the Great Lakes. The Pukaskwa is calling.

12) Visit Honest Dog Books

Wondering what to do in downtown Bayfield? Honest Dog Books is a Bayfield must-visit. Owned by Paddling to Winter author Julie Buckles, this independent bookstore I the perfect place to spend a whole afternoon browsing the shelves.

Read this Bayfield Book:

Looking for a fun local read? Check out The Haunting of Brynn Wilder , set in downtown Bayfield. The Haunting of Brynn Wilder is objectively the worst book I’ve ever read. Having lived in Bayfield made it laughably funny and an altogether enjoyable experience to read. A real gem. In this absolute masterpiece, Brynn Wilder flees to Bayfield to escape in the words of her doctor (lol) the “worst trauma anyone has ever experienced” (or something like that). (The trauma being her mother dying and the end of a romantic relationship).

She arrives at Grunke’s to stay for the summer, where she meets a mysterious man who she falls in love with (who is later revealed to be an angel?) and experiences some spooky events!! The entire plot is a roller coaster, there is virtually no horror, and more happens in the last three pages of the book than the first 200.

10/10 must read for Bayfield lovers. Watch this review after you read. Can’t recommend enough, you will cackle.

Image of the front of a sea kayak and two sea kayakers on Lake Superior in front of the cliffs and caves of the Apostle Islands sea caves

11) Get Smoked Fish

No trip to Bayfield is complete without sampling local smoked whitefish from one of the many, many fisheries in the area. Pick up some brown sugar smoked salmon and crackers and head down to the beach to nibble in the sun.

10) Eat at the Fat Radish

Check out the Fat Radish in Washburn for one of the best places to eat near Bayfield! The Fat Radish has delicious farm to table healthy food. This is a popular restaurant so reservations are recommended.

Can’t get in? No worries. Order food to-go and picnic on Friendly Valley Beach.

9) Kayak to the Fedora Shipwreck

Looking for a beginner sea kayak trip on Lake Superior? Kayak to the Fedora Shipwreck launching from the Red Cliff Casino. While this route still sometimes sees big waves, this route is more likely to be calm than many of the other kayaking routes on Lake Superior, and great for people with L2+ coastal kayaking experience looking to experience Lake Superior.

sea kayaking over the shallow wreck of the Fedora in Bayfield Wisconsin easy kayaking

This is an alternate tour site for many of the Meyers Beach sea caves tours, and some outfitters offer this route as a longer paddle as a half day trip.

While this trip is more beginner-friendly , I still do not recommend kayaking on Lake Superior without a sea kayak and ACA L2-3 experience OR an experienced guide ! This is a beginner trip for sea kayakers, but could still quickly become a dangerous trip for beginner kayakers, particularly when strong south winds, east winds, or northeast winds are involved.

Don’t believe me about big waves on Lake Superior? Keep scrolling!

8) Watch a Gale from the Meyers Beach Lakeshore Trail

One of the best things to do in Bayfield if your kayak tour get cancelled is to hike the Meyers Beach Lakeshore Trail. This is especially true if your kayak tour was cancelled well in advance! That means that there are probably very big waves at the sea caves, and you can watch them roll in from above!

Image of a Gale and Large waves at the Apostle islands sea caves on Lake Superior

That’s about a 30ft cliff there! On the left hand side of the photo, there’s a five ft tall sea arch that is completely covered by the wave itself. Sea spray from the wave reaches the top of the cliff.

7) Canoe Bark Bay Slough

Bark Bay Slough is a unique Lake Superior coastal slough filled with floating islands, and the perfect place for protected paddling. Bark Bay is the best spot in Bayfield to kayak without a guide.

6) Mountain Bike Mount Ashwabay

Mountain Biking Mount Ashwabay is one of the best adventurous things to do near Bayfield, Wisconsin. Here you’ll find plenty of single track loops of varying difficulty levels. From the top of Mount Ashwabay check out sweeping views of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.

2) Visit Coco’s Bakery in Washburn

1) Overnight Sea Kayak the Outer Ring of the Apostle Islands

The absolute best way to see the Apostle Islands is to book an overnight sea kayaking trip into the islands! I recommend Lost Creek Adventures , Trek & Trail , or Whitecap Kayak for overnight tours.

Outer Ring Trips are generally best suited for people with sea kayak camping experience, but they really are the experience of a lifetime. Camp on remote island beaches, cook over a fire, swim in the moonlight, and paddle some of the secret sea caves on the outer Apostle Islands.

To experience the best views in the the Apostle Islands, book a 4-7 day overnight sea kayaking trip!

Frequently Asked Questions on How to Visit the Apostle Islands and Bayfield:

I’ve been asked lots of questions on how to visit the Apostle Islands and how to visit Bayfield! Hopefully the list above answered what the best things are to do in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands! Here are a few more frequently asked questions about visiting Bayfield:

Where can I rent kayaks in Bayfield, WI?

No safe outfitter will rent kayaks for Lake Superior without proof of an ACA Coastal Kayaking safety course . This is true throughout the whole of Lake Superior. Outfitters renting kayaks for Lake Superior without safety courses are not operating within the recommendations of the American Canoe Association or Coast Guard– because these outfitters have already shown disregard for safety guidelines on Lake Superior, I personally would be suspicious of the safety of the equipment rented.

See point 13 for how to take a safety course in order to rent kayaks for the Apostle Islands sea caves.

Kayaking Sand Island Sea Caves in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

The easiest way to check if an outfitter operates safe kayaking tours is to read the reviews! If they have negative reviews detailing shady behavior (ie, taking money and not calling back, unclear directions on where to meet, multiple stories of irresponsible guides) you might want to skip. In addition, you can call in advance and ask if guides are certified or trained with with the American Canoe Association. Often, ACA certification requirements are clearly indicated on the outfitters website.

For example, on Trek & Trail’s website it clearly states in the bottom right footer it clearly states “each spring (and weekly training meetings) our guides and mentors work through ACA Level 1-3 and WFA certification”.

How likely is my Apostle Islands Sea Caves tour to be cancelled?

That’s really hard to say. Waves are more likely to pick up in the afternoon than in the morning, and cancelling a tour is generally at the discretion of your guide. Check the marine forecast to gauge potential waves in the area. Generally, a forecast of waves 2 ft or less means your tour is a go ! A forecast of 1-3 feet means your tour will be choppy and you won’t be able to enter smaller caves. Your tour might be cancelled. A three foot wave is tall enough that if there is a wave between you and your guide, they will not be able to see you.

No beginner kayak tours should head out intentionally in waves larger than three feet. On overnight tours, you may encounter larger waves at the discretion of the guides.

Nervous about your Apostle Islands kayak trip? Talk to your guide! Your guide will not take you anywhere unsafe! In two years of commercial guiding on Lake Superior I’ve only had three boats capsize– one on an overnight, and two on day trips in relatively calm water (looking over the edge of the boat!). I’ve never had anyone capsize on a private tour (I’m currently not doing custom tours anymore!).

When is the best time of year to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves?

Late July and Early August see warmer water temperatures and more calm days than the rest of the year. My favorite time to visit is September when the crowds die down, but you are more likely to experiences waves in this time. Objectively, late summer is the best time of year to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves.

Hiking boots and a yellow flower on a Cliff overlooking Lake Superior

How much should I tip my kayak guide in the Apostle Islands?

For a half day trip in the Apostle Islands, tip your kayak guide at least ten dollars per person in your group . On a full day trip, tip around fifteen dollars per person in your group . For an overnight sea kayaking trip, tip your guide at least twenty dollars per person, per day or more . On overnight tours keep in mind that your guide is cooking and cleaning for you as well as keeping you safe on the water.

Is Bayfield, Wisconsin a Good Place to visit with Kids?

While there are things to do with kids in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, Bayfield is not a super kid-friendly destination. Most safe outfitters will not book young kids on kayak tours, and most of the things to do in the area are either very active or involve drinking.

The North Shore of Lake Superior might be a more kid friendly destination with easier hikes and lots to do with children.

Numerous campsites along the shores, bike paths, and picnic areas are some of the attractions you can expect. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Northern Wisconsin .

During winter, when the conditions are just right, it’s possible to visit the Apostle Islands’ ice caves. Getting there requires a two-mile hike on the ice of Lake Superior, which makes for a unique experience in itself!

It’s thus perfect when looking for cool things to do in Wisconsin in Winter .

12. Go fishing at Apostle Islands

Cool Things to do in Apostle Islands, WI, lake view in Apostle Island, wisconsin fishing lake

Fishing enthusiasts won’t be surprised to hear that Lake Superior is the perfect place for catching trout and salmon.

The best time to go fishing at the Apostle Islands is during Spring when the trout and salmon are most plentiful in these waters.

In fact, for this reason, it’s a fairly popular destination during spring break in Wisconsin for fishers.

As well as fishing along the mainland, you can also take a trip to one of the islands. The north side of Long Island is deemed to be one of the best fishing spots.

During the Summer, the best bet for catching a fish is targeting Lake Trout in deeper waters. In the summertime, the sportfishing area between Long Island and Madeline is a particularly popular spot.

A Wisconsin fishing license and a Great Lakes trout or salmon stamp are required for fishing in the Apostle Islands area.

Shipwrecks, underwater caves, and rock formations make the Apostle Islands a great spot for scuba diving. The National Park Service website provides detailed information about all the underwater points of interest, complete with GPS coordinates of each site.

The underwater cliff nick-named “The Wall” is particularly impressive. This submerged sandstone ledge drops suddenly to over 100 feet!

Diving in certain areas of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore requires a free permit, which can be obtained from the park headquarters in Bayfield. But it’s worth it because this is one of my favorite things to do in Apostle Islands!

14. Go Island hopping

As we’ve already seen, there are several ways to get from one island to another within the archipelago.

Whether you choose a kayak or a water taxi, a relaxed day or two spent island hopping will let you explore the area and see as many of the sights as possible.

Though they’re all close together, each island is slightly different. Some are entirely wild while others bear unmistakable marks of human presence, such as lighthouses and quarries.

Even if you’re stopping at each island only for a little bit, you’ll get a general idea of its topography and history.

If you haven’t decided how to spend your time in the Apostle Islands yet, island hopping is bound to provide plenty of inspiration.

15. Enjoy typical Wisconsin food

best things to eat in Apostle Island WI, Beer Battered Wisconsin Cheese Curds with Dipping Sauce

If you know anything at all about food in Wisconsin, it’s probably that the Friday night fish-fry is king.

And you’re not wrong! This traditional dish involves beer-battered fish served with chips, tartar sauce, rye bread, an onion slice, and coleslaw.

Another Wisconsin favorite is grilled “bratwurst” soaked in beer and onions, a dish known as ‘beer brats’.

The beer-and-onion mixture can include other ingredients, such as herbs and spices, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, or sugar. Try beer brats with a side of breaded cheese curds, another Wisconsin delicacy.

For a lighter option, order the awesomely named Chicken Booyah, a broth-based soup with vegetables and shredded chicken, highly popular in northern Wisconsin.

The Blue Moon ice cream is an absolute must-try for visitors to Wisconsin! The secret recipe for the bright-blue ice cream is a Wisconsin tradition, and the distinct flavor has been described as everything from marshmallows to pistachio and Froot Loops.

Apostle Islands Ice Caves on frozen Lake Superior, Wisconsin

Visiting South Shore is one of the top things to do near Superior, WI. Although this area is full of sites, there are three historic communities of particular interest: Cornucopia, Herbster, and Port Wing.

If you’re looking for things to do near Apostle Islands, these three coastal areas are a must when you visit Apostle Islands.

Cornucopia’s claim to fame is as Wisconsin’s northernmost town, but the historic port and Cornucopia Beach are also worth a visit. This is considered the gateway to the Apostle Islands, and anyone here will be able to assist you in how to get to Apostle Islands.

Herbster is the most popular of the three, and the Herbster Campground is one of the best alternative Apostle Islands camping options. It’s also worth a visit to the Bark Bay Slough State Natural Area where you can take apostle Islands kayaking trips.

Port Wing is the furthest from the Apostle Islands, but still a must for history buffs. Port Wing boasts two old historic churches, and a restored saloon. They’ve all been converted into art galleries, but maintain their original features.

I’ve already mentioned waples up above, but did yo know that there are more than 50 different varieties of apples available in the Apostle Islands and surrounding areas? So it’s no surprise they have countless apple-based dishes.

This Stuffed Baked Apple with Wild Plum Sauce recipe is absolute heaven!

If you prefer berries, be sure to try out some of the local jams! I also recommend buying a berry filled pastry at Gourmet Garage or Erickson’s Orchards & Country Store in Bayfield.

In addition to being well known for its beautiful rock cliff coastline and amazing sea caves, the Apostle Islands are also known for being one of the best places in America to go kayaking.  In fact, it is such a prolific kayaking destination that it attracts some of the best kayakers in the country, if not the world, each year.

Apostle Islands Kayaking

Located off the Bayfield Peninsula in Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands are a grouping of twenty-one islands that can be explored by boat or kayak.  Many of the islands have interesting sea caves dug into their shorelines and most have established hiking paths and campgrounds that visitors can use to explore the inland portions of the island.

For those who don’t want to get onto the water to explore the islands, the mainland of the Bayfield Peninsula also has some amazing hiking paths that allow visitors to get up close and see some of the extraordinary sea caves that the Apostle Islands are known for.  If you would prefer to just relax and enjoy your time in the area, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore also has some wonderful swimming beaches that visitors can enjoy.

And All You Need Apostle Islands Guide

In this Apostle Islands visitor guide, I am going to give you all of the information that you need to make sure your trip to the Apostle Islands is a success.  In addition to highlighting some of the top things to see and do in the area, I will also cover which times of year are best to visit, where I recommend staying while in the area, and some of the top restaurant options to check out while you are visiting.

What to pack for the apostle islands.

Apostle Islands Packing

Before you head off to the Apostle Islands, you will want to make sure that you are prepared.  To assist you in packing for your trip, I have put together a definitive Apostle Islands Packing Guide. This guide covers all of the essential items that you should bring with you, including camping and photography gear. For your convenience, I have linked to that guide in my Apostle Islands visitor guide below.

How to Get to the Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located in Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin.  While the closest big city to the Apostle Islands is the Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin metropolitan area, it is over an hour-long drive from Duluth to the islands.  The closest city with an abundance of hotel options would be Ashland, Wisconsin, which is located in the Southeastern part of the Bayfield Peninsula.

Apostle Islands Regional Map

In addition to the twenty-one islands that make up the Apostle Islands, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore also includes the long stretch of coastline on the northern part of the Bayfield Peninsula.  In fact, this stretch of coastline includes some of the best beaches in the Apostle Islands and has some of the area’s most famous sea caves.

Visitor Centers Are in Ashland and Bayfield

The visitor centers for the Apostle Islands are located in the cities of Ashland and Bayfield, which are two of the bigger cities on the Bayfield Peninsula, as well as on Little Sand Bay, which is located on the north shore of the Bayfield Peninsula.  While you can arrange to take a kayaking tour in Bayfield, the town of Cornucopia on the Northwest side of the Bayfield Peninsula is the closest city to the sea caves and is home to some of the most popular kayaking tour companies.

While the Apostle Islands are in Wisconsin, if you are visiting the lakeshore from outside of the Midwest United States, the best way to get there is to fly into neighboring Minnesota.  Duluth, Minnesota is the closest big city with an airport while the Minneapolis\St. Paul International Airport is the closest international airport to the Apostle Islands.

I have included a chart in my Apostle Islands visitor guide below that highlights the driving distance to the Apostle Islands from several larger cities in the Midwest United States.

Top Things to See and Do in Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands Kayaking

While the Apostle Islands are most well known for being a premier kayaking destination, there are several other fun things to do in the national lakeshore and in the surrounding area.

If you are looking for some fun things to do while you visit the Apostle Islands, I have included a list in my Apostle Islands visitor guide below of the top attractions and activities that I would recommend checking out while you visit.

Exploring the Sea Caves by Kayak

Apostle Islands Kayaking

Any list of the top things to see and do in the Apostle Islands should start with an adventure out on the waters of Lake Superior in a kayak.  After all, this is one of the premier kayaking locations in North America.  The following companies offer both kayak rentals and kayaking tours in the Apostle Islands.

Hiking the Rocky Shoreline

Apostle Islands Hiking

If you don’t feel like getting out on the water in a kayak, another option that you have for seeing the beautiful coastline and sea caves in the Apostle Islands is to do some hiking.  There are several great trails to explore in the Apostle Islands (both on the islands and on the mainland), but my favorite trail is undoubtedly the Lakeshore Trail which starts at Meyers Beach.  This trail takes you above some of the most amazing of the sea caves that the Apostle Islands are known for.

Take a Ferry to Madeline Island

Ferry to Madeline Island

If you would like to get onto the islands to explore, but you don’t want to get out in a kayak, then another option that you can explore is to take the car ferry to Madeline Island .  Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands and has a road system that you can use to travel from end to end.  The island also has several great hiking trails as well as a beautiful beach that visitors can enjoy.

Visiting Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Park

Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Park

To the Northeast of the Apostle Islands in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Park is another amazing wilderness area along Lake Superior that is definitely worth checking out.  The drive from Ashland, Wisconsin to the Porcupine Mountains State Park is roughly 90 miles and will take you about 1.5 hours, but it is well worth the drive.  The Porcupine Mountains remind me a lot of Acadia National Park in Maine as both parks have beautiful mountains near the shoreline and both parks have an abundance of amazing trails to explore.

Visiting Big Manitou Falls

Big Manitou Falls

If you like waterfalls, then you won’t want to miss nearby Big Manitou Falls as it is the tallest waterfall in the state of Wisconsin.  Located within Pattison State Park , which lies approximately 13 miles south of Lake Superior, this 165-foot-tall waterfall is an impressive sight to behold.

In addition to the waterfall, Pattison State Park has some pretty incredible hiking trails that you can explore as well.  If you are flying into or out of Duluth, Minnesota, Pattison State Park is just south of the adjacent city of Superior, Wisconsin, which makes it very convenient to visit on your way from the Apostle Islands.

Visiting Split Rock Lighthouse

Split Rock Lighthouse

If you are going to be flying in and out of Duluth, Minnesota, or if you are planning more than a weekend trip to the Apostle Islands, another great place that you can visit in the area is the Split Rock Lighthouse in northern Minnesota.

Located roughly an hour north of Duluth and roughly two hours from the Apostle Islands, the Split Rock Lighthouse is a great side excursion that you can take on your trip.  Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful lighthouses in North America, it is well worth the time to visit.

Visiting Gooseberry Falls

Gooseberry Falls State Park

Right next door to the Split Rock Lighthouse is another treasure of Northern Minnesota.  Gooseberry Falls is a series of beautiful waterfalls along the Gooseberry River as it makes its way to drain into Lake Superior.  In addition to the beautiful waterfalls, the state park also has some pretty amazing hiking trails that are worth exploring.

Just a ten-minute drive from Split Rock Lighthouse, it makes it really convenient to visit both of these sites together.  To give you an idea of where Gooseberry Falls is in relation to the Split Rock Lighthouse, I have included a map for you to review below.

Best Times to Visit the Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands Kayaking

Depending on what time of year you decide to visit the Apostle Islands, your experience could vary dramatically.  The summers can often be hot and humid while the winters can be bitterly cold.  To help you decide when it would be best for you to visit the Apostle Islands, I have included some important information on the average temperatures and precipitation levels below for you to review.

Average Temperature (°F)

As you can see in the chart below, the temperatures in the Apostle Islands can vary greatly throughout the year.  During the summer months of June through August, the temperatures can reach into the lower 90’s but typically stay between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit.  If you are planning on getting into the water or would like to go kayaking without a wetsuit, I would recommend visiting during these months as the water temperature will also be tolerable.

During November through late March, you can expect the daytime temperatures to be pretty cold.  This is especially thru during the winter months of December through February, where the temperatures will often dip well below freezing.  Although kayaking is out of the question during these months, this can be a great time to go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in the area.

Average Amount of Precipitation (Inches)

The Apostle Islands get a majority of their precipitation during the warmer months of April through October, with the wettest months being June through September.  If you are looking for the best chance of getting sunny days on your trip, I would suggest booking your trip sometime between early July and mid-August.  Even though you can still see the occasional shower, this tends to be the driest part of the summer.

Where to Stay Near the Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands Hotel

If you would like to stay near the Apostle Islands, your best bet is to do some camping.  There aren’t a lot of big towns in the direct vicinity of the Apostle Islands, so hotels are in very short supply.  There is a big resort in Red Cliff, which I highlight below, and several bed and breakfast establishments that you can explore.

If you would like to do some camping, I have included a map of some of the popular campgrounds for you to review in my Apostle Islands visitor guide below.

Apostle Islands Campgrounds Map

If you are looking to stay in the area, I would recommend starting your search in Ashland.  You will find a lot more hotel options there and it is only a 30-minute drive to Bayfield and a 45-minute drive to Meyer’s beach.  If you would like some recommendations on hotel options, I have included a list for you to review in my Apostle Islands visitor guide below.

Where to Eat Near the Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands Restaurant

Since I am recommending that you stay in Ashland when you visit the Apostle Islands, I am going to focus my restaurant recommendations on Ashland as well.  According to recent TripAdvisor reviews, here is a list of the most popular restaurants to eat at in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Kayaking in the Apostle Islands

Kayaking in the Apostle Islands is an adventure that I wanted to do for such a long time and I was finally able to find the time.  In case you are wondering what it is like to go on a kayaking adventure in the Apostle Islands, I put together a short video you can watch below.

Apostle Islands Photo Gallery

The Apostle Islands is such a beautiful area of North America.  I was able to get some really great shots of the sea cliffs, the infamous sea caves, and several other beautiful spots in the area that I have shared with you below in a photo gallery.

If you would like to see more of my travel photography, I would also encourage you to give me a follow on Instagram . Putting this blog together to pass on my free guides, itineraries, and travel photography tips is a lot of work and your support in the form of a follow-on Instagram would be so very much appreciated!

What to do Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

apostle island day trip

With stunning sea caves, dramatic sandstone cliffs and pristine beaches, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is truly a northern Wisconsin gem. Centuries of freezing, thawing and wave activity has sculpted a very unique shoreline here, making the scenery at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore unforgettable.  In addition to beautiful shoreline views (visible through hiking and sea kayaking), there are also several cute small towns to explore and inland hikes to take in the area.   After planning a trip to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore for several years, we are excited to share our ‘What to Do in Apostle Islands’ guide with you so can start planning a trip to the area of your own.

FYI: This post is written based on a trip taken in mid-August.

Go Sea Kayaking along Apostles Islands National Lakeshore

Apostle Islands Sea Kayaking

Our top recommendation on what to do on Apostles Islands National Lakeshore is to go sea kayaking.  We have been dreaming of kayaking these sea caves for years and the experience really lived up to our expectations. Pictures really do not do these picturesque sea caves justice.  Seeing the sea caves up-close and on the water is breathtaking.  Further, sea kayaking allows you to not only see these sea caves but to actually go in them!  We had so much fun kayaking into sea caves of all different sizes.  We really got a kick out of ducking down to get into some of the smaller sea caves. These tight caves stand in sharp contrast to the expansive nature of some of the bigger sea caves.

Tip: Go Sea Kayaking from Meyers Beach

There are several options on where you can start your sea kayaking tour.  Despite the options, we highly recommend picking a tour that leaves from Meyers Beach.  Logistically, this is the easiest trip to coordinate, as you do not have to take a ferry, and per the park ranger we spoke with, the prettiest sea caves of different tours offered.  You can also take sea caves tours from Sand Island and Madeline Island.

Apostle Islands Sea Kayaking

Book a Sea Kayaking Tour with Lost Creek Adventures

Although you could kayak from Meyers Beach without a guide, we highly recommend using one.  The outfitters can ensure the water conditions are safe, guide you through the stable sea caves (some are not stable and are at risk of collapse) and supply you with the right gear (sea kayak, wet suit (we needed even with air temps in the low 60s) and wet bag).

Here is a list of the certified Sea Kayaking Outfitters on Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.  We took a half day tour with Lost Creek Adventures Kayaking and would highly recommend using this company.  Our guides (shout out to Nat and Otis) were great and the group we went kayaking with was small (4 other double kayaks), making the outing more intimate and customized.  We got to explore so many sea caves on this half day trip and were able to go further on the shoreline than most groups due to having a group of relatively strong kayakers.  Our guides were also kind enough to snap and share some pictures of us kayaking from their phones too.  This half-day trip cost $83 per person and was worth every penny.

Apostle Islands Sea Kayaking

Tip: Go as early in the morning as possible for calmer waters

Per our research and the Apostle Island National Lakeshore park ranger we spoke with, the water at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is usually much more calm early in the morning.  Therefore, kayaking as early as possible in the morning will make your trip more enjoyable and less likely to be canceled.

Apostle Islands Sea Kayaking

Caution: Use a sea kayak while kayaking Apostles Island National Lakeshore

Due to the unpredictable and powerful nature of Lake Superior, use a sea kayak rather than a smaller kayak when kayaking here.  People have drowned kayaking the Apostle Islands so be sure to use the proper equipment to keep yourself safe.  Also, as recommended above, go kayaking with a guide so they can ensure the water conditions are safe for your trip.  They monitor the waters and will reschedule your trip if it is not safe to go.   The outfitter will also advise you when a wetsuit is needed for your trip (often needed due to cold Lake Superior temps).  Our use of wet suits was included in our rental price at Lost Creek.  Most of the outfitters include wetsuit in their base rental costs but be sure to check with the outfitter you use.

Hike from Meyers Beach above the Sea Caves

What to do Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Our next recommendation on what to do while visiting Apostle Islands is to hike from Meyers Beach above the sea caves. We loved hiking this trail!  It takes you to a spot where you can see some of the Apostle Islands Sea Caves and Lake Superior from above for about 0.5 miles.  This trail goes through the woods and is mainly shaded (we love a shaded trail) until you reach the sea caves at 1.8 miles.  At 1.8 miles, you reach the Crevasse, an impressive 100-yard-long fracture in the rocks.  We actually got to kayak into this sea cave on our kayak tour (see above).   You can continue on the trail until the 2.2 mile point for more sea cave views.  However, after that, the trail only leads to some remote campsite through the woods and there are no further views of the sea caves.

4.6 miles round trip, 269 feet of elevation gain, out & back

Cost: $5 fee to park (cannot use America the Beautiful Pass)

Dog Friendly Apostle Islands

Note: You can bring your dog hiking at Meyers Beach!

Unlike most trails at other National Lakeshores, such as Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , you can hike here with your dog.  Our pup loved exploring this trail!  See our Dog Friendly Apostle Islands Guide for more Dog Friendly recommendations in the area.

Looking for another dog friendly vacation? See our Dog Friendly Door County, Wisconsin Guide and our A Day at Starved Rock State Park guides.

We did this hike with Natalie’s parents and our dog.  It was a nice hike, not overly strenuous and had some great views of the sea caves without kayaking.  Natalie’s parents, who do not do much hiking, felt it to be very manageable for beginners.  They also were not disappointed with the views.  On the hike back from the sea caves, Natalie’s Dad was sure to tell each hiker we passed about the cool views.  It was adorable.

Meyers Beach Sea Cave Trail

Caution: Be careful as the edges along the trail may be undercut/slippery.  You don’t want to fall into the water from the trail.  It’s not a short fall!

Hike lost creek falls in apostle islands.

Lost Creek Falls Apostle Islands What to Do

Our third top recommendation on what to do in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is to hike Lost Creek Falls. This trail brings you through a peaceful wooded setting to a, more impressive than we expected, waterfall and small pool area.  The trail is well-maintained with some boardwalks. We did this hike in the morning and had the waterfall/pool area all to ourselves.  It was so pretty and serene!

2.2 Miles, 216 feet of elevation gain, out & back

Cost: Free to park

Note: Dogs are allowed to hike here too!

Our dog LOVED running through the pools of water around the waterfall at the ‘summit’ of this hike.  He was really living his best life zooming back and forth.  See our Dog Friendly Apostle Islands Guide for further dog friendly activities in the area.

Dog Friendly Apostle Islands

Tip: Bring good bug spray.

The bugs were actually not bad at all during our trip (we all got less than 3 bites on our 5 day trip) but most other people we know who have been here recommended good bug spray for this very wooded trail.  This is the non-chemical bug spray we use with our daughter.   This is the deet bug spray we use on ourselves.

Visit Madeline Island in Apostle Islands

Madeline Island

Our next what to do in Apostle Islands recommendation is to visit Madeline Island . Madeline Island is the largest and most developed of the 22 Apostle Islands. It is well known for its beaches and hiking trails/biking trails.  It also has some eclectic shops and restaurants.

Fun fact: Although Madeline Island is one of the 22 Apostle Islands, it is the only one not part of the National Lakeshore.

Madeline Island Ferry

Madeline Island Ferry

The journey to Madeline Island itself is half the fun. To access this island, you take the Madeline Island Ferry from Downtown Bayfield.  This ferry ride offers scenic views of Lake Superior, Bayfield, Madeline Island and some of the other Apostle Islands in the distance.  You can soak in all these views with your pup as the ferry is dog friendly.

Cost: $17 per person round-trip, $30 per car round-tip.  Dogs ride for free.  The ferry is a bit pricey but again, part of the experience.  See the Madeline Island Ferry Rates for the most up-to-date prices. If you are interested in more ferry ride experiences, see our, coming soon, Two-Week Fjords of Norway Road Trip.

Also, unless it is an extraordinarily busy weekend, you typically do not need to book this ferry in advance.  Just arrive about 15-20 minutes before the time you would like to depart and you should have no problem getting on the ferry you want. See the Madeline Island Ferry Schedule for the most up-to-date times.

Tip: Get ice cream in La Pointe on Madeline Island before heading back to Bayfield to enjoy on the ferry ride back

Town Park and Bog Bay State Park

Visit Town Park and Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island

While on Madeline Island, be sure to visit the parks here–Town Park and Big Bay State Park. Town Park and Big Bay State Park both offer some nice trails to explore the beaches and woods on Madeline Island.  The boardwalk between Town Park and Big Bay State Park was our favorite trail here.  The trail is about 2 miles long.  It is mostly shaded, the breeze from the lake is perfect and the boardwalks are very well-maintained.  You can also hike around the lake here.  See map below from this trail as well as others on the island.

 Madeline Island Map

Visit La Pointe, Downtown, Madeline Island

The downtown area here is eclectic and artsy with some cute shops, galleries and restaurants.  Note, hours are very limited and variable at the shops here. If you are looking for a dog-friendly spot, visit the Inn on Madeline Island (stay overnight with your pup or eat at the Pub Restaurant on the patio).

Explore Cornucopia in Apostle Islands

apostle island day trip

Cornucopia is another artsy and eclectic small town located near Meyers Beach/Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.  There are several small boutique and resale shops here as well as a few restaurants on the main street.  The harbor area is very picturesque along Lake Superior.

For a more high-end meal in a casual environment, try eating at the Fat Radish Restaurant in Cornucopia.  This restaurant is known for its tasty farm-to-table dishes.  Note that this restaurant has limited evening hours (Wed-Sun) and brunch hours (Sun only).

We actually visited during Cornucopia days (mid-August) so there was also a flea market and fundraiser food sale going on at the time. We felt like a local exploring this town celebration.

Apostle Islands Cruise

If you want to see the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore beyond Madeline Island and without kayaking, taking an island cruise is the best way to do it.  The National Park Service offers narrated scenic cruises and shuttles to different islands.  In addition to the cruises offered by the National Park Service, you can also take a private water taxi or boat.

Apostle Island Cruises & Charters

Visit an Orchard & Apple or Berry Pick

While we were in the Bayfield area, blueberries were in season for picking and we went to Blue Vista Farms .  We picked the most delicious blueberries we have ever tasted here.  The price was reasonable and the little farm store on site was adorable too (if you are looking for some prepared local products).  Be sure to check the farm website for hours prior to visiting though as they are limited.

apostle island day trip

There are tons of farms in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Bayfield area.  Many of them are located close to each other. Each has unique offerings and different hours to help fit your schedule/interests. Some other options include:

  • Erickson’s Orchard
  • Hillcrest Orchards
  • Rocky Acres Berry Farm
  • Bayfield Apple Company
  • Good Earth Gardens
  • Sunset Orchard Valley
  • Hauser’s Superior View Farm

Explore Bayfield

Bayfield is a charming small-town on the largest Great Lake.  This town is very walkable with many cute small shops and restaurants.  It reminded us of the shops and restaurants in the small towns in Door County. Plan to spend a morning or an afternoon here.  Be sure to get a rhubarb scone at Big Water’s Bakery!

Visit Friendly Valley Beach

This beach located South of Bayfield is a little hidden gem that our accommodations host told us about. If you are looking to spend some time at the beach but do not want to spend the money it costs to go to Madeline Island, this is the way to do it! You can walk along the beach and out onto some sand bars that go into the lake.  Parking here is free.

Friendly Valley Beach Location

Visit Delta Diner

This restaurant is more than just a meal, it’s an experience.  Delta Diner is a throwback to 1940’s east coast diners and looks like something straight out of the 1940s.  Although we did not get to try this place during our visit due to limited Thu-Sun hours (see website), we hope you get a chance to get a meal here during your visit.

This restaurant is another activity our accommodations host told us about!  Katie at Mission Springs Resort is really a great resource for activities and any questions you may have about your visit to the area.

Where to Stay Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

apostle island day trip

We highly recommend staying at Mission Springs Resort in Ashland, about 20 minutes south of Bayfield and 30 minutes southeast of Meyers Beach.  This resort is close enough to all of the activities in the area yet tucked away from the hustle and bustle. It is truly the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.  This resort has been family owned and operated for over 75 years.  It is family friendly and all the accommodations are dog friendly.   And with charming cottages and a large modern lake house, there is something to fit everyone’s accommodations needs.  Located right along the Lake Superior shoreline, you’ll be hard pressed to find another spot with better views to drink your morning coffee.  For more on staying at this place, please see our Where to Stay Near Apostle Islands National Lakeshore post.

Call or text Katie at 715-209-8321 for availability or visit the Mission Springs Resort website for the best price and most up to date availability.  Katie is a great resource while visiting the area and during your stay as well.  She is a fantastic host, allowing you your space yet is available for any questions!

Our Wander-Filled Life

One Day at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Last Updated on September 5, 2023 by Grant

As the home to one of the country’s best collections of historic lighthouses and unique sandstone formations, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is more about the lake than the shore. Indeed, the park includes 21 islands and only a thin 12 miles along the mainland shore. Without our own boat, one day at Apostle Islands was more than enough to enjoy this rugged Wisconsin park.

On our Great Lakes road trip , Grant and I spent nearly two weeks along the shores of Lake Superior. At both Pictured Rocks and Apostle Islands National Lakeshores, the power of this grand lake is evident. In the Apostle Island NL park brochure, commercial fisherman Julian Nelson answered the question of “Who is the boss?” with this response:

“The lake is the boss. No matter how big you are or what kind of a boat you’ve got, the lake is still the boss. Mother Nature dictates a lot of things.” Julian Nelson

I couldn’t agree more. And, yes, Mother Nature did place her mark on our visit with an afternoon of thunderstorms.

The rocky shores of Apostle Islands.

What to Do at Apostle Islands NL

The main visitor center for Apostle Islands NL is located in Bayfield, WI. In contrast to many National Park visitor centers, there are not a lot of exhibits here but it is still a great stop. You’ll find the standard park film which tells the history of the area and some information about the park today.

A Fresnel Lens, a revolutionary lens for lighthouses in the 1800s.

Also be sure to check out the Fresnel Lens on display, which revolutionized the lighting in lighthouses in the 1800s. Many lights have since been updated, but you’ll still find the technology of the Fresnel Lens in use today in your vehicle’s headlights.

Once you’ve checked in at the visitor center, it’s time to get started exploring the Apostle Islands.

Hiking in Apostle Islands NL

With just a small stretch of land on the mainland, there is only one easy-to-access trail within the park. There are a few additional hiking trails on some of the islands, though. For the mainland trail, you’ll have to drive about 30 minutes northwest from Bayfield, past the Red Cliff Indian Reservation, for the 6-mile (one way) Lakeshore Trail.

Caves carved out by the sea and ice on Lake Superior at Apostle Islands NL.

Lakeshore Trail

From the trailhead at Meyers Beach, the Lakeshore Trail follows the coastline past “ice caves” to a campground. The first 0.7 miles of the trail is a relatively easy boardwalk through the trees. When the boardwalk ends, the standard dirt trail continues, with a few more ups and downs across several small streams.

Bonnie hiking on the boardwalk on the Lakeshore Trail at Apostle Islands NL.

At about 1.5 miles, you’ll finally reach the coastline, where you’ll be rewarded with a few views of Lake Superior. Keep going, though, for the really cool stuff!

At 1.8 miles you’ll reach the first ice cave. This first one juts into the mainland quite a bit, almost like a canyon. Follow the fencing around the ice cave and be sure to check out the steep walls and water below. When we were there, we found a few kayakers heading into the cave to explore.

Kayakers explore one of the ice caves at Apostle Islands.

It was at about this point in our hike that the thunder started. Sure enough, when we checked our phones, there was a thunderstorm headed right towards us. Thankfully, we had raincoats in our hiking packs, but we still didn’t like the idea of being caught outside in a storm on the shores of Lake Superior.

We quickly viewed a few more caves on the shoreline before turning around and heading back. If it weren’t for the rain, we probably would have continued another half-mile or so looking for more caves.

A life ring sits along the Lakeshore trail in case anyone needs rescuing

Thankfully, the rain somehow held off until we got back to the truck. But before we even got onto the main road we were in a torrential downpour. So much for more exploring. At that point, we just headed back to the campsite for the rest of the afternoon.

In all, we spent about 1.5 hours hiking a total of 3.5 miles.

Touring the Islands

Thankfully, we had scheduled our boat tour of the islands for the next evening. We certainly could have spent only one day at Apostle Islands NL, but since we were visiting over the Fourth of July, we gave ourselves an extra day.

Bonnie & Grant enjoy the cruise past Devil's Island.

Since we didn’t have our own boat, we turned to Apostle Islands Cruises , the official concessionaire of the park. We chose the sunset Grand Tour cruise. The narrated cruise took us through the islands, stopping for pictures at a few of them.

The highlight of the Apostle Islands is the northern shore of Devil’s Island. Here you’ll see sandstone caves carved by the wind and waves of Lake Superior. The boat spent plenty of time cruising past the shoreline giving passengers on both sides a chance to see these small cliffs and sea caves.

The lighthouse keeper's home on Devil's Island.

After Devil’s Island, we began the cruise back, passing by Raspberry Island along the way. On Raspberry Island, you’ll find one of the many historic lighthouses in the Apostle Islands. The lighthouses of the Apostle Islands act as a guide not just through the islands, but into the harbor at Ashland (about 20 miles south of Bayfield) and around the islands west to Duluth, MN.

The captain of our boat has lived in the Apostle Islands area for many years and even spent time as a volunteer with the National Park Service many years ago. His stories about living on the Apostle Islands and piloting tours through them held our attention throughout the cruise.

Sailing past Raspberry Island in the Apostle Islands.

We enjoyed the tour of the Apostle Islands, but, unfortunately, we had a cloudy evening and didn’t get the great light that you’d typically get at sunset. At least it wasn’t raining, though!

Other Things to Do at Apostle Islands NL

With more time (and better weather), there are plenty of other interesting things to do in the Apostle Islands area. As mentioned previously, there are hiking trails on several of the islands. Of course, you’ll need your own boat or you’ll need to pay for a ride there.

One of many bald eagles which nest in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

We considered doing a day trip to hike on one island but decided we’d rather spend our money doing the Grand Tour. I have to admit, seeing the north end of Devil’s Island was certainly a highlight! If we ever return, though, we’ll certainly spend more time hiking at least one of the islands. Apostle Islands Cruises does do a “shuttle service” to a couple of islands for both day trips and overnight camping.

The only Apostle Island not contained within the National Lakeshore is Madeline Island. It is the largest island and the only one with commercial development. Madeline Island is also home to Big Bay State Park. Like the other Apostle Islands, Madeline Island is only accessible by boat, but there is a vehicle/passenger ferry. Again, due to the transportation cost, we had to skip Madeline Island.

Sea stacks in the Apostle Islands.

Just north of Bayfield is Red Cliff Indian Reservation, which is home to Frog Bay Tribal National Park. Frog Bay is actually the first Tribal NP in the country. We planned to visit Frog Bay TNP, but, unfortunately, the rain spoiled that plan.

Where to Eat

While waiting for our sunset cruise, we stopped in at Maggie’s for a late lunch. Despite our 2:30 arrival, the small restaurant was nearly full. The interior is decorated with a Key West vibe, complete with bright colors and pink flamingos.

The bright pink building for Maggie's, a restaurant in Bayfield, WI.

I enjoyed the chicken salad wrap, which had a nice balance of flavors, though could have used a bit more salad inside the wrap. Grant had the Mexican burger, which was tasty, but also a little messy. While the food was good, the service was only mediocre.

After lunch, we still had about an hour before we needed to line up for our sunset cruise, so we headed over to the rooftop deck at Bayfield Inn. Located just a block from the water, the deck offered a fabulous view over the small city and the harbor. When we arrived, only the bar was still open (the kitchen closed at 3 pm), but drinks were all we needed, so we were happy!

Where to Stay

Somehow I completely overlooked the fact that we’d be visiting the Apostle Islands over the Fourth of July weekend. Thus, by the time I got around to reserving a campground, there was nothing available in the immediate area. There are a few city parks in the area that didn’t accept reservations, but we didn’t want to risk that on a holiday weekend.

Read our full review of the Drummond Lake Campground here.

Finally, I found a small city park in Drummond, about an hour south of Bayfield that accepted reservations and still had availability! It was a bit of a drive, but we really enjoyed the Drummond Lake Campground. The campground is managed by the public library, which is located right next door.

Bonnie taking a big bite of pizza at the Rivers Eatery in Cable, WI.

We stopped in to chat with the librarian after setting up camp and got some great information about the area and various things to do. If you’re into ATVs or snowmobiling, this is a great place to stay!

There isn’t much to the town of Drummond, but we did find a great pizza joint in the next town south. If you happen to stay here, we highly recommend The Rivers Eatery in Cable .

Final Thoughts on Apostle Islands NL

Of the three National Lakeshores (four, if you count Indiana Dunes , which is now a National Park), Apostle Islands NL is the one that you really do need a boat to truly explore. With only a small stretch of land on the mainland, there really isn’t much to see inside the park boundaries without getting out on the water.

Read more about the other National Lakeshores: Sleeping Bear Dunes NL | Pictured Rocks NL

Kayaking is a popular way to explore the sea caves. There are a number of outfitters that you can do a kayak tour through, but, honestly, we are still a little scared of kayaking on Lake Superior. With the thunderstorms that rolled through while we were there, I’m very glad we didn’t have a kayak tour planned, as it likely would have gotten canceled or cut short.

Devil's Island Light at Apostle Islands NL.

Bayfield is a cute little town that is not overly touristy, despite tourism being its number one draw. Still, we’ve seen better seaside (or, I suppose, lakeside) towns elsewhere.

If you’re interested in doing some overnight camping on the islands or have your own boat, you could certainly spend a few days exploring the Apostle Islands. Otherwise, one day at Apostle Islands NL is enough to do a hike on the mainland and a tour of the islands.

Travel Resources

What do you use to find a flight.

We use Skyscanner to find deals on flights. Skyscanner has a great interface and compares tons of airlines for the best pricing and routing. That said, it does not always have every airline and some airlines will have better deals on their website. Still, Skyscanner is a great place to start. Click here to search for a flight.

What do you use to find a hotel?

We typically stay at Hilton properties , so we use the Hilton website . You can find good Hilton Honors discounts or AAA discounts for a hotel there. We make great use of our free night certificates from our Hilton Honors American Express. Click here to book a Hilton property.

If there are no Hilton properties available, we use TripAdvisor to read reviews and book the hotel. We find we can get the best price that way. Click here to search for a hotel.

We recently partnered with Stay22 to add interactive maps to each of our destination posts. This will allow you to see a plethora of hotels and vacation rentals all in one responsive map of the area.

What if I need more space than I can get at a hotel?

We use Vrbo for the times when we have rented a cabin for a weekend getaway, like this cabin in Townsend, TN , or needed to rent a house for a large family vacation. We had a great experience with them in terms of refunding deposits when COVID hit and will continue to use them. Click here to search for a vacation rental.

Who do you use for rental cars?

As a general rule, we book with Hertz for rental cars. We have had nothing but good experiences with them. Plus, we really like unlimited mileage and not worrying about crossing state lines. We have even rented from Hertz overseas in both Slovenia and Croatia . Click here to book a rental car.

How about booking a cruise?

We have found some amazing prices for booking a cruise through Cruise Direct . We have saved a lot of money on our cruises compared to what we found elsewhere, making a last-minute Bahamas cruise even cheaper. Click here to book a cruise.

What if I want to rent an RV?

We highly recommend Outdoorsy for RV rentals. We rented a camper van for a week to visit Rocky Mountain National Park for the elk rut and Custer State Park for the Buffalo Round-Up and had a blast. The program was easy to use and we really enjoyed the freedom of having a camper van for that trip. Click here to rent an RV.

What do you use for booking tours?

We don’t often book tours. Typically, we like to do stuff on our own. That said, there are some experiences you can’t have any other way. So, when we do want to book a tour, we always check Viator first. Click here to book a tour.

Do you use anything to get discounts on the road?

We make extensive use of both Good Sam and AAA on the road. Good Sam is normally regarded as a discount card for RVers at campgrounds and Camping World but anyone can use the 5 cents off a gallon at the pump at both Pilot and Flying J. Click here to get a Good Sam membership. We have had AAA as long as we have been married and it has more than paid for itself in discounts at hotels, aside from the peace of mind of having roadside assistance. Add in paper maps and the ability to get an international driver’s license and it is more than worth it for any traveler out there. Click here to get a AAA membership.

One day at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is more than enough to hike the short mainland trail and view the islands on a cruise.

Our guides were amazing. Their focus on safety was non-stop, and their knowledge of the Lake and its geological features is impressive. I fully intend on doing another outstanding experience.

Our guide Michael was knowledgeable in kayaking, cave formation, and Lake Superior history. His enthusiasm made for a very enjoyable day.  We are definitely coming back next year!

Talia's Bucketlist

A 3 day trip to the apostle islands.

The Apostle Islands were on Johannes’s and my bucket-list ever since our close Chicago friends told us about this place in 2018. The stunning rock formations on Lake Superior just stuck in my head ever since. One of the main reasons it took us so long to visit the islands was the long drive (8h one way). A weekend is not enough time. For labor day this year in September we finally decided to drive up all the way to Bayfield in Wisconsin. In this blog post I will show you what we did during our 3 day trip to the Apostle Islands.

Where to stay?

We decided to stay the Seagull Motel in Bayfield and loved every minute of our stay. The hotel is owned and maintained by the nicest family. It is located right by Lake Superior and has a beautiful view on the lake. I loved waking up to the sunrise, especially seeing the lake and the sun rising from the bed. The motel offers parking right in front of the motel and all the restaurants can be reached by foot since Bayfield is not that big.

What to do?

The Apostle Island area is great to visit during summer, fall or winter. These seasons have all something to offer. During the winter time the lake freezes so you are able to walk across the lake and see some stunning ice formations. Fall on the other side offers a wonderful foliage up in Northern Wisconsin. If you want better weather and higher temperatures make sure to visit during the summer months. During our 3 day trip to the Apostle Islands we managed to do some hikes around the area as well as cruise.

Explore the Apostle Islands

There are so many ways to explore the Apostle Islands – from hiking, to kayaking or paddle boarding, or by boat. We personally did the boat tour and hiking but wished we would have done a kayak tour around the islands.

Take a Cruise

One way to explore the scenic area of the Apostle Islands is by taking a 55-mile cruise. It will show you the highlights of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Apostle Island Cruises has several cruise options to choose from. We did the Grand Tour, but to be honest, we would not this one again and rather do the Sea Caves and Lighthouse tour. The ticket costs about 50 dollars for adults and about 30 dollars for children (6-12years old). A great alternative is to do a sailing tour or go with a private tour. Dream Catcher Sailing offers Day Tours and Multi Day Tours. It is a little bit pricey but for sure a unique experience.

Kayaking across the Apostle Islands

A lot of people kayak around the Apostle Islands and this is probably the main thing to do. Your options are to either rent kayaks or do a tour. Since the weather was not great when we visited and the lake can get really rough and dangerous sometimes, we decided us against a kayak tour.

Here are several company that offer kayak rental and tours:

Lost Creek Adventures

Whitecap Kayak

Wilderness Inquiry

Kayak tours starts at about 60 dollars per person for a half day tour.

Hike Waterfalls

Meyers beach sea caves.

The Meyers Beach Sea Caves hike was one of our favorites and was also the longest. It offered several different views and never got boring. You get some incredible views over the caves and cliff.

Highlights : Hiking through boreal forest, the mainland sea caves, peering over the high cliffs, and Lake Superior views.  Watch for bears too!

Difficulty : Easy Length : 4-mile round trip to sea caves, 9-mile round trip to end of the trail

Houghton Falls Nature Preserve

This hike was super fun. You are hiking to the lake and get rewarded with are really nice view that must be beautiful for sunset, when the sun is setting behind the lake. We enjoyed the easy trail.

Difficulty : Easy Length : 1.3miles

Lost Creek Falls

The Lost Creek Fall Trail is a 2.2 mile roundtrip trail and is located near Cornucopia, Wisconsin. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best from May until October. We actually saw a black bear on the trail which was kind of exciting. The amount of water in the waterfall depends on the rainfall and the season.

Difficulty : Easy Length : 2.2 miles

Where to eat?

Manny penny.

Manny Penny is a diner style restaurant. We actually went there twice, the first time for breakfast and the second time for dinner. Their menus offers a variety of foods from burgers, salads and sandwiches to delicious pizzas and American breakfast classics. Make sure to try their delicious hashbrowns for breakfast.

Address: 201 Manypenny Ave, Bayfield, WI 54814

Wild By Nature Deli

Sometimes it is super hard to find good vegetarian or vegan options, especially when you are traveling outside of a bigger city. Wild by Nature Deli had some yummy vegetarian wrap options.

Address : 100 Rittenhouse Ave, Bayfield, WI 54814

This was by far our favorite restaurant to eat at. The food they offer is really good and more importantly fresh and healthy. They offer freshly baked pastries that are to die for. But their lunch menu is also worth a try. We tried several pieces of their baked goods but we also Falafel sandwich as well as their vegan breakfast – both recommandable.

Address : 146 W Bayfield St, Washburn, WI 54891

Fat Raddish

Fat Raddish offers a variety of great healthy options on their menu and is located in Cornucopia that is about 30 minute drive from Bayfield. It was a great dinner option after our hike and really enjoyed the Artichoke dip as well as the Curry Trout. Both yummy options.

7 Adventures in the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

Thinking about a trip to the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin? With a striking Lake Superior coast made up of sea caves and rocky cliffs, this area on the northern tip of Wisconsin is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

Apostle Islands Wisconsin sea caves

There are endless outdoor activities to engage in, but before we dig into 7 scenic and exciting Apostle Islands adventures, here are some important details about this dramatic destination.

Where are the Apostle Islands located in Wisconsin?

The Apostle Islands sit at the northern-most part of Wisconsin in Lake Superior just off the Bayfield Peninsula. The closest city is Bayfield which is a 6-hour drive from Milwaukee and less than four hours from St. Paul, Minnesota.

How many Apostle Islands are there?

There are 22 Apostle Islands, but only 21 of them make up the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one that is inhabited. It is not, however, part of the National Lakeshore. This is because there are private homes on the island – too many for the government to buy out when the other islands became a National Lakeshore in 1970.

In addition to the 21 islands, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore includes 12 miles of mainland.

How to get to the Apostle Islands?

From Bayfield on the mainland, there are a variety of different ways to access the Apostle Islands. A car ferry transports people and cars over to Madeline Island. Private vessels, tour boats and charters cruise to the other islands as well as kayakers who paddle their way there.

So, what are the best ways to experience this picturesque spot on the map? Start with these 7 thrilling adventures.

Adventures not to miss in the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

kayaking the Apostle Islands

1. Kayak to the mainland sea caves.

You may have heard rave reviews about kayaking to the sea caves. That’s because it’s the best way to explore in and around the sandstone formations lining the Lake Superior shore. If you only do one thing on your trip to the Apostle Islands, it should be this!

The mainland sea caves are accessible from Meyer’s Beach in Cornucopia – about a 25-minute drive from Bayfield. We recommend kayaking with a tour group. (We had a great time with Lost Creek Adventures !) They provide you with the correct type of sea kayak to manage the Lake Superior waters and the expertise to know what to do if a storm suddenly appears in the distance. Plus, their guides know the most insanely beautiful spots to lead you to.

kayaking to sea cave crevice

You’ll want to take pictures along the way, so bring a waterproof case for your camera or phone. (Some kayak tour companies sell these onsite.) You may get a little wet during your tour. There is a waterproof apron they give you that drapes over the opening of the kayak to prevent cold drips from landing on your lap. That was very helpful. If the weather and water temperature call for it, your outfitter may provide a wet suit for you to wear.

We booked a half-day tour which included an hour of instruction, outfitting, and transporting, and 3 hours of actual paddling on the water. Our family of five agreed this was the perfect length of time for a tour.

traversing through sea cave

Kayaking to the sea caves is popular, so book your tour in advance. One thing to keep in mind before booking, however, is to leave time in your itinerary to hike above the sea caves first . The day before you kayak is a good option. Here’s why…

2. Hike above the mainland sea caves.

viewing Apostle Island sea caves from above

The Lakeshore Trail starts at Meyer’s Beach in Cornucopia. (Note: This is also where many kayaking tours begin.) The trailhead is next to the parking lot where there is a $5 fee to park. There are also bathrooms at the start.

The tree-lined trail is a 4.6-mile out and back hike that leads you high above the shore to what’s known as “the Bowl.” This is an area that opens up to an expansive view of the rocky Lakeshore coast and sea caves below. The trail continues miles past this area to a campsite, but many people turn around at the Bowl.

3. Enjoy the area’s local craft beverages.

After a day of hiking, kayaking, or other outdoor adventure, it’s relaxing to sit back and sip one of Bayfield’s locally made beverages. Whether you favor beer, wine, or a cocktail, you’re in luck. Bayfield is home to a brewery, it’s own distillery and multiple wineries. During our stay we took advantage of all three. Here’s a look:

brewery and taproom

  • Adventure Club Brewing is Wisconsin’s northernmost brewery located just south of town on Hwy J in the Howl Adventure Center. From the taproom a large garage door opens to an outdoor patio with shaded seating. They have a disc golf course and are kid and dog friendly too.

sipping slush at distillery

  • Copper Crow Distillery is located minutes north of Bayfield in Red Cliff. They have a tasting room and an outdoor patio. I enjoyed my Copper Crow vodka slush up the hill by the firepit watching people play cornhole. The place has a definite fun and friendly atmosphere.

flight of wine

  • There are multiple wineries in Bayfield. We visited the Wineries on Betzold Road . Driving up to the back of a farmhouse situated among vineyards, we enjoyed tasting a flight of award-winning wines right next to the growing grapes in the peaceful outdoors. The winery offers delicious hard cider, too.

4. Hike to Lost Creek Falls.

lost creek falls

The day we were there the sun was shining through the trees highlighting the bright green leaves and coppery pool of water exuding a magical feel. Be sure to venture behind the waterfall for some extra fun.

posing behind waterfall

5. Cruise around the Apostle Islands.

Taking a cruise around the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin is a popular thing to do in the summer. If you plan to take a cruise, book it in advance because they do sell out. We booked a 2.5 hour Grand Tour evening ride with Apostle Islands Cruises . They depart from the Bayfield pier and allow you to bring snacks and a small cooler of drinks with you.

Apostle Islands cruise boat

6. Cliff jump into Lake Superior in Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island.

One unique adventure to embark on during your visit to the Apostle Islands is cliff jumping into Lake Superior. The water is cold but the experience is worth it (or so I’m told!) My entire family – husband, 17-year-old son, 15-year-old son, and 12-year-old daughter had a blast jumping from the roughly 20 feet high cliff into the turquoise water below. (If you’ve read my other posts, you know I don’t do cliffs. Or cold water. So I took part as full-time videographer.) The brave souls who make the leap are rewarded with an adrenaline-filled experience among the most scenic surroundings.

jumping off cliff into water

Some people say if you’re not going to venture all the way to Big Bay State Park not to bother bringing your car on the ferry. But I say, if you don’t plan to go to Big Bay State Park, then a trip to Madeline Island isn’t necessary at all. There’s not much to do on the island besides exploring the state park.

7. Catch the sunrise and sunset over water.

Wisconsin sunrise at the marina

With many accommodations located right on the water, you may be able to walk right outside your place and see the sunrise. But don’t be so sure. We stayed one block off the water, so our first morning we got up early and walked to the shore to view the sunrise. However, we didn’t realize parts of the shoreline are forested and jut out blocking our view.

sunrise in Apostle Islands Wisconsin

To see a magical sunset, head over to the west side of the peninsula. Meyer’s Beach in Cornucopia is a good option. Prepare to be wowed by fiery orange, yellow and pink hues as the sun goes down over Lake Superior.

An Apostle Islands Wisconsin getaway is filled with adventure set among spectacular Lake Superior scenery. If you’ve been there, do you have something to add to this list? Comment below. We’d love to hear from you.

The closest city, Bayfield, is in Bayfield County, not Ashland County. And some of the Islands are in Bayfield County as well. Not sure how Ashland County was able to make claim of lands off coast of Bayfield County, but Ashland is to the SSE of this Island chain.

Ahoy matees! Enjoy a trip north to the Apostle Islands located on the shores of beautiful but unpredictable Lake Superior. Your cruise of this scenic archipelago of twenty one islands is a site to behold. While cruising you’ll see lighthouses, standing rocks, extensive sea caves and perhaps, some native marine wildlife. Also experience the Vista Fleet Dinner Cruise, historic Rittenhouse Inn for a gourmet luncheon plus a North Shore Scenic Railway excursion.

There’s nothing more relaxing than a cruise on tranquil waters through stunning scenery. Join the group traveling to the very edge of northern Wisconsin and its beautiful treasure, the Apostle Islands Archipelago. With our usual stretch and meal stops we soon have arrived at our overnight accommodations in the town of Ashland. The Hotel Chequamegon will be our host for the next two nights with dinner included this evening at the grill right here at the hotel.

Today is the day to head out on the magnificent waters of Lake Superior as you enjoy the Grand Tour of the Apostle Islands. Marvel at the sites during this three hour narrated cruise throughout this northern archipelago of twenty one islands. While cruising you’ll see lighthouses, standing rocks, extensive sea caves and perhaps, some native marine wildlife. Once back on the mainland experience a delightful gourmet luncheon at the historic Rittenhouse Inn in Bayfield. Once the summer home of Civil War General Allen Fuller, Mary & Jerry Phillips purchased this beautiful 1890s Queen Anne home in 1974 and turned it into a thriving B & B with three lovely dining rooms for hungry tourists. Following our meal, a local guide joins us for a narrated drive of Bayfield. As Wisconsin’s smallest city and the Berry Capital of the state, it’s the gateway to attractions along Lake Superior. You’ll learn it’s logging and maritime history along with a stop at Erickson’s Apple Orchard to sample fruit wines. Enjoy an evening strolling the waterfront with dinner on your own at a local spot.

We have an action packed day in store as we board the motor coach for a road trip along the shores of Lake Superior. It was a November gale in 1905 that wrecked nearly 30 ships which prompted this rugged landmark’s construction. Nestled atop a 130 foot cliff Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most photographed and visited spots in the State of Minnesota, with a drama-filled history and breathtaking Lake Superior views. As we head back towards Two Harbors, MN, we pause for a visit in Gooseberry Falls State Park. Known as the gateway to this northern shore, the park is known for its spectacular waterfalls, river gorge, Civilian Conservation Corps log and stone structures along with north woods wildlife. The North Shore Scenic Railroad, our next adventure, clings to the shores of the lake as it makes its way between Two Harbors and Duluth and has been doing so for almost 100 years. Our final overnight will be in Duluth. There’s time to freshen up before enjoying a two-hour sunset cruise onboard the Vista Fleet Evening Dinner Cruise.

We depart for home making our way back over the border in Wisconsin. Before lunch we make a quick stop at the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewery in Chippeway Falls for a tour and a few samples. We hope you enjoyed the incredible beauty on the this short summer jaunt.

A Quick Guide to Apostle Islands Kayaking

By David De Haan

Last update: November 9, 2022

apostle islands kayaking featured

The 22 islands in Lake Superior that make up the Apostle Islands are a must-visit for kayakers. All of them are part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (with the exception of Madeline).

The Apostle Islands offer unique paddling trails with beautiful lighthouses, the famous sea caves, ancient shipwrecks, secluded pristine beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and more. There’s always something to see and marvel at around you.

There’s no better way to explore this fascinating archipelago than by kayak–sea kayak, to be specific. Kayaks, unlike boats, aren’t loud which means you’ll enjoy some much-anticipated peace and quiet. They are also small and you can get into tight spaces including some of the much smaller sea caves.

With so many islands to explore on one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, you may be wondering where to start. To help you out, here is a guide to Apostle Islands kayaking, detailing the best spots and what you can expect.

The Best Places to Kayak in the Apostle Islands

Check out some of the amazing places you can explore by kayak in the Apostle Islands.

1. Meyers Beach Sea Caves

Most people go to the Apostle Islands for the sea caves, and the mainland sea caves are quite popular.

The caves are easily accessible from Meyers Beach, you simply paddle along the shore until you get to the caves and it makes for a wonderful trip for kayakers of all skill levels. You can extend the trip, paddling farther along the shore, or turn and head back to Meyers Beach.

During winter, the mainland ice caves are phenomenal. They are a unique sight and attract tourists from near and far. The fact that the ice formations are temporal makes them even more appealing.

During the summer months, visitors will also enjoy lovely views of the gorgeous blue lake and huge waves crashing loudly into the caves. Sometimes the conditions are calm and tourists can explore the caves as they enjoy the sound of water softly hitting the rock.

The mainland caves are your best option if you’re looking for a short half-day trip. Many guided mainland sea cave tours launch from Meyers Beach. As you can imagine, crowds are not uncommon here and you may have to exercise patience to see the caves.

2. Sand Island Sea Caves

What else is there to see in the Apostle Islands? More caves!

Sand Island sea caves are perfect for kayakers who want to explore away from the crowds (there aren’t many people compared to the mainland sea caves).

On this island, you’ll have fun paddling in the intricate sea caves which are all somehow interconnected. They make for a fun, unforgettable experience.

People launch from Little Sand Bay and paddle about three miles to Swallow Point where the caves are.

Every island on the Apostle Islands seems to have something that sets it apart. Sand Island is unique in that it’s diverse and you will experience a little bit of everything. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a long day trip.

You can paddle to and through the incredible sea caves, hike through the island, visit the phenomenal lighthouse, have a picnic at the beach, and maybe even camp overnight.

3. Basswood Island

Basswood is another one of the less crowded islands in the Apostles archipelago. It’s perfect if you’re looking to escape into a quiet place for a little while.

You can get to Basswood Island from Buffalo Bay Beach in Red Cliff or Madeline Island if you’re island hopping.

Once you get to the island, don’t be in a hurry. Tie up your kayak and begin your wandering adventure. If you go with a kayak tour guide they’ll show you all the cool spots. The hiking trails are amazing and the unspoiled beaches breathtaking. The island also has a rich history that, hopefully, your guide will tell you all about.

Make sure to paddle to Lone Rock for some stunning views. You can only access it by water but it’s well worth the paddle.

If you go on an overnight trip, spend your evening at the beach. The ambiance and Lake Superior views are like something out of a beautiful dream.

Basswood Island isn’t far from the coastline so it’s great for a day trip.

4. Bayfield Peninsula Shoreline

A good nature paddle doesn’t have to be hectic or just for seasoned kayak paddlers. You can still explore Bayfield and Lake Superior by going on a gentle paddling trip along the peninsula shoreline.

There are a number of guided tours that explore different locations and features along the coastline. You can choose to take a half-day trip or a full-day trip; whatever you decide, you’re guaranteed to have fun.

Some exciting things along the peninsula shoreline include the Bark Bay Slough, the sandstone cliffs, and the Finn McCool shipwreck.

The Bark Bay Slough is protected from the raging waves and winds from the big lake. It’s one of the best places to go for a paddle when the weather makes it impossible to explore the Apostle Islands.

There’s a nice sandbar where the Bark River joins the slough. You can take a break here and enjoy the view of the river as it empties into the largest freshwater lake in the world. You won’t want to leave.

The Bark Bay Slough Natural Area is a perfect spot for birdwatching and fishing too, so you’ll be in for a good time.

5. Superior Falls

This waterfall is shared by the states of Wisconsin and Michigan. The falls drop into the Montreal River, which divides the two states, close to the south shore of Lake Superior.

Kayakers can launch from Saxon Harbor and paddle to the mouth of the Montreal River, then farther up the river to the Superior Falls. The falls are magnificent with multiple drops. You can enjoy viewing the final 40-foot cascade from here.

Once you get there relax, take gorgeous photos, swim, and just let your eyes feast on the beauty of nature.

If you love waterfalls, you’re sure to enjoy this trip. There are other small waterfalls in the area. You can extend your trip to visit them and explore the place. The cliffs and falls are spectacular.

Locals recommend early spring as the best time to visit the falls.

6. Siskiwit Lake

When the water temperatures, wind, and general weather make it impossible to paddle Lake Superior, you can check out Siskiwit Lake.

The 285-acre lake is located a few miles south of Siskiwit Bay. It’s surrounded by gorgeous summer homes and a thick forest so you’ll have fantastic views the entire time.

This trip would be great for kayak anglers. There are panfish, smallmouth bass, brook trout, yellow perch, bluegill, and plenty of walleye among other species. It’s also another perfect spot for birding.

Kayak Camping and Island Hopping in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Exploring this amazing archipelago isn’t something you can do in one day.

So instead of visiting only one of them, some people choose to go camping and island hopping; 18 of the 21 islands in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore have campsites.

If you like, you can even take a one-week trip, visiting different islands. You’ll have all the time you need to swim in glassy waters, hike beautiful trails, paddle through sea caves,  explore shipwrecks, see picturesque lighthouses, and enjoy magnificent views.

There’s nothing quite like camping at the beachfront, watching the sun set over the lake, and finally sleeping under the stars after an eventful day of kayaking.

These multiple-day trips allow you to visit as many caves as possible, get to the most remote islands in the archipelago, and enjoy lovely views all around the islands.

For safety purposes, it’s better to engage the services of authorized local outfitters. They will provide the necessary equipment, guided trips, and safety classes.

You will need a proper sea kayak to paddle the Apostle Islands and all the necessary safety gear, including a PFD . You should also master self-rescue techniques.

You have to make camping reservations in advance. The National Park Service offers detailed information about camping in the Apostle Islands .

Wrapping Up

If you’re into kayaking and want a new place to adventure, the Apostle Islands are definitely worth checking out. You can visit the famous sea caves, see historic lighthouses, enjoy captivating views, fish, and learn about the area’s rich history.

Go island hopping for a week and you’ll still have a lot to see and do in the Apostle Islands. And if paddling Lake Superior is impossible because of the weather, you can go out to Siskiwit Lake and the Bark Bay Slough.

As long as you have the appropriate equipment and skills, you are guaranteed the adventure of a lifetime. You can also talk to local outfitters to get the scoop on all the cool, hidden spots.

Happy adventures!

Sea Kayaking with Kids: Considerations and Tips

Sea kayaking on Lake Superior can be an exciting adventure for people of all ages, including children. However, there are a few important considerations and tips to keep in mind to ensure their safety and make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.

Choosing Appropriate Kayak Sizes

One of the first things to consider when planning a sea kayaking trip with kids on Lake Superior is choosing the appropriate kayak sizes for them. It’s crucial to select kayaks that are suitable for their age and size. Using kayaks that are too big or too small can pose safety risks and make it difficult for children to maneuver properly on Lake Superior.

To determine the right kayak size for your child to use on a lake, consider their age, weight, and height. Many manufacturers provide sizing charts that can help you make an informed decision. Consider consulting with experts or visiting a local kayak rental shop where professionals can guide you in selecting the correct kayak size for your child.

Teaching Basic Paddling Techniques

Before heading out on a sea kayaking adventure on Lake Superior near the Pictured Rocks, it’s essential to teach kids basic paddling techniques. This will not only enhance their enjoyment of the lake but also contribute to their safety on the water.

Start by explaining how to hold the paddle correctly for lake kayaking and demonstrate different strokes such as forward stroke, backward stroke, sweep stroke, and draw stroke. Encourage them to practice these techniques on land before getting into the lake water. A safety course specifically designed for children might also be beneficial in teaching proper paddling techniques while emphasizing water safety skills on the lake.

Scheduling Shorter Trips with Frequent Breaks

When planning a sea kayaking trip with kids, it’s wise to schedule shorter trips with frequent breaks. Children have shorter attention spans compared to adults and may become restless if they spend too much time in the kayak without breaks. This is especially important when exploring the beautiful lake and stunning Pictured Rocks.

Plan your route along the lake accordingly by identifying suitable spots near the pictured rocks where you can take breaks. These breaks will not only allow kids to stretch their legs but also keep them engaged and excited about the kayaking experience. Use these breaks as an opportunity to explore the surroundings, play games, or even have a picnic near the lake.

Ensuring Safety on the Water

Safety should always be a top priority when sea kayaking with children. In addition to choosing appropriate kayak sizes and teaching basic paddling techniques, there are other safety measures to consider.

Firstly, ensure that everyone wears properly fitted life jackets at all times while kayaking at Pictured Rocks. It’s also important to check weather conditions at Pictured Rocks before setting out and avoid kayaking in unfavorable or dangerous situations. Be aware of any potential hazards at Pictured Rocks such as strong currents or rough waters that could pose risks for inexperienced sea kayakers.

Lastly, when kayaking at Pictured Rocks, it’s advisable to kayak in groups or pairs rather than individually, especially when children are involved. This way, if someone falls into the water or needs help, there will always be someone nearby to assist them.

By following these considerations and tips, you can create a safe and enjoyable sea kayaking experience for kids. Remember to prioritize their safety by choosing appropriate kayak sizes, teaching basic paddling techniques, scheduling shorter trips with frequent breaks, and ensuring general safety measures are in place. With proper planning and precautions taken care of beforehand, your sea kayaking adventure with kids is bound to be a memorable one!
